With February now upon us, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the perfect time to share a love story.
Locals who have celebrated over 5 decades of love and marriage, Mulgoa’s Wally and Margaret Cox have done just that, 51 years to be exact!
Wally and Margaret were married in Parramatta on 30th July in 1971. Their story would begin before this. Three years prior, back in 1968, they met at a dance in Luddenham at the Progress Hall. Dancing together on the dance floor, their worlds collided.
The Cox family would later settle in Mulgoa in 1972. Life was much simpler and Mulgoa Village was much smaller. Wally and Margaret now have 2 children and 8 grandchildren.
Family means everything to them. “Family are people we love. They complete our lives” said Wally and Margaret in agreeance.
Time with family is important. They enjoy going out to lunch locally. Welcome Chinese Restaurant and Warragamba Workers Club are two places they love to visit with family and friends.
Spending over 50 years with one another would bring some memorable moments. Some of the best moments are sharing a laugh together.
“We both have a similar sense of humour. Going through life, we make each other laugh” smiled Wally and Margaret.
They can both sum up the secret to a long and happy marriage in three words, “Love, patience, and understanding”. Valentine’s Day is Tuesday 14th February.

Nominations Open For Awards Recognising Outstanding Local Women In Sport
Local champions and young achievers in sport will be recognised as part of the NSW Government’s Her Sport Her Way Awards, with nominations now open.
Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the Her Sport Her Way Awards celebrate and honour the achievements of women and organisations that are breaking down barriers for women’s sport in NSW.
“The Her Sport Her Way Awards recognise the achievements of women and organisations in driving powerful change and leaving a legacy for the way women’s sport is played in NSW,” Mrs Davies said.
“Women make such an incredible contribution to sporting clubs and organisations across our community and if you know a local who is going above and beyond for the sport they love, nominate them for these awards.”
The Her Sport Her Way Awards feature five categories
Young Achiever, Local Champion, Outstanding Organisation, Trailblazer and Overall Champion.
Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the awards are part of the NSW Government’s women in sport strategy, Her Sport Her Way.
“This program is all about increasing female participation in sport, whether that’s on the field or in administration, coaching and volunteer roles,” Mr Henskens said.
“Since the inception of this program four years ago, the number of women and girls playing sport has sky-rocketed, and by investing in grassroots programs and initiatives across NSW, we will continue to secure a brighter future for women in sport.”
Applications for the awards close on 28 February. For more information on the Her Sport Her Way program, visit www.sport. nsw.gov.au/hersportherway.
$1.7 Million Rebuild For Western Sydney Fire Station
Sydney’s newest fire station has opened its doors, with the completion of the $1.7 million development of Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade celebrated at a ceremony last month.
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke said the new building is located on the same site as the previous fire station, which the Brigade’s 41 members had outgrown.
“This new building boasts three trucks bays, a large training room, office, kitchen, change rooms and male and female amenities,” Ms Cooke said.
“These facilities will be utilised by a number of Brigades in the local area, helping to strengthen our emergency services right across the western suburbs of Sydney.”
Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is continuing to invest in new facilities and equipment for volunteers.
“There is nothing more important than providing our volunteer emergency service workers with the facilities and equipment they need to carry out their roles safely and effectively,” Mrs Davies said.
“We’ve had our fair share of storms, floods and bush fires here in Western Sydney and I am very grateful to the people who protect our community each and every day.”
At last months ceremony, six volunteers received Long Service Medals in recognition of a combined 128 years of service. 14 volunteers were also presented with National Emergency Medals and a Commissioner’s Unit Citation for their work during the 2019-20 fire season.
Rural Fire Service Commissioner Rob Rogers said local volunteers were heavily involved in firefighting operations across NSW during Black Summer.
“Members from the Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade provided critical support to the community, including at the Green Wattle fire which sadly saw the death of firefighters Andrew O’Keefe and Geoffrey Keaton,” Commissioner Rogers said.
“These Brigade members rendered assistance to the injured volunteers after their truck was struck by a falling tree, and they are worthy recipients of a Commissioner’s Unit Citation for their efforts.”

