WINTER IN THE WILD 2023

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17

1. BONFIRE, S’MORES & HOT CHOCOLATE (7 P.M.)

Free! Keep warm with hot chocolate around the bonfire at Elkford’s Meeting Place (gazebo) while snacking on s’mores. Bring your own roasting sticks for marshmallows! Hot chocolate and s’mores courtesy of the District of Elkford.

2. FIREWORKS (AROUND 8:30 P.M.)

Free! A highly anticipated annual show that lights up Elkford’s night sky! Check them out from the ball fields/Devonian Park area. This event is offered by the District of Elkford.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18

3. BONFIRE (ALL DAY)

Free! Take a break from toboggan runs and gather with friends and family to get warm around the fire, which will be burning all day long at Elkford’s Meeting Place (gazebo). You’re welcome to bring your own marshmallows and roasting sticks!

4. TOBOGGANING (ALL DAY)

Free! Kids (and kids at heart) can get ready to rip and bring along their own toboggans, sleds or snow carpets! The toboggan hill and soccer field are located right beside the District Office and Elkford’s Meeting Place (the gazebo), and all are welcome to enjoy! The hill is lit after dark. Please keep pets leashed and pick up after them!

5. FAMILY SNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST (ALL DAY)

Free to enter and spectate! Assemble your team or work alone to create a one-of-a-kind snow sculpture. You will find several piles of snow at Riverview Park (near the green bucket), ready to go whenever you are on Saturday morning! No registration is necessary. Judging for first, second and third place winners will take place on Sunday, February 19 First prize $100, second prize $75 and third prize $50

Important rules and guidelines: sculptures must be at least three feet tall or higher, must have some colour (a spray bottle with food colouring works well), must be made of snow and your name must be on the sculpture somewhere for judging purposes. This event is sponsored and judged by the Elkford Lions Club.

6. PANCAKE BREAKFAST (8 TO 11 A.M.)

Join your local Lions Club for a famously delicious pancake breakfast in Teck Hall! Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 14 years. All proceeds will go towards Elkford Community Projects. This event is sponsored by the Elkford Lions Club.

SNO-PITCH TOURNAMENT KICKOFF (9: 45 A.M.)

Free to watch! Pack your hand warmers and hot chocolate and come on down to the Blaine Borys ball field to cheer on the teams of this year’s sno-pitch tournament! This event is sponsored by the Elkford Minor Ball Association.

8. SWIMS AT THE AQUATIC CENTRE

(VARIOUS TIMES)

Family Swim: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Regular admission rates apply

Public Swim: 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Regular admission rates apply

ART SALE AND AUCTION (11 A.M. TO 3 P.M.)

Want to buy some beautiful art from local artists and support a good cause? Check out this fundraiser, organized by a local student, Levi Vogt, as his capstone project. All proceeds will be donated to the Elkford Arts Council’s youth programs.

10. “UGLY MUG” FUNDRAISER (NOON TO 4 P.M.)

Visit the patio outside Teck Hall—access from the outside only—to purchase your favourite ugly mug by minimum donation and fill it with hot chocolate! The patio is located adjacent to the toboggan hill and fire pit, so stay a while and enjoy the toasty fire and take a few rips down the toboggan hill. This fundraiser is offered by the Elkford Arts Council.

11. SKATING AT THE REC CENTRE (1 TO 3 P.M.)

Public Skating (free!) from 1 to 3 p.m. A prize for anyone who shows up in a “Superhero” costume! This event is offered by the District of Elkford.

12. EARLY YEARS’ DANCE FOR KIDS (1 TO 3 P.M.)

Free! Do your littles love to dance? Check out this fun, free dance open to all children ages six and under in Teck Hall. No registration is necessary! This event is sponsored by Elkford Early Years Committee.

13. INTRO TO ARCHERY (1 TO 4 P.M.)

Free! All ages and skill levels are welcome! Visit us at the archery facility (north end of the Elkford Mall, located beside the Blend Bistro) to test your archery skills! This event is sponsored by the Elkford Rod and Gun Club.

14. SNOWSHOE RACE FOR KIDS AT THE SOCCER FIELD

(1:30 P.M.)

Free! Get ready, get set...GO! Snowshoe race for kids between the ages of five and 12 years old. Prizes for first, second and third place will be awarded and they must bring their own snowshoes. Register kids before end of day on February 13 at the Community Conference Centre (750 Fording Drive) or by calling 250.865.4010. This event is offered by the District of Elkford.

15. FAMILY SNOWSHOEING

(2 P.M.)

Free! Meet at the Boivin Creek Crossing (wooden pedestrian bridge) and bring your own snowshoes, poles, water bottles and dress in layers. All ages are welcome, but parents/guardians are encouraged to accompany children. This event is approximately 2.5 hours and is sponsored by the Elkford Trails Alliance.

16. DOWNHILL COUCH RACES AT THE TOBOGGAN HILL/SOCCER FIELD (3 P.M.)

Free! Build your own armchair or couch racer on skiis and enter it into the race at the toboggan hill! Register at the Community Conference Centre (750 Fording Drive) or at 250.865.4010. Registrations accepted up until 30 minutes before the event. This event is offered by the District of Elkford.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19

17. SNOWMOBILE POKER RUN & FAMILY DAY FUN RIDE (9 A.M. REGISTRATION START)

Join the Elkford Snowmobile Association for their annual Poker Run + Family Day Fun Ride! Enjoy hot lunches, win cash prizes and door prizes. Fun for the whole family! Registration at Fas Gas for Trail 7 riders: 9 to 11 a.m. Registration at Round Prairie for Koko Claims riders: 9 to 11 a.m. This event is sponsored and organized by the Elkford Snowmobile Association.

18. SWIMS AT THE AQUATIC CENTRE (VARIOUS TIMES)

Parent & Tot Swim: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Regular admission rates apply
