Editor’s Letter

District has not published for two months now. It is totally and completely my fault. I have been going through some rough times with school and did not have the time nor energy to complete the magazine. That does not mean we have not had fabulous contributors and a cover girl who have worked with me to create this December issue, because we have. Both Pacelli and I are working toward a better District. One in which we can both create something we care about. When we roll out our next issue in January it will look slightly different, but we are excited and cannot wait to put our passion and zest back into the magazine. I apologize to our readers, contributors, and cover girls for this lack of publication over the past two months. However, the December issue is out now and it is a wonderful issue full of interesting stories on how to combat dry skin, how to shop for the beauty guru that has it all, what to wear throughout the holiday season, and so much more. Our cover girl, Devon, caught my eye years ago when I saw her on the Kiel James Patrick instagram. She is absolutely gorgeous, funny, and a joy to work with. I wish her the best of luck as she opens her online decor shop. We hope you enjoy this issue & we wish you the best holiday season. As always, remember to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and that District is “your right to a beautiful life.”

Keep It Beautiful,

Holiday Dressing By, Lesha of Living Lesh

Creating the perfect holiday outfit for your party needs

D

ressing for the holiday season can be complicated. Not everyone wants to wear jeans to holiday parties or special occasions, and sometimes it feels as if a dress just isn’t appropriate for the colder weather. It isn’t always that it is too cold for a dress, but it’s almost automatic thinking to equate dresses with warm weather. As someone who is always concerned with what to wear for any occasion or event I attend, I’ve lost the fear of wearing a dress in cold weather. My biggest concern lies in the color scheme. My closet it filled with dresses of brighter colors – reds and teals and pinks; however, my favorite color for the holiday season is black. It’s an age-old fact that black simply goes with everything, and I find that to be absolutely true. The trick to adding some holiday cheer and livening up your outfit lies in the color you choose to complement your black ensemble. December is a month filled with holiday parties and get togethers. My calendar is already filled with outings with family, friends, and coworkers. When I think of December and the holidays, the first color that comes to mind is gold. It’s the color of tree-topper stars, decorative tinsel, and it’s sparkle adds a dreamy quality reminiscent of Christmas lights. See what I mean about the 12 holidays and gold going hand in hand?

Matching black and gold during the holiday season is a wise choice. Black is a great color to wear out at night and the gold stands out against the dark staple, highlighting the outfit while making a statement and adding slight softness. In this outfit, I matched a long sleeve black dress with a statement necklace and a black and gold clutch. The loose fit of the dress allows me to feel comfortable, but also keeps me looking elegant and glamorous. I matched this ensemble with a pair of black closed toe wedges. The shoe choice is interchangeable. If you are not interested in the closed toe wedge, or if you don’t want to wear a black shoe, you have plenty of options. You could change the complete look of the outfit by wearing an open toe black shoe and painting your toenails a shimmering gold or even a bright red. Too monochromatic for your taste? Feel free to forgo the black shoe and make the shoe the statement of the outfit. In another version of this same outfit, I chose to wear glittering gold heels. The best part about this black and gold color palette is it’s versatility - whatever your taste and personal style might be, you’re sure to stand out however you choose to incorporate these colors into your holiday outfits. You can find the dress and clutch at Primark for a reasonable price. The shoes can be found at Charlotte Russe, and the necklace from Mirina Collections. All together this outfit is easy to find and affordable for any fashion guru on a budget. You can be glamourous during the holiday season just by starting with the basics, and to me, “the basics” means starting with black. I love my black and gold ensemble and I will definitely be using this color palette throughout the holiday season.

Traditional Boho, traditional, and Chapstick aficionado, Devon has been blogging for quite a while. All the Best, Devon was created to explore what makes Devon smile in both decor and fashion. District caught up with Devon in the midst of creating an online decor shop. We talked Scotland, Christmas Strolls on Nantucket, her times with Kiel James and Sarah Patrick, Ralph Lauren, and so much more. 14

What is All the Best, Devon all about?

What era most inspires your fashion for the blog?

It’s about all the things I love: fashion, décor…things that put a smile on my face.

It depends on the day and the mood I’m in.

How did you get started blogging? I used to work at Kiel James Patrick and the photoshoots for Classy Girls Wear Pearls were so much fun. Once I took my current position I missed that - and just having fashion being such a large part of my life in general - so I decided to start my own blog.

We see you a lot on “Classy Girls Wear Pearls” and the Kiel James Patrick Instagram. How did you become friends and what is the craziest adventure you have gone on with them?

I worked for them after I graduated college and have been friends with them ever since. As far as crazy adventures, it’s impossible to pick just one. You can’t plan with them. Something crazy and unexpected always seems to happen. Just last night Kiel was running around Newport with a Jack-o-lantern on his head.

