FROM THE EDITOR Here we are, our last publication for 2015.

Someone once told me, that as we get older, each year passes by faster.

The reasoning said to be behind this is mathematically based , in that the older you become, each year represents a smaller and smaller portion of your life.

When you are ONE, a year is your whole life , whilst when you are 40, one year is only a small fraction of your life (1/40th) and each year seems to pass faster.

An interesting, possibly useless fact!

We have plenty more interesting stories to read in this month's edition!

There are plenty of New Developments in and around the area, not to mention New Businesses and New Community Groups.

Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones and those near and dear.

Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same.

The month of December commences the Christian year and it is known as the season of Advent.

The worship and prayers during this season are directed to two major themes: the birth of Jesus, who later was to be recognized as the Messiah and the future culmination of all life and the universe in the Judgement of the Creator. Solid thoughts but once encountered provide not only for the individual but also society as a whole a powerful and invigorating life.

The birth of Jesus challenges the question ‘Who do you think I am’ given by Jesus to his early followers. In relation to the long history and the incomprehensible universe that we continually strive to comprehend, the birth of Jesus is late within the known time frame. However to the Christian it becomes the reality that the Creator is made known in the man Jesus. Just as the early followers came to realise that in Jesus there is more than just ‘man’ so today we worship the Holy Trinity: God in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

On Christmas Eve at St David’s a traditional service of Carols and readings from Scripture is held prior to the Midnight Service for Holy Communion [the Christ Mass] that outline the long history from Abraham to the birth of Christ giving abundant premise for contemplation and consideration all directed to being able to say that Jesus is Emmanuel (God with us).

Modern astronomers argue that eventually the universe as we know it will come to an end. The argument is that the universe

will either implode or explode. Non- the- less they argue it will end. To the Christian, this is not alarmist because the Faith holds that in the end all things will be summed up in Christ. The universe is moving to that wonderful reality that what has been created will be renewed and heaven will become a reality.

More Parking to Help Christmas Business

The lead up to Christmas is a lift for the local economy and shoppers too with Penrith Council boosting the number of temporary parking spaces around Penrith’s City Centre for the busy Christmas period.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said Council will provide about 200 extra parking spaces within easy reach of Penrith shops from now until early January.

“Council is keen to make life easier for shoppers, business and workers by providing extra car parks before and after Christmas.

This year, temporary parking is being extended to cater for the extra shoppers drawn to Penrith by summer sales,” Councillor McKeown said.

“The additional parking is all day parking and will take pressure off existing car spaces to meet the needs of the many people using our CBD. People driving to and from work will also benefit from the additional all day parking spaces close to the CBD. The temporary parking areas are located at: • Woodriff Gardens Tennis complex, about 90 spaces • Judges Place, Penrith CBD, an extra 55 spaces • Council’s Civic Centre car park, about 45 spaces.

What Have I Been Talking With Parents About This Past Month?

A lot of parents have been very interested to know how they can determine whether the consequences they are giving their child’s mistaken behaviour are fair and reasonable, and designed to address the behaviour.

First of all, consequences need to be related to the mistaken behaviour. Sometimes this can be tricky. But if the child has been jumping on the lounge, then taking away the soccer game on Saturday doesn’t make sense. The consequence is not related to the behaviour. A more appropriate consequence is allowing the child to sit on the floor for a little while.

I use a checklist…

• Is it positive?

• Am I guiding and educating my child?

• Am I teaching my child new skills and behaviours?

• Will it maintain our relationship?

I will give you a few scenarios, to see how this works.

Scenario 1 A mother told me once how her parent would rip up her homework if she made one mistake. She would then have to do the homework all over again.

What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this meet?

Scenario 2 A mother told me how her young child was fussing at the dinner table. The mother calmly put the child’s plate to the side, and calmly told her child that she would return the dinner when the child could sit and be calm. The child was able to settle herself quickly and the mother returned the dinner saying “thank you for sitting so calmly, you are able to eat your dinner better when you sit still”.

What do you think? Which of the above criteria does this consequence meet?

International Ironman Event Secured For Western Sydney

The NSW Government has secured another major sporting event for Western Sydney with the 2017 Ironman 70.3 AsiaPacific Championships to be held in Penrith.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres made the announcement at the event location, Penrith’s International Regatta Centre, which is set to attract triathletes from around Australia and the Asia Pacific region to Western Sydney.

“The NSW Government is committed to bringing a diverse range of events to Western Sydney,” Mr Ayres said.

