(NNPA) – It appears that some people are now realizing what was obvious to me before President Barack H. Obama was reelected to continue leading the United States of America: He is a Black man. He is an African man. As the first African American to be president, the unprecedented hostility and threats against him have been racially motivated as well as based on partisan politics. Yet, Obama continues to be strategic about how he represents his race, genealogy and commitment to promote and sustain African freedom and empowerment. I believe that Obama’s historic trip to Kenya and Ethiopia is indicative of his distinctive characteristic of taking strategic moves that go far beyond the traditional limitations of American politics and global outreach. This was his fourth trip to Africa. As the first sitting American president to visit Kenya and Ethiopia, his timing could not have been better. I guess Donald Trump and other so-called Birthers will once again raise politically divisive questions about whether Obama is a real United States citizen. But like the other divisive issues that Trump and others are raising about the “browning of America,” those stiff-neck far right leaders really miss the point. Like China, the United States should see that its place in the global market place will be increasingly and inextricably linked to having a productive relation-

ship with Africa. Yes, it was good for President Obama to first reunite with his close relatives in Kenya. The pictures of him hugging his Kenyan sister, Auma Obama, and other relatives in the capital city of Nairobi were very inspiring and affirming of strong family values in both Africa and America. In truth, however, President Obama’s major objective to achieve in Africa was about trade, economic development, investments, innovation, geopolitical politics, security and the fundamental promotion of African unity and socioeconomic progress. He rendered a keynote speech to the Global Entrepreneur Summit in Nairobi. In fact, going forward there are economic development opportunities for African-American-owned businesses in the U.S. to develop joint ventures with African entrepreneurs. President Obama strongly affirmed at the summit that, “Africa is on the move.” Referring to entrepreneurial projects that were now being owned and led by women in Kenya and in other nations in Africa, Obama took note and was supportive. “It’s the spark of prosperity. It helps people stand up for their rights and push back against corruption … [it] means ownership and self-determination, an opportunity to not simply be dependent on somebody else for your livelihood.” No sitting American president has ever attended or addressed the African Union (AU) while it was in official session in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has the second-largest population in Africa, behind only Nigeria. The economy in Ethiopia is growing and the African nation owns and operates one of the largest airline services on the continent. President Obama’s speech to the AU was well received by the African heads of state at the meeting. The theme of African unity and mutual economic cooperation was a priority issue. Lastly, I detected a renewed sense of African pride that was exemplified by the statements and actions of President Obama’s latest trip to Africa. I think that African Americans in particular should also strive to establish more effective unity and cooperative business development in our communities throughout the U.S. In the past, owning our own businesses in America was a source of pride and self-empowerment. When Obama was introduced at the summit in Kenya, he stated, “Obviously, this is very personal for me. There’s a reason why my name’s Barack Hussein Obama.” He is proud of his name and his Kenyan ancestry. Auma Obama also said that her father, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., would be very moved to witness his son return to Kenya as the president of the United States. “He’d be extremely proud and say, ‘Well done.” Benjamin F. Honda to pay $24M for discriminatory auto loans

(TriceEdneyWire.com) – The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Department of Justice (DOJ) resolved an action with American Honda Finance Corporation that will put new measures in place to address discretionary auto loan pricing and compensation practices. Honda’s past practices resulted in thousands of AfricanAmerican, Hispanic, and Asian and Pacific Islander borrowers paying higher interest rates than White borrowers for their auto loans, without regard to their creditworthiness. As part of the order, Honda will change its pricing and compensation system to substantially reduce dealer discretion and minimize the risks of discrimination, and will pay $24 million in restitution to affected borrowers. “The CFPB is committed to creating a fair marketplace for all consumers, and other auto lenders should take note of [this] action,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “Honda’s proactive decision to move to a new pricing and compensation system demonstrates industry leadership and represents a significant step towards protecting consumers from discrimination.” “We commend Honda for its leadership in agreeing to impose lower caps on discretionary markups and for its commitment to treating all of its customers fairly without regard to race or national origin,” said the head of DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta. “We recognize that dealerships perform a valuable service in connecting customers with lenders and that they should be fairly compensated for that service … We hope that Honda’s leadership will spur the rest of the industry to constrain dealer markup to address discriminatory pricing.” Auto loans are the third-largest source of outstanding household debt in the United States, after mortgages and student loans. When consumers finance automobile purchases from an auto dealership, the dealer often facilitates indirect financing through a third-

