Building Communities: Playgroup NSW Expands Services in Ropes Crossing

In a bustling community like Ropes Crossing, nurturing connections and fostering early childhood development are paramount. Playgroup NSW is at the forefront of this effort, offering a vibrant hub for families to grow together, learn and create lasting memories. Fiona Eyres from Playgroup NSW, shared insights into the group’s initiatives and future plans.

“Playgroups offer children opportunities for social interaction, play and skillbuilding which are all crucial for their development,” said Fiona. “Playgroup also provides a place where parents and carers can come together to support one another, to form friendships and to build a sense of community.”

The PlayStrong Playgroup is located at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. It offers a range of activities designed to support children too young for a school setting and will focus on educational engagement, empowerment for parents in facilitating early education at home, and providing connections to local early childhood providers.

“Being a parent is a very exciting time, but parenting can also be very isolating,” said Fiona. “There are many families who have moved to the area and are looking to make new friends, and having something like this that is relaxed and approachable is a great start.”

The group is run by two experienced early childhood educators who set out a program designed in line with the Early Years Learning Framework and are there to facilitate and support the needs of families.

Thanks to FLAG funding through the Department of Social Services (Children and Parenting Support - Helping Families Learn and Grow with Playgroups) , there will be a range of new Playgroups starting to help support families. The first is the brand new Baby Playgroup, commencing on Wednesday, March 20th, from 10am to 12pm at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub. To attend with playgroup or learn more about Playgroup NSW, visit their website at www.playgroupnsw.org.au. Additionally, families can sign up for the Baby Playgroup via Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/build-your-village-with-playgroupnsw-tickets-851179379437.

“There’s that age old saying that it takes a village to raise a child. At Playgroup NSW, we offer parents, grandparents, and other caregivers an accessible way to help them build their village through Playgroups!” said Fiona. “Everyone is welcome!”

Cost of Living Crisis: Help to Find Help

The Burning Cost Of Living

In Western Sydney, the cost-of-living crisis is all too real. Families are increasingly reaching out to services for support. So here are some ways can you get support and some saving tips.

School Fees

Across public and private schools, parents are being asked to contribute more money. But what happens when you can’t pay the fees? In the first instance, approach the school directly. Private schools may be able to offer a payment plan, scholarships, sibling discounts and special circumstances reduction of fees.

Public school fees are not compulsory, however subject fees and excursions can often add up. No child will be excluded for a parent’s inability to pay fees.

Breakfast Clubs

Most schools have a breakfast club. Not only are they free, but children can socialise and get a healthy breakfast to start the day. If your school doesn’t have a club, look to your local community or neighbourhood centre. Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Centre runs a Brekky Club, Monday to Friday from 7.30- 8.45 am during the school term at 17 Hosking St Cranebrook.

Grocery Shopping

Look for specials either online, on apps or using the catalogues. Try to buy the fruit and vegetables that are in season and if possible, go to the markets, farms or consider joining a food coop. Check social media for businesses that sell imperfect fruit and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste.

Consider joining budget cooking groups on social media as this can help stretch your budget further.

Food Bank also has a list of community pantries and food donation organisations, and you can search by suburb. For more information about them, go to www.foodbank.org.au

Utility Bills

If you are experiencing bill stress, try contacting your provider directly and they may be able to arrange a payment plan or bill extension. Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) helps people who are struggling to pay their electricity or gas bill because of a short-term financial hardship, crisis, or emergency. For more information www.service.new.gov.au/transaction/ energy-accounts-payment-assistance-eapa-scheme

Service NSW

Service NSW has a comprehensive list of savings that can help with the cost of living. There is a range of savings and concessions that can found on their website, www.service.nsw. gov.au/services/concessions-rebates-and-assistance

Financial Counselling

Financial counselling is a free service, available through several organisations. Financial counsellors consolidate and manage debt and control your finances. Call The National Debt Hotline or visit their website www.ndh.org.au

sporting hotshots let loose.

