Welcome to your December issue... A very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2021. As a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on what has been another particularly challenging year for many. Mass vaccinations against COVID-19 have certainly slowed down the pandemic’s deadly progress, and we have managed to return to a form of normality. Next year may even see some of us searching for our passports and getting stir-crazy in airport queues again! Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions. But it is you, our readers, who make everything worthwhile for us, so many thanks to you all. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2022 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x A traditional Christmas looks like it’s back on the agenda this year after the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic hampered last year’s celebrations. Families and friends will hopefully be able to join together for the festive season following the success of the national vaccine roll-out. Last year’s festivities were naturally subdued, with a lack of preChristmas get-togethers because of the local lockdown, however this year it seems likely that things will be more like they were pre-pandemic. I hope this seasonal issue helps put you in the mood for the holiday period as we bring you all the latest news and offerings from the local community. We always strive to give you the best possible publication each month, but to do so we need your help, so please continue to keep us informed of your activities in the New Year. So, on behalf of all the team on the magazine, enjoy your Christmas and New Year celebrations, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you again in 2022…

Your Garden

December Gardening Tips

W

e are approaching the shortest day and moving towards the months that bring the worst weather for the gardener.

Weather predictions for this winter are influenced by La Nina and show that we may be in for a cold December, with persistent snow. Time to sit back with a warm toddy and plan next year’s crops and reflect on what went well this year. Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. You can harvest lots of vegetables for Christmas plates, including parsnips, leeks, and winter cabbages, all of which can be left in the ground until you need them. It is difficult to harvest crops from frozen soil, so if temperatures plummet, cover the soil with straw. Harvest Brussels sprouts when they are around one inch in diameter, before they ‘blow open.’ Pick them from the base of the plant up, twisting them away from

the plant. If you have grown potatoes for Christmas, they should be ready now. Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen. • Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for, and repair, any holes. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year!

The Advantages of Traineeships and Apprenticeships TO EMPLOYERS

Deborah Robinson, trainee accountant at Stephenson Smart

P

employers get a £15,000 allowance per annum to offset against the amount they have to pay.

Kickstart Scheme These six-month job placements are aimed at supporting young people who are currently on Universal Credit to develop the skills and experience they need to find permanent work. For each Kickstart job, the Government will cover the cost of twenty-five hours a week at the relevant National Minimum Wage in addition to pension and National Insurance contributions for a period of six months. Employers will also receive £1500 per placement to cover set-up costs and provide wraparound support for the young person.

At Stephenson Smart, we believe believe in nurturing talent within our organisation and have an active apprenticeship scheme. We currently have twentyfour trainees working across our six offices.

art of the Government’s Plan for Jobs to help the UK economy recover from the COVID pandemic includes support for employers to take on trainees. There are different schemes available:

Traineeships Traineeships are a skills development programme for people of all ages that includes a work experience placement and gets people ready for employment or an apprenticeship. Businesses can benefit from an employer incentive of £1000 when a work experience placement of more than seventy hours has been completed. This incentive can be claimed for up to ten learners per region and employers can decide how to use the money. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships employ people to do a real job while studying for a formal qualification. There are two ways of accessing Government funding to support an apprenticeship. Large organisations will pay a levy of 0.5 percent of the wage bill. Levy-paying

If an organisation’s wage bill is under £3 million, they don't have to pay the levy. Instead, the employer agrees a payment schedule with a registered training provider and pays 5% towards the cost of the apprenticeship training to them directly. The Government will pay the remaining 95%.

One of our newest trainees is Deborah Robinson, who is based at our March office. Deborah, who grew up in Stevenage, moved over to train in accounting after a successful career in the equestrian industry running a riding school. Deborah said: “I came to a bit of a crossroads and thought it would be good to try something else and after spending so long working outside an office with a roof over my head seemed quite appealing! I’m really enjoying it and everyone has been lovely and supportive, so I’m looking forward to learning and progressing.” If your business is struggling to recruit, offering a traineeship or apprenticeship scheme might be the answer, and could make someone’s Christmas.

Vine Lawʼs First Year And Beyond! ine Law has just celebrated its first birthday and what a busy year it’s been!

