Welcome to iDev!

Are you interested in teaching courses offered through Distance and Online Education, but aren’t sure what to do first? Do you wonder how to convert your current course material to something accessible online? Or would you like to develop a new course for online delivery?

If so, you are in the right place.

Our goal is to create a learning environment that helps guide faculty through the best practices for using and delivering educational media. Our team offers assistance to faculty with instructional design services and the creation of content delivery strategies.

Members of the iDev Team

The iDev team consists of individuals essential to the delivery of successful distance education. When a course is offered through Distance and Online Education faculty members have access to the following professional staff: , • Instructional and faculty support coordinators • Instructional designers • Application and media professionals • Distance Education librarian

The instructional designer’s expertise was instrumental in creating the new distance education class, Introduction to Health Care Professions. Logistically, this class was impressive in scope, with the inclusion of lectures from over 30 professionals in five colleges across the University of Iowa campus. We were also on a tight production schedule, the designer I worked with was willing to work long hours to see this course to fruition. She excels at considering the student’s vantage point in the learning process. In sum, working with Distance and Online Education was a truely collaborative process. Because of this, the end result was remarkably better than it would have been.

Course Development Agreement

Distance and Online Education can provide faculty with a development stipend of up to $5,000 for developing a new online course. Faculty collaborate with our instructional development staff to ensure effective online pedagogy and create/adhere to a course development timeline to be eligible for compensation.

To organize the development process, faculty work together with an instructional designer to outline a plan and timeline for development. That plan is documented in a course development agreement which describes the work that needs to be completed, who is responsible for which aspects of development, and when the course will be finalized. The amount of development compensation provided is determined by the amount and scope of work described in the agreement, and payment is initiated when the course is finished and ready for students.

We initiate compensation for development or revision when all course components are finished and ready for students (i.e. syllabus, course modules, media, quizzes, exams, other).

Compensation for Course Development: The amount of compensation agreed upon is based on a finalized course plan that includes the components listed above with the expectation that you will offer the course a minimum of three times over the next five years. The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) follows the University of Iowa’s policy on intellectual property, which is available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/v/30.htm.

Course quality is paramount in the DCE. To create high quality courses, and maintain the number of courses we support, development must happen on schedule. Any delay in development of course materials compromises course quality. Changes in the completion schedule have a ripple effect which also compromises the quality of other courses DCE development staff are supporting.

Faculty must meet the deadlines identified in this agreement or DCE course support will be postponed to a future semester.  First missed deadline: Faculty member receives a letter reminding them of this agreement.  Second missed deadline: Faculty member and DEO are given the option of postponing the course offering and are notified that DCE course support will be postponed with third missed deadline.  Third missed deadline: DCE support is withdrawn for course offering until further notice.

Administrative Support Distance and Online Education offers administrative support to academic departments in the following ways: • If a course is new, the department must submit a course approval form to the Registrar’s office.

• Once the department has approval for the course title and number, they enter the course on the Maui system and send the course information to Distance Education for approval.

• Distance Education reviews the course information for accuracy and sends to the Registrar’s office for listing on MyUI.

Tips to Maximize your Time and Relationship with your Instructional Designer 1. Come prepared to every meeting 2. Create a work plan with the ID and then work the plan (stay focused) 3. Know what you want/need help with, for example: learning objectives, creating content, organizing content, utilizing multimedia, transitioning your class from face-toface to ICON, creating practice activities, and more 4. Be committed to making progress 5. Know your limits and ask for help when you need it 6. Stay on schedule and have reasonable expectations of yourself and the ID, taking into account that your ID is working on multiple projects 7. Meet regularly and tackle small pieces rather than big chunks 8. Be open to constructive feedback

The iDev Team Instructional and Faculty Support Coordinators After you indicate you are interested in utilizing the iDev team services, you are assigned an instructional and faculty support coordinator, the first line of support for all Distance Education course–related issues.

Here are just some of the services provided by your coordinator: • Advise on best practices for distance course delivery • Work with departments to ensure courses in MyUI/MAUI information system are listed properly • Advise and identify faculty training on use of ICON • Assist with student-related issues such as enrollment and special permission • Coordinate exams, help with set up of online exams on ICON, and arrange for proctored exams via DE Exam Services • Schedule media specialists to train on use of lecture capture and virtual classroom software • Schedule and monitor production of course media including lecture recording, virtual classroom scheduling and video conversion • Work with lead instructional designer assigned to your course to implement teaching strategies to achieve course objectives

Instructional Designers Instructional designers (IDs) make educational content better by: • Working with faculty • Developing objectives and ensuring content matches those objectives: Is it a learning want or a learning need?

• Structuring content and activities for student learning • Helping create media to support learning (audio, images, video) • Developing assessments/practice activities • Adapting instructional materials to another delivery method (for example, adapting materials from face-to-face classes to ICON) • Consulting on engaging learning activities or better practice activities Services Include: • Review of course objectives • Survey and recommendation of pedagogy • Review of evaluation to support objectives • ICON support • Development of media for online delivery Services Do Not Include: • Content authoring including creation or population of test banks and/or practice activities • Identification of readings • Office support (photocopying) • Student grading

Application and Media Professionals Our digital media production professionals work with you to put the technology in place to capture your course content in an effective and dynamic manner. Here are some of the services we provide: • Media editing and conversion for web delivery (lecture capture, trimming video and enhancing audio, and callouts) • Identification and training on lecture recording software • Training for virtual classroom operation including a training guide for classrooms • Recommendations on educational media creation best practices (team–based communications and support) • Evaluation of hardware for virtual classrooms • Distance classrooms and virtual classroom sessions with setup and monitoring

Distance and Online Librarian The Distance Education librarian can connect you with both the services and the research to help make your course more successful.

Marketing Our marketing department works with you to develop a marketing plan that targets audiences for your new course, both within the university and to other institutions and organizations.
