Back to School Already?

Time for New Shoes!

Well, it’s that time of year again to start thinking about shoes to go back to school!

At Zebedee Shoes, we spend months prior to this choosing the right quality and style of shoes that fit well, are comfortable and durable enough to handle the day-today wear-and-tear, as our children put them through their paces.

Remember also that your child’s feet are in their school shoes five days a week, so the more natural materials that are used the better, as feet can breathe and stay healthy.

It can also be very helpful when you come for a fitting to either bring your old school shoes or know what size you have been wearing, because when we size you up we can then tell how much growth has been going on, and we can fit appropriately for the next school year.

We cater for children from Reception right up to adult size 12, providing a range of stock, from trendy through to traditional and more formal styles for the older senior school students. We also stock shoes to fit orthotics.

All of our staff are trained to a very high standard of fitting, so if a fit isn’t right, we won’t let it go out of the shop. We strive to get the best fit for your child and if we don’t have the right shoes in stock, we can normally order them for you within a few days.

CHANGES TO DISTRIBUTION

It is our intention to continue to deliver the magazine around the central part of the town and the town centre itself every month, but in some of the outer areas of the town we will begin to deliver bi-monthly.

This means that some areas of the town that currently receive the magazine each month will now receive the magazine every other month; however, areas of the town that do not currently receive the magazine will now receive the magazine, also every other month. We feel that this is a positive move for the foreseeable future, as we will increase our circulation to a much wider audience by around 25%.

Staying Safe in Summer Summer time is here and so are sunny days spent outdoors, splashing in pools and relaxing on the beach. However, summer can cause some extra wear and tear on the body. Most people usually protect themselves by using sunscreen and sunglasses. But many will forget to look after two of the most important and neglected parts of the body – their feet.

Here are some tips on how to protect yourself, especially your feet, from salt water, sand, and other summer scares: • Remember to apply sunscreen to feet, especially the tops and fronts of ankles. Don't forget to reapply regularly if you're in and out of the water!

• When out of the water, wash and dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, and apply an anti-fungal medication on itchy skin.

Clean, dry feet resist disease.

• Pass up sharing towels to avoid developing athlete's foot and other diseases that can easily be spread.

• Take special care of toenails, which are especially vulnerable around damp areas. Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to infection so see your podiatrist at the first sign of discoloration or infection.

• To avoid toe and ankle injuries, wear shoes that are specific to the activity or sport you're participating in. Never play Frisbee in sandals and be sure to wear boots when working outside and mowing the lawn.

• Give yourself plenty of time to break in new shoes before going on trips where you'll be doing lots of walking. And when trying on new shoes, make sure you have on the same socks you plan on wearing with them.

• When on holiday abroad and in the ocean, be cautious of jellyfish that often bite at feet

and ankles and sharp coral that can cut the undersides of feet. Keeping sandals or water shoes on at all times is a good idea to prevent stings, cuts, and other injuries.

• Watch out for prickly sea urchin spines when taking walks on the beach. Avoid walking barefoot; wear an old pair of running shoes or flip-flops to protect yourself from jagged rocks, shells, spines, and debris that could float ashore.

• And most importantly, swim, walk, and enjoy the summer!! Walking is the best form of exercise for your feet and swimming is a great alternative for those suffering from tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, which can make other types of exercise painful.

Art at the Sessions House, Wisbech, 1843

by Bridget Holmes, Historian In August 1843, as part of the fund-raising events held to raise money for a chapel in the new church cemetery (Tillery Field), which had been opened in 1841, an exhibition of “Ancient and Modern Pictures” was held in the Sessions House, South Brink. The main fund-raising event was a Grand Bazaar held in the Vicarage Gardens, (St Peter’s car park) which lasted for over four days, along with other events which included a church service and the laying of the foundation stone of the new chapel; a concert; special opening of the museum (Old Market), a ball at the Rose and Crown for the gentry and dancing on the Market Place for the general public, and the whole event was completed with a fireworks display.

The Sessions House for the Isle of Ely, built in 1808 and designed by Thomas West, a local architect, was transformed into a gallery for the event; the entry fee was one shilling. The catalogue which cost sixpence lists nearly two hundred pictures which were on show.

They included a number of ‘Old Masters’, some belonging to local influential gentlemen, who also loaned works of less important artists and early 19th century artists; along with works on loan from London gallery owners. This was clearly an important event requiring a great deal of organisation, all of which suggests the ‘sophistication’ and ‘philanthropism’ of the Wisbech elite who were prepared to loan works, pay the entrance fee to view the works, and contribute to raising funds.

