Western Sydney Airport Preliminary Flight Paths Released

The preliminary flight paths for Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) have been made public. For additional transparency, the preliminary flight paths, along with estimated aircraft noise impacts, are now available to communities through an online interactive Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool.

This tool will let people search an address or location and get a clear picture of impact of the preliminary flight paths including the expected altitude at that location, daily aircraft numbers and the predicted aircraft noise.

Supporting material has also been released to explain the approaches to the preliminary flight paths design and noise modelling.

They will hold community information and feedback sessions as well as community information stalls across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains over the coming months. Communities will be able to find out more information and speak with the flight path design team at these events.

These preliminary flight paths have been developed by an Expert Steering Group led by The Hon Catherine King MP Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government’s department and including AirServices Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Department of Defence, and airport operator WSA Co.

Importantly, the preliminary flight paths were developed according to Airspace Design Principles that reflect community feedback from the ‘proof-of-concept’ flight paths released in 2015. These principles include minimising flights over residential areas and reducing the impact on the community of aircraft operations at night.

Later this year, they will release a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that examines the noise, social and environmental impacts of the preliminary flight paths and includes a draft noise insulation and property acquisition policy.

The Albanese Government is committed to balancing the needs of the community, environment, industry, and users of the broader Greater Sydney airspace, while maintaining safety as a priority, in the design of WSI’s flight paths.

That is why the community will be able to provide feedback on the draft EIS during a formal public exhibition period following its release. This feedback will be considered as they finalise the flight path design ahead of the new airport starting operations by late 2026.

They encourage people to visit their Online Community Portal at wsiflightpaths.gov.au to use the Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool, read the supporting material, and get details of the community information and feedback sessions.

Warragamba African Lion Safari 55 Years On

This month marks the 55-year anniversary since the official opening of the African Lion Safari, located in Warragamba. Visitors of the park would drive on a 4-kilometre road, where lions roamed freely. It was common for the lions to approach cars driving on the safari, biting bits off motor vehicles, and climbing onto bonnets. Park workers would frequently have to retrieve parts from cars, such as bumpers and side mirrors.

With a scenic railway and a dolphinarium, the safari park would attract up to 200,000 visitors each year. The 100-acre reserve featured many other exotic animals, including tigers, bears, sea lions, and water buffalo. Activities that were held daily at the park included a parrot circus, a dolphin and sea lion show, kangaroo feeding, and visits to Pets Corner, home to a range of non-native animals. A local community service was also established by the park where unwanted or sick livestock could be disposed of and used as food for the lions and tigers.

The park was opened on a block of land near Warragamba Dam on August 17th, 1968, by Stafford Bullen. An additional park was opened by Stafford called Bullen’s Animal World, located in Wallacia. Here visitors watched a circus and drove through an animal petting zoo. The Bullen family was a renowned circus family in Australia who were responsible for bringing the Great Moscow Circus to the country.

With extensive work required to upgrade the Lion Safari Park following legislative changes, the facility closed in 1991. Despite the parks closure, the Bullen family continued to hold the animals on site and bred the lions and tigers.

On August 7, 1995, three lions escaped from the park gates and roamed the nearby streets and backyards of Silverdale. One of the lions was shot dead by a park handler after smashing down a fence and mauling a family dog in Marsh Road. Following this unfortunate attack, the park was required to upgrade its facilities to prevent any more animals from escaping.

Today, the land where the African Lion Safari Park once sat has been demolished and is being built on for residential development. For many, it is sad seeing such a thrilling place in ruin, however it will remain a wonderful memory for those who grew up with it as their playground.

Shop Local at Luddenham Uniting Church Markets

Luddenham Uniting Church Markets are held on the first Saturday of each month (except January) from 8:00am to 1:00pm. The market has been operating for the past 25 years, with profits going towards the preservation of the historic church, local and rural charities, and Pacific countries in need.

The church members serve hot and cold drinks as well as fresh sandwiches and Devonshire tea in the small hall, which contains very popular used clothes and bric-a-brac. They also run the barbecue, serving egg and bacon rolls and sausage sandwiches.

The variety of stalls include roses and other plants, handmade leather goods, craft, cupcakes, earrings, candles and fragrant items, gourmet foods, soap, and shampoo bars, second hand farm items, bric-a-brac, second hand clothing and dolls. The book stall is run by long-time resident and church member June Roots, who ensures all money raised on her $1 per book stall is donated to The Cancer Council. They also support Mama Lana’s Community Foundation by having a collection basket for pantry and other items.

