The NSW Government has confirmed that once operational, the WestConnex M4-M5 Link project will be officially referred to as extensions of the M4 and M8 motorways.

Once complete, the 7.5 kilometre underground mega tunnels will connect the two motorways, providing a seamless link between Haberfield and St Peters and cutting travel times by up to 40 minutes between Western Sydney and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said the operational names aligned with the NSW motorways’ numbering system, making it easier for motorists travelling across the broader network.

“We are in the final stages of one of the most significant road infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia,” Ms Ward said.

“Naming the tunnels the M4 and M8 motorways will help motorists join the dots on the new and improved network when the tunnels open next year.

“Once complete, the tunnels will significantly improve connections between west and southwest Sydney, reducing travel times into the city for Western Sydney residents.

“This is all about making a real difference to people’s daily lives, with our Government committed to providing them with the transport connections they need to move quickly and safely across our city.”

The new link between the M4 and the M8 is expected to open in early 2023 and will connect to the Rozelle Interchange at the end of 2023, marking the completion of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, WestConnex.

The project will also include future links to the Western Harbour Tunnel, Sydney Gateway and the M6, to better connect communities across the city and improve freight routes.

St Marys Driver Testing Centre Open

Almost

NSW’s new dedicated driver testing centre opening in Sydney’s west.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the facility at 75-105 Mamre Road, St Marys would boost the number of driving tests completed each week after impacts caused by COVID-19 restrictions.

“The centre will offer more than 450 driving tests each week for customers as well as more than 1000 computer-based examinations including driver knowledge tests,” Mr Dominello said.

“Whether customers are trying to get their L Plates or aiming to graduate to their P Plates, the centre will get more customers out on the road sooner.

“The NSW Government is investing $3.47 million into the St Marys Driver Testing Centre, a new Mobile Testing Centre and the creation of jobs to help tackle the testing backlog.

“More than 38 staff including 20 driver testers will work across the St Marys Driver Testing Centre and Mobile Testing Centre to conduct testing and assist customers with their transactions.”

Mr Dominello said the new Mobile Testing Centre, a 12.5-metre-long bus, is due to be operational from late October 2022 and would support customers across Sydney.

“The vehicle which has the capacity to include up to 10 computers for knowledge testing and facilitate driver testing would be deployed to various locations across Sydney where there is a demand for testing,” he said.

“The Mobile Testing Centre would have the capacity to complete up to 350 computer-based examinations and up to 320 driving tests each week for customers.

“Service NSW appreciates customers’ patience and understanding while the team has worked to get driver testing back on track.

“COVID-19 safety measures remain in place for driving tests to ensure the safety of staff and customers. Both driver tests and customers are required to wear masks for the duration of the examination.”

The St Marys Driver Testing Centre will be open from 8.00am-4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Construction is well underway on Youngcare’s Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes in Jordan Springs. These aspirational homes are the first builds in New South Wales for the not-for-profit organisation.

Youngcare’s Head of Housing and Development, Tim Lambert, said they build the homes to be high-quality, modern, and just like any other home a young Australian would love to live in, with those few essential extras for accessibility and increased independence.

“The Youngcare development team understands high physical support needs, and we can design a home through the lens of that understanding to make it as comfortable and practical as possible,” Tim said.

“Young Australians with high physical support needs require uniquely designed homes so they can live with as much independence as possible. Youngcare takes a best in class design approach that delivers aspirational and modern homes that suit the neighbourhood. Our locations give residents access to the essential shops, services, and social outlets that all young people want to be able to access. It helps them live equally among their community with more freedom than forms of supported living such as aged care or rehabilitation centres. We also use external support providers so that our residents can choose the care that’s right for them”.

The two homes will house six young residents with high physical support needs and are scheduled for completion in 2023. The frames are now up on both homes, external cladding and brick facades will be done shortly, and windows and doors will be fitted before internal works and roofing start in October.