The people and local community have welcomed back Darrel Higgins, Nikkole Dixon and team, with the opening of their new real estate office.
Higgins + Co opened a new office in Luddenham at the historic cottage on Willmington Road, next door to David’s Stall, in late December.
The team will have an official opening in late February. The exciting event will include guest speakers, great food prepared by local chefs and giveaways.
“Thank you to all the people that have called into the cottage to welcome us back to the community or as some locals have recently commented “Welcome Home”.
“The Cottage is something we have dreamed of doing and would not be possible without the support of our community and our incredible team” said Nikkole Dixon of Higgins + Co.
The Luddenham office covers all local surrounding areas from Austral to Werombi and as far as Hawkesbury.
They are very much looking forward to having the new office in Luddenham.
“We can’t wait to reconnect with old clients/friends as well as meeting new ones. It’s great to return to the community we know and love” she said.
“From all of us here at Higgins + Co, we cannot be more excited to see what 2023 has in store” concluded Nikkole.

Shedders Start Year on a High
Warradale Men’s Shed are looking to have a big year ahead in the local community, with the news that they now have a new website.
The website, www.waradalemensshed.org.au, is full of helpful information about the Men’s Shed. This includes a profile, membership, news/events, items for sale, opening hours and contact details.
An exciting feature is a short film that can be viewed about the Wollondilly Community Men’s Sheds.
“The film was made through a grant from Wollondilly Shire Council. A number of Shedders of the area were interviewed and the film looks at the characteristics of each of the Sheds. Our Shed is represented in the film” said Michael Davis, President of Warradale Men’s Shed.
“I understand that the film has been nominated for an award in the Wollondilly Australia Day Awards for 2023. It is called ‘Blokes, Sheds, Mateship’” he continued.
This year, the local incorporated community not-for-profit group will be offering a sponsorship policy for businesses and individuals.
“We are proposing to offer sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and individuals and have developed a ‘sponsorship policy’. We intend to seek sponsorships from the community on an annual basis for a modest amount” Michael explained.
They also continue to be approached for small projects by members of the Shire.
“Our Vice President and Secretary Les Rhodes has recently spearheaded the restoration of the outside garden furniture owned by the Wallacia Progress Association. The end product looks great” he stated.
The Shed prides itself on being able to use recycled or surplus materials (timber and metals) that have been donated and to make items for sale to the community. In 2023, they plan to display items they have for sale through the website. They have recently been offered a quantity of construction plywood and hope to make items like bird and animal boxes for the benefit of wildlife in the area.
In addition, plans are underway to expand the Shed to make it a safe and comfortable place for the men and their various activities.
The recent recruitment drive has seen some new members join, leaving the Shed “abuzz” with activities.
“We welcome new members who are interested in the ethos of the Men’s Shed movement, who can benefit from being a member. Members can do as much or as little as they want to, share life, and trade skills, or learn new skills. Some just come and sit and have a chat, share stories, or do their crosswords and puzzles. We have some members who are expert at that” Michael ended.

A sad start to the year, with resident of more than 68 years, Nancy Sales passing away on the 7th of January. A tireless and active worker for the Luddenham community, she was a member of the school P&C, a Sunday school teacher for decades and a member and President of the Progress Association for more than 20 years. She was a member of both the Uniting and Anglican churches and held positions within. Nancy was also involved in other community activity, until the Covid lockdowns and ill health curtailed her involvement. She was the key organiser and leader of the village celebrations for the 100th Anniversary of the Uniting Church in 1986 and co-authored a booklet on its history. She was devoted to Luddenham and is a great loss to the family and community.
Luddenham Show will be back this year on the 5th and 6th of March. It was cancelled in 2021 and 2022 due to COVID and is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet, with a massive rodeo planned for Saturday evening along the massive fireworks display, and lots of new entertainment. Luddenham Show is the Country Show. More details next month, so save the date.
A big thanks to our Local State Member of Parliament Tanya Davies, for securing a New South Wales Government Community Building Partnership Grant for the Luddenham Progress Association to asphalt the carpark as well as air condition the hall. The carpark work has already been completed.
The Workers Hubertus Luddenham kicked off the first Sydney
Cars and Coffee on the 15th of January, with around 1,000 cars turning up. The next one is scheduled for the 19th of February. The Luddenham Country Markets will be returning to the Showground on the 19th of March.
Simon Hickey, the Chief Executive Officer of Western Sydney Airport (WSA) has told the Luddenham Progress Association that he “understands the community’s desire for clarity regarding the future planning of Luddenham Village”. He also said, “As you would be aware, planning matters and decisions are the responsibility of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment”. So, the reason for the hold up with Luddenham’s future, is the NSW State Government and I am sure the Luddenham Progress Association will be putting pressure on all our State Members to approve the NSW Planning Departments plan for Luddenham.

