Welcome to our August issue of your favourite community lifestyle magazine.

As I write, the Covid-19 focus has now moved onto the facemask, and whether or not they should be compulsory. Months ago, I remember reading a newspaper article about a lady who had been cutting up one of her bras to make a face mask.

The headline, of course, just had to be “Get it off your chest”! In a way, the face mask has become our new bra! It can be awkward to put on and feel uncomfortable, we don’t need to wear it around the house, but when we go outside without one on, everyone notices … especially the men!

I continue to be so impressed with the many ways people in our area have pulled together, sharing and caring, all keen to come out of this horrible pandemic, stronger than before. Businesses are contacting us with their ambitious plans for a better future. Every week seems a little closer to the time when we can say that we’re back to normal.

Meanwhile, let’s keep on our guard, follow the advice and keep caring for each other.

August Gardening Tips

A

ugust is the month when you reap the fruits of your labour and hopefully you will have a bumper harvest. In fact, sometimes you have far more than you can eat but there are several ways of preserving the fruit and vegetables for use through the winter months.

Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage. Root crops, such as carrots and parsnips should have their leaves and loose soil removed and then put into layers of damp sand. Potatoes should be dried off in the sun and then stored in hessian sacks. I went to the local fish and chip shop and they gave me their old paper potato bags!

There are not many things you can sow or plant now for harvesting this year, maybe salad leaves, a last planting of carrots or turnips and some leafy vegetables such as chard. However, as space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules; remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars.

• Prune gooseberry and currant bushes.

• Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.

• Make sure that you harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large.

• Cut to the ground all summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Tomatoes, pumpkins and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser.

• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

• Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid. Cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers.

Helpful advice for your F keys M

any of my customers ask me “what is the use of Function keys on my keyboard?” Or “what do the F1 through F12 keys do.

Indeed, these keys sit at the top of your keyboard, yet you may have hardly used them. Function Keys can help you use shortcuts and special functions and although they have default primary and secondary features, they are also capable of performing many other functions when used in combination with keys like Ctrl and Alt. On many keyboards, each of these keys will have additional functions like multimedia, sleep/ wake etc. However, in this article, we will talk about how to use them across browsers and MS Office.

F1 Almost every program comes with a Help Menu and pressing F1 while on the program will bring it up. Pressing F1 with the Windows key brings up Windows Help and Support. SHIFT + F1

reveals the formatting within a Word document. CTRL + ALT + F1 displays your PC’s Microsoft system information.

F2 F2 is considered an editing key.

To rename a file in File Explorer, select the file name you want to edit, press F2 and type the new name. Alt + Ctrl + F2 opens the Documents Library within the MS Office suite. Also: CTRL + F2 to choose the print preview command; CTRL + ALT + F2 to choose the open command (file menu).

F3 In File Explorer press F3 to search for specific files and folders.

Pressing F3 in almost all browsers including Google Chrome, Firefox Mozilla and Microsoft Edge allows you to search by launching the Find bar. Shift + F3 toggles between lower case and upper case for selected text in Word.

There’s no time like the present: care home residents and staff create a time capsule for Covid-19

August is normally a busy month for care homes with visiting entertainers, large garden parties and day trips out.

This year, however, Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech are thinking outside of the box to make August 2020 just as memorable despite lockdown restrictions.

‘Why not put it all in a time capsule’ was the inspiration which struck Activity Co-ordinator Julie one evening at home: “I was planning our August activities and trying to think of how we could remember the events of 2020 so far – it’s definitely a year we will never forget!”. The idea of a time capsule was born and the project is now up and running where, throughout August, residents and staff will come together to share their mementos.

Wedding photos, artwork, a telegram from the Queen, photographs, teddy bears, and a cookery book are just a few of the items suggested so far. The residential dementia and nursing home have even decided to include some PPE within the capsule to mark the unprecedented circumstances they

found themselves in! Joyce Rowland, a resident who wants to be included in the project, commented, “I would like to put in the time capsule a copy of my wedding photos alongside my bear called little John as I hope this would be interesting for others to find”.

The media stories surrounding food shortages back in March sparked fond memories of cooking for resident Sylvia Stokes and she explained how she would like to share the positivity forward, “I would like to put some recipes from my favourite cooking book as I loved to cook and host when I was at home.”

Deputy manager Sarah will be including a picture of her niece Eden and some of the posters she drew for the home to cheer up residents and

staff alike, “Eden enjoyed colouring the pictures for myself, all of the staff and residents which lifted our spirits so it seems a perfect idea to put some of them in our time capsule.” The capsule will also include posters that the residents coloured in to say thank you to key workers and pictures of when Norfolk Fire Brigade came to clap for the carers.