Your blog seems to hit on interior design and fashion. What about those two areas inspires you? Pretty things make me happy. I like the creativity of putting an outfit or a room 18 together.

Where would you like to see your blog go in the future? I want All the best, Devon to become more of a lifestyle blog, and not just fashion and interiors. I’m looking forward to including other things such as events, celebrations, recipes, and do it yourself home décor projects.

Are you working on any exciting projects? Yes! I’m working on my own online décor shop. It should be completed in the next few months.

Describe your style in one sentence. I would describe my style as a mix of boho and traditional.

Where in the world would you love to do a fashion photo-shoot? I have heard Scotland is beautiful and would love to do a shoot there

What is your favorite fashion brand to wear?

There are way too many to choose! I really love Joie and Ralph Lauren. Theory is one of my favorites as well. To admire? Dolce and Gabbana, Zimmerman, and Isabel Marant all have the most beautiful things.

19

20

21

22

What are the three biggest beauty staples in your daily routine? I’m not that into makeup, but I always have my hair done, I can’t live without Chapstick, and I make sure to put on perfume before I leave the house (Jo Malone’s Woods Sage & Sea Salt is my favorite!)

If you could choose one big festival to go to this year, what would it be? I don’t know if it classifies as a festival, but I’d like to go to the Christmas stroll on Nantucket.

What is your favorite place to travel in the world?

I actually love where I live. I can walk everywhere, the ocean is right there, and my friends and family don’t live too far away. From time to time though, I take day trips to Boston. I went to college there and sometimes miss the energy of city life.

If you could only choose one outfit to wear for the rest of your life what would it be? Probably jeans, navy blazer, white oxford shirt, and brown riding boots.

If you could have dinner with any fashion designer who would it be? Ralph Lauren

How can we all be more like Devon?

I don’t know if the world needs more Devons, haha.

Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for thinking of me! I am flattered to be in the company of all the other great bloggers that I’ve seen in District. 23

Dry NO More

T

Get rid of dry skin this winter ASAP

here’s no doubt that winter is a magical time of the year, but it can seriously wreak havoc on your skin. If you’ve noticed that you’re prone to dry, flak,y and cracked skin this time of year, it’s time to change up your skincare and hair care routines. The best thing you can do for dry winter skin is get into a good routine and really give your skin the TLC it’s going to need. It’s easy to get lazy in the warmer months when all your skin needs is a quick wash and a bit of sunscreen. Now, your skin will need layers of moisture to fight the stinging cold. Also, don’t forget to exfoliate. If your dry skin tends to flake off, exfoliating is vital to get rid of those dead skin cells. An excess of flakiness can cause breakouts and no one wants that. If you’re looking for a multi-purpose and budget-friendly option, try coconut or argan oil. You’re going to want to stock up on these miracle workers for the winter. It’s a miracle moisturizer that can be used as a hair mask and even all over your body. Be careful with the face, though, as it can cause breakouts. Here’s a list of our go-to products to get through the dry winter months:

30

Spectrum Essentials Coconut Oil // Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Intensive Hand Cream // EOS Lip Balm // Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Mask // Dove Extra Dry Cream Oil Body Lotion // Pond’s Dry Skin Cream // First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration // L’Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil with Almond Oil // Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief

Resolve It

B

Five healthy new year’s resolutions for you

elieve it or not, 2016 is almost here! One of our favorite things to do around this time of year is start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. Resolutions sometimes get a bad rap, because most of the time we don’t stick with them. The key is to set resolutions that are realistic, and don’t get frustrated with yourself if you can’t stick to it every day. Here are five (healthy) resolutions we’ll be making this year:

#1 Lose (or gain or maintain) weight

This is a great goal, even if you’re not trying to shed serious pounds. It’s always a good idea to watch what you eat, but the key to making this resolution work is to not get worked up about it. Start by setting realistic goals and don’t expect overnight success. Also, plan for bumps in the road. Use a food journal to keep track of what you eat and have a support system in place.

#2 Make time for family

It’s easy to make time for family when you’re with them around the holidays, but once the New Year starts it tends to get more difficult. School/work schedules get the best of us and family relationships take a back seat. This year, make an effort to call your parents, siblings, or other relatives more often. Maybe even schedule a FaceTime or two! In a technology-fixated era, it’s never been easier to stay in touch.

#3 Save money

If you’re college or just entering the working world, this one might be difficult, but it’s always a good idea to have a savings account—no matter how small. Set a goal for yourself to save a certain amount of money each week. Even if it means sacrificing a Starbucks latte here and there, you’ll be glad you did it!

