First word WELCOME TO THE JULY/AUGUST EDITION OF BUSINESS DIRECTION For many of the businesses in Herefordshire and Worcestershire we have seen a small but none the less positive growth over the last quarter. Certainly many of our companies that export are still seeing and taking advantage of opportunities overseas. Eric Brown who has been the Director of the UKTI international trade for a number of years has now moved on, he has taken on a regional role that we wish him well with. He has certainly made a positive contribution over the past 17 years. Linda Smith and her team will continue to provide excellent support to companies across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, so if you are considering exporting for the first time or looking to expand into new markets I would encourage you to give them a call. Over the next few months we will be building up to our annual awards which is to be held this year at the Three Counties Showground on Thursday 20 September. The awards highlight business excellence across the two counties and have acted as a springboard to regional and national success. The closing date for the awards is Friday 13 July so make sure you get your entries in! This edition of Business Direction represents the wide range of Sports and Leisure in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and beyond, celebrating a variety of activities. One of the more unusual ones being a large number of Japanese tourist visiting rapeseed oil fields in Worcestershire.

The Chamber is also welcoming new patron members, West Bromwich Albion Football Club who are becoming more and more active in the two counties, supporting a variety of community initiatives and working collaboratively with other sporting venues and clubs. Worcestershire’s two premier league sides, Worcester Warriors Rugby Team and Worcester Wolves Basketball Team both had excellent seasons and look to build on that next year. In the near future, the Wolves will be playing all their home games in the new arena. Herefordshire is gearing up for their Herefordshire Diamond Day to be held on Wednesday 11 July, on the King George V playing fields near Hereford city centre. This will include communities groups from around the county and will include a wide range of groups that contribute to life in Herefordshire. They will be highlighting the diversity and richness of the communities and feature sports, music, dance, local arts and crafts, voluntary groups and charities as well as providing an opportunity to showcase businesses and industries associated with the county.

HOGE 100 LAUNCHES ITS NEW INTEGRATED SOFTWARE PRODUCT Hoge 100 have just launched Greentree a comprehensive out of the box solution suitable for SME’s and mid-sized businesses. It provides a remarkable range of functions; from Finance and ERP to CRM, HR and Payroll. It’s all there in one integrated product and it’s very, very flexible. Managing Director Stuart Wild says: “This is a whole business solution, more than a group of business management tools it enhances the essential collaboration that drives business forward in today’s competitive markets. Gone are the days when users will make do with disjointed systems, with data dotted around all over the place, customers want integrated systems. Many packages can be fragmented providing part of the solution and often require expensive consultancy at the backend to hold them together.” Just two months after becoming a Greentree partner, Hoge 100 secured its first customer, leather goods manufacturer JR Tusting, a family firm with a history spanning 130 years. Stuart see’s a burgeoning market for the product in the distribution and manufacturing sectors, because it aligns with the type of functionality that these sectors require, this made it particularly attractive to JR Tusting. Hoge 100 is a technology and business specialist, starting out 23 years ago developing software for parcel carriers, it branched out into financial systems implementation, writing bespoke software and developing its own box office system. Hoge 100 has built a solid customer base working nationally with companies with turnovers ranging from £1m to £40m. On a final note, Stuart dismisses economic gloom holding businesses back, he says: “Hoge 100 has just had its best year ever, business are expanding and investing to increase productivity and improve efficiency.” www.hoge100.co.uk

CARDIAC CARE DEVELOPMENTS AT WORCESTERSHIRE ROYAL HOSPITAL Heart attack patients from Worcestershire and Herefordshire requiring lifesaving primary angioplasty treatment will soon be able to be treated at Worcestershire Royal Hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week rather than having to travel to a heart attack centre in Birmingham, Coventry or Wolverhampton out of hours.

ARTRIX, BROMSGROVE: SUMMER PROGRAMME 2012

The 24 hours a day, seven days a week Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI) service is due to start from September 2012. This follows on from the successful implementation of a Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm PPCI service in January 2011.

The live programme features a wide variety of music acts from the Britain’s Got Talent’s saxophonist Julian Smith to Nya King’s Whitney Houston tribute. Comedy acts include Hardeep Singh Kohli and Kevin Bridges.

It is estimated that this will provide potentially lifesaving treatment to an additional 200-250 patients per year. Primary angioplasty is a procedure used to open the narrowed or blocked coronary arteries of the heart immediately after the most serious type of heart attack is diagnosed. The process involves a catheter being inserted directly into an artery in the leg and a balloon inflated in the blocked artery. The balloon expands the artery and a stent is inserted.

Artrix’s auditorium

Artrix’s increasingly popular cinema features 30 films, including new releases and some favourites back by popular demand with certain screenings in a variety languages. The development of a second cardiac catheterisation lab at Worcestershire Royal Hospital will enable lifesaving primary angioplasty treatment to be carried out 24/7.

