Welcome to Your January Issue.

At the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2019 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa appearing here and there, the carols and all the end-of term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of year.

The last few weeks have been particularly special for me. Our beautiful (canine!) baby George was one year old on November 27th, whilst two days later, our youngest “beautiful baby”, Ed, turned eighteen. Watch out world !!!

As we start a new decade with this month, I hope our readers love our new front cover, along with a new “kids page”, and we all look forward to even more exciting articles in 2020. In the meantime, I wish you a Happy New Year and may it bring peace, happiness and good health to everyone.

Valuing the Input of Volunteers A string of events has been staged in Wisbech to mark the birth of a celebrated social reformer whose life story began in the town. The keynote address during a commemoration day at Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House at 7 South Brink was given by Mr. James Strang, former President of the Chartered Institute of Housing and current Chief Executive of Parkhead Housing Association in Glasgow. It was titled ‘Housing in history: learning from Octavia Hill’.

A plaque to Nevil Folkard, a defender of heritage who saved the house on the South Brink where Octavia Hill, a co-founder of the National Trust was born, was unveiled in Heroes’ Arcade in the museum’s garden by Wisbech Mayor, Councillor Michael Hill.

In commemoration of the life and work of Octavia Hill in words and music staged at the town’s St Peter’s Church, the theme was volunteerism and the event was led by a licensed lay minister, Mr. Keith Aplin, and Mr. Peter Clayton, Chairman of the Octavia Hill Birthplace Museum Trust.

Members of the Wisbech detachment of the Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force, part of a national organization founded by the town’s most famous daughter, demonstrated the transformative

power of a little discipline in the life of a young person.

The Clarkson Singers, who hold their weekly rehearsals at the Birthplace House, performed songs

by Handel and E. MacDowell and the Clarkson Voices sang ‘Bluebird’, by C.V. Stanford, at the occasion, which was centred on Charles Kingsley’s stirring message: “Do noble things, not dream them all day long.”

Mr. Clayton said, “Once again, we have celebrated Octavia’s vital contribution. This year, in particular, we have focused on the role of volunteerism exemplified by the community work done nationwide by the 40,000 army cadets around the country, who by now will all know about Octavia Hill and the part she played in their foundation.”

The FMCA Warms Things Up When The Heating Breaks Down!

The FMCA (Fenland Music Centre Association), would like to warmly thank the generous support shown by the audience, at our annual Christmas Concert held on December 7th. A impressive £574 was raised on the night, every penny of which, will help our volunteers continue to bring music and educational opportunities to the local community. A packed St. Peter’s Church in March saw the FMCA put on one of their best performances to date.

Conductors, Ceri Griffin and Beth Letts, created the perfect festive atmosphere with their choice of repertoire that was performed by no less than three orchestras, a concert band, a swing band and string, wind and recorder ensembles.

A spokesman for FMCA said, “A well-attended Christmas Concert is vital to our charity and it is 4

heart-warming to see such generous support shown each year for our concerts - so heart-warming in fact, that nobody hardly noticed the fact that the boiler had decided to give up the ghost and join three other well-known festive spirits - Scrooge certainly would have felt at home tonight!”

JANUARY Gardening Tips Now that the rush of Christmas is over, and you have had your fill of the home-grown sprouts, it is time to take stock of last year’s triumphs and failures. You could now spend time planning a crop rotation to get the best out of your plot. You could work on a three or five-year crop rotation which prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop continually, taking the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases becoming established and then finding them very difficult to eradicate.

The three-year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots –leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop.

Year 2: Brassicas – are nitrogen-hungry, grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soilborne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay.

Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen, so it is good to grow them after brassicas where the nitrogen content has been depleted.

And, if you have a very large plot, why not try a five-year rotation?

Year 1: Brassicas.

Year 2: Peas and beans.

Year 3: Potatoes and fruiting vegetables.

Year 4: The onion family.

Year 5: Root and stem vegetables.

There are still one or two jobs that you can be doing to maintain the plot and make the best of your remaining crops: • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down.

• Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds.

• At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February?

