Japanese Stationaries
【Introduction】
Hi! Today I would like to introduce some stationaries that are commonly used in Japan
I want to tell you a little bit about unique stationaries, as well as the types of stationary that Japanese students use
【Pencil and Mechanical pencil】
You mainly take notes with a pencil or mechanical pencil
When I was in elementary school, I was not allowed to use a mechanical pencil, so in the lower grades I only used pencils
Pencils quickly become roundedand hard to write with, so I used a pencil case equipped with a pencil sharpener.
When I got older, there were more and more students who started using mechanical pencils behind the teacher's back, and I was one of them.
Mechanical pencils were comfortable and didn't need sharpening.
However, some people prefer the ways pencils write, so there is a mechanical pencil that is functional as an ordinary mechanical pencil, but that you can use to write as if you were writing with a pencil (eg Otona no Enpitsu, Kitaboshi enpitsu cooperation)
【Notebooks】
I will introduce notebooks that are often seen in Japan by age group.
In the lower grades of elementary school, students start to learn how to write kanji characters, so specific kinds of notebooks are used for that purpose
These notebooks have big boxes, each of which are divided into four segments with thin dotted lines so that children can write well-balanced, beautiful kanji characters
There are also spaces next to the boxes, where children are supposed to write the reading of the kanji character.
I practiced a lot with these kinds of notebooks when I was a child
I used both noteb
There are also no
As you get older, many students start to use notebooks with narrower lines, as you will be able to write smaller characters.
Loose Leaf is also commonly used when you enter Junior High School
Students usually use different notebooks for each subject. You can choose loose leaf for subjects where you do not take mane notes, which is better for the environment.
When you enter University, you will use your laptop rather than paper notebooks
【Pencil Board】
You will use this to write easily when taking notes
They come in a variety of colours and sometimes have characters on them
【Highlighter Pen】
It is fun that you can find all kinds of colours
You can create your own textbook or notebook by highlighting important things with your favourite colour
Green, red, and sometimes blue highlighters are really useful when you want to memorize something.
When you highlightwith a green one and put a red pencil board on it, you can hide that part This is an effective way to memorize something
If you want to use a red highlighter, you can use a green pencil board instead.
【Correction Tape】
You can use correction tape if you want to rewrite what you wrote with a ball point pen. .
Correction tape is more convenient and neater than correction glue.
With tape, you can stick papers together without making a mess
It is very convenient when you want to stick documents that the teacher gives you into your notebook, because you can stick it easily, quickly and neatly.
【Erasable ballpoint pen and Sharpened mechanical pencil】
There are also erasable ballpoint pens
Even when you write something wrong, you can erase it easily by rubbing it out, so it is very conveninet.
There are also mechanical pencils htat are created for lead to be sharpened automatically while you are writing
【Pencil Case】
You can find so many types of pencil cases.
They vary from simple ones to ones with characters, so it is fun to choose from them.
You can even have one as big as a plush toy
There are rather functional ones, which are also fun
You can choose one depending on the amount of stationary you use, and the shapes and sizes of them are unique.
It can be said that you can express your personality depending on the pencil case you choose
【End】
I may be biased, but these are some of the stationaries that I often saw in schools in Japan.
I feel like many Japanese people have their own favourite kinds of stationary that suit them
I also had favourite pens and notebooks. They increased my motivation when studying.
If you are interested in them, please look for more fun stationaries from Japan!
【Questions】
Q1 Which pencil board should you use when you want to hide something with a red marker?
A A Red pencil board B A Green pencil board.
Q2 How would you use the stationary in this picture? Despite the difference in size, they are used for the same purpose.
Q2 Q1
【Me and the UK】
I am studying International Development at UEA One of the reasons I came to the UK is because I heard that the UK is famous for International Relation and International Development studies
I have also liked the Harry Potter series since I was a child, and I have been eager to visit Harry Potter World
Truthfully, I find the study difficult, but I found things I saw in movies and lived a "British" life. It's so fun!