After an investigation, Consumer Finance Protection Bureau found Honda charged minorities higher loan rates inconsistent with credit scores.

party lender like Honda. Honda is wholly-owned by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. It is one of the largest indirect auto lenders in the United States. As an indirect auto lender, Honda sets a risk-based interest rate, or “buy rate,” that it conveys to auto dealers. Honda then allows auto dealers to charge a higher interest rate when they finalize the deal with the consumer. This is typically called “dealer markup.” Markups can generate compensation for dealers while giving them the discretion to charge consumers different rates regardless of consumer creditworthiness. Honda permitted dealers to mark-up consumers’ interest rates as much as 2.25 percent for contracts with terms of five years or less, and 2 percent for contracts with longer terms. The enforcement action is the result of a joint CFPB and DOJ investigation that began in April 2013. The agencies investigated Honda’s indirect auto lending activities’ compliance with the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which prohibits creditors from discriminating against loan applicants in credit transactions on the basis of characteristics such as race and national origin. The investigation concluded that Honda’s policies: Resulted in minority borrowers paying higher dealer markups: Honda violated the Equal Credit Opportunity Act by charging

African-American, Hispanic, and Asian and Pacific Islander borrowers higher dealer markups for their auto loans than non-Hispanic white borrowers. These markups were without regard to the creditworthiness of the borrowers. Injured thousands of minority borrowers: Honda’s discriminatory pricing and compensation structure meant thousands of minority borrowers from January 2011 through July 14, 2015 paid, on average, from $150 to over $250 more for their auto loans. The measures provided in the orders will help ensure that discrimination does not increase the cost of auto loans for consumers on the basis of race and national origin. Under the CFPB order, Honda must: Substantially reduce or eliminate entirely dealer discretion Pay $24 million in damages for consumer harm Administer and distribute funds to victims This latest action, said federal officials, is part of a larger joint effort between the CFPB and DOJ to address discrimination in the indirect auto lending market. In December 2013, the CFPB and DOJ took an action against Ally Financial Inc. and Ally Bank that ordered Ally to pay $80 million in consumer restitution and an $18 million civil penalty.

leven years ago, John Gregory of Columbus, Ohio was facing a perplexing problem. He and his son Perry were operating a community organization named The National Center for Urban Solutions. Gregory said he was witnessing a problem among Black men’s retention at work and possible health problems they showed. He and a physician started to do some research. They hired approximately 100 men between 18 and 30 years old. The only thing they required of the workers was that they go through a health screening. “What we discovered was that these men all had elevated numbers,” said Gregory. What he meant, was that the screening showed the men were susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and HIV. From this startling revelation, the African American Male Wellness Walk Initiative started. On August 1, Gregory along with Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church on Rhode Island Ave. NE, brought the challenge to the National Mall Park in Washington, D.C. The event provided blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, diabetes tests, prostate exams and HIV test for free. All the participants had to do was register with the volunteers so the medical units could give them their results and participate in the 5K walk/ run. Gregory knew he wasn’t going to get men to go to a workshop or a conference because Black men don’t like to talk about their health problems. “Here is what brothers will do: they will be very competitive,” said Gregory. His eureka moment led him to organize a walk for black men health issues. The first walk in Columbus in 2004, had 700 men. Three years after the first walk/run, Gregory said he was thinking about changing the name to the African-American Family Walk to include women and children. “A lot of sisters came to me and said don’t do that. Black men need something they’re out front on and is positive,” said Gregory. “We have professionals of all kinds,” said retired bankruptcy