• It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings.

• Finally, at the end of the month seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting.

The Butterfly Hospice Charity Store at The Horsefair Shopping Centre A wonderful new charity store has recently opened in Wisbech. All proceeds from the shop help the Butterfly Hospice whose patients have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. The role of the hospice is to provide palliative care and holistic support to patients and their families; patients come for respite, system control and end-of-life care.

Retail Operations Manager, Clair Doughty, said, “We needed a new concept for this shop, so I came up with the idea of a 50p store – yes, everything in the store is 50p! We currently stock clothing, soft furnishings, bric-a-brac, books, records and anything that people are bringing into the shop to donate.

Some of the clothing may need washing or may have a button missing but some of the clothing is brand new with tags on, so we cater for all. Some people are coming in buying items for a party, or we even have people buying for the homeless, so we feel like we are helping the local community.

We have been amazed by the number of donations that the local people have been bringing into the store. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers who work so hard in the store and a heartfelt thanks also goes to all our customers and the community who have kindly donated to our store.”

The store is currently looking for local volunteers to help in the shop, either sorting donations, hanging

clothing or serving customers. If you could spare a couple of hours a week and would like to meet new people, then please call Clair Doughty on 01205 311222 or e-mail clair.doughty@butterflyhospice.org.uk. The store is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Peterborough Cathedral to Host Burns Night Supper Anyone with Scottish connections, or who is a fan of Scotland and the Scottish bard, ‘Rabbie’ Burns, may like to know that Peterborough Cathedral is hosting a Burns Night Supper on Saturday January 18th, 2020.

The Supper, complete with the traditional piper and recitations, will be held in the evocative setting of the Cathedral’s North Transept and will include a ceilidh with a caller and live music from the band, Hannibal’s Heroes.

Guests are invited to wear a kilt, or something tartan as part of their outfit. With a three-course meal and whisky toasts included alongside the ceilidh, this promises to be an evening to remember, and it starts at 7.00pm.

Why not visit the Fenland Family History Society researchers to find out what your ancestors did for a living? You will find them in Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of the month, from 10am to 12 noon. They are also in the restaurant at the Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay on the second Monday of each month, from 11am to 2.30pm.

A Heartfelt Message of Thanks from NGNPUK NGNPUK (the “No Gain, No Pain U.K!” charity) would like to say a huge, “THANK YOU” so much to everyone who came to support the Early Bird Christmas Fayre on Sunday November 3rd at Eastrea. Also a massive “THANK YOU” to everyone who donated a cake, chocolate orange, raffle prize; everyone that knitted a chocolate orange cover or two; or made something lovely to sell on our stall; and finally, all of the stallholders for bringing their assortment of gifts and goodies.

A big “THANK YOU” goes to Spitfire Avian Pest Control who came along with Phoenix the Harris Hawk and Tyke the Indian Eagle Rock Owl, (they certainly were beautiful and very popular) and of course to Santa and his elf who left with all those important letters to read!

We hope all who came had a lovely time and enjoyed themselves. Together we all raised an amazing £1383.77, which is enough for another machine to be used in our communities.

Contactless Payment Machines Now at Council Service Centres and Community Hubs Fenland residents will now be able to pay for their council services using contactless payments.

Fenland District Council have installed new contactless payment machines in its Customer Services Centres and Community Hubs from midDecember. The machines will enable contactless payment as well as card and cash options for users.

A Fenland District Council spokesman said, “As a Council, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the service we offer to our residents.

Installing new, modern machines that offer contactless will make payments easier, faster and more secure. Most of our residents pay their bills via Direct Debit or online through our website, but with more and more people choosing a cashless lifestyle, we will be pleased to offer more options when paying by card in our centres and hubs.”

Take Care with Push Notifications!

- Advice from Diamond Byte Solutions

Most browsers, websites and apps use push notifications as a form of marketing and, in general, these allow ‘Website Notifications’ and are fine, as they simply let web developers notify users when new content is posted.

