Thank You Isn’t Enough Thomas Lindaman, DTM, District 19 Governor

A

s the 2010-2011 Toastmasters year draws to a close, I’ve taken time to look back on the year that has been and I am in awe of what we have accomplished. No one person could have done what we as a District have done this year. For that, we should be proud because we rallied together, rolled up our sleeves, and made a difference. I’m a big believer in expressing heartfelt gratitude, and this Toastmasters year for District 19 certainly warrants it. A simple “thank you” isn’t enough for all the work we have put into this year. Still, I feel it needs to be said because without you, our success this year wouldn’t have been possible.

There are some individuals I would like to recognize. To LeAnn, your drive and attention to making sure we’re doing things by the book has been greatly appreciated more than you know. Your leadership has elevated us all. Thank you. To Kueier, thank you for being an absolute dynamo. Your enthusiasm has been a spark plug for Thank You, continued page 2

A Toastmaster Learning Community

LeAnn Blankenburg, DTM, District 19 Lt. Governor Education & Training

W

e recently held the District 19 Spring Conference in Ames, Iowa, where the members gathered to support each other, network, and to step up to leadership roles as voted upon or appointed. It is definitely a great Toastmasters community. For those of us who attend as many District Conferences as our schedules allow, we know that it is very uplifting, rewarding and challenging in a “bring it home” kind of way. And for those of you who have not attended a Conference, you really need to attend to feel the energy that runs through the

entire event. Put November 11 and 12 on your calendar now. Those are the dates of our fall conference to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. At a conference you get to see some of the best education sessions put on by your fellow D19 memLearning, continued page 2

the District, and we reap great benefits from your efforts. To Julia, Diane, Cliff, Ann, and the District 19 Public Relations team, thank you for helping District 19 put its best foot forward to the Toastmasters and non-Toastmasters world. It has been an honor to work with you. To Leah, thank you for constantly being a source of strength this year. This year wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did had you not been there to offer words of encouragement or kicks to the backside when needed. To Rhonda, being the District Treasurer is not an easy job, but you did it effectively and with great care and attention to detail. Thank you for jumping in with both feet and taking such great care of the District finances. To the Division and Area Governors, you are the “face” of District 19 more than I am or ever could hope to be. You have served your District well. Thank you for making this year special. To the club officers and members of District 19, you are the lifeblood of this organization. Your drive to succeed as Toastmasters and thrive as clubs have made a tremendous impact on the District this year. Thank you for all you have done this year, and will do in the future. To the families of District Toastmasters, thank you for sharing your loved ones with us this past year. You may not be members yet, but you are as much a part of the District 19 family as any of us. I have one last thank you, and it goes out to each and every one of you. Thank you for the honor of being District Governor. It has transformed my life in ways I’m still discovering, but it wouldn’t have been possible without you. See you soon!

Learning, from page 1

bers, top notch contests that will leave you speechless, community leaders (C&L Award) and famous keynote speakers. This is the BEST community in which to learn. Seeing the growth in members is AWESOME. Thank you District 19 members for a great year in accomplishing education and personal growth goals.

There is a Time Kueier Chung, Lt. Governor Marketing

T

he following remarks are basically those I made at our May 21 District 19 Spring Conference. Now, as then, I want to thank all of you who elected me, supported me, advised me, and worked with me. Thank you again for your support of my Lt. Governor Marketing office this year. It has been a great pleasure working with you and getting to know you. Many of you have become my close friends and supportive colleagues. We email not just weekly or daily, but sometimes several times a day. Often I jump out of bed early in the morning to reply to emails. Still, some of you have accused me of staying up too late— the revealing email times give me away. It has been a year of hard work. It has also been a productive and enjoyable year. Your continuous support and encouragement have made it difficult to leave office. Family obligations in the United States and in my motherland Taiwan, however, have led me not to seek district office next year. I am reminded of a Chinese saying: The tree wants to stay still, yet the wind won’t stop. The child wants to care for the parents, yet they are gone. It tells me I have family obligations to fulfill. As it is said in Ecclesiastes, there is a time for everything. I regret having waited so long to run for the Lt. Governor Marketing office. Things change unexpectedly. I thus would like to encourage those who want to serve Toastmasters to do it now. Don’t wait. Don’t say you might do it later. You never know what might happen later. Still, I will be a Toastmaster. Still, I will recruit new members. And I will see you at contests and conferences. Maybe we will grow old together Toastmasters-ly. Thank you again, friends.

