Diwali, Festival of Lights, Shines at Jordan Springs The Jordan Springs community celebrated the Indian festival of Diwali last month, enjoying traditional dancing and music, food and other cultural activities at the Jordan Springs Town Centre.

Arthur Ilias, Lendlease Communities General Manager NSW/ACT, said the Diwali event was designed to celebrate diversity within the Jordan Springs community.

“Over the course of the day, around 500 people visited Jordan Springs to enjoy the flavours and festivities of Diwali, including many of our new Jordan Springs East residents,” said Mr Ilias.

Celebrated annually at Jordan Springs, the cultural event was embraced by residents and visitors alike with one resident Natalia saying that her family loved the experience, colour and music.

“The kids tried henna painting, and it was great to see the crowd dress up in national costume,” said Natalia.

Bhativia, a purchaser currently residing in Wentworthville, said the family was really excited about moving to Jordan Springs East and wanted to meet some new friends.

“Our daughter had a wonderful time dancing and getting dressed up,” said Bhativia.

Lendlease is committed to supporting a range of cultural and community groups at Jordan Springs. Local Jordan Springs small business, Diamonds Hair and Beauty, have been named the Outstanding Hairdresser, after winning the award at the 2017 Penrith City Local Business Awards recently.

“It was amazing to have our business recognised as a winner of the small business awards as the most outstanding hairdressing salon” said Deanne Byrne, Business Partner of Diamonds Hair and Beauty.

Movies Under the Stars Llandilo Public School presents Movies Under the Stars, with a special outdoor screening of ‘Zootopia’, taking place on Friday 17th of November at the school.

On November 1st each year a service is dedicated to “All Saints”. In the Scriptures a saint is a person who has been baptized and believes in Jesus the Christ. From the time of the Resurrection of Jesus the title ‘saint’ was gradually delegated to recognize a person who was considered exemplary in the Christian way of life. Today the Roman Catholic Church for instance, delegates the title to persons in the process known as canonization.

All Saints Day has an interesting history: around 200CE, St Gregory who lived in Pontus (in what was known as Asia Minor), observed a festival known as All Martyrs. St. Chrysostom [who died in 407CE] refers also to this festival. The Greek Orthodox Church today still observes on the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost which celebrates the granting of God’s Spirit to the early followers of Christ and is considered to be the ‘birthday’ of the Church, a Sunday for All Saints.

In the latter part of the 8th century, All Saints Day was held in Churches throughout England and also in Ireland, France and Germany. Some historians hold that the festival originated in Ireland and that it spread to England and finally to other countries. Pope Gregory 4th encouraged Louis, the then Emperor of what was known as the Holy Roman Empire, to set November 1st for the festival. It was agreed to in 835CE and continues to this day.

In Scripture the word is not directly used in relation to personal character (although today people will refer to someone as ‘being a saint’) or to any special group or class of

Christians. In the Anglican Prayer Book the Collect [a prayer that summaries belief] was composed in 1549 and it is characterized by the fact that it expresses belief in the total concept of the Church: the visible i.e the living and the invisible i.e the dead.

The basic theme is based on the teaching of St. Paul with his conception of the Church being the Body of Christ. In the Prayer Book ‘mystical body of the Son’ it is used three times while in the Communion Service it is defined as ‘the blessed company of all faithful people’.

The Collect is one that can be used every day in prayer ”We praise you heavenly Father that you have knit together your elect into one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord. Give us grace to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Step Up! for Down Syndrome

Jordan Springs residents, Margaret and John Drew, have recently participated in Step Up! for Down syndrome 2017 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in honour of their 7-year-old great-niece, Isla Coburn.

Step Up! for Down syndrome is Australia’s largest annual Down syndrome community event, held in October, which is Down syndrome awareness month. They bring folks together for raising both funds and awareness, as well as celebrating the

achievements of 13,000+ people in Australia who are living with Down syndrome.

This is the sixth year in a row that the Drews have been involved. In previous years, the walks were over the Harbour Bridge and around Parramatta Park, while this is the second year at the Regatta Centre.

“It was a successful day” said Margaret, “they reached their target”. So far, Isla’s team ‘Isla Lila’, is the second highest team earner in NSW at $2,551 and her friend Flynn’s team ‘Flynn’s Flyers’ is number one with $4,355. NSW totals come in at $22,240 with a whopping $118,340 raised across the country.

Flynn’s mum, Hannah Edwards, along with his auntie, Tanya Croft, organised Step Up Penrith and this year’s funds are for establishing a local social group called Up Junior Club. Hannah said that the aim is to “allow our children the opportunity to access their community with their peers, as well as to develop friendships with others with Down syndrome. It also aims to provide a space for families to connect, and receive support from each other”.

Isla’s father, Josh Coburn, said “We have made it our personal mission to advocate for Isla and her peers, to spread awareness about the positive impacts of living with Down syndrome, to break the ceiling on misguided preconceptions and out of date information. We strongly believe that Isla has the right to inclusion and acceptance just as any other child would”.

