McConnell efforts in blocking President Obama possible Supreme Court nominee will make our government dysfunctional.

Leon, III (TriceEdneyWire.com) – “The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice ‌ Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President.â€? – Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) With the passing of Supreme Court Justice Scalia, Republicans have taken their hatred of and bigotry towards President Obama to another level. Mainstream media is failing to call out the Republicans hypocrisy for what it is. McConnell and his racist band of thieves have taken the Supreme Court hostage and the American people don’t have the guts to pay the ransom. There are a few simple problems with McConnell’s statement referenced above. First, the American people have already spoken regarding the selection of Justice Scalia’s successor. Their voices were heard loud and clear when they elected Sen. Obama as President on November 4, 2008. Their voices were even louder when President Obama was reelected for a second term on November 6, 2012. Second, there is no constitutional nor historical support for the position taken by McConnell and his minions. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution is very clear on the issue of selecting and confirming a Supreme Court nominee. The President shall have the power to “ ‌ nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Sen-

ate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the Supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States ‌â€? By blocking President Obama’s nominee Republicans have decided that they are going to potentially suspend the effectiveness of the Supreme Court just as they have brought the people’s business, the work of Congress to a screeching halt. Without Scalia’s replacement the Court is operating with eight justices. If the Court gets deadlocked in a 4-4 vote, the lower court (usually a state supreme court) decision is upheld. The Supreme Court is neutered. Republicans bigotry runs so deep that they would rather have a dysfunctional government than allow an African-American president to effectively govern. They have tried to mask their hatred as an ideological difference. According to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “we are one justice away from a liberal majority.â€? Even if that is true would that really be that bad? The most liberal Supreme Court by most measures was the Warren Court (1953-1969). Chief Justice Earl Warren, former Republican Gov. of California was nominated by a Republican President, Dwight Eisenhower. Warren was confirmed with a unanimous voice vote by a Democratic Senate. The Warren court gave us the Brown case, Miranda Rights, applied the exclusionary rule protecting us against illegal search and seizure to state courts (Mapp v. Ohio); extended the right to

counsel in all criminal cases (Gideon) and constructed the right to privacy (Griswold). Journalists need to ask McConnell why President Obama should not be allowed to appoint a Supreme Court Justice in the last year of his term if it was constitutionally permissible for President Reagan to appoint Anthony Kennedy during Reagan’s last year in office. A Senate controlled by Democrats confirmed Kennedy with 97-0 vote. It’s also interesting, if not hypocritical that McConnell and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) voted for Kennedy during Reagans last year. Grassley recently said, “The fact of the matter is that it’s been standard practice over the last 80 years to not confirm Supreme Court nominees during a presidential election year.� Either Grassley has forgotten his vote for Kennedy in 1988, he can’t do simple math or he’s a hypocrite and a racist. At the end of the day this is really simple. There’s no constitutional or historic support for the Republican misleadership’s position. They are operating based upon their bigotry towards and hatred of America’s first AfricanAmerican President and mainstream American media is allowing them to get away with it (and so is Obama). Auto dealers charge minorities higher interest rates on loans

n recent months, this column has reported on a series of settlements reached between banks and finance companies with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Justice. All of the actions were taken to resolve claims of discrimination in auto lending. To date, over $200 million in fines and restitution have been made to car buyers of color who paid higher interest rates than White borrowers – a violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Additionally, and as a condition of the settlements, defendants were required to change their lending practices by significantly reducing the amount of additional interest dealers can add to car loans for compensation. Despite these developments, discriminatory practices in auto finance persist with some lenders and dealers. While law enforcement comes after discriminatory acts have already been committed, a new advocacy effort appeals for dealers to change their practices to prevent further discrimination in auto lending. A group of consumer advocates and civil rights groups recently wrote Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, to stop this discriminatory practice at his dealerships. Last year, Berkshire Hathaway acquired the Van Tuyl Group, the largest privately-held dealership group in the nation. Renamed “Berkshire Hathaway Automotive,” the firm now operates 81 dealerships in 10 states, selling a range of domestic and foreign brands. “While we welcome and applaud efforts of federal regulators to rein in this discriminatory practice, we urge responsible auto dealers to move immediately to end the practice on their own,” wrote the advocates. “As you have publicly stated, we need to end discrimination in any number of settings. We are writing to you to respectfully request that you join us and openly condemn this discriminatory practice and help lead the way to