The procedure is regarded as being the best intervention that produces the most effective results and outcomes for heart attack patients. www.worcsacute.nhs.uk

If you’re feeling more adventurous, book tickets for the outdoor screenings taking place at Avoncroft Museum to see ‘The Artist’ and ‘The Pirates in an Adventure with Scientists’ – just bring your own chair! Alternatively look out for the free bouncy castle and special drop-in activities! Artrix is a friendly and welcoming venue and was voted Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Community Enterprise of the Year 2011.’ www.artrix.co.uk

‘I DO’ – HEWETT RECRUITMENT RENEWS ITS VOWS

Hewett Recruitment unveiled an exciting new look at an event which renewed the organisation’s commitment to its clients and candidates. The reason behind the event was kept top secret in advance, with guests receiving invitations which cryptically invited them with the words ‘Hewett Recruitment is renewing their vows…. ‘. The new brand identity, with its umbrella logo and divisional specialisms, was then revealed amid much expectation and excitement to some 150 guests attending the celebrations at Spring Grove, West Midland Safari Park in May.

years and we always like to review and refine what we do – BUT the core values of the business have hugely remained the same and have served us very well so far. This led us earlier this year, to question everyone who has used Hewett Recruitment as a candidate or a client about why they chose to do business with us. I was delighted to be able to congratulate my consultants on a job very well done, and adjectives such as professional, knowledgeable, ethical, friendly and forward thinking, collaborative were frequently used by those we had surveyed. The feedback assisted us to encapsulate the different, specialist areas of work, shaping our future commitment to all the people we do business with, leading to this exciting new look.” The guests, comprising business professionals, other Chamber members, Mike Ashton, clients, colleagues and friends enjoyed champagne, canapés and cupcakes complete with edible branded icing to celebrate this next step in the successful life of Hewett Recruitment. Guest of honour was Olympic hopeful Amy Smith whose mother June has worked at Hewett Recruitment for 18 years. www.hewett-recruitment.co.uk www.nexuscl.com

Louise Hewett introduced the new brand to guests, and explained the strategic reasons behind its development, before showcasing a new promotional film on Hewett Recruitment. Colin Foxall, from Nexus Creative, a fellow Chamber Patron, which has partnered Hewett in the development of the new brand, also spoke to guests to reinforce the creative and strategic approach taken.

E-RESPONSE’S JOBS OUTLOOK E-response Recruitment’s latest job report comes bearing positive news: ‘Permanent hires are on the up’, stating that employer confidence is at a record high. Plans are now being made to increase permanent headcounts by 72% of employers in the majority of sectors over the next three months. In the longer term, employers are still planning to increase their workforce over the next year with a positive 69% stating so. Although certain sectors saw a decrease in demand over the last couple of months, Engineering & Technical certainly did not. This sector continues to show strength in temporary and permanent staffing. To coincide with this positive news, the ONS has revealed a fall in unemployment of 0.1% in the UK in the three months leading up to April 2012, with youth employment improving marginally. FUNNY BLOOD Funny Blood is a local organisation dedicated to raising awareness of a rare blood condition called Platelet Function Disorder Funny Blood was founded by Ruby Edwards in 2009 to raise awareness of her son’s blood condition. Ruby’s son, Noah, – was only one when he was diagnosed with the rare condition called Platelet Function Disorder with Thrombocytopenia. Funny Blood also raises funds for research into the condition by The University of Birmingham’s Platelet Group. This is also funded by the British Heart Foundation and the Wellcome Trust.

As part of the campaign (to raise awareness of Funny Blood,) Ruby and her family met the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street in December 2010 joining in the Children of Courage Christmas Party. Since receiving nationwide media coverage, Funny Blood appeared on BBC Breakfast TV in April 2012. LEGACY OLYMPICS - BRAZIL 2016 Following on from the London 2012 Olympics, UK Trade and Investment Team (UKTI) based at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce are looking to the future and thinking about the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil They want to offer as much support as possible to businesses who are planning on getting involved and investing in the next global sporting event. Brazil are also hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup which provides even further investment opportunities for UK companies in the same location.

soMe key eXporT facTs: Brazil is home to the largest and most successfully growing economy in Latin America, making it an excellent investment opportunity for UK companies. With this figure predicted to increase year on year by at least 20% per year.

ROMANIAN HEALTH TOURISM - AN OPPORTUNITY TO INVEST INTO A MARKET EXPECTED TO BE WORTH €50 MILLION BY 2015 UK Trade and Investment Team (UKTI) based at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce are currently working towards creating exporting opportunities for West Midlands businesses to access an untapped, multi-million value market. This is the fast developing balneal, (baths and natural spas) and health tourism market in Romania which is focusing on the city of Sibiu. This is becoming an increasingly popular sector of tourism for foreign visitors with around 60,000 tourists visiting Romania in 2010 seeking balneal and medical healing therapies. has been minimal. Many are in need of regeneration and schemes are in place to take action. When this is underway, starting with the area of Sibiu, health tourism market in Romania looks set to boom and potentially exceed its already high expectations. Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce wants to give businesses from the West Midlands the chance to be a huge part of this success.