Each year, the party is fire. This year, it's literal.

By 7:00am the following morning, the Riva house is up in flames. The question is, how did this year's party go so wrong?

Malibu Rising is a historical family saga that explores Mick and June Riva's courtship and the scrappy childhood of their children: Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit. (TJR fans will notice that one of Mick Riva's many marriages was to Evelyn Hugo, one of Reid’s most adored protagonists).

Nina is a surfer and swimsuit model trying to hold her life together. Her tennis champion husband has run off with Carrie Soto (the subject of another acclaimed Reid novel), and Nina’s dreading the party knowing everyone has ogled her broken marriage in the tabloids.

Jay is an accomplished surfer, and Hud, a skilled surf photographer. They are the closest of half-brothers in every way - including Hud falling in love with Jay's ex-girlfriend. She'll be at the party, and tonight’s the night they plan to confess their illicit relationship to Jay…

Kit is a talented surfer who has never kissed a boy. Tonight, she plans to change that and feel grown up at last. Little does she know a simple snog will change her life.

Kit hasn't told her siblings that each year she mails an invitation to their father. Mick walked out on June twice and never paid child support, forcing Nina to drop out of school to support her siblings. Mick decides this will be the year he reconciles with his children, but little does he realise how much some of his children despise him.

The stage is set. The die is cast. Sit back and enjoy the drama.

The new netball season begins on Saturday 4th May 2024, with games being played at Jamison Park in Penrith and concludes on Saturday 21st September 2024.

This year will see 22 teams representing Jordan Springs in the local competition. This will consist of 18 Junior teams (Under 6’s to Under 17’s) and 4 Senior teams (Under 18’s +).

Season 2023 brought with it many highlights for the popular local club.

“Last season saw 13 of our 17 competition teams qualify for semi-finals. We had 6 teams make the grand finals, with 2 of these teams being crowned Premiers. We had 2 umpires receive National Umpiring Badges, and 4 receive District Badges” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club.

Heading into the new season, Michelle and her fellow committee members are looking forward to a big year.

“We have a few new coaches this year, and we hope to run some training sessions for them and our returning coaches in the coming months. We have a lot of players seeking to learn how to umpire this year, this is a promising sign, because without umpires, we can’t put teams on the court” she stated.

“We also have a lot of new players, so I will be eager to see how they all progress over the course of the season” Michelle added.

With team numbers all but complete, the club welcomes any potential volunteers and sponsors.

“At present, we have one spot available in the Under 7’s, Under 11’s, Under 15’s, Under 17’s and Seniors. We are still looking for a coach for one team and are always looking for more volunteers to help out in various capacities. We are always looking for sponsors large or small. All enquiries can be made to jsnetball@gmail.com” she ended.

“The Show at Llandilo attracted more than 100 people last month, which I’m told is a record for that little hall” said Jonnie to the Jordan Springs Gazette.

Joining Jonnie on stage was Roland Storm, who was discovered as a 15 year old on Johnny O’Keefe’s show, Six O’Clock Rock. He was also a regular performer on the TV shows Bandstand and Sing, Sing, Sing.

“I love the atmosphere of the Llandilo Community Hall. It takes me back to my touring days with Johnny O’Keefe” Roland explained.

Lorraine Delaney spends a great deal of her time in the US. She has toured with many of Australia’s top country music artists and has also worked with the great Tom. T. Hall on his Australian tour. Charley Boyter OAM was a former guitar player for Slim Dusty. He is renowned as one of the country’s most respected bush ballad guitar players. The Jonnie Russell band featured Tomi Grasso, Glen Skarrett, Ken Foote, Joanne Foote, and Rob Sparks.