“The Sydney International Regatta Centre hosted the Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney in November last year, which attracted close to 1,300 visitors from interstate and overseas to the region, with a total visitor spend of more than $1.7 million.

“The elevation of this event to be the Asia Pacific Championships in 2017 is expected to attract more international participants and increase the profile of Western Sydney in the Asia Pacific region.”

The Ironman 70.3 is a triathlon race comprising of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run covering a total of 113km – or 70.3 miles.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said Western Sydney is a thriving events destination that offers visitors the opportunity to explore more of what’s on offer in both Sydney and Regional NSW. “We have a stellar line-up of sporting events in Western Sydney, from the upcoming 2015 Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney, V8 Supercars Sydney 500 and AUS-X Open Supercross to events next year such as the Sydney International Rowing Regatta, Motorworld Sydney, Bledisloe Cup and the NRL Grand Final,” Ms Chipchase said. Ironman event coming to Western Sydney. My answer is always the same - swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children, it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives. Additionally, teaching children to swim from a young age promotes good health and fitness habits, and benefits in other areas of their lives, instilling confidence and providing an environment for healthy competition with peers. A recent study by Griffith University found that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, giving them a significant advantage when starting school.

Researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said ‘The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions’.

I am also asked ‘How long will it take for my child to Learn To Swim?’ Unfortunately, it is not a question I can answer simply, as every child is different, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process.

Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons

should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years. Regular lessons all year round allow your child to practise the swimming skills appropriate to their developmental stage and learn at their own pace.

Not seeing much progress this month? As with any skill, it is normal for the child to go through periods of plateau, regression and developmental leaps throughout the process of learning to swim, but over time constant progress is being made.

We usually say (as general guide) that your child has become a capable swimmer when they are able to swim 400 metres with good technique, without stopping, and without becoming exhausted. This level of skill may take children individual amounts of time to reach, but it establishes a strong swimming foundation. These swimming skills should then be retained in children over 7 years off age, whereas younger children need consistent reinforcement to maintain their competency.

So think outside the (gift) box and give the gift of swimming lessons this Christmas!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL?

As another school year comes to an end, it is important that we reflect on and celebrate the many achievements at Henry Fulton PS this year. The students and staff have had a wonderful year together and I congratulate them all.

The Henry Fulton Follies, our biennial school performance, was greatly enjoyed by our school community with the theme this year being Christmas. The students danced and sang a variety of Christmas songs and greatly entertained our audiences at our two concerts. Thank you to the teachers as well for all the effort and creativity you displayed in preparing our students for the Follies. What a wonderful way to end the year!

Our Student Leadership Team held a Pyjama Day at the end of Term 3 to raise money to purchase pyjamas for Stewart House.

Four of the students and I headed to Penrith K-Mart to buy lots of pairs of pyjamas which were delivered to Stewart House by our leadership team. Thank you to Penrith K-Mart for your support in enabling our community to buy pyjamas at a discounted price and providing some gift cards. This has been a very worthwhile and humbling experience for our students in learning about supporting other children in need.

Many Year 3 and 4 students as well as our School Captains, attended the K-Mart Wishing Tree launch for Mission Australia.

The Year 3 and 4 students performed a Christmas item for the audience with the Captains in attendance to represent all the Henry Fulton PS students.

Our Year 6 students have been busy preparing for the Fun Fair and their Farewell. On behalf of all the staff, students and community, I would like to wish them all the best for their future and hope that they always strive to do their best.

Laura Watson is a busy local woman who has accomplished a lot in life and is now following her dreams to help women of her local community do the same.

“I want to give to back to the women of our community. I want women to start looking after themselves more, to be determined and happy inside and out. You cannot be there to look after others and your family if you are not looking after yourself.”

Laura has teamed up with another local busy mum, Jordan Springs resident Chloe Jones. “I told Chloe of my plans and she was more than happy to join me. We have had such great feedback in the small time we have been up and running, women are happy that there is a safe place for them to go, to relax, de-stress, learn new things and meet other women in the same situations. We have created this group to help women understand they are not alone in life, we all have walked different paths but we are all built the same and we need to look after number one, ourselves” So far the J.S WCG meet up on the 1st Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at the Jordan Springs Community Centre. Its free for all women of any age and any status! They are also recently hosted the White Ribbon Walk that took place at the Jordan Springs lake last month.

Christmas Already? Surviving the Holidays Christmas is difficult after the death of a loved one. You’ll be seeing family and friends that you haven’t seen since your loved one died.