Summer’s Bursting with Club PR Opportunities by Julia Venzke, DTM, District 19 Public Relations Officer

H

ard to believe it’s the end of another D19 Toastmasters year. Summer has arrived, offering up vacations, sports events, picnics, reunions, and outdoor festivals. Fun for family and friends, AND full of public relations opportunities for your club! Promote it to the community by: • Getting a table at a local farmer’s market or festival and offering Toastmasters brochures and local club information • Marching in a local parade with your club banner • Hosting a potluck picnic in a local park shelter with other local TM clubs.Invite friends and colleagues that could be potential new members • Following the example of the Toastmasters clubs in the Quad Cities, and working with a local team to have a “Toastmasters night at the ball park.” Maybe one of your Area or Division Governors could throw out the first pitch! • Visiting a Toastmasters club in the area while on vacation. See how things are done in other parts of the US and beyond, and bring new ideas back to your club. Find club information at this TI link: http://reports. toastmasters.org/findaclub/

• Sending photos of club members participating in these events to local papers. Small town papers in particular look for this kind of “local flavor” material. A few “get the word out” ideas to pass on to my fellow D19 Toastmasters, as I pass the Public Relations Officer baton to Diane DeBok for the 2011-12 year. I have greatly enjoyed serving as your PRO. Thank you so much for emailing me information on your club/Area/ Division events, member accomplishments, and other news. The District 19 email Updates wouldn’t have happened with your participation! I look forward to the new Toastmasters year, where I will serve as your District Historian, and wherever else needed. Have a wonderful summer, and Jamie and I will see you at the Fall Conference in Cedar Rapids on November 11-12!

Investing in Employees: A Success Story

Speak From Your Heart, Your Message Will Start (TM® Mantra) by Paul Stoube, President, GPC/KFI #4737, Muscatine

H

ave you noticed how many companies claim they are investing in their employees? Ever wonder what that actually means? I did, and after being asked to write a brief article about Toastmasters, felt this statement is not merely a claim here at GPC, but a proven fact. The GPC/KFI Toastmasters club was started back in 1981. A group of individuals decided they would like to form a corporate club. They received the full support of our management from day one. Some of the original members were Jim Kent, Cliff McKee, Max Churchill, and Margaret Stych. We enjoy the added benefit and convenience of attending meetings here on site. We typically meet at the GPC/KFI Training Center over the noon hour on the first, third, and fifth Tuesday of each month. The company pays half of the membership dues and provides a meal during each meeting as well. Numerous employees have participated, with successful results, in developing and honing their public speaking skills over the years. I am living proof of that. Despite having the appearance of an outgoing individual, I suffered silently for years with a debilitating phobia of public speaking, avoiding any situation that might involve what I had deemed in my mind as a “performance.” After 24 years with our company, I was offered a chance to work in sales in 2005. Tired of having this demon control my every waking thought, I decided to confront it once and for all. (Your potential is limited only by how many excuses

you have TM®.) Toastmasters played an instrumental role in that endeavor. Do I still get nervous? Sure, everyone does at times. The big difference now however, is I no longer avoid those situations. On the contrary, I see them as opportunities to grow and expand my abilities. Getting butterflies is perfectly natural. The key is to get them to fly in formation. If you have experienced heart-racing fear over a pending presentation, or if you merely want to improve your public speaking skills, I encourage you to find a club near you and visit it. At GPC-KFI we truly have fun working on all aspects of public speaking. We do not pressure guests to speak when visiting. Becoming better listeners is also a key part of being in Toastmasters. The next time you hear some company touting their investment in its employees, take heart in knowing that GPC backs that statement up with its actions. This success story is not just a single, isolated event but can be found corporate wide. GPC/KFI is the corporate club at Muscatine Food Processing in Muscatine, Iowa. The company received the Corporate Appreciation Award in March.

What’s Going on in District 19? Burlington Club Meets the Public at Farmers Market

By Don Wadleigh, Area Governor Areas 93 and 94 Recently, the Burlington Area Toastmasters Club set up a simple booth at the Burlington Farmer’s Market. Sam Creagan came up with the idea and coordinated the display. More than 20 people expressed an interest, and we hope to get at least two or three as new members. The Farmer’s Market is open from 5-7:30 on Thursday nights in the summer months. Our cost for the space is $5 per event. We’ll continue setting up the display for as long as we can staff it and as long as we think it is worthwhile.