LOCAL THERAPISTS TRIP TO BOSNIA WITH HEALING HANDS NETWORK Kathy Scott and Mel Harris of Hands On At Work have just returned from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, working with the survivors of one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history. They travelled there with a UK charity called Healing Hands Network spending two weeks treating around 70 clients each at both the clinic in Sarajevo and at the Charity’s Outreach Centres. The clients, referred by the Concentration Camp Unions and the Civil War Victims Association, are people with emotional traumas and horrific injuries caused by sniper fire and grenades. Others suffered abuse when in Concentration Camps or under House Arrest and have witnessed terrible things. Many are refugees from other parts of Bosnia. It was an incredible experience to work with and to meet such lovely warm people. www.healinghandsnetwork.org.uk

PEOPLE DON’T LEAVE COMPANIES... THEY LEAVE MANAGERS In my early days as a fledgling Regional Sales Manager I can remember being advised by my CEO that “people don’t leave companies...they leave managers” and as my own career has grown to the dizzying heights of Senior Management; I can now too often recall having watched really talented individuals leave their managers and head off to the greener pastures of a better enabled career opportunity. In many of these cases, my CEO of old had not been wrong. Heading off at a slight tangent, although the underlying message fits. I had the pleasure of listening to Sir Terry Leahy the ex-CEO of Tesco speak about his career, at this year’s Hay Festival. Sir Terry discussed how human psychology had formed an important part of his college education and the real merit he attributed to developing this early understanding of how to empower success in others. In summary, I believe both my CEO and Sir Terry Leahy to be correct. The real difference between success and failure in a corporation can be very often traced to the question of how well the organization brings out the great energies and talents of its people; in the current economic climate there is real merit in reducing the associated cost of high staff turnover and in bolstering our businesses passion for empowering employee over-performance. ‘BASEBALL IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA’ Hereford charity, Operation Blessing have released a new documentary film ‘Baseball in the Time of Cholera,’ telling one individual’s story to get at the bigger issue. Following its screening, it was awarded a Special Jury Mention. The filmmakers, David Darg and Bryn Mooser, started coaching and documenting baseball for the children in Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake. During their time in Haiti, they saw the disease ravage the people. They shifted their focus onto a boy, Joseph Alvyns. The filmmakers said: “Their progress as a team was growing in parallel to the spread of this horrific disease in their country. Suddenly, Joseph’s mother contracted cholera and died. Our film so far seemed almost insignificant and we made the decision to expose the tragedy, using baseball as the narrative.” To help Operation Blessing combat this outbreak, please contact us on 0800 849 5000 or at www.operationblessing.org.uk

GRINLOCK LAUNCHES NEW CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT BRAND We all know that a key element in business success is to be more interesting than your competition. You only need to look at the success of Alexander the Meerkat and Churchill the dog to realise that characters can be a highly attractive method in getting a brand noticed. GrinLock’s Chief Executive, Philippe Ingels, explains: “Over the past 25 years we’ve created a multitude of characters to help companies promote their services through the games and applications we develop. Rather than develop promotional material supported by characters it made more sense for us to focus on creating the characters specifically for a brand.” Based in Kidderminster, GrinLock has developed projects for well known brands such as Cartoon Network, Tropicana, Lloyds Pharmacy, and Egmont Publishing. Through ‘WAKSTER’ they hope to use their talent and experience to bring some ‘character’ to the marketing of local businesses. www.wakster.com

RESOLVING BUSINESS DISPUTES We all know that a key element in business success is to be more interesting than your competition. Steve Hancox looks at recent moves to encourage businesses to consider alternatives to court proceedings. On Tuesday 15 May 2012, CEDR (The Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution,) reported that the commercial mediation profession saves businesses around £2 billion per year in “Wasted management time, damaged relationships, lost productivity and legal fees.” Now the Ministry of

Justice has created a working party of professional and business organisations, encouraging them “To resolve disputes in a less costly and quicker way.” Michael Lind of the ADR Group, one of the leading mediation providers in the UK, has welcomed the proposal, he said: “This is a great initiative; businesses can control conflict, restore productivity and maximise shareholder value by shaping practical solutions.” For more information and to view a fuller version of this article, go to: www.stevehancox.com or email mail@stevehancox.com

