Katherine’s Korner

December is Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Month, a timely reminder of the vital work we do to improve health and well-being worldwide As we reflect on strides in combating diseases like polio, we also celebrate the many ways Rotary clubs support local and global health initiatives

The holiday season often brings both joy and challenges For some, it’s a time of celebration; for others, it can be a difficult reminder of loss, loneliness, or hardship Many clubs are addressing immediate needs by volunteering, organizing community meals, and supporting essential services At the same time, Rotary recognizes the importance of mental health, particularly during this time of year. By funding mental health programs and fostering awareness, we aim to offer hope to those who may find the holidays overwhelming.

Rotary’s mission extends beyond addressing immediate concerns to tackling long-term health challenges Through medical missions, disease prevention efforts, and advocacy, we work to bring hope and healing to vulnerable populations worldwide This holistic approach ensures that we are building healthier, more resilient communities As we enjoy the festive season, let us also reflect on Rotary’s commitment to peace In war-torn regions, where the challenges are unimaginable, our dedication to promoting peace and improving health offers a lifeline to those in need We know that without peace, communities cannot truly thrive, and our shared values inspire us to act with compassion and purpose

Thank you for the incredible work you do not just in December but all year round. Through your efforts, we are creating a healthier, more compassionate, and peaceful world. Wishing you a joyful holiday season filled with warmth, kindness, and the spi it of se ice

Katherine joins Santa and Mrs. Claus in celebrating the remarkable efforts of Rotary clubs spreading goodwill and cheer this season. Together, they reflect on the long list of clubs that have earned their spot on the "nice list" for their impactful contributions to their communities. After such a busy day recognizing these efforts, they pause for a well-deserved rest—recharging to continue spreading the magic of service and hope.

STRATFORD ROTARACT’S...

When I worked in London years ago, I discovered the Be a Santa to a Senior program, where community members donated gifts to seniors living in retirement homes I thought it was such a lovely idea and dreamed of one day bringing a similar program to Stratford After years of letting the idea percolate, I finally decided to make it a reality in 2018 during my second maternity leave With my baby being a great napper and my toddler attending daycare part-time, I had just enough time to get started!

Many seniors go without having their wants and needs met, making the holiday season especially challenging Now in its 7th year, the Be an Angel to a Senior program continues to touch the lives of local seniors. The concept is simple: identify seniors in need, ask them what gift would bring them joy, match them with community members (Angels) to sponsor the gift, and ensure those gifts are delivered in time for Christmas.

Local agencies that help identify seniors include One Care, The Local Community Food Centre, Emily Murphy Centre, Optimism Place, Stratford Lakeside Active Adults Association, House of Blessing, Community Living, and the Alzheimer’s Society. Angels can either purchase the gifts themselves or send funds so we can shop on their behalf. Over the past six years, the program has provided gifts to 475 seniors, ranging from grocery gift cards to transportation support, toiletries, and more. Each senior receives their gift alongside a card, a handcrafted trinket, and a Rheo Thompson chocolate

The success of this program is truly a community effort I’m deeply grateful to my Rotary club, the Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Chapter for helping wrap presents, the Stratford Perth Museum for hosting our wrapping party, Kim Moore for creating beautiful ornaments and cards, both local Rotary clubs for donating and promoting the program, and the volunteers who deliver the presents This year, we anticipate brightening the holidays for at least 90 seniors once again

How Can I Help?

We need you to help us sponsor the gifts for the Seniors. We ask that a minimum of $30 is spent on each older adult.

How to Participate

You can participate by filling out the following form

Once the form is filled out, gift information will be sent to you.

Purchasing Gifts

We are happy to do the shopping for you if you provide the funds. Just note this when signing up and more info will be sent on how to do this.

Once Gifts are Purchased

You can drop off unwrapped gifts, or we can pick them up, so we can wrap and deliver in time for Christmas. All gifts to be received by December 16. Please message us if you have any questions. stratfordrotaractpresident@gmail.com

SHELTERBOX IN SYRIA: IMPORTANT UPDATE

Greetings District Governor Katherine, Please share this important update with the clubs in your district.