a fair, open and transparent marketplace,” they continued. When a consumer finances a car purchase through an auto dealer, the dealer has the discretion to increase the interest rate offered by the lending institution and keep some or all of the difference as compensation. This difference between the interest rate priced for risk and the additional interest the dealer adds more compensation is known as dealer interest rate markup. It has also long been shown to result in higher interest rates for borrowers of color. The 17-member coalition calling on Buffett to act includes the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, League of United Latin American Citizens, NAACP, National Consumer Law Center, National Urban League, and the Center for Responsible Lending among others. The joint appeal also acknowledged the influential opposition faced in fighting for fair lending in auto finance. “Unfortunately, the nation’s largest auto dealer trade association, the National Auto Dealers Association, has responded with a campaign to defend this discriminatory practice, jeopardizing the good will that auto dealers may have in their communities,” said the coalition. “As you have said,

‘it takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.’ As a leader in the financial sector… [Y]our leadership would have a market-wide impact.” Ranked by Forbes as the nation’s second wealthiest billionaire – surpassed only by Bill Gates – Buffett built a solid reputation for astute investing and major deals that grew Berkshire Hathaway into a multinational firm with more than 90 businesses owned and additional investments in corporations such as American Express, Coca-Cola, IBM and Wells Fargo. Beyond Buffett, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) and its allies have also called on regulators to end the practice of dealer interest rate markup. “More than two decades of evidence that dealer interest rate markup leads to discrimination is enough,” said Chris Kukla, an executive vice president at CRL. “Consumers of color continue to pay more for car loans than White borrowers. he District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency is financing a new development in the burgeoning Southeast, D.C. neighborhood of Congress Heights to broaden, broadening it portfolio of affordable rental hosing in Ward 8. The development, Archer Park, is a four story building to be built in the 1200 block of Mississippi Avenue Southeast by WC Smith. It is being partially financed through purchase of $28.2 million in DCHFA short and long term tax exempt bonds. This project, which is phase one of a two phased redevelopment of the former troubled Trenton Terrace apartment complex, will bring 190 newly constructed affordable rental housing units to the Congress Heights neighborhood. Archer Park’s financing also includes $19.6 million in equity raised through syndication of low income housing tax credits (LIHTC). Currently there are nine Agency financed projects in development in Ward 8 including four under construction. The four proj-

ects under construction represent $204 million in total development activity. The total of all current DCHFA development activity in Ward 8 is $420 million. “The construction of Archer Park will address the need for high quality affordable housing options, across a wide range of income levels in Congress Heights,” said Maria K. Day-Marshall, DCHFA interim executive director. The apartment building will contain 24 efficiency units, 95 one bedroom units and 71 two bedroom units. One hundred percent of the units will be affordable to families whose incomes are at or below 60 percent of the area median income. Of the 190 units, 14 units will be rented to families or individuals earning 30 percent or less of the AMI. Ten of those units, which will be operated as permanent supportive housing (PSH), will be subsidized by a Local Rent Supplement Program contract between William C Smith, the developer, and the District of Columbia Housing Authority. The four remaining units at 30 percent AMI rent levels will be occupied by tenants with tenantbased LRSP vouchers. The placement of tenants in the PSH units will be managed by the DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH). Community of Hope will provide case management services to include income and employ-