Requirements for this role:

Wollondilly Shire Council has welcomed the announcement of $500 million towards road repair funding for councils across the state.
The NSW State Government has recently announced the funding, which includes the Wollondilly Shire in the share of funds to help fix our 870km of flood-ravaged road network.
The Shire was declared a natural disaster area with extreme weather events in February 2020, March 2021, February 2022, March 2022, and July 2022. Council has been labouring since to repair approximately $140m in significant damage to roads in the face of ongoing wet weather, and the shortage of qualified contractors and road repair materials.
In November, $50 million was announced as part of the State’s Local Roads Pothole Repair Program, however, Wollondilly Shire Council alongside other Councils on the fringes of Greater Sydney were excluded. Mayor Matt Gould alongside Blue Mountains City Mayor Mark Greenhill OAM and Hawkesbury City Mayor Sarah McMahon strongly advocated for all three councils to be included in the program, or for additional supportive to be provided to assist with the backlog of storm damage.
They issued a joint letter to the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway and Minister for Metropolitan Roads, Natalie Ward explaining the extensive flood damage faced by the regional councils, and the lack of appropriate funds to provide short-term repairs for the community. Mayor Matt Gould also met with several key ministers late last year pushing for additional support for Council’s road network.
Mayor Matt Gould said, “This announcement is a huge win for our residents. I have worked closely with other Councils as well as Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith MP to ensure the NSW Government was aware of the critical road issues that we are facing in the Shire.”
“Road repairs remain our top priority, however we are in dire need of additional resources to enable our team to provide safer roads for our community after the damage it has sustained over the last 12 months. I look forward to receiving the funds so that we can target the critical works as quickly as possible.”
The new half a billion-dollar funding will help councils fix landslips, potholes, and other damage to roads. Funding will not be allocated according to the severity of flood damage experienced by local councils.
Instead, the amount each area receives will be determined by the total length of roads the council manages. Councils’ road network is in a peri-urban setting, with sealed and unsealed roads connecting a multitude of smaller towns and villages.
The program of works currently being undertaken in response to recent storm damage will be able to be extended (subject to final funding allocation) to help improve the condition of our roads within the Shire. This will include targeted reconstruction/ heavy patching and full reconstruction works.

