Chemical Cleanout Returns in May

Penrith City Council is pleased to announce the return of its popular annual Chemical Cleanout event on Saturday 4 May and Sunday 5 May from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Residents are encouraged to participate by safely disposing of their outdated and unused chemicals at The Kingsway Playing Fields car park in Werrington.

This event has become a cornerstone of the community’s waste calendar, providing an opportunity for residents to responsibly dispose of various items, including old car batteries, garden chemicals, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and tubes, gas bottles, motor oils, paints and related products, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, and household cleaners.

“In Penrith, we take our environmental responsibility seriously,” Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said. “The Chemical CleanOut event is an opportunity for residents to demonstrate their commitment to protecting our community and environment by disposing of chemical waste responsibly.”

“Household chemicals and other forms of chemical waste must be handled and disposed of safely to prevent environmental contamination and harm to wildlife. These items cannot be placed in household bins, as they pose risks to our garbage collectors and can contribute to fires.”

Many of the chemical items collected during this event are recycled or reused, contributing to Penrith’s broader resource recovery efforts. Cr Carney says that by participating in the Chemical CleanOut, residents not only ensure safe disposal but also contribute to a more sustainable future.

“I applaud Penrith’s ongoing dedication to recycling problem waste, particularly chemical waste. It’s more important than ever to ensure that hazardous waste is disposed of correctly to protect both our community and the environment.”

Residents are encouraged to participate by following these simple steps:

• Label Your Chemical Waste: Clearly mark each type of chemical waste for proper identification.

• Pack Safely: Securely pack items into the trunk of your car or trailer.

• Bring to The Kingsway Playing Fields: Head down to the event location on the specified dates.

• Stay in Your Vehicle: Friendly staff will unload items without requiring residents to exit their vehicles.

• Seal and Label: Ensure all items are tightly sealed and labelled to aid in recovery efforts.

For more information about the Chemical Cleanout weekend and a list of accepted items, visit penrith.city/chemicalcleanout.

For residents unable to attend the Chemical CleanOut weekend, Council encourages them to utilize the Penrith Community Recycling Centre at Gate 3, 96 Dunheved Circuit, St Marys, for free recycling. Please visit penrith.city/CRC to verify which items are accepted.

Additionally, fluorescent light bulbs and household batteries can be dropped off at small CRC stations at Council’s libraries in Penrith, St Marys, and St Clair. For safety, please tape battery terminals before disposal.

Mother’s Day – More Than Cold Tea and Toast

The tradition of Mothering Sunday began in the Middle Ages, when the custom of allowing those who had moved away from home to work, could visit their home parishes and mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The modern version, Mother’s Day, is held in Australia on the second Sunday of May each year.

As Mother’s Day looms for another year, many of us spend some time thinking about our mothers, while the mothers among us spend time wondering how our own performance as mothers is panning out, and crucially, how it will be judged into the future.

One thing is clear to mothers of all ages and eras: mothering is challenging and demanding work. It never ends, and every decision will be held up for scrutiny for years to come. Who among us ever made a good decision wandering around the house looking for scissors to cut some knots out of your hair because you haven’t brushed it for weeks, the baby refuses to sleep, and you haven’t had a shower in 3 days?

And so, as Sunday 12 May rolls around, we stop to think about our mothers and the sacrifices they made - and continue to make for us. It is a time to show them that we appreciate them, because as sure as your mum told you to enjoy the time while your baby is little, our mums grow older as we are busy with life, and before we know it, they are gone forever.

We buy them chocolates, take them out for dinner, we get Grandma some new slippers, and sometimes we get a breakfast in bed of warm tea and cold toast. When I think back over the Mothers Days that I have been lucky enough to enjoy with my daughter, the one that stands out is the lukewarm tea and gift from the Mother’s Day stall at school. It takes me straight back to a little room in a hostel with two beds jammed in, everything we owned in a cupboard in the corner, and every night her little warm arms hugging me goodnight.

I would not have missed it for all the knots in my hair.

When Things Move, Find a Rock to Stand On

The recent fatal attacks in Bondi Junction and Wakeley leave me with a sense of how fragile life can be. For peace and security, we need to find something stable we can stand on when everything else seems to be unsure, changing, and shifting around us.

The reality is that relationships change, as well as our age, our health, our income, our reputation, and the way we feel about ourselves and the things around us. If enough of the important things in our lives move under our feet, we can find our souls struggling.