court Judge Grady Lamarr, who has been associated with the march for several years in Columbus, Ohio. “They come because this is an important statement about health and wellness in our community.” said Lamarr. On a bright and pleasantly warm day last Saturday, Joseph Spears, an education professor, at Bowie State University had just emerged from a medical van, where he received a prostate cancer screening. He looked slightly humbled from the experience and shook his head to acknowledge he had survived. Spears knew the value and purpose of being aware of his health. “I think this is wonderful, particularly for African-American males,” he said. “Health care is important to have people to come together on.” He continued to say, to have the walk/run in the nation’s capital, on the National Mall was making an important statement. Before the run kicked off, Rev. J. Cedric Brown, Associate Pastor of Greater Mt. Calvary said a prayer. “How you live now will determine how you live later,” he said as a warning for the participants to have regular doctor visits and screenings to check their health. On Monday, after returning home to Columbus, Perry Gregory the son of the walk/run’s organizer, said he enjoyed his weekend in Washington DC. “We really think next year will be even better,” he said of the march that drew approximately 500 participants. “We did over 100 screenings and Howard University Cancer Unit said they did the most prostate screening they ever done at one time.” United Medical Center conducted cholesterol screenings, body mass index tests and blood glucose screens. They ran out of supplies due to the high numbers of attendees.

What the numbers mean? By Ed Lake When you receive a blood pressure reading, it is typically in the form of a fraction, the number on the top is known at systolic and the lower number is called the diastolic, said Dr. Ayodeji A. Oso, Associate Professor and Chief of Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. “The way we teach it is ‘saints over devils,’” said Oso. Normal blood pressure for an adult is 120/ 80 or less, he said. Pre-hypertension is 120 to 139/80 to 89. High blood pressure is anything greater than 140/90. All these numbers mean, “you have too much pressure in your blood vessels, Oso continued. “The pressure causes trouble.” If the pressure causes blood vessels to erupt in your brain that’s the diagnosis for a stroke. Other organs like kidneys can also be affected by pressure. The pressure can stop the kidneys from performing their correct function of eliminating waste from the body. If the pressure causes vessels in the heart to be damaged, it can cause a heart attack or complete loss of function in the heart or heart failure. African Americans are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes as non-Hispanic Whites, said Oso. The onset of diabetes is related to poor diet and overeating connected to little or no exercise. Complications caused by diabetes include endstage renal disease, complete loss of kidney function, and lower extremity amputations.

Divine Intervention Religious groups jump on prison reform bandwagon By Jacob Lupfer Religion News Service

(RNS) – In an era when most faith groups’ political priorities align predictably with the two major parties, a truly diverse religious consensus on an issue is refreshing. A generation ago, in response to widespread concern about public safety and illicit drugs, new laws mandated longer prison sentences. Eager to appear “tough on crime,” legislators, prosecutors and judges all had incentives to contribute to the burgeoning prison population. The budget-busting prisonindustrial complex was politically popular for a time, but in the past decade the pendulum has begun swinging the other way. Harsh sentences, particularly for nonviolent drug offenders, created unsustainable fiscal pressures. States simply cannot afford to house more people and pay the salaries and benefits of employees to supervise them. Already, states are taking steps to spend less on corrections. Fiscal conservatives now view prisons as overly expensive, hugely inefficient, bloated bureaucracies. Christians and other people of faith see problems, too. America’s denominations and faith organizations are calling for reform. Our vast criminal justice system emphasizes punishment over rehabilitation, while our faith traditions preach redemption. Catholics were early leaders in promoting restorative justice, the idea that communities must help ex-offenders re-enter society in healthy and productive ways. In 2000, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a major pastoral statement that placed criminal justice issues in the context of social ills, including family breakdown, violence, racial disparities and the perverse incentives of forprofit prisons. Once a powerhouse in ecumenical Christian political influence, the National Council of Churches has reinvented itself as a smaller, more focused agency. Yet it has made mass incarceration its top advocacy priority.

Fiscal conservatives, religious groups join prison reform movement.