The catalogue listing Old Master works on display in the exhibition included Sir Peter Lely’s portrait of Nell

Gwynn, a version of Sir Anthony Van Dyke’s Time Clipping the Wings of Cupid, William Hogarth’s A Tea Party, and Sir G Kneller’s Portrait of Sir Christopher Wren. Works by early 19th century artists included White Herrings by Turner, May by W Etty RA, Welsh Bicknor Church on the Wye by F W Watts, and Old Mortality by Sir D Wilke. One work on show, with which we are familiar was the portrait of Thomas Clarkson which was owned by the Wisbech Corporation and still hangs in the Town Hall today.

The Cambridgeshire Independent Newspaper began its report by saying it was slightly disappointing that more people had not attended; the reason could be ‘they have scarcely an opportunity of witnessing good specimens of either. Statues and pictures cannot be cut down like our poets and philosophers into pennyworths for weekly circulation among the labouring population’. In spite of this comment, over six hundred people did attend the exhibition.

This appears to have been the first of several major art exhibitions that were held in the town over the succeeding years and this begs the question: could such an event be held today?

The Grizzly Death of King Charles II

We are sometimes unhappy with doctors and the NHS, but we could be far, far worse off. Having just recently been whisked off to King’s Lynn Hospital A & E at midnight in an ambulance, I can say there are marvellous people in the NHS service, to whom I would like to say a very big thank you.

generation. These were to get rid of bad fluids or toxic humours in the body. His bedchamber was surrounded by physicians, family members and state officials.

But, over three hundred years ago, in 1685, King Charles II had a minor stroke and an epileptic fit. It was a kind of stroke that, if you suffered one today, you would have a good chance of not only surviving but also a decent quality of life for a number of years.

The first fluid to get rid of was blood.

Thankfully, they didn’t take it all. They took a pint and then, just to be sure, they took an extra eight ounces. Then there was an emetic, forcing him to vomit violently thus getting rid of more fluid. After this, there were the strong laxatives to relieve the poor king of fluid from the other end, in other words, the evacuation of the bowels.

Remember, the king was the most important man in the country and he was attended to by the very best doctors in the country but, sadly, medicine was very different then to how we know it today. Medicine was based on ancient Greek beliefs which had been handed down from generation to

And all manner of potions were forced down the king’s throat. If this wasn’t enough, they shaved his head and applied intense scorching agents to his scalp. They put special plasters, made from pigeon droppings, onto the soles of his feet. Finally

they put red hot irons on his skin!

But, after a few days of this, his brother, James II, cleared the room, and the disguised figure of the priest, Father Huddleston, entered by a hidden door. He heard Charles’s confession and then gave him absolution.

Charles had finally become a Roman Catholic. He apologised to everybody for taking so long to die and added that he had suffered much more than they could imagine.

After four gruelling days the poor exhausted king, his body raw and aching with the burns and inflammation caused by his treatment, was given heart tonics, which did nothing.

He lapsed into a coma and died at noon on February 7th.

Medicine has certainly advanced so much in the ensuing centuries.

We do not hold a monthly meeting in August, as most of us are out and about researching our family history; you may see us trailing round graveyards looking for a grave inscription or taking a photo of the home of an ancestor to add that personal touch to our family records. SUMMER MEETINGS. Our June meeting was an outing to Wisbech Museum. Robert Bell gave a very good talk about the museum and its contents, and we were delighted when he then allowed us to browse

the wonderful collection of books and papers which he had laid out for us. At our July meeting we were entertained and educated in different ways of researching by several of our members telling about their own journey in family history.

EVENTS. We are busy planning future displays for various events in September, including Elgood’s Brewery Plant & Craft Fair on September 1st and the National Heritage Weekend on September 14th and 15th.

Essential Project Helps Young People with Everyday Items Fenland residents and businesses are being urged to support a new project by donating unused toiletries to young people who need them.

“Essentials by Sue” has been launched to provide toiletries, sanitary items and other essentials to young people from lower-income families who may struggle to afford them.

Items, such as shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel and bras can now be donated at locations across the district, to be distributed to schools, colleges and local foodbanks. The Fenland Community Safety Partnership launched the project at Cromwell Community College in Chatteris, which is one of the colleges involved.

Rosie Cooke, Fenland District Council’s Community Safety Projects Officer, who is coordinating the project, said: “Many of us take buying toiletries, sanitary items and underwear for granted.