The conference, training and teambuilding centre, on the Farncombe Estate near Broadway, won Gold in the Business Tourism category of the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012. Winners were selected for their use of best practice, quality and innovation throughout the business and for helping raise standards across the industry. Cotswold Conference Centre topped a Business Tourism Award short-list which included Ribby Hall Business & Conference Suite in Preston, Manchester’s Lowry Hotel and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The awards ceremony was held at the Athena in Leicester on Tuesday and the success marks the fourth Gold award that Cotswold Conference Centre has won so far in 2012. Richard Howdle, Operations Manager of Cotswold Conference Centre, said: “We’ve won regional awards, customer service awards and environmental business awards this year but there’s no doubt that this national recognition tops it all. It isn’t just that we were short-listed alongside some great venues which makes winning so special, but also the fact that it comes from VisitEngland makes it very satisfying. Big Interview

Inspiring voluntary work that led to an exciting new career “I remembered something that I heard when I was with Wrexham. Dai Davies, the goalkeeper, was an ex-schoolteacher and he used to say ’you can be in this game five minutes, five years or fifteen years’ so I started preparing for a time when I was not playing professionally.” The experience made a deep impression on Tony and when he came to face the possibility of retirement, the opportunity arose to work with the College again, as it was now based in Hereford, where he had been playing.

Tony Larkin Director of Commercial and Business Enterprise, Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford

Little could Tony Larkin have known when he was ploughing through the muddy fields of lower league football but he was preparing for life amid the glamour of the Olympic arena. A road that started with the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Hereford United has seen him now manage and coach the GB-England men’s blind football team, which will compete in the forthcoming Paralympics in London. The team is based at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford, where Tony works as Director of Commercial and Business Enterprise. Professional football was his first job and in a career which spanned fifteen years he made more than 450 appearances for teams including Everton, Wrexham, Shrewsbury Town, Carlisle and Hereford United. He first became involved with the Royal National College when he was playing for Shrewsbury. He said :”The College was in Shrewsbury at the time and I did some coaching for them, initially as voluntary work. I was still playing professionally but I was looking to life after the game as well and doing some coaching and training work.

He said: “I was thirty two and out of contract. My last club had been Hereford and there were a few professional clubs interested in me. “I could have gone back to Wrexham but it felt like going back in time and my family were settled in Hereford, we liked living here, so I applied for a part-time coaching post with the College.” “I went for the interview on the Monday morning and they said ‘when can you start?’ I took my first session that night. My time as a professional footballer was over and I have been at the College for 23 years now.“ His playing days were not quite over, though, as non-league Worcester City offered him a four-year part-time contract. During that time, his work with the College expanded, he qualified as a mobility instructor and as a blind and partially-sighted football coach. He now runs training sessions for other coaches from around the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. He said: “My job at the College has grown and I do not really do teaching now. I concentrate instead on developing the College’s commercial activities but the College has been very supportive and I have retained my connections with sport, not jus football but a range of games.” But football remains his first love and he coaches the GB-England men’s blind squad, which is based at the College. Under Tony’s guidance, the squad qualified as Great Britain’s entry for the 2008 Paralympic Games after finishing runners-up to Spain in the European Championships in 2006. He has also lead them to

seven European Championship and to four World Championships and the team are currently ranked second in Europe and fifth in the World. Tony also played a key role in establishing the United Kingdom’s first football academy for visually impaired players, based at the College and officially opened in 2008 by former England footballer Sir Trevor Brooking. It offers visually impaired students the opportunity to include football as part of their study programme with a view to playing the game at a national level and, in 2010, the College hosted blind football’s World Cup. Tony sees all of these developments as a crucial part of growing the College. He said: “My job now is to oversee much of our development and we are putting in a lot of investment. We have a new sports complex and halls of residence and other areas have been revamped in addition to the academy. “We like local businesses to be involved in what we do. When the College staged the Blind World Cup in 2010, local businesses benefited from the event. It had a massive impact. “We had ten countries sending teams and we made sure that everything they used, taxis, hotels, food, was supplied by local companies. “We are also developing training packages which companies may be interested in using, and we run conferences and similar events, which all allow local businesses to benefit from what we can offer while supporting our work as a charity at the same time. “Having the national Blind team based at the College is good for us as well. It raises the profile of the College, particularly ahead of the Paralympics. We are one of the top sides in the world and to have the team based here is good. There are some strong teams competing in the Games, Brazil are the favourites, but I think we have a good chance of a podium finish.” *If you run a company and wish to contact Tony to discuss working together, he can be contacted on 01432 376600 or email Tony.larkin@rncb.ac.uk

