Penrith City Council is pleased to announce the release of its Affordable Housing Strategy and Action Plan for public review and input. This innovative strategy outlines Council's commitment to addressing the pressing issue of affordable housing within the community.

Building on recent planning initiatives including the Affordable Rental Housing Contributions Scheme for Glenmore Park Stage 3 and Orchard Hills North. the Draft Affordable Housing Strategy and Action Plan form a comprehensive approach, that addresses both supply and diversity of affordable housing as well as support for the housing and homelessness sectors.

The draft Affordable Housing Strategy and Action Plan is a result of collaborative efforts involving local stakeholders, community advocates, housing experts, and council. The strategy recognises that all residents of Penrith will benefit from access to housing that is affordable and meets their needs.

Key objectives of the strategy:

• increase the availability and diversity of affordable housing

• support innovative housing solutions that cater to diverse demographic needs;

• support a strong and robust housing, homelessness and community services sector; and

• collaborate with public and private partners to leverage resources for housing projects.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said that access to affordable housing has become increasingly difficult across the country and in the Penrith LGA over the last few years.

"We firmly believe that the creation of affordable housing is a shared responsibility, and community input is invaluable in shaping the direction of this strategy,” Cr Hitchen said.

“I urge all residents to take part in this opportunity to make a positive impact on the future of affordable housing in our city.”

How to Participate:

Elvis Presley is loved and adored the world over. Glenmore Park’s Jim Porter has been the President of the Elvis Presley Fan Club of Australasia for over 30 years and is a lifelong fan of ‘The King’.

The Elvis Presley Fan Club of Australasia was started in 1971. Mr Porter became the President in 1991 and has now run the Fan Club for just over 32 years. The Club currently has close to 1,000 members, showing that it is not only one of the most popular in the country, but one of the longest established fan clubs in Australia.

“My motivation for taking on the role of Club President and running the Club came from me wanting to give back for all the joy that Elvis had given me since I was a youngster” explained Jim to the Glenmore Gazette.

Jim is responsible for memberships, financial decisions, the club quarterly newsletter, arranging functions, get togethers, dances and tours. He is the Tour Manager for the overseas trips.

The Elvis Presley Tour of the USA departs this month, on the 12th of October and is arranged by ACE Radio Network and Travelrite. The 19 night tour will visit New Orleans, Lafeyette, Tupelo (Elvis’ birthplace), Memphis, Branson, Nashville, and Las Vegas. It covers not only Elvis, but a number of different music types along the way. Next year’s October tour, which is currently in planning, will substitute Branson with Pigeon Forge and Dollywood.

Despite being more than four decades since Elvis’ death in 1977, Jim believes his popularity is due to his many music genres and fans of all ages.

“The good thing about Elvis is that he covers a large number of music types and age groups. Everything from Rock ‘N’ Roll to Country, Gospel and more” he smiled.

So, what is Jim’s favourite Elvis Presley song you may ask?

“Well, I don’t really have a favourite song as such. I equally like a large number of the 731 tracks he recorded. However, I do have a favourite era and that would be the 50’s and 60’s” Jim ended.

A Gracious Spirit

We can be extremely hard on ourselves when things go wrong or there is conflict. We can give ourselves the disadvantage and wallow in blame and condemnation. This negativity can sink our boat or at best, drain away our joy. We can sometimes be gracious in our spirit in dealing with others involved in a conflict or wrongdoing, but not with ourselves. Is this true or is it just the reverse?

Either way, if we are not gracious in our spirit, we perpetuate what is hurtful to us and others – things like blame, condemnation, guilt, shame, anger, and fear. We should seek to be gracious in our spirit for the sake of healing relationships and reconciling people, because this makes our lives and our world better.

I have realised that the quality of my wife’s life – whether it is a happy, fruitful, and free life – is in some way in my hands. God gives us the power to make or break the lives of others with our words, actions, and the nature of our spirit toward them. Can we forgive? A gracious spirit gives gifts that can heal and liberate a life.

