The Mad Hatter and Friends Come to Town Easter arrived early in Jordan Springs on April 6, when the Mad Hatter’s Easter Tea Party took place at the Jordan Springs Town Centre. Children and adults alike were bubbling with excitement (and possibly the after-effects of too much sugar).

The Easter festivities kicked off at 11am, with loads of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts and, of course, the Easter Bunny, dropped by to see everyone.

The kids were supplied a passport that was stamped once they participated in the trail hunt. There was Easter hat making, biscuit decorating and colouring in for all the crafty kids. Face painting, airbrush tattoos, an animal farm, putt putt golf, giant chess, snakes and ladders, showbags and the Hot Potato Band all kept the kids extremely busy.

For the adults, there were free massages, market stalls, tea/ coffee and a BBQ fundraiser on hand. A special thank you must go to Lend Lease for coordinating such a fantastic event.

Shrills of excitement were heard as the Easter Bunny arrived, providing kids (of all ages) with much delight. A great afternoon was had by all the families that came and they all look forward to the Mad Hatter and his friends returning again.

I am almost writing this in disbelief that we have already arrived at April, with Easter only a few weeks away! We’re on the cusp of school holidays and another term has passed. Before long, it will be Mother’s Day and not to wish the year away, but winter is creeping across the hill as we speak.

This month’s edition has some wonderful highlights such as our cover story about the recent Easter event held at Jordan Springs Town Centre. Your Local Bushcare Group Needs You! Join Bushcare and join others who care. Would you like to meet more people in your neighbourhood? Would you like to have fun, while helping to protect your local environment?

Penrith City Council is establishing a new Bushcare group in Cranebrook. The eight other Bushcare groups in Penrith City are also looking for new members.

Mayor of Penrith Ross Fowler OAM said “Bushcare was a great way to meet people, while helping to care for your local environment.“ Bushcare is open to all ages and you don’t need any experience,” Cr Fowler said. “You just need to volunteer a few hours of your time each month.”

The new Cranebrook Community Bushcare group will help care for Cumberland Plain Woodland bushland – which is critically endangered vegetation under both State and Federal Threatened Species Legislation.

“Penrith contains approximately 17% of the remaining Cumberland Plain Woodland in Sydney, making it very important that we do what we can to protect and restore these bushland areas,” Cr Fowler said.

The other local Bushcare groups are located throughout the Penrith City region. “Volunteering to help care for local bushland provides an opportunity for the whole family to work together, or an opportunity to meet your neighbours and people who share your interests,” Cr Fowler said.

“You can also build a sense of ownership and achievement as you see the difference you’ve made to a particular site.” Bushcare volunteers primarily help care for sites by removing weeds and planting native plants.

What makes a GOOD day?

What would it take for you to call a day GOOD? If I designed a good day for me I’d start with bacon and eggs for breakfast, followed by a game of golf with mates and finish it off with a BBQ around the pool joined by family and friends.

What does your GOOD day look like? This month we all get a day off for a Friday called GOOD. Everyone calls it GOOD Friday. But why call it good?

Anytime we get a four day weekend - that has to be good! But that is not where Good Friday comes from. The key event of the first Good Friday was a death. I doubt that was on anyone’s ‘good’ day list.

The death was not just a quiet passing. The death was the carrying out of a death penalty. Oddly, the victim had been found innocent by the highest court in the land, yet due to overwhelming public pressure the judge sentenced him to death. And the day is labelled GOOD. It is an odd description.

There must be more to it ... and there is.

This death was about FORGIVENESS. Real forgiveness from God for all people. It is a GOOD day because this death, the death of Jesus Christ, was to offer forgiveness to all people for rejecting God as the most important one in their lives. We call it GOOD Friday for this death brings the promise of eternal paradise. Join us this Good Friday at 9:30am to find out more.

Jobs Boost for Penrith NSW Minister Assisting the Premier on Western Sydney and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres has welcomed plans to relocate and consolidate more than 3,000 public servants to new offices in Western Sydney.

“This is a move that will boost Penrith economy and support local jobs as part of the NSW Government’s ‘decade of decentralisation’ policy,” Mr Ayres said.

“This about a fair go for the people of Penrith and this decision will provide a significant economic boost. It’s a clear demonstration of the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government’s commitment to Western Sydney.

“Starting next year, more than 3,000 public servants will be relocated and consolidated to new offices here in Penrith, as well as in Liverpool and Parramatta,” he said.

NSW Sport and Recreation will move from Sydney Olympic Park to Penrith.

“In the coming weeks, the NSW Government will seek expressions of interest for 5,000 square metres of commercial space here in Penrith, which equates to between five and 10 stories of additional office space,” Mr Ayres said.

“The move will create a huge amount of activity in the area - stimulating development, supporting local businesses and creating jobs during construction of the new offices.

“Decentralisation makes economic sense. It has the added benefit of ensuring public servants are based in the communities they serve helping to improve the delivery of services.

