Welcome to Your May Issue.

Welcome to this on-line version of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. Few of us will have lived through such a period as this, responding to the lethal Covid-19 pandemic, and having to adapt our lives to new, and at times very challenging, routines, in order to keep ourselves and others virus-free. As with anything though, a positive attitude is worth its weight in gold and much of what our regular contributors are including for you here in their articles seems to bear this out.

On a personal note, I feel fortunate in that our family is together, our dog (and yours truly!) are getting more exercise than ever before, and our spirits remain high, (unlike the levels in some of our bottles!)

This month it is 2 years since Discovering Wisbech Magazine launched! So although this is going out in a different way to usual, we hope you enjoy it just as much. We hope that it brings you a sense of community spirit during this time and know that things will be back to normal so soon. I can imagine you’re going stir-crazy in isolation, I certainly am!

I now finally understand why my dog tries to bolt out of the front door every chance he gets. I’ve never been one for ‘daily exercise’, wish I was, but now that I can’t leave the house, it seems to be all I want to do! I pine for that one walk a day; my poor dogs are shattered. In all seriousness, this unprecedented time is scary, for everyone. And all we need is a little bit of help through. Here at Discovering, we really hope that this magazine brings you that, and we hope you enjoy it. And I would personally just like to say the biggest thank you to the NHS and key workers. We will forever be in your debt. Stay safe everyone.

May Gardening Tips

W

hat strange times we are living through at the moment and, with the lockdown in operation, we need to keep fit both in mind and body. What better way than to enjoy your garden, either by working in it or sitting with a cuppa (and cake!) or glass of something a little stronger, admiring your hard work? Much research has been carried out into the health and well-being benefits of gardening, the garden and green spaces.

Conclusive evidence shows that our general physical and mental health are improved and the benefits of being in the garden run much deeper than just exercise. A King’s Fund report on the health benefits of gardening found that they were broad and diverse, with research showing significant reductions in depression and anxiety and improved social functioning. Gardening can also help maintain independence and prevent cognitive decline.

Gardeners might also be delighted to learn that the number of calories burnt from thirty minutes of gardening is comparable to playing badminton, volleyball or practising yoga!

At the time of writing the weather has been amazing, I can’t remember having such a warm and sunny April and yet I have looked at records from the past few years and on a number of occasions it has been “the hottest Easter on record!” However, we do seem to have been blessed with some particularly good April weather and as many of us are at home there is plenty of time to spend in the garden or at the allotment, let’s hope it continues. The only problem is how do we get plants etc if the garden centres are closed? I have bought seeds and some summer bulbs from the supermarket, although some of them are in short supply, and Waterside Garden Centre are taking orders online – I received a delivery of compost within a few days of ordering. There are other

companies still functioning online but stocks are low and some delivery times long, try www.gardeningexpress.co.uk or www. directseeds.co.uk I know that because we now have the time a lot of people, who do not normally grow their own, are trying their hand at growing their own produce and flowers from seeds. I took an idea from Adam Frost on Gardener’s World and planted rocket seeds in a spare disposable aluminium turkey tray that I did not use at Christmas. This started me off on a mission for any old containers I could use for growing; I found broken plastic boxes, small wooden crates etc – so long as there is sufficient drainage you can use anything – and now I have an array of ‘junk’ in a corner of the garden. You can also intersperse vegetable plants in your mixed border.

For those who do have vegetable plots or allotments, May is a very busy time and a difficult month to judge as the weather can vary: we sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use ‘bottle cloches’. Cut down the two litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas.

Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so to maximise your space you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing.

Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast- growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty.

Also, with the warmer weather come the pests!

To get rid of aphids try these suggestions: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

• Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the plot.

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums.

Black fly is a real pest on broad beans and nipping off the growing buds help or a quick blast with a hose or try one of the tips above.

Jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage.

• Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try ‘succession sowing’ a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages.

Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting – enjoy!

COVID-19 Briefing: Child Contact During The Coronavirus Lockdown As part of the measures the Government has introduced to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, a lockdown has been brought into force to limit the spread of the virus. Whilst any measures to tackle the growing public health crisis is welcome, it does raise questions as to how separated parents can maintain as normal a routine as possible for their children.