Ukiyo-e
AYAKA KAWAGOSHI
Introduction
Ukiyo-e is a famous art style in Japan. It has influenced a lot of paintings and composers in the world- for example, Van Gogh, Monet, and Debussy. Recently, “Fugaku Sanjyurokkei (The Great Wave)” was used in a commercial for the Tokyo Olympics by the French national broadcast “France Télévisions.” Thus, Ukiyo-E might come to mind when you think of Japan.
What is Ukiyo-e
It is a form of art that emerged in the Edo period. Common people played a key role in developing the culture in the period.
Ukiyo-e is not a style of painting, but a style of printing. After the mold of the entire print was made, several other kinds of molds were made to add colors to the artwork. Ukiyo-e was used as an advertisement for modern fashion and posters of celebrities and became popular with the masses.
UKIYO-E AND WESTERN ART
During national isolation (Japan’s period of national isolation, when foreigners were not allowed to enter the country), Ukiyo-e by Katsushika Hokusai was used as packing materials to Europe, and it spread in the continent. After the Paris World Expo in 1867, Ukiyo-e spread more widely and Japanism occurred. Japanism is the Japanese boom in western art from the later19th century to the early 20th century. Many western impressionists were influenced by it: for example, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, and Gauguin.
This painting is influenced by Ukiyo-e. Julien Tanguy, who is the model in the painting, is an art dealer, and he ran stores selling art materials in Paris. He helped young painters with food and money, including Van Gogh. When Van Gogh went to Paris, the Paris exposition was held, and he got into the boom. He was particularly influenced by Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. When you look closer at the background of Père Tanguy, four seasons are drawn. After he drew it, Japanese art and impressionism fused in his mind. This influence can be seen in the painting.
CLAUDE ・
MONET La Japonaise
The female model of this painting is Camille Doncieux, a wife of Monet. He collected Ukiyo-e before it became famous. He also had some clothes from Japanese plays, which he would get his wife to wear and pose in. At this time in Europe, painting depicting Japanese dancing was popular and Monet was influenced by these. He didn’t draw authentic Japanese culture but depicted references to Japanese performances. For example, his wife does not wear black but a gold wig. This emphasizes the acclaim of Japanese art and the identity of the western self.

Me and the UK
I love tea, art, and traveling. The UK is the home of tea and there are many art museums. Also, it is easy to take a trip to other countries, too. The biggest reason is that I love Harry Potter and I’ve also wanted to experience the world. After coming to the UK, I’ve learned the culture and language every day, and everything looks new to me. It’s been a precious experience for me.

