Learn about our ocean-based science programs inside!

It’s been said that science that isn’t hands-on isn’t science at all. Science is not just a collection of facts. Facts are a part of science, but science is much more. It includes observing what is happening, predicting what might happen, and testing theories and understanding their outcome. Children learn science best and

understand scientific ideas better if they can explore and investigate and experiment. Hands-on science can also help children to think critically and gain confidence in their own ability to solve problems.

The hallmark of Discovery Cube is the impact that our hands-on, highly immersive exhibits, workshops, and assemblies have on children by allowing them to be

completely engaged in the experience. We teach STEM programs to over 300,000

students and teachers each year both on-site at Discovery Cube Orange County, Los Angeles, and Newport Beach and off-site in six counties across Southern California. If you want to be inspired, challenged, and confident in your STEM teaching and programming, please join us for a professional development session, bring your

students on a field trip, or have us come to your school to present a workshop or

assembly. Thank you for your dedication to the education of children and for your support of Discovery Cube!

- Tina Rolewcz Vice President, Education Discovery Science Foundation

Presenting

Discovery Cube’s Ocean Quest is the newest addition to the Cube family. Over the past year there have been new enhancements to the property and new programming for our visitors. Students and teachers will enjoy the exhibits, amenities, and educational boat tour aboard the Dylan Ayers. Explore the ocean like never before when you take a field trip to Ocean Quest. Interactive field trips include a boat tour of the bay, hands-on experiences on the patio, a crab catch from the pier, and exploration of the Science of Sailing exhibit. During the boat tour of Newport Bay, students will learn about our local marine environment and ecosystem. Hand-on experiences are grade specific activities that are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Ocean Principles. And don’t miss our Science of Sailing exhibit where students will learn about simple machines and how they are used on sailing vessels, explore various models of sailboats, and engage in hands-on learning experiences throughout the exhibit. You may also bring the ocean into your classroom with one of our Science-To-Go programs that focus on engineering principles, environmental stewardship, and innovation. From immersive learning and investigating exhibits to educational boat tours, there’s something for everyone to discovery at Ocean Quest!

If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales. - Albert Einstein, Theoretical Physicist

Kindergarten Listening, speaking and using one’s imagination helps develop the brain and language skills. Researchers have shown that how a brain develops (along with a belief of whether your own intelligence can continue to grow as you do) hinges on a complex interplay between your genes, the experiences you have, and how you approach learning opportunities. Discovery Cube provides children with creative educational experiences through our Early Learners’ programs and during field trips and in-school programs, that will increase their science-thinking skills and grow their imagination.

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

32nd President of the United States

1st Grade Young children have the ability to make observations, as well as compare and contrast items that are similar or dissimilar to each other; these skills are an introduction to thinking creatively and scientifically. Discovery Cube’s goals are to nurture young thinkers and explorers by providing them with enriching, age-appropriate activities, whether at the science center or your school. We’ve been told by adults that didn’t get the chance to do some of the activities presented in our first grade programs, such as investigate owl pellets, until they were in high school – we want to change that.

What one man can invent, another can discover. - Sherlock Holmes

Fictional Detective created by Author and Physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

2nd Grade The world of invention and discovery grows each time someone shares an idea with others. Plus, a team can accomplish more than a separate collection of individuals. Therefore, Discovery Cube designs and displays imaginative, large-scale, educational exhibits and provides inventive programs to young children and educators in order to share knowledge and a fascination with science, discovery and creativity – whether that creativity is based in nature (such as in fossils) or is handmade (by building and experimenting with ramps, for example). Try a Discovery Cube field trip or in-school program and you’ll agree.

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’ (I found it!) but ‘That’s funny’ ...

- Isaac Asimov Science Fiction Author and Professor of Biochemistry

3rd Grade

All of us want children to be curious. Exploration, experimentation and a sense of wonder is at the heart of knowledge. In this grade level, students display more independence, a longer attention span, and increased cognitive abilities. However, they are still thinking very literally, therefore abstract ideas can be very hard for them to grasp at times. So, Discovery Cube offers educational programs, both at the science center and in-school that provide students with hands-on, concrete objects to associate with abstract ideas, in order for them to explore science concepts at their level of understanding.

If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. - Sir Isaac Newton Physicist (paraphrased from a quote by Bernard of Chartres in the 12th century)

4th Grade In the fourth grade, children are at the age when they understand how to work in groups and can meaningfully contribute while working as a team member. Collaboration and information-application advances knowledge, therefore students can greatly benefit from each other’s insights and ideas. With Discovery Cube’s education programs, students can work together and learn from others, whether they are prone to thinking or tinkering. Hands-on, bodies-on and minds-on – they’re at the heart of the Cube’s mission in Orange County, the San Fernando Valley, and in your own classroom in Southern California.

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.

- Thomas Edison Inventor

5th Grade All of us want children to persevere; to keep trying and not give up. The most certain way for someone to succeed in anything they do is to try just one more time. Researchers have identified “perseverance” (“grit”) as one of the leading predictors of academic and career success. Not surprisingly, those with grit are more single-minded about their goals – they tend to get obsessed with certain activities. Discovery Cube provides in-school, after school, and on site opportunities for students to become obsessed with science, technology, engineering, and math. And our own gritty goal is success, not failure.

A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales.

- Marie Curie Physicist and Chemist

Middle School (6th - 8th grades) When one combines a sense wonder with a desire to help others and the ability to think beyond what is currently possible, you have the necessary skills to change the world‌.. and perhaps the heart of a sixth grader. As students enter their middle school years, they find themselves caught in an interesting world between wanting to be an adult (thinking as an individual) and hoping to be a part of something bigger than themselves (whether a clique, a club, or other) and at the same time, maintaining a childlike fascination of the things around them. Through on site, after school and in-school programs, Discovery Cube wants to inspire and guide these students toward responsible and productive courses.

What we do see depends mainly on what we look for... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the coloring, sportsmen the cover for the game.