The March 23rd Lockdown When parents separate, it is important for the children of the family to maintain relationships with both parents, through regularly spending time with them. This situation became more complicated on Monday, March 23rd, 2020 after the Government announced the ‘Rules on Staying at Home and Away from Others’. These rules only allow a person, and this includes children, to leave the house for essential shopping, daily exercise, medical need or to attend essential work. Parents will want to act in the best interests of their children and therefore may be confused by the best course of action. Abiding by The Stay at Home Rules will help to keep their children safe, but they will not want to disrupt any previously agreed arrangement with the other parent, knowing that keeping to a regular contact schedule is also in their children’s best interests.

How long will the measures last?

It is not clear at the moment with it having been extended for at least another three weeks on April 16th.

The difficulty is that given the unprecedented nature and sheer scale of the pandemic, it is not clear how long the effects of COVID-19 will last.

Maintaining Contact Wherever Possible Many parents are understandably worried about travel and contact amid the current coronavirus lockdown but contact between children and their non-resident parent should continue to take place as far as possible.

The Government has confirmed through its published guidance that contact can and should continue,

notwithstanding other travel and social restrictions that have been put in place.

What if We Suspect infection at either Household?

Just because there is an exception to the mandatory ‘stay at home’ requirement, it does not mean that children have to move between homes. In these unusual times, separated parents will need, more than ever, to work openly and constructively with each other to ensure the welfare of their children is met. Clearly if one parent, or members of their household, is showing symptoms or has been in contact with somebody who is showing symptoms, it may be appropriate to temporarily suspend face-to-face contact, to prevent the risk of infection. Should that be necessary, it will be important to ‘make up for this’, through regular and meaningful telephone calls and sessions on video chat apps such as Facetime and Skype. The key message is that, in circumstances where coronavirus restrictions cause the letter of a court order to be varied, the spirit of the order should still be upheld by both parents making safe alternative arrangements for the children.

Working together in the best interests of your children Provided both parents and the children are safe and well, however, and showing no symptoms, direct contact can continue to take place. Parents should

A Dog’s Life...

Luna’s Lockdown Diary

S

omething's changed around here lately, but I can't put my paw on what it is... the Hoomans that I live with are ALWAYS HOME – I mean, ALL OF THEM, ALL OF THE TIME! Hooman Dad used to leave the house every morning and then come back again at feeding time at the end of the day but now, instead of leaving in his car, he walks up to the end of the garden and goes into what looks like a huge, wooden kennel – I think I've heard them call it the 'offiss'? Dunno, just looks like a big posh kennel to me!

He comes back into the house for feeds occasionally during the day and sometimes I go up there to see him and ask if he wants to play but he usually just tries to get me to lie down in the kennel while he does whatever it is that he's doing – boring! I then whine for a bit until he lets me out – doesn't normally take long.

Walks are way more fun at the moment though! We all go together – Hooman Dad, Hooman Mum and the two smaller Hoomans (although sometimes they don't seem to want to go and they make loud, whining noises which seem to make Hooman Mum and Hooman Dad a bit cross). But anyway, off we go, to all my favourite places like the fields or by the river. We used to stop and meet other Hoomans and their dogs along the way but now we seem to give everyone else that we see a wide berth... I mean, I know I sometimes smell a bit but I'm pretty sure it's not that bad?!

So, all in all, home life is pretty good – I'm getting loads more attention! Before 'the change', a lot of the time it was just me and Hooman Mum at home. Her 'offiss' is in the house and when she would go in there, I would just go and have a nap somewhere

nearby (sometimes on the sofa when she wasn't looking).

She seems ok but I think the two smaller Hoomans can be quite disobedient and they ask for food way more than I do! They ask for something called 'a snack' A LOT during the day... Hooman Mum sometimes lets them have one but this is usually accompanied by an eye roll and some muttering under her breath which I can't understand but it sounds a bit like 'for duck's sake' – I don't know what ducks have to do with snacks but I've seen them down by the river before... maybe they're always hungry too?

Hooman Mum seems to cheer up when she opens a big bottle of something red. I don't know what it is but her and Hooman Dad often sit and have a few glasses of it in the evening when the smaller Hoomans have gone upstairs for the night (although they do sometimes come back down and ask for another snack and then the eye rolling starts up again).