To remain standing, we need to find something sure and stable to put our feet on.

I think the biggest problem for us can be a lack of clarity about what is shifting and will change, over what is solid, unchanging, certain, and therefore safe to stand on.

When we fool ourselves into believing our circumstances don’t change, we can set our souls up for a lack of peace. Now usually we argue in our minds that circumstances shouldn’t change, or we believe that they just can’t change because we really don’t want them to. However, this will throw our souls into turmoil, because things around us always move and change. Circumstances are like the surging sea. There is little that is certain about how people will treat us, how this or that will turn out, how we will cope when something happens, or even how long we (or someone we love) will live.

The Bible promises that God’s love, his intention, and his action to protect our wellbeing come what may, is solid: we can stand on it, lean on it, depend on it, and plan on it. When everything else is swirling and we lose our footing, we can find our footing again in God. In this sense the Bible often describes God or Jesus as a Rock.

Ask him to be your Rock in the midst of whatever is moving under your feet.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Always Help, Never Hurt

While raising my four boys, I often shared a simple lesson that I thought was important for them: “boys use their muscles to help girls”. While they got in trouble for hitting or fighting each other, they got into bigger trouble if they ever spoke unkindly to, or were violent towards their mother or sisters. The consequence was the removal of any TV for a very long period of time! They knew it was expected of them to always help, and never to hurt. I also knew that it was up to me to set an example of what that looked like.

Jesus calls on us to love others, particularly for husbands to protect, cherish and be loyal to their wives. The Apostle Paul says this in Colossians 3:19, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.” This verse points us in the direction of loving and respectful relationships of men towards women. The Bible elevates the God-given dignity of women and condemns any form of violence or exploitation against them.

Violence against women is a blight on our society. Each week there are partners who are killed, women who are attacked because they are vulnerable, and untold smaller interactions which harm women. This is a departure from the love and compassion exemplified by Jesus Christ. There is something deeply evil and contrary to God’s good design when a man is violent towards women.

We need men who are guardians of the vulnerable and who “use their muscles” to love and serve their women, not to harm them.

1800RESPECT is available for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support people impacted by domestic, family or sexual violence.

Tanya Davies MP, Member for Badgerys Creek, hosted a morning tea recently, to celebrate the 2024 Badgerys Creek Local Woman of the Year, Leisa McGivern OAM.

Leisa, of Glenmore Park, was awarded the honour by Mrs Davies in recognition of her extraordinary service to children as a foster carer over the last 24 years, in which she has fostered more than 60 children, many of whom she is still in contact with.

Mrs Davies stated, “I’m so proud to celebrate and commend a woman of Leisa’s character and values. She has provided babies and children a safe and loving home and a wonderful start to life.”

In attendance at the morning tea was Leisa’s daughter Amanda McGivern, who stated that her mother “has the biggest heart.”

There’s a lot of support for anyone wanting to consider foster caring through agencies and Non-Government Organisations such as Anglicare.”

Leisa shared that she believes that every child needs ‘love to grow’. She stated, “my role is to make sure that these children have a safe, loving home, whilst awaiting their ‘forever family’.

Leisa is also a mother to her own 5 children.

True to her nature, Leisa encourages anyone curious about caring to look into it. “There are plenty of children in need of a place to stay,” she stated.

One of the organisations Leisa recommended to those looking to assist, and to those requiring assistance, is Anglicare Telopea, which can be contacted on 02 9890 6800.

The eagerly awaited pedestrian pathway on Nepean Avenue is a step closer, after Penrith City Council appointed a contractor to progress the project through the final stages.

Axial Constructions Pty Ltd were awarded the detailed design and construction contract after a competitive tender process, with their experience delivering similar projects and local knowledge playing a significant role in their selection.

A detailed design is now being prepared by Axial Constructions, with this work to be informed by the community feedback received during consultation last year. Construction is expected to start by mid- 2024.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said it’s exciting to see this project progressing, knowing the benefits it will bring to the community.

“Not only will we see significant improvements to pedestrian safety with the delivery of this new pathway, but the missing link on the popular ‘Bridge to Bridge’ loop of the Great River Walk will also finally be realised,” Cr Carney.

“Council is looking forward to working closely with Axial Constructions to finalise the design and ensure the smooth delivery of this project for Nepean Avenue residents and regular users of the Great River Walk.”