However, over the last few years, criminals have been misusing these notifications to hide malware, a tactic known as “malvertising”. Malvertising works when users open a website with ‘Website Notifications’ and are faced with a pop-up asking for permission to display notifications. If users agree, their choices are saved in browser options, and criminals are then able to continually feed them with unwanted ads.

These intrusive ads can, in turn, lead to malicious websites and can even run scripts that install malware.

Some sites ask to “enable notifications, otherwise content will not be displayed”. When the user declines, the pop-up keeps appearing until the website is closed.

These notifications to display content are merely trying to trick users into clicking “Allow”.

Even with an ad-blocker installed, malicious push notifications can still get through, as I have seen on many of my customers’ computers.

Typical signs that the push notifications you are getting are malicious are: • Ads appear in places where they shouldn’t, e.g. your desktop, even when the browser is closed.

• The browser home page changes without your permission.

• Websites you used to visit are now not displaying properly, or you are redirected to another address.

• You get pop-ups that advertise fake software or updates, or warnings that you are infected, followed by prompts to install a specific clean-up tool (DON’T!)

• Apps and programs are installed on your PC that you don’t remember installing.

Don’t worry, they can be removed: Google Chrome - go to Settings, click on the Advanced arrow to reveal Privacy and security, go to Site settings then Notifications to see the list of websites you allowed sending you push notifications, as well as the list of websites you blocked push notifications from. If you see one you don’t remember approving or wish to take back permission from, click the vertical dots bar for that domain and select ‘Remove’.

Mozilla Firefox – Click on Options from the drop-down menu, then choose Privacy and Security from the list at the top left. Scroll down until you come to Permissions, click on the Settings button for notifications and you can see all the websites you allowed pop-ups from.

Finish by scanning your PC and cleaning it up with professional anti-malware software. To prevent infections with malicious push notifications, be cautious.

Keep the list of websites from which you accept push notifications short and NEVER go online unprotected.

Your recyclables are delivered to the Waterbeach Waste Management Park and the ‘Materials Recycling Facility’ at the site separates out the paper, card, plastics and cans ready for reprocessing into new products.

When your rubbish is collected, it is delivered to the Waterbeach Waste Management Park in Cambridgeshire.

Your rubbish is put through a ‘Mechanical and Biological Treatment’ process which separates out recyclable materials that may have been missed and reduces the organic fraction of the waste through a composting process before it is landfilled.

REUSE: A lot of things can be reused – take a refillable bottle or cup with you, re-cover an old chair, sell unwanted clothes or give them to charity!

Your food and garden waste is composted at the Waterbeach Waste Management Park to create a soil improver which residents can collect for free from the site. It is a rich source of nutrients and is used by gardeners, allotment holders, landscapers and farmers.

Wines Worth Locating BOLLLICINE

B

olllicine is derived from the word bollicine (bubbles). The vines are located to the eastern side of Veneto in north-eastern Italy. Bolllicine came about because of a game played in a garden, where bottles of sparkling wine were opened, with the corks propelled across the garden. The distance travelled by each cork was measured. The furthest distance was marked with a small flag with two ‘L’s. Chardonnay Riesling di Bolllicine then beat the ‘record’ and was noted with three ‘L’s on the flag. Other Bolllicine products followed, with unique designs and high quality, defined by organic contact and methods of production.

Violè – Spumante Rosato Extra Dry (Grapes: Pinot Nero) has an attractive, light violet colour.

The aroma is inviting, certainly. Aged for at least thirty-six months, this produces a full-bodied, floral flavour, which is acquired during the ageing process. The Green-Spumante Extra Dry Millesimato (Grapes: Pinot Blanco, Verduzzo) has sixty days’ fermentation, using the Charmat Method. A very good bouquet, with fruits, entices to the splendid, fresh mouthfeel and palate sensation, beyond. This is an elegant wine that constantly adorns many dining tables.

Prosecco-DOC Extra Dry (Grapes: Glera) is sparkling and fresh. An all-round, everyday pleaser, this wine needs little introduction. It has a fruity bouquet, good tropical fruit flavours and is wonderful as an apéritif. It is perfect to pair with fish or seafood

cuisine. Chardonnay & Riesling – Spumante Brut Millesimato (Grapes: Chardonnay, Riesling Renano) is a fruit-inspired production that has one hundred and eighty days of fermentation using the Charmat Method. Again, another often-selected wine and very popular for events and occasions.