ment assistance, youth mentoring and wellness care for Archer Park’s residents. The building was designed to meet DC Green Building standards for multifamily housing and will feature a green roof terrace. Additionally, solar panels will be located on the roof, generating a portion of the electrical power and reducing the heat load. The project will also contain a 128 car garage with free assigned parking spaces for residents. Residents will have access to the garage roof terrace, fitness room, business center, and meeting room. Phase two of the redevelopment, currently in the predevelopment stage, will be a 74 unit, separately financed for sale townhouse development just to the north of the multifamily building, creating a vibrant mixed-income rental and homeownership community on land that has been vacant for nearly a decade. Through its Public Finance division, DCHFA issues tax-exempt mortgage revenue bonds to lower the developers’ costs of acquiring, constructing and rehabilitating rental housing. The Agency offers private for-profit and non-profit developers low cost predevelopment, construction and permanent financing that supports the new construction, acquisition, and rehabilitation of affordable rental housing in the District.

Evangelicals are making a big mistake

It’s nice to see evangelical Christians citing good-sense reasons for their presidential preferences these days. It seems that many are looking not so much for piety but for traits like leadership, strength, competence, and straightforwardness. It’s too bad that the right reasons are leading so many to a wrong choice. Donald Trump, despite making little effort to look and sound evangelical in his campaign, enjoyed substantial and important support from conservative Christians on his way to a series of Super Tuesday wins. Why? To hear it from many of his evangelical supporters, it’s because they’re convinced he would be not a godly president, but a good president. To put evangelicals’ view of Trump in perspective, consider what we’ve seen over recent decades during a time of tight ties between evangelical voters and the Republic party. For Republicans, seeking the GOP nomination and robust evangelical support in general elections, there has been an imperative for candidates to prove their conservative Christian bona fides. For some, such as George W. Bush, the job came naturally because they actually were evangelical. For others – like John McCain – the attempt was strained but evident nonetheless. And the candidates’ message, conveyed through evangelical lingo, has generally gone like this: “I am one of you (or at least a lot like you).” Hence, Marco Rubio recently sounding like an evangelical preacher with his stump-speech references to Jesus and the “free gift of salvation” and, in the campaign’s earlier stages, Scott Walker making a big show of the Christian devotional book he always carried with him. Meanwhile, the rhetoric from the supposed evangelical “kingmakers” has emphasized a candidate’s qualifications, but his faith and theological convictions, leading many a bemused critic to won-

der whether the candidates were running to be commander in chief or pastor in chief. Not that Trump has completely dispensed with telling evangelicals what they want to hear. He promises to defend the nation’s Christian heritage and to make sure that no store employee is stopped from saying “Merry Christmas.” (Whether this will happen by executive order, legislation, or moral suasion Trump has not said.) But he has frequently botched his biblical references, his “Two Corinthians” blunder at Liberty University serving as Exhibit A. And his “faith walk,” as an evangelical might phrase it, has included many a stumble, especially his admission that he has never asked God for forgiveness. So now, with Trump appearing to be well on his way to the nomination, we find little pretending about this boastful, pugnacious billionaire mogul with the two divorces, the trophy wife, the penchant for insults, and the shaky record on hot-button social issues that have been such a prominent part of evangelical politics: gay marriage and abortion. Instead, we hear Trump-supporting evangelicals and citing reasons we might expect to hear from non-evangelical voters – reasons that are actually logical when taken at face value. One of Trump’s evangelical