The new pathway will be built on the western side of Nepean Avenue, between Memorial Avenue and Tench Reserve, within the existing road verge. The path will feature a stamped concrete buffer and lighting bollards to separate pedestrians from passing traffic.

The project will also see Nepean Avenue transformed into a two-way quietway, with a lower speed limit and traffic calming paver bands to create a safer environment for cyclists, and all road users.

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Penrith City Council. Council secured a $1.25 million grant under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program, and a further $2.5 million is allocated from Council’s District Open Space Contributions Plan.

Caroline Chisholm College Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Caroline Chisholm College are very excited as a college learning community to be celebrating their 50th year in 2024.

The college started in 1974, with only 34 students who formed the pioneer year with the Catholic Parish Community of St Nicholas of Myra Penrith, driving the need for an all-girls school for the Greater Penrith region. Fr John Grady advocated for the school, and land was purchased at Regentville, at the time which was then a bush setting.

In the first year, the college commenced as a learning community in the St Joseph’s convent in Evan Street in Penrith, whilst the first building was erected. Later that same year, the staff and students went to the site at Regentville, which is of course the current school site, now known as Glenmore Park.

Since this time, the college has grown immensely and is now a Year 7-12 college, with approximately 1,150 students. Caroline Chisholm has always been a place of high quality learning, based on the charism of the college patron Caroline Chisholm, who was called to assist young women and children in particular who were marginalised, experiencing poverty, and requiring shelter.

The college motto that was formulated in the first years of the college is courage, tolerance, and faith, as the key values that still live on today in the college community through their everyday words and actions that model their Catholic faith. Today, the college is known for its high expectations for quality learning for young women, the faith life of the college and the social justice initiatives that they embrace wholeheartedly.

In this 50th year, they are celebrating on Saturday 18th May. This is with a community day for current and past staff and students to join together at the college and celebrate with college tours, a BBQ, college creative arts performances, official cake cutting and much more! They hope that their college alumni will be earmarking this date and gathering friends to enjoy the Chisholm spirit together, on this very special occasion. As well as this, they will be enjoying a cocktail function later in the year, on Saturday 19th October to conclude this wonderful, momentous year.

Embracing Mindfulness: A Parent’s Guide to Being Present With Their Children.

You may have heard the term mindfulness in relation to personal wellbeing, but have you considered mindful parenting? So, what is mindfulness and how do you include it in the everyday hustle?

Mindfulness in a Nutshell

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the here and now, without judgement or distraction. Paying deliberate attention to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment, without getting caught up in it. Mindfulness can be practiced in the everyday by mindful eating, mindful walking, or simply paying attention to the task at hand like washing dishes. The trick is to tune into your thoughts, feelings, body, and surroundings. Have you ever just stopped to think about the sun on your face or the sounds of the birds, as go for a walk?

Benefits of Mindfulness

The benefits include reduced stress, improved emotional regulation and sleep, enhanced parent-child relationships, better decision-making abilities, increased empathy and compassion, and increased focus and attention.

Mindful parenting creates increased family harmony, emotional resilience in children, and deeper connections and understanding within the family.

Meditation as a tool

Whilst meditation allows you to be present for a set period, the aim of mindfulness is to remember to come back to the present during the day. Regular meditation practice is known to have benefits including changing and rewiring our brains, to more positive emotions and thoughts. Grey matter in the brain has been shown to increase with regular meditation, improving emotion regulation, planning, problem solving, learning, and memory. In addition, the amygdala, which controls fear, anxiety, and stress, reduces in size.

Mindfulness Techniques

Here are several techniques regularly used in meditation or everyday practice that can be used to develop mindfulness:

• Body Scan Meditation: A mental exercise where you scan your body from head to toe, paying attention to tension and discomfort in the body, and gently releasing it.

• Mindful Breathing: Focus on each inhale and exhale, paying attention to the natural rise and fall of the chest and the stomach. Just a few minutes every day is enough to encourage mental clarity and relaxation.

• Mindful eating: Next time to you eat, pause, and think about how the food’s texture, how it smells, looks, and tastes. This is often a fun activity for children.

• Structured meditation: There are many apps and websites with free mediations including Headspace, Calm, Insight, and Peaceful Kids.

Plant a Tree for Mum on Mother’s Day

Penrith’s beloved Trees for Mum event is celebrating seventeen years this Mother’s Day.

