What a momentous few days we’re about to witness as June arrives and all eyes will be fixed on Her Majesty the Queen.

Hopefully, the weather will be kind, for everyone to enjoy the spectacular range of activities and events which will be offered to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

The Yaxley Festival in May turned out to be a really enjoyable weekend, as we supported the Young Technicians Academy which offers valuable training in the live events industry, and which has made such good progress since opening last year.

Finally, love and Happy Father’s Day greetings go to my dad, Bill; father-in-law, Rich; and husband, Chris.

Claire x This month will be dominated by celebrations surrounding Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Countless events have been planned for the occasion, both locally and nationally, and of course an extra Bank Holiday has been added to the calendar to mark this landmark.

Whatever your political persuasion and feelings about the monarchy in general, there’s no doubt HM the Queen deserves maximum respect for devoting her life to the service of the country.

The Queen has been the figurehead of the country for the past seventy years with most of the population being born during her long and illustrious reign, so let’s mark the historic occasion in the right way and unite to celebrate the second Elizabethan age…

une heralds the beginning of summer. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer, sunnier days, so too will the weeds! Here are a few tips for keeping them at bay:

• Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove the remains so that they won’t re-grow.

• Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure, or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

• Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower, you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using food-grade “diatomaceous earth”, good for slugs and other pests as it dehydrates them. For more information, have a look at “How to Use Diatomaceous Earth for Organic Pest Control in the Garden” (soilseedandgarden.com) As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity, as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. It is also your last opportunity for sowing runner beans and main crop carrots. Sweetcorn can be planted out and as it is self-pollinating it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square

or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction.

Other jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.

• Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions.

• Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

• Protect strawberries by mulching around them with straw to keep mud splashes off, and keep birds off your ripening strawberry crop by covering your plants with netting.

• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a useful source of nitrogen.

• Feed tomatoes with a high potash feed.

• Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows, and squashes.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops and carrots.

• Sow Florence fennel, traditionally after the ‘longest day’, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt – sowing in succession is a good idea.

• Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn, and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted.

• Protect carrots with insect proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons.

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear Unusual, fascinating and sometimes amusing, by the author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess’, Chris Donald

Why do we have a dual carriageway in Wisbech ​?

Be warned…... this is a sad story.

If you look at a map of Wisbech, there are four main roads into the town; from the south, the west, the north and the east, but only one is a dual carriageway. Why did they not make the other routes dual carriageway and why does the dual carriageway not go all the way to the bypass? The answer is simple……the Wisbech canal. One side of the dual carriageway there used to be a canal, but let’s start at the beginning of this story.

In 1792, a staggering one and a half million pounds (£20,000) was spent digging out a canal from Wisbech to Outwell as it was thought this would improve trade for Wisbech. And this was for a canal just over five miles long.

Canal mania at that time was already in full swing. It started in 1761 with the Bridgewater canal and at its peak expanded to more than four thousand miles of canals. It was the new, improved way of transporting goods. Previously, the only way to transport goods was by horse and cart. Now, with a canal boat, one horse could pull a boat laden goods weighing eight to ten tons. Far more goods than you could get in a cart.

Fortunes were made and lost by speculators who bought and sold shares in canal building. The money for the Wisbech canal was raised by the sale of shares, first at £8000 (£105) and then later at £9000 (£120).

Like all sad stories, this canal was doomed even before it was started. Canals rely on water from higher ground to keep their water level up. This canal didn’t have any higher ground so it had to rely on high tides to keep the level up and with the high tides brought silt which then had to be dredged out.

Flood locks were put at each end of the canal but the one at the Wisbech end was too short for long canal boats to fit in. This meant that these boats had

to wait for the level of the River Nene and the level of the canal to be the same before they could enter or depart. They could then open both lock gates and go through. And then sometimes the level of water in the canal got too low and they had to wait for a spring high tide to bring the water in the canal up to its proper level.

But it was not all doom and gloom. In the early 1800s they transported two thousand tons of coal and by 1838 it was nearly thirty thousand tons. Things didn’t seem too bad. And this would have kept going except for one thing… the advent of the railway.

The first trains ran in Britain in 1830 and by 1847 Wisbech had its own railway station and that finally meant the death for the Wisbech canal. Gradually trade got less and less, the trains were too much competition. They could carry more and were far faster and in 1914 the canal took just over £3000 (£50) in a whole year in tolls and so, eight years later it ceased altogether and the Minister of Transport officially closed it.

The canal now, gradually became a health hazard, a tipping ground and an eyesore and so in 1968 the council used it as a landfill site, filling it up with household waste and general rubbish. When it was all filled in, they put Churchill Road on top. So, this is how the dual carriageway came into being, all because of somebody thinking a canal from Upwell to Wisbech would be a good idea.

Next time you drive on Churchill Road just remember… .you’re driving over a household waste tip.