These sparkling wines are great as apéritifs, as well as being fabulous accompaniments to many dishes of cuisine, including, fish, seafood and white meats.

The bottles can be ‘personalised’ – so, for a special occasion or event, that is a grand idea.

Olive oils are also available, where the olives come from Sicilian olive groves. Intense colours greet the eye and superb fragrances follow. The harvesting of high-quality olives is carried out by hand. Splendid, aged vinegar is also available and, with the olive oils and wines, is most worthwhile locating. Still a part of the local community Moving to a care home doesn’t stop our residents from being involved in their local communities.

James, a former member of the local Wisbech and District Motorcycle Club for over twenty years, could no longer go to the club so they came to him – his wife Edie and the club surprised James with a visit where they could admire an assortment of classic super-bikes and vintage motorcycles.

Our residents also like to remain involved in themed events or fundraising activities, like a recent bake sale they had for Children in Need. The residents helped prepare, bake and decorate the tasty treats on offer.

A favourite of our residents are the regular visits they receive from organisations such as ZooLab, who bring a variety of animals for our residents to interact with.

Animal therapy is proven to have benefits for many older people, whether they live with dementia or not.

For those living with dementia, the different textures and sensations of fur, feathers and scales are an excellent stimulant, and for those who aren’t living with dementia, having a furry friend visit – sometimes to their very bedroom – is an experience which is greatly enjoyed.

When is a Court of Protection Health and Welfare Order Needed? BY HOLLY WEBB

An important part of being fully prepared for later life is by making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This will nominate a trusted friend or family member who will make important decisions on your behalf in the eventuality that you no longer have the capacity to make these decisions yourself.

Before you make an LPA, you need to demonstrate that you have the capacity to do so. If you need to appoint an attorney but are deemed to no longer have capacity, you will not be able to do so. Some people do find themselves in the position where they no longer have capacity and have not appointed anyone to make health and welfare decisions on their behalf.

In these circumstances, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 does allow family members and other carers to make decisions relating to a person’s care and treatment. Family members and carers do not need permission from the court to help someone to wash, dress or feed themselves. It is also permissible to buy shopping and necessary goods for them using their own money and arrange homecare, services and repairs or maintenance.

Those caring for a person who lacks capacity are also allowed to carry out diagnostic tests to identify an illness, give medication and arrange professional medical treatment. They are also allowed to arrange care in an emergency. There are limits to this. The person must be reasonably deemed to lack capacity to make the decision themselves and it is vitally important that any decisions made, or actions taken are in that person’s best interests.

If the decision is about where the person is to permanently reside or if there is a disagreement over what is considered to be in the person’s best

interests then an application will have to be made to the Court of Protection who will make a one-off decision on the matter.

As a rule, the Court of Protection is unlikely to appoint a health and welfare deputy unless ongoing welfare decisions will need to be made.

Deputies are more likely to be appointed in cases where a person suffers from a progressive illness or profound learning disabilities and will require a series of medical decisions to be made on their behalf over a period of time.

If the Court of Protection does appoint a deputy, there is no guarantee that they would have been the first choice of the person needing decisions made on their behalf. While you have the capacity to do so, it is very important to make a Lasting Power of Attorney to put you in control of who will manage your affairs in the event that you are no longer able to.

Charities Must Step Up Financial Security As accountants and auditors, we have a wide range of clients including local and international charities. In Wisbech and district there are the familiar high street names but among the hundreds listed there are many smaller bodies supporting local people and causes.

Writes Keith Day. It is important for charities to meet prescribed levels of assurance over their financial statements from this year on but the Charity Commission is calling on charities to take steps to prevent fraud after fresh research shows many are not protecting themselves against biggest risks.