Japanese traditional instrument: Koto Mizuho
What is Koto?
"Koto" is a Japanese musical instrument, introduced from the Nara period of ancient China (also known as Tang). The body of this instrument is made from a tree native to China called paulownia wood; this instrument also has thirteen strings! If you move some pieces of this instrument called "Ji", you can tune a full musical scale To play Koto, you put tools, called "tsume", on your thumb, the middle finger and the forefinger of your right hand There are also other version of Koto which have seventeen strings instead of thirteen, such as the "Juu-shichigen " .
Major styles
The largest Koto schools nowadays are the "Ikuta style" and he "Yamada style" and there are three big difference between there two.
1 Shape of Tsume
Ikuta: Has the kakuzume, which is square-shaped
Yamada: Has the maruzume, shaped like a pointy mountain
←Ji
Tsume→
Okugawa
2. Sitting position
The way the player is seated is different in Ikuta and Yamada This is because of the way the tsume is shaped: it is easier for an Ikuta player to raise up the Koto at a 45 degree angle Yamada style players stay directly at the front of the instrument
3 Musical genre
The genre koto player plays is also different
Ikuta players will play classical or modern music. (Modern music means the koto music which was produced after the World WarⅡ and for example, it is mixed with western music or it is arranged referencing to J-pop.)
Yamada players can also play classical music, but they also sing ‒ these pieces are called utamono, and are characterized by their narrative elements and bright tones.
The History of Koto -Changing with the times-
Koto goes back to a fairly old time It is said that “Koto”, which is used in today’s Japan, is the combination of the "Koto" used since the 3rd century in Japan and with another "Koto" , which was brought from Mainland China around the 8th century. Around the 3rd century, "Koto" was considered to be a sacred tool and a symbol of someone who held power In the Heian period, Koto became not just a symbol of power but an instrument for nobles And then, in the Kamakura period, warriors - called Bushi- and Buddhist priestscalled Soryo- came into power, and they would play Koto at temples In the Edo period, Ikuta style and Yamada style have gained popularity. Moreover, since the merchant class culture flourished, Koto came to be played by the general public After that came, the Meiji Restoration (it is said that 1853-1868) and with it, Western culture started to exert its influence in Japan Therefore, a new way of playing and a new way of composing were produced After the World War Ⅱ, Koto was introduced to foreign countries and Koto became so popular in ordinary households that parents would make their children get lessons. As a result, certain classes that could not play before now got access to Koto Today, some musicians use Koto for pop music, jazz, or rock music In addition, people play not only traditional music but also modern popular music When I was a junior high school student or high school student, I often played Ghibli music (Ghibli is famous anime studio in Japan Many Japanese people have watched Studio Ghibli's anime once) with Koto at some events because I wanted audiences to have an interest in Koto
In this way, Koto has continued to be loved as a Japanese traditional musical instrument even as it changes its style to fit the times
Quiz
There are Yamada style and Ikuta style in Koto and some differences are found between those two styles Do you know what differences each style has in "Tsume"?
Answer
Ikuta style: kakuzume, which is square-shaped
Yamada style: maruzume, shaped like a pointy mountain
Me and England
In Japan, I mainly study about English and American literature, so this is why I thought I would study abroad in the UK or the US The decision was hard, and I started reading books written by Kazuo Ishiguro after I entered Osaka University and I really like his books Kazuo was born in Japan, but he moved to the UK when he was young Therefore, he is a famous British author and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature Since I knew that he got the degree of Master of Arts at University of East Anglia, I decided to go to University of East Anglia for my year abroad

INAKA
In Japan, there are many urban cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. While those vast cities attract many tourists, Inaka (the countryside) is also one of the most beautiful parts of Japan. I grew up in Tokyo, and I moved to the Akita prefecture in the north-east part of Japan because my university is there. After that, I grew to love local places more and more! So, I would like to introduce the Japanese countryside to you.
Inaka of Japan
SHIZEN
When you hear “countryside,” what does that make you think of? For me, I come up with nature. You can see rice fields as far as the eye can see, forests with animals, and the sea. People living in such a local place can clearly feel the four seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms spread out, and many cicadas chirp in the green nature of summer. Autumn follows summer, which is the season in which rice fields turn to gold, and we enjoy “the taste of fall.” In winter, snow covers everything, and the scene turns to silver in the northern part of Japan. Such rich nature is described as “Satoyama.” People have handed down the idea of Satoyama as the reason behind the plants and animals and as the beautiful scenes.
Both photos are taken in Akita:)
One of the Satoyama cultures is Sansai, which means mountain vegetables. As around 70% of Japan is covered with forests, it is possible to find Sansai everywhere in Inaka. It is said Sansai was eaten more than 10000 years ago. This means Sansai is very familiar to Japanese people. There are over 1000 kinds of Sansai, but people usually eat around ten of them. People can pick Sansai in all seasons, and the vegetables they can find depend on the season. For example, in spring, we can see Tarano-me, Fukino-to, and Takenoko (Bamboo shoots). Here is a good video I recommend to show you the joys of Spring Sansai.
KYODO RYORI
If you want to enjoy the Inaka of Japan, eating local dishes is one of the best ways to experience it. Local dishes using local food in a traditional way are called Kyodoryori. In Japan, the ingredients that people can get depend on the region’s climate. Also, different regions have different kinds of Kyodo-ryori. In the north-east part of Japan, the local Kyodo-ryori is hot pots and soups as it’s cold. For instance, Akita’s Kyodo-ryori is Kiritampo using rice because Akita is one of the most well-known regions for producing rice in Japan. Interestingly, the way of making Kiritampo is different even in Akita. These days, farmers run restaurants where we can eat vegetables that they grow. On top of this, there is Minsyuku (Japanese inn) where we can enjoy Kyodo-ryori made by a grandmother. If you’re interested, you should give it a try!
TSUNAGARI
Connections with local people are also one of the reasons to live in the countryside. Relationships within a community spontaneously come up in Inaka. When I lived in Akita, a 90-year-old grandmother gave me vegetables, fruits she grew, and her dishes. People often cooperate, such as farming jobs that they can’t do by themselves. Sometimes, festivals and funerals are held within a community. Some people may feel the connection is too involved. Still, I like talking with neighbors during events in the village since I had few contacts in Tokyo. The family in the photo is a pear farmers, and are like another family in Akita for me. Here is a video about making Ohagi (a Japanese sweet) with local grandmothers.
QUIZ
What do you call nature that has been preserved by human life for a long time and which enables plants, animals, and humans to coexist?
P.S.
Since I wanted to go to an Englishspeaking country and travel a lot, I chose the UK as a study abroad program. Although I heard Norwich was in the countryside and imagined it was surrounded by fields and forests, it’s like a calm town for me and I like Norwich. Thank you for reading so far. Lastly, if you have time, here is a video I would like you to watch about Akita. I really love it, and hope you enjoy it!