NCC President Jim Winkler has a provocative idea: “If churches want to see revival,” said Winkler last year, “they should pick up released prisoners and help reintegrate them into their communities.” Criminal justice reform is not just an issue. It is essential to the gospel: Redeemed sinners proclaiming mercy in the name of Jesus Christ. America’s largest mainline denomination, the United Methodist Church, has been particularly strong in its calls for prison reform and restorative justice. The UMC’s General Board of Church and Society has staff dedicated to teaching, organizing and advocacy on these issues. Leaders from Catholic, mainline and Black Protestant traditions have been sounding this refrain for years. But the growing consensus among White evangelicals and Republican officeholders may finally make sentencing reform an urgent and truly bipartisan imperative. The National Association of Evangelicals, known to be more active on non-sex-related issues than other religious conservatives, has spoken strongly of the need for criminal justice reform. Evangelicals’ consciences are awakening on justice issues due to a recent spate of popular biographies of once-forgotten figures, such as William Wilberforce and Hannah More. Chuck Colson, the famed Watergate-felon-turned-prison-evangelist, helped make prison ministry a vital priority for evangelicals. Owen Strachan, a professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological

Seminary in Kansas City, recently released a new Colson biography. Until recently, disparate groups have largely worked on the issue independently. That is changing. In 2014, Congress appointed a committee to study the feasibility of reform among federal prison populations, whose growth threatens other federal law enforcement and funding priorities. The committee is called the Charles Colson Task Force on Federal Corrections. Earlier this year, the task force sought input from faith leaders and saw unprecedented agreement across traditions and enthusiastic support for reform. For decades, the primary religious debate over criminal justice focused on the death penalty. Capital punishment arouses strong emotions, even though it affects few of us directly. Sentencing and prison policy is more easily seen as a boring bureaucratic issue. Even though millions are incarcerated, most Americans know zero or one person in prison. Yet faith communities are adding urgency to the imperative for prison and sentencing reform, even as they remain divided on the death penalty (for now). In the end, fiscal constraints will force changes in prisons and sentencing if moral concerns do not. It seems better to make these changes out of a warm-hearted, merciful impulse than through cold fiscal realities. Black families borrowing more for college education

By Freddie Allen Senior Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Recognizing that a college degree is one of the surest paths to a job and economic security, Black families are taking on more student loan debt than White and Hispanic families, according to a new report by Wells Fargo. According to the report, student loan debt increased by roughly 97 percent between the 1995-1996 school year and 2015 and Black undergraduates that started school during the 2011-2012 school year can expect to borrow $28,400 for a four-year bachelor’s degree compared to Hispanics who will borrow $27,600. The total price of attendance for Black full-time students increased 115.4 percent during the 2011-2012 school year compared to the 19951996 school year and White students experience 113.6 percent jump over the same time period. The report stated, “The average out-of-pocket net price (which is the

price after aid plus student loans) increased 88.7 percent for Blacks, 80.8 percent for Asians and 74.7 percent for Whites between the 2011 and 2012 school year compared to the 1995 and 1996 school year.” In addition, the report found that more than 60 percent of Black undergraduate students qualify “for some type of aid from the federal government” compared to 50 percent of Hispanics and 34 percent of Whites and Asians. John Rasmussen, the president of personal lending and the head Education Financial Services at Wells Fargo said that two primary realities often frame the conversation about higher education: student loan debt and the growing costs associated with earning a degree. “The outstanding amount of student loan debt has now exceeded $1.2 trillion,” said Rasmussen. “That is larger than credit card debt and automobile debt.” He also noted that the cost of college over the past 20 or 25 years has increased at a pace that is significantly faster than inflation.

