REPORT IMPACT 2023

As we bid farewell to 2023, I am honoured to reflect on the significant achievements, challenges, and growth that have characterized this transformative year for Dismantle. Across all business units, our team has showcased exceptional dedication, fostering positive outcomes for at-risk youth throughout Western Australia.
Throughout the past year, Dismantle proudly engaged with over 300 young people across all business units. Our flagship outreach program, BikeRescue, not only increased its graduation rate since 2022 but continued its impact throughout Western Australia’s metro, regional and remote communities. Meanwhile, ReNew experienced steady growth, culminating in a monumental achievement as we surpassed $1 million in award wages paid to our youth employees. BikeDr. achieved success not only in its trade activities but also in creating meaningful shifts for our youth employees.
Turning our gaze externally, two pieces of research in 2023 have helped Dismantle better understand and quantify our impact, both from Centre for Social Impact, Swinburne University of Technology. The first was the Evaluation of the Payment by Outcomes Trial 3, First Interim Report (November, 2023) which highlighted the unique wrap-around supports provided by social enterprises as the key differentiator to more traditional models of service provision which is unlocking outcomes for the cohorts working in those social enterprises. The second was Understanding the Impact Costs of Work Integration Social Enterprises (November 2023) which helped us to isolate and understand the Impact Costs that make our model effective (costs that commensurate, nonsocial enterprises businesses do not incur including additional employee, property and external training costs). Both of these pieces of research are helping us to strengthen our business model, communicate our impact and advocate more broadly for social enterprise.
As the newly appointed Chair in 2023, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated supporters, clients, staff, volunteers, and customers. Your collective efforts have played an instrumental role in achieving Dismantle’s goals and bringing about positive change in the lives of at-risk youth. Here’s to a fruitful and impactful 2024, as we continue our shared mission of empowering young lives and dismantling disadvantage.

Dismantle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live. We pay respects to their Elders past, present and future and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s Impact Report, a testament to the incredible journey and impact we have achieved in empowering disadvantaged young people. As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of social challenges, the need for our collective efforts has never been more evident.
In the face of an escalating cost of living crisis, we find ourselves confronted with the harsh reality that our most vulnerable youth are bearing the brunt of these challenges. This year has seen an alarming increase in the struggles faced by disadvantaged young people, making our mission at Dismantle ever more crucial.
This year we celebrate 10 years of BikeRescue, our flagship program. Over the past decade, BikeRescue has empowered over 4000 at-risk youth by imparting practical bicycle mechanics skills, fostering empowerment, and instilling selfbelief.
Additionally, I am thrilled to announce a major milestone achieved by our social enterprise, ReNew. Through this initiative, we have reached an outstanding achievement of $1 million in wages paid to disadvantaged young people through meaningful employment opportunities.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated community. On behalf of the team here I’d like to thank everyone that has joined and supported our journey and is walking alongside us. In particular, thanks to our clients and customers that are choosing to utilise social procurement within their supply chain and purchasing decisions.
As we look to 2024, our commitment remains. We will continue to adapt and evolve, strengthening and seeking new and effective ways to be proactive to the evolving needs of young people in our WA community.

In 2023, we celebrated 13 years of BikeRescue, Dismantle’s flagship youth development program. BikeRescue creates a platform for participants to learn to rebuild bikes guided by youth mentors disguised as bike mechanics. This unique setting provides a platform for crucial discussions with participants about their lives, aspirations and mental health. This year, the program continued to expand across the state, including 28 programs and 250 participants.
The program’s holistic approach goes beyond technical skills, fostering personal development, communication, social skills, confidence, and teamwork. By intertwining skill-building with mentorship, BikeRescue offers a transformative experience for its participants.