New stall holders are always welcome, depending upon the availability of sites. Most stalls are outside, though there is limited capacity in the Progress Hall. The number of stalls varies, from about 20 to 40, weather permitting. The current cost of a stall is $20 to $25, based on its location.

“Markets, like ours, are important for the local community for many reasons” explained Dianne Whyte, Church Secretary.

“It’s a regular social gathering event. People know when it’s on and often arrange to meet up with family and friends. Newcomers to the community have the chance to meet locals and everyone is warmly welcomed.

“It’s an opportunity for our church to raise much needed funds for charities and to maintain our church.

“When times are tough, the opportunity to pick up a bargain in clothing or other items is really handy.

“Stallholders can supplement their income by often producing and selling items.

“Donations of goods are gratefully accepted, and, in this way, people can feel that they are helping their community” she said. Find them on Facebook by searching Luddenham Uniting Church Markets.

If you’re interested in having a stall, contact Tracey (Market Co-ordinator) on 0412 888087. For any other information, contact Dianne (Church Secretary) on 0414 831719.

Accountant Charged after Investigation into $26m

Tax-Related Fraud – Raptor Squad

Wallacia Community Working Together

Did you attend Wallacia Public School? The Wallacia Progress Association is helping to organise a ‘Back to Wallacia School’ event for the weekend of the 15th and 16th June 2024.

Previous students, staff or families that were connected to the school can come along for a day of memories, as well as catching up with old friends. We have a wonderful local lady who went to the school in the 1930s, and it will be fascinating to hear some of the stories from our older generations. They are looking for people to help with the organisation and any contact with exstudents and families from the school, who have moved away from the area. You can make a weekend of it with an event in the Wallacia Hotel on the Saturday night! Please contact them through their website at www.wallaciaprogressassociation. com.au or email wallaciaprogressassociation@gmail.com.

The Wallacia Progress Association has set up a local history group, with the aim of producing a book in time for the Back to Wallacia School event. The Wallacia School Centenary of Education book was published in 1997, and it is time to update and broaden the history of Wallacia and the surrounding area. They need more people to help or just provide information or memories.

Two people have faced court, charged by Raptor Squad detectives investigating alleged large-scale tax-related fraud and proceeds of crime offences to the value of $26 million.

In June 2023, officers attached to State Crime Command’s Raptor Squad – with assistance from the Tax Practitioners Board – commenced an investigation into reports of fraudulent misconduct by a registered accounting firm.

Following extensive inquiries, about 9.20am on Tuesday 11 July 2023, strike force detectives attended a home in Silverdale, where they arrested a 36-year-old man.

A short time later, detectives attended a business in Penrith where they arrested a 25-year-old woman.

During subsequent search warrants executed at the properties, officers located electronic devices, hard drives, and documentation relevant to their investigation. They also located a small amount of a substance believed to be cocaine.

The items were seized to undergo further forensic examination.

The pair were taken to St Marys Police Station, where the man was charged with 16 offences including 14 counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage etc by deception, knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and appeared in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday 12 July, 2023.

The woman was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime >$5000. She was granted conditional bail to also appear before Penrith Local Court on Thursday 27 July 2023.

Police will allege in court the man defrauded at least eight accounting clients to the value of $26 million in a bid to fund his lavish lifestyle and gambling habit, whilst the woman attempted to conceal the misconduct.

Police will further allege the man had links to Organised Criminal Networks (OCN).

Investigations continue.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https:// nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.

Our community owned Progress Hall is quite unique, and they would love it to be used more often. It is available to hire, with the details on their website. They have yoga with Amy on Thursday evenings and the Wallacia Wattles seniors group meet every fortnight in the hall, on Tuesday mornings from 10:00am till 12:00 noon. What would you like to come along to? Is anyone interested in table tennis or a dancercise class?

The next General Meeting for the community is on Tuesday 8th August at 7.30pm in the hall. They have invited the team from the Western Sydney Airport flight path team to discuss the major impact of nighttime flights over Wallacia.

Active Ageing Group for Over 60’s

Big Results for Little A’s

Warradale Little Athletics Club have had an outstanding 2022/2023 and are preparing for the new season ahead.