One thing I am a bit sad about though is the change when someone delivers something to the house... I used to love hearing a knock at the door because it usually meant there was someone new to meet and sniff and get a fuss from but now, no one stops long enough to say hello or pat me on the head! I'm a Labrador for goodness sake – I have an unflappable desire to be everyone's friend but I can't even get close... I have heard the Hoomans use the words 'social distancing' a lot lately and wonder if this is what they mean? Whatever it is, I hope things go back to normal soon before we all go barking mad...

SPICY BEEF AND WATERCRESS SALAD Ingredients

For the salad (serves 2): 1 bunch watercress, torn into pieces 1 small onion, thinly sliced 1 tomato, deseeded and thinly sliced 300g beef sirloin, trimmed Pinch of salt 1tsp black peppercorns, crushed 1 red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced For the dressing: 2tbsp white wine vinegar 1tbsp vegetable oil 1tsp sugar

Watercress is in season so make the most of its mustardy bite with this quick and easy salad.

Method

1 To make the dressing, place all the dressing ingredients in a bowl and stir well, until the sugar is dissolved.

2 Put the watercress, onion, and tomato in a mixing bowl, add the dressing and toss the salad. Set aside.

3 Coat the steaks with the peppercorns and season with a little salt. Cook under a hot grill for 6-8mins, turning once until medium rare. Set aside for 2 mins to rest and cool slightly.

4 Thinly slice the beef and add to the salad bowl, mix it all together well.

5 Serve immediately and garnish with the sliced chilli.

LOVING LIQUEURS

L

iqueurs are widely acknowledged to have been produced by monks, during the 13th century. Derived from the Latin ‘liquifacere’, which means to liquify, liqueurs have evolved, over the centuries, to become very popular alcoholic beverages, today. Liqueurs can be flavoured with fruits, herbs and spices, and are usually quite sweet and regularly have a lower alcohol content than spirits, although some liqueurs can have an ABV which is high. Liqueurs are great by themselves, over ice and/or used in cocktails with fabulous results! Some liqueurs have recipes which are only known to a small number of people.

Numerous countries, globally, produce liqueurs, a good number of which are award-winning productions and for this quest I searched for a well-established company that has been producing an extremely popular liqueur for many years.

Licor 43 (Cuarenta y Tres) is a true taste of Spain and has a unique blend of forty-three ingredients.

The Zamora family, some seventy years ago, became the custodians of a secret recipe for this very fine liqueur. Renowned as Spain’s No.1 liqueur and for exporting too, Licor 43 is recognised globally and the popularity increases yearly.

Vanilla, Mediterranean citrus, spice, sugars and alcohol are amongst the ingredients for this yellow, MAY 2020

Well, here is my stress-free guide to wedding planning!

Firstly, I think it’s really important to take time to invest in researching the overall theme and the “look” that you dream of, whether it’s a wedding abroad, outdoors, at a hotel or in a village hall. Also, visualise the decor and styling that you love - a rustic look, an elegant, grand themed wedding etc, as this will make it easier when choosing what venues to view. You want the whole wedding and theme to blend seamlessly.

Agree on a sensible budget. Be sensible when it comes to your wedding budget – only spend what you can afford. You can have an amazing wedding, whatever your budget … trust me!

Decide whether you want a civil or religious wedding ceremony. This can shape your choice of venue – you could go to a wedding venue with a church nearby, or a venue that is licensed to hold a civil ceremony.

View and book your venue. Start looking for your venue when you have an idea of how much you have to spend, how many guests you want and what kind of ceremony you’ll be having. Altruism is a new party experience coming to the Fenland and surrounding areas - wanting to give back to the community and charities through the love of house music and the kindness of people.

It is the brainchild of seven people who only met in January, but who shared the same passion and desire for all things house music. It just felt right from the start.

The whole venture ventu was born from a fundraising idea at The Sportsman pub, Chatteris. It began with a few nights out and festivals together. Chrissie and Harsh cooked up the idea of giving Chatteris something that they hadn’t seen before - to bring a big city-style party to the Fens, all in aid of helping Chrissie reach his target for “Whizz-Kidz” in the London Marathon.

Now, most people living in the area will know that the Fens isn’t known for its jumping nightlife, with only a few pubs floating around in the towns. So, the task of bringing together top DJs and big house sound, along with a vibe that would cater to all the taste buds of the audience, was going to be an uphill struggle.

