DAY 4: 24 or 45 miles, easier terrain. Shuttle to Venice and the end of the Legacy Trail. After riding to the northern end, follow dedicated bike lanes and back roads out to Casey Key for an included lunch. Ride 6 miles down Casey Key — known for its lovely beach and low-light restrictions to improve the nesting success of the many sea turtles that lay eggs there. Then relax on the beach or opt for more miles. End the day with a sunset stroll on the beach and a walk to a delicious waterside dinner nearby.

Look for dolphins, herons, pelicans and more as you follow Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent beaches.

DAY 5: 39 miles, easier terrain.

Ride back along the Legacy Trail into Venice, then along a bike trail beside the Intracoastal Waterway.

Cross the quiet neighborhoods of South Venice and onto the barrier island of Manasota Key. Visit Stump Pass Beach State Park and go for a kayak paddle in the mangroves at Lemon Bay Aquatic Preserve.

Return to Venice Island — via bike or van — and explore the beaches there, including the opportunity to sift the sand for plentiful fossilized shark’s teeth. Our final celebratory dinner is at a local restaurant.

DAY 6: Departure Day. Today is our final day of riding. You can start early for some longer miles on bike lanes, visiting Myakka River State Park — or you can take a more leisurely ride back to the Legacy Trail and along the beaches of Casey Key. Visit Aquinnah Cliffs and boardwalk, one of the most spectacular spots on the island. Visit several interesting shops owned by the indigenous Wampanoag Indians.

Stop in the picturesque fishing village of Menemsha. We also plan to picnic here, perhaps after a walk along beautiful Menemsha Beach.

MISSISSIPPI – NATCHEZ TRACE The Natchez Trace Parkway is a restricted-access road with no commercial traffic built by the U.S. Park Service in the 1930s to honor this historic trail and road. The Trace is famous as an outstanding cycling route and for the iconic Southern scenery and architecture you see along the way.

ITINERARY DAY 1: 20 or 40 miles, easier terrain. Meet near Jackson, MS, and head out on the Natchez Trace. See a museum and Civil War sites, including General Grant’s

headquarters. Note the boundary between the Choctaw tribe and three different nations. Enjoy a picnic lunch. Walk to an abandoned town from the late 1800s. DAY 5: 30 to 60 miles, easier terrain. Ride on the pathway that parallels the Trace through Jackson near the scenic Ross Barnett Reservoir. See a cypress swamp nature area. Walk the boardwalk for a peek into the lives of the swamp’s residents — maybe even a dozing alligator. A picnic lunch is included.

Shuttle back to Jackson, for a final celebration dinner.

DAY 6: 0 or 20 miles, easier terrain. Visit the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum — two new interconnected museums that explain the sweep of Mississippi history and its role in the civil rights movement. After a hearty breakfast at Yoder’s, cycle into deep river valleys and into Ohiopyle State Park. This is the area where George Washington fought in the French and Indian War. Enjoy the plunging waterfalls and soaring ridges on the way into the town of Ohiopyle. We’ll enjoy dinner at a pub followed by a night at the rustic Yough Plaza Motel, just steps from the trail.

DAY 5: 46 miles, easier terrain.

Continue through Ohiopyle State Park and across beautiful rail trail

bridges. Enjoy lunch in the first large town since Maryland — Connellsville, PA. The trail and river run right through the historic downtown. From here, rural farm country edges closer to the river and we see occasional small towns until we cycle into West Newton, settled in 1788. Dinner is at the inn.

DAY 6: 32 miles, easier terrain.

Bike out of farm country by midmorning and into suburbs, and cycle through a recovering industrial area along the Youghiogheny River. It joins the Monongahela in McKeesport, and you ride along this majestic, ship-going section of the river. Stop in historic Homestead for lunch and then cross the famous Hot Metal Bridge into downtown Pittsburgh, arriving at the end of the GAP Trail. Following your ride, we transfer you back to the Pittsburgh Airport area by 4 p.m.

See more historic aqueducts and locks today. Stop at Fort Frederick State Park to learn its role in the French and Indian War (17541763) and the Civil War. Later, cross the footbridge to explore Harpers Ferry — site of John Brown’s famous raid, which was one of the key triggers of the Civil War. Celebrate at a final dinner together tonight in Harpers Ferry.

DAY 5: 20 or 25 miles, easier terrain. Explore historic Isle La Motte, the site of Fort Saint Anne, built by the French in 1666 — the first white settlement in Vermont.