According to the Commission’s research, their largest ever focused on fraud and cybercrime, over half of charities affected by fraud during the past two years knew the perpetrator. It suggests that over a third of those committing fraud were the charity’s own staff members. Trustees and volunteers together were responsible for 28% and beneficiaries were identified in 13% of known frauds.

The study shows that charities are not always recognising how vulnerable their own organisations are and are not consistently putting basic checks and balances in place.

The Commission is concerned about this gap between awareness and practical action because it poses a threat to a charity’s ability to deliver for beneficiaries if donors cannot be confident in charities’ stewardship of the money it receives. It recommends simple steps around basic financial controls; tightening the oversight or control of financial arrangements; encouraging staff, volunteers and trustees to speak out when they see something they feel uncomfortable about.

The new research indicates that charities are increasingly aware of the risks of cybercrime, which is a term that describes crimes that exploit or attack a charity’s digital presence, data or systems, such as phishing and malicious emails, hacking and extortion.

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear (Unusual, fascinating and sometimes amusing, by the author of “Wisbech’s Secret Princess,” Chris Donald.)

For thousands of years, man has enjoyed a drink or two. But there have been many occasions where people have had too much and ended the worse for it. And so it is in the Fens that there have been tales told, some humorous, some sad.

One of the most important families in Wisbech were the Peckovers, who were well-known as Quakers, a Christian religion. If we go back to the time of Jesus, it is recorded that he, together with his mother and disciples were invited to a wedding and, because they had run out of wine, Jesus turned water into wine for them. It is estimated that he made the equivalent of about 1,000 bottles of wine! That was some wedding! It is a fact that Quakers can be teetotal if they want, but it is perfectly ok for them to drink, but of course, in moderation. Nowadays, the j anua ry 2020

Wisbech Quakers support the wonderful work done by Al-Anon.

The last male Peckover, Alexander, had three girls and thus, after his death, the Peckover line died out. Much has been made of the fact that Alexander Peckover’s three daughters were teetotal.

There are two stories about the Peckovers and alcohol. Alexander Peckover had an extensive wine cellar which had been built up over the years since John Peckover originally bought the house. After Alexander’s death, all the drink was disposed of by the three sisters, and tales are made of what they did. Some say it was poured down the drain whilst others say it was poured over the orangery.

The second story is about a pub at the top Barton Road called the Cross Keys which was bought by Alexandrina Peckover in 1927 who

changed its use to residential use.

They used it as a dwelling for their coachman who worked at Sibald’s Holme, just around the corner.

But rumours can easily spread, and it was soon thought that the Peckovers had bought a pub and made it into a dwelling house so that people didn’t have so many places to get drunk in.

In 1816, Mr Curwin, a leading solicitor and Town Clerk of Wisbech, spent the Saturday evening drinking at the Vine.

Apparently, he was very proud of how he looked, especially his pigtail. Alas, after consuming too much punch he lost consciousness only to wake up later to find his beloved pigtail had been cut off. Even after offering a reward for information, nothing was ever found leaving Mr. Curwin very unhappy. Did he learn his lesson?

The Turner Prize Competition 2019

by Aldo Ierubino The annual competition for the Turner prize for contemporary art has recently been awarded and, unusually, it was shared by all four shortlisted candidates who had implored the jury to award it as a cooperative prize. Each year, this competition throws up the usual arguments about the nature of contemporary art and the controversial nature of the shortlisted works. Who can forget Tracey Emin’s “My Bed” (the infamous unmade and somewhat soiled bed installation) exhibited in 1999, or Damien Hirst’s “Mother and Child Divided” (the shocking cow and calf bisected and preserved in four tanks of formaldehyde), the winner in 1995? Each of these works shocked public opinion, causing many to question the tenuous link back to JMW Turner, the namesake for the prize, and to wonder whether or not the art establishment had any idea about what constitutes art!

This year, the four shortlisted artists: Oscar Murillo, Tai Shani, Helen Cammock, and Lawrence Abu Hamdan, are equally as controversial. However, we should bear in mind that contemporary art is always controversial, testing, and troubling. (Even Turner himself

was criticised with some of his works being considered ‘monstrosities’ by leading critics of the day.) People always want more of what they are used to, whereas the role of contemporary art is to challenge those expectations. The winners of the Turner prize challenge our expectations with works that defy easy categorisation or interpretation, and which break the boundaries between traditional media, often intermixing them or using them in ways that are novel.