The firm opened its doors‘virtually’ in November 2020, founded by Melinda Smith, Kim Cross and Cath Collins. In May we were joined by a new partner, Kieren Cross, to help with wills, LPAs, estate planning and probate applications, and also by Laura Ball, who assists clients with their residential and commercial property work. Opening a new firm in the middle of a pandemic presented its challenges. We already knew that we wanted to ‘do law differently’; the restrictions placed upon the country as a whole, as well as the changing mindset and needs of people, made us think more creatively about how to best help our clients. The way we have approached this so far has been well received, but we are always looking at ways to improve and feedback of any kind is always well received to help us with that – so please feel free to give it! We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the clients who instructed us in our first year and to the local businesses and professionals who have offered their support from day one. The encouragement, support, and advice we have received has made the hard work seem easier. What's to come in our second year... We’re starting our second year by launching the Vine Law App. It will enable our clients and

• • • • •

professional contacts to be able to work with us more easily and to be kept up to date with the progress of their matters as soon as they happen, as well as easily being able to see what steps have been taken and what else needs to be done. We’ll also be launching our new HR subscription service shortly. This service will enable businesses to easily access HR advice as soon as it is needed, rather than waiting to get advice after a difficult situation turns into something more serious. We’re looking at more ways to help businesses and start-ups with all their legal needs, as well as helping private individuals with their planning and ‘future proofing’ to protect themselves and their families and, of course, helping with issues that life may throw their way. We’re looking forward to continuing to establish and grow close relationships with fellow professionals and the local community. We’re great believers in collaboration which has already benefitted our clients enormously, as well as giving us the satisfaction of being able to recommend other trusted professionals when our clients may need them. If you are a like-minded business and this is something which interests you, please give as a call – we love learning about new businesses and seeing how we can work together. If you want to learn more about Vine Law, how we work and what we do, visit our website at www.vinelaw.co.uk or call us on 01945 898090.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY By Bridget Hunter Your family do not need to have originated from this area to enjoy our meetings. Family research is widespread, as are our members’ interests. Why not attend one of our meetings? We are a friendly lot and enjoy sharing our knowledge. The meetings start with refreshments and social chatting including an exchange of information, and online research if required. Also available is our book stall and reference library, followed by a talk by guest speakers on various subjects. The first meeting of 2022 will be held on Thursday, January 27th from 7pm-9pm in Wisbech Library. We will welcome back Steve Manning with a talk about ‘How to Research through Newspapers’, an excellent source of family stories. I have been researching family history for various people during the last few months. I have found many strange twists in name spellings etc. including several births I could not find under the name I had been given. Several were because the child had been born before the parents married, so the birth registration was under the maiden name of the mother, then later the child took their father’s surname. Often there was a clue in that the child had been given the father’s surname as a middle name. This does not always mean that the child was born illegitimate. In Scotland it was the tradition to give the mother’s maiden name as a middle name, or even the grandparents’ surname(s) as a middle name.

The strangest one I have found recently is the child who was born to an unmarried mother and left in a children’s home as she was unable to care for her. I was given her name as Brenda Iris WATSON (not the real names to protect her identity). I failed to find a birth for her, but after asking a few questions I was told her mother was a Doris SHEPHERD. I searched for the name under SHEPHERD and found Brenda. After receiving her birth certificate I realised her mistake. Her birth forenames were listed as Brenda Iris Watson, no father shown and mother was Doris SHEPHERD. Brenda had assumed her surname was WATSON when in fact it was her mother’s surname SHEPHERD. I guess her mother had given a clue to the father’s name by giving it to her daughter as a middle name. Brenda had used the name WATSON all her life including marrying under that name. COMPUTER RESEARCH SESSIONS These are led by our team of experienced researchers, offering help and advice to anyone attending. We hold two a month; on the first Tuesday of each month in Wisbech Library from 10am-12 noon, with the second session on the second Monday of the month in Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay near Downham Market, from 11am-2.30pm. You will find us in The Barn Restaurant.