The Bible teaches that God is fiercely opposed to injustice, because it hurts people. God is also committed to making our lives thrive, and for this reason, will forgive us when we genuinely ask for forgiveness, even when what we have done is unjust and reflects the evil that hurts our world.

Realising that we too can be part of this evil should inspire a gracious spirit in us in dealing with the injustices of others towards us. Having a gracious spirit toward others also releases us from unhealthy emotions like anger, that can keep hurting our lives long after those people did what they did to hurt us.

“An eye for an eye and soon the whole world will be blind.” But a gracious spirit addresses hurt and makes our souls, our relationships, and our world better.

I wonder what life would be like without mirrors and cameras. Cameras are relatively recent inventions, with the first camera that made a permanent image being made in the 1820s, just two hundred years ago! Mirrors extend back thousands of years, but they were small and made from polished stone.

In the mythological story of Narcissus, he falls in love with himself when he sees his image in a pool of water. It could have been possible for thousands of years that the only way a person might have seen themselves was in a similar way. People could have easily gone their whole lives without seeing an image of themselves.

How things are different today! Instead of others being the only ones who can help us with our appearance, it is easy to obsess over our own image, particularly our faces. While you can see the rest of your body, our faces are difficult to look at!

The proliferation of images of ourselves makes us much more aware of our image than we might be. As a result, it is easy to be self-obsessed and caught up in what we look like. The Bible teaches that, as human beings, we are each made in the image of God and that we are made for God and for each other.

Real life isn’t found in obsessing about ourselves, but the secure knowledge that God loves us and that we are to love others.

Local resident Linda Christie may just have the answer for you, after creating Glenmore Park Gardeners in 2021. The social media group can be found on Facebook and has over 500 members.

“The group has been welcomed positively. They share ideas, questions and answers, events, local nurseries, plant swaps and sales and updates on garden their progress” said Linda to the Glenmore Gazette.

“Members are encouraging, respectful and keen to help one another with tips and tricks” she continued.

Linda is excited for the future and can’t wait to see the group continuing to grow. “We look forward to seeing greater engagement. Nurseries sharing tips, open gardens and even meet ups, in time, would be amazing” Linda stated. So, what gardening tips for Spring does she have to share?

“We haven’t had much rain, so ensuring that water is up to the plants along with feeding will see them in good standing for a likely warm Summer.

“I’m sure we’ll see those glorious Glenmore Park lawns get some top dressing in the coming weeks too” she ended.

Children Inspire Mum to Create Skincare Range

Local Mum Tracy Amituanai has created Grow ‘n’ Glow Skincare, a range of skincare with her own children in mind.

Embarking on the journey of starting her business just over a year ago, the origin of Grow ‘n’ Glow Skincare was rooted in her unwavering commitment as a devoted mother, determined to cultivate impeccable skincare routines from an early age.

“Witnessing a gap in the market for products tailored specifically for young individuals, I began with a mission in mind: to streamline skincare for the younger generation. Our clean, three-step regimen is designed to not only simplify, but also instil confidence and healthy habits from the outset” explained Tracy.

“As a parent, I understand the challenge of finding products with naturally derived ingredients that are gentle on sensitive skin. My own children, who are active in sports and constantly exposed to the elements, inspired me to create a solution. By embracing this straightforward approach, you’re ensuring that your young person’s complexion receives the care it deserves, enabling it to thrive at its full potential” she continued.

Grow ‘n’ Glow Skincare provides a targeted 3-step routine for an elevated skincare regime, consisting of: Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturiser.

“What I enjoy most about running Grow ‘n’ Glow Skincare for young individual’s skincare business is the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of young people. Seeing them gain confidence and develop healthy skincare habits from an early age is incredibly rewarding.

“Additionally, creating products with naturally derived ingredients that are gentle on sensitive skin gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment. Knowing that I am providing a solution for active, outdoor-loving kids brings me great satisfaction” Tracey smiled.

The inspiring Glenmore Park resident has this message for any local mums wanting to start their own business, “Prioritise passion, plan meticulously, and seek support. Trust your instincts, stay resilient, and embrace learning opportunities. Remember, every small step counts toward success. You’ve got this!”