Season 2022/2023 saw 116 athletes register with the local club. Many too would go on to compete at representative championships, representing Warradale.

There were 23 athletes that competed at the Central West Metropolitan Zone Championships, which saw 22 qualify for the Region 7 Championships. Under 7 athletes don’t progress to Regionals, however their athlete Lilly was fortunate to medal in the 500m pack start.

From the Regional Championships, 4 athletes qualified for the State Championships. Heidi in the Under 12 Girl’s Multi Class had some fantastic performances, with setting two State Records in Long Jump and Discus.

They held their Club Championships as a one day event, that was well attended. There were 11 new records set at the meet.

“As the Club’s Registrar and Championship Officer, it’s always great to see athletes coming back each season and seeing new families joining our club. Watching athletes striving to better their own performances and the way they show great sportsmanship towards others, whether it’s at our grounds or at outside events, is testament to their commitment to our sport. It is something that we are proud of” said Annette Tillman of Warradale Little Athletics Club.

Their Presentation was held at Luddenham Showground. The award winners included Kayla (Junior Athlete), Annalise (Intermediate Athlete), Charlotte (Senior Athlete), Noah (AWD Athlete), Lachlan and David (Barry Garment Memorial Club Person) and Heidi (Lachlan Smith Memorial Encouragement Award). Abbey and Gabrielle were inducted as Junior Life Members, having been at the club from Tiny Tots to Under 17’s.

In attendance were Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan MP, Wollondilly Councillor Bev Spearpoint, Central West Metropolitan Zone Coordinator Robbi Sain and sponsors Nigel and Jody Smith, who presented awards.

Western Sydney Youth Head to Global Event with Pope Francis

The Catholic community in Western Sydney is cheering on 170 young people from Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains who are getting ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at one of the world’s largest global events this year: World Youth Day with Pope Francis.

This is the first time many young people will be part of an event of this scale, and they have the support of their schools, parishes, and families to boost them along to the massive event being held in Lisbon, Portugal from 1 to 6 August 2023.

The World Youth Day festival is a significant celebration of the global Catholic Church. Millions are expected to attend from around the world.

Coordinator for the trip, James Camden, is confident that the journey will reap rewards for each pilgrim as well as the Church community back in Australia.

“The pilgrimage has created an enormous sense of excitement amongst the dozens of parishes and schools who are sending pilgrims on this special trip,” he said.

“We expect many pilgrims will come back energised, having been to one of the most unique events in the world. They will meet hundreds of like-minded people and have the opportunity to develop spiritually.

“If past experience is any guide, we will see a new generation of young leaders ready to step up in their parish and school communities for many years to come.”

The Diocese of Parramatta has a thriving youth culture, with Catholic youth groups throughout its 47 parishes, as well as 80 Catholic schools teaching 43,000 school students.

The World Youth Day pilgrims flew out on 21 July and will be visiting sacred sites in France, Spain, and Portugal before they head to Lisbon for World Youth Day.

Locals Triumph at Business Awards

The communities of Silverdale and Warragamba were well represented at the 2023 Wollondilly Local Business Awards, with three businesses announced as best in their categories and winning awards.

Held at The Manor in Club Menangle recently, In-Motion Danceworks from Silverdale won Outstanding Performing Arts. From Warragamba, Pietro Italian Restaurant won Outstanding Restaurant and Dam Break won Outstanding Café, respectively.

Winning the awards was a proud achievement for the local businesses and their hard working and dedicated teams.

“All our team were super excited and proud of ourselves for winning this award. It’s a great feeling to be acknowledged for all the hard work we all put in.

“It means the world to us knowing that what we do makes a difference within our community. In-Motion Danceworks has been running for 29 years and we have never put ourselves forward for any type of award, so to not only be nominated but then go on to win is amazing” said Rebecca Elliott of In-Motion Danceworks.

“To win the award last year was a huge confidence booster to my team and I but to win it back to back is truly humbling.

“It shows that our mandate of providing quality food, good service and treating our customers like family as a business plan is working and is the fundamental foundation of our business,” explained Anthony Penna of Pietro Italian Restaurant.

“Winning the award for Most Outstanding Café was very exciting, but more than that it was extremely satisfying. Our whole team take great pride in setting the bar high, for service and quality. Receiving this felt like a big thank you. We’re all very proud to bring this award back to Warragamba,” stated Jo and Steven Inglis of Dam Break Café.

They would like to thank the community for their support.