The 2022 Australian National Boomerang Throwing Championships were held at Grey Gums in Cranebrook on Saturday 17th September and Sunday 18th September.

Sport boomerang throwing has been around since the 70’s, when the Boomerang Association of Australia (BAA) was founded in September 1969.

Catches consist of left hand clean, right hand clean, two hands behind the back, two hands under the leg, hackey catch, tunnel catch, one hand behind the back, one hand under the leg, eagle catch and foot catch

A team of six Australians will be heading to Delhi in India in November to compete in the first Australia versus India tournament. It is hoped this will be a yearly event.

“We are always looking for new throwers, young and old, plus families. We welcome all abilities to have a go, please contact us if you would like to know more about our sport” said Christene Metzakis, Secretary of Boomerang Association of Australia (BAA) to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Music Ears

Jordan Springs resident Irene Stone has dedicated her life to teaching music. With decades of experience, she loves nothing more than mentoring the next generation of musicians.

“At university, I initially became qualified as a language teacher. Music was always my passion. When my children, now in their late 40’s, began primary school, I volunteered as a music teacher at their school. From there, I received formal qualifications and began my career as a specialist music teacher” said Irene to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

“Since then, I have taught in schools and now teach one day a week at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music” she added.

Whilst at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Irene teaches combined primary general music lessons. In a private setting, she does one on one lessons in piano, organ, recorder, and general musicianship. She also teaches small group lessons to develop young students until they are ready for one on one sessions.

Guiding many young musicians over the years, Irene believes she has the best job in the world.

“I love music in every form, both listening and playing multiple instruments. Combine this with my love of seeing people develop, whether young or old. When you teach, there are those moments when students grasp a new concept or idea. Those moments are wonderful to be involved it and very humbling to be around. They are the moments that keep me teaching and keep me inspired” beamed Irene.

“Of course, when I’m teaching music, I’m sharing my passion. What isn’t to love about that?”

Playing her favourite instrument all depends on her mood. “When I’m around others, I love playing in ensembles with recorder and percussion. By myself, I love the piano or organ. I even dabble with the oboe to further develop my own skills”.

Irene is available to pass on her love of music to members of the local community. Visit ‘Irene’s Music Room’ on Facebook or call 0412 294240.

Scott Rutkowski is a proud local. His food reviews have been a big hit online and the number of his supporters continues to grow.

He has been a ‘foodie’ for over 20 years since he was in his late teens.

“I’m passionate about food and enjoy going out and being social. My reviews are from a non-visual perspective, as I have no vision at all and have been blind since birth. NDIS have helped through providing support workers with getting out and about. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to get out as often. The community has always been there for me. I see this as a way to give back to the community” he said.

Scott’s food reviews for Western Sydney Dining Out and About have been popular with audiences. Having already visited 30-40 local cafes and restaurants over the years, his knowledge and experience is amazing.

“I enjoy the whole experience of dining out. The atmosphere. The noise, as long as it’s not too loud. The people that you’re with. Good customer service that brings you back again. And of course, the food” Scott replied.

So, what is Scott’s favourite dish you may ask?

“That’s a hard question. If I had to choose, it would be a combination of wraps, sushi, seafood, or burgers. Although, I do have a sesame allergy” he stated.

Check out Scott’s food review in this edition. Bon appétit!

HEALTH

Chronic Back Pain - There Is A Real Solution!

Most people have lower back pain at some point in their lives. Often it disappears after mild anti-inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But sometimes it stays around.

This chronic (long lasting) form of back pain at best can be an annoying ache that’s a bit better when you warm up, but always there in the background. At worst, it can be a constant debilitating pain. Often pain radiates down into the buttock and legs (known as sciatica) or leads to strange, tingling or even loss of feeling down an affected leg, sometimes to the tips of the toes. This type of chronic back problem can stop you working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue.

