A SERIES OF DIGITAL WALKS AND VISITS see page 19
Welcome to Middlesbrough Local History Month 2025. This is your passport to explore the town and the borough and soak in our unique heritage. and stories to inspire. We are thankful to all the volunteers, as well as professionals, community groups and local authority facilities for being our facilitators.
In this the bicentenary year of the world’s first steam passenger railway, Stockton and Darlington Railway, we help celebrate and commemorate the new town founded five years later in 1830. An extension of the line to a new deep-water port, Port Darlington, was the making of Middlesbrough. Reinvented many times since as firstly Ironopolis and then as a steel and chemicals world hub, Middlesbrough’s history continues to fascinate especially as we steam towards our own bicentenary in 2030.
The aim of this month is to reach out and share our heritage across the borough and also across as many communities as we possibly can. We hope that there will be dates to conjure with
In this programme you will find open days and tours. In fact there are guided walks delivered in many different formats to make our history accessible and open to as many as possible. Thank you to Steve Thompson and the Rekindle project for all your work in bringing history to the people.
We must thank our prime funders Borderlands and the Arts Council without their incredible assistance this festival would not be possible. With this in mind can we nudge you towards our keynote
events Middlesbrough Uncovered. For one week at the end of May we want you to walk in others shoes, see through others eyes and be guided by community voices to experience Middlesbrough as never before. Middlesbrough Uncovered is an immersive experience that we hope will be in some way transformative also.
The history of Middlesbrough is all about overcoming hurdles of adversity and constant reinvention. There is so much change in progress right now. We hope this will be a month of positivity and enlightenment when our heritage will give strength and comfort to all. Most of all we hope you enjoy it.