#4 Reduce your stress

This one might be easier said than done, but there are a few things you can do to relax more this year. Long work hours, little sleep, no exercise, poor diet, and not spending time with family and friends can contribute to stress. So make an effort to sleep more, eat your vegetables, and visit home a little more often.

#5 Get more sleep

The benefits of getting a full eight hours of rest every night are endless. Unfortunately, not very many of us actually get that amount. A lack of sleep has been linked to a greater risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. So go to bed an hour earlier or stay in bed on a Saturday. You deserve it! What resolutions will you be making this year? 34

Big Dreams = Big Success

#

1 Create a Vision Board – Take the time to sit down and really think what you want out of life, not only professionally,

but personally. With today’s technology you don’t even have to make a trip to Hobby Lobby to make one of these, unless you want to. I have seen vision boards created on a bulletin board, inside a planner, a Pintrest board, desktop home screen, etc. Create and place it somewhere you will look at often. #2 Create a Roadmap – Without a plan, a dream is just a wish. You can dream all you want, but unless you have a plan of how you’re going to get there, it’s pointless. Big dreams take more than a day, a week, a month, or a year. These types of dreams take time and several steps to get there. #3 Don’t Limit Yourself – Even though 36 you may think some of your

10 Ways to think BIG

aspirations are out of reach, put them on the vision board. Nothing is impossible and that is getting truer as technology enhances. Nothing should be out of reach! Successful people did not put a limit on themselves. Reaching for the stars and trying to do the impossible should be your goal! Dreaming big should not be unrealistic, your dreams should be your goals, your aspirations. By not putting a limit on what you can do will allow you to think, do and act freely without doubting yourself. #4 Get a Mentor – Find someone who is in a field you aspire to be in or has accomplished something that you admire. This person can help guide your decisions and steps to reach the goals that you thought were unattainable. Having someone to motivate and guide you can open more doors than you could imagine. A fresh and outside perspective on your goals and dreams can brighten the light at the end of the tunnel

when you think all hope is lost and you want to give up. #5 Meet Different People – New people means a new perspective on things. By interacting with different types of individuals you develop a broader sense of perspective. Now something that you had seen one way, you can see in several different ways just by stepping into the shoes or perspective of someone else. For example, steel beams had mostly been viewed as something to be used for structures, now they are shaped and morphed into large pieces of art across the country. #6 Don’t Be Cookie Cutter – I swear I amaze people with my “type” of things, from clothes, cars, houses, and even guys. I hate the thought of having something that is just like what everyone else has. I have always wanted to be a little different than everyone else and I believe that has helped me over the years in several ways. You cannot succeed by being like everyone else because whether it’s a job interview, social gathering or since Miss America was Sunday, pageants. Cookie cutter people do not leave an impression on anyone and often blend in with the rest. Strive to find something that makes you different from others and run with it. #7 Travel – Traveling gives you a sense of the magnitude you can become. A household name in a small Podunk town in Kentucky is an unheard of name across the country. Traveling gives you a drive to reach more than just the people you know. I believe traveling is good for the soul, you are driven by the success and humbled by the struggle that you see. #8 Use Social Media – Believe it or not, I believe social media has given young entrepreneurs the drive to be the best. Word of mouth travels a long way and now within seconds using social media. Like my last point of traveling, social media gives you the opportunity to travel without moving from your coach. It allows you to step into others’ lives and grow. Successful young entrepreneurs have used social media to engage and expand their following, plus get a glimpse of what the competition is doing. I use social media to gauge what is making others successful and the process they are doing to get there. Bloggers and

Youtubers have been able to make a living from their passion, which should inspire anyone. Social Media can make you or break you, and without it you’re non-existent in today’s society, so take your dream and use social media to get to where you want to be faster by seeing what works for others. #9 Find What You Love – I am a firm believer that if you love what you do, you will not work a day in your life. Instead of the dreaded feeling of work, just to get paid, you find a passion that will not only bring you financial freedom but the passion will alone bring success. Successful people do not hate what they do, they do it for more than the money. Their vision usually consists of solving a need, enhancing lives, etc. A small hint, finding what you love can take time and it can take a lot of effort. I went to school, interned and worked for companies until I found what I was passionate about, it took many years but when you find it, it is a remarkable feeling. So find what you love and success is inevitable. #10 Don’t Give Up – Ever! Nothing comes easy! You see examples of that every day. Through continuously teaching, learning and evolving yourself you will be able to get out or in any situation you please. You are going to be put down, rejected and turned away before your dreams come true. You will always be competing with someone else, so it is the small things. The small actions that help build your dreams and then allow you to achieve them. If you don’t succeed, try, try again. You will learn from your mistakes and those mistakes will turn into fire that will fuel your dreams even more.
