The Museo d’arte della Svizzera Italiana is the result of a merger between the Museo Cantonale d’Arte and Lugano’s Museo d’Arte. At LAC, the exhibitions focus on modern and contemporary art, whilst in Palazzo Reali – previously home to the Museo Cantonale d’Arte, currently closed due to renovation – artworks cover the period from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the early twentieth century.
Il Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano nasce dall’unione del Museo Cantonale d’Arte e del Museo d’Arte di Lugano. Al LAC propone linee espositive volte ad approfondire l’arte moderna e contemporanea e le sue collezioni; a Palazzo Reali – storica sede del Museo Cantonale, attualmente chiusa per ristrutturazione – presenta opere che spaziano dagli inizi del Quattrocento fino alla prima metà del Novecento.

Das Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana ist aus der Verschmelzung des kantonalen Kunstmuseums und des Kunstmuseums Lugano entstanden. Im LAC finden Ausstellungen zur Vertiefung der Kunst des 20. Jh., der zeitgenössischen Kunst und der Sammlungen statt. Im Palazzo Reali – ehemaliger Sitz des kantonalen Kunstmuseums, wegen Renovierung geschlossen – sind Werke aus dem Zeitraum frühes 15. Jh. bis Mitte 20. Jh. zu sehen.

Les activités du Musée d’art de la Suisse italienne se répartissent sur deux lieux: le LAC accueille des expositions consacrées à l’art moderne et contemporain, tandis que le Palazzo Reali – anciennement siège du Musée Cantonal, fermé pour restructuration – expose des oeuvres d’art du début XVème jusqu’à la première moitié du XXème siècle.

This wide-ranging retrospective dedicated to the Swiss photographer Burkhard displays nearly 200 large format photographs and many videos and books illustrating the work and the creative journey embarked on by an artist who viewed the human body as a sculpture and photography as paintings.

Like no other artist René Magritte was able to highlight the disquieting side of everyday objects. The 70 works in the exhibition at MASI are linked to the topics Magritte’s tackled in his “La ligne de vie” conference, which was one of the very few occasions when the artist expressed himself in public about his work.

The exhibition provides an important chapter in the history of twentieth-century Swiss art, examining the development of the Surrealist movement in Switzerland and the contribution of Swiss artists, revealing unexpected similarities with more recent art.

Vera Trachsel (1988), winner of the Ticino edition of the 2018 Manor Prize, presents a series of recent works. While experimenting with different materials, the artist prefers to use sheets of paper, painted, folded, torn or crushed to create an ephemeral world in which nothing is never definitive.
Vincitrice dell’edizione ticinese del Premio Manor 2018, Vera Trachsel (1988) presenta una serie di lavori recenti. L’artista predilige l’utilizzo di fogli di carta, sui quali interviene dipingendoli, piegandoli, strappandoli o accartocciandoli per dare vita a un universo effimero in cui nulla è mai definitivo.

The Spazio –1 hosts more than 100 contemporary artworks from the collection loaned to the City of Lugano by Giancarlo and Danna Olgiati. Like a Schaulager, –1 opens to the public periodically. To view the collection and temporary installations, an appointment has to be made.

Before Pop Art and Nouveau Réalisme differentiated themselves in the early 1960s, their representatives often worked together, united by the desire to bring art back to everyday life. The exhibition combines works from the Olgiati collection and works from a big private collection of European Pop Art.
Prima che Pop Art e Nouveau Réalisme si differenziassero nei primi anni ‘60, i loro esponenti lavoravano spesso insieme, uniti dal desiderio di riportare l’arte alla quotidianità vissuta. L’esposizione collega opere della Collezione Olgiati a lavori tratti da una grande collezione privata della Pop Art europea.

Bevor sich Pop Art und Nouveau Réalisme in den frühen 60er Jahren voneinander abgrenzten, arbeiteten ihre Vertreter oft zusammen, vereint durch ihren Wunsch, Kunst wieder in den gelebten Alltag zu bringen. Die Ausstellung verbindet die Werke der Sammlung Olgiati mit Werke aus eine Privatsammlung der europäischen Pop Art.
Avant que le Pop Art et le Nouveau Réalisme ne diffèrent au début des années ’60, leurs représentants travaillaient souvent ensemble, unis par le désir de ramener l’art au quotidien. L’exposition lie les oeuvres de la Collezione Olgiati aux œuvres d’une grande collection privée du Pop Art européen. 28