When Should A Child Learn To Swim?

Last summer was terrible in terms of drownings, one of the worst on record, and as a consequence many parents I have spoken to want to get their children swimming as soon as possible. But when should a child start swimming lessons?

Swim Australia and the Australian Swim Schools Association recommend starting lessons from 6 months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this at home.

Babies are not born with a fear of the water - fear and anxiety around water is acquired - as children develop independence and imagination some children will develop a fear of swimming or going under water. Make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head from birth. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with much less fear than an older child, allowing them to develop early water safety and awareness skills In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity. In addition, a four-year project led by Griffith University has concluded that children who swim show more advanced physical and cognitive skills than those who don't, including better visual-motor abilities, (such as drawing lines and colouring in shapes), and excelling in following instructions, language, counting and solving mathematical problems.

Please remember though that learning to swim is just one of the many layers of swim safety needed, a child who can swim is still not drown proof. Fence the pool, shut the gate, learn CPR and most importantly, constantly supervise and have babies and toddlers within arms reach at all times. Image Supplied

Traffic Update Work to improve the intersection of Andromeda Drive and The Northern Road at Cranebrook is progressing well with the next stage of work now being carried out.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW and Australian governments are funding this project to improve the intersection which has been identified as a local blackspot.

“The Northern Road is a major north-south connector through Penrith and the intersection with Andromeda Drive provides access to residential areas and schools in Cranebrook,” the spokesperson said.

“Crews started improvement work at this intersection in June this year to install new traffic lights and widen the southbound lane on The Northern Road heading towards Penrith to provide motorists with safer turning opportunities into and out of the residential area.

“The improvements also include building new footpaths and pram ramps, removing and replacing asphalt, relocating utilities and improving drainage at the intersection.

“Work has already been carried out to install a stormwater drain, build kerb and gutters as well as remove some vegetation.”

The spokesperson said work will continue to be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays until Friday 22 December, weather permitting.

Night work will also take place between 8pm and 5am, excluding Saturdays.

“This project is being carried out to ensure the community can safely access this key intersection and these improvements will aim to reduce the number and severity of crashes at this intersection,” the spokesperson said.

“Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of noise on residents and businesses.”

Traffic control and lane closures will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of all signs and traffic control.

PARENTS CORNER

Getting Results It’s natural to want your child to do well at school and some parents use a reward such as money to encourage their children to get better grades. I’ve often heard of parents offering their child money for every “A” on their end of term report card.

One of the problems with giving children financial incentives for good end-of-term grades is that the reward comes too long after the effort is made.

Rather than waiting till the end of term, it’s much more effective to set up a system of rewards which are brief and frequent and which encourage positive daily habits. These daily habits then build towards an eventual outcome, such as a good homework and study routine.

However, you can encourage children to build good study and homework habits without having to resort to offering money.

Why not try a reward such as spending time with your child doing an activity they really like? Or you could offer a special treat you know they’ll enjoy. The object is to encourage good routines by giving extra attention and praise or small frequent rewards when they are doing the right thing.

When kids are struggling, that little bit of extra attention can encourage them into new patterns of behaviour – and they may end up getting that A after all!

Carruthers Competes in the Stonecutters Ridge Junior Classic

Fifty-six highly-talented junior golfers from the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation teed off at the Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club recently, in the ‘Stonecutters Ridge Junior Classic’.

Leonay Golf Club had four players in the strong field, headed

by Coby Carruthers (Jordan Springs), Ben Crilley, Zachary Lange and the overall winner Eric Summers.

Fourteen-year old Summers was simply unbeatable on the day, scorching around the demanding Quakers Hill layout with a stroke round of 77, just 5 shots over par.

Carruthers was the next best of the Leonay quartet, finishing in 21st spot with a nett score of 74, whilst Crilley was 27th with a nett score of 79.

Players in the Junior Classic were aged between 8 and 18, with an astonishing thirty-one of those players on single figure handicaps.

An Alternative Setting for Education Home schooling is becoming an increasingly popular educational option in Australia.

Under the Education Act 1990, home schooling is education delivered in a child’s home by a parent or guardian. Currently over four thousand children are being home schooled in New South Wales alone with approximately a third of those students living in Western Sydney.

There are numerous reasons why parents are choosing this alternate setting as the preferred method for their child’s education. According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), the top reason for electing to home school is due to philosophical reasons. Additional reasons cited include special learning needs, behavioural, religious, bullying and other nonspecified.

Regardless of the reasons why parents choose to home school their child, families in this state are required to register with NESA, develop a learning program based on the curriculum and monitor their children’s progress. There are many organisations and support networks available for families who home school; parents are encouraged to connect with other home schooling parents to share ideas and resources, support one another and provide opportunities for children to socialise.