What is a Goshuin?
~ Beginning ~
Do you know what a Goshuin
is?
It is like a stamp you can get when you go to temples and shrines. This stamp is proof that you went to the temple or shrine. Also, you can put together a stamp book, called Goshuincho, by gathering various Goshuin. Nowadays, Goshuin is becoming popular among people of all ages in Japan.
~ Origin ~
During the Muromachi period around the 16th century, a Goshuin was what you could get as proof that you offered a copied Buddhist sutra. However, many people visited temples and shrines for sightseeing in the Edo period, and gradually it became possible to get a Goshuin just by going there.
Offer the copied sutra
Write a Buddhist sutra 1.
2.
3 Recieve a Goshuin
I live in Osaka, but my house is near Kyoto, so I have visited Kyoto to go to temples and shrines with my family since I was young. Also, when I was a high school student, I went to Oumi Jingu Shrine, the setting of the Japanese anime, “Chihayafuru,” because I liked this anime. At that time, my mother recommended that I start gathering Goshuin. I did not know what a Goshuin was until then, so I was moved by its beautiful design when I got one there for the first time. After that, I always take my own Goshuincho when I visit temples and shrines.
~ The rules for receiving a Goshuin ~
Temples and shrines are sacred places, so there is a set routine before receiving a Goshuin. First, when you arrive at temples and shrines, you go through the gate. Next, you wash our mouths and hands with water and give money to God or Buddha. After that, you can receive a Goshuin at the entrance.
[A set of routine]
1 Wash with water
2 Put money in the box
Japanese Yen
Oumi Jingu Shrine (Shiga)
3 Put our palms together
4 Receive a Goshuin
~ The reason I started gathering Goshuin ~
~ Introduction of Goshuins ~
The Shinto priest, the Jyu-syoku or Gu-ji, responsible for the temples and shrines, writes Goshuins in front of us. Also, sometimes the shrine maiden, the Miko, who serves the temples and shrines, may have to write them. First, they stamp a stamp of bright red colour and then write the name of the visited temple or shrine and date with an ink brush in the Goshuincho. The design of stamps and the way of writing are different depending on the place, so this is one of the reasons Goshuin is popular.
The two pictures below show Goshuin that I received that have left an impression on me. For example, a rugby ball is drawn in the left picture because the shrine is famous for rugby. Next, the right one is a Goshuin I got in Hokkaido. The Shinto priest of this shrine was very kind, and he gave me not only Goshuin but also a sticker with the shrine’s name written on it. In this way, you can get Goshuins of the original design of visited places.

