A Big Thumbs Up For Olivia’s Playground Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith, met with Ms Rebecca Ho, Executive Officer of Touched by Olivia to announce their successful application for funding through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program.

“I am pleased to announce that Touched by Olivia will receive a grant of $35,369 under the 2013 Community Building Partnership Program,” said Stuart Ayres.

This grant is made up of joint contributions with $15,000 by Bart Bassett MP, Member for Londonderry and $20,369 by Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith.

Touched by Olivia works with local councils, corporations and communities to build inclusive playspaces giving children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play in thoughtfully designed spaces. These playgrounds are called “Livvi’s Place”.

This funding will be used to create Livvi’s Place in Jordan Springs which will provide a secure play space where children will be able to develop play skills and interact with the wider community.

Stuart Ayres said inclusive play-spaces serve as a great social outlet for all children, allowing them to build friendships and enable them to live healthy and active lives.

“I am proud to have recommended this project for funding and appreciate the benefit it will provide to young people in our area,” added Stuart Ayres.

Community Needs More Detail on Airport Now that a decision to build Sydney’s second airport at Badgerys Creek has been announced, we wait for more detailed plans to be revealed.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said that Council had made numerous calls for details on the range and scope of the airport to be revealed so that proper planning for infrastructure could be started in earnest.

“Council conducted a community opinion survey recently and found 7 out of 10 local residents indicated that Penrith would be better off with the development of the airport at Badgerys Creek,” Cr Fowler said.

“Council has consistently called for more information on the second Sydney airport proposal and these results are indicative of a community which is awaiting this information.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott last month announced more than $3 billion will be spent on roads in Western Sydney to support the city’s second airport, and that is a good start,” Cr Fowler said.

“There will undoubtedly be economic benefits from the airport, but those benefits must accrue to the local community as well as the region and NSW,” he said.

“In order for the benefits to flow to the people of Penrith, proper infrastructure provision must be made to support the airport and Western Sydney.

“There will also be social and environmental impacts and these also need to be addressed.”

Cr Fowler said that when more detail on the Badgerys Creek airport and its associated infrastructure is released, Council will be able to inform and engage further with our community.

Real love can be very costly. For instance in the month of May my wife’s birthday, Mothers’ Day and our wedding anniversary all fall within the space of 12 days! If I am not careful, I could face a big number on my Mastercard bill at the end of the month.

This year, all of this comes only a week or two after Easter. Easter can also be expensive if we get too carried away on the chocolate bunny thing. But the real cost of Easter comes before us when we reflect on the great cost to God of His love for us. The death of Jesus was the price of our forgiveness. He died for us!

But commemorations of love are not just a cost to be born – they’re a cause for great celebration. In our household, birthdays, anniversaries and Mothers’ Day are days of being thankful for all that they mean. Easter has likewise been a great celebration as we are thankful that Jesus not only died, but rose again. The death and resurrection of Jesus are the foundation on which we stand as Christian believers and have profound implications for our lives. In Scripture it is recorded that Jesus, the Christ disappeared from the sight of the Apostles. This recorded event became known in history as the Ascension into Heaven and became tradition within Christian teaching. [Ascension Day is held in many churches. At Saint David’s it is celebrated at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th May] On reflection the recorded event presents some particular difficulties. The Apostles believed in a three tier universe: the earth with heaven above and hell below. This concept is no longer tenable with what is known about our universe today.

There is no up or down only ‘out there’ with gravity keeping everything in place.

Yet in common parlance we still ‘look up’ to space. As such the transition of Jesus the Christ to ‘out there’ tests the credibility of our ability to apply reason to assist our acceptance of the recorded event .Certainly one factor is that the Ascension is seen as the completion of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and gives credence to the affirmation that Jesus is the Christ. In this is meant that the very long history of Semitic religion and prophesy found its completion in Jesus.

