Claire x

This time two years ago I was finishing my GCSEs and leaving school, getting excited for prom and ready for the future ahead of me! I can’t help but to reminisce and feel the same feeling of relief and pride that I felt back then, knowing that the stress was over! Well, to the Year 11s who will be finishing their exams this month, enjoy your time off. You’ve worked hard and you deserve this time to chill out. Also, have a great prom! See our school news page to see what the schools of Wisbech have been getting up to and also, see our fantastic new ‘Art Matters’ page and read all about the ‘Crowded Room’ in Wisbech by Tim Mann. With summer comes sunshine (hopefully), relaxation and lots of fantastic events here in Wisbech! I hope you enjoy every single day of July and don’t get too burnt in the sunshine!

“The Big Dig”

– Fascinating Local Archaeology in our ‘Own Back Yard’! By Taleyna Fletcher, Townscape Heritage Officer, The Wisbech High Street Project The “Big Dig” took place over five days, between May 29th and June 2nd, 2018. Working alongside professional archaeologists from Archaeology Project Services, supported by local amateur archaeology group, FenArch, volunteers were given the opportunity to participate in a real archaeological dig in the gardens of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum. We investigated four test pits, spread over the museum’s little garden, sieving

4

all of the soil as we went. More than a hundred volunteers of all ages from the Wisbech community signed up to investigate what archaeological remains or finds lay buried in the soil. For those unable to dig, there was an opportunity to wash the finds, or to sieve to look for artefacts the diggers may have missed. There were also activities for children, including a sand pit where little diggers could search for buried artefacts. Due to the depth of topsoil in the test pits, we were unable to reach a level where archaeological features would be found. Some test pits reached around half a metre in depth and the edges started to become unstable, so we had to stop and record them for safety reasons. Despite this, EVERYONE involved had a great time! The density of finds recovered from such a small area was surprising, and these ranged in date from a Roman ear scoop to a crisp packet dating to the 1970s! Other interesting artefacts included 18th Century blue glass from a jar or bottle,

Roman pottery, a stamped stem from a clay pipe, locally produced milk bottles, mid-20th Century coins, animal bone and stoneware bottles from ‘Oldham and Sons’ of Wisbech. The finds will now go to specialists for reporting and dating. Once returned, we plan to have a small exhibition in the museum and later, once built, in The Gap on Wisbech High Street. What this event showed, like the nearby Wisbech Castle dig in 2009, is that people are fascinated by their local history, and community archaeology events allow people to be “hands on” with their own heritage. Feedback from all participants was overwhelmingly positive, with the most notable outcome being that people enjoyed learning a new skill and the opportunity

to meet new people. The dig brought in additional visitors to the museum and several new members signed up to join FenArch too. We were delighted to welcome, on Day Four, the MP for North East Cambridgeshire, Steve Barclay, who enjoyed learning about what we had discovered and who joined in with digging too. A huge thanks must go to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, (Curator Robert Bell in particular), for allowing us to dig up the garden, Lydia Hendry and Neil Parker from APS for overseeing the whole dig, volunteers from FenArch who gave their time to help supervise the volunteers, (especially Chris Green, who was there all day, everyday), and of course the Heritage Lottery Fund for paying for it all through the Wisbech High Street Project!

Recycle with Flair – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin Broadway Market teems with parents and pushchairs seeking a free spot on the pavement to drink a cappuccino. Number seven has a somewhat dour, grey painted frontage, but the large window is colourfully displayed with fabrics and graffiti style art. Shop owner Barley Massey told me their busiest day is Sunday and having recently decided to brush up my sewing skills I was there to learn. I and half-a-dozen other ladies spent the day collecting tips and trying out the machines. I perhaps wouldn’t have shared this with you had it not been for the thrilling basement conversion. It’s the sort of thing that rocks my boat and I thought you might be interested to see how the clever use of recycled materials can liven up an interior. The eclectic modern look makes visitors feel relaxed and while we were sewing downstairs, Barley’s partner upstairs in the shop kept up the tempo with his choice playlist of jazz music. Barley shared tips and tricks for making clothes from leftover fabrics and precious secondhand finds. Tips like, use safety pins instead of pins when making adjustments as they stay in and don’t stab you. Simple logic, but I’d never thought of it. When we stopped for lunch she told me about the shop, how it has been a life’s work to develop the building from a rundown retail space to the vibrant place it is now. She has worked hard and employed her own creative and youthful style in the renovation. For instance, gentlemen’s neckties make a long stripy curtain beneath the workbench and reclaimed tiles form a bright backdrop. It reminded me that we shouldn’t always look for new; it is too easy to succumb to manufacturers’ advertising overtures. Sometimes it is better to rifle through the leftovers and buy second-hand because it allows your creativity to shine through, and you can be assured your home, and indeed your clothes, will be unique.

