SANDEEP RAJ MADASU, DTM Greetings distinguished members of District 126, It’s a matter of pride for me to write a foreword for Thrive – Newsletter of our District.

At the outset, I would like to thank all the members and leaders who have chosen to continue their journey in Toastmasters.

Last year, as your Program Quality Director, I came up with a vision of “back to basics” as we were a new District. With your support, we had laid a strong foundation. Now, I believe it is the right time to thrive.

A life without a goal, seems like a body without a soul. Let’s set a target for ourselves as members, as Club Officers and as District Officers. Let’s thrive through the challenges we encounter towards reaching our goals.

With all your support, let us, as a District, challenge all odds and aim to become Smedley Distinguished. While aiming for Smedley status, we will join your mission too and extend our support in achieving your member and club goals. Now the BIG question is: What is your Goal and How can we thrive together ?

VIKRAM CHANDRA, DTM Greetings fellow District 126 Toastmasters, I hope this month’s message finds you well as we prepare to enter the training, renewal & contest season.

It’s an exciting time as we continue our journey of being better communicators and leaders. Your commitment to furthering not only your growth but also your club’s is commendable and greatly appreciated.

The District 126 Education Committee is excited and ready to provide the training needed for everyone’s success and I look forward to serving you as your Program Quality Director this year. We are planning for trainings on modules such as Distinguished Club Program, Moments of Truth, Contests, Conferences among others.

The PQD office is also working to ensure 100% Pathways adoption in the District, MentorMentee Mapping and much more.

Through this newsletter, I wish all the Toastmasters in District 126 to achieve the ultimate success they perceive to achieve in their respective journeys.

A one-year-old baby is a bundle of curiosity and discovery, attempting those tentative first steps with a determination to explore the world, filled with youthful enthusiasm and boundless energy.

This parallels where our District 126 stands – just one year old, taking measured steps but resounding through our actions.

Vincent Van Gogh asked, “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything ?”

Many of us resonate with this sentiment, having taken the courageous step to improve our public speaking and leadership skills. Now, it's our turn to extend this courage to friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors.

As your Club Growth Director, I urge you to share your experiences and successes, helping others grow with you. Together, let's create an environment where aspirations take root, clubs flourish, and transformation stories become our District's heartbeat. We, as District Leaders, pledge unwavering support to empower you as proficient communicators and leaders, shaping not only your destinies but also the communities you serve.

Dear Members of District 126, Welcome to the latest edition of our beloved newsletter, now renamed as "THRIVE". The choice of this name reflects our collective ambition – to flourish and prosper as communicators and leaders within the District.

"THRIVE" symbolizes growth, vitality, and progress, which are at the core of our journey. In these pages, you'll find inspiration, insights, and stories that celebrate our shared commitment to personal and professional development.

As we embark on this exciting chapter, remember that we are not here just to survive; we are here to THRIVE. Enjoy reading and let this newsletter be your guide to an enriching Toastmasters experience.

TURNING EXCELLENCE INTO A HABIT It was in January 2017 that I became a member of Toastmasters International. And it was 8 months later in August 2017, that I attended the International Convention at Vancouver, Canada. My experiences from the Convention changed my perspective completely. I met members from across the globe, interacted with World Champions and realized that I have a family of Toastmasters wherever I go. I saw photographs of Traveling Toastmaster displayed everywhere. Needless to say, I wanted to be up there too!

While in Canada, I visited many touristic spots, and everywhere I went, I carried the Toastmaster magazine and clicked photos of myself holding the magazine. I take great pride in being a Toastmaster and even after my return to India, I continued the practice of Traveling Toastmaster.

In December 2020, while the world was recovering from the first wave of the COVID pandemic, we decided to conduct a meeting onboard the Nagpur Metro which had been newly launched back then. I was serving as Division N Director and we made history by conducting a Metro meeting. We were featured in the June 2021 issue and I was thrilled to see Nagpur in the International magazine.

My travels continued and be it in Canada, Vietnam, Budapest, or Agra, Bhopal, Puducherry, I always took photos with a TI merchandise and sent it to the Toastmaster magazine. What a delight it was to see my photo published in the December 2022 issue with Smita Mishra, DTM. We had travelled to Vietnam in August 2022.

The 3rd time that I was featured in the Toastmaster magazine was in September 2023. During my term as DPRM of District 126 last year, we conducted the world’s 1st PR CONTEST, complete with a Rulebook, Judges ballot and Tally sheets, etc. This was met with a resounding success, so much so that we had to conduct a 2nd edition too. I sent an article about the PR CONTEST to TI and it was published as a fullpage article.