6 | Aug. 6 - Aug. 12, 2015 | District Chronicles

“Families are trying to be really practical,” said Rasmussen. “Trying to keep costs down now, staying in state more, exploring community college options, and asking tough questions like, ‘Are my kids ready to go to college?’” Rasmussen added that students and families want federal loan programs that are easier to navigate, better information about the true costs of federal loans and what families can expect for outcomes like graduation rates, job placement rates and salary and earnings and the repayment performance of students. Even though Blacks are taking on more student loan debt, in recent years that increased burden has delivered mixed results on enrollment rates. A 2014 report by the Wells Fargo Securities, LLC Economics Group, that linked educational attainment to economic success, found that Black enrollment in degree-granting institutions has increased considerably since the Great Recession, but that enrollment rate “slowed down

noticeably in 2011 and 2012.” The report said, “This slowdown in Black enrollment in degree-granting institutions plus the strong increase in the enrollment of Hispanics has helped push the Hispanic rate above the Black rate for the first time since the early part of the 1970s.” Still, economists and education advocates agree that a college education continues to be a sound investment, despite the cost. “Not only do you have the ability to improve your earning potential over your life, you also are employed over a longer period of time and you’re more likely to keep your job during a recession,” said Eugenio Alemán, a senior economist with Wells Fargo. The 2014 report cited research that showed that individuals that obtained a bachelor’s degree earned a median income of $50,360, compared to people who finished high school that earned $29,423. “An associate’s degree leads to a median income of $38,607, more than $9,000 higher than a high

school diploma. Those with a graduate degree have a median income of $68,064, 35.2 percent more than those with a bachelor’s degree,’” the 2014 report said. Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., the president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, agreed. “If the message in high schools is consistently ‘Don’t go to college, because it’s too expensive and you’re going to take on all of this debt and you should just go and get a job,’ America is going to have a real challenge as it browns and grays at once,” said Taylor. “Twenty years from now, when you look around and say, ‘There are no African Americans in leadership roles within industry, within government, within any job that requires a bachelor’s degree,’” it will be because people who criticized the high costs of college talked the Black community out of going to college.”Even though Blacks borrow more for college, enrollment declines Despite current numbers, declines, Blacks must continue enrolling in college for leadership roles

from killing a person for holding a BB gun that is on the shelf of that store? Where is Sandra Bland’s Law that would send a cop to jail for falsely arresting a young lady who questioned why she had to put her cigarette out while seated in her own car? Why hasn’t O’Reilly’s TV news counterpart, Al Sharpton, gone to his good friend, Barack Obama, and all his friends in the Black Caucus and gotten them to hold hearings and write Sandra’s Law? Instead of real action, we see our vaunted politicians genuflecting before the powers-that-be, and our “Black” organizations, the NAACP and Urban League, walking 860 miles and issuing an annual report that tells us how bad our situation is, respectively. This is exactly why we need and must support ONUS, Inc. and its URLEIA legislation. “The contents of the URLEIA legislative proposal stand in stark contrast to H.R. 2875 – a bill titled the Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act of 2015 that is currently making its way through Congress,” said said Jerroll Sanders, ONUS, Inc. President and CEO. While H.R. 2875 provides additional funding for grants and U.S. Department of Justice policing

Youtubue/Superbrotha

(TriceEdneyWire.com) – In light of the conversations about police abuse, unwarranted stops and arrests, and homicide cases involving Black people and police officers, many Black people get angry, maybe have a march, and then go home to await the next incident. Some of our organizations do their usual thing by making loud threatening statements and then get back in line until the next crisis hits. Amos Wilson said, “Until our behavior changes, the behavior of those who oppress and abuse us will not change.” In other words, the onus for change is on us. Many of you may not know about the Uniform Reporting Law Enforcement Improvement Act (URLEIA), which is proposed legislation that calls for the creation of a National Office of Civilian Oversight that hosts meetings across the nation to garner citizen input. Law Enforcement agents, their spouses, and unions are not permitted to attend or participate in the Civilian Oversight Conferences. These conferences are essentially designed to create policy that governs policing. Police unions and associations are largely responsible for developing the policing approaches we see in

effect today; URLEIA will change that practice. This legislative proposal is provided by ONUS, Inc., and Black Communities United for Progress (BCUP) for presentation to members of the United States Congress and the President of the United States. Now that’s what I call proactive work that will have a direct and positive effect on Black people. This is not just rhetorical bombast; this is attacking the problem of police brutality from a practical, logical, and legal perspective. Immediately after a White woman was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant in San Francisco, Bill O’Reilly called for what he titled “Kate’s Law” to be passed by Congress. Within days 600,000 signatures were collected and members of Congress went to work to get the proposed law passed. They held hearings and brought the family of Kathryn Steinle to Washington to testify. They got swift action. So where is the Tamir Rice law against cops shooting 12 year olds in less than two seconds? Where is the Eric Garner law against police officers choking a man to death? Where is John Crawford’s law that punishes department store employees for lying to 911 and cops

