FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

EXCITING RESEARCH Our family historians are looking forward to Twelfth Night 2022. Every ten years from 1841, the census has been taken, and after one hundred years it is released for public view. It lists everyone living in England and Wales, their addresses, plus lots of interesting details.

The 1921 census will be available in January 2022.

This is an exciting time for family historians, as they will be able to further their knowledge about their ancestors' families and lives etc.

In the 1911 census I was able to find the names of both my great grandparents. My paternal great grandfather was Benjamin, born in 1852; it gave the name of his farm and where he was born. I know he died in 1912, so I will now be able to find where his wife, my great grandmother, went to live. Being the first census taken after the Great War, it will show lots of differences in the families and where they were now living.

Over the past three years, huge teams have been working on transcribing and checking the 1921 census; there are more than 8.3 million to transcribe, giving the details of thirty-eight million people captured in more than twenty million colour images. These will be available for us, the public, to view from January 6th (Twelfth Night) on the website of Find My Past. Members of the Fenland FHS will be enjoying a special Zoom presentation from Paul Nixon of FindMyPast on January 24th, detailing what the 1921 census can offer.

So, I wish my fellow family historians good hunting.

This will be the last one for many years, as the 1931 census was destroyed during the war, and the 1941 was not taken due to the war, so the next census available will be the 1951 census.

MONTHLY MEETINGS. These are held on the fourth Thursday of each month in Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm. Everyone welcome even if your family does not originate from around here. Members free. Visitors £2.

Our JANUARY MEETING. On Thursday, January 27th, 2022. We welcome back Steve MANNING with a talk about ‘How to Research through Newspapers’ an excellent source for family stories.

The FEBRUARY MEETING is on Thursday, February 24th when we will welcome Kevin RODGERS, whose talk will be about the history of The Octagon Church.

COMPUTER RESEARCH SESSIONS. Our team of experienced researchers offer help and advice to anyone interested in researching their family history.

We hold two a month; on the FIRST TUESDAY of each month in Wisbech Library from 10am-12noon and on the SECOND MONDAY of the month in Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay near Downham Market, from 11am-2.30pm. You will find us in The Barn Restaurant.

In addition, our researchers are willing to attend other events and/or meetings. If there is WiFi available we can offer family research. OUR SPEAKERS are available to give talks to local groups.

Making Tax Digital FOR VAT

T

he next round of Making Tax Digital for VAT comes into force from April 1st, 2022. This

requires VAT registered businesses with turnover under £85,000 to be compliant.

This means that Making Tax Digital for VAT will apply to all VAT-registered businesses from this date, including those voluntarily registered for VAT, meaning you must keep VAT records digitally and send returns using Making Tax Digital compatible software.

Making Tax Digital for VAT requires you to keep some records digitally, including: • Your business name • The address of your principal place of business • Your VAT registration number • Details of any VAT accounting schemes that you use Most businesses will need to record for each invoice (or ‘supply’ in the VAT Notice terminology) the time and date of supply (tax point date), the net value (excluding any VAT) and the VAT rate used to calculate VAT. Some businesses will need to keep more or less information, depending on their VAT scheme and circumstances.

If you print or even handwrite invoices or receipts, then you’ll need to transfer the VAT accounting information to your accounting software before you submit your VAT Return. However, remember not to destroy the paperwork because you could require it for other aspects of your accounting.

These cloud accounting software solutions are user friendly and will enable you to keep your finances in control. They streamline the recording and reporting process by letting you take photos of invoices/receipts and uploading them directly to synch with your business bank account – all via an app on your phone or tablet.

Cloud accounting solutions use bank feeds to import live data, this reduces the time needed to undertake manual data entry. They are easy to use on the go and can improve the cashflow of your business. This can, in turn help in making crucial business decisions as there will be a better picture of finances with the real time information.

We would recommend that all self-employed businesses and landlords with annual business or property income above £10,000 start keeping digital records and providing updates to HMRC electronically as they will be included in the next round from April 2024.

It is important that all VAT registered business now come on board with these changes.