Hilltop Toasters Resumes Meetings by Don Wadleigh, Area Governor, Areas 93 & 94

L

ooking back, it feels like a fantastic dream. It was an evening in March when Gil Norris and I conducted a meeting of the Hilltop Toasters #7889, a club for inmates at the East Moline Correctional Center in East Moline, Illinois. It was the club’s first meeting since Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and the Department of Corrections had stopped all outside activities 18 months earlier due to budget constraints. That night, Gil and I, a volunteer who had come to conduct a Bible study, and a person who was to lead a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting, took a herky jerky trip in a van from the guard shack to the chapel where our room was already set up with about 15 chairs and a lectern. We put a pad of paper out for those who were interested in signing up. Space was set up for the NA meeting beyond a temporary wall, and the Bible study was down the hall, but it seemed like everyone who arrived stood in line to sign our pad. Someone left to get more chairs. Two men whose name tags said they were Derrick and Deric came up to tell us they had been in the club before and were happy we were back. Derrick had copies of his TM awards. Among others, he had won Best Evaluator, club Toastmaster of the Year, and second place in a club Table Topics contest. He must have had 20 different certificates and awards in an envelope labeled Toastmasters. I have never seen Gil so happy and full of energy! He explained that we could hold regular meetings when the state had processed the volunteer applications for him, John Hayden and myself. He read and explained the district and club missions emphasizing to listeners that this was their club and that when regular meetings resumed they would elect their own officers. He then introduced me as the evening’s speaker. I asked Deric to time me for 4-6 minutes then gave a quick overview of the manuals and what is involved in putting a speech together. Afterward, Gil led a group evaluation. They nailed me. They mentioned things like switching between first and third person, relying too much on notes, and not practicing enough. Gil said he counted three ah’s. The others claimed I had at least five. I think they were right. Next, Gil asked Derrick to lead Table Topics. Derrick got about five of the inmates involved. Derrick and Deric are old hands. Derrick has completed his CC manual and has done a couple

speeches in his advanced manual. Deric is on speech 8 in his CC manual. One newcomer, a transfer from another prison, had completed three speeches at the other institution. Another fellow came up to me almost in tears. He was going home to Chicago soon and really wanted to be involved with Toastmasters, but he might be out before the club is operational. Gil promised to get him a list of clubs in Chicago, and I told him how to find the Toastmasters website. I will try to get the names of the District, Division and Area Governors in that area and send them a letter of introduction. Of 26 inmates who attended that evening, 24 signed up. The leaders of the NA and the Bible study groups beamed afterward. The NA leader was especially thankful we were coming back. He said we were so loud and enthusiastic that he could barely run his meeting. Thanks to Gil’s efforts and financial support from a number of D19 Toastmasters, Hilltop Toasters resumed their regular meetings in April, but because this is a minimum security facility, the turnover is high and the financial need is ongoing. We hope that individual Toastmasters of District 19 will respond with sponsorships and donations. With new memberhips and dues, an additional $800 and $1000 per year are needed. We provide CC Manuals to those who want to proceed, but membership applications are not sent and members are not inducted until they have completed three CC Manual speeches. Each person contributes $3 per month toward membership dues. That leaves $9 every six months that we need in addition to the $29 new member fee. If a Toastmaster wishes to sponsor a Hilltop member, the contribution is a $29 initial contribution followed by $9 every six months. All contributions are welcome and are tax deductible. We accept donations by cash or check. Checks should be made out to Hilltop Toasters and sent to Hilltop Toasters, c/o Gil Norris at 2623 34th Ave. Ct., Rock Island, IL 61201. Cash donations can be made directly to Gil Norris, John Hayden or myself.

Remembering Hawkeye Toastmaster Pete Thurman by Laura Meade

M

embers of the Hawkeye Toastmasters in Cedar Rapids are remembering their friend and longtime fellow member, Peter Thurman, who died in his sleep March 20. Pete joined Hawkeye back in the 1960’s (before women were members, he’d point out, appreciatively) and was an active member through his 90th birthday last summer. When he couldn’t drive to meetings anymore, his brother-in-law drove him. When his brotherin-law passed away, Pete sought out the services of the Riders of America Club, a volunteer driving service for seniors. He didn’t like to miss many meetings, and always sat in the front of the room so he wouldn’t miss any words or actions. He was known among his Toastmaster friends as a seed corn farmer, a world traveler, a voracious reader on global economic and political issues, and a loving husband to his wife, Lorene. We heard many speeches about Pete’s travels around the world where he observed farming techniques in different cultures. He shared stories of China, Africa, Europe, and South America. He encouraged fellow Toastmasters to take a global viewpoint on many issues, yet he was a strong advocate for small farmers, and spoke often against city encroachment of local farmland.

On the exterior, Pete came across as a rough, no-nonsense farmer. He had a deep, strong voice which he’d raise when he was passionately making a point, and he’d take off his glasses to make better eye contact. But when he brought his wife Lorene to meetings, especially as she struggled with Alzheimer’s in her later years, he was as gentle, kind, patient, and loving as a person could be. He calmly answered all her questions, even as she repeated them five minutes later, and he was her companion and caretaker for many years. Pete was very smart and often said things that would stick with you. He observed that we raise more food for cattle than we do for people, and we could eliminate a lot of hunger in the world if we were willing to change our priorities. He also said he hoped “the United States can get better acquainted with the rest of the world, and that we can work with Europe to make the world a better place for all of us.” A memorial service for Pete was held on April 29 at the Peoples Church Unitarian Universalist in Cedar Rapids.
