Adobe’s announcement of Adobe Flash Player’s impending shutdown caused concerns for the existence of many nostalgic games and websites, many of which became somewhat true. This would mark a future of porting nightmares, big changes or even death for many nostalgic Flash-basedwebsites.Someofthebiggestconcerns were sites like Newgrounds and Coolmathgames, but more than the websites themselves, people were concerned about the lifespan of games hosted onthem.

Transgender Visibilty Day

TransgenderpeopleatDiscoveryHighSchool sharetheirstories

Nov. was Transgender Visibility day, so Digest wanted to listen to the experiences within our community at DiscoveryHighSchool(DHS).Inthisstory,we interviewed Riley Velazquez-Ridley, a sophomore student here at DHS and Ivy Frisbie-Sprouse, an assistant teacher at DHS. Bothofthemidentifyastransgender.

Transgender Visibility Day is, as the dedicated queer youth support organization GLSEN states, “dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people while raising awareness of the work that still needs to be donetoachievetransjustice.”

For many, those accomplishments involved overcoming oppression or the lack of informationonwhattheywerefeeling.

“For me I had a couple of moments where I realized that I was transgender. For me there was a time in high school, around my senior year, that I realized I definitely was not among the normal binary.” Frisbie-Sprouse stated. “I cameouttoacoupleofmyfriends.

Special guest tour Discovery High School

Architects from design convention tour Discovery High School

OnFriday,Nov. ,DiscoveryHighSchool(DHS) had architects tour the school as part of a convention. This annual tour included aspiring volunteers that strived to learn more about a multitude of school layouts and learning styles. This was part of a convention hosted by EDspace, whereinDHStoursarecommonplace.

Digest interviewed Principal Aaron Smith about the tours. Smith explained that the tours were led by DHS students and expressed his gratitude forthestudentvolunteers.

When Digest askedaboutthearchitects’opinions on DHS, Smith responded “a lot of positive feedback[and]wellspokentourguides.”

Smith said in a past interview with Digest that student voice was very important, given that some tours had students for tour guides. He said DHShasdonereallywellinthatarea.

At the time, I didn’t have the verbage or the vocabulary to explain [being] transgender, so at that time,Icategorizeditmoreascrossdresssing.WhichI didn’t feel comfortable with the term, but that was the closest thing to describe myself.” Aliferia Gonzalez, Digest’scopychiefandtransgenderwoman, reported having the same issue to (what she called) anunsettlingdegreeofsimilarity.

Velazquez-Ridley also spoke about their experience within-schooltransgenderdiscrimination.“Lastyear whenIlivedinthemidwest[SergeantBluff,Iowa],it was awful. Kids would bully me and multiple other kids. They’d be very passive aggressive, very religious, and I got told things like ‘go to church’.”

Velazquez-Ridley continued. “Teachers wouldn’t respect pronouns, students obviously didn’t do anything.Itwasn’tawelcomingenvironment.Outof thatentireschoolonlymysmallfriendgroupandone teacher actually listened and cared out of the many other kids. So, yeah, it was very harsh.”

Velazquez-Ridley also spoke on the same issues occurring in Flordia, stating, “same thing with Florida, especiallywiththeDon’tSayGaybill,

“I’ve been treated a lot differently since I came out, I’ve had kids be like ‘Why would you do that to yourself? You were so pretty as a girl.’” Velazquez-Ridley said. “The way people treat you very much changes. I think discovery handles this a lot better, identity is respected by teachers, however thatdoesn’tseemtobethecaseforstudents.”

Velazquez-Ridley expressed that he’d been treated better by teachers at Discovery, but that certain DHS students had acted unfavorably towards transgender people, ”A person in my grade wrote ‘ %’onourwhiteboardthathadalotofnicepositive things about being trans and being gay, and I had to google it and it [was in refence to the fact that] % of children who identified as trans killed themselves. [sic] It had turned to a very negative connotation of like ‘oh showing this to a trans person is internet slang to tell them to kill themselves’. Last year there was an incident where middle schoolers printed out and put very hateful imagery and words, like they printed out little cards that had very hateful things and put it all over the whiteboard that the GSA [gender sexuality alliance] had claimed as theirs and had put very nice stuff like pronouns and like different sexualities and what it means to educate [people], and some middle schoolers put stuff like that onitwhich…yeah.”∎

“I worked with a small group of teachers and architects for two years,”said Smith. One of those architectswashereforthetour,KarenMontovino. Montovino was part of the creation of DHS and helped Smith to form his idea of “a different philosophythanatypicalschool,”intoareality.