“The main reason that I enjoy running my business in Silverdale and surrounding areas is the fact that our locals are always so supportive of not only us as a business, but their children.

“Thank you to everyone for their ongoing support over the past 29 years,” said Rebecca.

“I would like to say a massive thankyou to my wife Michelle and our three beautiful daughters for their support, all of my Junior Staff, both of my Head Chefs Allan and Tej, and my Chef De Partie Khyle. Special mention to our Restaurant Manager and two time youth of business award finalist Chantel for all her efforts. Last but certainly not least, to the people of our community and abroad for your continued support, thank you” Anthony reflected.

“The last 4 years serving the local community have been an absolute pleasure. They have made us feel very welcome. Some call us family. Thank you to all,” ended Jo and Steven.

Best of luck to all three businesses, as they progress to the next round of awards.

Kids and Pets: Tips for Building a Safe and Respectful Relationship

Around 63% of Australian households host a furry member of the family. Children reap many benefits from having pets; the research suggests that that beyond companionship, caring for animals may support the development of a child’s non-verbal communication skills and empathy.

Looking after pets can be a positive learning experience for kids, but the care of an animal should not be left to a child alone. Parents must play an active and thoughtful role in teaching children how to care for animals responsibly and safely.

Pets should never be bought or adopted on a whim (even if your child begs and begs). A cat or dog is a long-term commitment for the whole family. When calculating the forecasted costs of your new furry companion, do not underestimate veterinary costs over a pet’s lifetime.

Always supervise your child with the family pet. Be in eye and ear shot of toddlers and babies around animals and stay close in case you need to intervene. Keep animals securely contained and away from infants when you are not in the room and establish separate spaces in the house for pets and young children.

Help your child recognise your pet’s cues of stress or fear. Together, you and child need to look out for both the obvious signs of distress (e.g. cats hissing, dogs growling) as well as the more subtle signs (e.g. a cat swishing its tail). Children should be encouraged to give animals space when appropriate, including at sleeping and eating times.

It is essential that you model respect for animals so that your child can learn by example. Children learn more from observing us than listening to what we say. Show your child how to speak calmly and quietly with animals and handle them with gentleness. Praise your child when they do the right thing, for example “great job giving soft pats”.

NCNS in partnership with RSPCA hosts regular Pet Days at Cranebrook Neighbourhood Centre to offer subsidised desexing and micro-chipping. Check out our Facebook page to learn more: https://www.facebook.com/NepeanCommunity. Follow these tips and you can create a healthy and happy home for both kids and pets.

Book Review your

novel is a highly recommended addition to any bookshelf. She weaves a tale of magic, nature, and music based on Scandinavian fairy tales and legends.

The story revolves around Esther and her infinite love for her sister, Aura, who has disappeared. The family has fractured since the disappearance and they are all struggling with the loss. Esther sets out to discover the mystery of Aura’s last few months. A journey that takes her, reluctantly, from home in Tasmania to Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

While reconnecting with her family roots, Esther discovers myths, legends and symbols that begin a transformation in her as she finds the courage to allow herself to be immersed in grief, joy, and love. The local stories and legends are fascinating, and then she adds another dimension with the 'back to the 80's' themes, introducing fun cultural references from those years.

Initially I couldn’t relate to Esther, I found her tiresome and slightly irritating. It took a while for me to get into the book. But the writing is so delightful and almost musical, it is impossible to not become enthralled. In retrospect, I realise that this was about her journey and she didn’t really like the person she was either. Esther at the end is a different person. She had unresolved issues to face and Holly Ringland actually writes so beautifully about the pain of grief and loss and family conflict. Ringland’s prose is magical and written with gentleness.

I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to Scandinavia through Esther’s eyes, and the ending was satisfying.

Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains’ most outstanding apprentices, trainees, students, businesses that champion training, trainers and training organisations were recognised at the 2023 NSW Training Awards.

Raychel White and Mia Lewis took the top honours at the 2023 NSW Training Awards regional ceremony held on Friday, 30 June 2023, at Novella on the Park, Abbotsbury.

Nursery operations apprentice Raychel White from Penrith was named the Apprentice of the Year while Early Childhood Education and Care trainee Mia Lewis from Lalor Park took out the Trainee of the Year award.

Raychel pursued her apprentice from a love of nature and volunteering in the horticulture industry and was recognised for her exceptional performance and commitment to learning and skills development in the workplace at Penrith City Council and TAFE NSW.

