The upgrade of Camden Valley Way has opened to traffic a year ahead of schedule and $28 million under budget – bringing faster travel times and less congestion to motorists in Sydney’s growing south west.

NSW Premier Mike Baird, Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and Member for Camden Chris Patterson officially opened the final 3.2 kilometre stage of the project between Bringelly Road and Ingleburn Road, late in 2015.

“When we commit to building vital infrastructure we deliver – I’m delighted that in 2015 we have opened the South West Rail Link and now Camden Valley Way ahead of schedule for residents in south western Sydney,” Mr Baird said.

“Camden Valley Way is one of Sydney’s key arterial roads – our fast-tracked upgrade will cut travel times as well as support new housing and jobs.”

Mr Gay said residents would now benefit from more than 10 kilometres of new four lane divided road between Oran Park Drive at Harrington Park and Bringelly Road at Leppington.

“With the capacity to increase to six lanes in the future, this road corridor upgrade provides an important link to the Hume Motorway, M7 and M5 interchanges,” Mr Gay said. continued pg. 12

I began by saying that nothing changes on New Year’s day. Not very inspiring is it? So what didn’t change? God didn’t change for a start. His word in the Bible and the promises He’s made there didn’t change as the clocked ticked to midnight. God’s love for you didn’t change. In fact, although we might have been a little bit more tired on January 1st, if we’re truly honest, we didn’t change either..

So where’s the good news in all of this? Well the same God who didn’t change has come to free people like me and you who can’t keep our new year’s resolutions to eat less, exercise more, and earn a place on Santa’s lap by being good for a whole year.

He tells us that true and lasting change - a fresh start - is possible if we’ll turn to Him and ask for forgiveness and His loving rule over our lives. In the Bible it’s said like this, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Why not resolve to explore that new life with us this year?

While I’m writing I’d like to thank you for joining us at our Oran Park Community Carols. What a great evening it turned out to be. With balloons fluttering in the breeze, blankets spread on the grass, and a wonderfully well timed drop in the temperature we were delighted to see a crowd of over 2000 people enjoying the free kid’s craft, jumping castles, kiddy farm, and climbing

wall. Up front we were blessed to have our great band pumping out the Carols by Candlelight before a typically big, bright and noisy fireworks finale. I’m really pleased to say that together we raised over $800 to contribute to the Cobbitty RFS as well. Book this year’s in for Saturday December 17th - it should be a great finale to the year we’re just beginning!

Since that announcement one of my short term goals, as the founding Parish priest, was to work with others to find a venue not only for a Parish office but where we could gather for our weekend church services (masses) and other midweek Parish events.

We were fortunate that the school community of St Justin's Primary School made their library and other school facilities and grounds available. But while this was a 'short term goal', from day 1 of the life of the new Parish a longer term goal was set; namely to plan for a more permanent structure for the growing Catholic community.

I am pleased to say that, after countless hours of meetings and conversations and working our way through the approvals process, it is envisaged that in the next few months a new Catholic Parish centre and worship space will open on the same site where St Justin's Primary School and St Benedict's College are currently located. This building is best described as a purpose built (prefab) structure and will operate as our church and Parish centre until a permanent structure is required as the community grows. Between now and the day when our new building opens

our weekend church services (masses) will continue to be held in the library at St Justin's Primary School (94 Oran Park Drive) on Saturday afternoons at 5pm and on Sunday mornings at 10am.

I look forward to opening the doors of our new church and Parish centre in these months ahead.

A little bit of the country will come to town on the 20th and 21st of February with the Annual Luddenham Show being held for the 112th time at the Luddenham Showground. This year, the main arena will play host to not one but two jet cars.

Joining the Daihatsu will be the never before seen jet powered van, making its debut. Brave country men will compete in the bull riding. Steer rides, poddy calf rides and cow tagging will also take place in the rough riding program.

In other entertainment, there will be the dog high jump, where you can bring along your own dog to compete or watch the sheep dog trials. With a program that is bursting at the seams, you’ll find stage entertainment including singers, reptile displays, sheep shearing, dancers and novelty acts.

Also open for the public to enter are events that include whip cracking, ice cream eating contests and a bush poet’s breakfast hosted by Australian champion Carol Heuchan. ‘Luddenham’s Got Talent’ talent quest will offer $600 in prize money for local acts, whilst country rock band ‘The Strangers’ will also feature. Mower Mania will pit the best of the best grass cutters in their speed machines against each other.

Art, photography, cooking and farm produce displays will grace the historic pavilion. Animals of all shapes and sizes will come together to be judged. There will even be an animal nursery that the kids will love. Market stalls will also be a great attraction, not to mention, the fireworks display which will be provided by none other than, Fotis International.

Slipped Discs – Not Always a Life Sentence!

Disc problems are very common. Up to 81% of people will have disc bulging, 33% disc herniation (slipped disc) with no back-pain symptoms (Stadnik 1998). Lumbar-disc herniation is most common in people aged 30–50 years, men twice as likely as women. Many people (1-3%) suffer from disc related pain (Jordon 2009), often for years.

Discs are fibrocartilaginous joints between vertebrae. They take the weight on the spinal column, cushion vertebra during compression and act like a ligament holding vertebrae together.

A spinal disc is a little like an old style donut. It has a fibrous tough outer layer (annulus fibrosis) that holds in an the “cushioning� softer gel-like inner core (nucleus pulposus).

Three main disc issues exist. All can cause pain due to inflammation & nerve impingement.

1. Disc protrusion: disc remains structurally sound but bulges out at the sides.

2. Disc extrusion: the tough outer layer of the disc tears & part of the softer inner core protrudes through.

3. Disc sequestration: under extreme compression, all of the softer inner core material is squeezed out of the disc into the surrounding tissue.