Online Safety for Kids

As parents and caregivers, our concern for children’s online safety is paramount. To protect them effectively, we must actively engage with and understand their digital world. Open communication from early years through adolescence can reduce online risks.

Common Online Risks

Depending on your child’s age and internet usage, risks may include:

Excessive Screen Time: One of the primary concerns for caregivers is the amount of time children spend online. Current guidelines recommend specific limits based on age.

• For children under 2 years old, it’s recommended to avoid any screen time other than video chat.

• Between the ages of 2 and 5, limit screen time to no more than 1 hour per day.

• For children and adolescents aged 5 to 17, the recommended limit is no more than 2 hours a day, excluding schoolrelated work.

Online Gaming: Online gaming can become addictive and impact other areas of a child’s life if not monitored.

Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying, comprising of hurtful messages, posts, and images, that are sent directly to the young person or shared online. This can impact young victims mentally and physically.

Child Grooming: Child grooming involves adults posing as peers, establishing trust with minors, and leading to potential sexual abuse. According to e-safety research, 38% of young people chat to strangers online, and while most interactions are harmless, caregivers need to be aware of the risk.

Sexting: Sexting, common among youth, can turn problematic when coerced, shared without consent, or used for control. Both males and females are equally at risk of being victims here. It’s important to note that once an image is sent, it can be lost forever in cyberspace.

Exposure to Online Pornography: Children may inadvertently come across explicit content, affecting their development.

Practical Steps for Caregivers

Open Communication: Engage in online activities with young children and maintain conversations about their online experiences and safety.

Set Boundaries: Establish clear rules on where and when kids can access the internet, favouring communal spaces. Agree on Rules: Discuss age-appropriate time limits and consequences for device usage. Create agreements together when possible.

Provide Support: Foster a safe environment where children can seek help when facing online threats or issues.

Use Parental Controls: Utilise built-in controls in devices and apps to monitor and restrict online access. Today, children enjoy the digital world for fun, education, and connection. While it can be enjoyable, parents must remain vigilant, set boundaries, and support their children. For more resources, visit: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents

A Strong Footballing Community

Penrith Physie Wakes Up with Today

Penrith Physical Culture Club have put Glenmore Park on the map, after appearing on the Today Show on Channel 9 last month.

The local club was live streamed on Friday 8th September during the weather forecasts with Tim Davies, from the Glenmore Park Youth and Community Centre where they hold their classes for their Junior Girls on Mondays and Tuesdays. The show was broadcast from 5:30am to 8:30am and they had 40 of their members, including Tiny Tots enjoying the experience.

They entered a Community Sport Competition on The Today Show to win money to help support the fundraising goals of their club. The producer of the program saw their entry and thought that they would be the perfect group to appear on the show.

“All the girls were very excited to be on the show. We really didn’t know what to expect but were prepared to show Australia how Physie develops strong, independent, and confident young women. They were interviewed by Tim Davies, taught him one of their routines, danced and had fun” said Karen Allan of Penrith Physical Culture Club.

“We have twins in the club who also helped Tim with the weather forecast. He spent a lot of time talking to our members and their families who also got involved” she added.

The experience was one that the local group will not forget.

Glenmore Park Football Club have just completed an outstanding season, showing why they are one of the strongest clubs in the local competition.

This season, they had 1,277 members that made up 97 teams from the Under 5’s through to the Over 45’s. The 1,277 members consisted of Coaches, Managers and 1,074 players, of which 245 were female players.

The club had many highlights, with success on the pitch spread across all ages.

“This year, we had 6 teams that made the grand final. Two teams, the Under 12’s Girls Division 1 and Waratah Reserves, won their grand finals and were premiers.

“We had 14 female only teams playing in female only competitions, from the Under 8’s through to All Age Women.

“The junior presentation was also a fantastic day for the club. There was over 2,000 people that attended throughout the day, enjoying the BBQ and all the various rides. A great way to celebrate the end of the season” explained Rob Mooney, Secretary of Glenmore Park Football Club.

Rob and his fellow committee members were excited to see a full season of soccer played, without the disruptions that have been had in recent times.