To the Apostles the Resurrection gave conviction that Jesus was the ’anointed’ Emmanuel [God with us] and the Ascension was the totality of our humanity being received into the totality of life of the Trinity: The Father who created, the Son who cleared the gulf between humanity’s capability and humanity’s weakness and separation from that capability and the Holy Spirit that ‘confirms’ or ‘makes strong’. Humanity’s capability is the ‘eternal now’. God is the ‘eternal Trinity’ allowing the Holy Spirit to ‘make strong’ so that we are enabled to ‘be’. And in that new found freedom the realization that to depreciate our capability is to depreciate the love of God. Another factor is to place the Ascension within the context of our Faith. Naturally if the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is not accepted then argument for acceptance of the event is nullified. But, if on reflection and through prayer the work of Jesus the Christ is accepted then the Ascension takes on meaning.

While astronomy raises more questions rather than providing answers [and this science is one of the most challenging amongst all the sciences], it is in celebrating in worship the Ascension a particular dimension is added. That dimension is the ‘great unknown’ of giving meaning and understanding as to why there is life, why is there this wonderful and almost incomprehensible universe. The life, death, resurrection and ascension allows answers to be provided that enhances understanding and allows the created to honour the Creator.

The mid 1950s to the early 1960s era was a time of transition.

The wholesome mindset of the early 50s was being taken over by the revolutionary attitude of the mid 60’s. Women began to show off their sexier sides while still holding on to most of their morally rigid ideals. With the introduction of shorter hairstyles, makeup increasingly emphasized the eyes. The doe-eyed look of mascara-outlined eyes with slightly elongated corners was accentuated by thickly pencilled eyebrows.

The mods and rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures of the early to mid-1960s. The rocker subculture was centered on motorcycling, and their appearance reflected that. The mod subculture (modernist) was centered on fashion and music, and many mods rode scooters. Mods wore suits (often tailor-made) and other clean-cut outfits, and preferred 1960s music genres such as soul, rhythm and blues, ska and beat music. Mods favoured trendy, "hyper-cool" styles, a bit like the hipsters of today.

As Chrissy Keepence from the Charm school states I believe that vintage fashions, charm, etiquette, manners, poise and posture never really go out of fashion but rather are overshadowed by current trends and commercial viabilities.

I think it is the timeless elegance and romantic notions of the past we like to hang on to, as our worlds are so complex, rushed, competitive and shambolic at times.

Next Generation of City Leaders Future politicians have a chance to dabble in local government – in a competition for local primary school pupils.

As part of Local Government Week 2014, Penrith City Council is giving lucky students the opportunity to be Junior Mayor or Junior Councillors and take part in a mock Council meeting.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the competition provides a unique opportunity for primary students to learn about the role of Council.

“We’re giving one lucky student the chance to be Junior Mayor and 14 others the chance to be Junior Councillors,” Cr Fowler said. “I wish there had been a competition like this when I was growing up. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our young residents.”

To enter the competition, students need to outline two things they would do to make the City of Penrith a better place to live, if they were Mayor.

Entries must fit on one A4 piece of paper, or be an audio visual file. They can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the entries,” Cr Fowler said.

“We’re always looking for good advice from the community – no matter the age of residents.” Entries must be submitted by Friday 30 May 2014.

The winning Junior Mayor and Junior Councillors need to be available to attend introductory meetings at Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 16 June and Monday 14 July 2014. The mock Council meeting will be held on Monday 11 August 2014.

Doll And Bear And Collectables Show The Penrith Dolls, Bears , Craft and Collectables Show - one of the most successful Doll and Bear shows in Australia - is being held again Sunday 29 June 2014. The venue is the Pavilion at Panthers World of Entertainment, Mulgoa Road, Penrith.

This is one of the most successful Doll and Bear shows in Australia, now in its 16th Year. The show provides a great day out for everyone.

Students will have the opportunity to complete either a Victorian antique style riding top hat or Steam Punk inspired top hat to fit a 16” to 18” fashion doll.

Proceeds from this show go to supporting Zonta Service Projects which are focussed on initiating and supporting programs for women in the areas of health, welfare, educational opportunities, economic and professional status.