Visit Saint Anne’s Shrine with a chapel, historic markers, and scenic walkways. Catch sight of the Adirondacks in the distance as you hug the island’s shore. Opt for a visit to the Fisk Farm and Quarry Preserve where there are outcroppings of the Chazy Fossil Reef, the world’s oldest coral reef.

Cycle on toward the beaches of Tisvilde before ending in Hillerod. Visit Frederiksborg Castle, known as the “Danish Versailles.”

Frederickssund and along the shores of the fjord to the historic former Viking stronghold of Roskilde. Visit their famous Viking Ship Museum, with preserved remains of five original 11th-century Viking vessels.

It’s straight as an arrow and takes you almost to the center of the World Heritage Site that is the City of Bath. DAY 7: 18 to 25 miles, easier terrain. Cycle through the Moselle valley across the German-French border and by the castle at Sierckles-Bain, a hilltop castle from the 11th century. Then cycle to Thionville, a historic fortified town with a classic city center and 13th century château built by the counts of Luxembourg. Around lunchtime, join the barge and cruise to Metz, a medieval city known for its sandstone buildings.

DAY 5: 18 miles, easier terrain.

Follow the beautiful Saar River valley to Saarburg, where there’s a 60-foot high waterfall and waterpowered mill. The castle here was built in the 10th century. After dinner, explore the town on foot.

The head for the Maol Reidh Hotel, where an open fire in the reception room and a welcoming pub will set the tone for the two wonderful days and nights. Dinner is at the inn.

DAY 4: 22 or 28 miles plus hike, both easier to intermediate terrain.

Cycle along Killary Harbor catching great views in the valleys of the Maamturk Mountains. Stop at the beach made famous by John Ford’s 1951 movie, “The Quiet Man.” Don’t miss a visit to Kylemore Abbey — a Benedictine monastery with a 6-acre Victorian garden. At the Abbey there is a cafe and an optional onehour hike up the mountain behind the manor house.

DAY 5: 25 or 35 miles or hike Croagh Patrick, easier to intermediate cycling; more advanced hike. Today’s choice is

either cycling or hiking. To ride, start near Leenaun to cycle along a breathtaking valley nestled at the foot of towering mountains to Louisburgh and then on into Westport. To hike Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s “Holy Mountain,” take the “pilgrim’s path” and allow 4 to 5 hours (8.6 miles roundtrip). The hike is not considered difficult though it features a 2,400-foot elevation gain.

DAY 6: 23, 35 or 42 miles, easier terrain. Take a short shuttle to cycle the “Great Western Greenway,” a pristine cycle and walking path.

Enjoy views around Achill Sound, and then link to the Wild Atlantic Way — around the sound, returning to Mullaranny. Spin on the bike path to Newport with options. Farewell dinner is at a pub.

DAY 7: Travel day. After breakfast, transfer to Westport or Galway stations for train connections.

DAY 7: 37 miles, easier terrain.

Visit the charming medieval village of Asolo. Make a short climb up to Monte Ricco, a fortress with spectacular views. Bike to Villa

di Maser, one of architect Andrea Palladio’s masterpieces. Tour the villa and have a light lunch. Follow a bike path to lovely Treviso.

DAY 8: Guided Tour of Venice.

After breakfast, take a 30-minute train ride to Venice for a walking tour. Stroll and/or take a gondola or vaporetto boat ride. Enjoy the canals and rich cultural heritage. Take an “insider’s tour” of unique places in Venice. Explore and shop on your own. Then take a short ferry to our hotel.

DAY 9: 20 miles, easier terrain.

Ride through the islands of the Venetian Lagoon. Take a short ferry ride to Pellestrina to visit quaint fishing villages. Some opt to explore more of Venice, others walk the sand dunes at Oasi Dune degli Alberoni before riding back to the hotel.

DAY 7: 29 to 34 miles, easier to intermediate terrain. Cycle the incredible Queenstown Trail to the legendary gold mining village of Arrowtown. Then follow a cycle path to Kawarau Bridge. Perhaps drop in on some local wineries. Afterward, shuttle about an hour over the Crown Range to Wanaka.

DAY 8: 16 miles, easier. Enjoy more of the Queenstown Trail. Spin along Lake Wanaka to Lake Hawea. Enjoy vistas of soaring mountains over the crystal waters. Lunch is at a pub in Lake Hawea. Then shuttle for about 3.5 hours through Mt. Aspiring National Park to the tiny, remote town of Fox Glacier. Check into a simple but modern inn.

DAY 9: 21 miles, easier to intermediate. Hike along Mirror Lake at sunrise, for unforgettable views.