FIVE HABITS TO DEVELOP TO BECOME FINANCIALLY SECURE

A

s a financial advisor what I strive for is financial security for my clients’ future. So here are five habits to start developing on the road to financial security:

1) Make savings a habit: Treat savings as a bill you must pay. Set up an automated transfer like a standing order every month on pay day. Get into the right mindset and see this as a necessity rather than it’s something nice to do or you will do it sometime in the future. Start small, say £30 a month, and once this becomes a habit you can always increase. Start small so it doesn’t break the budget until it becomes a habit and way of life.

2) Look at triggers for impulse spending: Analyse this. Look at your past impulse spending. Next time you see something you would like to buy think whether you need this item or not. Try to resist the urge to make a purchase without thinking about it. Give yourself twenty-four to forty-eight hours to think about it.

3) Save and invest for you and your family’s future: Have emergency money saved up for a rainy day – adequate insurance so your dependants are protected if the worst was to happen.

Make sure you have an up-to-date will in place.

4) Manage your debts: If you have unsecured debt like credit cards and personal loans, look at the interest rate you are being charged. Make a list of the highest interest rates and draw up a plan to make overpayment.

Keep it small, say £10 to £20 a month, make it a habit and do it consistently and increase the amount as the habit becomes easier.

5) Keep on top of your bills: A good habit here is to pay your bills as soon as they come in.

This way you don’t forget and incur fines or penalties. Automate as much as possible to help you budget more efficiently.

couple of years ago, we wrote an article about phishing scams. In case you didn’t read it, or have forgotten, phishing is a way in which fraudsters attempt to trick you into providing your user names and passwords to a malicious website.

Most of these scams come in the form of emails, claiming to be from organisations such as internet service providers, banks, PayPal, eBay, Google or Apple.

The emails will look genuine with all the right icons, logos, and fonts that you’d expect to see and will ask you to login, via the link in the email, to the ‘secure’ page of the website with your email address and password.

This link of course will take you to a false destination, usually a page that requests you to enter sensitive information like credit card numbers, passwords etc.

The scammers use this page to harvest your inputted data and

then use that data to fraudulently pretend to be you.

Google has published a quiz that tests users’ abilities to distinguish genuine emails from phishing ones and helps users to learn to spot the differences. The quiz is quick, fun and was designed to take into account the latest and most sophisticated phishing techniques (it is based on security trainings held with more than ten thousand journalists, activists, and politicians from around the world).

In total, there are eight examples that Google tests you on, some representing legitimate emails and others phishing scams. Using the information in each example email, you choose whether it’s real or fake. After you choose, the quiz will inform you of the correct answer and then tell you why the message is a phishing scam or not.

Don’t be discouraged if you get a low score: in fact, that’s what Google wants. The whole point of the quiz is to show people how incredibly good scammers are at creating legitimate-looking emails and present you with tools on how to spot them.

Sadly, crooks will never let up on designing new ways in which to scam innocent users. So, it is up to us to remain aware and proactive.

If you do receive an email from a big-name company that looks suspicious, forward it onto their fraud team who will inspect it and try to stop the crooks from using that email server. But most importantly, NEVER click on any links to web pages.

By Bridget Hunter INTERESTING FACT ‘What’s in a name?’ Often, when researching, we find names have changed for various reasons. Often, when a child has the same name as the parents, they will use their middle name instead to avoid confusion, or a pet name is used which is often confusing as it may not link to their actual given name in any way.

More difficult for the researcher is when the surname changes. In 2015, more than 85,000 people changed their name by Deed Poll, which is more than twice as many as the previous decade, and the numbers look set to rise making family research very hard to follow.

We know that many actors and music artists use stage names, which is understandable. Some reasons given to me were that one part of their family had a bad reputation and they wanted to distance themselves and their family from them.

Others found their surname became a joke so changed it. One reason which is frequently found by a researcher is that couples marrying combined their surnames, mainly due to there being no male heir to carry on the name. Not so frequent is the husband changing his name to the wife’s surname when they marry instead of the other way round.

In my research, I found a family of four children who had up to four different surnames. They were born with their father’s name, he deserted them and their mother, she then changed her surname to a hyphenated made-up name, then applied to the courts for her children to have the same name as her. As the children grew up, they hated the surname and by this time mother had remarried so was using a different name herself and no longer living with her three eldest children.

One child reverted to her birth name as it was on her birth certificate so was easy to do. One child asked if she could use her grandparents’ surname and changed by Deed poll. Later she married and is now known by the husband’s surname, so has used four different surnames. When another child married, he combined one part of his surname with

his wife’s as there was no male heir in her family.

I would hate in the future to be a researcher doing that family! The legal process in England and Wales is if you are aged over eighteen, you can change your name by Deed poll; it is not expensive. A Family Law specialist can draft and formally execute a change of name deed. You MUST notify all organisations i.e., bank, post office and DVLA etc by showing them the letter as proof of your new name. There can be many benefits. BUT for a family researcher It will be a nightmare!

COMPUTER RESEARCH SESSIONS Our May session found our experienced researchers very busy, with a variety of research lines to follow for visitors to our session. One was to find and research the birth family of an adopted person. Another was to follow the movements of ancestors who had been landlords of local pubs. Our research sessions are held twice a month. One in Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of each month from 10am-12noon. The second in Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay on the second Monday of the month from 11am-2.30pm in the restaurant. All welcome to attend no matter where your family originated.