A Historic Turning Point in Syria

The situation in Syria has reached a historic turning point with the fall of the Assad regime, marking a significant moment in the 14-year-long civil war. However, the security situation remains highly unstable. Various armed groups and opposition forces are contending for control, leading to escalating violence. Curfews are in place in many areas, particularly in northern Syria, where ShelterBox has been operating for over a decade.

The Humanitarian Crisis

Displacement: Over half of Syria's pre-war population has been displaced.

5.5 million have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.

6.8 million are internally displaced.

Humanitarian Needs: Over 16 million people require assistance, many displaced for more than a decade. Children: A generation of children is growing up displaced or in refugee camps.

ShelterBox’s Impact

Since 2012, ShelterBox has assisted over 400,000 people in Syria. Previous projects earned Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 2018 and 2019. Since 2020, ShelterBox has provided shelter for over 25,000 households.

The Road Ahead

While there is renewed hope of safe returns and reunification, the situation remains highly uncertain: Many people are making long journeys back to Syria, unsure of what they will find. Large numbers await improved security before returning.

Conflicts between armed groups continue to displace more people. Collaboration among all factions is essential to protect civilians and ensure safe access to humanitarian aid.

Winter Challenges

With winter approaching, those without adequate shelter face life-threatening conditions. Key Challenges: Winter temperatures drop below freezing, and distributions of shelter and warm clothing have been disrupted by conflict. Our Response: ShelterBox is closely monitoring the situation and scaling up efforts to meet the needs of newly displaced people. Keeping people warm and sheltered is critical during this time.

Call to Action for District 6330

While the fall of the Assad regime offers a glimmer of hope, significant humanitarian challenges remain. ShelterBox is committed to providing shelter and warmth during these cold winter months. Support from Rotary Clubs in District 6330 is vital to save lives in Syria and the 14 other countries where ShelterBox is currently responding.

Support ShelterBox

Thank you for your continued commitment to making a difference. Sincerely, The ShelterBox Team

Global Impact – Terry Peters sees an important role for Rotary in the fight against climate change

Terry Peters is a man of science – a renowned biomedical engineer and pioneer in medical imaging. He is also a passionate advocate for climate action. Asked why he is convinced that human-caused climate change is happening, he says simply, “All the evidence I’ve seen is extremely compelling, and I’ve yet to see any compelling evidence to the contrary.”

Terry has always been aware that “the Earth was out of balance,” and even 27 years ago, when he arrived to start his position at the Robarts Research Institute, carefully chose a house built to R2000 standards. But it was the opportunity to hear Al Gore speak at a hospital fundraiser in 2007 that cemented his commitment. “At the time there was a lot of skepticism and accusations of cherry-picking, but it turned out that the picture he painted was not only realistic but probably understated.”

In his personal life, Terry lives that commitment. His house has triple-glazed windows and a heat pump, and he and his wife have been recycling and composting for many years. He lives close enough to campus to walk to work, and they have driven hybrid cars for more than 20 years.

Terry joined Rotary earlier this year and has come to believe the organization has a significant role to play in climate action. “Rotary has a lot of credibility on a range of issues, but particularly its impact on polio. It’s a global institution having a global impact on a global program. That’s what we need.”

An executive member of the new District 6330 Environment Committee, Terry sees the potential to encourage individual Rotarians to make changes in their own lives to reduce their carbon footprint. But he believes the impact could go much further. “I’d like to see all the clubs in the district focusing on some sort of measurable climate solution—a common goal that can make a real, tangible difference.”

Terry also sees the need for advocacy to urge all levels of government to make climate-friendly policy decisions. “I can’t for the life of me understand why climate has become such a polarizing political issue,” he says. “We solved the ozone layer problem in a non-partisan way – why can’t we do it with climate change?”