“The relocation will also provide more opportunities for Penrith residents who want to work closer to where they live, and will help reduce congestion in the Sydney CBD,” Mr Ayres said.

The NSW Government will not own the new office accommodation, but will instead become an anchor tenant for new investment in the region.

“This decentralisation strategy adds to the huge infrastructure projects we are delivering for Western Sydney including WestConnex, the North West and South West Rail Links, as well delivering more nurses, teachers and police,” Mr Ayres concluded.

Last month, the Nepean Valley RSL Day Club was officially opened with a celebratory lunch and cake cutting, held at the Salvation Army Hall, Glenmore Park.

This special occasion was attended by numerous officials and dignitaries including, Jennifer Collins, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Veterans’ Affairs; Tom Barnsley – RSL State Coordinator of Day Clubs; Cllr Tricia Hitchen representing Stuart Ayres, State Member for Penrith; Rick Cortese representing Tanya Davies, State Member for Mulgoa; Cllr Ross Fowler, Mayor of Penrith who was also representing Fiona Scott, Federal Member for Lindsay; along with all the Nepean Valley Day Club members and volunteers.

16 committed volunteers regularly attend to make certain that each Wednesday runs smoothly for the Day Club members.

Strong support through sponsorship is provided by the City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch and practical support by the Salvation Army, Bakers Delight at Glenmore Park & Guardian Funerals, Minchinbury.

Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both the ex-service and wider community. Day Clubs offer social support and friendship to older people who are still living in the community but who are unable to attend more active programs.

Many Day Club members believe they are healthier, happier and more active due to their involvement in their Club. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch). Day Clubs provide a unique opportunity for volunteers to become involved in rewarding work and make a real difference in their local community.

The life, work, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ: is it possible to argue that it is relevant for today? The answer in itself defies demonstration as it is answered in faith based on reason and an understanding of history. The choice, does it not, comes down to a decision based on the ‘yes or no’ to the Christian challenge of its relevancy.

Passion Week and Good Friday sets out the challenge: why did Jesus, who is called the Christ [one appointed] offer his life?. It is interesting that in the lead up to his trial and death he did not confront his followers but asked them to share a meal with him.

That meal became a constant in Christian worship following his resurrection. The meal recalls his words ‘the blood of the Covenant that is shed for many’. This is an ancient sacrificial concept that is somewhat foreign to our day and generation, but when reason is applied to attempt understanding the first surprise is that the greater our efforts to understand the greater the silence of Jesus.

This silence comes about as the challenge is to look at ourselves, our society and the world at large. In doing so much of our reality is the awesome dominance of selfishness both at the individual and community level. People are happy to follow a life that takes rather than gives. This becomes evident in a lot of religious practice: ‘God will give and make me happy’.

However the meal that Jesus invites us to share is the reverse: I will lose my life but in doing so will gain life: even death will not separate us from that life. As always the moment is part of the eternal. Today the meal is the essential core of the Faith as the meal [Holy Communion] in sharing the bread and wine, is the outward visible sign of the actual sharing of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our Christian discipline is enhanced not only as individuals but also in the community with that mystic but beautiful affirmation: we are the Body of Christ and His Spirit is with us.

So faith gives the affirmation that his life, death and resurrection is relevant for us and in that we accept the challenge and discipline our lives by walking with a clear consciousness and in honesty. Thus the work that Jesus began is continued.

From the Principal’s Desk Llandilo Public School Principal: Bruno Zuliani Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of Llandilo Public School, At the time of writing, Term 1 is almost at a close and students and their families are looking forward to the Easter break.

Connection Rituals If your child is having trouble separating from you into childcare or school, or even to family and friends, sometimes it helps to have a ‘connection ritual’.

My youngest boy taught me the importance of this.

People say that we don’t get an instruction manual when we have our kids.

But we actually do. It’s the child himself.

Our child tells us what she needs, through her behaviour. When children feel safe within the relationship with you, they will tell you what they need. We just have to listen.

My boy developed a ritual at drop-off time and bedtime where he would ask me to blow him a kiss, and he would catch it and put it in his pocket ‘for later’ and then he would pat his pocket. And I had to catch his kiss and put it in my pocket. He was then happy to separate.

Thus, a connection ritual is something that communicates your love, care, and attention to your child. It is similar to a ‘comfort item’ but there is no tangible object, just a memory.

I am a strong advocate for comfort items like a teddy or a blanket. In the life of a young child, they are a substitute for the primary caregiver. A comfort item provides comfort to the young child during a time when he is starting to realise that he is a separate person to his primary caregiver but the separation causes him anxiety (Dr Donald Winnicott). The comfort item is a reminder of the carer’s love.

As children grow older, and it’s not so cool to carry your teddy into school with you, a connection ritual can take the place of a comfort item.

A connection ritual can be anything that reminds your child of the bond between you. It can be a word, or a song, but it has to be the same thing each time. One of the coolest connection rituals I’ve seen is a family handshake. You know those funny handshakes that you see on American TV shows. The ones where they shake, then do a thumbs up and a slide, and bump their fists together, and wiggle their fingers, and do an explosion gesture, and all of that?