However, there are some that struggle to get regular access to these everyday basics. Our fear is that a lack of these items not only causes discomfort but can lead to embarrassment and bullying by their peers. This can perpetuate a cycle of low self-esteem. In the worst cases, police have seen young people resorting to crime in order to try and get hold of these ‘essentials’.”

“Essentials by Sue” was originally founded in 2016

by Cambridgeshire Crime Reduction Officer, Sue Loaker, after two 12-year-old girls were caught shoplifting toiletries in Ely. Mrs. Loaker recognised the issue could be addressed by providing a foodbank-like facility for toiletries, with projects so far being set up in Huntingdon, Ramsey, and Ely. Councillor Susan Wallwork, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, said she was delighted to see the project launched in Fenland. She said: “Essentials by Sue is a fantastic project. Our young people deserve the dignity of having the right products for their needs; I have witnessed first-hand the humiliation when they don’t and it’s simply not fair on them. They don’t have to feel embarrassed about asking for everyday day essentials, and they can do so without being quizzed or judged.”

Booking Opens for ‘Gaia Earth’ Evening Viewings at Peterborough Cathedral Booking has now opened for evening tickets to see Luke Jerram’s ‘Gaia Earth’ artwork, which will be suspended under the central tower of Peterborough Cathedral from August 19th until September 15th.

The stunning seven metre artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface.

Lit from the inside, it will be seen to full effect, as darkness gradually falls in the Cathedral during the 6.30pm to 9.30pm opening times.

Gaia rotates once every four minutes, 360 times faster than our real planet, and it is accompanied by a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer, Dan Jones.

The evening viewings are on numerous selected dates during the exhibition and booking is essential via the Cathedral’s ticket site at www.ticketisland. co.uk/peterboroughcathedral. Tickets are £2 per person or £6 per family (2 adults, 2 children). One of the evenings, on Sunday 25th August, is a special Quiet Evening, for those who prefer to contemplate the beauty of the earth in silence, whilst on Wednesday 28th August, there will be a talk and film show from the One to One Development Trust about 900 Voices of the River Nene, focussing on Peterborough’s connections with the river.

Visitors can also take the opportunity, on some evenings, to go ‘To the Northern Hemisphere’ by climbing the steps to the upper level of the Cathedral and looking down on Gaia from above, taking photos or video if they wish. There will be a small additional charge for this, payable on the day.

Ancient Egyptian Activities for all the Family at Wisbech and Fenland Museum Some of the Victorian gentlemen who clubbed together to get Wisbech and Fenland Museum purpose-built in the 1840s were great travellers, and a splendid set of photographs showing early British tourists to Egypt are among the treasures in its summer exhibition “The Egyptians” throughout August. Adults and children alike will be fascinated to browse the galleries and find a mummified sacred cat and human hand, fragments of ancient painted coffin panels and burial jars used to store entrails. Entry to the museum is free.

For all those who enjoy doing more than look, there’s an amazing opportunity to don a virtual reality mask and step back into the Egypt of the Pharaohs and experience their tombs at first hand, every Thursday and Friday from August 8th to the 23rd. Just come into the museum and pay - each session costs £3.50.

activity days. Each day there’s a “Decipher the Hieroglyphics” challenge, and a Victorian Explorers trail to follow free of charge, and an artist to help them make something special to take home, for just £1 per session.

On August 28th, Rachel Simmonds, who runs the museum’s popular “Hey Clay” workshops, will help children make a clay scarab and a clay burial jar; and on August 15th, the museum’s own modelmaker Fred White will lead them in making their own mummy mask.

The free challenge and trail are available to children every day the museum is open in August, from Tuesday to Saturday. Also, every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 am to 3 pm, parents and grandparents can watch their children have Egyptian art fun, designing and decorating a burial jar, clay scarab or mummy mask – for £1 per child, per session.

New HUB Opens to Help Reduce Homelessness A new homeless support hub to help rough sleepers get off the streets has opened its doors in Fenland. The HUB has opened at Octavia View in Wisbech to provide specialist support and rapid assessment for homeless people, and those at risk of homelessness, across the district.

The multi-agency facility is run by homeless charity, the Ferry Project, and has been made possible thanks to £131,125 of government funding secured

by Fenland District Council. Ferry already provides specialist homelessness support to those offered accommodation at the Clarkson House hostel or emergency Night Shelter, but the new HUB will enable trained staff to provide the same support to anyone who needs it in Fenland. It will include help with finding accommodation, accessing medical services, managing debts and benefits, and support into employment and training, as well as help with food, washing facilities, clothing, and toiletries.