Fabrications is at 7 Broadway Market, London, E8 4PH. Classes in textile recycling are run by Barley Massey. Photo credits: Yasmin Chopin

Your Garden

JuLY Gardening Tips July tends to be one of the driest months, but nothing is certain with the weather nowadays! Make sure you keep crops well-watered. It is better to water them frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable, as the temperatures are lower and the sun not so strong, and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds. Also, hoeing is good for water retention as it breaks up the soil and it also keeps weeds at bay. All of the hard work of the previous months should be paying off now, and each visit to the allotment or vegetable patch should see you returning with fresh vegetables or fruit. It is time to harvest garlic and onions: a few days before you do this, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry spell, lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun to dry them out, as the more thoroughly they are dried out, the longer they will keep. Also those wonderful tasting early potatoes can be lifted: what better than freshly dug potatoes with mint, butter and a summery salad?

Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch:•

Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6” deep, and drop the leek into the hole. Water it in and the job’s done. You don’t need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. The reason you plant in a hole is to blanch the stem.

Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also check the potato plants and earth-up if necessary to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light.

• When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners, or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed. • Don’t forget to nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes, they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. • Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight, and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease. • Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Continue sowing salad crops. Take time to sit back, admire your hard work over the past few months … and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Happy harvesting!

Workplace Pensions: Meeting your Changing Needs by Tony Sharpe, Chartered Financial Planner

M

any employers are now hitting the three-year anniversary of setting up their workplace pension schemes. Tony Sharpe looks at what this milestone means. “Workplace pensions are firmly embedded in businesses throughout the UK, with employees now committed to building personal pension funds throughout their working lives. This April saw the next stage in the gradual increase to minimum contribution levels for both employers and employees. It has been an interesting process to watch the roll-out of workplace pensions to small and mediumsized businesses. There will be employers who have found that the provider and the scheme they initially selected for their scheme have fallen short of their expectations. Those who selected the more basic functionality of NEST and multi-employer schemes may have found that support for their scheme has been in short supply, and that the choices on offer to their staff members are more limited than they had envisaged. The result of their concerns has been a real desire in many businesses to review the scheme

they have in place, and the threeyear anniversary of the scheme is the perfect time to do this. At this anniversary, the employer must re-enrol those members of staff who opted out of the scheme when it was first set up, and carry out an assessment of their workers to determine their eligibility and entitlements, re-enrolling any staff affected. In addition, the employer must complete a re-declaration of compliance. Reviewing your scheme is an area where the support of a financial adviser can be invaluable. He or she will help you explore alternative options and potential new

providers, where needed. At Almary Green, we provide a range of employer support services to help you with both the re-enrolment and re-declaration processes, and will carry out a review of your workplace pension to ensure it still meets your needs”. Tony is a Chartered Financial Planner from Almary Green Investments Ltd – a chartered firm of Independent Financial Advisers with offices in Wisbech, Norwich and Lowestoft. To discuss financial planning for you or your business, contact Tony on 01945 429518 or e-mail him at tony. sharpe@almarygreen.com.

Retirees in East Anglia gain over £200k from home ownership by Alex Doggett, Agency Owner - Aboda Homes

T

he average over-65 homeowner in Britain has seen their property wealth gain £159,000 – or £7,000 annually - in the 23 years, they have typically owned their home.