MONTHLY MEETINGS. We meet on the FOURTH Thursday of the month (except August & December) in Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm.

Visitors welcome. We offer sources of research plus a guest speaker on a varied and wide selection of interesting subjects. Our May meeting was an interesting talk about researching adoptions. On June 23rd we will welcome back Mike PETTY, a very well-known and interesting speaker. Our July 28th meeting will be a visit to the graveyard of the Octagon Church.

OUR SPEAKERS: have enjoyed visiting local groups and clubs to share their stories. Our talks include ‘The Fun of Family History’; ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’; ’The Ups and Downs of Being a Magistrate’ and ‘The Sad Tale of the Blacksmith’s Family’.

How To Home In ON ALLOWANCES Are you making the most of your allowances on your income from your residential property?

If you receive income from letting a room in your property or renting out another property permanently or as a holiday let, there are various reliefs and allowances that can be applied to your income to reduce your tax bill.

Chris Goad, partner at our Wisbech office, examines the reliefs and allowances that you may need to consider when completing your tax return.

The Rent a Room Scheme The Rent a Room Scheme lets you earn up to a threshold of £7500 per year tax-free from letting out furnished accommodation in your home. This is halved if you share the income with your partner or someone else.

You can let out as much of your home as you want.

The tax exemption is automatic if you earn less than £7500. If you earn more than this you must complete a tax return and you can then opt into the scheme at any time if you are a resident landlord or run a bed and breakfast or guest house and claim your tax-free allowance on your tax return.

You can choose not to opt into the scheme and instead record your income and expenses on the property pages of your tax return.

You cannot use the scheme for homes converted into separate flats.

Property Income Allowance If you are a landlord earning rental income from your property you can get up to £1000 rental income taxfree each year from Property Income Allowance.

If you earn less than £1000 from rental income, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you claim the Property Income Allowance, you cannot claim any other rental expenses.

If you own a property jointly with others (spouses, civil partners, etc.), you can each claim this £1000 allowance – even though you divide the rental income between yourselves.

If you’re renting out a buy-to-let or a second property, usually your expenses are higher than £1000 a year, so only use this allowance if you can’t find your receipts or if in one year you somehow have just a few expenses.

Residential Finance Costs Relief for finance costs on residential properties is restricted to the basic rate of Income Tax. Finance costs include mortgage interest, interest on loans to buy furnishings and fees incurred when taking out or repaying mortgages or loans. No relief is available for capital repayments of a mortgage or loan.

When completing a tax return for income from a residential property it is possible to bring forward losses from previous years.

A MONTH OF LOCAL LANDMARKS

amily businesses are a key part of our local economy, and seventy years of trading is worthy of celebration. So, it was a pleasure to join one of our area’s leading agricultural businesses, family-run, Dalton Seeds, and in particular Peter Fox and Mathew Dalton and their team, to mark this landmark.

Another business expanding and attracting new talent is high precision engineering firm PCML, which has a head office in March alongside operations on five Cambridgeshire sites. I heard about how they played a key role during the pandemic in the ventilator challenge and are now well placed to take advantage of the growing funding for NHS diagnostic equipment as we deal with COVID backlogs.

I’m pleased to see the £5 million full fibre network rollout by CityFibre that will allow access to fast, reliable broadband is progressing well in March and is on track for the first homes to go live later this year. Much of the work that involves digging past homes in the south-east of the town is now complete and workers have moved into new areas. CityFibre’s new futureproof network means residents and businesses will be able to access Gigabit-speed broadband from a choice of Internet Service Providers. I’m delighted that planning is also underway to look at Whittlesey later in the year.

Regular readers will know a personal priority of mine is promoting school literacy, including with our annual Read to Succeed campaign. So, it was fantastic to learn that Benwick Primary School was one of just six schools in the country to have received a new children’s book library worth £20,000 and including one thousand new books. I joined the children for an inspiring talk and animation drawing masterclass by Cressida Cowell, author of the book series How to Train Your Dragon, a favourite of my children. It was a real joy to see the fun students are getting from experiencing their new library of books and discovering new authors.

I also recently joined pupils at Wisbech St Mary’s School Environmental Savers Club to help plant trees as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Green Canopy Project. Donated by The Woodland Trust, each tree has a tag with a number on it, so the 208 pupils feel they have ‘their’ own tree, which in the years to come will help them remember this scheme and their specific tree.

I have updated you many times on my campaign against proposals to build an enormous incinerator in Wisbech. Despite the objections of the community, the developer has persisted in progressing its proposals, although it is still at pre-application stage.

However, the developer has previously said he would be submitting his twice-delayed application for development consent to the Planning Inspectorate in Q2 2022. I wanted to reassure residents I will be keeping a close eye on developments. If an application is made, the Planning Inspectorate has up to twentyeight days to decide whether the application meets the standards required to be accepted for examination. As previously stated, I am concerned that the developer has not complied with the required consultation process with a failure to provide key information to the community. I remain convinced this proposal is wholly unsuitable and will continue to fight against it on behalf of constituents.