Chronic disc compression due to excess body weight and tight core muscles, or both, can lead to weakening & damage to discs. Extreme acute pressure during a lift can also damage discs. Definitely avoid strengthening the core or lifting if you have disc associated pain.

The strength of the connective tissue that makes up the disc is vital. Age and nutrition are the key. Older people generally have weaker connective tissues, but nutrition & eating right is crucial. Bone broth, greens, nutrient dense unprocessed and fermented foods provide nutrients to keep your weight optimal and your bones & discs strong at any age. Weight bearing exercise provides hormonal signals to build strong discs if diet is adequate.

Obviously prevention is far better than cure but if you do have disc related back pain which hasn’t resolved, why not come talk to us at BHW. Camden LAC Police Issue Safety Tips Camden Police are issuing tips to help the community members stay safe and reduce the likelihood of them becoming victims of opportunistic crime.

“Being careful about supplying personal information, as well as alert to your surroundings can help prevent becoming a victim of crime,” said Senior Constable Greg Louden Crime Prevention Officer, Camden LAC. A few simple precautions can help protect you and your property,” he said.

Camden Police offers this advice to members of the Community: Safety at home • If you are harassed, attacked or robbed, tell the police immediately.

• Lock all doors when you are at home.

• Leave spare keys with a trusted friend rather than hiding them.

• Keep a photographic record of your jewellery and engrave valuable personal items with your name, address and license number.

• If you are going away ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home and collect your mail.

• Don’t keep large amounts of money in the home.

• Make sure your house number is clearly visible to ensure police can locate your home quickly if you need assistance.

• If you live alone, don’t publicise this.

• Do not publicise whether you are Ms, Miss, Mrs or Mr. • Arrange to have regular contact with someone you trust.

Visitors • If you are not sure who it is, don’t open the door.

• Remember if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

• Be suspicious of people wanting to enter your home. Ask for identification, look at it carefully and contact their office for verification.

• If someone wants to use your phone for an emergency, offer to make the call for them, but don’t let them in.

Man Charged With Multiple Firearms Offences – Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad Detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad have charged a man with multiple firearms offences following a search warrant at Oran Park.

Strike Force Rinis was formed by MEOCS officers in 2014 to investigate the alleged supply of methylamphetamine and cannabis, as well as money laundering activities.

As part of their inquires, strike force detectives executed a search warrant at a home on Murphy Street at Oran Park last December.

At the home police located and seized four firearms and firearms parts, along with a large amount of ammunition.

Detectives also seized an electronic control device, illegal fireworks, a knuckle duster and other items.

A 38-year-old man was arrested and taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with 15 firearms-related offences.

He was refused bail and appeared at Campbelltown Local Court in mid-December last year.

Inquiries by Strike Force Rinis continue.

Work Begins on New Outdoor Youth Space in Mount Annan

Work on an exciting new multi-purpose outdoor youth space in Birriwa Reserve, Mount Annan commenced last month.

The need for outdoor youth spaces with adventure playgrounds was identified as a high priority in the 2014 Camden Recreation Demand Study. Council chose Birriwa Reserve in 2014 as a location for a new youth space.

The new space will have four main sections and offer a great range of adventure style equipment catering mainly for 12-17 year olds, passive recreation spaces and attractive landscaping.

Funding to Support Vulnerable Families in Camden Local services for children, young people, families and communities in Camden will continue to support families and communities to overcome complex challenges, Member for Camden Chris Patterson recently announced.

Six support services in Camden will receive an extension of $798,139 in funding until mid-2017 for targeted earlier intervention and intensive programs.

This funding is part of the NSW Government’s $233 million commitment to intervening early to address issues in families which put children at risk of harm and likelihood of entering the child protection system.

“These services are our best chance of helping families early on so they don’t end up reaching crisis point,” Mr Patterson said.

“Extending funding to mid-2017 will provide certainty for our community partners that provide important services like case management, parenting programs and domestic violence support.

Between now and 2017 the NSW Government through the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) will work closely with service providers in Camden to co-design an improved targeted earlier intervention service system in NSW. “It is important that the reach and impact of earlier intervention programs is maximised so families and communities have better outcomes,” Mr Patterson said.

Preheat oven to 180C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

Scatter walnuts over the tray and drizzle with honey. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until walnuts caramelize. Remove from oven and set aside to cool.

Combine the pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, mustard and 2 tbs oil in a screw-top jar and shake until well combined. Season with salt and pepper.

Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add the haloumi; cook, turning, for 2 minutes or until golden brown and heated through. Remove from heat.

Combine rocket and spinach in a large bowl. Drizzle with dressing and gently toss to combine. Arrange on serving plates.

Top with haloumi and walnuts and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately.

What’s happening in financial markets?

• Chinese growth concerns – Chinese economic data has been lack lustre but not to the extent that should prompt the market declines seen since the start of the year.

Furthermore, action by Chinese officials to lower the yuan together with the temporary closure of the Chinese stock market followed by the removal of the “circuit breaker” controls led investors to again question China’s growth trajectory and, more importantly, the ability of the Chinese government to manage these issues.

• US monetary tightening – The US Federal Reserve increased official interest rates to 0.25% late last year. This has concerned some investors but they have seemingly overlooked the fact that recent US employment data shows the US economy is not on the verge of collapse and that interest rates remain extremely low.

• Geopolitical affairs – The North Korean hydrogen bomb test on 6 January and increased Saudi/Iran tensions have led to heightened risk aversion.

What should you do?

The events since the start of the year have highlighted the inter connectedness of economies and financial markets, and the prospect that share market concerns in one region can be transmitted to other markets. At times like this it’s important to stay calm. Remember some of the fundamental principles of investing, such as making sure you have a diversified portfolio and investing for the long term.