As I write this article, I have a confirmation that I will be featured on the Toastmasters International podcast too! My happiness knows no bounds, of course.

The September edition of Toastmasters Magazine featured Mayuri Assudani, DTM.

As said Leonard Nimoy “The more we share, the more we have”.

But my dear Toastmasters, if I can, so can you. If Toastmasters has made a transformative impact in your life, then share your stories, share your photos, share your memories.

THROUGH THE EYES OF A TRAVELLING TOASTMASTER: KHAO SOK TALES

It all began when our the then DPRM, Mayuri, messaged me about a quirky task: grab a copy of the magazine and strike a pose with it for a photo. I was in a remote village near Khao Sok National Park, embarking on a mission across mom-and-pop shops until one kind shopkeeper agreed to print the cover page for me, even waiving the cost upon seeing my broke traveler vibe.

Months ago, during a trip to Thailand for scuba diving certification, I seized the opportunity to explore further. This led me to the remote wonderland of Khao Sok National Park, where nature meets adventure, with its huge limestone mountains shooting straight up in the air, floating huts, and colossal caves.

One cave was a bat sanctuary, with thousands of them hanging upside down and underground pools, adding to the adventure. The lush greenery of the oldest rainforest around a vast reservoir is home to many wildlife species; I witnessed a baby elephant playfully shooing a sand piper bird and marveled at the forest's night safari, encountering gigantic spiders and colorful frogs.

For the perfect shot, I sat at the rear of a fast-moving motor boat, holding the TI magazine cover against the stunning backdrop of limestone mountains and turquoise blue waters.

The next morning, aiming for another striking image, I posed with the magazine cover while balancing a paddle on a kayak. A not-so-graceful slip into a 100-foot deep waterbed ensued, but my trusty life jacket saved the day.

Sadly, my pockets took a hit, and all my gadgets for more photo ops became soggy. Upon returning to India, I sent those daring photos to TI, and to my delight, they chose to publish them, forever etching my adventure into the magazine's memories.

DISTRICT CHAMPION'S INTERVIEW

TM Rahul Jain, International Speech Contest District 126 Champion for 2022–2023

Hello readers of THRIVE, We interviewed our District Champion Rahul Jain about his journey in Toastmasters.

Here is a glimpse of the interview!!

How long did you take to prepare your winning speech?

Frankly, I don't sit down to write speeches. I delivered this speech with a different content in 2019 as a test speaker in multiple clubs. This speech was earlier called Living In Spirit. Frankly speaking, I had around nine stories which led to the same message. Eventually, as time passed by, the version which I used in this year's contest cycle, right from the Club to the District level, was the same one but with different combinations of stories. What changed was definitely the mix and the polishing and the fine tuning part of it. You can say the speech specifically, the idea of the speech was in making for four years.

Throughout your writing journey of this particular speech, was there a time where you went to bed saying - Yeah this is a perfect structure I have in the speech. And the next morning you woke up saying - No, change the structure, change the transition, change the example itself.

Any particular incident that you had?

I changed the sequence of the stories for the District contest, Jubilance finale, just two days before it happened. Right then, my speech had the Mother's Day story, then the Father's Day story, and then the humor part. I delivered this as a practice speech at ServiceNow Club. What I had done is I pushed the father's story, which is sentimental and heavy in nature towards the end. Once I delivered it there, the ending didn't feel good. The ending was very heavy and like a professing message. Later, I changed the storyline to bring the father’s story to the second part, and then the humor to close the speech on a lighter note as a third story. All this happened two days before the contest.

You said you have given the same speech six times a month before Jubilance. You also said that you have received a lot of feedback on different points. What impact did that evaluation, a lot of evaluation, have on you as a speaker or a speechwriter?

One challenge for me, especially having been into the world of public speaking for a long time, is that there are different evaluators who are at different levels. And each one's feedback is different. Someone gives feedback at the macro level based on how they feel about the speech and someone is at a particular micro level. That line, that word, that transition, that emotion, and the detailing which they give. So each evaluator is very different. Everyone has a bias on some element. For me as a speaker, it is very important to understand what that bias is. The same feedback, on the same element, one person praises me and one person negates me.

Speaking of feedback, here comes my next question. What was the impact of your mentor on your speech journey?

My official mentor in Toastmasters has been DTM Manideep. But alongside that, a major support system for me has been my partner, TM Pragya.

With both Manideep and Pragya, the case has been that they have been my validating partners.

