The Cattle Business is Tough at the Best of Times

Allan Munroe, the owner/manager at Killarney Auction Mart, said the extended drought, cold, harsh winter, and extended cold spring months hurt the cattle industry. In May 2021 due to the drought the Killarney Auction Mart sold cow/calf pairs almost every week. It was heartbreaking at the time. By Harry Siemens Allan Munroe, the owner/ manager at Killarney Auction Mart, was moved by the plight of a struggling cattle producer and friend so he wrote and posted this article on the Auction Mart’s Facebook page. It garnered over 50,000 views in the first 12 hours after posting. “After an extremely challenging year, life for cattle ranchers and farmers is not getting any easier,” said Munroe. “Most have spent the last 12 months fighting to keep the grass in front of their animals

all summer. They baled straw, cat-tails, Kochia and anything else to have enough feed for the long winter. Despite a good open fall, winter set in before Christmas and is struggling to give up. Calving is always a challenging time.” “Those that calved in January-February-March made full use of their facilities and barns with one of the coldest winters in recent history. They needed to be on their game 24 hours a day to keep calves alive and protected from the extreme elements,” Munroe continued.

“When we finally reach April, the weather is going to get more temperate and make for easier calving. For many producers, spring weather means they can handle more cows at calving time with a much smaller investment in barns, sheds and expensive infrastructure,” said Munroe. Fast forward to what happened with the weather in April and May. The frustrated auction mart owner said that normally quads, calf-catchers or horses and ropes can handle most situations.

“Cows have no problem weathering a spring storm but two weeks of snow, rain, and 80 km/hour winds is more than most can take,” said Munroe. During the storm, it is pure survival mode. However, the cows get exhausted and calve in less than usual conditions with the extended cold, wet, windy weather. “I have never seen mature cows drop their calf and walk away as I witnessed during the last storm. The calf then needs to go somewhere warm and Continued on Page 3...

AgriInsurance Seeding Deadline Extended for Soybeans Manitoba Agriculture and the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) recently announced the extension of the AgriInsurance seeding deadlines for soybeans starting in 2022. The full coverage seeding deadlines for soybeans are now June 8 in Soybean Area 1 and June 4 in Soybean Areas 2 and 3. In addition, soybean growers in these areas will now be eligible for insurance if planting occurs in the five days following the full-coverage seeding deadline. However, coverage will be reduced by 20 per cent. The full-coverage seeding deadline for Soybean Area 4 continues to be May 30 with no extended seeding deadline coverage. These changes are permanent and will be part of the AgriInsurance contract going forward. The changes were made in consultation with the Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers Association after a review of available data and agronomic considerations such as growing season length and the use of varieties that are more adapted to Manitoba conditions since the seeding deadlines were last considered. These changes are not expected to materially change the risk to the AgriInsurance program and therefore there is no change to premiums as a result. MASC is not considering seeding deadline extensions for other crops at this time. The final spring seeding deadline for many major crops is June 20. AgriInsurance contract holders who are unable to seed by June 20 due to wet conditions are eligible for Excess Moisture Insurance. MASC clients are encouraged to connect with their MASC Service Centre if they have questions about AgriInsurance or are looking for resources to assist in dealing with wet conditions.