Could Oral Coenzyme-Q10 Supplementation Help Patients with Ulcerative Colitis?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance, naturally made by animal cells. It increases cellular energy production. Roediger in 1980 suggested ulcerative colitis (UC) may be a cellular energy deficiency disease.
In 2015, scientists first tested CoQ10 in animal models of UC. They infused vinegar into rat colons to create colitis, and found that animals who had received 8 days of supplemental CoQ10 prior to infusion had:
1. Reduced levels of colon inflammation
2. Higher levels of colon cell:
a. antioxidant protective compounds
b. energy production
3. Better preserved colonic wall architecture
In 2016, scientists infused iodoacetate into rat colons to create colitis. Rats subsequently treated with CoQ10 showed:
1. Near normal colonic wall architecture
2. Reduced levels of inflammation
3. Potent colon cell antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities through significant increases in cell antioxidants catalase and glutathione
In 2017, researchers again infused vinegar into rat colons to create colitis, then gave rats either 10 or 30 or 100 mg/kg oral CoQ10 daily (prior or post infusion). They showed that Co Q10 dose dependently protects against vinegar-induced UC. CoQ10 significantly:
1. Reduced
a. UC related colon swelling
b. improved clinical and macroscopic tissue disease scores
c. inflammatory markers
2. Increased
a. blood antioxidant capacity
b. colonic-tissue antioxidant capacity
3. Preserved microscopic tissue architecture
This study is interesting because it showed that:
1. Oral CoQ10 given either 8 days prior, or 8 days following vinegar infusion protected rats from UC
2. CoQ10 protective effects continued to increase with increasing CoQ10 dose
3. Animals given CoQ10 after vinegar infusion at the maximal dose of 100mg/kg, had almost complete protection from UC, showing virtually no ill-effects from vinegar infusion
In 2021, UC researchers first gave human UC patients 100mg
CoQ10 twice-daily or placebo. They found that CQ10 intake:
1. Reduced UC disease severity
2. Markedly improved patient quality of life
3. Lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure
Human experiments clearly show that supplemental CoQ10:
1. Does not accumulate in blood or tissues, and
2. Does not reduce body production of CoQ9/10
And for these reasons, CoQ10 is considered a highly safe dietary supplement, with minimal side effects and low drug interaction potential’. CQ10 supplementation may be something to discuss with your GP if you have UC.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT
SETTLERS MULGOA
1300 Mulgoa Rd, Mulgoa NSW 2745
My sister Kathryn and I recently visited Settlers Mulgoa for lunch.
When I arrived, the staff greeted Kathryn and I and showed us to our table. On the table waiting for us were two glasses of ice water. Once ordering at Settlers, you order at the counter and then the friendly staff bring your food and beverages to you. The service was superb.
Our drinks and food arrived promptly, not long after placing our order.
I ordered the Reuben Sandwich which was excellent. The sandwich contained slow cooked corned beef, melted cheese, fresh watercress, sauerkraut, pickles, and a spicy Russian dressing. This was served on toasted rye sourdough and a side of chips.
The Reuben Sandwich was one of the best I have experienced in an exceptionally long time. The corned beef was thick, had plenty of flavour and along with the pickles gave this sandwich an extra tang. The dressing gave this sandwich extra flavour, and the rye bread completed this mouth-watering delight. If you are a lover of Reuben sandwiches, go and experience this sandwich for yourself.
Kathryn ordered the Battered Fish Tacos which consisted of beer battered flathead fillet, slaw, Pico di galo, cheese, and sour cream. Kathryn was impressed with her tacos. The fish tacos were full of flavour, and she said after finishing these tacos, you really felt like they filled you up.
I ordered an orange juice and Kathryn ordered an iced coffee.
In conclusion, if you are looking for somewhere relaxing to dine out and enjoy some exceptional customer service, Settlers is for you. The Staff were attentive, and I highly recommend Settlers Mulgoa. The selection of music playing in the background was spot on and not too loud. The staff did come and check that we were happy with our food and beverages and asked us for feedback on the new menu, which launched 2 days ago.
I give Settlers a ten out of ten. I thank Sophie and her team for making our experience the best it could be.
End of an Era for Local Store
It was the end of an era recently, with Warragamba’s much-loved local business, The Bowerbirds Nest of Treasures closing its doors.
Owner Joanne Vella first opened the store in October 2011. Located on Fourteenth Street in the heart of Warragamba Shopping Village, it sold an amazing variety of gifts.
“We have made the hard decision to close the store front down. This decision hasn’t been made lightly. It has been a wonderful 12 years and we wanted to say thank you to our lovely, loyal customers. We couldn’t have made it this far without you” said Joanne to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.
The Bowerbirds Nest of Treasures will continue to trade as an online only business.
“The past three years have been full of unexpected challenges that have forced us to pivot in different directions within our business. This isn’t the end, but a new beginning” she said.
“We will be maintaining a strong online presence and moving the business completely online. For all your gifting and homeware needs, make sure you check out our online store. We will still be offering local pickup and delivery” Joanne added.
Joanne has had a great time working in Warragamba for the past decade.
“We have enjoyed being a part of the local community and building relationships with our customers over the past 12 years. Being able to offer our services and being a part of local events has been special” she reflected.
“Again, thank you to everyone who has supported our small, local business” concluded Joanne.