Obviously, there are certain elements of strengths which they recognize in me. They also recognize that this is not you.

Sometimes some recommendations will be “when it was a story of your mother, you could have dramatized it”, “You could have talked in your mother's voice in the sense, change the voice”, or “When it was about your father, you could have done this drama or enactment or characterization and all those things.”

What has pushed you to contest each and every year?

I have never contested with winning as an idea but with the idea of experience.

Obviously, when you are contesting, you are far more detailed. You are very particular about the finer details because you are getting to a stage where people are seeing you as a contestant. That idea of getting on to the stage as a contestant is different from getting on to the stage as a speaker in a meeting. When I got to know that Jubilance or the district finale is going to be offline only, I knew it, I will try to fight it out. That is my drive. More than winning or anything, taking up that stage and adding value to that stage is my drive.

Next would be a twofold question, Firstly, what was in your mind while you were taking those steps and coming on to the stage before you delivered your speech?

Secondly, what were your thoughts when you were listening to the other speeches, other contestants?

From what I remember, I was the seventh contestant in ISC. As soon as I was given an option to move out, I moved out. I try to move out so that I can keep my calm, keep my sanity, and just make sure I am focusing on my strength of what it is that I am going there to deliver. Today, when I look back and see the recordings of a few other speeches, somebody is young and full of energy, somebody is full of dramatics with less of content maybe, and each one had their own strengths.

At any point of time throughout the two days that you were contesting, did you have it in the back of your mind that you might bring in HSC content in ISC speech and ISC content in HSC speech?

I joked a lot about this 15 days before the contest that while I am standing on stage, when I am beginning the ISC, will my first line of HSC come up or something like that? I have built a psychological trick here. I will be changing my dressing for every contest. You see, in all the four contests I have contested, The coat might be the same for two contests (two on day 1 and two on day 2), but there is a shirt and a T-shirt for each coat. That was a psychological trick to my mind that I am moving into a different place. That way I can remember what speech I will be delivering at that point of time.

How did you select a topic that stood out from others’ ?

Straightforward answer - Relatability. The topic has to be more common for the speaker to have a connection with the audience. The difference, however, is in the narrative that you create on that topic. For example, my story of special days, the challenge was not that it was different. Everyone will say “live in the moment”, “live today”. These are all very common takes.

Even if you look at this year's World Championship speeches, what were the topics? They are again, very generic and some topics which have connectivity to a lot of wider audience. So in a nutshell, I would say, a generic topic with your authentic narrative will help the topic stand out from others’.

Who have been your biggest inspiration for this speech or for the speech journey?

I would say the moment I joined Toastmasters, one person that I have always looked up to in my club is DTM Prathima - For the persona that she has, the clarity, the way she communicates her speeches or as an individual.

Though I have always had a fear of being mentored by her, she is one person that I have always looked up to beyond toastmasters, I have had this teacher, because of whom I began public speaking way back in 2005. Her name is Durga Mohan. I am still in touch with her. The first thing that I did after I got my trophy was go back to her home and hand over the trophy to her.

100 YEARS ON THE HORIZON 15th August 2023 - At that time of the year when all of us take a moment to reflect on the ideals upon which our nation was founded, the members of District 126 gathered for an event - 100 Years On The Horizon.

India is the land of the free because of the brave. There is a Latin proverb that translates to “Fortune favors the Bold and Fortune favors the Brave”. Well, that’s the spirit of Toastmasters too. Toastmasters International helps people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders. This requires people to break free from the shackles that they built for themselves and take that first step to improve.

To celebrate the spirit of freedom, to gloat about it for the generations to come, to see what we can contribute to creating a Better India by being a Toastmaster, District 126 of Toastmasters International has organized an event themed “100 Years on the Horizon” in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Hyderabad, Gachibowli. A grand celebration was held at G Narayanamma Institute of Technology and Science, Shaikpet.

The people who attended the event witnessed two keynote speeches one by DTM Chandrashekar DP and Rotarian Vineet R Bhatt about how being a Toastmaster and Rotarian we can contribute to creating a better India.

Post this, all the guests and keynote speakers were felicitated, vote of thanks was given and the program concluded.

UTOPIA 3.0 When Toastmasters enthusiasts gathered at FactSet, Gachibowli on September 23rd, 2023, for the event UTOPIA conducted by Divisions EFGH of District 126, they embarked on a transformative journey filled with insightful experiences, memorable moments, and a deep sense of community.