Penrith City Council’s annual Trees for Mum community tree planting event returns on Sunday 12 May at Hollier Reserve in Emu Plains.

The event will be divided into 30-minute sessions, with the first session starting at 8:30am and the last session at 12:00pm.

Council’s Bushcare team will be using registration numbers to ensure they have enough trees and tags for participants to plant and write on. Register at penrith.city/events

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney praised the event for its longevity and how it continues to provide the community with an opportunity to remember and celebrate their mum.

“Planting a tree is such a simple gesture to honour your mum, grandmother, aunt, or a mother-figure in your life and can be a very positive and meaningful experience to share with family and friends on Mother’s Day.

“Trees for Mum is not only a great way to gift Mum something special, but it’s an opportunity to learn about our local environment and help restore our endangered bushland by planting native trees or shrubs,” Cr Carney said.

Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. Sunscreen will be available on the day.

The native trees and shrubs available for planting are proudly provided by Council’s nursery.

To ensure there are enough trees for everyone to plant and so the Penrith Council Bushcare team can coordinate the 30-minute sessions, please book your attendance by registering at penrith.city/events

2023 heralded the 25th Anniversary of the local club, with participation numbers showing that the sport is thriving and continuing to grow in the community.

The Summer season would see 28 teams, comprising of about 200 players, represent Glenmore Park at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre in Cambridge Park on Fridays and Saturdays each week.

The hotly contested finals series would unbelievably see a quarter of the club’s teams make their grand finals. This show of strength further demonstrates that they are a force in the competition.

“We are so proud of all our Summer teams at Glenmore Park. The level of competition was very high. We had 7 teams make their Grand Finals” said Kathleen Burke, President of Glenmore Park Basketball Club.

With a season of highs, it was undoubtedly the club’s 25th Anniversary away from the court that was their biggest moment.

“Off the court, the club celebrated it’s 25th Anniversary during the Summer season. We hosted a Gala Day at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. The day featured awards, give aways, rides, and lots of fun!” she explained to the Glenmore Gazette.

The focus now turns the attention towards the 2024 Winter season, with whistles at the ready to blow time on.

“Our numbers remain just as strong for the upcoming Winter competition” smiled Kathleen.

Just as the players make up the heart and soul of the club, so do the volunteers. They invite and welcome any volunteers wanting to join the Glenmore Park family.

“We always need more volunteers. The club is run by a committee of volunteers, as are our coaches and managers. If anyone would like to be involved, we would love to hear from you” she concluded.

Bro Fit Penrith: Building Bodies and Minds

men’s health and wellbeing.

In the bustling heart of Penrith lies a gym with a difference, where pumping iron meets mental resilience, and where strength is not just physical but mental too.

Bro Fit Penrith, nestled at Unit 3, 37-39 York Road, Jamisontown, isn’t just your average fitness centre—it’s a sanctuary for

Founded by Tama and Kristal Te Huna, Bro Fit Penrith is run by Tama and James Te Huna with help from Lawrence Tauasa, Mark Lazare, Danny Denver, and Pio Misa. It is more than just a gym; it’s a vision born from a passion for fitness and a commitment to mental health support.

With three beautiful children in tow, the Te Huna family embarked on the journey to provide a space where positivity reigns, and men can find solace amidst the weights and punching bags.

“We wanted to create a space where our boys, Jamie and Jordan, could train and be around positive role models,” explained Tama and Kristal Te Huna. “But we also saw the pressing need for men’s mental health support in our community. That’s why we merged the idea of a men’s only gym with mental health awareness programs.”

Bro Fit Penrith offers a range of programs catering to all ages and fitness levels. From junior classes focused on strength and conditioning or boxing to adult sessions in the morning and afternoon, there’s something for everyone. But it’s not just about physical fitness; it’s about fostering a supportive environment where men can open up about their mental health struggles without fear of judgment.

“A gym like ours plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of men in the community, by providing a supportive environment for physical fitness, whilst also addressing mental health concerns and fostering a sense of community and belonging,” they stated.

“We host guest speakers who address various topics around men’s mental health, creating a safe space for our members to share and seek support.”

For Tama and the team at Bro Fit Penrith, their mission goes beyond the gym walls. They envision expanding their reach across Australia and even venturing into New Zealand, spreading their message of holistic health and wellbeing.