supporters in Oklahoma sums it up this way: “You’re voting for a president; you’re not necessarily voting for a pastor.” Adds this supporter, a retired human resources executive named Less McNiff: “I like the fact that he’s strong.” It sounds like common sense. As does this comment from the Robert Jeffress, a prominent and politically active evangelical pastor from Texas. Noting how little Trump is saying and doing to model biblical values, Jeffress says, “Okay, let’s let the church do that and let’s just depend upon government to do the other.” To which many non-evangelical critics of the Christian Right would say, “Exactly! We’ve been urging this for years!” So here’s to the validity of the reasons many evangelicals are citing for supporting Trump. Here’s to basing one’s presidential choice on a candidate’s strength, competence, consistency, electability, rigorous policy proposals and the like. more people did come in the first weekend of the train because she had a friend volunteering with the DC Streetcar who encouraged people to stop in. Since then, she said, the streetcar has not brought many more people into her store. “Maybe tourists will ride it and get off to go into stores,” she said. “The people who live here could not care less. That does not bring more people in here.” Sandra Kim, an employee at Madison’s Cleaners, said that she has not seen much of a difference in business since the streetcar opened. Since most of her customers live in the neighborhood, Kim said, they can get to the cleaners faster by walking than using the streetcar “I think it could help businesses here,” she said. “I am not so sure by how much, because there never seems to be many people riding it.” At Susan’s Fashion, Jas Simpson, a sales associate, said that the streetcar was somewhat helpful to business opening weekend, but not much anymore. Simpson said that during the

Supporters said it would generate a special buzz around HStreet that would create excitement and people from around the city to the once riot-torn street. One week after the launch of the DC Streetcar, however, most store owners and businesses along the H Street corridor in northeast Washington said they are seeing little to no change in business. Instead, they said, riders use the streetcar to get to the Metro station at Union Station while rarely stopping off at the businesses along the way. “All people do is ride by,” said Carolyn Thomas, owner of The C.A.T. Walk Boutique. “They do not get off to check out the businesses here, and there are a lot here on H Street.” The streetcar, which cost nearly $200 million and encountered numerous delays and setbacks, opened last week to much hoopla with a special opening-day ceremo-

ny and hundreds of curious riders from across the city who wanted to be the first aboard the new mode of transportation. Some businesses did see an uptick in business the weekend it began when people from through the city flooded the area for the launch. But not for Domencia Tyler. Tyler, owner of The Chic Shack, a consignment shop on H Street near 13th Street, said the streetcar caused her to actually lose money on its first day because the ceremony blocked potential customers’ access to her store. The city blocked off the street part of the day to create a space for the mayor and other city official’s speeches. Consequently, Tyler said many customers could not attend her special all-day sale, and the streetcar didn’t help out during the week either. “I haven’t really seen an increase in business since it started running,” said Tyler. “The few that do ride aren’t really getting off at stops. It seems a lot of people use it to get to Union Station.” Down the street, at The C.A.T. Walk Boutique, Thomas said a few

U.S. Catholics who identify as traditional or conservative sometimes fail to understand the church’s teachings on social justice and their duty to the poor. That is why it was so heartening to see the Rev. Dwight Longenecker make this point on his traditional and popular blog. No economic system is perfect and no single economic system can be said to be “Catholic,” but it would not be inconsistent for a Catholic to vote for a Democratic Socialist. Indeed, the reason so many Catholics voted for the Democratic Party over the years was because they perceived the Democrats to be the party of the poor, the marginalized, the workers and the “little guy.” So far so good. It is Catholic doctrine that wealth exists to be shared; private property is under a social mortgage for the common good; workers must be paid a liv-

ing wage; health care is a human right, and we must be on the side of the poor first. For Catholics, these are nonnegotiables. But then Longenecker, a priest in South Carolina, goes on to say that faithful Catholics may not vote for Bernie Sanders. This has nothing to do with the fact that he’s Jewish (Catholics have been voting for non-Christians for centuries, particularly in majority non-Christian countries), but rather because of his position on abortion. Citing the views of the Rev. Stephen Torraco, who wrote a voter guide for the popular Catholic television network EWTN, Longenecker says that support of abortion rights is such a grave evil that it disqualifies Sanders (who has a voting record of 100 percent with pro-choice groups) from being considered. But this is not Catholic teaching. Priests for Life has a helpful explanation of this reasoning from Pope

Sanders stance on abortion is problematic to Catholics.