“This has been our first season since 2020 that has been completed without interruptions. Dealing with COVID in 2020 and 2021, then the weather impacts in 2022, it has been great seeing everyone play each week” he explained.

The club will look to capitalise on the recent success and popularity of the Australian Matildas at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, with female player numbers looking to grow.

“Hopefully we will see the increase in female participation across all ages and be able to offer more female only competitions in the younger age groups” Rob stated.

The club would like to thank everyone who came together to help contribute to an amazing season.

“I would like to thank all the committee members, coaches, managers, and people who volunteered their time on the various duties to make this another exceptional season” he concluded.

r Waratah Reserves grand final winners | Image: Leah Lownds

“It was a wonderful experience. I am so proud of the club that we have built, the friendships that have been forged, and the dedication of our members to Penrith Physie. I am so grateful to Channel 9 and the Today Show for giving us this opportunity” Karen reflected.

Penrith Physie will be celebrating 30 years in 2024. They are proud to be a part of the BJP Association, which is the original style of Physical Culture, operating for 130 years providing classes for women and girls across Australia. Enhance Hearing

Hearing health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, yet it often goes overlooked until problems arise. Our ability to hear connects us to the world around us, allowing us to communicate, enjoy music, appreciate nature, and partake in countless everyday activities. In Australia about 3.6 million people have some level of hearing loss or hearing condition that could have been prevented and more than 1 in 3 Australians have noiserelated ear damage. As Australia’s population ages, we expect the number of people with a hearing impairment to double to an estimated 7.8 million people in 2060. Effective communication is fundamental in personal and professional relationships. Hearing impairment can lead to social isolation, and decreased quality of life. Recent studies suggest a strong connection between hearing loss and cognitive decline, including an increased risk of conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Maintaining good hearing health can contribute to a happier and more fulfilling life.

We are proud to introduce Enhance Hearing. Your local, independent, and family-owned service provider in hearing health and well-being. Our mission is simple: to provide comprehensive hearing care and support to the Glenmore Park community.

At Enhance Hearing, we offer a range of services to cater to your hearing needs, including:

• Micro suction Wax removal

• Free hearing aid trial

You will meet us: Mrs Johanna Rai and Mrs Sheeja Govindan, owners of Enhance Hearing with over 40 years of Audiology experience at the clinic.

We offer free hearing health checks, which take only 10 minutes of your time. Come meet us and join us in prioritizing your hearing health and improving your quality of life. Together, let’s ensure that the sounds of our world continue to bring joy and connection to us all.

A Discussion on Types of Foot Orthoses

Orthoses (aka orthotic devices) are medical devices inserted into shoes that support the foot, improve function and/or protect structures*.

What are the different types of orthoses prescribed by podiatrists?

• Cushioning insoles – while not technically orthoses, these are good for offloading high pressure areas where additional support is not required.

• Prefabricated – these are orthoses in ready-made sizes that can provide moderate support.

• Customised prefabricated – these are prefabricated orthoses that have been modified by a podiatrist to provide additional or different support. For example, additional wedging or domes can be added, or material ground away to modify the support.

• Custom-made – these are moulded specifically for the feet and are the best option for patients requiring optimal support, patients who have complex biomechanical issues, or require a more durable and longer-lasting option. How do I know which orthoses will benefit me?

The best way to know if orthoses will be beneficial is to see a podiatrist who can perform a biomechanical assessment and determine the cause of the issue. The podiatrist will then discuss the best treatment options for the condition, and if orthoses is indicated, they can discuss which orthoses are more appropriate to treat the condition. The chemist or shoe store sells pre-fabricated orthoses and insoles a lot cheaper. What is the difference?

If they happen to be the correct prescription, it is possible to get some relief from these products. In general, they tend to provide less support or are made from less durable materials that will collapse a lot faster than the more expensive prefabricated orthoses sold by podiatrists. Do I need to pay thousands of dollars for a series of arch supports to fix my pain?