The main game-changer and an integral part of the bid put together by council staff was to recruit a mental health nurse. The nurse, who starts imminently, will be available to address complex needs, a service often lacking in homeless provision. Councillor Samantha Hoy, Fenland District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Tackling homelessness is more than just offering a bed for the night. It’s about supporting people, understanding their

circumstances and providing help so they can turn their lives around. The Ferry project will be working in the HUB with our housing staff, the NHS and other services to ensure everyone in Fenland, whether they are already living on the streets or in danger of being made homeless, has access to professional guidance and help with everyday things such as food, clothing and washing.”

“The funding we secured from the government’s Rough Sleeper Initiative will enable the HUB to run for an initial twelve month pilot, but we will need a further commitment from the government to run it beyond its first year and make a difference.”

Keith Smith, Founder and Director of the Ferry Project, said: “It is another great service to help some of the most vulnerable people in Fenland off the streets and into their own home. It demonstrates once again the excellent partnership working between Fenland District Council and local charities.” The HUB is currently open 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday, with plans to open seven days a week in the autumn.

In addition to securing the Rough Sleeper Initiative funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), the Council has successfully bid for two other homelessness grants from the MHCLG. It has received £58,000 to prioritise homelessness prevention activity, carry out further homelessness activities and fund work to reduce or eliminate the use of emergency “bed and breakfasts”, and a further £35,000 for a rough sleeper coordinator role for one year, to coordinate outcomes for rough sleepers and ensure services are ‘joined-up’ to maximise positive outcomes for vulnerable people.

The Sound of Music The Fenland Music Centre Association’s annual Summer Rotary Concert, kindly sponsored by the Rotary Club of March, once again exceeded all expectations, raising over £700 to continue their work with musicians of all ages and abilities, within the local community. A packed St. Peter’s Church, March, saw all of the FMCA’s eight orchestras, bands and ensembles, perform a dazzling array of well-known themes from the movies. Highlights included “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” from their Training Orchestra; a medley of hits from “The Greatest Showman”; and stunning renditions of “Skyfall” and “Mission Impossible” from their Concert Band.

A spokesman from the FMCA commented, “We are particularly proud and impressed by the emerging quality of the Swing Band. It has undergone several 20

Council Awarded Over £600,000 of Government Migration Funding Fenland District Council has successfully secured a further share of government funding aimed at supporting local areas facing pressures linked to recent migration. More than £600,000 has been received from the Controlling Migration Fund (CMF) after the Council submitted several strong bids to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The funding will help the Council and its partners to tackle migration issues from all angles, with projects focusing on enforcement, pastoral care, cohesion, and integration as well as research to enable to authority to prepare and adapt to future challenges. A total of £632,062 has been secured to advance and extend five existing CMF projects and get three new ones off the ground. They are: •

Private Sector Housing Enforcement – extending the ongoing success of the current CMF-funded project in Wisbech, additional funding will be used to address private rented sector issues in and around March, as well as to raise awareness of employers’ social responsibility across Fenland.

• Parallel Lives Project – extending the existing project with the Roma community, the most vulnerable migrant group across the East of England, funding will be used to provide public sector professionals with Roma-specific safeguarding training designed to enhance their knowledge of the community.

• Supporting Independence – helping the Rosmini Centre in Wisbech support growing numbers of people from settled communities with a new outreach service, while providing additional resources to support people from migrant communities through an existing Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) service.

Migrant Outreach Service: Complex Needs – extending the current CMF outreach service project, the new funding will pilot a specialist approach to supporting migrant rough sleepers with complex health needs, who require multi-disciplinary expertise and more one-to-one support.

Cohesive Communities Project – working in partnership with King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council, this new project will provide migrants with multi-lingual information and guidance to raise awareness of their rights and responsibilities in the UK.

•

Wisbech Emergency Night Shelter Expansion – previous CMF funding enabled the Night Shelter to expand by four beds, to fourteen beds, and employ two additional members of staff to support both local and migrant rough sleepers. The new funding will enable the increased level of support to be provided to new migrant communities coming to Wisbech. More than £280,000 of CMF funding was also secured to extend alcohol and drug support project in Wisbech and Peterborough, provided by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Public Health team.

