Coastal Plains District scouts pay tribute to the fallen

S

couts from the Coastal Plains District of the Sam Houston Area Council marked Memorial Day 2025 with service, reflection, and tribute across Fort Bend and surrounding counties.

Through participation in ceremonies and service projects, youth from Cub Scout Packs and Scouts BSA Troops honored the legacy of those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

In Fulshear, members of Troop 941 served as the official Honor Guard during the Memorial Day ceremony at the Irene Stern Community Center. Scouts presented and retired the colors, assisted with a ceremonial flag folding, and represented their chartering organization—the Brazos River Rotary Club—with distinction. The Troop received thanks from the event’s hosts, including the Fulshear-Simonton Lions Club, the Texian Exchange Club, the Fulshear Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Fulshear.

In Houston, Cub Scout Pack 1199 participated in the Flags for the Fallen project at the Houston National Cemetery. Scouts placed flags at the graves of veterans as part of a meaningful act of remembrance and respect.

Pack 129 of Needville joined their community’s local Memorial Day service, offering a moment of reflection and a message of gratitude: “We owe it all to those who gave it all. Heroes are never forgotten.”

In Rosenberg, Troop 801 observed Memorial Day with a solemn flag retirement ceremony, honoring the American flag and those who defended it.

At the Fort Bend County Memorial Wall in Richmond, Cub Scout Pack 133 partnered with VFW Post 3903 to present the flags at the county’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at the historic courthouse.

Scouts helped kick off the program and stood in honor of the fallen throughout the event.

“Memorial Day is a time for reflection and gratitude, and I’m incredibly proud of how our Scouts across the Coastal Plains District stepped up to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country,” said Andrew Van Chau, Coastal Plains District Chair. “Through ceremonies, flag presentations, and acts of service, our youth are not only learning patriotism—they’re living it.”

Sandy August to lead the Arc of Katy

W

ith nearly two decades worth of leadership experience and as a respected leader in the nonprofit sector, Sandy August will now head the Arc of Katy as its executive director, effective July 14.

The Arc of Katy is a Katy-based nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to be included as respected and active members of the community, and

what August will bring to her new position is 18 years of leadership in fundraising, strategy, and community-building combined with the same amount of experience in driving growth, cultivating meaningful partnerships, and advancing missions that serve others.

“Sandy emerged as the clear choice amongst a highly qualified pool to lead The Arc of Katy into its next chapter,” said Cherie Duddridge, president of the board of directors. “Her strategic mindset, relational leadership style, and unwavering dedication to building communities where everyone can participate fully and live with purpose make her uniquely qualified to guide our mission forward.”

Most recently, Mrs. August served as Director of Major Gifts at St. Francis Episcopal School in Houston, where she led high-impact philanthropic initiatives and strengthened donor engagement.

As executive director, August will oversee operations, fundraising, strategic planning, and community engagement efforts. She will work collaboratively with staff, board members, and community stakeholders to expand

programs and deepen The Arc of Katy’s impact on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

HURRICANE WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO PREPARE

W

ith a 15-foot storm surge and winds of

more than 135 mph, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration characterized the Galveston hurricane of 1900, a Category 4 storm, as the deadliest natural disaster in US history, with 6,000 to 12,000 killed. Since the 1950s, when the U.S. National Hurricane Center began naming storms, Texas has been impacted by more than 20 hurricanes classified as Category 3 or higher.

These assertions alone underscore the significance of hurricane preparation. In May, Forecasters within NOAA’s National Weather Service predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. As of this magazine’s publishing, the expectation is at least 13 storms and up to 10 hurricanes. Three to five of those hurricanes are expected to be major ones.

While hurricanes pose significant challenges, business owners and families can prepare for hurricane season in advance.

A proactive approach to hurricane season can minimize the effects of these powerful storms and reduce the likelihood that individuals will be involved in accidents or suffer injuries.

Many shallowly rooted trees will be snapped or uprooted and block numerous roads. Near-total power loss is expected with outages that could last from several days to weeks.