Youtube video campaign promotes URLEIA, a proposed bill seeking to put law enforcement reform in the hands of civilians.

oversight activities and promotes the creation of national training, accreditation and operating standards, it provides few real solutions to adequately address America’s racist policing problem. I would add that H.R. 2875 creates a National Task Force on law enforcement oversight composed of individuals appointed by the Attorney General from various DOJ bureaus. The AG’s task force will consult with professional law enforcement associations, labor

organizations and “communitybased organizations.” Along with a few other loosely worded recommendations, of course, the usual suspects, to and through which funds would be channeled are named outright, i.e. NAACP and Urban League. If all we do is say we need change, we will never obtain it. It takes work, and ONUS is doing that work. Get involved. For more information, visit www.changeisonus.org

Voter suppression overshadows Voting Rights Act celebration By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Thursday, Aug. 6, marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act into law. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the organization co-founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will hold a Call to Action Rally at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Martin Luther King Memorial on the National Mall. The NAACP hopes to cap its Selma, Alabama to Washington, D.C. relay march, called America’s Journey for Justice, in the nation’s capital on Sept. 16. Other celebratory activities are planned for different times. Considered among the most far-reaching legislation in history, the 1965 Voting Rights Act removed many of the impediments to voting created by cities, counties and states that prevented many

African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment to the Constitution. Dallas County, Alabama, which includes the city of Selma, was typical. As the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, observed, in 1965, more than half of Dallas County was Black. However, of the county’s 15,000 voting-age African Americans, only 156 were registered to vote. By contrast, twothirds of voting-age Whites were registered. It took the savage beating of 600 protesters, including future U.S. Congressman John Lewis, by White law enforcement officials on April 7, 1965, known as “Bloody Sunday,” to stir the nation’s conscience against ballot box indignities. That provided the momentum for passage of the bill. “Only in the wake of the Voting Rights Act did [B]lack voter reg-

istration in the South begin to approach that of [W]hites,” the Joint Center said in a report titled, “50 Years of The Voting Rights Act: The State of Race in Politics.” It continued, “Five years after the passage of the Act, the racial gap in voter registration in the former Confederate states had closed to single digits. By the start of the 1970s, the [B]lack/[W]hite registration gap across the Southern states was little more than 8 percentage points.” In four of the 12 presidential elections since 1964, Black voters have turned out at higher rates that their White counterparts, according to the Joint Center. And the number of Black elected officials have increased from less than 1,000 in 1965 to more than 10,000 in 2015, including President Barack Obama. While properly appreciating the accomplishments of the Voting Rights Act, we should not lose sight of the challenges that lie ahead.

“Since the 2010 election, 21 states have new laws making it harder to vote – ranging from photo ID requirements to early voting cutbacks to registration restrictions – and 15 states will have them in place for the first time in a presidential election in 2016. Those 15 states are: Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin,” according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. And things are likely to get worse before the election The Brennan Center also noted, “As the early stages of the 2016 presidential race begin, state legislatures are already considering hundreds of laws that could determine voters’ access to the ballot. Since the beginning of the 2015 legislative session, and as of May 13,