Jonnie Russell is about to embark on an exciting new project, a song to promote Australia’s greatest circus, Stardust Circus. Local Physiotherapist Shares Top Tips for Safe Running

As the running community continues to expand with what feels like a huge a surge in new participants, Nathan Duguid, Senior Physiotherapist at The Healthy Body Company in Jordan Springs, urges runners to prioritise safety and injury prevention through proper training techniques and appropriate load management.

With the recent influx of individuals taking up running, Nathan emphasises the importance of easing into the activity to avoid common injuries that can arise from overexertion or improper form. “Running is a fantastic way to stay active and improve overall health, but it’s crucial to approach it with caution, especially for beginners,” Nathan advises.

Nathan Duguid shares his top five tips for safe running:

1. Maintain a Slow Pace: “Keeping your pace slow, preferably in zone 2 for at least 80% of your kilometres, allows for a steady effort that minimises strain on the body. Zone 2 means that you should be able to comfortably hold a conversation or sing while running. While it might feel boring, the slow pace allows you to recover more quickly from your workouts and means that the 20% performed at a higher rate is a better intensity. This strategy supports desirable physiological changes that happen by keeping your heart rate lower.”

2. Limit Frequency: “Running three times per week at most, with at least one rest day in between sessions, helps prevent overuse injuries and gives your body adequate time to recover. This recovery time is crucial to give your body enough time to adapt to the running stressors.”

3. Incorporate Strength Training: “Performing leg strengthening exercises one to two days per week, ideally twice, helps build muscle support around the joints, reducing the risk of injuries such as shin splints or knee pain. An effective strengthening program will support your muscles to build capacity to handle forces, reducing the risk of injury and making you a more economical runner”.

4. Gradual Progression: “Gradually increase your weekly kilometres to allow your body to adapt to the demands of running. Follow a structured plan, such as increasing by no more than 10% each week and remember that it’s not necessary to increase distance every week. Run/walk intervals are ideal for someone who is new to running”.

5. Listen to Your Body: “Pay attention to any discomfort or niggles during your runs. If you experience pain, give yourself extra rest days or modify your training regimen accordingly. Ignoring warning signs can lead to more serious injuries.”

As more individuals embrace running as part of their fitness routine, Nathan Duguid encourages everyone to prioritise safety and longevity in their approach. “By following these tips and listening to your body, you can enjoy the numerous benefits of running while reducing the risk of injury,” Nathan concludes.

Fixing Chronic Lower Back Pain

Most people have lower back pain at some point. Often it disappears after mild anti-inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But sometimes pain remains. This longer lasting back pain might simply be annoying, a bit better when you warm-up but always there in the background. At worst it can be a constant debilitating pain.

Often pain radiates down into the buttock and legs (sciatica) sometimes leading to strange, tingling or loss of feeling down an affected leg to the toes. This type of chronic back problem can stop your working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated, especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue.

Many individual causes can lead to chronic back pain but (in most instances) chronic pain develops as follows.

A simple overuse or other injury, results in the release of a variety of molecules by the injured cells and damaged tissue. These molecules cause fluid and immune cells that come/s from the blood stream, and affected back muscles swell and shorten (tighten). The same molecules cause nerves in the affected area to inflame sending pain signals to the brain. The muscles reduced

ability to contract, plus swelling, can lead to lowered blood and lymph flow away from the tissue, resulting in inefficient clearing of inflammatory molecules away from injured tissue.

Injury is often also one sided, the resultant shortened muscles on the affected side may result in altered spinal alignment.

Under such conditions the affected muscles and connective tissue can become locked into a cycle of shortness/tightness and inflammation/pain. Exercise may help relieve pain, but exercise may sometimes also worsen problems. The solution lies in using specific remedial techniques to:

1. Remove the inflammatory fluid that has built up, and

2. Lengthen the affected back muscles and connective tissue.

Once inflammatory chemicals are removed, muscle function, pain, spinal alignment can normalise.