ADVERTORIAL

POISED TO LEAD St Mary’s headmistress reflects on what makes a good leader “It is a fact that any young girl graduating from university today, like as never before, will need the skills and resilience to enjoy a life where she will be pursuing a career whilst maintaining a pivotal role in the family.” So says the Headmistress of St Mary’s, a successful independent day school for girls situated in a Victorian mansion in Worcester’s city centre which is aiming to be a centre of excellence for the education of women leaders. “When I took up the headship of St Mary’s, I was privileged to join a thriving school. The girls at St Mary’s regularly achieve excellent academic results which enables them to go on to great universities. “Our girls perform at the highest level in sport, music and drama and they enjoy an extraordinary range of extra-curricular activities. All of which helps to forge

each girl’s particular skills and qualities at a deeper level than any string of grades can ever reflect. After all, there are no A*s for determination, integrity, responsibility, kindness, common sense or a positive attitude to life. “I therefore had to ask myself what do I want for a St Mary’s girl in the future? My answer was simple. I want to prepare her to face the challenges of being a successful leader of tomorrow. “In the future when girls at St Mary’s are ready to leave school I want them to be better equipped for a life in which, both at work and in the home, they can make their mark in the world.” To this end, St Mary’s has introduced a new leadership programme which is interwoven into the curriculum. Research and development carried out by the school has identified the key attributes of good leadership. A good leader is someone who is curious, confident and creative. A good leader will know their own mind, be independent of thought making decisions when they need to, but will also be comfortable working

with a team and possess the enthusiasm and drive that will inspire others. From the moment a girl begins her school life in Reception class at St Mary’s they are given every opportunity to develop the skills that will transform them into the leaders of tomorrow and are regularly assessed and recognised for their achievements. So whether it be the children in The Stables nursery working together to create a colourful mosaic for their entrance hall, or girls in the Sixth Form developing and marketing their own business, St Mary’s girls learn how to think creatively, to recognise each other’s strengths and talents and inspire each other to work together to achieve their common goals. As Mrs Jawaheer says: “When competing for a place at the best university or trying to gain that important first step on the career ladder, it is more important than ever before to stand out from the crowd. I know that with a St Mary’s education behind them, our girls will be leading the way!”

I therefore had to ask myself what do I want for a St Mary’s girl in the future? My answer was simple. I want to prepare her to face the challenges of being a successful leader of tomorrow. 026

PUPILS GET CLOSE TO THE ACTION AT HEREFORD RACECOURSE Pupils from Lord Scudamore Foundation School were given the opportunity to get closer to the action than most at Hereford Racecourse during a Racing to School Day managed by the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST). Educational activities, which tested their maths skills in a variety of practical applications around the racecourse, were enhanced when the youngsters were given the chance to meet some of the jockeys and present the trophies to the connections of the winner of the second race which was named specially to mark their visit. Lead Education Officer Ollie McPhail said, ‘Maths days are a very popular part of the Racing to School programme, and the Racecourse provides terrific opportunities to study practical maths. “In the Weighing Room we can talk about weights and measures and the basic principles of handicapping, and the students can conduct risk assessments to determine how many horses could safely fit in the Parade Ring. Out on the course we look at fence construction and cost, and some of the geometry that is involved when a horse jumps a fence.” “Hereford Racecourse and the jockeys in the Lord Scudamore Racing to School Handicap Chase really

went out of their way to make it a special day for the pupils which I am sure they will remember for a long time to come.”

VENTUTEC DUO SET FOR SECOND SUCCESS Local Worcestershire entrepreneurs expand through the acquisition of Dorset based domain and hosting business, Gridstar. Established in 2009 by Kevin Savage and Jason Smith, Ventutec Ltd is a successful web and mobile app development agency, based in Worcester city centre. Since inception, the agency has grown from strength to strength, working with some high profile clients and launching chart topping iPhone apps including Celebalike, which continues to receive high profile media and TV interest.

One of the aims of the duo is to spread their own entrepreneurial spirit, providing the tools and inspiration for new businesses to start-up and grow online. Siteopia has recently run multiple initiatives aimed at business startups and young entrepreneurs in the making. Such as offering cost-price and free co.uk domain names, website builder packages, website hosting, exhibiting at London’s ‘Business Startup Show’ and providing free information and domain names to students of Worcestershire’s educational institutions. The Siteopia team aims to highlight the importance of a strong and prosperous online presence, making the web accessible to all.

Well-known in the UK’s domain name registration and web hosting market, Kevin and Jason previously created and grew their former Internet company, Namesco Ltd, based in North Worcester, to be the UK’s fourth largest ISP. Having sold Namesco in 2007, their entrepreneurial passion kicked in again and they launched a complementary Ventutec brand Siteopia.com, a fully featured domain and hosting business.

Siteopia continues to grow month on month through marketing, networking and word of mouth. Most recently, the company made its first strategic acquisition, acquiring Gridstar Networking Ltd, a domain name and hosting company with a customer base spanning Europe, USA, Malaysia and Japan.

Jason Smith said “New businesses will be a driving force behind the UK’s economic recovery, we want to give entrepreneurs the inspiration and tools they need to start up and grow their venture using the web. We hope to help businesses launch, access new markets and create new jobs. We launched Siteopia. com, utilising all our existing knowledge to give customers superior products, automated systems and great service. Worcester is a fantastic city in which to live and work and we are glad to be one of the cities entrepreneurial successes stories.”