From “Beneath the Wheel” to Zen Hermann Hesse and Japan
Da “Sotto la ruota” allo Zen Hermann Hesse e il Giappone
Hermann Hesse got acquainted with Japan and the spiritual world of Zen Buddhism rather late in life. On the other hand, in Japan, Hesse’s works were translated very early, achieving a wide circulation and his books are still popular. Since his work mainly explores the problems of youth, Hesse’s influence also affects youth media such as manga.
Hermann Hesse si avvicina tardi al Giappone e al mondo spirituale del buddismo. In Giappone invece, le opere di Hesse vengono subito tradotte ottenendo un’ampia diffusione. Grazie a temi come i problemi degli adolescenti, l’influenza di Hesse è tale da riflettersi anche nei manga, amati dai giovani.

De « L’ornière » au Zen Hermann Hesse et le Japon
Hermann Hesse hat sich erst im Alter näher mit Japan und der geistigen Welt des Zen-Buddhismus beschäftigt. In Japan wiederum wurden die Werke Hesses schon früh publiziert und erreichen bis heute hohe Auflagen. Es sind vor allem Schilderungen der Nöte Jugendlicher, die auch in jüngeren Medien wie dem Manga zu finden ist.
Hermann Hesse s’intéresse tardivement au Japon et au monde spirituel du bouddhisme Zen. En revanche, les oeuvres de Hesse sont rapidement traduites au Japon et y sont largement diffusées. Avec les thèmes qu’il aborde, tels que les problèmes liés à l’adolescence, l’influence de Hesse se reflète jusque dans les mangas très appréciés des jeunes.

Having extended its interests from the ethnic to the oriental arts up to the anthropological interpretation of the work of art, the new MUSEC reopened to the public in the city centre with a fully renewed style. Prior to the official inauguration programmed for the 6th of April 2019, a rich program of exhibitions and events will take place within the year.
Con uno stile completamente rinnovato, ha riaperto al pubblico in centro città il nuovo MUSEC, che negli anni ha esteso i suoi interessi dalle arti etniche alle arti orientali e alla lettura antropologica dell’opera d’arte. The exhibition presents various forms of painted ceramics executed by the Asuriní Índios of Brazilian Amazonia, in particular by focusing, through photography and original drawings, on the graphic patterns which characterised the ceramics as well as the body paintings.

Die Ausstellung hebt die verschiedenen Formen der bemalten Keramik hervor, die von den Indios Asuriní des brasilianischen Amazonasgebietes hergestellt werden. Durch Fotografien und Originalzeichnungen, werden die grafische Motive präsentiert, die sowohl die Keramik als auch Körpergemälde kennzeichnen.

The Gypsotheque Gianluigi Giudici museum was conceived, promoted and created by the Renato and Gianluigi Giudici Foundation. It was established to conserve, promote and spread awareness of the works of the sculptor Gianluigi Giudici of Como, who spent much of his working life in Switzerland.

The exhibition, created on the basis of a cooperation agreement between the municipality of the City of Lugano and the Association of Memorial Museums of Latvia, is dedicated to the Swiss exile of the Latvian writers Rainis and Aspazija at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
Aperta nel 2018 a seguito di un accordo tra la Città di Lugano e l’Associazione dei Musei della Memoria della Lettonia, l’esposizione è dedicata all’esilio svizzero dei due intellettuali lettoni Rainis e Aspazija nei primi anni del Novecento.
Die Ausstellung wurde 2018 nach einem Abkommen zwischen der Stadt Lugano und dem Verband der Gedenkmuseen Lettlands eröffnet und widmet sich dem Schweizer Exil der beiden lettischen Intellektuellen Rainis und Aspazija im frühen 20. Jahrhundert.

A professional painter, a meticulous painter in his choice of favourite subjects: very detailed landscapes particularly in the strokes and clear-cut colours, then, gradually, delicate nuances appear, with a poorly-concealed propensity for nostalgic melancholy that, over time, does not wither the prolific garden of his memory.
Pittore professionista, puntiglioso nella scelta dei suoi temi preferiti: paesaggi dapprima molto dettagliati nel tratto e nel colore netto, poi, via via, appaiono sfumature delicate, con propensione malcelata ad una malinconica nostalgia che, col passare del tempo, non inaridisce il giardino prolifico della sua memoria.
Lieblingsmotiv des Berufsmalers sind Landschaften, die er sehr gewissenhaft angeht. Zuerst sind die Konturen scharf, die Farben klar. Dann gehen sie in sanfte Schattierungen über, die zu einer offenkundig wehmütigen Sehnsucht neigen. Trotzdem bringt der fruchtbare Garten seiner Erinnerungen über die Jahre hinweg immer wieder neue Blüten hervor.