The first task was assembling the DJs that would be able to give the night the sound they envisaged. After attending a few Glitterbox and Brighter Days events in Cambridge and London, it was clear what the event needed, music-wise. It was a long punt, but a post was published in a Facebook, Glitterbox Family Group, G explaining that a fundraiser was being planned, and that it was going to run as non-profit, so all proceeds raised would go to the charity.

The call was answered by five absolute superstars in their own right, each one of them buying into the idea of developing the music scene in the local area, throwing an event for 150 party-goers and raising money for an amazing cause. *We had Ian Brown, aka Loop Manoeuvres, part of the Hijack team who run successful nights in St Ives, who brought house bangers along with the sparkle and disco balls. *Glenn Burgess from Cambridge is hugely Bu experienced from playing at big parties and events all over the UK. Bringing the disco, soulful house and no disco vibe which he delivers in his monthly radio show, Inside-Soul . *Jay Wesley, who travelled from Norwich to deliver uplifting house, mixed with disco and house classics, which we still enjoy every week on his midweek radio show on Just Vibes Radio.

Schneider, who made the massive *Paul Schneide journey from Watford to spend the night with us, dropping party anthems with the extra special twist, giving us a vinyl-only set on the night. *Finally, coming to the party was Dan Green, G Troglodyte Disco, bringing his experience and knowledge of the music scene from London. He delivered big tunes from across the house genre.

You could say, “the rest is history”.

Within days, a Facebook group was established; anyone that didn’t know would have thought that everyone had known each other for years. There was track sharing, ideas of what makes an awesome party, talk of USBs, CDs and vinyl. But all of it was about pure love for music.

We managed to secure the services of our wonderful marketing girl, Holly. Fantastically talented, she designed our posters, social media streams and coverage on the night.

As if the stars hadn’t already aligned with al bringing everyone together, we were lucky to discover Russell who has a new business in town. Russell is the owner of Simply Music, and boy, are we lucky to have found him?! He offered to come on board with us and donated the rig and speakers for the night. there (or neighbouring) will Anyone that was the tell you that the sound, quality and lighting were amazing.

Then the idea of Altruism was born, bo (definition of altruism: ‘selfless concern for the well-being of others’). It fitted perfectly and, even though we are now heading into uncertain times, we have the goal of planning more parties to support both local and big charities in any way we can. From everyone on the Altruism team, we like to be to the point, so remember “MUSIC IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER”!

The date was set – Saturday March 7th; location The Sportsman; the sound system was prepped; the staff were incredibly accommodating; and the DJs were ready to guide people on a journey of musical bliss.

The event was set out for 150 tickets which were sold out and the place was buzzing from start to finish. Each DJ delivering an fr hour-long set before they ramped it up to an even higher level. Everyone returning to their day jobs on the Monday, wondering what’s next? Do we just leave it there - one good party, or do we have more to give?

The conversations floated around in the group; we didn’t do this for money or gain.

We all came together to help people with the love of music. We loved bouncing ideas off each other and piecing everything together.

So, everyone decided, we have something special here! We want to continue this journey of helping others and giving back. jou

There is no doubt that what is happening in the world right now is heartbreaking, scary and unpredictable. Those little people in our lives whose world has come crashing down; their schools have closed, their hobbies and clubs have been put on hold and their routines have been flipped upside down. It is now that they need us, adults, more than ever.

But what is important is that everyone's journey will be different, and everyone's journey will be the right one for them. backg My background is Primary school teaching, and now a Forest School leader. I was a teacher in a specialist autism school for many years, but now I have escaped the classroom and I run the Forest School, alongside running my own business too, FIreflies Forest School. I believe most skills, concepts and understanding can usually be learnt more lea naturally and organically outdoors. Allowing a child to guide their learning is one of the most important opportunities I believe we can give a child.

As parents, we have all got a marathon ahead of us over the coming months and will need to find a new “normal”. Whilst all marathons are 26.2 miles long, the way each person runs their marathon is unique, the experience is unpredictable, their training plans are all individual and everyone's story is their own. Yet no one's marathon is wrong or less influential than another, just a different journey. What we parents have to decide over the coming weeks and months is just how we will reach the end of our marathon.