There are many individual causes that can lead to chronic back pain but (in most instances) one major factor sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how it happens: Often after simple overuse or other injury, the back muscles in the affected area shorten (lock in) and literally swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells and cause the muscles and nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood and lymph flow and this locks in the cycle of inflammation. Though exercise often brings temporary relief, in some cases it may worsen the problem long-term.

In most cases the solution is quite simple. Remove the

inflammatory fluid and literally lengthen the affected back muscles so that tissue function normalises, and the spine adopts at normal position. When we do this, in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long-standing cases. The same is true for many chronic shoulder and knee complaints.

James Morrison The October Concert

On Sunday 30 October 2022, trumpet maestro James Morrison will visit Penrith for one monumental afternoon of music.

Morrison said he is excited to return to Penrith after an absence of nearly 10 years.

“I have performed in concert venues and theatres throughout the world, but this will be my very first on the edge of a lake and what better place than the Sydney International Regatta Centre,” Mr Morrison said.

Joining Morrison on stage will be his quartet including sons William on guitar, and Harry on double bass, and Patrick Danao on drums.

Together, the James Morrison Quartet have taken the international music scene by storm, performing at major festivals such as BBC Proms with superstar Dianne Reeves, Melbourne International Jazz Festival with Patti Austin, and performing at famous jazz venues including Ronnie Scott's in London.

In what he is describing as an intimate afternoon of jazz, Mr Morrison's show will comprise of classic jazz based on styles and acts such as Louis Armstrong, Bosso Nova, Stan Getz, Be-Bop and much more.

“I want everyone to enjoy the performance” he said.

“Firstly, I'm not there to educate anyone about jazz; I really love the music, and what it does and how it makes me feel and I want everyone to feel that, and we can all enjoy it together.”

When asked about what audiences can expect, Mr Morrison replied “Expect to have a good time.”

Although COVID restrictions in recent years has put a pause on touring, Mr Morrison recently returned from a tour of Europe saying it’s great to be on the road again making music.

In addition to performing, Mr Morrison spends much of his time in education conducting master classes and workshops sharing his love and knowledge for music education.

As well as performing with his quartet Morrison will join the students and staff of St Pauls Grammar and Nepean High for special performances in the early afternoon.

“The students are putting a lot of energy into preparing their pieces and I am looking forward to working with them and sharing the stage for an afternoon of fantastic entertainment.”

Teaching Boys to Respect Women

We live in an epidemic of violence against women, with one woman losing her life at the hands of a male partner or expartner every week in Australia. Violence starts with disrespect. When we excuse disrespect, it can escalate to aggression and abuse. Studies show that disrespectful attitudes take root in childhood. As parents, you can help to break this cycle.

Disrespect looks like pressuring someone to do something they don’t want to do or treating someone as though they are not as important as you. Disrespect can be based on differences between people such as gender, sexuality, skin colour, cultural heritage, age, disability, or religion.

Some things adults say unintentionally teach children that disrespect is OK in certain situations. Self-reflection is the first step. It is helpful to be aware of common excuses made for aggressive or disrespectful behaviour in boys:

• Downplaying the behaviour, e.g. “it wasn’t that bad”, “he was just joking”

• Accepting aggression as part of being a boy, e.g. “boys will be boys”

• Blaming girls for being treated with disrespect, e.g. “it takes two to tango”

Be prepared to talk to boys about respect early and often. Everyday situations are opportune moments for life-changing conversations. For example, you can discuss what an insult like, “you throw like a girl” says about boys and girls. You can also discuss examples from television or movies.

Ask questions about what your boys think and feel about disrespect and gender equality. Conversation starters might include, “do you notice any differences in how girls and boys are treated at school?” or “Have you ever heard a boy say something to a girl that you didn’t agree with?”

Support empathy by modelling this yourself. If you notice your child acting out, acknowledge their perspective AND reinforce appropriate behaviour, e.g. “I know you were frustrated, but we treat everyone with respect no matter what.” Prompt your child to understand another person’s perspective with questions like, “how would you feel if you were treated like that?”