Category 3 Hurricane Winds 111-129 mph (96-112 kt or 178-208 km/hr). Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damage or removal of roof decking and

Hamburgers with Stilton Cheese, Caramelized Shallots and Mushrooms

Hamburgers are a staple of backyard barbecues. When summer arrives, few foods embody the laid back vibe of the season better than grilled hamburgers. There’s nothing wrong with a traditional approach to hamburgers, but going the extra mile and augmenting the flavor with some special ingredients can make these beloved summertime staples even more popular. If that’s your goal, then consider this recipe.

INGREDIENTS For caramelized shallots: 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1½ lbs. fresh shallots, peeled & sliced Salt, to taste 1 tablespoon sugar For mushrooms: 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 clove of garlic, minced 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced For hamburgers: 1½ lbs. ground sirloin, chuck or round Coarse salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 slices Stilton cheese 4 hamburger rolls or sandwich rolls 1 tablespoon melted butter Lettuce leaves INSTRUCTIONS For caramelized shallots:

Melt butter with olive oil in a thick-bottomed pan until the oil is shimmering. Add the sliced shallots and stir to coat. Cook, stirring on occasion, for 7 to 10 minutes. Do not let the shallots burn or dry out. Sprinkle the salt and sugar over the shallots.

Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently. If shallots seem to be drying out, add a little water or oil to the pan. Shallots should be brown but not burned. Continue to cook and stir; scrape up all the browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan, until the shallots are a deep, rich, browned color.

For mushrooms: Melt butter with oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in balsamic vinegar, garlic and mushrooms. Saute for 20 minutes, or until tender.

For hamburgers:

Moisten your clean hands with cold water and divide the ground beef in 4 equal portions. Form into a flattened ball. Season with salt and pepper.

Refrigerate until ready to cook.

Prepare the grill and preheat to high.

Brush the grill grate with oil.

Place the prepared burgers on the hot grill grate. Grill for 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium, or until an instant read thermometer inserted through the side of the burger into the center reaches 160 F. Brush the rolls with melted butter and toast them on the grill for about 45 seconds. Assemble the burgers, with lettuce leaves, Stilton cheese, caramelized shallots, and mushrooms. Serve.

Youth Fashion Week is the epitome of ‘confidence, creativity and cultivating future leaders’

ttention Fort Bend County youth: ignite your passion for fashion July 15-17 during Youth Fashion Week, a 3-day, immersive experience designed to spark creativity, teach practical skills in fashion and beauty, and introduce participants to the dynamic world of design, styling, and entrepreneurship.

During this camp, developed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Fort Bend County, students ages 9–16 will explore every angle of the fashion industry — from sewing their own designer accessories and learning how to accessorize, to participating in live industry tours and showing off their final looks in a professionally staged Designer Challenge Fashion Show.

“Youth Fashion Week isn’t just about clothes — it’s about confidence, creativity, and cultivating future leaders in fashion and business,” said Leticia Hardy, County Extension Agent- Family and Community Health. “Each activity is carefully crafted to give students real-world insight, hands-on experience, and a platform to shine.”

Puzzle Fest features game swap and speed competition

F

ort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library (14010 University Blvd, on the UH campus in Sugar Land) will have a Puzzle Fest – complete with a Puzzle & Game Swap and a Speed-Puzzling Competition -- on Saturday, July 19, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, in Meeting Rooms 1 and 2.

Donations of gently used puzzles (250 or more pieces) or board games for the swap will be accepted July 1 through 18, at the 2nd-floor Reference desk. Those donating puzzles or board games will receive a voucher noting the number of items donated. The voucher can be used at the Puzzle Fest on July 19 to select the same number of items to take home.

Any unclaimed puzzles or games will be used for library programming or donated elsewhere. Please donate complete puzzles and games only, without any missing pieces.

The Speed-Puzzling Competition at the Puzzle Fest will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Teams of up to four people will have 2 hours to complete a 500-piece puzzle with the winning team receiving a prize.

Registration is required for this competition, which is open to all ages.

Teams can bring sorting trays and magnifiers for the event if they wish; none will be provided.