Since its inception, Bro Fit Penrith has attracted attention from far and wide, with the Penrith Panthers and other wellknown figures gracing its floors. But amidst the celebrity visits and bustling classes, the heart of Bro Fit Penrith remains rooted in its commitment to empowering men to be their best selves, both physically and mentally.

Shoulder to Shoulder: Nepean Men’s Shed

“Men don’t talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder” is the catch cry of the Australian Men’s Shed Association. The Men’s Shed concept first originated in the 1980’s in Broken Hill, but the Albury Manual Activities Centre founded in 1978, seems to be the model for the Men’s Shed.

Maxine Chaseling was the key person behind ‘The Shed’ back in the early nineties and spoke of the stories behind the development of the Shed. The first shed for men, was founded by Chaseling (formerly Maxine Kitto) in 1993. It was in Goolwa in South Australia as part of The Heritage Club, an activities day centre for the older generations, where she was employed as the coordinator.

Nepean Men’s Shed formed in 2014. It was originally known as Lower Mountains Men’s Shed at Mount Riverview, first forming in early 2011. They moved to the Orchard Hills facility in 2016. Currently there are around 120 members, many from Emu Plains and Glenmore Park.

Activities that the group participate in include woodwork, metalwork, toy making, scroll sawing, model and kit making. There are recreational activities including pool, darts, library, and for the tech heads, electronics, fixing computers, laser burning, 3D printing, and amateur radio. For the green fingers, there is gardening, small motor maintenance such as fixing mowers, and lawn edgers.

The Men’s Shed is involved with fundraising barbecues, and market stalls. Some upcoming plans include private orders and community projects.

Nepean Men’s Shed members meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 18 Simeon Road, in Orchard Hills (behind the Penrith Christian School) from 9.00am till 2.00pm.

Men’s Shed members enjoy social interaction with other men, camaraderie, sharing ideas and learning new skills. More information is available on Nepean Men’s Shed Facebook page, or by contacting the President/Secretary on 0419 240180. You can also email: nepeanmshed@gmail.com or simply come in and visit them.

Don’t Let Your ‘Back Scans’ Define You!

One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances, and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture.

I see patients scans and the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many bulging or protruding discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals and nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc. All these are possible causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is vital.

Often what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful re cause of back pain, the preferred treatment, and likely response. In some cases, scans may show a patient’s spine is in excellent condition and thus say little about the cause of their pain.

Sometimes patients come into the clinic having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old, and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of

debility. Often such folk then simply put up with the pain, which is often quite high, even when on multiple medications, when help may be available. This is definitely where you shouldn’t let your back scans define you!

While not every case of back pain will be fixed with manual therapies, and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can often have surprising results. Using specific techniques, we remove inflammatory fluids from back tissues, lengthen back muscles, allowing back tissue function to normalise. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months, depending on the severity of the problem, in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long-standing cases.

If you have a problem with a back injury or back pain and you’d like to know more, call Andreas at BHW on 02 4777 5264 or 0418 166 269.

Falls Prevention and Podiatry*

Falls prevention begins before issues occur. It is important no matter our age (but especially as we get older) to exercise to maintain or improve balance, strength and flexibility. An excellent example of a low impact activity that is great for falls prevention is Tai Chi. Also look out for exercise classes in the local gym that specialise in balance, strength and flexibility.

As soon as someone starts to experience any kind of instability in standing or walking, it is advisable to investigate the cause to ensure they don’t end up injuring themselves, or worse:

• An optometrist can assist with eyesight issues.

• A pharmacist can do a medication review to ensure instability isn’t a side-effect of or incompatibility with medication.

• An occupational therapist can assist with ensuring safety at home and providing mobility aids.

• A physiotherapist can create an exercise program to support mobility.

• Podiatry care is also an essential part of falls prevention! Here are some of the ways a podiatrist can help:

General Care Assessment

Will determine if functional ability can be improved by addressing any general care issues like corns and callus, swelling, arthritis, skin or nail problems, infection, peripheral neuropathy (reduced sensation in the feet) or vascular disease (poor blood flow).

Footwear Assessment

Will see if footwear has the correct support or has worn out and needs replacing. Some footwear features to assist with stability:

• Well-fitting enclosed shoe with a supporting collar.

• Light-weight and not too bulky to prevent tripping.

• Fastener (such as Velcro or laces) to hold the foot in place.

• Low, square heel to improve stability.

• Slip-resistant sole.