~ About Gohuincho ~
A Goshuin is written in a booklet which is called “Goshuincho”. There are many kinds so that you can buy a Goshuincho of your favorite design at the temple or shrine. I chose a Goshuincho of cherry blossoms' design because I like them. Nowadays, there are many Goshuin and Goshuincho collaborations with Japanese anime. In this way, choosing your favorite Goshuincho is part of the fun.
~ Conclusion ~
There are many traditional temples and shrines in Japan. You can get a feel for Japanese culture by visiting there, but please try to get Goshuin as a memory I hope you can find your favorite Goshuin!
The Shinto priest in this temple chooses words like a poem for each person and writes them on a Goshuincho in front of us. You can also listen to explanations about the words. I got the words, “Don’t forget to appreciate my parents.”, and I was very impressed with the story by the Shinto priest.

I had longed to visit the UK because I have enjoyed watching British movies such as Harry Potter and reading British books such as Roald Dahl since I was young. Also, I had only studied American English and wanted to learn British English, so I decided to study abroad in the UK. Indeed, I felt the atmosphere of the UK and the British people’s personalities are very wonderful, so I am glad to be able to experience studying abroad in the UK.
Q1. Other than the red stamp and the name of shrine or temple, What else is written in a Goshuincho?
Q2. There are some rules to follow before receiving a Goshuin. After going through a gate and washing your mouth and hands with water, what do you need to do?

History of Japanese Fashion Trends
Yuto Kunimitsu
【Introduction】
I am going to introduce the history of fashion in Japan. Let's see what kind of clothes people wore in the past, and how fashion trends in Japan have changed in the last few decades, especially amongst young people!
【Kimono Culture】
“Kimono" is a traditional Japanese cloth that has been worn for over 1000 years. Its style had changed over time.
In the Heian Period (794-1185), it was worn mainly by noblewomen when participating in traditional events. At that time, the kimono had to be worn over many layers of clothing and was called a “junihitoe" (twelve-layered kimono) because it looked like twelve pieces of clothing. It is also said to have weighed 20 kg.
Various colours were used for kimonos since this period, and like today, there were trends of colours.
From the Kamakura period (1185-1333) onwards, the style changed to one that was lighter and easier to wear, and the common people began to wear kimonos, not only the nobility.
In the Edo period (1603-1868), both men and women wore kimonos in their daily lives. The shape and material of the kimono varied depending on the wearer ' s status and occupation. It is said that the noblewomen created the fashion trends at the time.
(a court noble)
(a samurai family)
【1980s】

American fashion was popular in Japan until the 70s, but from the 80s onwards a unique Japanese fashion culture emerged. Leading this culture was the DC brand, which stands for Designer's & Character's, a generic term for high-end Japanese fashion brands.
Ex) Yohji Yamamoto, TAKEO KIKUCHI
Young people created a trend of an all-black outfit known as “Crow Tribe”. 'Japanese preppy ' was another typical style popular at the time. It is characterised for its casual use of a school-uniform style. For example, blazers and cardigans with emblems are worn over or around the waist.

【1990s】
In the 1990s, street fashion culture developed. Street fashion is a spontaneous fashion created by young people, unrestricted by the trendy styles produced by the fashion industry. In other words, people in Japan began to enjoy fashion more freely than ever before. This influence was particularly seen in Shibuya and Harajuku. The most impressive style of all was "Gal" fashion. Many young women wore miniskirts and loose socks and had brown hair. There are various kinds of Gal fashion, like Sister Gal, Child Gal, and Ganguro Gal. As a result, there were many young people wearing unique fashion that had never been seen before in this decade, and city centre became more vibrant.
(Ganguro)
【2000-present】
In the 21st century, many people have developed a fondness for classy fashion. Unisex fashion has also spread. In recent years, society has become more inclusive of people wearing what they want to and what suits them, regardless of gender. For example, women now wear men ' s T-shirts and men wear items for women. Wearing oversized clothes is also in vogue. In this way, the range of fashion in Japan has expanded in recent years.

【Me and UK】
There are a few reasons why I wanted to study in the UK. First, I wanted to be exposed to real English. In my high school English class, I used BBC materials, and from then on, I had a longing for the British Accent.
Secondly, I wanted to be surrounded by fascinating culture and art. I wanted to broaden my horizons by experiencing music, theatre, fashion, architecture and sports in the UK.
Since coming here, I have liked the UK even more. This experience of studying in the UK will be something I will never forget.

AYAKA KAWAGOSHI