Wellies in the Woods – an innovative, new project that uses outdoor play in community parks and green spaces to help build and develop cohesion and relationships across the town. Working with children’s centres, parents’ forums, community groups, local early years professionals and families, Wellies in the Woods will help families develop stronger relationships and create opportunities for wider engagement across different communities with added benefits of addressing language barriers, confidence,

Horsefair Hosts its Annual Summer Fun Day The annual Summer Fun Day will be taking place at The Horsefair Shopping Centre on Wednesday August 21st from 10 am – 2 pm and will offer a whole host of free activities. PORK AND PEACH KEBABS These are great on the BBQ but if the weather is not on your side, they're just as delicious in the grill!

Method

Ingredients Serves 4 500g lean pork fillet 2 peaches 1 lemon 2 tbsp clear honey 2 Little Gem lettuces 100g bag of watercress 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp Dijon mustard Pack of wooden skewers

• Soak eight wooden skewers in cold water for at least five minutes.

• Cut the pork into large cubes, then halve and stone the peaches and cut them into chunks.

• Grate the zest from half the lemon and squeeze out the juice. Reserve one tbsp of the juice, then mix the remainder with the zest and honey.

• Thread the pork and peach slices alternately onto the skewers.

• Brush all over with the honey and lemon mix, then grill or barbecue for 10-12 mins, turning regularly, until cooked.

• Separate the lettuce leaves and mix with the watercress.

• Whisk the reserved lemon juice with the olive oil, mustard and a little seasoning.

• Toss with the salad leaves and serve with the kebabs.

Keeping it in the Family: A Guide to Agricultural Succession Planning

One of the biggest worries in the agricultural industry is effective planning for the next generation to take over the farm. A recent survey has said that it is the biggest concern for 15% of farmers and that 60% of farmers had made no provision at all for succession.

Another survey of young farmers put that figure as high as 70%.

Younger farmers tend not to bring succession up with their parents because they don’t want to cause embarrassment or offence. However, the conversation is important if everyone is serious about protecting the farm through the generations.

It is important to understand that succession planning is not just about retirement and inheritance, but it is about putting a plan in place for the continued success of the business which takes into account short-term goals and the longer-term vision for the farm.

To start, you should draw up a list of the farm’s assets and then have a discussion with all family members who are involved along with a solicitor and an accountant. Professionals tend to keep the meeting more business-focused and less emotional. Having everyone together also reduces professional expenses as the same conversation doesn’t need to be had multiple times.

Having the correct documentation in place helps everyone to know where they stand which can make a handover to the next generation a smoother and less fraught process. Key documents would be wills for each family member, LPAs where appropriate and partnership or shareholder agreements.

It is worth noting that children who have given up most of their lives to work in a family business for low pay on the promise that they will inherit the farm will usually benefit in court if it is felt that an inheritance treats them unfairly. Guest v Guest and Davies v Davies (which is often referred to as ‘Cowshed Cinderella’) are both examples of this.

Clients often want advice for when some of the children have worked on the farm and plan to continue the business on their parents’ retirement, but other children have chosen different careers.

The actual handover is a key moment in succession planning, 16% of farmers believe that the next generation doesn’t have the right skills and experience to take over the running of the business, so we strongly recommend building the training of the next generation into your plan.

Treating farming and non-farming children fairly does not mean equally and succession planning allows you to lay out how all family members will benefit so everyone is informed.

There is a lot to consider (much of it outside the scope of this article) and a solicitor specialising in agricultural law can help you plan for your farm’s success for years to come.

Runners invited to free training sessions Runners can get advice from experienced racers and coaches at a series of free training sessions in the build-up to this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run which takes place on Sunday, October 13th.

The sessions take place fortnightly on Wednesday evenings at Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track in Bishops Road. The first session takes place on July 10th, with the events held up until October 2nd.

Each session starts with a warm-up at 7pm and will last around an hour.

Runners can meet seasoned competitors who will be acting as pacers to help entrants achieve personal best times in the race. You do not have to be signed

up to the Perkins Great Eastern Run to take part in the sessions; you could be considering taking part or just want some running advice.

Arthur Rank Hospice’s Community Team Scoop Top Award Arthur Rank Hospice is celebrating becoming a regional champion in the prestigious NHS Parliamentary Awards. The Hospice’s Community Team, which comprises of the Specialist Palliative Home Care team and Hospice at Home team, has won The Care and Compassion Award for the East of England, after being nominated by local MPs, Heidi Allen and Stephen Barclay.