Please beware! There are many charlatans out there with no medical training claiming to be able to miraculously fix your pain. They are usually found peddling their generic, inferior products in shopping centre or cruise ship kiosks, and can often cause more problems than they solve for a greater price than you would pay for proper medical advice.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT Grow Cafe

Shop 1/30/32 Leonay Parade, Leonay

Michelle and I had an exceptional lunch at Grow Cafe in Emu Plains. It was my first time visiting this venue and it did not disappoint. Carmen and her team provided us with outstanding service.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Carmen and her team, who were very welcoming. I knew from the warm welcome we received that our lunch would be enjoyable.

After looking at the menu, I decided to settle on the Big Breakfast. This Big Breakfast was filling and had plenty of flavour. It consisted of two FreeRange Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Chorizo Sausage, housemade Potato Rosti, Garlic Butter Mushrooms, Grilled Tomatoes, along with 2 pieces of Buttered Toast.

The careful preparation was evident in each element – the eggs were perfectly cooked, the bacon was wonderfully crispy, the chorizo added a spicy kick, the potato rosti was satisfyingly hearty, and the garlic butter mushrooms lent a rich and savoury touch. The addition of buttered toast was a comforting accompaniment that rounded off the meal. This breakfast truly offered a delightful assortment of textures and flavours. What made it special was the handmade potato rosti.

Michelle chose the Southern Style Chicken Wrap which consisted of Fried Chicken, Red Onion, Cheese, Tomato, Spinach, Chipotle Sauce, and a serve of Chips. She really enjoyed her wrap and said that it was full of flavour and very filling.

I was also very keen to try a glass of freshly squeezed Orange Juice. The juice was sweet, very refreshing, full of flavour, and highly recommended.

I tried a Flat White Coffee, which was creamy, had plenty of flavour, and not bitter at all.

Grow Cafe are allergy and vegan friendly, taking dietary requirements very seriously.

I give Grow Café a ten out of ten. Thanks to Carmen and her team for looking after us.

Little A’s Returns

Emu Plains Little Athletics Club are ready to fire for the 2023/24 season and have just taken to the track for the new year.

The local club is looking forward to having a successful season ahead, after the disappointment of the pandemic and bad weather that has impeded previous years’ competition.

Registrations are now open and will remain open until the end of the year. The competition began on Friday 29th September, and runs through until 8th March 2024.

With Emu Plains being one of the biggest clubs in the area, they anticipate that they could have 400 plus athletes this season.

They will be running their popular Tiny Tots program (3 and 4 years) and competition for Under 6’s to Under 17’s. Tiny Tots

HEALTH MATTERS

registrations are $100 and $150 for all other ages. Active Kids Vouchers are also welcome. Competition is held every Friday evening during Summer at Leonay Oval.

This season, they welcome a new President, with Paul Dukes taking over from Grant Haydon.

“The last few seasons have been somewhat disrupted by COVID and weather, so we are looking forward to having some great weather, lots of new members and most of all, having fun” explained Paul to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

To register for the new season, use the Gameday portal link on the Emu Plains Little Athletics Club website or the NSW Little Athletics website.

For more information and regular updates, visit the Club’s website at www.emuplainslac.org.au. You can also find them on Facebook and Instagram.

“Our website and Facebook are the best source. We have great involvement and commitment from our overall committee, so there are always informative updates on these two sources” he added. Come and join them for some Summer fun!

Does Eating Fermented Milk Products like Yoghurt Help Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Patients?

Medical researchers conducted two small placebo-controlled human trials, to look at the benefits of fermented milk yoghurt for UC patients.

The first trial looked at 20 UC patients whose symptoms had been brought under control using standard treatments.

Taking yoghurt daily for 1 year allowed most patients to remain symptom free. Most patients not taking yoghurt had relapses. For patients who did relapse, if the patient was taking yogurt, they generally had only one relapse. Patients not taking yoghurt had two or more. So, eating daily yoghurt worked, in preventing relapse in most patients, and in significantly reducing the number of relapses if relapse did occur.

In a second (12 week) trial, researchers looked at 20 UC patients whose symptoms had initially been controlled using standard treatments, but in whom UC symptoms returned, while on medication.