Luddenham Show Returns
All roads will lead to Luddenham, with the annual Luddenham Show taking place on the 4th and 5th of March.
The committee is looking forward to a huge event, after having to cancel the last two shows due to COVID. Luddenham Show not only boasts some great family entertainment, but also gives a nod to the region’s vast agricultural past.
The “Country Show”, as it is known, will take place for the 117th time. After a huge upgrade, including a new cattle pavilion and animal nursery, new asphalt walkways and new grandstand seating, the grounds are set to host thousands of people for the biggest event on the Luddenham calendar.
Among the most anticipated events to take place will be the spectacular and dangerous bull ride and rodeo, along with the demolition derby and a first at Luddenham - the Eljay freestyle motorbike and BMX stunt/comedy show. There are wheelie bin races, the ever-popular sheepdog trials and of course all the fun of sideshow alley. Great displays of arts and crafts as well as cooking, photography and flowers are free to enter your handy work. Details can be obtained from the website or their printed schedules. Of course, show staples such as two full days of horse classes and judging of both cattle and poultry will be keenly fought out, with owners vying to take home a converted blue ribbon.
If watching stage entertainment is more your scene, they have you covered. The huge selection of acts taking to the podium include a poets breakfast to kick start the day. Keeping the stage buzzing are various singers, dance troops and a magician, along with a mechanical bucking bull. Furthermore, for those who wish for a bit of fun, comps ranging from fancy dress for humans as well as ice cream eating are sure to bring many laughs. New this year is the Lego master crafters competition, or watch the big men send the chips flying in the wood chopping section. Saturday night will see the band, The Mad Hatters, hit the stage. Finally, what show would be complete without the fireworks!
Luddenham Showgrounds can be found on the corner of Park Rd and is one of only three grounds in the state still wholly owned by the community. As a result, the annual show raises much needed funds for the upkeep of the facilities as well as next year’s show. Luddenham A.H & I Society has a proud history dating back to 1891, when it was reported in the papers of the time “Luddenham may fairly lay claim to having the best first show ever held in the colony!”. This year’s committee, many of whose forebears were among the first organisers, are determined to live up to that high standard.
The current committee, a small but very hard working band of local volunteers, would like to thank all their sponsors as well as the army of great helpers who lend a hand to make this country event on the outskirts of Sydney such a success. Further information can be found on their website www.luddenhamshow.com.au or on their Facebook page, Luddenham Show.

All About School Shoes
It’s back to school! Time to check that school shoes and sports shoes haven’t been outgrown or worn out. Here are our top tips for finding the correct fit*.
1) Support
Shoes must support your child’s feet. Press on the back of the shoe (heel counter) and it should be firm. Shoes should bend up at the ball of the foot (forefoot) not the middle of the shoe (midfoot). When twisting the shoe, it should move a little to adapt to the ground, but not collapse.
2) Size
New shoes should be half to three quarters of an adult thumb width longer than the longest toe. Note: the longest toe may not be the big toe! Replace shoes when toes are close to the end when fastened. Don’t wait until they are hitting the end.
The shoe is too wide if the sides that come together in the fastening section of the shoe touch when fastened. If the shoe is too narrow, the shoe won’t fasten properly. Toes should be able to wiggle without being cramped or swimming in too much space.
Check the size by removing the insole and have your child stand on it. If they are spilling over the insole or there is too much space, the fit is incorrect.
3) Fasteners
Velcro fasteners are adequate for younger children but laces will provide more support as your child grows and increases activity. If possible, teach children to tie shoelaces as early as possible (around Year 1 or 2 is ideal).
4) Materials & Manufacturing
Generally, shoes made with better quality materials will be more robust and provide better support. It is worth paying a little extra for reinforcement with stitching at the toe cap as it is likely to last longer.
5)
Wear In Shoes
Wear in new shoes for shorter periods at home before wearing them all day at school to avoid issues. If your child experiences any kind of pain, please book an assessment with us. Difficult feet to fit may also need fasteners to be adjusted or extra support provided.
Happy shoe shopping!