Stuff the bus is here!

The annual food drive is back again.

It's that time of year again! The leaves are falling, there’s a chill in the air, and the Stuff the Bus food drive has arrived. Stuff the Bus is an annual food and fund drive that started locally in . The donations support our local community food banks through the C.A.R.O.L. (Christmas Activities Relief Organization Limited) program and the Children'sHomeSociety.

The C.A.R.O.L. is a program ran by the Camas-Washougal Fire Department, providing food and gift baskets to local families with limited access to food for the holidays.

The Children's Home Society offers critical assistancetochildrenandfamiliesincrisisand provides food to the Hathaway Backpack program.

The Hathaway Backpack program supplies food-filled backpacks to students at local schools weekly and receives % of its food fromtheStufftheBusprogram.

Stuff the Bus is the largest food drive in the areaandcollects, onaverage, , poundsof food each year. This food can go towards helping feed close to % of Clark County residentswhorequirefoodassistance.

Stuff the Bus programs provide similar benefits to those in need around the country. Some highly-requested food items are canned fish and meats, hearty soups, beans, peanut butter, babyformula, juiceandotherdrinks,

instant oatmeal and cereal. But, even if you’re out of those, any donation helps to supportafamilyinneed.

To encourage students to donate this year, Discovery High School (DHS) has established a friendly competition to see which grade level can gather the most food. The winning grade will receive one spirit point.

Digest talkedtostudentstogettheiropinions onStufftheBus.

“It's great, [I think] more people should participate,” said DHS student Audrey Miller.

Another student, Kris Gilman, said it was “a goodthingtheyaredonatingstufflikethat.”

Gilman also expressed concern, stating, “usually canned food is really high in sodium and isn't that great for people… There are much better ways to support people who needit.”

Gilman suggested donating money directly to food banks is an alternative way to supportlocalpeopleandfamiliesinneed.

If you plan to make a donation, you have until Friday, Dec to do so. Food donations canbebroughttotheDHSfrontoffice, ∎

Discovery Advice Column

With Avery Perry

My best friend got a boyfriend and ditched me

This is a confession I was hesitant to respond to, but after further consideration, I've concluded it to be a common occurrence among high school students. The best advice I can give you, as someone who has been through this, is just to be there for your friend when they need you. If something with the boyfriend goes south, they know they will always have you. Also consider keeping that friend at a distance, so as to not hurt yourself. Remember that you’re an asset to them as much as they’re an asset to you. Relationships are a two waystreet;theyneedtoearnyourcompanyjustasyou’re offering it. If you find that they care too little, there’s a two whole schools of people to talk to in the Camas School District, you’ll find someone better worth your time.

I tripped over my cat yesterday

The only advice I can give you is to repair your broken relationship with your cat. Might I suggest a generous helping of their dinner or some extra treats for them to even consider forgiving you. This piece of advice may be biased as I adore cats. I will also be giving mine extra treats, even though I havenotsteppedontheirtail.

Once when I was seven years old I ate a box of Milk Bones and threw up on the carpet while I was watching Coraline.

I think it's funny that the Coraline movie made it into this confession, also, are you okay? After some research on dog food, specifically Milk-Bones, here's what we gathered: While it certainly doesn't look appetizing, nor (probably) taste any good, the answer is yes. Humans can safely eat their pets' food, although I would strongly advise against eating a whole box. That turns too quickly from curiositytostupidity.

Thank you for all of the submissions this week! We are working hard to respond to all of confessions, so if your submission isn’t in this edition, then be on the lookout for the next edition!

Fall Fashion

Never fear, ’s fall fashion is here!

I’m sure you’ve noticed the shift in temperature outside. As it gets colder, be sure to layer up and stay warm! Of course, fashion and comfort don’t always overlap, so Digest would like to offer you some ’s-inspired outfit combinations that will helpyoustaywarmandlookamazing.

' s fashion has been making a comeback with autumn-styled outfits due to its warm color palette and multitude of layers. A great starting point when layering an outfit is a simple long-sleeve undershirt, which you can then work your way up from. T-shirts, sweater vests, flannels or other types of coats/shawls are great additions on top of one. Another place to start is with a collared shirt, where you can fold the collar over a sweater and eitheraddacoatoranunbuttonedflannelontop.

If you choose to skip the undershirt route, you can start with a sweatshirt and add an unbuttoned flannelshirttokeepanoutfitsimplebuttrendy.