Additional activities will take place throughout this year’s event, including a Head-to-Head Speed Sudoko, a Rubik’s Cube Challenge, and a Puzzle Relay Race. Casual puzzling and refreshments will also be available.

Fort Bend County Libraries recognizes the educational, social, and mental-health benefits of play for all ages and offers a variety of opportunities throughout the library system for individuals to come together to play on a regular basis. Entries sought for “We Are Fort Bend” photo contest

ort Bend County Libraries is seeking entries for its “We Are Fort Bend” Photography Contest. Amateur photographers of all skill levels are invited to enter original, photographs that portray the culture, nature, people and places of Fort Bend County as they relate to the 2025 theme of “Vibrant Colors of Fort Bend.”

To be eligible for competition, contestants must submit a printed copy of their photograph – no larger than 8”x10” – by July 21. Entries can be submitted at any FBCL location.

A panel of judges will determine the top three winners, and prizes will be awarded for 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place. The public will have an opportunity to select two “People’s Choice” winners, who will also receive prizes for 1st- and 2nd-place. Judging for the “People’s Choice” winners will be conducted on FBCL’s Facebook page and website between July 24 and August 6. Photographs will be anonymous until after the judging is complete.

Winners will be announced at a reception on August 9 at George Memorial Library in Richmond. Photos will be displayed in the Bohachevsky Gallery at George Memorial Library, as well as on a virtual gallery on FBCL’s website, from August 11 through September 26.

All entries must be original, unpublished, and the work of the person submitting it. Only one photo may be entered per person.

Digital manipulations of the photos should be limited to: cropping, re-sizing, red-eye reduction, and reasonable adjustments to color and contrast.

FBCL reserves the right to display any entry to this contest for an indefinite period of time. Entries will be exhibited for the general public to see, so they should be appropriate for all ages to view.

The photographer is responsible for obtaining verbal or written release for public use of the photo from all identifiable individuals in the photograph submitted; the photographer accepts all liability from the use of a photo where this release has not been obtained.

The contest is open to amateur photographers only. Professional photographers, who earn a living by selling their photographs, are not eligible to participate. The prizes are sponsored by the Friends of the George Memorial Library.

Girl Scouts enjoy hands-on, summertime lessons about the balance of nature

chool may be out for the summer, but learning hasn’t stopped for a group of Girl Scout Daisies.

The kindergartners and first-graders attended a morning camp last month in Rosenberg hosted by the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners where they learned about earthworms, ladybugs, parts of a flower, mason bees and what plants need to grow. Moms who sat in the back of the room also got a chance to participate in some of the activities.

“She’s really been enjoying Girl Scouts and learning all sorts of different facets of it,” said Hannah Gallo of Conroe who attended with her daughter, Izabella. “Gardening is something that’s wonderful — not necessarily one of my skills — but we’re really excited to come and learn from the Master Gardeners and get her exposed to other folks and what all you are passionate about so she can learn from you.”

ant to Adrianna Murrillo of Houston, whose daughter Amaya participated in the camp. “I definitely wanted her to learn activities regarding the yard and garden work area,” said Murrillo. “I think it will bring good value to her life and enable her to do some of the stuff being taught here in the future.”

The girls started by learning what plants need in a lesson taught by Master Gardener Annette Beadles of Richmond, and later in the morning, Beadles helped the girls make a beehive for mason bees.

Master Gardener Donna Blackburn of Sugar Land, who is also the FBMG Youth Activities Director, talked about parts of a flowe, while Master Gardener Vivian Schott of Katy said the scouts were excited at the learning opportunities and that “their minds are just open to anything.”

The Daisies also had a hands-on experience with Red Wiggler Worms in an introduction made by Master Gardener Lynn Lucas of Fulshear. Lucas said that the earthworm is one garden creature that can help plants reach all their needs. Lucas also talked later in the morning about the life cycle of ladybugs and how they benefit the garden by targeting insects that prey on plants.

“We have to allow them to have that handson experience,” said Lucas, who said she was once a Girl Scout and that the organization “taught [her] so much” and is beneficial for a child’s development. “ That’s how a lot of people learn. I think it’s a cool thing. Somebody taught me. I want to teach them.”