Generation Vape: How to Talk to your Teen about the Risks of E-Cigarettes
Parents are talking to young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but too often these conversations fail to cover the risks of vaping. A Royal Children’s Hospital ‘Child Health Poll’ found that 57% of parents have never discussed e-cigarettes with their teen. Yet around 14% of young people aged 14 – 17 years have tried vaping.
E-cigarettes, also known as ‘vapes’, are electronic devices that heat liquids to create aerosol that users inhale. Aerosol is a fine spray of chemicals and small particles that can lodge in the lungs. As these products are new to the market, there is no quality and safety standards on devices, liquids, and labelling.
Vapes contain chemicals and toxins commonly found in bug spray, weed killer and nail polish remover. Short term risks associated with vapes include vomiting, shortness of breath, poisoning, nausea, headaches, lung damage and heart palpitations. Vaping can negatively impact growing bodies and brains and is likely to cause lung and mouth cancers.
The majority of vapes contain nicotine, even if they are labelled otherwise. Nicotine is highly toxic, and the most addictive substance known. Young people who vape are 3 to 5 times more likely to take up smoking later in life.
Here are some tips for chatting with teens about the risks of vaping:
• Know the facts – keep up to date with the latest information by consulting your local GP and organisations such as the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (adf.org.au).
• Keep the conversation open, calm, and non-judgmental –Use a respectful tone of voice and body language.
• Avoid lecturing, judging, or going through your teen’s space looking for evidence – prioritise trust with your teen. We are all more likely to consider information shared with us by somebody we trust.
• Avoid exaggerating the dangers – share the facts simply and calmly.
• Explain your concerns – let your teen know you care about their health and wellbeing.
• Be a positive role model – a young person is about 55% more likely to try e-cigarettes if they have a parent who smokes. Avoid using any nicotine products in front of your children.
The journey is about to begin for thousands across the country. One that will bring laughs, tears, friendships, and lifelong memories. Kindergarten will soon start for the first time for many, including local student Austin Falzon.
This year, Austin, who is 5 and a half years old, will start school at Holy Family Primary Luddenham. Austin will join his older brother Leo who will be in Year 4, and also attends the school. His oldest brother Marcus just missed him at Holy Family and will be starting Year 7 at St Dominic’s College.
Austin is keen to join his brother and school and can’t wait to start kindergarten.
“He is looking forward to playing with his friends from preschool and learning to read,” said Rachel Falzon, Austin’s mother.
Away from school, the energetic youngster’s hobbies keep him nice and busy. His favourite things to do are playing with his cars and diggers.
So, what does he want to be when he finishes school you may ask?
“Austin wants to be a digger driver when he grows up. He’d also like to be Spiderman” smiled Rachel.
Starting school can be a day of mixed emotions for parents, grandparents, family, and friends as they farewell children for their road ahead in kindy.
“As Austin’s parents, we will be excited to see him take the big leap from preschool to big school and commence his learning journey. We feel he is ready for the learning, challenges and rewards it will bring. There may be a few (or a lot) of tears, as he is our youngest child” she ended.
Best of luck to all the local students starting and returning to school this year.

Mulgoa Valley FC Aim High
Mulgoa Valley Football Club are looking forward to a successful year, ahead of the upcoming 2023 season.
The local club will cater for teams in the Under 5’s through to the Over 35’s and All Ages. Registrations have opened for the new season.
“Due to the sustained rain and flooding, our fields never opened for the entirety of last season. This meant that there was no training at all for most teams and not a single home game all season. As a result, there was also no canteen and no funds generated. Thankfully, we had great sponsors including Better Built Homes, GWT Bathrooms and Paragon Physio to fall back on. The club is really looking forward to getting back to Gow Park this season” explained Ed Crowther of Mulgoa Valley Football Club.
Despite this, they were able to overcome adversity and remain a force in the local Penrith competition.
“Some of the highlights from last season included the Under 12’s, All Age 4’s and All Age 6’s all won their Grand Finals. Three teams in and three wins. The All Age 6’s finished Runners-Up in their competition and the All Age 4’s won their competition, winning every single game. Their only loss of the season was in the Cup, losing to a Premier League team” he said.
There were approximately 120 players registered last season. They hope to substantially increase those numbers this year. Registrations for the 2023 season can be found on the Dribl platform at https://registration.dribl.com/club/967.

Come and Join the Army Cadets
Are you aged between 13 and 18? Have you ever thought about joining army cadets? 237 Australian Army Cadet Unit Southern Highlands are currently recruiting and looking for cadets ahead of the new year.
The Australian Army Cadet Unit Southern Highlands meet at the Picton-Thirlmere-Bargo Subbranch, located in Thirlmere. They parade on Monday nights from 6:00pm to 9:00pm during school terms, and have many opportunities for weekend involvement and school holiday programs with camps and community activities. Some of the activities that army cadets participate in include drill and ceremonial parades, abseiling, watermanship, use of service firearms (under direct supervision), navigation, living in the field, leadership, and management, first aid and survival training. They also have a strong community involvement in their local council area and enjoy getting involved in helping the community at a number of events.
Events this year will be Brigadoon at Bundanoon, ANZAC Day, Camp Wombaroo and Bileola, Annual Field Exercise, and Remembrance Day.
“Army cadets are an experience like no other! In a society that is fuelled by being great global citizens, army cadets provide experiences that enable them to extend beyond their self-imposed limits, teach youth responsibility, promote resilience, selfreliance, self-esteem, and self-discipline, and develop and recognises a broad range of skills including leadership and teamwork” explained LT Kirslyn Conlon of 237 Australian Army Cadet Unit Southern Highlands.
What does LT Kirslyn Conlon enjoy most about being a part of army cadets?
“Well, there are lots of reasons! For a start, you get to go camping, abseiling, boating and learn to properly use firearms. Apart from getting involved in all kinds of action and adventures, you also make heaps of new friends. Joining the army cadets is a chance to experience a really awesome time by getting into some adventurous activities conducted in a military setting.
“As a cadet, you learn to be confident, self-sufficient, and willing to ‘have a go’. It’s your opportunity to discover new challenges and have some unbelievable fun. You also learn to lead others and work as a member of a team. You are able to do things for yourself and help your friends learn too”.