Which brings the awkward questions that you don’t want to answer.

It’s important you plan what you want to do for Christmas in order to minimize stress and the likelihood that you’ll be caught off guard.

Making Your Plan Work 1. Gather your support network – First make a list of who you want to support you during this time. Next, gather them together to discuss all worries, anxieties and fears, open the lines of communication. Let everyone know how they can support you during this time. Remember to include children, they need to feel heard and to express their feelings 2. Decide on tradition – You may have traditions or rituals that you do every year. List them and brainstorm ways on making it easier for everyone. You might like to change traditions, make new ones or skip them until next year.

You might also include your loved one in some way.

3. Roles and Responsibilities – Your loved one may have been the one who cooked, bought presents, wrapped them, organised celebrations, so, those shoes need to be filled. Discuss who will do these things and how they will be supported.

4. Include children – Let kids know that they can be sad, happy and excited.

They don’t have to feel guilty about having fun.

5. Self-Care – Plan what you will do if things get tough, like calling a friend, going for a walk or writing in a journal.

Christmas is about family and if part of your family isn’t there, the celebration is changed forever. I hope you find a way to celebrate without them.

Doing the right thing with your old mobile phones, CDs, DVDs, blown light globes and household batteries is now easier than ever. Penrith Council has introduced ‘Tech Waste Collection’ stations to mark National Recycling Week.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, a Sustainability Champion, said the ‘Tech Waste Collection’ stations will make it more convenient to responsibly dispose of the items.

“The stations are located at Penrith, St Marys and St Clair libraries as well as St Clair Leisure Centre,” Cr McKeown said.

“Penrith residents are great recyclers and huge numbers of people participate in the biannual electronic waste drop off and annual household chemical drop off days.”

ECOACTIV collects and recycles the items locally using stateof-the-art processes and facilities. This project is a NSW EPA ‘Waste Less, Recycle More’ initiative funded from the waste levy.

Preheat oven to 180°C. Defrost turkey in the fridge overnight. Place in a large roasting pan with the foil on and roast for one hour 15 minutes. Remove the foil.

Combine orange juice and oil together and use to baste the turkey breast. Return to the oven and roast for a further 30 minutes.

Slice the turkey, garnish with rosemary and serve with gravy.

16 Chocolate Biscuits 1.25 Litres Vanilla Ice-Cream, Softened 1 Cup Vanilla Custard 1 Cup Mini Marshmallows 1/4 Cup Desiccated Coconut 1/4 Cup Granulated Nuts 1 Cup Frozen Raspberries, Roughly Crushed Chocolate Ice Magic, Sprinkles + Silver Cachous, to Decorate Vanilla Custard, to Serve

Line an 8 cup-capacity metal pudding steamer with plastic wrap, allowing a 2cm overhang.

Break 10 biscuits into 2cm pieces. Combine ice-cream, biscuit pieces, custard, marshmallows, coconut, nuts and raspberries in a bowl. Spoon mixture into prepared steamer. Smooth top. Top with remaining biscuits. Freeze overnight or until firm.

Stand pudding at room temperature for 5 minutes to soften. Turn out onto a plate. Carefully peel away wrap. Drizzle with Ice Magic.

Top with sprinkles and cachous. Serve with custard.

Jennie Smith BVSc (Hons 2) Jennie grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney where she first decided she would become a Veterinarian at the age of five.

She spent two years studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney before entering the Veterinary Science degree which she completed in 2000. Early in her career Jennie spent time working in the north of England and in Wales. She was also able to pursue her interest in wildlife by volunteering at the Veterinary Quarantine Centre at Taronga Zoo for two

years. Since this time Jennie has worked at various small animal hospitals in western Sydney.

Jennie is passionate about improving the welfare of animals and making a difference to all her patients. She feels all her patients are equally important and strives to make a difference through both prevention and treatment.

Jennie is currently working part time as she has two young children, two dogs and a crazy feline who keep her busy the rest of the week.

Jill the Puppy Preschool Trainer is Retiring Jill has been training puppies and adolescent dogs at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for the last 13-14 years. Jill is retiring to travel around Australia.

Rachel and Lizzie, our veterinary nurses, will be taking over from Jill. They have been trained by Jill for the last month and are undertaking the Delta Dog Training program.

We wish Jill all the best on her travels. We hope that Rachel and Lizzie can have a long and rewarding career in dog training like Jill has done.