Then shuttle 2 hours to Ross to ride on the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

DAY 10: 20 miles, intermediate to advanced. Shuttle 30 minutes and get on your bike for your last ride on another stretch of the West Coast Wilderness trail. DAY 4: 45 to 50 miles, easier to intermediate terrain. Pedal toward the coastal village of Sines — birthplace of Vasco da Gama. The 15th-century Castle of Sines area has seen pre-historic residents, pirates and medieval battles.

DAY 5: 23 miles, easier with intermediate options. Ride on coastal roads through the tiny village of Porto das Barcas, a nice spot for lunch. Then ride to Milfontes, where you can relax, swim, take a beachfront walk or have a drink by the sea.

Europe’s southwestern point — with a fortress and lighthouse. Then ride a few miles to Sagres.

DAY 8: 29 miles, easier to intermediate terrain. Take a 1-hour bus ride to Albufeira, and cycle along pleasant coastal roads to the town of Faro — with ancient walls, a gothic cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace. Faro’s pristine beaches line the coast.

DAY 6: 42 miles, advanced terrain. Ride along the Rota Vicentina, one of the best walking trails in Europe. In Aljezur, climb up to the castle and enjoy views of lowlands, creeks, trees and the famous sweet potato fields.

DAY 9: 26 miles, easier to intermediate terrain. Ride along the coast by villages like Santa Luzia, the “octopus capital” of the Algarve. Keep an eye out for the Cemetery of Anchors — a legacy of the decline of the local tuna fishing industry. Arrive in Tavira, one of the most beautiful towns in Algarve, with Moorish architectural influences.

DAY 7: 22 or 34 miles, easier with intermediate options. Take a short ride along the coast to Carrapateira, with rugged limestone cliffs and dunes. Take an optional ride to

Consider a lovely walk out to the lighthouse with views of the bay and Ardnamurchan Peninsula. End the day with a guided tour of the local distillery. Small tours/tour cancellations. It sometimes happens that there are too few tour participants by the final payment date for us to feasibly run a tour. In that event, you will get a 100% refund of your tour payments. Be sure to check with our office as to the status of your tour before making any non-refundable travel arrangements. Please also know that as a courtesy to our guests, we may run a tour with as few as four participants, and if you are unwilling to be part of a small group tour, you need to advise us before the final payment due date for your tour.

Deposts and final payments. Tour deposits are due at the time you make your reservation and are $300 per person for weekend tours and $500 per person for all other tours. With a few exceptions*, final payments for domestic tours are due 60 days prior to the start of your tour. All deposits are applied to the full tour price. *Final payment is due 90 days before tours in Europe and New Zealand; 120 days prior to the start of the Florida Keys, Chile and Moselle River Bike & Barge tours; and 150 days prior to the Vietnam Adventure tour.

Cancellations. If you cancel by the final payment due date for your tour, you will receive a full refund.

If you cancel between 60 and 119 days of your tour, you recieve a 50% credit for a future tour within 18 months. For Vietnam, there’s a full refund up to 150 days prior to your tour, and a 50% credit when you cancel between 149 and 60 days ahead. Trip cancellation insurance. Please purchase trip cancellation insurance since we are unable to make any exceptions to our cancellation policy — even for personal emergencies. (Check with your credit card company. Many now include trip cancellation insurance automatically.) Single travelers. A limited number of guaranteed private rooms are available on most tours at an additional cost. This cost is indicated on each tour page.

Children. Children are very welcome if they are at least 10 years old, are physically capable of participating in the tour, and are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.

Pet Allergies. Some of our inns have family pets. Let us know if you have any relevant allergies.

BIKE INFORMATION HELMETS: Helmets are required and are made available to you at no charge. If you have a helmet you like, we encourage you to bring your own.

BRINGING YOUR OWN BIKE: For many of our tours, your bicycle should be geared for hills. Please have your personal bike thoroughly checked by a professional bike mechanic before you arrive. And please note below what types of bikes are recommended for each tour.

HYBRID BIKES: are available on all of our tours (mountain bikes in New Zealand), and road bikes are available on most of our tours.

ROAD BIKES: are not recommended on some of our tours, including in Idaho, Puglia, England, Denmark, Ireland, Maine, Michigan,Scotland, Spain, Moselle River Bike & Barge, Mickelson Trail in South Dakota, GAP Trail and C&O Canal Trail. Hybrid bikes are provided for these tours.

E-BIKES: We have a limited number of e-bikes (pedal assist) available on a first-come, first-served basis at no extra charge (except in Chile and New Zealand) on most of our tours except in Vietnam and Maine. Contact the office to check availability. These bikes give you an added boost so you can consider hillier tours, and they allow couples with differing abilities to ride together.