Richard Houchin, RGS Head of Department, said; “he felt privileged to welcome such an influential and knowledgeable speaker to talk to his pupils.” He also pointed out the enormous value this opportunity presented to the Business Studies students. The attending pupils came from Bewdley High School, Malvern St James, King’s School, John Kyrle, Worcester Technology College and RGS Worcester. WOODFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL BECOMES AN ACADEMY After much hard work and a lot of patience, Woodfield Middle School has converted to Academy status, from Friday 1 June 2012. They received a letter on Thursday 31 May from Michael Gove, Minister for Education, confirming the schools new status. The process, a number of our local schools have followed, means they have to meet high standards and strict regulations it is a great credit to the management teams of these schools. Woodfield have taken positive steps to achieve this including

engaging with the local business community through working with the Chamber. Jason Beardmore, Headteacher said: “This move will help us continue to create new approaches to learning, and to concentrate on developing ‘the whole child’, for example, in opening doors to later life and the world of work. With some of the best results in the county last year, it is hoped that the new status will help us raise our standards even higher and offer new and exciting opportunities to current learners, future learners and the wider community. www.woodfield.worcs.sch.uk

MAKE YOUR STAFF BRAND ADVOCATES! We’re all familiar with Social media tools, like blogs, Twitter and Facebook and these are a great way to give staff the freedom to become ‘brand advocates’. The more you can show what your staff are like and the culture of your business, the easier it is to display your brand’s personality or qualities to your potential customers. Every business has a persona, but often this doesn’t come across on boring inward-looking announcements. If a business takes the time to think about its personality, and how this is reflected in everything it does, it will stand a much better chance of differentiating itself from its competitors and attracting new customers. Almost every business needs to promote itself in some way, reaching out to both existing and potential customers.

The MeDia ... anD yoU! Have you ever wondered why some people ooze creditability, charisma and confidence on camera when others look like novices? Presenting your business to camera requires different skills and techniques to that of presenting to a group or an audience. Bringing creditability and confidence to camera presenting is a must in its own right! “Over the last couple of months I have seen some excellent examples of businesses representing themselves in the media. The opportunity can be brief but very beneficial. The Chamber is therefore providing a course for representatives of companies to help provide them with the skills to handle the media, television in particular.” Mike Ashton - CEO Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

BRANDING THE BUSINESS AWARDS 2012 BEHIND THE SCENES As one of the sponsors for the Business Awards 2012, Worcester based marketing agency NinetyFive Creative have created the logo and branding for this year’s awards. Here they take us behind the scenes to explain the creative process behind the brand:

creaTive DevelopMenT After a briefing session with the Chamber, we agreed that the design needed to capture the excitement surrounding 2012 as a result of the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee, with the colours red, white and blue whilst conveying the success and sophistication of an awards evening.

With this is mind, our creative team produced several concepts, providing a mix of contemporary and traditional ideas for consideration. Each one proved popular for different reasons, but the Chamber asked us to develop one of the concepts further by incorporating some of the design elements from the additional options. Creative Director Ben Barnes explains the theory behind the chosen route: “The design needed to incorporate all elements of competition and winning the British way: preparation, anticipation, the ‘battle’ and the excitement of the win! Combining the flowing red and blue lines into a ‘ribbon’ to signify crossing the line enabled us to execute this perfectly. It also reflects the Chamber of Commerce colours, while the shape compliments this year’s sponsor - Worcester, Bosch Group.”

BranD in acTion NinetyFive Creative have already applied the design to a range of marketing channels, including website banners, invitations and the application form. They’ll also be preparing a range of display materials for the ceremony. Visit the awards section of the Chamber website to view the branding: www.hwchamber.co.uk

DEMAND FOR INDUSTRIAL UNITS OUTSTRIPS OFFICES The industrial manufacturing and warehousing sector is thriving, while the office sector continues to recover. writes John Dillon, Managing Director of Bromsgrove based JP Dillon Commercial Property Consultants, about the Worcestershire commercial property market.

Typical is start up manufacturing company Delta Cam International, which my agency advised on its property needs, delivering it significant savings on a 10-year lease on a 9,124 sq ft unit at Great Western Business Park, Worcester, where it expects to create 25 jobs in the next year.

There is a significant demand for good quality industrial units of between 10,000 sq ft and 20,000 sq ft across the county, as manufacturers look to either expand or relocate to Worcestershire. This demand is driven by the excellent communications provided by the M5, M42 and A38, the flexible workforce, the positive attitude of the county and district councils, and the fact that the county is a very pleasant place to live and work.