Raffle tickets will be available at the door for $2 each. All proceeds of the raffle will support the Leukaemia Foundation.

From the Principal’s Desk Llandilo Public School Principal: Bruno Zuliani Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends, In jest I often refer to our wonderful school as “the place of pace�. This is for good reason and supported by the fact that in catering for the academic, social and sporting needs of our students, the school provides our girls and boys with a vast and comprehensive range of inclusive opportunities.

Term 2 has just commenced and staff have been very eager in welcoming back our students and their families sharing wonderful tales of Easter vacation happenings.

At the end of last term two very special events took place involving our entire community.

Stage 3 (Yr 5 & Yr 6) students from Llandilo Public School in collaboration with Penrith Council and our local Chinese community, combined in celebration and recognition of Betty Wong a long term resident of Llandilo. She has over many years worked with assisting local Chinese people assimilate into the Penrith area. Mrs Dianne Burrell our school coordinator for this project was very excited with the day and a very appreciative and emotional Mrs Wong thanked those in attendance and especially students from our school when presented with a plaque recognising her wonderful efforts.

The Annual Easter Hat Parade was a huge success and those in attendance were eager to give a thumbs up to Miss Hogarth and Mr Andrews for their organisation of the event. The hats, headgear and crazy hair entries were out of this world and wow factor. The sausage sizzle barbecue organised by our P&C was delicious and reminiscent of dishes produced on My Kitchen Rules.

Our school’s P&C and the Easter Bunny also got together and presented every student with a free Easter Egg to celebrate this special time of the year.

I look forward to sharing our school news with you over Term 2 and welcoming new students and their families considering Public school enrolment at Llandilo school.

Frequently I write this article based on what I’ve been talking with parents about during the month. This month, I have been talking a lot about some of the most basic parenting tools for your toolkit which are also highly effective. They all come from the Triple P parenting group.

Tool number 1 Remind your children of ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Instead of saying “don’t run”, say “walk”. Instead of saying “don’t hit”, say “hands to self”.

When you use the negative, ie, “run”, “hit”, children don’t hear the “don’t”, they just hear “run” and “hit”.

Tool number 2 Descriptive praise is very powerful. Saying ‘good boy/girl’ makes your kids praise junkies. They love it, but they never quite understand what they’ve done well. Descriptive praise tells children what they are doing well.

Examples, “thanks for picking up your socks, and putting them in the wash basket, that helps me out heaps”, “I really like how you kept going on that task until you got it just the way you wanted it”, You thought really carefully about that before you did it, I admire that”.

Tool number 3 The more attention you pay to children’s behaviours, the more of them they will do. This is based on 40 years of research, it’s not earth mother or hippie-la-la stuff. So, if you pay a lot of attention to your child’s negative behaviours, what do you think will happen? Yes, they will do more of them. Think about it – you would hate being reminded of all of the times you stuff up – doesn’t make you feel good about yourself does it?

Choose one of your child’s behaviours that drives you bonkers. Got it? OK, now think of the opposite behaviour. Now start paying more attention to the opposite behaviour (the positive one) with descriptive praise.

An example, if your child speaks too loudly, then instead of rousing on him for being too loud, give him descriptive praise every time he speaks quietly.

Tool number 4 If you call your child ‘naughty’ often enough, he or she will prove you right. And that goes for any other negative name that you call your child – clumsy, hopeless, lazy, etc.

Words are powerful, especially when they are coming from you. Children internalise the negatives we say to them or call them. Say them often enough, and you are digging a pit of shame for your child so deep and so wide, it will take them a lifetime to crawl out of it. Shaming a child causes mental health problems later in life.

Super Nanny did parenting a great disservice. Get rid of that ‘naughty’ corner/chair/mat. Do it right now!!! Call it a ‘calm down zone’ or ‘chill-out chair’. Be creative but make it positive.

Remove ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’ from your vocabulary. And now for your challenge…Put these 4 tools into action at your place, and see how things change for the better.