You can create a safer future for women and girls by stopping disrespect at the start.

For more support and resources around this topic, please visit https://www.respect.gov.au/resources/talking-about-respect/ or call 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) or Men’s Line 1300 78 99 78.

After a series of unfriendly rain cycles, Ropes Crossing Public School’s boy’s football team were ecstatic to hear that the NSW PSSA Knockout Cup was still going to proceed.

Their tournament began with playing a series of relatively local opponents; Henry Fulton Public School, Glenbrook Public School, Ellison Public School, and Clairgate Public School. Each of these games were conducted with fantastic spirit from both teams and Ropes Crossing Public School managed to secure comfortable victories.

North Rocks Public School were determined to be their next opponents, and as predicted, the match was intensely contested for the total 50 minutes. A scoreless first half set the scene for a climatic finish with Ropes Crossing Public School edging out with a 3-0 win. The win took the school into the regional grand final, for a chance to represent Sydney Metro in the upcoming NSW State Cup Finals.

Their grand final opponents were King Park Public School, a school located in Sydney’s south-west. The boys put up a valiant fight against a school with a notoriously professional footballing program. The match finished 6-0 in favour of King Park and emotions were clear from Ropes Crossing, as their tournament had come to an end. The match was handled with passion and respect from both teams and a fantastic experience for the Ropes boys.

“As a teacher/coach, it has been an absolute pleasure to mentor our Ropes Crossing boys on the football field. I cherish the opportunity to coach any form of sport, but to do so with a group of students who love football as much as I do have been a genuine blessing. Our Ropes Crossing boys have shown real character to persevere this deep into this competition and should be commended for their effort and the way they conducted themselves” said Mr. Jack Magill, Ropes Crossing Public School Football Coach. The Valley JuncTion Shop 24/25 caddens corner, caddens

The experience at The Valley Junction was exceptional and the staff were very attentive and extremely helpful. They have a large menu and what impressed me was the selection of menu options. They also cater for those of us with allergies, who may have special dietary requirements.

Having read the menu before arriving at The Valley Junction, I was keen to try the Yellow Mellow Juice which consisted of orange, pineapple, and mango. This juice had a very fresh clean taste, and the flavours were exquisite. I was not aware that you can build your own juice, which is what Katie (Support Worker) did and she really enjoyed her juice also.

I wanted to try the Waffle Fries and wow, amazing. The Waffle Fries were crisp, and each were a different shape. These fries should be shared.

I chose the classic Wagyu Beef Burger for my main course. The beef burger contained Wagyu patty, cheese, cos lettuce, tomato, caramelised onion, bacon, fried egg, BBQ sauce and onion rings with chips on the side. This burger was flavourful, the cheese, bacon beef and sauce all went together, and every mouthful was different.

Katie really enjoyed the Salmon Bagel which consisted of smoked salmon, spinach leaves, ricotta cheese, Spanish onion, and caper berries.

I was tempted to try one of the iced lattes however, after having eaten most of our order, I was full.

In conclusion, The Valley Junction really cared about making customer’s feel welcome and at home. Vinnie and his staff really made the experience the best it could be, and I have no hesitation in giving The Valley Junction a ten out of ten.

I highly recommend The Valley Junction for those looking for a quiet cafe to eat at. You will not be disappointed. The atmosphere really suited the cafe, and the selection of music was enjoyable. Thanks, team, for such a wonderful experience.

A new fresh fruit and vegetable delivery business has launched in the community. Hawkesbury Picked Fruit and Veg Boxes sources local produce, delivering to the Penrith and Mount Druitt areas, with free pick up in Jordan Springs.

The business is the creation of Dimity Allchin, who started it in May this year.

