RESIDENCE FOR SEMI - PERMANENT POPULATIONS Evaggelos Zouglos 2/2008 Supervisor: D. Papalexopoulos Dealing with urban space as one of the principal concepts of urbanity and without attaching to it any property of ambivalence, this thesis aims at the activation of such a space in the center of Athens by creating a state of residence by semi-permanent populations- basic elements of conurbation. Accommodation of such heterogeneous populations which are moving not within the scope of an alternative’ nomadism but social need, often accounts for the modification in concept and usage of many public spaces of the city. Having two standardized container measurements, high cube 10 ft (2.44X3.05X2.89) and high cube 20 ft (2.44X6.10X2.89) and by the rationale of ‘all in the shell’, emerge two units of portable residence, which combined, create spaces maximum livable in contrast to minimum of carriage, in a sense banking on the parameter of time in such a living condition. The space un-
folds by sliding parts emerging from the shell and containing one function of residence each, whereas some standardized plug-in capsules will ‘button-up’ on the free sides of the shell including functions adaptable to the user’s needs. Inside, the stay-space can be set by the user with the aid of panels that slide freely in the already existing structure of the metal drives of the ground. On the selected unbuilt space at the junction of Iera Odos and Leonidou, i am floating an already specified as to the spot and boundaries network of such units, whose lay-out codes constitute not a de facto state of town planning proposal, but a chart- an equation- spark for the implementation of similar states of residence in diverse urban spaces and different each time locations.
