The 2025 Federal Election has brought significant change for the Liberal Party nationally.
While the result is disappointing, I remain deeply honoured and thankful to the people of Hume for re-electing me as your local representative. Serving our region is an enormous privilege, and I will continue to work hard every day to advocate for my electorate.
It’s been a challenging week for Liberals across the country – particularly for my friend and colleague Peter Dutton, who has dedicated over 20 years to our party and our country. His strength and leadership have been unwavering, and I thank him for his service.
I also want to thank the incredible volunteers and supporters who stood with me throughout the campaign. Your commitment, energy and belief in our shared values mean the world to me, and I am genuinely humbled by your support.
To my colleagues and friends who won’t return to Parliament – thank you for your service. Many of you leave with proud legacies and still have so much more to contribute. You will be missed in our team, and I wish you all the best for what’s ahead.
Australia remains a nation of extraordinary potential, and I’ll continue to stand up for those whose voices aren’t always heard in Canberra – the families, small business owners, workers and local communities who believe in Liberal values.

Gregory Hills author and internationally bestselling novelist Michelle Montebello is set to launch her highly anticipated new book, Woodstock, on June 18, 2025—a sweeping tale set against one of the most iconic events in modern history.
“I’ve always been fascinated with the sixties,” Michelle shares. “It was an era of profound social, political and technological change—man’s first walk on the moon, the Vietnam War, the counterculture movement, incredible fashion and music and, of course, Woodstock!”
Known for blending emotion, history, and romance, Montebello’s latest novel dives deeper into historical accuracy than ever before. “The amount of research required for Woodstock was more extensive than I’ve conducted for other novels,” she says. “This was a recent event in modern history, so I had to be conscious of fact and refrain from using too much creative licence, because a lot of my readers will remember this era well.”
Michelle immersed herself in documentaries to bring the vibrant setting to life. “Woodstock was a feast of colour and noise,” she explains. “One fun fact I wasn’t aware of was that due to the mass food shortages, the U.S. Army dropped tinned goods, sandwiches, water—and even daisies—over the crowd. I thought that was cool!”
The novel follows dual timelines—one set in 1969, the other in 2010—and is rich in personal and cultural reflection. “There’s a moment in chapter forty-five where my 1969 protagonist makes a heart-wrenching decision,” Michelle reveals. “It’s a very moving scene and I think many young girls of that era had to make similar decisions.”
Crafting characters who feel authentic to the time is a signature strength for Montebello. “I develop characters according to the era—their names, hairstyles, occupations, even how they speak and think. But they always surprise me. I loved Randall the best. He was such a hippy!”
And if Woodstock ever hits the screen? Michelle has casting ideas: “Halston Sage would be perfect as Dawn in 1969. Blake Lively for Sydney in 2010. And the soundtrack? It would definitely be The Doors’ Break on Through (To the Other Side).”
Woodstock releases June 18 in paperback, hardcover, and eBook formats.

I’m incredibly excited to announce that Gledswood Hills High School is open!
After 12 years of delays and broken promises by the former Liberal government, the new temporary high school has been delivered.
Since I was elected in 2023, my priority has always been to fight for and deliver the infrastructure and essential services that our Camden community has been deprived of for so long.
Gledswood Hills High School will be operating out of Gregory Hills Primary School until 2027, when the permanent site for the high school is expected to open.
During their 12 years in office, the Liberal National Government neglected South-Western Sydney, refusing to deliver the necessary healthcare services our area desperately needed.
Land has also been chosen for the permanent site for Gledswood Hills High School.
In 2024, members of the community came forward, alerting me to this issue and asking for my assistance. I launched a petition in response, and thanks to the people of Camden who signed it, we were able to secure funding to build a new ambulance station under the Minns Labor Government’s Ambulance Infrastructure Program.
As a former teacher, I know how important it is to have access to a great education at a local school, and I’m working hard to ensure that every child in our area is able to receive the best schooling experience they can.
Through this program, we have already purchased land in Porter Street, Oran Park, and have put out construction tenders – getting on with the job of delivering healthcare to the area.
The Minns Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering much needed upgrades to 15 schools across Camden.
While this service sits just outside my electorate, it will service the people in our community, ensuring families in Gledswood Hills, Gregory Hills, Cobbitty and Harrington Park have access to timely healthcare when they need it.
These upgrades are part of the Minns Labor Government’s work to rebuild public education in NSW after 12 years of Liberal Government neglect.
Wait times can also be expected to be reduced, as our singular Camden ambulance service and neighbouring Campbelltown ambulance services will not be stretched across our entire community.
Teacher vacancies have been slashed by over 40 percent in NSW public schools.
This upgrade is great news. I’m incredibly proud to be part of a government that is bringing Camden’s healthcare opportunities back into the forefront of planning. I look forward to seeing this service delivered, and to continuing to work hard to meet the needs of our community.
When the Minns Labor Government says that we want to ensure every student has access to a world class education, we mean it – and that’s proven right here in Camden.
As always, if you have any issues – local or government – please don’t hesitate to contact my office on 4655 3333 or at camden@parliament.nsw.gov.au. I’d love to hear from you, no matter how big or small the matter.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) recently rolled up the doors for its annual Open Day last month, with firefighters urging the community to ensure they have a working smoke alarm in the lead up to Winter.
Fire stations across the state, including Oran Park Fire Station, opened from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday 10 May with a range of free activities including live demonstrations, station tours and free giveaways.
Families were able to get up close to the fire trucks and rescue equipment, and chat to local firefighters about the simple steps they can take to ‘BE FIRE SAFE’ this Winter.
PAW Patrol™ fan favourites, Marshall and Chase, made an appearance at the Museum of Fire at Penrith, ensuring ‘impaw-tant’ fire safety messages reached some of our youngest community members.
“Open Day was a wonderful opportunity to get behind-thescenes access to NSW fire stations and understand the work our firefighters do to keep our communities safe” said Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib.
Authorised by Sally Quinnell MP, Shops G20/21 Narellan Town Centre, 326 Camden Valley Way, Narellan NSW 2567. Funded using parliamentary entitlements, January 2025.
“Open Day is something our firefighters look forward to each year. It gives us the chance to meet locals and provide vital safety tips to be fire safe.
“This year, we want to make sure that everyone has a working smoke alarm in their home.
“We can’t smell smoke while we’re sleeping, so having a working smoke alarm is so crucial.
“Fire and Rescue NSW offers free home fire safety visits. Local firefighters will visit your home, provide tailored fire safety advice, test your smoke alarm, and will even replace it for free if necessary" said FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM. 9th June