“Over a 10-week period, I observed a transformation in these young men. They became fully engaged in the program, showing a level of respect towards their mentors that was truly remarkable. I had the privilege of witnessing their growth firsthand when they shared their experiences at local primary school assemblies while donating the bikes they had worked on.”
“{This experience has} demonstrated the remarkable impact of the BikeRescue program, and I wholeheartedly endorse it to anyone seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.”
We’re thrilled to celebrate our flagship program entering its teenage years, and we couldn’t be prouder of BikeRescue’s achievements. From humble beginnings with just two programs in metro Perth to expanding to 28 programs across all of WA by 2023, the growth has been remarkable.
Here’s a quick look at some of the impact BikeRescue has made. To us, this program is so much more than these numbers; it’s witnessing the growth in participants’ selfesteem, fostering a sense of community, and hearing about the lasting positive effects on young people’s lives in the years that follow.

The story of a BikeRescue graduate clearly shows this process. 14-yearold “Sasha” described feeling like she was useless and that no one cared about her. She said she was bad at school, had no goals, and didn’t have a space to talk about her challenges. Despite this, she turned up to program every week and became more confident in talking to other participants, making new friends. Sasha started talking about the future and a potential career with hope, revived her love of mountain biking and took the bike she built out on her favourite trails with her new friends. At the end of the 10 weeks she said that ‘the program has helped change the way I see myself’ and ‘to see that there is good in the world’.
ReNew Property Maintenance continued to make significant strides in youth empowerment and community impact this year. Connecting at-risk youth with entry-level employment opportunities, ReNew Property Maintenance delivers highquality commercial property services while delivering much needed social impact; a foot in the door to the workforce.
Servicing over 30 new and existing commercial clients across the Perth Metro, in 2023 ReNew expanded its service offering to include tree works and residential landscape packages. This expansion of ReNew’s service portfolio goes beyond increasing work opportunities; it aims to diversify skill sets among youth employees, enhancing their employability in external job markets.
With 50 youth employees in 2023, our goal is to give our young people a foot in the door to employment, helping them break the long term cycle of disadvantage. ReNew works closely with Dismantle’s in-house case management program, JobReadii, to support and mentor the youth employees, focusing on both personal and professional development and future employment pathways.

50 Youth employees employed with ReNew in 2023.
In 2023, we’ve observed remarkable moments and have been fortunate to play a role in our young people overcoming substantial challenges. Among these success stories is Michael, a dedicated youth employee who recently transitioned out of the JobReadii program, securing employment with the City of Stirling. Michael’s story extends beyond finding a job; it’s a testament to his personal growth and determination in taking charge of his own path.
Having spent nearly three years with ReNew, Michael started with minimal work skills and struggled with his confidence. The ReNew Property Team pushed Michael out his comfort zone on new job sites, while providing training and lots of second chances when “life stuff” disrupted his engagement at work. Through sheer determination and hard work, he swiftly evolved into a reliable and disciplined staff member. Progressing to a full-time role, Michael consistently went above and beyond, contributing to the maintenance of the workshop and vehicles after his shifts.
The JobReadii Case Managers could see Michael’s potential and eagerness to grow both personally and professionally. The first big step in his journey was being nominated by JobReadii for The Wanderer Program, which provided him with the opportunity to pursue driving lessons. Soon after, he obtained his driver’s license and saved for his first car. Armed with this newfound independence, Michael set his sights on the next step, applying for job opportunities. With assistance from JobReadii in creating a resume and writing job applications, he successfully secured a position with the City of Stirling in their landscaping team.
We congratulate Michael on his achievements and wish him continued success in his new role with the City of Stirling. After almost 3 years of dedicated work, the ReNew team will miss seeing Michael’s face every day, but we can’t wait to hear about what’s next for him!
JobReadii is Dismantle’s in-house case management and professional development program to provide support for each young person on an individual basis. Designed to help young people with the skills they need to move into the workforce and provide a safe space for open conversations about the unique hurdles young individuals face.
Whether it’s supporting young people through personal struggles, stepping in with crisis management care or helping them transition to further education, training or employments, JobReadii ensures constant support throughout each person’s journey. JobReadii not only plays a pivotal role in providing emotional support while young people are with Dismantle but also serves as the instrumental tool for transitioning youth employees into external employment, education or training. In 2023, JobReadii successfully transitioned 15 young people into external employment or training.