The Malcantone has a subsoil rich in minerals, and various metals such as iron, lead, silver, and gold, extracted already in the 18th century. This tunnel, known as the “Leonilde”, is now open to the public to explore the spectacular and characteristic elements of the mining world. The Sessa mine is unique, offering the only possibility to experience the history of the extraction of gold minerals in Switzerland.
Il Malcantone ha un sottosuolo ricco di minerali, si suppone che già nei secoli passati si estraessero vari metalli, in particolare oro, argento, ferro, e piombo. La galleria, chiamata Leonilde, consente oggi di scoprire gli elementi più spettacolari e caratteristici del mondo minerario. La miniera rappresenta l’unica esperienza possibile per vivere la storia della coltivazione e dell’estrazione di minerali auriferi in Svizzera.

LuganoInScena offers a programme which runs the gamut from prose theatre to contemporary theatre, from national and international dance spectacles to musical programme and successful musical; it has played host to leading figures from the world of theatre and works closely with local artists. From 2015 LAC Arts Centre allows LuganoInScena to produce and coproduction prose and dance spectacles, that after tour to other Theatre.

Among the great European festivals, the FIT Festival Internazionale del Teatro e della scena contemporanea welcomes the big names of the international scene, with a particular attention to the contemporary one. Ten days of theater, performance, dance, devoted to innovation and hybridization of languages, artistic and design modalities outside of customs and conventions. Many side events and, among these, the appreciated “Conversations”, meetings after show with the artists, to bring a wider and more transversal audience.
Tra i grandi festival europei, il FIT Festival Internazionale del Teatro e della scena contemporanea accoglie i grandi nomi della scena internazionale, con un’attenzione particolare alla contemporaneità. Dieci giorni di teatro, performance, danza, votati all’innovazione e all’ibridazione dei linguaggi, a modalità artistiche e progettuali al di fuori delle consuetudini e delle convenzioni. Molti gli eventi collaterali e, tra questi, le apprezzate “Conversazioni”, incontri dopo spettacolo con gli artisti, per avvicinare un pubblico sempre più ampio e trasversale.

Unter dem großen europäischen Festivals, begrüßt der FIT Festival Internazionale del Teatro e della scena contemporanea die großen Namen der internationalen Szene, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die zeitgenössische. Zehn Tage Theater, Performance, Tanz, dem Innovation und der Hybridisierung von Sprachen, sowie künstlerischen und Design-Modalitäten außerhalb von Zoll und Konventionen gewidmet. Viele Nebenveranstaltungen und, darunter, die geschätzten „Gespräche“, Treffen nach der Show mit den Künstlern, um ein breiteres und transversaleres Publikum zu erreichen.

Dix jours de théâtre, de performance, de danse, consacrés à l’innovation et à l’hybridation des langages, à des modalités artistiques et de design en dehors des coutumes et des conventions. Nombreux les événements parallèles et, parmi ceux-ci, les appréciées « Conversations », des rencontres après spectacle avec les artistes, pour toucher un public plus large et plus transversal.

There’s a deafening silence and seconds later the familiar notes of the most renowned pieces of classical music fill the air. From Paganini to Bach as well as other great masters from the past and present, music festivals are an unmissable spectacle for aficionados of the genre. Lugano’s summer provides the scintillating backdrop to these much-loved events which are popular with devotees of classical music from all over the world.
Il silenzio in sala si fa quasi assordante e un attimo dopo le note dei più celebri brani di musica classica riempiono l’aria: da Paganini a Bach, passando per gli altri grandi maestri del presente e del passato, i festival musicali sono una rassegna imperdibile per gli appassionati del genere. L’estate luganese fa da sfondo a questi eventi amati e seguiti da aficionados di tutto il mondo.