2015, at least 113 bills that would restrict access to registration and voting have been introduced or carried over in 33 states.” The report notes, “Based on the most recent data, African Americans are 12.5 [percent] of the citizen voting age population, but they make up a smaller share of the U.S. House (10 [percent]), state legislatures (8.5 [percent]), city councils (5.7 [percent]), and the U.S. Senate (2 [percent]).” A report by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights concluded, “While the VRA has been enormously successful in eliminating some of the most egregious forms of discrimination, the reality is that discrimination in voting remains real and immediate.” George E. High rate of prostate cancer among Black men African-American men are 64 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than White men, and Black men are 2.4 times more likely to die from the disease than White men. One in five AfricanAmerican men are diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to 1 in 7 White men. Black men also are diagnosed with the disease at an earlier age than White men. For AfricanAmerican men, the median age of diagnosis is 63 compared to 66 for White men. The median age at death for Black men suffering from prostate cancer is 77, and the median age at death for White men suffering from prostate cancer is 81, said Barbara J. Parsky, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Prostate Cancer Foundation, a Santa Monica, California-based philanthropic organization that funds research

(TriceEdneyWire.com) – Evander “Real Deal” Holyfield, wants to help Black men knock out prostate cancer. Holyfield, the five-time world heavyweight boxing champion and three – time world cruiser weight champion, has filmed a public service announcement urging Black men to get checked regularly for prostate cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among them. The 30-second and 60-second PSA shows Holyfield shadow boxing. He says, “It takes everything you got to beat your opponent.” He then adds, “But … you can’t fight what you can’t see.” Holyfield tells Black men they have the greatest risk of prostate cancer. “So get checked,” he orders. Holyfield filmed the PSA May 28th at a boxing gym in Providence, R.I. The PSA was released prior to Father’s Day, though PSA media outlets have not yet been selected, according to officials.

into prostate cancer. It is not know why AfricanAmerican men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at younger ages than white men, but Parsky said if the disease is detected early physicians can successfully treat it. In addition to their physicians, there are organizations that offer prostate cancer screenings. Black churches get involved In the African-American community, The Prostate Health Education Network, which is based in Quincy, Massachusetts, have held rallies at African-American churches in Atlanta, Baltimore/ Washington, Birmingham, Ala., Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Durham, N.C., Houston, Jacksonville, Fla., Los Angeles, Miami, Oakland, Calif., Philadelphia, Raleigh, N.C. and Richmond, Va., either to have men checked or to the discuss prostate cancer. “We want to tell people to spread the word and encourage their fathers, brothers, sons and friends to get checked for prostate cancer,” Holyfield said in a state-

ment. “This is an issue that affects all men and is in line with our mission to partner with incredible organizations and invest in their important work. I’m honored to go the distance for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Together, we can spread the word and hopefully knock out prostate cancer for good.” He formed Team Holyfield, which is dedicated to servicebased work. He is particularly interested in what affects African Americans and prostate cancer is one such initiative. Holyfield hung up his gloves in 2011. He won the cruiser weight title on May 15, 1987. Cruiser weights can weigh up to 190 pounds Holyfield, who barely tipped the scales at 200 pounds, became the world’s only five-time heavyweight champion on April 10, 2010. Fans called him “Real Deal “Holyfield because he was an undisputed world champion, winning both the cruiser weight and heavyweight divisions. Woodbridge neighborhood’s Good Food Market opened early this year with the help of city grant money.

District of Columbia District announces first co-investment to support local businesses

T

he D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking says Good Food Markets is the first local business to utilize the new District of Columbia Innovation Finance Program, an alternative to traditional commercial financing where the District co-invests with venture capital funds and community development financial institutions. “By investing in Good Food Markets, we are putting a down payment on access to fresh food and increased job opportunities for District residents,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “This is another example of how my administration is supporting District small businesses, expanding economic opportunities for more neighborhoods, and creating greater pathways to the middle class.” Good Food Markets is a neighborhood grocery store in the Woodridge area of D.C. that focuses on providing fresh, quality food to lo-