Back pain is often completely relieved, even in many longstanding cases. The same is often true for some chronic shoulder and knee complaints. If you’d like to know more call Andreas at Beautiful Health and Wellness on 02 4777 5264.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

T-Spoon Cafe

3/12 Tindale St penrith

This month, lunchtime found me at the T-Spoon Café in Jamisontown in the Home Maker Centre, near Spotlight.

The staff were friendly and efficient, and a quick look down the menu was enough to see choices were extensive.

Our table ordered both the Lemon Pepper Squid and the Halloumi Corn Fritters. The Squid was served with hand cut chips, salad and tartare sauce, the fritters consisted of two savoury fritters accompanied by zesty guacamole, smoked salmon (there was a bacon option as well) and a couple of poached eggs.

The lemon pepper squid, $21, were delicious. The outside was crisp, the inside soft and moist, and seasoning was not too spicy to my taste. The tartare sauce proved why it is the tried-and-true favourite of seafood condiments. The chips were hot, fresh, crisp, and nicely seasoned, the salad fresh.

The corn fritters, at $22, were enjoyable, tasty, and crispy. The salmon and slightly runny eggs were a dish on their own.

The coffee we finished with was smooth, the café uses Toby Estate coffee beans.

The café atmosphere was pleasant, the service friendly and attentive. They catered carefully to my allergies and checked minute details with the chef.

Connecting with Inner Peace

Women in the Ropes Crossing community recently gathered for a serene and soulful experience at the Women’s Meditation Circle on Friday, March 8. Held at 8:00pm, the circle provided a space for women to come together, unwind and connect with their inner selves.

Guided by Danni Godfrey, the group went through a series of meditative practices designed to promote relaxation and mindfulness. The session included breathwork, gratitude journaling to set intentions and concluded with a cozy tea session where attendees had the opportunity to chat and share their experiences.

The menu includes gluten-free and vegetarian options, kids’ meals, and the Café also offers a catering menu.

Overall, a nice meal, good service, average prices, and I will try something else from the menu when I visit again in the future.

The event was hosted by The Divinely, a wellness centre that offers a range of holistic therapy services, including 1:1 therapy sessions, as well as their ‘Brain, Body, Soul 10-week Programs’ and Intuitive Guidance Readings, all aimed at promoting holistic well-being and personal growth.

“My approach to wellness is comprehensive, encompassing nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and mental health,” said Danni. “I craft a personalised plan tailored specifically to your unique needs and lifestyle, ensuring it resonates deeply with your individual journey.”

“Throughout each week of our journey together, I remain by your side offering guidance and support as you navigate your new routine,” said Danni of the 10-week course. “Whether you encounter challenges or seek to fine-tune your approach, I’m here to provide assistance and facilitate adjustments as needed.”

Looking ahead, The Divinely has upcoming classes scheduled, including the next meditation session on Monday, March 25, and continuing monthly on every full moon, in Ropes Crossing. The upcoming meditation will focus on harnessing the magical energy of the full moon in Libra for the month of March, along with a penumbral lunar eclipse.

Participants can expect a guided meditation, breathwork, gratitude card prompts, and post-meditation tea and ‘chick chat’. The sessions provide a nurturing environment for women to explore their spirituality, enhance their well-being, and connect with like-minded individuals in the community.

With a focus on support and guidance, Danni is dedicated to helping her clients navigate their wellness journey with compassion and understanding.

The Women’s Meditation Circle at Ropes Crossing offers a valuable opportunity for women to prioritise self-care, find inner peace, and cultivate a sense of community. With a blend of mindfulness practices and supportive environments, events like these contribute to the overall well-being and empowerment of women in the local area.

For more information, visit The Divinely on Facebook or their website.

Last month, the Jordan Springs Probus group had our Annual General Meeting, where we elected a new Committee. Their job is to create new ideas and outings for the coming year for all our members.

Over the next few months, we will hear from the local Fire Brigade, have a talk by a local podiatrist, and NSW Services will be presenting an interesting talk about all the things that they do, and services for older people.