• May require a feature like a rocker forefoot to make pushing off easier when walking.

Biomechanical Assessment

Will focus on:

• Identifying structures like muscles and joints that are experiencing weakness and determining the cause of it.

• Advising how to support weakened structures with footwear or orthoses.

• Providing education on the best exercises to rehabilitate weakened structures.

• Identifying whether further investigation is advisable for possible underlying systemic or neurological issues.

Footwear Modifications And Orthoses

Modifications can be applied to footwear to correct or support any issue identified in the biomechanical assessment. These might include wedges or padding, or orthoses to provide more support long-term.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar cafe

This month, our lunchtime food review is of Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar Café, located where the Blind Chef Café used to be.

The Wilson’s, as it is known, offers corporate catering and functions, but during the day, it operates as a café. Offering an allday breakfast that includes burgers, rolls, wraps and eggs every way, an extensive addons list, some sweet offerings and a lunch menu that includes a couple of pasta dishes, there’s a wide range to choose from.

It is affordably priced these post COVID days, with most dishes between $19 to $25, medium coffees about $5.50. The menu does not specify gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan dishes, but the beverage menu offers lactose free, almond, oat, and soy options, which is standard these days.

I ordered one of the juices, Strawberry Sunset, which is made to order on site with fresh seasonal fruit. If you love a good fresh juice, here it is.

The staff were happy to accommodate requested changes to the dishes on the menu, as we swapped fried chicken for grilled chicken in one of the chicken burgers. They were also careful to check the food did not contain any sesame, which I am allergic to.

The Chicken Burger was served on a grilled bun with fresh salad veggies and crispy fried chicken, while the grilled chicken they cooked for our other burger was slightly over cooked and dry to our taste.

The side of chips that accompanied the burgers were everything you hope for with a good chip – thick cut, crispy, and tasty.

The café has a pleasant atmosphere, a nice place for lunch on a weekday.

Open 6am – 2pm weekdays.

Pets for First-Time Owners

For those stepping into the world of pet ownership for the first time, the abundance of choices can be overwhelming. From fish to furry friends, each option brings its own set of joys and responsibilities. Let’s explore some of the best pets for first-time owners, catering to various lifestyles and preferences.

Fish: Low-Maintenance and Therapeutic For those seeking a serene presence in their home, fish make excellent companions. With minimal maintenance requirements, they offer a gateway into the world of pet ownership. Regular feeding and tank upkeep are essential, but the tranquillity they bring is unparalleled. Scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing, an aquarium can be a therapeutic addition to any household.

Dogs: Friendly and Smart For those craving companionship and loyalty, a dog might be the perfect fit. Opting for a low maintenance small to medium-sized breed such as an ‘oodle’ breed, greyhound or cross-breed can offer a balance of intelligence and sociability. Researching breeds known for their compatibility with various lifestyles ensures a harmonious relationship. Dogs not only provide unconditional love but also encourage outdoor activities, fostering a healthy lifestyle for their owners.

Cats: Independent and Affectionate Companions With their puzzling personalities, cats offer a blend of independence and affection. Their low-maintenance nature makes them suitable for individuals with busy schedules or limited living space. Cats thrive in various environments, from cozy apartments to spacious homes. Beyond their playful antics, they teach valuable life lessons to children, promoting responsibility and empathy.

Guinea Pigs: Easy, Social Starters For those seeking a cuddly companion without the demands of traditional pets, guinea pigs fit the bill. These sociable creatures require minimal upkeep and offer endless entertainment with their playful behaviour. Providing a comfortable habitat and nutritious diet ensures their well-being, while regular interaction fosters a strong bond between pet and owner.

Pocket Pets & Birds: Easy First-Time Care Ideal for those with limited time or space, pocket pets and birds offer effortless companionship. Whether it's a rabbit, ferret, or budgerigar, these low-maintenance pets adapt well to various lifestyles. Their simple care requirements make them an excellent choice for first-time owners, allowing them to ease into the responsibilities of pet ownership without feeling overwhelmed.

Ultimately, the best pet for a first-time owner depends on individual preferences, lifestyle, and level of commitment. Whether it's the calming presence of fish, the playful antics of a dog, or the independent charm of a cat, each option brings its own unique joys and challenges. By researching and selecting a pet that aligns with one's needs and capabilities, first-time owners can embark on a rewarding journey of companionship and responsibility.