Trainee of the Year award winner Mia Lewis was inspired to make a difference in the lives of young people following a week of high school work experience and was recognised for her ability to enrich the lives of the children she cared for and educated each day at Keen Kiddies Early Learning Centre.

Silverdale’s Montayah Astruc was also named the VET in Schools Student of the Year.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Tim Crakanthorp said the finalists and winners at the awards showcased the world class vocational education and training (VET) sector in the region and demonstrated the breadth of rewarding career opportunities offered by VET, providing real skills for real careers.

“This year, on the 68th anniversary of these prestigious awards, we received a record number of entries showcasing the energy and enthusiasm around VET in NSW,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

Welcome to the Family Dr Maria

It is with great excitement that we announce an addition to the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital family.

Last month we welcomed a new Veterinarian to the team, Dr Maria Scheible. With the addition of Dr Maria, Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital now has six Veterinarians able to provide high quality care for your fur babies.

Growing up, Maria always knew she wanted to work with animals, and the dream of becoming a veterinarian was sparked when she found an interest in high school biology. She spent several years of her childhood in Japan, where her family adopted their first pet, a Miniature Schnauzer named Muffin, before moving back to Sydney in 2009.

She has volunteered at organisations such as the Animal Welfare League and WIRES, and has also spent some time pet-sitting and working as a veterinary nurse before becoming qualified. In 2022, she graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation, she decided to take several months off to pursue her interests and travel back to Japan to spend time with friends and relatives, before returning to Sydney and joining the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital as a new graduate Veterinarian.

Currently, her passion lies with small animals and ensuring her furry patients receive a high level of care that will ultimately enhance their quality of life. In her spare time, Maria enjoys baking, travelling, being outdoors, exploring new places to eat, and spending time with her two Miniature Schnauzers, Cooper and Moose.

HEALTH MATTERS

Effect of Multi-Strain Probiotics on Remission of Ulcerative Colitis

As we saw last month:

1. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is considered incurable.

2. Medical approaches involve pharmacotherapy - antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and/or immunosuppressive drugs; surgical intervention (sometimes extensive).

3. These are supportive, not curative; may have side effects requiring discontinuation.

4. 20-30% of patients don’t respond/are forced off medication, leading to colectomy.

5. Human UC patients have alterations in gut microbial composition.

6. Inappropriate gut flora may be a contributor to UC disease. We’ve previously examined various microbial UC treatments:

1. Single strain probiotics (Mutaflor),

2. Transplantation of donor stool alone (FMT)

3. FMT plus diet modifications

Open-labelled and randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trials (RCT) have also been conducted using a probiotic containing 8-bacteria, namely:

• Streptococcus thermophilus

• Bifidobacterium breve

• Bifidobacterium longum

• Bifidobacterium infantis

• Lactobacillus paracasei

• Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus

• Lactobacillus acidophilus

• Lactobacillus plantarum

Bibiloni et al (2005), studied 34 adult active-UC patients (while on steroids or mesalazine) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning and

night for 6 weeks. 53% of these UC patients achieved remission, 24% a significant clinical response, 9% no response, 9% a worsening of symptoms. In total, 77% of patients’ symptoms improved on multistrain probiotics.

Lee et al, (2012) studied 24 adult patients with active UC (concomitant medications not specified) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning and night for 8 weeks. 46% of UC patients achieved remission, 21% significant clinical response, 25% had either no response or some symptom-worsening. In total, 67% of patients improved on multi-strain probiotics.

Sood et al (2009) conducted an RCT involving 147 adults with active UC (not on steroids; but with oral mesalazine, azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine allowed) given 2 sachets of probiotics morning and night, or placebo for 12 weeks:

After 6 weeks:

i. 33% of the probiotic’s patients, only

ii. 10% of placebo patients halved their symptom scores.

After 12 weeks:

i. 42.9% of probiotics patients achieved remission, only 15.7% on placebo.

ii. 52% of probiotics patients achieved significant symptom scores decreases, only 19% on placebo.

iii. Symptom decrease-magnitudes were significantly greater for those on probiotics.