Emeritus Benedict XVI, who in his previous role as the church’s doctrinal watchdog, said: ‘When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation (with evil), which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons.” But what does it mean to have “proportionate reasons” to vote for Sanders, a man who flagrantly ig-

nores the dignity of voiceless and helpless prenatal children – and indeed works hard to make sure they do not receive equal protection of the law? The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops explains that we voters face a dilemma when “all candidates hold a position which is intrinsically evil” – as is the case with positions on things like abortion, torture, assisted suicide, and usury. In such cases, the bishops appeal to voters’ prudential judgement, which includes what they think of “a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity, and ability to influence a given issue.” The U.S. bishops insist a Catholic’s voting choices “may affect the individual’s salvation.” Would a person with these views have proportionate reasons for voting for Bernie Sanders? In voting for Sanders on the basis of the above reasons, such a person is strongly affirming the need to protect prenatal children,

while at the same time also giving due reverence to the other serious and non-negotiable values at stake in this election. Other Catholics may disagree. Some believe the social welfare programs proposed by Sanders actually hurt the poor. I personally won’t be voting for Sanders because I simply can’t make myself check the box of a candidate who so flagrantly denies equal protection of the law for the most vulnerable, thus subjecting them to horrific violence. But these disagreements are an important sign of a healthy church, one that finds both parties to be foreign territory. Let us engage these debates in the spirit of family, united by having a common brother in Jesus, and let us all bring a healthy dose of skepticism for approaches that make idols out of secular political agendas. Give them a challenge A range of opportunities exist for interested students at sciencebased summer camps, after school programs or fairs. If your child is already on a path of science experimentation and innovation, consider encouraging him or her to enter science challenges and competitions. Students in grades 5-8 can enter the contest by creating a one- to twominute video on a proposed solution to solve an everyday problem. Before taking the trip, view the destination’s website with your child and identify areas of particular interest. That will build anticipation and really amplify the visit. he only thing harder than making a fortune is giving it away wisely, says the world’s first Black Rolls-Royce dealer. Thomas Moorehead’s modest childhood in segregated Monroe, Louisiana, offered no clue to the luxury he eventually would market to others and savor himself; nor did his preparation for academic life. Moorehead was just a few credits shy of his Ph.D. in social work at the University of Michigan when a fraternity brother named James Bradley offered him a surprising challenge: go sell cars. “I thought car dealers represented an image that didn’t fit me: big plaid jackets, they smoked cigarettes and talked fast,” said Moorehead to Urban News Service. But Moorehead gave this opportunity some thought. He visited Detroit, toured dealerships and changed his mind. “I really felt like I had walked on Wall Street,” said Moorehead. “I saw well-dressed men in nice suits and bow ties doing really great things.” Thanks to Bradley’s ongoing guidance and his own strenuous effort, Moorehead thrived in his unexpected profession. He sold Buicks, Isuzus, BMWs and even MINI Coopers. Rolls-Royce executives eventually noticed his track record and signed him in 2013 as their first Black dealer, based in Sterling, Virginia. Moorehead began expanding beyond automobiles in 2006. He acquired the first of six hotels, the Marriott Residence Inn in National Harbor, Maryland. His real-estate portfolio now includes more than 40 properties. As Moorehead’s businesses flourished, his family’s appreciation for education stayed top of mind. In 2004, Moorehead and his wife established the Joyce and Thomas A. Moorehead Foundation to support students, families and non-profit organizations in northern Virginia. Moorehead is especially proud of the foundation’s $1.4 million, so far, in Gap

Scholarships for students at twoand four-year colleges. “What we found is that scholarships are available for the first and second years, but junior and senior year are even more important,” said Moorehead. “We provide scholarships for those students in their junior and senior years to ensure that they are able to remain in college.” He remembers a young woman whom the Mooreheads backed as an undergraduate. They remained in close contact and even attended her college graduation. The Mooreheads met the young woman’s mother, who had been released from prison. Their beneficiary wanted to attend law school, but tuition was beyond her reach. So, she asked for the Mooreheads’ help. Thanks to the foundation, and her own persistence, the young woman will graduate law school next spring. Moorehead believes she is one of the reasons why boosting education is key to the success of Black youth. “Black children are no longer a priority,” said Moorehead. “Education is the one thing that will allow us to compete. When others are asleep, you have to continue to work.”