cal residents in underserved communities. The District matched half the $100,000 investment for Good Food Markets through City First Enterprises, a community development financial institution located in the District. The funds will be used for working capital, fixtures and equipment at Good Food Market’s fresh food retail store at 2006 Rhode Island Avenue NE in Ward 5. “Startup funding programs that both value and understand our mission makes all the difference in Good Food Markets’ ability to provide innovative fresh food solutions in the District’s underserved communities,” said Kristoffer A. Garin, co-founder, Good Food Markets. “The support for Good Food Markets from the District of Columbia and the public-private partnerships makes us proud to be Washingtonians and excited to be launching this social enterprise in D.C.” The Innovation Finance Program is one of the programs designed by DISB as part of the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). Under SSBCI, the District uses federal funds to facilitate investments and private lending to local small businesses. The District’s investment in Good Food Markets

is leveraging $1.60 in private sector capital for every $1 of government funds, including the investment from City First Enterprises as well as a cash collateral guaranty from Telesis CDE Corporation. “By connecting public and private capital for District small businesses, the city is breaking down barriers to capital and creating benefits for small businesses and communities alike,” said Stephen Taylor, acting commissioner of the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking. “City First Enterprises is excited to partner with the District and DISB in this new and exciting financial tool that supports worthy District small businesses such as Good Food Markets,” said Senior Vice President Robin Halsband of City First Enterprises. “This partnership is the first of many as City First Enterprises continues to equip mission-oriented, impactfocused businesses and nonprofits to promote healthy growth in the community. Whether tackling food deserts in underserved neighborhoods or preserving affordable housing throughout the city, our mission thrives through these partnerships.” To view more information about the programs, visit DISB’s website.

Campaign to increase organ donations WASHINGTON (July 31, 2015) – Coming to a close, Howard University Hospital has been recognizing National Minority Donor Awareness Week with public health activities this week. Building awareness of the pressing need for minority organ donation has long been championed by Howard University surgeon and medical professor Dr. Clive O. Callender. First recognized by President Bill Clinton in 1996 and launched by the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP), National Minority Donor Awareness Week, was created

to draw attention to the need for donation and transplantation in multicultural communities and honor minority groups. The mission of MOTTEP is to specifically educate ethnic minority Americans about the need for organ, tissue and blood donation. MOTTEP and Howard University Hospital kicked off recognition of Minority Donation Awareness Week with an information station and general health screenings (blood pressure/glucose) at Whole Foods Market and Health Fair and St. Elizabeth’s East Gateway Pavilion last weekend. More than a third of the over 121,000 people waiting for a transplant are African Americans. Minorities disproportionately need organ transplants, however, more minority organ/tissue donation is

needed, said Dr. Callender, who founded National Minority Donor Awareness Day, which, because of the pressing need for minority organ donors is now observed for a week, Aug. 1-8. Minorities are 25 percent of the population but almost 60 percent of those waiting for a transplant are minorities. The need to be particularly enthusiastic about doing something is great. The goal of the week is to not only raise awareness of the need for more organ and tissue donors but also prevent the need for transplants by promoting healthy lifestyles. During National Minority Donor Awareness Week, Dr. Callender urges people to do seven things to promote awareness and to prevent transplants:

Donate. Register to be an organ/ tissue donor and donate blood. National Minority Donor Awareness Week is a great time to officially sign up to be an organ/ tissue donor and give blood. There are donation registries in every state and most major cities. Share. Let your next of kin know that you would like to save seven lives and improve the quality of life of at least 30 others by donating your organs and tissues. Monitor. Get your blood pressure checked weekly. “Minorities are at higher risk for developing high blood pressure and diabetes, both of which increase the chance of organ failure,” said Dr. Callender. If your blood pressure is above 120/80 (120 over 80) talk to your doctor about ways to control it. Exercise. Walk, bike, dance,

swim, hike or join a gym and exercise at least six days a week for at least 45 minutes. Start the ball rolling by adopting an active lifestyle to reduce the risk of obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Eat right. More green vegetables, less red meat make for a healthier diet. Try a variety of veggies and cut out the sugary drinks. Your body and your organs will thank you. Give up. That’s right, give up smoking. Take a step toward quitting. Check out www. smokefree.gov where you can get tips and sign up for text message support. Promote awareness. Tell seven friends. For more 202.865.4888.