Es herrscht eine fast schmerzliche Stille im Saal, doch dann erfüllen die ersten Klänge klassischer Musik die Luft: bekannte Stücke von Paganini bis Bach, darunter viele grosse Meister von gestern und heute. Musikliebhaber aus der ganzen Welt kommen jeden Sommer nach Lugano, um an den einmaligen Musikfestivals dabei zu sein.
Dans la salle le silence se fait, presque assourdissant, et quelques instants après, les notes des plus célèbres musiciens classiques envahissent l’espace : de Paganini à Bach, en passant par les plus grands maîtres du présent et du passé, les festivals de musique, pour tous les passionnés, sont des moments à ne pas manquer. L’été luganais sert de cadre à ces événements appréciés et suivis par les aficionados du monde entier.

A musical season dedicated primarily to classical music but open to other art forms as well. The programme features the world’s leading symphony orchestras performing repertoires intended for large orchestras and hence with very wide expressive ranges. LuganoMusica events are held throughout the year and organised into various cycles including recitals, chamber music concerts and a cycle dedicated to the new generation of performers and various forms of contemporary music.
Stagione musicale dedicata principalmente alla musica classica e aperta ad altre forme artistiche. Ospita le più importanti orchestre sinfoniche del mondo a esibirsi in repertori votati al più ampio organico orchestrale, e quindi alla più ampia varietà espressiva. Il programma esteso sull’arco di un anno e articolato in vari cicli, presenta inoltre récital, concerti di musica da camera, un ciclo dedicato alla nuova generazione d’interpreti e diverse musiche contemporanee.

Die Konzertsaison widmet sich vorwiegend der klassischen Musik, steht aber auch anderen Kunstformen offen. Die bedeutendsten Sinfonieorchester der Welt treten hier auf, deren Repertoire für grosse Orchesterbesetzungen geschrieben wurde und somit eine umfassende Ausdrucksvielfalt mit sich bringt. Das ganzjährige Programm ist in mehrere Zyklen aufgeteilt und bietet auch Recitals, Kammermusikkonzerte, eine Bühne für junge angehende Musiker sowie für zeitgenössische Musik.

La manifestation accueille les plus grands orchestres symphoniques du monde qui interprètent des répertoires voués aux plus grandes formations et donc aux variations d’interprétation. “Ah, che bel vivere, che bel piacere” (Ah, isn’t life good, how pleasant it is): lyric opera debuts in Lugano. Gioachino Rossini’s masterpiece the Barber of Seville will be performed at LAC under the direction of Maestro Diego Fasolis on a stage arranged by the director Carmelo Rifici, for a total of four performances.

The ICMA international discographic award for 2018 has crowned the artistic development of the OSI and its principal conductor Markus Poschner, who have been making their presence felt on the European music scene. The OSI has two main performing venues: one at the Sala Teatro LAC, where it is resident orchestra, the other at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI. Opera and dance co-productions, tours and summer festivals round off the area of its programming aimed at involving the wider public. The orchestra has a very strong commitment to young people.
Il premio discografico internazionale ICMA 2018 corona l’evoluzione artistica dell’OSI e del suo direttore principale Markus Poschner, che s’impongono sulla scena europea. Due le rassegne principali dell’Orchestra: la prima nella Sala Teatro LAC, di cui l’OSI è orchestra residente; la seconda all’Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI. Di rilievo anche le coproduzioni operistiche e di danza, e l’attività in tournée. Open air, cine-concerti e festival estivi completano la programmazione coinvolgendo un pubblico allargato. Straordinario l’impegno per i giovani.

Der internationale Schallplattenpreis ICMA 2018 krönt die musikalische Entwicklung des OSI und dessen Chefdirigenten Markus Poschner, die sich auf der europäischen Musikszene behaupten. Das Orchester bietet hauptsächlich zwei Konzertreihen an: die erste für den Sala Teatro des LAC, wo das OSI ansässiges Orchester ist; die zweite für das Auditorium Stelio Molo RSI. Die Koproduktionen im Opern- und im Tanzbereich, die Tourneen und Sommerfestivals runden das Programm ab und ermöglichen es, ein breiteres Publikum zu erreichen. Der Einsatz für die Jugend ist aussergewöhnlich.
Le prix discographique international ICMA 2018 couronne l’évolution artistique de l’OSI et de son chef principal Markus Poschner, qui se sont imposés sur la scène européenne. Deux sont principalement les programmes de concerts : le premier à la Sala Teatro du LAC, où l’OSI est orchestre résident, et le second à l’Auditoire Stelio Molo RSI. De coproductions dans les domaines de l’opéra et de la danse, des tournées et festivals estivaux complètement la programmation, permettant ainsi de toucher un public plus large. L’engagement pour les jeunes est exceptionnel.