Patients were kept on standard medications - mesalazine or salazosulphapyridine, and then given either placebo, or a milk yoghurt made using 3 bacteria - Bifidobacterium (breve & bifidum) and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

After 12 weeks, patients in the group receiving yoghurt were more likely to:

1. have symptom improvement, or

2. be completely symptom free,

and their bowel walls tended to look much more healed when viewed by endoscope, and much less injured when bowel-tissue samples were viewed by microscope.

Finally, those eating daily yoghurt showed marked increases in small fatty acids content in stool. Small fatty acids (such as butyrate and propionate) help heal the bowel. Butyrate is the main energy source for the cells lining the colon, and it also reduces bowel inflammation caused by the immune system. In this way butyrate helps heal the bowel. No increases in small fatty acids were seen in the placebo group.

The researcher then noted that adding prebiotic foods would further help normalise bowel bacteria composition, likely making yogurt treatment even more effective, i.e., a more wholistic approach, leads to a more effective treatment.

Celebrate at Home Rather Than in a Vet Emergency Waiting Room

With warmer weather arriving, it’s time to dust off the BBQ and spend extra time gathering with friends and family outdoors. As we prepare, remember that it is important to check where your pets may be hiding – most likely under the table waiting for the food and snacks to drop.

While party food is appropriate for people, that doesn’t automatically mean that it’s also safe for your pets. In fact, when you have a BBQ or picnic, you need to keep a very close eye on what foods are within reach of your dog. Many foods are not only bad for your dog’s digestive system, but they can even be deadly for him to eat.

Here are a few common BBQ and party foods that are dangerous for dogs.

Ribs and Other Cooked Meat Bones:

While it’s tempting for many people to give cooked bones to dogs, it can have its problems. Cooked chicken bones and rib bones can splinter very easily, becoming lodged in a dog’s throat or digestive tract. Bone fragments can also become lodged in the small intestines, causing a complete intestinal blockage. If bone fragments travel down the gastrointestinal tract and reach the large bowel, they may collect and cause constipation. This is painful for dogs, as the bone fragments scrape the lining of the colon and rectum and lead to significant trauma.

Onions:

Onions add flavour and can often be found in many party foods. All members of the onion family, including shallots and garlic, are toxic to dogs. Although not as toxic as grapes or xylitol, avoid giving onions to your dog, regardless of if they are raw or cooked. Cooking onions doesn’t have an impact on the safety of onions, and cooked onions are still poisonous to dogs because of their toxic effect on red blood cells. All forms of onion can be toxic to dogs — whether powdered, dried, fresh, or cooked.

Potato Chips and Pretzels:

These may seem like simple snack foods, but in reality, pretzels and chips are loaded with sodium, which isn’t good for dogs. Too much of either of these snack foods can upset a dog’s stomach, as well as cause excessive thirst and urination. In severe circumstances, it can result in vomiting, tremors, diarrhoea, seizures, and fever. Discourage your guests or other partygoers from the temptation of feeding these snacks to dogs.

Chocolate Desserts:

Desserts are everyone’s favourite part of the BBQ, but they can be deadly for dogs especially if they involve chocolate, xylitol, or alcohol. The compounds in both chocolate and xylitol can be fatal to dogs. The symptoms of chocolate poisoning include seizures, heart arrhythmias, and muscle tremors. Within thirty minutes of ingestion, xylitol will cause a fast, dangerous drop in blood sugar levels accompanied by disorientation and seizures. Some dogs can even develop liver failure, which may lead to death.

Fruit Salad with Grapes:

Some fruits are perfectly fine for dogs to eat in moderation, but grapes are not one of them. If you include grapes in fruit salads or desserts, make sure your dog cannot eat them. Grapes cause kidney failure in dogs and can cause lethargy, diarrhoea, and vomiting around twelve hours after ingestion. The dog will become increasingly dehydrated, may refuse to eat, and will

show either an increase or decrease in urination. Long-term kidney disease or death follows.

This time of year is always full of fun with friends and food. Keep your dog safely locked away, especially on the weekend that we will hopefully be celebrating a Panthers victory!

A celebration at home is much more relaxing than being in a Vet Emergency waiting room.