The awards supported by Fuji Film, are designed to recognise the massive contribution made by individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. The Care and Compassion Award is open to any care staff member ‘that has used their skills to ensure that patients experience care and compassion’, with the criteria specifying ‘outstanding nominees who have innovated, impressed and made a real difference to how the NHS provides care for patients […] delivering health and high-quality care, now and for future generations.’

Overall, more than six hundred nominations were made by MPs celebrating staff in their constituencies who go above and beyond the call of duty and who make a genuine difference to the people they care for. There were ten award categories, with one regional champion chosen for each, by an expert panel of health and care leaders.

As regional champions, the Arthur Rank Hospice Community Team were presented with their award at a special ceremony on Wednesday July 10th at the House of Commons.

Ann Radmore, Regional Director for NHS England and NHS Improvement in the East of England, comments: “I was impressed by the high standard of all entries from the East of England this year and choosing between the dozens of champions, who all 30

August Gardening Tips August is the month when you “reap what you have sown!” What could be more rewarding than to eat a meal where the fresh produce is the result of your hard work?Make sure that you harvest crops such as courgettes, runner and French beans regularly before they grow too large and stringy – the more you pick the more you get!

Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. As you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer.

Also keeping the weeds at bay is important (which in the drier months –if we get any – should be less prolific); a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation in drier weather, preferably immediately after it has rained.

Other jobs for this month include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes.

• Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot.

• Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year, and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

• Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss.

• Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid; cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers.

Bring Back Papers!

Where wallpapers were once used liberally throughout our homes, the trend to turn to paint and keep the walls in simple flatter textures saw papers almost disappear from our lives. In recent months, however, they have once again become very much in vogue!

With papers adding subtle fabulous textures and keeping our interiors simple and interesting, a whole new dimension is now available for all of our pockets. Many websites can help your search with regard to colour and cost; these can also be useful to get an idea of what style you may like, and these are often supported by photographs of what a paper might look like in a room set.

Personally, I like to be able to see the paper and feel the texture in making my selection. I think this is especially important when selecting a wall covering for an area that will bear higher traffic – the paper may need to have a vinyl face so that it is easily wiped down, and the thickness of the paper may need to be considered.

There are of course many ways in which we can now use papers.

With some rolls running into several hundreds of pounds – if it is that ‘must have’ for your interior, perhaps you could consider using it in a small

quantity by applying it to walls within panels, framed and hung as artwork, or inside a glass-fronted cabinet to display your drinks selection, china collection, ornaments or trophies!

We have seen a beautiful selection of murals and wall panels if you really want an area to stand out; used in a bedroom, entrance hall or your living space, they can certainly add personality and flair. Designers Guild have recently launched a collection of dream-like, handpainted designs that are subtle and delicate; pared down with white wood and natural finishes, they make for a fresh look.

Often these panels can be resized to your home’s dimensions – there is no point you purchasing a design that is three metres tall, if your ceilings are just two metres, unless of course you don’t like one third of the design! You will often find that with a wall panel or mural, there is a main design and

also a coordinate so that the main show doesn’t have to run around a whole space – focusing your eye on one area. Elitis have a beautiful selection of coordinate designs that can be used to complement a feature wall, directing you into an adjoining room, or simply by themselves to add depth and texture to a plain wall.

Lincrusta have always had a place in the market for the textured wall finish, often used below the dado in entrance halls to protect the walls where they may be knocked frequently. Their new designs add a modern take on a finish that has been used much less recently. From this idea of adding texture, Arte provide a wonderful selection of wood veneer wall coverings, whilst Elitis have brought out an incredible velvet selection in jewel colours.

Joint Property Ownership The Property Allowance introduced in April 2017, permits a flat rate deduction of £1,000 to be claimed against property income, instead of keeping detailed records of expenses.

As Scott Bishop writes, it’s attractive but not always simple, raising interesting questions including whether individuals renting out a joint property are both required to make the same claims.

In short, the answer is ‘no’. The claims are not dependent on one another and in some situations, it can be beneficial to make opposing claims.

For jointly owned properties it might be favourable for one person to claim expenses as usual and the other to claim the property allowance, particularly if a property is held in unequal proportion.

In the following example, Peter (father) owns 90% and Tom (his son) 10%. Income from the property is outlined below: Total (100%)

Tom would benefit by claiming the property allowance because his proportion of expenses is below £1,000. Peter, however, should not claim and should instead deduct actual expenses incurred as these exceed £1,000.