DEFIB ROLL-OUT

KICKS OFF AT RUGBY CLUB

W

isbech Rugby Club has been presented with a defibrillator as part of the town council’s commitment to increase the availability of the equipment in the town. The council recently decided to purchase three defibrillators and Mayor of Wisbech Councillor Andrew Lynn presented one of them to the rugby club when the 1st XV played Norwich Union at Chapel Road. The donation of the defibrillator follows an incident in August 2021 when Paul Murray, playing for Wisbech Town’s walking football team in a friendly against South Lincs Steelers, collapsed on the pitch at Fountain Fresh Park. The Steelers had received their defibrillator by an anonymous donation five years previously and it had sat unused until the incident when Paul collapsed with an untraceable pulse. Team officials administered the lifesaving defibrillator's automated brief electrical current to the polarised cardiac muscle, allowing depolarisation and re-establishment of a proper rhythm. Used alongside CPR, Paul’s vital signs were maintained until professional medical assistance arrived. Every minute’s delay giving CPR and defibrillation reduces a victim’s survival rate by seven to ten percent. The College of West Anglia is one among many course providers delivering training on basic life support, recovery position, use of automatic external defibrillator and reporting/recording the A.E.D usage. The course is delivered over a period of three hours at its King’s Lynn or Wisbech centre. Alternatively, the trainers can deliver this to groups of employees at a time and place to suit your business. Please contact them for further information at enquiries@cwa.ac.uk

People in Fenland Struggling With Debt Urged to

Seek Free Help Before Christmas

F

enland’s Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre based at Centenary and Wisbech Baptist Church is offering free debt help this winter.

Lin Stanton, the (Fenland) CAP Debt Centre Manager, said: “We know that most people want to have a nice Christmas but it’s hard to do when bills are piling up. Getting help now can take the pressure off and stop the worry and misery.

anyone worrying about how they’ll manage this Christmas.

“Christmas is supposed to be a lovely celebration, but we know that for many people in our area there’s not enough money to pay essential household bills. So, there’s nothing left to make Christmas Day special.

CAP client Joanne* said: “Like any single parent, I was doing my best. I had a job but I struggled to provide for us on the money I could earn. Looking back now I didn’t realise how much my finances impacted every aspect of my life.

“Our team is here to help with debt problems through our CAP Debt Help service and because we’re local we can also support clients practically too. “Over the years we’ve had all sorts of ways to help people make Christmas that little bit better by offering hampers, linking clients up with local food banks, arranging emergency shops, emergency fuel, support, encouragement and a friendly voice at the end of a phone.

“This year has been challenging enough with the coronavirus pandemic, so we want to encourage people to get help now so that they can have a more positive end to 2021.”

“Even though I was working hard to earn money, I was constantly having to deal with the feeling of disappointing my son. I heard about CAP and now everything has changed. This Christmas we have peace. And I realise that’s what makes my son happy.”

TOM’S BUSINESS VISION A SUCCESS Westbrook Window Repairs has enjoyed an excellent first year in business. It offers a top-quality service for a wide range of jobs including new windows and doors; misted windows; dropped doors; replacement locks and hinges; and cat and dog flaps.

FENCES SHEDS The company was formed in May 2019 by March man Tom Westbrook who has more than 26 years’ experience in manufacturing, fitting and repairing windows and has received a very positive response from satisfied local customers.

The business has been so successful that Tom has had to take on another person on an ad hoc basis to help with larger jobs. The majority of his work comes from the March area and he has praised the leads he has obtained via Discovering March magazine. He said: “We have had a very good response from entries in the magazine. People like the magazine and consequently tend to keep hold of the copies which means they are read by a lot of people over aDECKING long period of time.” TIMBER Tom is assisted in the business by his partner Suzanne, who said: "Tom provides an honest service, to local customers. He prides himself on his ability to repair most windows and doors, which is more cost effective for the customer. He is always happy to provide honest advice to look for a fixable solution to any problematic windows or doors. When new windows and doors are needed, he takes great pride in his work to ensure a satisfied customer every time.”

Tom (43) said: “The first year has gone even better than I had hoped. I’m proud to have had 836 ‘likes’ on my Facebook page with more than thirty five-star reviews.