The twinkling Christmas lights are gone, our bank account may be looking a little empty, and we’re feeling bloated from copious amounts of turkey and chocolate (not to mention the booze!)

How can we overcome this bleak month?

Having experienced poor mental health myself, here are a few feel-good tips…

Do things that you enjoy. I realise that sounds pretty obvious, but I’m not just talking about binge-watching your favourite TV show or eating a bunch of snacks; I mean something that truly feeds your soul. Something wholesome and joyous. For me, it’s reading.

Or drinking my morning cup of coffee in the garden. Which leads to my next point…

Get outside! Yes, I know January weather is rubbish, but there is no better feeling than coming home from a walk, out of the cold, and snuggling down with a warm drink. Such a simple way to feel accomplished and boost those endorphins.

Look after your health. As tempting as it is to hibernate until the weather warms, it is so important to take care of ourselves. What makes us feel better in the short run may not be what is best for us.

Why not give “Dry January” a try? Alcohol may be a tempting short-term fix, but it is actually a depressant. It can do wonders for both our body and mind to take a break.

Don’t be afraid to say no. This is a tricky one! Life becomes so full of commitments and obligations, it can often feel difficult to say no, or perhaps we invent excuses. Isn’t it strange that we prioritise our physical health over our mental health? It feels acceptable to call in sick with a stomach bug, but maybe not when we’re struggling with stress or anxiety, which is equally as important.

Be kind. Not just to others, which is a guaranteed endorphin booster, but to ourselves! Think about how you would speak to a dear friend. Would we tell them they are fat, lazy, or not good enough?

Absolutely not! ‘Journaling’ can be a real help here – making a list of things we are thankful for, or that we like about ourselves.

But most importantly, REACH OUT. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help from friends, family, or your GP. And if it’s urgent, the lovely Samaritans are at the end of the phone 24/7 on 116 123.

Give yourself permission to look after yourself, to be kind to yourself.

Cheesy Leeks & Ham Quick and simple to make, and low in carbohydrates - this satisfying and tasty dish is perfect for the new year! You can also try serving it with jacket potatoes... just bake them in the oven for forty minutes before cooking the leeks, then split them open and serve the leeks on top.

Method Ingredients

8 small leeks, white part only 8 slices cooked ham 100g grated Cheddar cheese 2 tbsp Dijon mustard 6 tbsp crème fraîche (full or half-fat)

• Heat oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Cook the leeks in a pan of boiling salted water for four to five minutes or until just tender. Drain and cool under a cold tap to stop them from cooking any further, then drain again well and pat dry on kitchen paper.

• Wrap each leek in a slice of ham, then arrange, side-by-side, in a large baking dish. Mix the cheddar in a bowl with the mustard and crème fraîche, until well combined. Season to taste. Spread over the leeks, then bake for fifteen to twenty minutes until bubbling and golden brown. Serve at once with plenty of crusty bread to mop up the juices.

King was killed in Iraq in 2006, when his son was just seven months old, but his wife Dana Canedy, played by Chante Adams, keeps all the poignant letters in a book for their son.

Party Time Vanessa Pearson The turn of a year and it’s that time again - funny hats, party poppers and often, some outlandish seasonal outfits. There will probably be more this year than last but even then, there’s likely to be a measure of pandemic-fuelled restraint.

One thing is for certain as we head into January 2022, the cost will be counted as party bills are settled.

As long as the event is held every year; open to all employees; the total cost, including VAT, is less than £150 per person this will be a non-taxable benefit in kind. Non-employee guest attendees can be included and it is free of PAYE tax and National Insurance contributions.

However, take care not to exceed this total per person or the entire figure becomes taxable, not just the excess. It is also important to note the £150 is for the whole year, not per event.

Where it is not possible to hold one function, for example for different departments or offices, these will still be exempt as long as all employees can attend one of them. HM Revenue & Customs has confirmed that ‘virtual’ functions using IT will also be exempt as long as all the criteria are met.

Festive gifts can also be tax free if the cost is less than £50 per head, as these are considered “Trivial Benefits”. Gifts such as noncash vouchers, wine or chocolates can all be given as long as it is not a reward for service. Benefits provided to directors of smaller companies are capped at £300 per year.