Therefore, it is worth considering the percentage ownership of a shared rental property to ensure that the most beneficial claim is made for each individual year-on-year.

There may be further considerations. If you jointly own property with your spouse and want to change the split of income to reflect the beneficial ownership, HMRC requires specific detail on its Form 17. In such cases, there are other tax factors to consider including the implication for future Capital Gains Tax. Our Property Group is always happy to assist. There are so many reasons to shop online - you can buy anything from AA batteries to Z-beds, prices are competitive, shipping is fast and even returns are easy.

For the most part, online shopping is safe. However, a bit of common sense and a fair amount of caution is required, so as not to fall into the hands of on-line fraudsters. Here are some of our tips to help keep your finances safe.

When signing up for a new account online, only fill out the fields which are required. There’s no need to enter your address, phone number or any other personal details (even your middle name) if the site doesn’t ask you to. No online shopping store needs your National Insurance number or your birth date to do business. However, if crooks get them, combined with your credit card number for purchases, they can do a lot of damage. The more they know, the easier it is to steal your identity.

If you’re ordering products you will, of course, have to provide a delivery address. But if you can, have items delivered to a work address.

Instead of handing over your bank details, it’s worth setting up a PayPal account and using that, wherever possible, as the merchant is unable to see your bank account details or debit card number. If you

don’t want to use PayPal, then try Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you can’t use those, why not set up a bank account specifically for online shopping and only keep a small amount of money in it. That way, if those details are ever compromised, any losses will be very limited.

A lot of e-mail accounts such as outlook.com or gmail.com are free, so it’s a good idea to set one up for on-line shopping. That way, you can limit the amount of unwanted e-mail you receive, and it keeps your main e-mail account much freer of spam. It also means you’re not forced to use the same e-mail address for all your online accounts, which is a security risk.

Don’t use a debit card. Your protection if things go wrong is much weaker than if you use a credit card.

Once you’ve used a credit card on the Internet, check your card statements carefully.

Phil’s Ride

Community Spirit on Two Wheels!

hilip Beeton, aged fifty from Southery, was a fiancé, a father, a brother, a son and an all-round family man. In 2015 he was killed in a road traffic collision by a twenty-tonne tipper lorry while on his way home from an average day at work. He is remembered and loved by many.

In his memory there is an annual charity event called ‘Phil’s Ride’ held in Southery, Norfolk. It was set up back in 2016 by his fiancee, Jane, and really good friend David Fletcher. The idea was that people would show up on motorcycles for a one hundredmile long trip or bicycles to participate in a twentyfour-mile round trip. This was to celebrate his life and raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance which attended to Phil on the day of the crash, and saved the life of his nephew, who was also in the accident. Riding two wheels was close to Phil’s heart as he and his fiancee used to ride together. On the motorbike route there is one stop, Blakeney. This is a place where Jane and Phil used to visit regularly.

Every penny raised on the day goes straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. For the first year in 2016 they didn’t expect many people to turn up.

There was no ‘sign up’ and no sponsorship forms to fill out and so, they had to wait and see how many showed up on the day. They were astonished by the turnout from such a small village and £6278 was raised in just one day in memory of Phil. The ride starts outside the ‘Olde White Bell’ pub in Southery which was Phil’s local pub. Jane says that there is a ‘sense of family’ at ‘the Bell’.

Shocked by how much money they initially raised, the event was scheduled again for 2017 and the target was to raise just 1p over the previous amount.

The turnout was even bigger and the emotion that Phil’s family and friends felt as they saw all of the people show up to support the EAAA and remember Phil was overwhelming. This event shows off such a beautiful sense of community, camaraderie and family. Everyone got goose bumps and clapped as the bikers departed and when they came back, the music started, the raffle was called, and pride was felt by all. On this day in 2017, £12,155.22 was raised through buckets and sponsorships. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event and I couldn’t be happier to support such an amazing cause. Last year’s ride then smashed this amount out of the park when more than £16,000 was raised for the amazing team. In total, this event has raised more than £35,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

This year will be the fourth year of Phil’s Ride and the target amount is again just 1p over 2018’s money raised but I think you’ll agree it deserves more. You never know when you might need the Air Ambulance, so please get on your bike and get involved!