These studies clearly show that multi-strain probiotics are a generally safe and effective adjunctive treatment for achieving clinical response and remission in UC.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

It is all too easy to see the negatives in life and dwell on them. Let me share a story of something that happened to me. I thought I had returned to the wrong car at the shops. The car had a ding just behind the driver’s door. I thought, ‘this isn’t my car, I don’t have a ding there.’ Sure enough, while I had been shopping, someone had opened their car door into my car. It was easy to feel wronged, annoyed, and lose a bit of faith in the goodwill of the average Australian. Despite all these things being true, there was lots to be thankful for that day. I had just come back from Coles and had a trolley of food for the family. I had a roof over my head, and I know that I am loved by those around me.

The ding in the car was only a tiny thing, but what about something bigger? Even during the deepest grief, or the strongest pain, there are still things for which we can be thankful. Difficulty doesn’t eliminate thankfulness.

The Apostle Paul, who knew what hardship was like, wrote this: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). No matter what challenges he faced, he always knew God’s love towards him and so the glass always felt full.

The long-awaited draft flightpaths have been released for Western Sydney Airport and they look good for the Luddenham Village, with the ANEC noise contours reducing by about 700 metres back to around Adams Road. Also Twin Creeks have had ANEC noise contours reduced, now with only about fifteen houses in the south end affected.

According to the Aircraft Overflight Noise Tool, Luddenham Village “falls outside of selected ANEC noise contours for WSI, however you may still see and hear aircraft flying to and from WSI at a noise level of around 65 decibels.” Most of Twin Creeks “falls outside of selected ANEC noise contours for WSI, however you may still see and hear aircraft flying to and from WSI at a noise level of around 80 decibels”. You can check the noise at your address by visiting http://www.wsiflightpaths.gov.au.

Western Sydney Airport are looking for an airline catering partner to establish a facility at Western Sydney International. This is a rare opportunity at a location close to motorways, and with direct airside access.

Luddenham Progress Association President and Vice President have spent six hours filming a story for SBS Insight about Luddenham and why the State Government has not signed off on the NSW Planning Proposal to save Luddenham. More filming is to occur soon, and the one-hour show is expected to air around the end of August.

Well done to Invogue Dance Studios Luddenham, who had twenty-eight dancers provide the half time entertainment to a sellout crowd of 25,000 fans at Belmore Stadium during July.

August is generally the month of Annual General Meetings and will see the Luddenham Progress have their AGM on Wednesday the 3rd of August in the hall at 8pm. The Show Society will hold their AGM on Wednesday August 10th at 8pm at the Showground. Both organisations are looking for new members.

Shaheen Aumeer-Donovan (Practice Manager) & Philip Aumeer-Donovan (Clinical Manager and Podiatrist)

Biomechanical Assessments (Part 1)

A biomechanical assessment is a series of investigations conducted by a podiatrist to ascertain how the structure and function of a patient’s feet, lower legs, and lifestyle factors contribute to issues they are having. Why do a Biomechanical Assessment?

Pain

An assessment will help identify the source and cause of pain, as well as any structural and/or functioning issues that should be addressed to treat the pain.

Child’s Growth

If there are concerns about the development or co-ordination of a child, an assessment can identify issues that need to be addressed or put your mind at ease.

Genetic Conditions / Neurological Disorders / Brain Injuries

Hereditary ailments (HAV or bunions, EDS, etc.), neurological disorders (CMT, MS, CP, Parkinson’s, muscular dystrophies, etc.), and brain injuries (traumatic brain injury, stroke, etc.) can affect the feet, balance, and/or coordination. Developing a good relationship with a podiatrist skilled in the biomechanics of complex cases is essential to track the progress of the disease’s effect on the feet and provide the correct support at the right time.

With a family history of genetic conditions, at-risk patients could also benefit from assessment, even without symptoms, as it may be possible to slow the progress of the disease with early monitoring and intervention.

Acute Trauma

Once an acute injury has healed, any residual pain can be investigated with an assessment. If the foot has been immobilised for some time (such as in a moon boot), structures involved in or around the injury may have weakened and require more support or rehabilitation. Sometimes compensating for the injury can cause secondary trauma that needs a different intervention to allow complete healing.

Chronic / Repeat Injuries

Poor or unsupported foot mechanics can be the cause of an injury that just won’t heal or keeps recurring.