The event kicked off with a powerful keynote speech by the District Director, DTM Sandeep Raj Madasu that set the tone for the day. DTM Sandeep shared personal anecdotes and valuable insights into effective public speaking, leaving attendees inspired and ready to explore their own potential.

Following the keynote address, a panel discussion brought together a diverse group of accomplished Toastmasters. DTM Smita, DTM Phani, and DTM Manideep discussed the evolving landscape of public speaking and how Toastmasters had played a pivotal role in their personal and professional growth.

This discussion not only provided valuable takeaways but also highlighted the sense of community that Toastmasters fosters.

One of the most anticipated segments of UTOPIA was "The Million Dollar Idea" competition by the DPRM TM Charan.

Participants presented their innovative ideas, blending creativity and communication skills.

The judges were impressed by the caliber of ideas presented, reinforcing that effective communication & PR ideas can indeed impact the community and participation.

UTOPIA was not just about serious discussions; it was also about fun-filled activities that fostered connections.

As the event concluded, participants left with a sense of empowerment and newfound connections. UTOPIA had successfully created an environment where talent was nurtured, opportunities were seized, and public speaking skills were honed. UTOPIA was not just an event, it was a reminder of the incredible journey that Toastmasters offers. It reinforced the idea that with the right support and a platform for growth, anyone can become an effective communicator and leader.

TOASTMASTERS ON WHEELS “Chappan dukaan” or “56 shops” is a food-lovers paradise, situated in Indore (M.P.).

Mayuri Assudani, DTM was in Indore recently for work and despite the heavy rains, made it to “56 shops” to relish some lipsmacking street food.

"Embrace the beauty of nature's wonders - venture into the wild, breathe in fresh air and just enjoy the feeling."

My mantra for travel this time was to escape from the daily routine, to drive away from the mobile network and relax in the arms of the nature and I enjoyed every bit of it at Dandeli, Karnataka and didn't forget to promote Toastmasters on the top of the peak TM AKHILESH MORISHETTY at DANDELI, KARNATAKA

But the passionate Toastmaster that she is, she did not forget to take a picture with the digital magazine MAYURI ASSUDANI, DTM at CHAPPAN DUKAN, INDORE

"Mountaineers are often tested with patience, physical and mental strength, a get-going attitude.

TM Sanjay was able to pass all the tests and complete the trek to Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC) at 5634 m (17,598 feet), which is the base camp of the world's highest mountain peak.

And he firmly believes Toastmasters played an essential role in passing the tests.

Alice Walker TM Lakshmi travelled to Wayanad on the road, exploring the forest and wildlife while enjoying the spirits of nature. Our Toastmaster on wheels tells us: The magic of traveling is that it always leaves her speechless and then makes her a better storyteller.

MEMBERS’ ARTICLES As a pioneer member of the Club, it is a poignant moment when you get to pass on the baton to the next members of the Executive Committee.

Chartered in January 2023, there was a lot of apprehension and hesitance to take charge as the Vice President of Public Relations. The line and nature of work are not new to me. What I was apprehensive of was the thought that I was putting myself open to more criticism. As it is said, it is easier to criticize than to appreciate. But Toastmasters swept away all my fears. Be it a poster or a speech, the nature of feedback was always pleasant, positive, and welcome. Toastmasters encouraged me to come forth and take charge on the stage rather than sit behind the stage and be a ghostwriter. I got the wonderful opportunity to attend Jubilance 2023, where I made a lot more friends than mere connections.

My world has expanded both in terms of learning, the number of friends and openness to communicating.

As Scott Adams said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep”.

Thank You, Toastmasters, for teaching me the art.

It is a sanctuary where emotions run deep, and individuals come together to uplift themselves and their peers, preparing us not just for the corporate world but for life’s challenges with hearts intertwined in the pursuit of growth and excellence.

Leadership Illuminated: My Toastmasters Journey “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” Simon Sinek.

This quote has been the guiding light of my journey in the TCS Nagpur Toastmasters Club since February 2022. Reflecting on my experiences, I am compelled to salute the club’s executive members for their unwavering commitment to leadership and pivotal roles in shaping our Toastmasters adventure.

In this dynamic club, I had the privilege of witnessing leadership in action. Our executive committee members are the true architects of our success. They lead not with authority but with heart and dedication. Each of them exemplifies the Toastmasters spirit, lighting the way for all of us.

Our President, Vice President of Education, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Public Relations, and other club officers have set a remarkable example. They define leadership as service, tirelessly working behind the scenes to ensure our meetings run smoothly, our members thrive, and our goals are met.