The county’s office market continues to recover from its low point in Summer 2011. An oversupply means that rents and freehold prices remain competitive, offering good opportunities for new occupiers. Take-up was boosted significantly by our letting of more than 14,000 sq ft at Avon House, Bromsgrove, the biggest in the county for five years. John Dillon

HEREFORD ENTERPRISE ZONE APPOINTS MANAGING DIRECTOR AS INTEREST GROWS We are delighted to be able to make our first significant appointment and look forward to welcoming Mark to the HEZ in July. As the project develops, further appointments will be made to help build upon the successful start-up Ray has developed. John Jarvis leader of Herefordshire Council

The Hereford Enterprise Zone board is pleased to announce the appointment of a Managing Director to the Hereford Enterprise Zone (HEZ). The appointment has been made as a result of early success in generating interest in the site – over 50 businesses have expressed an interest in locating to the new facility. Mark Pearce will be joining HEZ as Managing Director from Sunday 1 July 2012. He comes from a senior role at Advantage West Midlands. His goal is to manage the development of the new Skylon Park and he will be supported progressively by a full team of staff and specialist partner organisations. Members of the HEZ board, have paid tribute to Chairman of the Board, Ray Stone, who has stepped down from the role.

year, Ray, a well-known local business leader, has worked tirelessly to drive the scheme forward, all on a voluntary basis. “Ray has been a great ambassador for the Zone – we wouldn’t be where we are without his drive and ambition and the enthusiasm he has brought to the scheme,” said the leader of Herefordshire Council, Councillor John Jarvis. “He has a wealth of knowledge and experience which has brought tremendous focus to the creation of the Enterprise Zone. His hard work over the past eight months has laid the foundations for a successful future. We are enormously grateful for all the voluntary work he has undertaken on our behalf. “We are delighted to be able to make our first significant appointment and look forward to welcoming Mark to the HEZ in July. As the project develops, further appointments will be made to help build upon the successful start-up Ray has developed.”

M5 ‘PINCH POINTS’ RESTRICTING GROWTH – WORCESTERSHIRE LEP Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership has lodged a plea for vital improvements to two critical junctions on the M5. It has been warned that the pace of economic growth will be at risk if nothing is done. Junction 6, serving Worcester (North), is deemed most in need of attention, with Junction 4, serving Bromsgrove, not far behind. The LEP, in association with the county council, wants money allocated from the Highways Agency’s Pinch Point programme. Peter Pawsey, Executive Chairman of Worcestershire LEP, said both junctions represented “serious pinch points”. He cautioned: “Junction 6 is undoubtedly the more major of the two, its capacity being raised as an impediment to pretty well all significant development to the east or north of Worcester City and within its environs. “While further improvements to Junction 6 have been agreed in respect of the proposed Worcester

Technology Park phase 1, there are several other major development proposals in the pipeline for the area, each of which will create additional traffic at the interchange. To look at it another way, capacity constraints at the interchange will inhibit the economic growth and job creation in the Worcester area and across the county. “We strongly believe therefore that a more significant and permanent solution to Junction 6 is vital if we are to succeed in our efforts to generate growth and employment in the region.” Asking for early discussions and a meeting with the Agency, Mr Pawsey noted that the same arguments were ‘absolutely valid’ in respect of Junction 4, though the immediacy of known pipeline development proposals was not as acute. “However Junction 4 is an important gateway to developments south of Birmingham and within the adjoining Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, as at Longbridge, and we are therefore fully supportive of efforts to improve the interchange.”

Peter Pawsey, executive chairman of Worcestershire LEP

MALCOLM SCOTT CONSULTANTS’ CLIENTS BENEFIT FROM SIMPLER PLANNING REGIME Malcolm Scott Consultants’ clients are feeling the benefit of the Government revoking 44 planning policy documents and reducing them to 58 pages of The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). A number of projects have been able to utilise the simpler guidance and the presumption in favour of sustainable development. Whilst sustainable development is not a new concept in the planning system, Malcolm Scott Consultants have worked with clients to produce well thought through proposals in order local planning authorities can readily see a scheme is clearly sustainable: economically, socially and environmentally.

The planning system does not stand still; new advice is continually being issued. The simpler NPPF is welcomed, but it is expected further advice will be issued or the old advice will be returned to plug ‘gaps’ in guidance. Planning Minister Bob Neill referred to revoked guidance and stated he wanted to find ways of preserving the ‘learning which has been assembled over the years’. The previous planning system was cumbersome and sometimes ambiguous but it appears from Neill’s comments that it may not have entirely disappeared. In a recent study of Chartered Town Planners nearly 9 out of 10 thought the new NPPF would result in more appeals. However, Malcolm Scott Consultants strive not to take an application to appeal unless absolutely necessary, and are making best use of new and previous guidance to ensure the appeal process is a last port of call. This strategy has proved successful for many clients, reducing costs and time. This success has enabled the practice to take on extra staff, and it now has 7 professional staff, plus administrative support, to continue helping clients throughout the region in difficult times. Throughout the recession the practice has continued to grow its professional staff, and Malcolm Scott Consultants envisage another busy year ahead. NAILING A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A NEW CAREER! Ki Health and Beauty salon in Lowesmoor has announced the launch of its new training company for nail technicians and beauty therapists

PATENT BOx - A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR INNOVATIVE COMPANIES The 2012 Budget confirmed that a new ‘Patent Box’ regime will commence in April 2013 to make the UK one of the most competitive tax regimes. The aim is to provide an opportunity for limited companies to have relevant profits taxed at the rate of just 10%.