Shoes Wearing Quickly

If shoes are wearing out particularly fast, especially if one side wears quicker than the other, the foot mechanics are likely contributing to that. An assessment will determine if the foot needs to be supported more to reduce the pressure on the shoes, or whether a change of shoes to a style better suited to the foot will help.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Pietro italian ristorante 41 Fourteenth st, Warragamba

I love Italian food, so I was pretty excited to try Pietro Italian Ristorante with Luke. Only a short 20-minute drive from Penrith, this hidden gem is located in the beautiful township of Warragamba.

We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation, but the staff were instantly accommodating and happy to seat us ahead of our booking time. We were served complimentary meatballs in Napoli sauce as we were seated, and they tasted divine.

The menu had a great selection of food ranging from pizza, pasta, risotto, salads, and chef’s suggestions. We decided to order an entrée of arancini, followed by pizza and gnocchi for mains.

The crisp arancini balls were served quickly. Each plate had one large, crumbed rice ball filled with bolognaise and mozzarella cheese. Served with a delicious addition of Napoli sauce and parsley, the arancini had an amazing crunch and was served at a perfect temperature. Overall, it was a great start to our meal.

Soon after, our pizza was served. We ordered the Vinni traditional pizza, which was topped with ham, cabanossi, mushroom, capsicum, pineapple, onions, and olives. The base was perfectly crunchy and cooked to perfection. All of the toppings balanced each other out perfectly and the cheese was not too overpowering.

The gnocchi came out soon after and was served with parmesan and chilli on the side. It smelt amazing and our stomachs were rumbling just looking at the dish. The gnocchi were cooked al dente, with a light, squidgy texture. It was complimented beautifully by the smooth and creamy mixed red and white sauce.

While we were eating, the owner of the restaurant, Anthony, made sure to say hi and ensure we were enjoying our food. I watched and he continued to interact with almost every table in the restaurant which was very nice to see.

Overall, our experience at Pietro Italian Ristorante was exceptional. Not only was the food amazing but every single staff member was friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere was great. With ample serving sizes it is well worth the price. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Tayla

In 1934, a gentleman by the name of George Robey, along with other local parents, decided to form an organisation for the youth of Australia to encourage them with their love of aviation. This organisation was called the Australian Air League.

Since this time, the Australian Air League has been teaching young boys and girls nationwide all about aviation, while helping them develop important life skills like leadership, discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork.

The Australian Air League started with a small Squadron of 30 Cadets in Manly NSW. Since then, membership has expanded throughout NSW by the thousands. They currently have Squadrons in areas as far north as Maitland and as far south as the Southern Highlands. There are also Squadrons in the ACT, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.

NSW Group has its own Air Activities Centre at Camden Aerodrome. This centre is run by volunteer pilots and mechanics who help educate their future pilots and teach them to fly. Squadrons also attend joy flights with their members at the centre.

Each week, their members attend their local Squadrons, where they will learn valuable skills and take part in fun and interesting activities and classes. Some of their classes include meteorology, navigation, photography, and community service. Squadrons also attend training camps, recreational camps, sport days, ANZAC parades, local parades, and group reviews where competitions are held.

The organisation is entirely self-funded. It is also staffed by adult members who are volunteers. These volunteers give their time to help encourage and educate its members about aviation and life skills. All adult members and volunteers are Working with Children checked.

They welcome boys and girls from the age of 8 years old from all different cultures and backgrounds. Parents and families are welcome to support or even join their local Squadron as a volunteer.

When you join the Australian Air League, you will make new friends and take part in fun and exciting activities, on the ground and in the air.

The Australian Air League is running both a fun and educational program that is making fine citizens out of our young Australians.

For more information of the Australian Air League and your nearest Squadron, please visit their website at www.airleague. com.au or email them at info@airleague.com.au.

HELPFUL PHONE NUMBERS

An active community such as ours always has plenty to write about, this month being no exception.

We always encourage our readers to be supportive of local events and businesses while actively engaging in local issues.

Today I took a call from a dear resident who simply called to thank us for making the Gazette available to readers, free of charge and directly to their letterboxes. She went on to say it was her monthly highlight and if it wasn’t for us, she wouldn’t have known where to go or who to turn to when she recently needed a new Garage Door.

I pinch myself each and every month as we compile the latest news and happenings across the community. I’m so very glad that I’m a part of being able to facilitate and connect the dots across the broader community.

Enjoy this month’s read, and be sure to tell our wonderful and supportive advertisers that you saw them right here in the Gazette.

‘Whatever makes your soul happy, do more of that!’.