Oran Park’s Brett Laws from Pryde Meats Narellan has returned home a hero, after competing at the World Butchers Challenge — a global showdown dubbed “The Greatest Butchery Event on Earth” and known as the Olympics of butchery.
Held every three years, this year’s competition took place in Paris, France, inside the Olympic wrestling hall, with elite butchers from around the world competing for the prestigious Golden Knife Trophy.
“This is the biggest stage in our industry,” Brett said. “To represent my country against the best butchers on this planet is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It’s a true honour.”
The two-day event featured young and apprentice butchers on Sunday, March 30, followed by the main team event on Monday, March 31. Brett competed as part of Team Australia, which included six of the country’s top butchers from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.
Each team had just 3.5 hours to transform an entire body of beef, one whole lamb, one side of pork, and six chickens into more than 100 value-added items.
“My role was value-adding — I create the finished meat products,” Brett explained. “It’s intense, creative, and all about presentation, quality, and consistency.”
Team Australia faced fierce competition from 14 other countries, including Germany, France, USA, New Zealand,
Ireland, and Italy. When the dust settled, France took the trophy, Germany placed second, and Australia earned a proud thirdplace finish.
But the accolades didn’t stop there.
Brett was named to the prestigious World Butchers Challenge All Star Team, recognised as one of the top six performers across the entire competition.
“I’m super proud and honoured to be selected,” he said. “To be recognised for the best value-added work in the competition — it means everything.”
Brett extended heartfelt thanks to Pryde Meats, his sponsors, and the local community for their support.
“The amount of people who came into the shop to wish me luck — it meant the world. I couldn’t have done it without you guys.”

Author Laurie Gilmore
On a recent trip overseas, I picked up this sweetly illustrated book and although we should never judge a book by its cover we do eat with our eyes, and I devoured this book during our short time away. It was the perfect cozy autumnal read! For readers that enjoyed the show Gilmore Girls it has the same feeling with some romance, mystery and hayrides!
The Pumpkin Spice Café by Laurie Gilmore is a romantic, easy read about Jeanie a city girl who has moved to Dream Harbour to take over her aunt’s café and Logan a grumpy, local farmer with a painful past who refuses to fall for her charm.
The story is easy to read with lots of moments to give you butterflies in your stomach. Whether that’s the sweet gestures from Logan, the inviting small-town energy or the love story between two opposites. I found the storyline good with the few twists and turns keeping your interest trying to solve the mystery. The book also finished the way you’d hope with a happy ending.
The book didn’t have too many twists or turns to the main storyline, and some may find this element disengaging, but for a light-hearted read it doesn’t take readers down a winding trail. The book also gets quite steamy in places which might be too racy for younger readers.
In review I would give the book a 3/5. A read for adults who enjoy the romance genre and enjoy a quick, light and uplifting read.
The Dream Harbour series also includes The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore, The Strawberry Patch Pancake House and The Ginger Bread Bakery (Book 4) is set to be released in September.

Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the fourth most common and second most deadly cancer in Australia. Sadly, over 15,000 Australians are diagnosed with this disease each year. 1 in 20 Australians will be diagnosed by bowel cancer by age 85. But the good news is, we can make a real difference through early detection.
Most cases of bowel cancer begin as small, non-cancerous growths called polyps. Detecting and removing these polyps early is a key part of preventing the cancer from developing. Smoking, eating a large amount of red or processed meats, drinking alcohol, and being overweight can contribute to the development of bowel cancer. Genetic factors increase the risk of bowel cancer, but most people diagnosed do not have a family history. Regular physical activity and fibre rich diet can reduce the risk of bowel cancer.
For a long time, bowel cancer was primarily diagnosed in Australians over 50, but that’s changing. Over the last 25 years, the incidence of colorectal cancer has almost tripled in those aged 30-39 despite reducing rates in those over 50. In response to this, the Australian Government has reduced the starting age of national bowel cancer screening from 50 to 45 years old. All Australians over 50 years are mailed out a free bowel cancer screening kit, and those 45 years and older can opt-in (National Bowel Cancer Screening Program).
Bowel cancer screening works by detecting microscopic amounts of blood in the faeces. This is not detectable by the human eye. Colon polyps can develop over years or decades before becoming bowel cancer. A colonoscopy is the gold standard, and can detect pre-malignant polyps and remove them, preventing the development of bowel cancer.
If you have had a positive screening test, you should undergo a colonoscopy to detect, diagnose, and treat colon polyps to prevent bowel cancer.

Roller skating has been on an upward surge. After a decline in popularity since the 70’s and 80’s and the spotlight taken by Torvill and Dean and ice skating, Oran Park’s Silvana Vashisht is helping to lead the charge in bringing artistic roller skating back to the fore.
During the recent Autumn competition, which was held at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium on 29th and 30th March 2025, Silvana competed in three events – Figures Rising Star Level 2, Freeskating Rising Star Level 2, and Solo Dance Rising Star Level 1.
Through her hardwork and dedication, Silvana came second in both the Figures Rising Star Level 2, and Freeskating Rising Star Level 2. Having recently started in Solo Dance; this was her first time competing in that category.
“Silvana was thrilled to participate, especially after training for 12 months since her last Level 1 Rising Star competition. She now feels much more confident in her footwork and toe loop jumps” explained Ritika Vashisht, Silvana’s Mother.
The talented artistic roller skater has wasted no time in already preparing for her next challenge, progressing to the next level – Rising Star Level 3.
“Once she’s ready in a few months, she plans to compete in both Freeskating and Figures at that level,” said Ritika.
Such is her dedication to the sport, with the help and guidance of her parents, Silvana makes the trek from Oran Park to Emu Plains weekly to train.
“Silvana trains every Saturday at Penrith Skatel Club with Australia’s top coach, Esther Ambrus Davis. Although we wish she had more training hours, opportunities are limited due to the lack of figure skating facilities/ coaches in South West Sydney” stated Ritika to the Oran Park Gazette.
“Her coach describes her as a fast learner, highly focused, and someone who soaks up feedback like a sponge. Silvana truly looks forward to her sessions at the club each week” she concluded.

Do you feel as though you have very little drive for something you once found easy and were excited to do? Suffering with low motivation? I hear so many people saying that they are really struggling to get motivated and that they feel ‘meh’ about completing tasks in their life. Unfortunately, we often have an unrealistic expectation of ourselves and our motivation level. This is often perpetuated by viewing countless posts of people stating how they are reaching their goals, completing task after task, and showing themselves whizzing through their day like James Bond with no sign of a sigh.
In reality, no one has continuous high motivation as motivation ebbs and flows. One day we feel driven to complete a task and the next day we may feel unmotivated to the most basic of tasks. Often, we respond to low motivation by making ourselves tighter schedules, setting more tasks and engaging in critical selftalk, making the issue worse. It is important to be realistic and understand that our motivation will rise and fall, and to be kinder to ourselves when this occurs. Focusing on the goal, rather than the process and journey toward the goal, can reduce our motivation.
Ryan and Deci, two prominent leaders in self-determination theory state that there are three core needs at the heart of motivation: autonomy (I choose this), competence (I can do this) and relatedness (this matters to me and others). Cultivating these needs can assist with motivation.

Behaviour Changer - Tips to help reduce procrastination.
• Identify feelings of low motivation and engage in kind selftalk, i.e.” I am noticing I am feeling this, and it is ok that this feeling is here.”
• Imagine how you will feel once you complete the task.
• When feeling overwhelmed by the task, break it down to the smallest action to start. e.g. if completing an assignment, the first action may be to commit to writing one sentence.
• Start with the easiest task or component of the task first.
• Think about a reward you will give yourself for completing the task.
• Identify that you do not have to do anything - sure there might be consequences, but no one is controlling you and you can choose whether you engage in the task or not.
• Think about times you have completed similar tasks and the outcome.
• Connect with why completing the task is important to you (e.g. A neat home adds to my feelings of enjoyment when I am at home).

We made it through another Federal Election, and as the Government gets their Ministers and seats in order, we are once again able to look to the future of our wonderful country with hope. In the words of Penny Wong, we are a “nation of courage and kindness”, something we can all aspire to be regardless of our political persuasion or ideology.
As we wave goodbye to Autumn, and the gardeners among us hope for cold and wet weather for the next few months, we find ourselves almost in the middle of 2025, and suddenly it’s time to get out our piles of receipts and invoices to get ready for tax time.
But if that thought doesn’t thrill you, check out all the local events in your area here in the paper – there’s always heaps going on, so find a jumper and get out and get involved!
As always, thank you to our advertisers, who make it possible for us to deliver your copy of the District Gazette directly to your mailbox, and we hope that you consider their businesses if you are looking for goods and services.