Their ability to inspire, guide, and empower us is genuinely commendable. They foster an environment where every voice is heard, ideas flourish, and growth is inevitable. It’s a testament to their leadership that our club continues to flourish, even in challenging times.

As I write this article, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to these exceptional leaders.

They have not only enriched my Toastmasters journey but have also illuminated the path for many others. They prove that leadership, at its core, is about caring for those in your charge, and I salute them.

MOC SEASON 5 MOC is a public speaking competition open to all students who are NonToastmasters. One of the primary objectives of the MOC is to help develop the public speaking skills of the participants. Also, it is a great place for students to meet new people and enhance their network.

MOC has also helped us to take the word of Toastmasters into the colleges and many of the students are willing to become members of our District 126.

I got rejuvenated when I heard that MOC would be back this year. I immediately stepped up to be the Convener. While it is indeed an amazing opportunity to be the convener, it was accompanied by an equally serious responsibility.

Together with my Co-Convener and the entire team of MOC, we had amazing prelims in different geographies of the District. Looking forward to the wonderful semi-finals and finals.

As the Co-Convener of this comeback event, I had the privilege of being part of an incredible journey. Coming from a tier 2 college, the chance to lead as a CoConvener was an opportunity that presented itself unexpectedly. I had the opportunity to refine my abilities and expand my knowledge in various areas.

DIVISION ON SPOTLIGHT DIVISION E Milestone meetings Elan Toastmasters Club conducted its 375th meeting where member orientation, fun activities, etc., took place.

Stagecoach Hyderabad Toastmasters Club conducted its 175th meeting, where TMoD walked the audience through the theme “7 Habits Approach to Elevate Your Impact”.

Special Meetings Hyderabad Toastmasters Club celebrated Indian Independence Day in one of their club meetings.

Toastmasters CBIT conducted EmpowerX, where the District International Speech Contest winner, TM Rahul Jain, gave some insights on speech crafting.

Demo Meetings Division E Leadership Team conducted a demo meeting at DBS, a Singaporean multinational banking and financial services corporation.

DIVISION ON SPOTLIGHT DIVISION N Member Engagement Division N has always kept members first and engaged them with fun-filled sessions and activities.

Some of the initiatives that are planned for this term are : Nplugged - An initiative to bring our members to the forefront and know from them how Toastmasters has helped them in their lives.

Nveiled - A panel discussion where members come together and discuss various aspects of Leadership.

Ngage - It covers various workshops and sessions of different types of speeches.

We have successfully put together 2 seasons of these initiatives in the past years, the third is due this year.

Special Meetings All the clubs in Division N are at least 2 years old and are cultured to encourage members to conduct innovative meetings and help more people join the fraternity. Other than the classical meetings, clubs organize special meetings on various occasions, some are : 1. Independence Day meeting at Raisoni Institute’s Brio Toastmasters Club: The theme of the meeting was Freedom Vibes.

2. 5th Anniversary Meeting at Gurukul.education Toastmasters Club.

3. All Clubs Joint Meeting - Division N conducted a joint meeting for all the clubs of Nagpur in the month of May.

Member Achievements: 1. International Speech Contest (District Level) - TM Akshansh Singh has bagged 2nd Position in the International Speech Contest at Jubilance 2023.

2. Design of the month - TM Gunjan Banarsi bagged the best Design of the Month award for the meeting poster she created for Gurukul.Education Toastmasters Club in the month of July 2023.

3. Clubs have bagged awards Trailblazers Awards and Golden Club Awards.

Distinguished Toastmaster Mayuri Assudani took the training and members of the entire district took part in the session.

2. Loyal Toastmasters Club hosted a workshop on Crafting a Speech and Concepts of evaluation by the District Champion for the year 2022-23, TM Rahul Jain.

Open House TCS Nagpur Toastmasters Club conducts an Open House every quarter to spread awareness on their campus. The members organize different activities for the employees and spread awareness about public speaking and how Toastmasters can help them improve themselves.

SSIPMT Spellbinders conducts Open House meetings annually when a new batch arrives on the campus. The main attraction of the event is the quirky Table Topics round and the keynotes. The next session is in mid-October.

Upcoming Events IPL - The most anticipated event of the Division is the Impromptu Premier League where clubs come up with their teams and run in the race to become the IPL Champions.

Ngage with Debates - A workshop dedicated to understanding and practicing debates.

Nplugged - Nplugged is a conscious effort from Division Leadership to know the members outside Toastmasters. The interviews will be uploaded on Division N’s YouTube channel.