“I am a stay at home mum with 2 daughters: my youngest just turning 2 and my eldest 3 and a half. We had been looking for things to get out and do together that the girls would enjoy, and I had been seeking something outside of hanging around home for the past few years with infants and COVID” explained Dimity to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

“We have also been through the struggles of getting our daughter to eat anything that’s actually nutritionally good for her and this idea just popped into my head. We first just gave it a go and it has become an adventure outing for my girls driving to the farms to help me collect the produce. They have since become addicted to their fruit and vegetables too, so one happy mum here” she continued.

Hawkesbury Picked offers a range of boxes to cater to every family size. Set box contents change slightly each week based on local harvests. Customers can also have item requests included/excluded.

The set box range comes in mixed fruit and veg and fruit only boxes. Mixed fruit and veg are Harvest Staples (single/couple), Young Harvest (young family), Family Harvest (family size) and The Whole Harvest (everything including the frills). Fruit only boxes are Small Fruit (basic fruits for a young family) and Large Fruit (plenty for school, work, and home for the whole family).

Custom boxes allow customers to choose exactly the items they want in their box from an options list with roughly 80 choices of fruit, vegetables, and eggs. You can also set up a subscription, so that you don’t have to remember to order every week.

For more information including prices and delivery areas, visit facebook.com/HawkesburyPicked. Hawkesbury

Jordan Springs Cricket Club have taken to the pitch for the 2022-23 Summer season, beginning last month. The popular local club will feature in their 4th season in the Penrith competition.

This season will see 13 Junior teams and 2 Senior teams compete for the club. The Juniors have grown by 4 teams, after fielding 9 teams last Summer. This is amazing news with the sport expanding for the younger players.

Despite the wet weather that hampered the previous competition, the club was still able to produce some highlights. This included 4 teams being crowned Premiers, which were the Under 10’s, Under 11’s and Under 13’s in the Juniors and Third Grade in the Seniors.

Four Junior teams, Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12 and Under 13’s were also treated to a tour of the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) whilst representing Jordan Springs Cricket Club earlier this year.

“After the disruptions of the last couple of seasons, we are very much looking forward to a full season ahead with good weather. The competitions look great, and we will have some strong teams that will be ready to win in all grades” said Sunil Chhabra of Jordan Springs Cricket Club.

An exciting addition to the club’s cricket calendar this year will be the tennis ball tournament, slated for November. The intraclub competition will be played on Friday and Saturday nights under lights. The use of a softer ball will see no safety gear needed and more players participating. Information will be available on social media later in the year.

“We have some awesome plans ahead for the season. Watch this space” Sunil smiled.

They are still looking for new players for the 2022-23 Summer season. Local businesses wanting to sponsor the club are also welcome.

The Probus organisation has a club in your local area, providing an exciting opportunity to meet with fellow retirees and join in stimulating activities. The club was formed in March 2018, to service Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and joins the fray with over 1,700 clubs with more than 125,000 members all over Australia and New Zealand.

Recently, local lunches included Peachtree Hotel and Tattersalls Tavern. Upcoming lunches include Penrith and Leonay Golf Clubs and Lapstone Hotel. Future outings include Taronga Zoo, train trip to Lithgow and a mystery train trip for the day to somewhere reported to be very interesting, where we will be able to have another group lunch. Later in the year, we have Johnny Pace entertaining us with his stories of his life in the public eye along with other very interesting presentations at our meeting each month. Next year, we are hoping to spread our wings and travel to Tasmania as a group for 10 days of fun and sightseeing.

Apart from attending monthly meetings and getting to know fellow members with a cuppa and biscuit, you will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of pursuits, travel locally or around the world, enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme, have access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active.

The club currently has a regular lunch at a local venue on the second Tuesday of each month, a monthly outing, and special events such as our Christmas lunch with entertainment, hopefully from Ron Ashton. An example of the outings planned for this year are the Postman’s Run on the Hawkesbury River, movie group, car trip to Wollongong, outing to the new Sydney Zoo, lunch on the Hawkesbury Paddler Steamer and many more events. We are always adding new and varied outings.