What’s Happening at Henry Fulton Public School Henry Fulton Public School has just completed a very busy, educational first term. Whilst we ensure that the curriculum is covered in our classrooms and that Literacy and Numeracy are given due emphasis, we also believe it is important to educate the whole child.

In the area of sport, we held our school swimming carnival and sent a strong team to the district swimming carnival. From there we had two swimmers go onto the regional swimming championships. We also held a very successful school cross country and family picnic day. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were involved and parents came along to make it an enjoyable family day for all.

We have also had success with our State Knock-Out Teams representing the school in various sports. Parent/Teacher Interviews were held during first term, allowing for an exchange of information between parents and teachers, which from all the feedback, was very successful. We held our annual K-2 Easter Hat Parade at the end of the term.

Our students’ safety is of great concern and for this reason, the HFPS staff have chosen to highlight road safety in 2014. Our students visited the CARES Program, which is a Police run road safety program for cyclists.

Finally, in the last three days of the term, our Years 3&4 students went on a three-day camp. This camp, as always, provided a fantastic educational experience. For many of our students it was the first time away from home for an extended period of time. The reports indicate the children had a great time learning many new skills and as usual, the behaviour of our Henry Fulton students was outstanding. It has been a wonderful start to the year and we look forward to the term ahead.

Easy • Makes 8 • Time 40 Mins

Ingredients • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 egg • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk • 40g butter • 200g frozen mixed berries • 1 cup maple syrup • 1 vanilla bean, split • Mixed berries, extra, to serve

Staying Hydrated

Method 1. Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until well combined. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest.

2. Melt half the butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat.

Spoon 1/4 cup (60ml) of pancake mixture into the pan and sprinkle with mixed berries. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and pancakes are golden underneath. Turn and cook for 1 minute or until golden underneath. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Repeat with remaining batter and mixed berries, greasing pan between each batch.

3. Place the maple syrup in a small saucepan. Use a small, sharp knife to scrape the vanilla seeds into the maple syrup and add the bean. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until heated through.

4. Place pancakes on serving plates and top with extra berries. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve immediately.

Buttermilk Scones • Easy • Makes 12 • Time 24 Mins

With the onset of winter it is easy to forget that our body still needs to be hydrated. Maybe you do not feel hot and thirsty however your body consistently requires water to maintain health, no matter what the season. Exposure to heaters such as air conditioners, gas, oil, electric and wood heaters has a very drying effect on the body. The moisture lost needs to be replaced.

The human body is approximately 60% water however this varies depending on age, sex, adiposity & hydration level.

Your organs, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints all need water to function properly. Water keeps your skin supple, helps to maintain correct mineral and electrolyte balance, helps to prevent hair from drying and splitting & helps to maintain the acid/alkaline balance in your body. Your blood is made up of approximately 60% water.

Once you start to feel thirsty, you have already lost around 2-3% of your body’s water. Mental performance and physical coordination start to become impaired before thirst kicks in, typically around 1% dehydration. It is quite possible that if you are feeling a bit light headed or you are just not thinking clearly, you may be dehydrated.

Water –structured water, filtered water, alkaline water etc. drinking water, whole house systems -the choices are endless – make sure you do your research. Whatever you decide, remember you need to stay hydrated.

Ingredients • 2 cups self-raising flour • 1 tablespoon caster sugar • Pinch of salt • 60g butter, chilled, chopped

• 3/4 cup buttermilk • Extra buttermilk, for brushing • Raspberry jam and whipped cream, to serve

Method 1. Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Position oven rack in the top half of oven.

2. Sift flour, sugar and salt into a bowl. Add butter. Using fingertips, rub butter into flour mixture until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

3. Make a well in centre of mixture. Add buttermilk. Using a flatbladed knife, stir until a sticky dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently until just smooth.

4. Using a lightly floured rolling pin, gently roll dough out until 2cm thick. Using a 6cm round cutter, cut out scones. Press leftover dough together. Repeat to make 12 scones.

5. Place scones, just touching, on prepared tray. Brush with buttermilk.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden and hollow when tapped on top. Serve with jam and cream.