The Nail Training Company Worcester is the first of its kind in Worcestershire, and has been set up to run both NVQ courses in nail services and beauty therapy together with international product brands to students across the region.

Rules are not simple and require a calculation to exclude income arising from the value of the brand. For small companies with less than £1m relevant profits, a simplified calculation can be chosen.

The Nail Training Company has different training packages from Product Training companies to NVQ levels from City and Guild, all fully accredited which will allow students a wide variety of future career choices.

The relief will not start until April 2013 and will be phased in over a 4 year period, but this does apply to existing patents acquired before April 2013. It is important for companies to be rethinking their IP strategy now to benefit from the ‘Patent Box.’

Funding opportunities to attend the courses may also be available. www.kihealthandbeauty.co.uk

GET THE LOWE DOWN ON THE NEW SOLICITORS IN WORCESTER Tracy Lowe has bucked the trend by recently opening her own firm. Lowe’s is situated in the middle of Worcester and specialises in Family Law.

years experience in Family Law. Tracy says that every business needs its USP – in the case of Lowe’s she says ‘I am that person’. www.lowes-solicitors.co.uk

Tracy Lowe commented: “Whilst the cost of litigation is an important factor so is service, especially in such a sensitive area as marital and partnership breakdowns which often involve children and complex financial issues. For many clients it is vitally important that they see and talk to the same person throughout the course of their case; that when they attend Court that same person is “standing by their side” and help them find the strength to make difficult decisions.”

TECHNOLOGY AIDING ECONOMIC RECOVERY Business confidence has recently meant an increase in the number of job vacancies being advertised, with Job Centre Plus reporting 643,000 in the last quarter of 2011. With so many applicants-per-position, recruitment is a daunting task, however recruiters are taking more steps to reduce the time and cost, but without compromising the chances of finding a quality applicant.

Tracy Lowe, who has previously worked for local firms, Harrison Clark and Thursfields, has many Tracy Lowe

One such cost-cutting measure, and one that helps employers identify the best applicant for the role is that created by Nuts and Bolts It, a web-based candidate filtering tool.

Nuts and Bolts It enables recruiters to create questions and benchmark answers they wish to receive in a 1st stage interview. The software automatically analyses the responses and provides the recruiter with a league table of interested candidates closest to their benchmark answers. The benefits of the system is a clear reduction in the labour costs of filtering candidates, flexible user options available whether pay-as-you-go or monthly subscription. NEXT ISSUE .... Human Resources

The next edition of BD will focus on Human Resources so for the last word for this edition we are focussing on the Chamber’s HR service HR in Action. As a leader/owner of your organisation you know your people can be both your greatest asset but also your biggest headache. What is often lacking is confidence to change practice and to face up to issues you know need addressing. Both may stem from a fear of the consequences if things go wrong and just not know how to proceed. This is where HR in Action’s service comes in. The purpose of HR in Action is to get the thinking and practice in place which will enable you to make the most of the people you have, create a workplace which people want to be part of and enable you to achieve success through your people. When difficult decisions are to be made about poor performance, you need to reduce staff costs or you are concerned about health and safety, one of the consultants will also be there to support you. This service complements the telephone HR provision and recruitment service available to Chamber members. The difference is that they provide professionals to discuss your opportunities and issues with you face to face. A friendly, local based, approachable and knowledgeable face who aims to keep the jargon to the minimum and help you reach an effective solution to what is on your mind. The HR in Action service is provided by a network of human resource professional, all qualified members of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development or other relevant body and, like you, Members of the Chamber. Each one of us covers a range of specialist areas which means that between us comprehensive service is provided. They have all been through a quality assurance process to join the network, work to professional standards and have professional indemnity insurance. All of them run their own businesses but join together to provide this service for Chamber members. The HR in Action service is able to help you across the whole range of people management and development needs including:

In the UK, HDOT has been in use for the treatment of people with Multiple Sclerosis since the early 1980s. Many of these patients also have other medical conditions, which seem to respond to HDOT. HDOT is also used in the treatment of sports injuries. In simplistic terms, blood is saturated with oxygen at up to 300% for short periods in a pressure chamber, thus enabling a higher percentage of oxygen to reach an injury even where the blood supply may be restricted. Oxygen is a major player in the reduction of tissue swelling or damage. Herefordshire MS Therapy Centre (01432 261249), based in Mostyn St, Hereford, is able to offer HDOT treatment to individuals and sports clubs. Please contact the Centre, daytime for further information. www.herefordmscentre.co.uk
