Extra-Curricular Activities

Autumn Term 2023

ALL paid for external clubs start w/c Monday 11 September and Finish w/e Friday 8 December (11 Weeks)

We want to develop in every pupil the skills, talent and abilities required to become emotionally resilient and autonomous learners. We want to encourage in every child a sense of commitment, to value high achievement and to be prepared to adapt and to be innovative.

Our Extra-Curricular Activity programme plays an important part in enabling us to work towards these aims. It does so by extending the curriculum beyond that which is taught in timetabled sessions.

These extra-curricular activities offer pupils opportunities:-

• For learning the value of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of courage, commitment and community.

• To apply academic skills in a real-world context and are thus considered part of a balanced education.

• To make choices in terms of what they want to do, or not do as the case may be, which in itself can be educational.

The purpose of this ECA Booklet is to inform you of the activities on offer at Ditcham Park School. Any questions, please email: parents@ditchampark.com

DANCE

Who is running the club?

Danni Lannoy

Overview of what the club entails

Street Dance:

Street dance is a style of dance that started in America with funk and jazz dance. It encompasses a broad range of styles including popping, locking, breakdance and commercial dance. Our street dance classes encourage students to be creative and find their own voice within new and exciting choreography created by our principal teacher, Danni Lannoy. Students learn the basics of street dance before progressing to more complex movements and routines. We do not offer exams in this style of dance but as they progress groups will have performance opportunities.

Our students absolutely LOVE this class and it's attended by as many boys as it is girls. If your child has ever dreamed of being in a dance group like Diversity or likes to watch the dancers in music videos this is the class for them.

Acrobatic Arts:

Acrobatic Arts is a fusion of classic dance technique and acrobatics and focusses on building strength, flexibility and balance. The children will take exams and as they progress start to learn acrobatic tricks. It is the perfect course for any child that loves dance and gymnastics!

S CONFIRATION OF DETAILS

LAMDA

Who is running the club?

LAMDA is run by Jenny de Jongh, who has worked extensively as an actor, and has taught LAMDA at Ditcham for 20 years.

Overview of what the club entails

LAMDA lessons are held during the school day throughout the year, open to all pupils from Pre-Prep to Form 5 and are carefully timetabled in conjunction with class teachers to ensure no one misses any academic lessons. They are taught in small groups, which change each year (Covid restrictions allowing) to ensure they work with a good mix of actors in their year. The groups work on an exam piece at some stage during the year, this can be a scripted text, devised, poetry or duologues, currently, the Juniors are working on scenes from Toy Story, Fantastic Mr Fox and Alice in Wonderland. I tend to encourage my pupil to do devised theatre at some stage in the Senior School as it hones their improvisational techniques, advances their creativity and can be tremendously enjoyable. Form 5 can work towards the LAMDA medals, which carry UCAS points. The Senior LAMDA exams are held at the end of the Spring Term and pupils from Lowers to Uppers take theirs in the Summer Term; the examination fee is added to your school bill. I have entered in excess of 4000 examination candidates and still hold a 100% pass rate over the years so I feel it is a hugely positive experience for them. Many LAMDA pupils have gone on to train as actors and performers, others have used their public speaking skills, several have found the lessons have helped them overcome stammers and all have gained much needed confidence and self-belief and have forged strong and valuable friendships. Above all the main aim of the lessons is to have fun, gain confidence and explore the magical world of theatre. Parents receive half yearly reports in February and July on their child’s progress.

MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB

Who is running the club?

Mark Philips

Overview of what the club entails

Ditcham Park School has a thriving Mountain Bike Club with over 60 members, aged 5 to 16. The club is managed by staff supported by a large group of volunteer coaches, mountain bike leaders and parent helpers.

After-School MTB Club – (Transition to Form 5). This runs from Easter to October half term on Thursdays until 5.30pm. Riders learn general bike skills (braking, cornering) on the grass and also specific off-road techniques (step-ups and downs, rollers, berms, jumps, navigating roots) on our purpose-built skills trails. Weekend Adventure Rides – These 3-4 hour off-road rides take place monthly during term time year round, in a variety of locations in the South Downs area, some starting from Ditcham, others from Walderton, Kingley Vale and Stansted. These are popular with both students and their parents. We offer a variety of rides suitable for different ages and abilities from 6 flat off-road miles to more than 10 hilly miles. Charge - £5 per ride. Please watch our video.

National Hill Climb – Ditcham hosts the British Schools Cycling Association National Hill Climb every year and many of our riders take part every year. Training for this usually occurs at weekends leading up to the event.