Next month, we will once again be holding our annual Biggest Morning Tea, and we encourage all members to come along and bring a friend or two for the day.

Throughout the year, we will continue with our monthly lunches and other exciting events. We have the upcoming Hawkesbury paddle wheeler trip, a live theatre show in Richmond, a trivia night and mystery train trip.

For more information, contact Judy on 0414 766 763, Tricia 0414 976 994, Annie 0409 230 753 or via email at jordanspringsprobus@ gmail.com.

Jordan Springs Probus group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at Jordan Springs Community Hub, 2-6 Cullen Avenue, Jordan Springs, at 10am. New members are always welcome, so come along to a meeting and see if our group is for you.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite

Service Times: 10am each Sunday

with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

In Scripture, it is recorded that Jesus disappeared from the sight of his followers. This event became known in history as the Ascension and became tradition within Christian teaching.

On reflection, the recorded event presents some difficulties. The followers believed in a three- tier universe with heaven above and hell below. This concept is no longer tenable: there is only ‘out there’ with gravity keeping everything in place. While astronomy raises more questions than answers (and this science is one of the most challenging amongst all sciences), it is in celebrating the worship of the Ascension that a particular dimension is added. That dimension is ‘the great unknown’ giving meaning and understanding as to why there is life, why there is this wonderful and almost incomprehensible universe.

Yet in common parlance we still ‘look up’ to space. This tests the credibility of our ability to apply reason in accepting the recorded event.

To the followers of Jesus, it gave conviction that our total humanity was received into the totality of the life of the Holy Trinity:

• The Father, who created.

• The Son, who cleared the gulf between humanity’s capability and weakness, and gave us separation from that capability.

• The Holy Spirit, which confirms or ‘makes strong’.

Humanity’s capability is the eternal ‘now.’ God, in the eternal Trinity, allowing the Holy Spirit to make strong so that we are enabled to ‘be.’ In this newfound freedom is the realisation that to depreciate our capability is to depreciate the Love of God.

In placing the Ascension within the context of faith, it is seen as the completion of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. By this, reason allows answers to be provided and enhances understanding, and allows the created to honour the Creator.

FAITH – MOSAIC COMMUNITY CHURCH (LLANDILO)

God Help Me Stay Calm!

We hate to admit it, but prayer – especially public prayer – always seems to be one of those moments when people’s minds begin to wander. Sometimes the prayer is too long, other times too wordy, or sometimes even just too distracting as we try to listen in and follow along.

However, in the early 1930’s, a man named Reinhold Neibuhr prayed a prayer that got everyone’s attention. This prayer is still being used today. In fact, one of his colleagues, who heard his prayer, ended up publishing it on the front page of a local Californian Newspaper, on March 15, 1933.

It simply read: “Oh, God, give us courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and insight to know the one from the other.”

It soon went viral, appearing in numerous other newspapers throughout the United States, until one day it caught the attention of a local Alcoholics Anonymous Group. They immediately latched on to it and adapted it as part of a 12-step alcoholic recovery program: “God, grant me the serenity (calmness) to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things which can be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Since then, it has become known as The Serenity Prayer, appearing in books, and posters, and in Hallmark Cards all around the world.

It has also been inverted and re-purposed by others proclaiming: “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I’m changing the things I cannot accept!”

Anyone else feel like the first 3 months of this year have whizzed by?

This year, I set myself a goal to reach new heights by taking on studies to enhance future opportunities. I must say, while extremely intense and at times I wondered if I’d be able to juggle all the balls, I’m pleased to report I’ve come through the other side and am so pleased I threw caution to the wind and decided to climb that mountain.

However big or small the hurdle is, we’re all climbing them - be proud, stand tall and with your head held high. You deserve to!

There’s always lots happening in/ around the community, and this month is no different! Get yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy Your Community News.

Be thankful for today, because in one moment, your entire life could change. Make the moments count!