Phil's Ride 2019 will be on Sunday, August 25th and is open to anyone on two wheels who would like to take part. The team, comprising family and friends of Phil, are hoping to repeat the success of the years before and also encourage children to take part in their own course, mapped out on Southery playing field. History

The Ups, Downs and Restoration of the Chapel near ASDA by Paul Eden, Wisbech Society Turn left out of ASDA’s car park and you’ll see Lambert’s Walk, just beyond Nixon’s timber merchants. It leads to Wisbech General Cemetery and its restored chapel.

In 1835, a group of Wisbech nonconformists opened the Wisbech General Cemetery on a plot adjacent to the Leverington Road Toll-Bar, where today’s North End turns into Leverington Road. A non-conformist cemetery, it was available to any Protestant townsfolk who didn’t conform to the governance of the Church of England. Joshua Bland, a prominent non-conformist, sold the cemetery land on the understanding that he would receive a £17 annuity and there would be no building on it during his lifetime.

Bland died in December 1847, by which time the trustees of the Wisbech Cemetery Company had already noted their wish to build an unconsecrated chapel on the site. With the annuity funds released and Bland’s objections removed, plans were drawn up.

The chapel, soon after completion in 1848. Wisbech & Fenland Museum record: “…it is desirable to erect a Chapel and a House for a Lodge and other buildings… and to raise the sum of £500 for the purpose…” The chapel opened later that year.

The General Cemetery remained popular for burials and as a pleasant environment in which to walk, until a new cemetery was opened off Mount Pleasant Road. Also unconsecrated, Mount Pleasant gradually became the town’s primary burial ground. By the end of World War I, the General Cemetery was in decline. From 1949 it became overgrown, although burials continued until 1972. A final interment, of Basil Lambert, took place in 1994. A Wisbech Society supporter, his bequest enabled the Society to construct the pathway – Lambert’s Walk – that leads off North End. Meanwhile, the chapel fell into disrepair.

By 1974, it was verging on dereliction and Fenland District Council decided demolition was the only sensible option. But strong public opposition forced a rethink. The chapel survived the attentions of vandals and the removal of its roof and doors – apparently to deter rough sleepers – before, in 1989, supporting stanchions were installed to prevent its walls from collapsing.

Chapel interior, September 7th 2017. Wisbech Society In 1992, the “Friends of Leverington Road Cemetery” was formed to reclaim the cemetery ground, tough work that the organisation continues to this day.

It also revealed the site’s importance as a wildlife habitat, and attracted regular financial support from Wisbech Society.

In February 2015, the Society began the complicated process of applying for Heritage Lottery Fund money for a restoration of the chapel and extensive works to the cemetery monuments. In March 2017, Wisbech Society learned that its application for £303,800 had been successful, and building work began the following January.

By summer 2018, the chapel was substantially complete and, with ten World War I soldiers buried in the cemetery, along with a World War II RAF pilot, the chapel and cemetery hosted a moving event to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, on November 11th.

Formally opened on April 11th this year, the chapel is now available as a beautiful, uplifting community space.

In this month’s issue, we meet Vince Gale, (44), owner of V & G Caravans.

Based in the heart of the Cambridgeshire fens at Benwick Road, Whittlesey, his company specialises in all types of caravan and motorhome repairs and servicing. Vince and close friend, George, started V & G Caravans in February 1991 after the caravan company they worked for went into liquidation. They thought that something had to come out of the ashes, so they took on the existing insurance work and completed all outstanding commitments. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, and have built up a glowing reputation on the camping and caravanning circuit, for their excellent customer service and astounding product knowledge. Tiger Racing Wisbech’s Fa mous Kit Car Manufacturer Jim Dudley, originally from Bexleyheath, owns Tiger Racing Ltd, Wisbech. He is married to Sue and has two daughters, Joanne and Laura, and son Paul.

Jim opened his first small garage in 1970 and that same year also saw his first quick laps around Brands Hatch motor racing circuit in his first beloved Lotus Seven. Through the 1970s, Jim raced karts and saloon cars with some success. He went on to open a series of crash repair centres and VW specialist garages with his brother Phil.

In 1989, Tiger Sportscars was formed. Phil went on to greater things with his crash repair centre in Deptford while Jim

worked at the Tiger business with family and, in 1995, had his first major order for fifty cars for the Japanese market. Since then, six new models have been designed and produced and, alongside the Tiger models, the family also own the historic ERA racing car mark (English Racing Automobiles) and produce two models under this mark.

These days, Tigers can be purchased in the kit form, either as a part-kit or as a full-kit with nothing else to purchase to build at home, with full back up from the factory. However, Tigers can also be purchased fully built as a “new” car with a current registration plate.