Oscar Murillo’s work is in the form of an unstretched, collagedtogether, painted canvas made up of fragments, which engages with issues of the artistic tradition of painting, biography, working conditions, and performance.

On the other hand, Tai Shani, in a work that has taken five years to complete, presents a kind of tableaux-vivant installation which represents the city of women with twelve characters exploring issues of femininity.

The work of Helen Cammock ranges across film, photography, print, text and performance, to produce a moving image work entitled the ‘Long Note’ which

explores the role of women in the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland in 1968.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan employs audio-visual installations, lecture performances, audio archives, research, photography and text, in order to create works that engage with spatial experiences.

His ‘Aluminium Step Ladder’ is based on the experiences of prisoners in Saydnaya prison near Damascus in Syria who were regularly blindfolded and rarely left their cells and as a consequence they did not know what their jailers or the jail looked like; instead their experience was dominated by the sounds of the prison such as the opening and closing of cell doors. Hamdan has researched the sounds and re-created the experience of that spatial/aural context.

History

Dr William Tubbs - Nineteenth Century Medical Practitioner by Eric Somerville, Wisbech Society Dr Tubbs practised medicine locally in the nineteenth century, first in Parson Drove, and then in Outwell and Upwell, where he served as medical officer to the Wisbech [Poor Law] Union. He had an enquiring, scientific mind and is credited with resuscitating a child poisoned with opium using a battery to deliver an electric shock, long before cardiac defibrillators were invented.

However, his passion was mesmerism.

The term ‘mesmerism’ is derived from Dr Franz Mesmer, an eighteenth century Austrian physician, who believed ill-health was due to a disturbance in the flow of an invisible magnetic fluid within the body and that cure involved correcting this flow with the use of magnets. However, he also employed eye fixation and hand movements, and a number of his patients would lapse into a deep sleep and be insensitive to pain. On waking, they were often cured of their afflictions and Mesmer, wrongly, attributed this to the effects of the magnets. In fact, he had stumbled upon

what today we would call hypnosis.

Mesmer was accused of quackery.

Early in the nineteenth century the practice of inducing trances to treat patients was revived in London where a hospital specialising in mesmerism was opened by Dr John Elliotson.

He also edited a journal called The Zoist which promoted the benefits of mesmerism. This was published quarterly between 1843 and 1856, and Dr Tubbs was a regular contributor, filing case reports of his own use of the technique. On occasions, Tubbs would give demonstrations, to which he would invite witnesses to authenticate his practice. Two such events recorded in The Zoist involved a difficult dental extraction and a mastectomy, both performed painlessly under mesmeric anaesthesia. While the dental extraction had involved the use of great force, it was the mastectomy in 1853 that attracted the greater attention.

Dr Tubbs performed this operation on a thirty-year-old Upwell woman in the Mesmeric Infirmary in London, witnessed by members of the hospital management committee. There is no

record of why the breast required removal but we can assume it was either a tumour or an abscess.

On the day of the operation, with his patient seated in a chair before him, Tubbs induced sleep and then insensibility to pain, by holding both her hands and fixing her in the eye. He then opened her dress and proceeded to make deep, slow elliptical incisions around the breast, eventually removing it with little blood loss. Throughout the process, her breathing remained regular and her expression suggested that she was simply asleep; she made no movement whatsoever, sitting motionless throughout the procedure.

The operation complete, he woke her in less than a minute. She professed to have felt nothing.

Dr Tubbs died in 1870 and the British Medical Journal, in an obituary, stated he was buried in Upwell and ‘upward of a thousand …attended him to the grave.’

The story does not quite end there. The Wisbech and Fenland Museum hold a complete set of The Zoist journals, bequeathed in the will of the Rev Chauncey Hare Townshend, who was also fascinated by mesmerism.