Christmas – Think Charity Stuart Kierman It’s the festive season and a traditionally busy time for the numerous charities around Wisbech and district from the familiar high street names to the very small groups set up to support their own communities. The pandemic hit many of them very hard and survival for the less well-known was tough. The charity sector is among our specialist areas and we work with many trustees who play vital roles in their activities. As part of the annual Trustees’ Week we thanked our trustee contacts for the great work they do in playing an essential role in the governance of charities. They offer skills, knowledge and experience as they contribute to the trustee boards of many charities. Their strong personal commitment is essential for their charity’s aims and objectives. We believe that careful recruitment, selection and induction of trustees is vital and it is important that a trustee board is varied and provides the charity with a mix of key skills and experience. Responsibility for recruitment of trustees rests with the existing board of trustees. They may delegate the process to staff, but they still have the overall duty and control of the process. Finding potential trustees can be difficult. Personal recommendation and word of mouth are often the best way forward. Some charities advertise as a way to access a wider range of applicants. The Charity Commission recommends a four-step recruitment process: - Identify the need for a new trustee, the skills required and responsibilities the role will cover. - Find potential trustees for shortlisting and interviewing. - Vet potential trustees to ensure they meet the minimum requirements to be a trustee, consider conflicts of interest, other legal checks. - Appoint, including induction and information packs. We have vast experience across this sector. If you need help, then don’t hesitate to contact our Wisbech office

STAY SAFE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON By Steve Barclay MP

A

s we head into the festive season and start making plans to spend Christmas with families and loved ones, I very much hope that this year will be a celebration.

For many, the last twenty-or-so months has been a long, hard road and the national lockdown surrounding last Christmas was fraught with difficulties as families had to forego their usual festive reunion in order to keep safe in the midst of the worst pandemic in living memory. With some time still to go before Christmas and the very real presence of coronavirus still active in our communities, I hesitate to say that this year we’ll be back to normal. But I believe we’ve come a long way in our battle with this virus and our phenomenally successful vaccination programme puts us in a very different place to last year. However, I would urge everyone to do what you can to keep yourselves and your families safe – from booster jabs to continued handwashing, we can all take action to make this festive season as safe as possible. Getting out and about in the community over the last month, it has been great to see some of the results of the hard work that has continued quietly during the pandemic. It was a real pleasure to open the new look March Community Centre, which is a fantastic resource and will provide much valued support and new skills for local people in a fun, modernised, bright and fast internet-connected building conveniently located a short walk from the centre of town.

looking into the strengths of the area and what we can build upon to attract investment. Together with Fenland District Council, I’m working with leading national marketing firm, “thinking place”, in an exercise designed to help support plans to develop a Levelling Up Fund bid. “thinking place” has helped areas like Lowestoft and Hull transform their success rate in securing government investment. We are competing with other towns across the UK for investment and while there is much locally to be proud of and we’ve already made progress in securing investment in a number of areas, we can do more – and working together with clarity on how we want to communicate the potential of our area is key. Finally, I wanted to reassure you regarding my continued campaigning against the enormous incinerator proposals for Wisbech. I have written to the chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate to highlight the lack of response by developer MVV to the expert report I had commissioned on behalf of local residents in response to the consultation. The report identifies inaccuracies and misleading information that was presented in the consultation, with a lack of detail in multiple areas, including the adverse effects of the scheme. This incinerator will have an unimaginable impact on our area and the local community deserves a response. Photo: Steve Barclay, MP: opening March Community Centre

I’ve also been lucky enough to visit businesses and places across the country as part of my role in government, including at COP26 in Glasgow and the site of the new government hub in Peterborough. I hope you had the time and opportunity to feed into the focus groups and public workshops

Mulled Wine

This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!

Method

• Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick.

Ingredients Serves 6-8 people

• You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time.

2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 2 tsp mixed spice 8 tea bags 2 whole cinnamon sticks

D I S C O V E R I N G

• Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.

Top Tips

4 tsp whole cloves

150g semi-dried prunes

• Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates!

• You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy. • A white wine version is also an option, if your guests are not red wine lovers.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR DATA SECURE ON THE CLOUD PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

I

nternet cloud services are services such as Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox and GoogleDrive, which store your data on a server rather than on your computer’s hard drive, so you can access it from any internetenabled device anywhere in the world. Cloud providers store your files, photos and other documents to an online location, thus offering an alternative backup to conventional methods of file storage. But websites can get hacked and whilst it’s easy for us to blame corporations for poor security and hackers for maliciously attacking websites, there is often a third party at fault in these attacks: the users. The following are some useful tips, which will help boost your own data’s security in addition to that offered by whichever internet cloud service provider you chose to use.