Another interesting alternative to regular home schooling that is getting a lot of media attention currently is the concept of ‘unschooling’. This somewhat radical approach operates

under the premise of children learning through every day experiences and learning naturally without the conformities of the curriculum. This model of education does not currently meet registration requirements in NSW. If you are considering home schooling your children it is important to consider the positive and negative aspects in order to make an informed decision. As the teacher you will need to be patient, prepared to deal with the possible misbehaviour of your children whilst encouraging them to learn. Conversely, you will get to spend extra time with your children, have a more flexible lifestyle and be able to cater for their individual needs. Home schooling can be very stressful, but it is also very rewarding. This option is not for every family. Man Airlifted from Llandilo A 70-year-old man was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition after falling through a roof in Llandilo last month.

It’s understood the man fell through the ceiling about three metres onto the concrete floor of the home garage.

CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked to help shortly before noon, landing in a paddock near the scene.

Police conveyed CareFlight’s medical crew the short distance to the patient. Ambulance paramedics were also on scene.

CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic treated the man for multiple injuries.

He was transferred to the helicopter and flown to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition. Article: www.careflight.org

She credits her longevity to yoga and a healthy lifestyle. She started taking yoga in 1959 when she was 20 years old. She described how, in those days, there wasn’t much of it around. “In the 60’s, I had great difficulty even finding a book on yoga” explained Judy.

During that time, she was suffering from bad migraines and felt that the yoga helped. “It didn’t make them go away, but it gave me the ability to cope with the migraines and with many other things in life”.

Skip forward to today and Judy, a qualified yoga teacher, has been teaching yoga for 54 years and is still going strong. Up until five years ago she ran a beauty therapy business as well, providing healing, deep relaxation and massage.

Some of her popular yoga classes are Groovy Grannies and Seniors (+50’s). She also offers meditation, stress management, colour analysis and is a certified Laughter Yoga Leader.

Laughter yoga was developed in Mumbai, India in 1995. It’s an aerobic activity that takes fake laughter and transforms it into real laughter. The benefits are vast: reduces stress and tension, releases endorphins, burns calories, stabilises blood sugar, strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure and builds resilience against daily stresses.

Judy holds regular classes in Glenmore Park, North Penrith and Cranebrook and special events including an upcoming ‘Relaxation Evening’ on Friday 10th November. This workshop will provide some tools on ‘how to incorporate relaxation into everyday life’, using breath control and mindfulness. Her motto is: ‘When stress goes, relaxation flows’.

WHAT’S COOKING

Christmas Rice Salad

ingredients 1 1/2 cups rice blend 2 1/4 cups apple juice 1 cup dried cranberries 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 large red apple 1 lemon, juiced 150g baby spinach 3/4 cup flaked almonds, toasted 100g Danish fetta, crumbled Honey Mustard Vinaigrette 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 1/2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 small garlic cloves, crushed preparation 1. Place rice in a sieve. Rinse under cold water until water runs clear. Place rice, apple juice, 1 cup cold water and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Cover.

Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 30 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and rice is cooked through. Remove from heat. Set aside for 10 minutes.

Transfer rice to a bowl. Cool.

2. Meanwhile, place cranberries and boiling water in a heatproof bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes or until cranberries are plump. Drain well. Add to rice.

3. Make Honey Mustard Vinaigrette. Place oil, mustards, honey, lemon juice and garlic in a screw-top jar. Season with salt and pepper. Secure lid. Shake well to combine.

Taste and add a little extra honey or lemon juice, if needed.

4. Core apple. Cut into 1cm cubes. Toss with lemon juice to coat.

5. Add spinach, apple and ¾ of the almonds to the rice. Toss gently to combine. Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with fetta and remaining almonds. Serve with vinaigrette, on the side.

My beautiful coach helped me reach my goal, and saw in me the potential to be a great coach.

Local electrical business, DAGS Electrical, pride themselves on serving the community the best they can through their experience, since starting in 2000, right through to their exceptional customer service and personal touch.

Owner Rick Jenkins, started the business doing antennas, before branching out into AV gear and mounting televisions. In 2012, he obtained his electrical licence, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Renewable Energies. Last year, the local business also obtained their split system air conditioning licence, allowing them to install air conditioners.

Rick is joined by apprentice Jackson, who brings local knowledge to the team. DAGS Electrical also have an AV team of two and a further four contractors for their bigger jobs.

“Our point of difference is our personal service. Most of our customers we have had for many years. Personally, I remember the people and their homes when I attend jobs. Our level of experience means that once our customers have got DAGS, they tend to have other things that we can help them with too” explained Rick.

“Our goals are to just keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t want to grow massively and forget our customers. We want to continue looking after our existing customers, get new customers and to have a good stable business.

Having a fairly small number of customers that are looked after really well is very important to us” added Rick.

In this age of digital discovery and electronic everything, we might be wondering what the future holds for the printed word.

Will books, magazines and newspapers become obsolete giving way to their illuminated offspring?

Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months.

Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must also be given.

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

We have 2 lovely kittens ready for adoption now!

The kittens are 3 months old. There is 1 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 black and white male.

They have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together.