The Probus Club of Jordan Springs welcomes visitors and new members and meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 10:00am. For more information, contact Bob on 0405 813159 or via email at jordanspringsprobus@gmail.com. Visit our website at probussouthpacific.org/microsites/jordansprings.

Who in the late 1800’s would have thought that a man would walk on the moon or that in 2015 after ten years of travel, a space camera would meet Pluto at the ‘end’ of space as we currently perceive it?

From the horse and buggy day to life today, the young student looking to the future is challenged with exciting careers in science and business. Yet for all this the social problems remain war, poverty, thieving, violence are still part and parcel of life. Why? Maybe because sin, that often-maligned word, is still master in many situations. Sin is that which depreciates life, humans working against the common good.

There is a beautiful statement in the Anglican book of Common Prayer which prays “God desires not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn and live”. A powerful statement when conscience is not dumbed down by the refusal to consider. Conscience has a major factor: the ‘moral sense’ where the rule of right conduct is the dominating factor. Directed to the person, it is where change can occur for better or for worse. Often conscience is spoken of as having a ‘voice’ that dictates the sense of responsibility and obligation. But conscience has a strong negative side where it can be exhausted and stifled by habits of sin. These work towards a total depreciation of life on the part of the individual who fails to reflect “turn that you may live”.

Yet again, what about disease and events of nature that cause so much agony and pain? Was it not Job so many centuries ago, who cursed God because he did not understand the realities of life in which he found himself? But Job found that Faith is the utility that provides meaning to the reality of life.

This is a true story about three Jewish psychiatrists studying, “What is the fundamental drive which makes us tick as people?”

The first man, Sigmund Freud, argued the pursuit of PLEASURE is our most basic human drive, which gives purpose and meaning to life. His fellow psychiatrist Alfred Adler disagreed. He believed every person is born feeling weak and inferior, and so is motivated by a desire for POWER, importance, and by gaining control. The third man, Victor Frankl, was still only a student when WWII started.

Freud and Adler as world renown scholars were able to escape, however, Frankl, being Jewish, was arrested and thrown into a Nazi concentration camp. There he noticed something strange. Those who survived were not always the ones you’d expect. Many who were physically strong, wasted away and died; whilst others who were physically weaker grew stronger and survived. And so, Frankl began to wonder: What enabled them to survive where others had perished? He concluded that Freud and Adler were wrong. It wasn’t a pursuit of pleasure which explained the survival of these people, as they had only known pain and suffering and degradation. Neither was it the pursuit of power, as every day, they were routinely beaten at gunpoint, treated like animals, and rendered absolutely powerless

And so, Victor Frankl came up with his own theory: The fundamental difference between those who survived and those who perished was HOPE. Those who survived were those who never gave up the hope and the belief that their lives had meaning, and that despite everything else going on around them, it would one day end and they would live meaningful, purposeful lives. Not POWER, not PLEASURE, but HOPE and the belief that their lives had meaning this is what had driven them. Who or what is the hope that drives you?

National 14th October 2022 National Veterinary Nurse’s Day.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as veterinarians.

We will be celebrating by having a long lunch on the day, which is hard to do in a busy veterinary hospital.

We have 24 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Kitten Adoption. Adopt a Friend for Life!

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

We have 2 lovely kittens ready for adoption now!

The kittens are 21 weeks old. They are both males. One white and one ginger tabby.

They have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together.

Both kittens have a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms

and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months.

Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given.

If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit.

Undeniably, the past month has been a difficult one for many.

Tragically, for the families and friends of the five youths whose lives were cut short in a single vehicle crash at Buxton; where nearby communities rallied together in a show of support and strength as those families and friends faced the unimaginable.

And historically, the entire world mourned the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen. Aged 96 she was the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Serving the Commonwealth for over 70 years was just as amazing as the life she led. Thank you, Queen Elizabeth II for all that you did. It is hard to imagine a world without her.