Keep Your Computer Virus-Free It is imperative that your computer is virus-free, otherwise you run the risk of revealing your cloud log-in details. Make sure your virus scanner and anti-malware software is up-to-date, and that you run your anti-virus scanner on a regular basis. Read The User Guide If you are not sure what cloud storage to choose, or if you have any questions as to how a cloud service works, read the user agreement of the service you are planning to sign up for, however boring you may think it is. Be aware that your cloud service provider must keep your data as safe and secure as they can. A good provider will be able to offer several secure back-ups of your files, all stored in different locations. If the service provider only has one storage location, or if they reveal the exact physical whereabouts of their servers, their security may be compromised.

We wish all our customers a very

Be Serious About Passwords So many people still do not take password security seriously. Did you know that NINETY percent of all passwords can be cracked within seconds? Create STRONG passwords of at least eight characters with both uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Avoid Storing Sensitive Information The best way to protect any highly sensitive information, such as finances, is to keep it well away from the virtual world and use an alternative storage solution. Use An Encrypted Cloud Service Some cloud services provide local encryption and decryption of your files as well as storage and back-up. It means that the service takes care of both encrypting your files on your own computer and storing them safely on the cloud.

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear Unusual, fascinating and sometimes amusing, by the author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess’, Chris Donald

The House the National Trust doesn’t own

I

n 1895, a lady from Wisbech, a vicar and a lawyer got together to form something that would grow very big. It started out with a few hundred members and a piece of coastline in Wales. Its aim was to promote the permanent preservation for the nation of lands and buildings of beauty or historic interest. It would be called The National Trust. Little did they know how much it would grow. Octavia Hill got the idea of preserving things of historical interest when she was asked to help look after Sayes Court Garden in South East London. By 1914, nineteen years later, the Trust had seven hundred and twenty-five members, sixty-three properties and a small office in London but now, in 2021, it owns 620,000 acres, two hundred historic houses, forty-one castles and chapels, nine lighthouses, fifty-six villages, thirty-nine public houses and a gold mine. It is the biggest farmland

42

D I S C O V E R I N G

Wisbech

owner in the country with more than six hundred thousand acres and more than one thousand five hundred tenant farmers. It has more than thirteen thousand staff* and over five and a half million members*, more than the official supporters of both the Conservative and Labour parties added together. It was the first organisation of its kind and it has inspired many, many more and you can now find examples of it in over fifty countries. All this and it was just started by three people and one of them was Octavia Hill, the daughter of a bankrupt Wisbech merchant. Now, the National Trust does own some property in Wisbech. The main building is Peckover House, but as well as this it owns a small house by the barn which is rented. Next door, on the town side of Peckover House is Wainman House which is used as a NT holiday let as well as a small property DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 1

behind it. On the other side is a building with no downstairs windows which used to be rented to James Crowden, but, at the present moment, is left disused and is being repaired. As well as a two-acre walled garden, the Trust owns a massive fifty-eight acres of land behind Chapel Road car park, some of which is used by local sports clubs and the Grammar School, but a lot is just there for the people of Wisbech to enjoy. But, what is the property that the National Trust does not own? It is No. 7, South Brink, Wisbech, birthplace of Octavia Hill. And who does? The answer is… the Octavia Hill Birthplace Museum Trust with Chairman, Peter Clayton. It is incredible the lady from Wisbech should have had such a major part in this huge concern. This house is open to the public and it vividly describes Octavia and the good work she did. It is not expensive to go in and if you are a National Trust member there is a small reduction in the charge. So, if it wasn’t for Wisbech and Octavia Hill, we might not have the National Trust, or not as it was conceived. She believed that we all need space so it is not surprising that she got involved in an unsuccessful campaign to save Swiss Cottage

Fields in London but it was there where she met Robert Hunter, a solicitor. They went on to campaign, this time successfully, for three other open spaces. And then, with Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley from the Lake District, they went on to form the National Trust. The very first house the National Trust bought was Alfriston Clergy House built in 1350. Octavia heard about this property and immediately took an interest in it. After a series of complicated negotiations, the Trust finally bought it for the nominal sum of £10 in 1896. We should be thankful and grateful that the National Trust is looking after some of the old and important buildings in Wisbech and preserving some open spaces, but we hope they will always remember that they were set up for the permanent preservation of land and buildings of beauty and historical interest. Sometimes they become interested in other things which are not in their remit. Finally, The Duke of Westminster in 1895 said to Octavia: ‘Mark my words, Miss Hill, this is going to be a very big thing.’ All being well we look forward to the museum being open next year.