Moorehead’s other charitable endeavors include a Howard University scholarship created in his mother’s name and another with the Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund that honors his father-in-law. Beyond education, Moorehead has assisted the African American Network Against Alzheimer’s. For the 71-year-old Moorehead, the influence of his family and his mentor, James Bradley, keeps him grounded. His favorite time of day is when he returns home, unwinds and performs mindless tasks. “People would be surprised to know that when I get home,” said Moorehead. “I put down the phone and do not pick it up until the next day.” Moorehead’s grandfather taught him the importance of faith and worship. As Moorehead says he told him: “I don’t care what you do. I want you in someone’s church on Sunday.” Moorehead looks back at his lifetime of achievement. “I hope my grandfather would be proud of what I’ve created with my businesses and the importance of giving back to the community,” he said. “And, I don’t care how bad I feel, I go to church every Sunday morning.”

Bonds to introduce legislation limiting late fees to no more than 5 percent

A

t-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds, Chairperson of the Committee on Housing and Community Development, has introduced legislation that limits late fee charges to not more than 5 percent of the tenant’s monthly rent. The Rental Housing Late Fee Fairness Amendment Act of 2016 regulates how housing providers may impose late fees upon tenants for the late payment of rent by establishing fair and uniform standards. The bill specifically defines a “late payment” as any amount of rent that is not paid within 10 days from the time a rent payment is due. The bill also prohibits a housing provider from charging a tenant a late fee of more than 5 percent of the tenant’s monthly rent owed, which can amount to an extraordinary burden for many low-income tenants. Additionally, the bill prohibits a housing provider from deducting a late fee from future rent payments, which can cause timely rental payments to be late if the tenant has not yet paid the origi-

nal late fee. Currently, some housing providers charge a late fee not only in the month when the payment is missed, but each month thereafter until the tenant becomes current on all late fees. Finally, the bill requires housing providers to provide a tenant with written notice that a late fee of up to 5 percent may be charged for the late payment of rent. “This needed bill will provide over 125,000 rental units with new protections against unscrupulous landlords and outrageous late fees when they fall behind on their monthly rental payments,” stated Councilmember Bonds. Currently, D.C. law is silent on how large a late fee housing providers may charge a tenant, resulting in late fee practices that vary widely among District housing providers. Passage of this bill would put the District in line with other states such as Maryland, Maine, and North Carolina which have laws restricting fees to 5 percent or less; and prohibiting housing providers from subtracting late fees from future rent payments.

ton DC Alumnae Chapter (WDCAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Attendees were greeted by an exhibition of notable Deltas in WDCAC prepared by the chapter’s Heritage and Archives Committee and treated to a special display highlighting the Washington, D.C. Alumnae Foundation and others. Lead by Mistress of Ceremonies, Marjorie A. Kinard, local neo jazz band entertained the crowd Jazzy Blu. Also part of the program was Rev. Matthew Watley of Reid Temple A.M.E. Church and Lonnie G. Bunch, III, founding director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. To celebrate the historical opening, WDCAC donated $5,000 to the museum thereby becoming a sponsor. WDCAC honored each living past chapter president with a special video presentation including fireside chat style interviews. Several Delta dignitaries were in attendance including: National Secretary, Cheryl A. Hickmon; 16th National President, Dr. Thelma T. Daley; Eastern Regional Representative, Naya Frazier; D.C. State Coordinator, Sharon L. Williams Jackson; and D.C. State Facilitator, Bi’Anncha Andrews. WDCAC was chartered on February 3, 1921 in Washington, D.C. by nine women including two founders and is the second graduate chapter in Delta Sigma

Over the past 95 years, WDCAC has contributed greatly to the District of Columbia by founding several auxiliary organizations targeted at addressing specific concerns such as literacy and affordable housing.