The connection ritual would be done as the final thing when you drop the children off at preschool or school, with a “see ya at the end of school” before you separate.

In the USA, connection rituals are standard practice in some schools. The teacher looks the child in the eyes, smiles warmly, shakes the hand of each child as he or she enters the classroom and says “good morning (name of the child)”. Sometimes this job is given to a child who is called ‘the greeter’ and it is just like any other job in the classroom which is rotated amongst the children, just like ‘line leader’.

Basically, for the parents the connection ritual is something that creates connection, communicates care, nurture, and attention, and fills the child’s emotional cup before the separation. For teachers, it’s a ritual that communicates to the child that he or she is welcome at school.

Anxiety Do you suffer from anxiety? Do you ever feel resistance to doing something? Do you not do things because it would mean stepping out of your comfort zone? Do you avoid doing things because you might look silly to others, you feel inferior, you will make a fool of yourself, you are not good enough, you don’t have the right clothes, you are too fat, you are too skinny, you are not smart enough? Do you come up with other excuses why you can’t participate in activities etc. If you answered “Yes” to any of these, you are experiencing anxiety.

Anxiety is an unpleasant state of inner turmoil. There are several types of anxiety which people can experience, the most common ones being Social Anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Specific Phobias, GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) & Panic Disorder. For some people, anxiety is part of their daily life eg GAD & OCD, whilst for others there are specific triggers eg flying, public speaking etc.

Anxiety doesn’t have to be severe to prevent you living the life you desire. Even mild anxiety can be a roadblock to success in both your personal and working life. Anxiety can make the difference between passing or failing an exam or being successful or unsuccessful in an interview. Anxiety can control your life, or you can learn how to control it.

WHAT’S COOKING Hot Cross Muffins

• Easy • Makes 12 • Time 45 mins

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

135g dried cranberries 1 cup currants 2 1/2 cups self-raising flour 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2/3 cup sunflower oil 1 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 200g caster sugar, plus extra 2 tablespoons 80g icing sugar 1 tsp lemon juice

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Grease a 12-hole muffin tray and line with paper cases.

2. Soak dried fruit in just enough boiling water to cover for 10 minutes.

Drain well, then pat dry with paper towel.

3. Sift the flour, soda and spices into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugar until combined.

Add to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the fruit.

Divide the mixture among muffin cases, then bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.

4. Meanwhile, place the extra 2 tablespoons sugar in a pan with 2 tablespoons water and simmer over low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Brush the glaze over the muffins.

5. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add lemon juice and just enough hot water to make a thick, pipable icing. Use a piping bag or drizzle from a spoon to draw a cross on each muffin, then serve.

Method 1. Line a 900g loaf tin with two layers of clingfilm, leaving excess hanging over the sides.

2. Put the chocolates and butter into a large, microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30sec bursts until melted and smooth. Stir in the syrup, fruit and nuts. Next, carefully fold in the shortbread. Spoon mixture into the prepared tin, scatter over the mini eggs and freeze for 2hr or chill in the fridge until set (about 5hrs).

Using Gearing to Create Wealth After a period of conservative investment based around term deposits and cash based investments, confidence is returning and investor’s mindsets are starting to switch to more aggressive asset classes and more aggressive strategies. One of these strategies is gearing.

Gearing is essentially borrowing to invest. This enhances exposure to the investment and magnifies both gains and losses.

The most common gearing strategy is through an investment property, but it is also possible to gear into the share markets with products such as margin loans and other geared products.

Gearing presents the opportunity to accelerate the wealth creation process, but as an aggressive strategy it also carries a high level of risk. To be effective, it is necessary to invest into growth assets, usually property or shares. These assets have the highest average returns, but also on average carry the highest level of volatility. Borrowing to increase exposure to these assets presents the opportunities to have profits greatly enhanced, but volatility is also enhanced. It is necessary to have an extremely long investment horizon and investors need a high tolerance to risk. It is even more important than normal not to be forced to sell at the bottom of the market.

Furthermore, it is necessary to have surplus income to meet ongoing borrowing costs. This income needs to be secure; ensuring the commitment to the geared investment can be maintained long term.

All borrowing costs are tax deductible. The nature of growth assets see that the bulk of return in capital gain and usually the assets are maintained for more than 12 months. This means that usually gearing is a tax effective wealth creation strategy.

This example demonstrates the power of gearing, illustrating that by borrowing funds and increasing exposure to an investment dramatically increases the return on investment.

Easter is a great time for the E human members of the family, h but b the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four c legged friends. Chocolate contains l theobromine and caffeine, which t when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: â&#x20AC;˘ Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s schoolbags!

Jordan Springs Resident Group A volunteer not for profit group of residents has been set up in Jordan Springs to work with all residents and stakeholders (ie, shopping centre, individual shops, cafeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, developers, etc) to help bring about a positive result for matters impacting on all residents in Jordan Springs.