DON’T BE CAUGHT IN A PHISHING SCAM PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

Phishing scams have been around almost since the inception of the Internet, and they are not going away any time soon. In fact, they are becoming increasingly common as fraudsters think up new tricks to try and steal your personal information.

Usually carried out over email - although social media, messaging services and apps are also used - a basic phishing attack attempts to trick the victim into doing what the scammer wants. That might be handing over passwords to make it easier to hack a company or altering bank details so that payments go to fraudsters instead of the correct account. The emails claim to be from organisations such as ISPs (in particular BT and TalkTalk), banks, PayPal, eBay, Google, Apple etc. They will look genuine with all the right icons, trademarks, and fonts that you’d expect to see.

The emails and text messages normally contain genuine-looking links to the relevant, but of course bogus, websites, asking you to login to the secure page of the website with your email address and password. Some may ask you to install a piece of software to do a security scan (installing viruses or keystroke loggers along the way). Once your details have been ‘phished’, crooks can then use this information to perform identity theft and bank fraud.

How do you spot a phishing scam?

• You receive an email, text or phone call claiming to be from a bank, telecommunications provider or other business you regularly deal with, asking you to update or verify your details.

• The email or text message does not address you by your proper name and may contain typing errors and grammatical mistakes.

• The website address does not look like the address you usually use and is requesting details the legitimate site does not normally ask for.

Be aware and proactive: • NEVER click on any links or

open attachments from emails claiming to be from your bank or another trusted organisation which ask you to update or verify your details – DELETE IT. • Do an internet search using the names or exact wording of the email to check for any references to a scam – many scams can be identified this way.

• Secure websites can be identified by the ‘https:’ rather than ‘http:’ at the start of the internet address. Legitimate websites that ask you to enter confidential information are generally encrypted to protect your details.

• Never provide your personal, credit card or online account details if you receive a call/ email claiming to be from your bank or any other organisation.

Instead, make an independent check with the organisation in question.

• If you receive a call, text or mail from a fraudulent organisation report it to Action Fraud at https://www.actionfraud. police.uk/, emails can be forwarded to report@phishing. gov.uk

TIME TO START AFRESH

T

he beginning of the new year brings hopefulness. Regardless of the challenges of the last twelve months, it’s a time to start afresh.

A number of areas where there has been recent progress will come to their completion, for example the opening of the long-awaited Kings Dyke crossing in Whittlesey and the roundabout improvements at Guyhirn. This builds on improvements like the upgrade at March rail station and the newly refurbished March Community Centre. Nationally we will continue to respond in the new year to the changing path of COVID. It has given fresh prominence to the wonder of science, as our vaccine developers at Oxford University have shown. It has also shown how in government we can deliver quicker and in new ways, as was the case with food parcels at home for the clinically extremely vulnerable or the development at pace of the furlough

scheme and self-employed income support scheme.

This year has also seen a much greater focus on the environment. The lockdowns were tough in a host of ways, but they also led many to a reconnection with nature, such as through daily walks. Likewise, COP26 in Glasgow was a success in taking action on a range of climate change measures, bringing together one hundred and forty different countries.

The last year has brought sadness. The impact of COVID on families losing loved ones. The other medical impacts that the disruption of the virus has caused. Alongside this a huge economic cost. Within Parliament we lost my friends Sir David Amess and James Brokenshire within a week of each other. David did achieve city status for Southend; he had written to me about this when I was appointed as Minister for the Cabinet Office.

There are always challenges ahead, but also much to celebrate and be grateful for. I wish you and your families all the very best for 2022.

As part of her work with her charity The Anti-Slavery Collective, HRH Princess Eugenie, and fellow founder Julia de Boinville, met with partners the Rosmini Centre, Fenland District Council, the police, and The Ferry Project to find out more about the hands-on work they’re doing to tackle the exploitation and trafficking of vulnerable workers, and support victims and survivors.

Princess Eugenie also fulfilled a wish to visit the Wisbech and Fenland Museum to learn about the history of the anti-slavery movement and prominent eighteenth-century abolitionist Thomas Clarkson.