Rosie got her first vet nursing job back in 2002, started her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and became a fully qualified veterinary nurse in 2004. There are many things Rosie loves about vet nursing but her absolute favourite thing is giving the patients that extra bit of TLC while they're in our care, as it builds trust and it goes a long way to reduce any anxiety or fears they may have while they're here at the hospital.
Rosie taught Puppy Preschool at another vet before and loved it! She is currently undergoing training so that she can start teaching Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills as well.
Rosie started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in July 2022.

Growing up, my biggest aspiration in life was to become a vet since I loved being around animals and of course was hooked on shows such as Bondi Vet. 10 years later, I am so grateful to be making steps in achieving my dream – starting with studying Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at University of Sydney and now gaining invaluable experience as an animal attendant at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. She has also begun training to teach Puppy Preschool, which has been so interesting and rewarding.
Tayla – Groomer

Sharing History
Luddenham resident and Mulgoa Valley Gazette columnist Wayne Willmington is passionate when it comes to local history. So much so, that he has written a book chronicling early history of the area.
Wayne is the author of ‘Luddenham The Story – Part 1 The Early Days 1813 to 1913’. The historical book tells of the first 100 years of Luddenham from 1813 through to 1913.
The Willmington family have a rich history of settling in and shaping Luddenham. In 1895, the Willmington’s took over Luddenham Post Office and ran it until 1993. It was opened in 1872 by Mr Beardow and in 1875, Miss Caroline Wallace became Postmistress.
With many hours spent researching and trawling through historical records, it was quite the experience for Wayne to learn about the early days of Luddenham and its interesting past when writing the book.
“It took about 4 years to write Luddenham The Story –Part 1 The Early Days 1813 to 1913. When learning as I was writing, I found the information to be so amazing about the early days here. The residents that lived here were fascinating people that lead incredible lives” reflected Wayne.
The construction of Western Sydney Airport has led to changes all throughout the local area. Wayne believes that writing books like this are an important way of keeping local history alive and teaching the next generation about our past.
“With all the changes in Luddenham, it is very important to record and tell the local history. I hope that people find it as enjoyable to read as I have found writing it” he said.
Luddenham The Story – Part 1 The Early Days 1813 to 1913 is available to purchase for $15 from the Luddenham Post Office.

“Has anyone ever done something wrong to you? Of course they have! We are wronged by others and we do wrong to them. Some things are trivial and are of little consequence. Some things are much more significant. While a person’s actions may always have consequences on a relationship and impact it in a variety of ways, for any relationship to move forward we need to be willing to extend forgiveness.
Does a person deserve our forgiveness? Of course not! A person never deserves to be forgiven. That is the whole point of forgiveness. We are choosing not to hold something against another person and let go of the desire for personal justice. Jesus taught a radical forgiveness of others based on the forgiveness that God extends to each one of us. The logical goes like this: if you have experienced great forgiveness, then you will be a person who is willing to forgive others!
There is more to the story as well. If you understand that you are a person who needs forgiving, then it means you know you have done wrong to others. Recognising the wrong we do and seeking God’s forgiveness is the first step in changing the way we live so we really love others.”

Well, there it is! 2022 has been filed and packed away. Good, bad or otherwise - it’s now one for the archives.
Like they say, 2023 offers a blank book full of new and exciting opportunities. The pen is in your hand and the chapters are waiting to be scribed!
One of the best lessons I put into practice last year was to not hold onto things that are weighing you down. Focus on what brings you positive energy and happiness and be sure to surround yourself with the same. Mark my words, you’ll feel empowered by doing so.
We start the year grateful to our advertisers, who make it possible for us to compile and distribute our publications to 28,000 letterboxes each month across 20 suburbs. We urge you to call on their businesses if required, be sure to let them know you saw them in the ‘Gazette’.
Enjoy this first edition of ‘Your Community News’ for 2023.
‘You glow differently when you have good people with good intentions in your life’.