Some parents may have designed amazingly detailed and structured timetables which they will follow to the minute, others may try to teach creatively through crafts and more child-led learning, some families will use this time to let their children delve into their interests; maybe in something they don't usually get the chance to, whilst others will just aim to get through the day, with fed and watered children who haven’t caused quite as much havoc in the house as yesterday!

Most National Curriculum subjects can all be enhanced and taught outdoors and through their interests, without needing any worksheets or computer programs. As a Forest School leader, I prioritise giving the children opportunities to learn independence, resilience, confidence and a variety of skills fi lighting, knots and natural such as carving, fire art.

There is an abundance of amazing online websites that are offering free subscriptions at the moment, along with many fantastic Facebook pages and groups full of parents sharing ideas, many personal trainers doing online PE live videos, zoos doing live tours and much more!

Along with the obvious physical health benefits, it is important for children’s mental and emotional wellbeing that they can move around, ‘let off steam’ and express their natural vitality through play. Outdoor play in open space – within the public health parameters – I feel is just as essential or even mo more important than the National Curriculum right now.

Howeve However, play is such a wonderful thing and really shouldn't be underestimated – remember, they are never “just playing”.

I'm trying to do as much outside as I can (while I can!)...making bird feeders, bug hunts, learning new skills such as whittling and sawing, making art with natural materials, den building, mud play, nature data collections which can then be used to draw graphs and cover maths objectives, write poems about ga the garden and what the children can spot, learning and most of all … PLAY. Our children have such busy timetables with school, clubs and hobbies, so when do they usually get this amount of time to immerse themselves in child-led play?

The current government guidance around self-isolating, shielding and social distancing must be adhered to; however, we can still include ‘going for a walk outdoors if you stay more than two metres from others’, and I was pleased to hear the Chief Medical Officer’s recent remark, that “it is important that child children still exercise, enjoy themselves and play outside”.

Crucially, the play gives children a taste of being in control, of having some choice in their everyday lives. Playing gives them space and time to reconcile themselves to – and make sense of – an uncertain world, especially needed at times like this! On top of this, through playing, children are subconsciously exploring their powerful powe emotional responses to what is happening around them.

Space and opportunity to play is essential for children’s mental and emotional wellbeing, social connectedness and resilience. Of course, children can still enjoy play indoors; and there are lots of websites and social media pages for resources and suggestions from play practitioners on how best to support indoor play.

Open-ended play activities: - Den-building in nearby green space, or the home or garden (could go on for weeks).

- Chalking on the pavement.

- Junk modelling (eg the infinite possibilities of the cardboard box).

- Dressing-up.

- Preparing and putting on shows.

- Weird or re-worked sports (one-legged table tennis, blindfold cricket, indoor boules). whe the rules can be changed - Silly games where at any time, by anyone, but the change has to be made before the next move is made.

- Inspiration from nature and the elements: bug hunts, cloud watching.

- Painting and hiding rocks in homes and gardens, or parks or public spaces. adventu - Making up stories and adventures using action figures and favourite toy animals.

- Turning household objects into characters.

- Take-it-in-turns storytelling.

Policy For Play recently wrote an article about how the current pandemic could potentially limit or impact on play. We all know that children need and benefit from time and space outside. Healthy regular exercise is as vital for them as it is for adults. Public Health England (2018) identifies that ‘ensuring all child children are as active as possible throughout childhood is important for population health … this activity can include all forms of active play’.

Just a little advice for parents to remain sane, whilst also ensuring your children are continuing to learn and be happy: - Try to follow the children’s lead and stay in touch with their levels of interest and engagement.

- Don’t be afraid to step back and watch, and just let them get on with it. Being able to take a back seat or even dip out altogether can be a win-win.

This may go against the grain of ‘keeping children occupied’ with structured activities, learning support etc. As outdoor learning expert and ex-head teacher Juliet Robertson said on Twitter, “it requires a different way of thinking and being as a family.” However, we are not saying it is ‘free play or the highway’.

The is time and space for both.

There But just remember, this is YOUR marathon, however, your family chooses to get through this challenge is unique to you and try not to compare your journey to others, what works for you is right for YOU. It is much easier for a teacher to get the children on track with learning goals and the National Curriculum if their mental health is healthy. Just don't forget fo to let them have extended periods to just “be” and play.