Once completed, the capsule will be placed in their summer house underneath the plaque, ‘Orchard House Time Capsule 2020, a Year Never to be Forgotten’.

It’s not just the global pandemic which the home is keen to remember, but cherished individuals too. Residents, their loved ones and staff are the heartbeat of Orchard House Care Home so when a beloved member of staff suffered a tragic loss during childbirth earlier in the year, everyone came together to comfort them and their family.

In support of their colleague, the Orchard House family are going to be helping to raise funds for a Maternity Bereavement Suite at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust, King’s Lynn. In August, the home will be holding a fund-raising extravaganza with fun activities, music and a cake sale. The day will conclude in a live auction in a bid to raise vital funds for this much-needed service. FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Sadly we are still not able to hold our monthly meetings or attend our research sessions in the Wisbech Library and Baytree Hilgay. We have set up a face book page for our members to keep in touch and exchange their thoughts and queries. Our experienced researchers are being kept busy helping members with their research I have recently completed a family research for a gentleman now living in the Isle of MULL Scotland. To my delight his family had adopted the Scottish way of naming their children by using a maiden surname as a middle name for their offspring.

Making my search so much easier I was able very quickly to get back 7 generations.

I am delighted to share more of our member’s memories with you. Names not included.

MEMBERS MEMORIES During the war our member was living in a country lane, the children living in the lane gathered to play in the field opposite their houses, they chatted about hearing their parents talking about celebrating Bonfire Night with fires and cooking potatoes in the fire. They thought it very unfair and decided to celebrate themselves. So in secret they gathered firewood and potatoes. On the evening of the 5th

November they gathered in the field and lit their fire ready to bake their potatoes. As the fire got underway they heard the approach of a fire engine followed by the Police and Air Raid Wardens. The fire was quickly put out and the children scolded. Sadly for our member whose father a fireman, was on the fire engine and was very embarrassed, our member was put over his knee and spanked in front of everyone.

CELEBRATING VE DAY Another member remembers enjoying a street party to celebrate VE Day. The women, who eked out their rations to put on great spread, supplied all the food.

Remember fruit from abroad had not been available during the war, yet there were banana sandwiches to enjoy. Our members’ mother had made them from mashed parsnips with butter and flavouring. Sweets were rationed but there were sweets for everyone, her mother made peppermint creams made from powdered milk and flavoured with peppermint essence and fudge made from honey. Sugar was on ration so all the cakes were sweetened with her fathers honey. It was a great party.

We hope you are all keeping well and safe and that we are soon free of this coronavirus and able to meet once more.

Check Your Tax Code Advises Scott Bishop

Just as swallows and swifts return regularly each year, a brown paper envelope from HM Revenue & Customs annually drops through the letterbox. It’s your tax code and can be a little confusing but it is extremely important to understand.

Made up of a small string of numbers and letters, it informs your employer or pension provider how much tax-free allowance you are entitled to.

An incorrect code will have very real consequences. If too much tax is being deducted from your monthly income, the money you receive immediately reduces. If not enough tax is deducted HMRC will attempt to recover the tax due, either through a tax code adjustment or as a balancing payment following submission of a Self-Assessment Return.

So how does the taxman or taxwoman generate these codes?

They are based on information that HMRC holds on file and gathered either through Real Time Information or Self-Assessment Returns. Unfortunately, these figures can still be incorrect, usually as a result of updates not triggering new codes and therefore the inclusion of historical amounts.

Therefore, it is vital that tax codes are regularly reviewed.

It is also worth noting that where a tax payer has opted to make payment of their tax liability through their tax code, that from March of this year, HMRC will now look to adjust the tax payer’s code immediately, rather than wait for a future tax year, as is currently the case.

COUNTRY COURT SAYS ‘THANK YOU’ TO HARD-WORKING CARE STAFF AT LYNCROFT CARE HOME WITH GIFTS. 7th July 2020; Staff at Country Court’s Lyncroft Care Home in Wisbech received a ‘Thank You’ gift from the Kachra family, owners of the Country Court group this week. The company operates 32 care homes across the UK employing over 2000 staff, all of whom will receive the gifts as thanks for their continued work caring for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Country Court CEO Alykhan Kachra said “Our staff have been amazing throughout this pandemic, putting our residents before themselves and their own families. Many have worked long hours and extra shifts, we felt they deserved a treat, and this would be a great way to say thank you and to acknowledge the sacrifices that people continue to make”.

Company Secretary Tina Cawood said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from our customers, both old and new.

It has been an absolutely fantastic response from them, and we want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to them. It was a particularly worrying time when the lockdown first started back in March and everyone was unsure of what was going to happen but the support we have received has been amazing.”