The figures, from equity release firm Key Retirement, also reveal that over-65s in London are of course the biggest winners with property prices soaring by £394,944 over the 27 years they have on average owned their homes – that’s the equivalent to £14,257 a year. Homeowners in the South East (who have typically owned for 21 years on average) are more than £230,000 better off from buying a property while over-65s in East Anglia (18 years) have seen gains of £206,000 during the average time they have owned their current home. All areas of the country have recorded strong gains underlining, the company says, the long-term investment success of home ownership and the growing importance of property wealth for retirement planning. Total property wealth owned by over-65s who have paid off their mortgages is near a record high of £1.09 trillion. Key Retirement says these gains are helping deliver a significant boost to retirement standards of living as the equity release market expands with its customers releasing an average £77,380 of property wealth and nearly £134,000 in London and £91,000 in the South East.

latest UK Residential Market Survey from the RICS with small increases in some areas offset by small falls in others. Nationwide anticipate prices will rise by just 1% over the course of 2018 as subdued levels of activity and the likelihood of an interest rate rise continue to impact the market. LOCAL MARKET REVIEW: (see graph) Over the last 12 full months, there have been 1,113 sales in Wisbech PE13 & PE14. This is a +2.7% change on the previous 12 month period and a positive indicator that demand is increasing locally after several months of reduced transaction levels locally and nationally - while home values locally have held strong and continued to rise. This potentially indicates that local house price growth may increase further in the short term to medium term! Check out my analysis of average property values and key market metrics over the last year in the graph If you wish to bring your home to market in the near future and maximise your home’s value - do get in touch! I’m always happy to give you honest advice!

NATIONAL TRENDS: UK house prices rose by 4.2% in the 12 months to March 2018, unchanged from February, official figures indicate. Across five of the eleven regions of the UK, annual growth remains above 5.0% Overall, average prices are expected to remain reasonably flat over coming months as reported in the

What Happens To Your Facebook Page After Your Death? BY REBEKAH CROCKFORD A legacy contact operates in similar ways to a trustee; they can make some changes to the account but cannot login to the account or delete any contacts. The steps to create a legacy contact are simple and can be done by the client from their own account.

When helping clients with a will, I am sometimes asked what will happen to their Facebook page in the event of their death. I have to respond that unless you have stated what you want, it is likely that nothing will happen. Your Facebook page will continue to exist just as it had while you were alive. A bigger issue is that most people don’t even ask, they consider what will happen to their assets, but give no serious consideration to their online life. A Facebook page doesn’t have monetary value, but it does have sentimental value to the family of the deceased client. These accounts typically contain hundreds of personal pictures and messages which may be of comfort to those left behind when the client dies. Different people, however, will have different wishes about how they would like their page dealt with. Thankfully Facebook has put processes in place to deal with the mortality of its users. Providing the user has set up how they would like their page to be handled on their death, Facebook accounts of deceased relatives are fairly easy to deal with, Facebook allows either memorialising a deceased person’s account or deleting it outright. If the user requests memorialisation they will need to nominate someone to be their legacy contact.

If the client has died without leaving wishes as to what they want to happen to their account after death, it is also relatively easy for a friend or relative to memorialise or delete the account, the executor or a family member can contact Facebook with a copy of the death certificate. Difficulties could arise if family members have different wishes about what should happen. Some family members may wish to keep the account and feel unable to let go of the photos and content contained within and others may consider it too much like the deceased is alive and prefer that the page be deleted. Some clients decide to state in their will what they would like to happen to their account, but this can also cause problems. What happens if a client requests their account be memorialised in their will but later instructs Facebook to delete their account without changing their will? What if a close relative requests deletion contrary to the will? What if a client dies without leaving such instructions? These are all new situations for probate lawyers to consider, so to avoid as many of these problems as we can, I would suggest that the client either puts their desires in a letter of wishes or that they leave instructions to Facebook. Without knowing what the deceased would have preferred there are no clear answers as to what the protocol is. Perhaps all we can do is ask the family to consider what the deceased would have wanted.

Secure your Garden Against Green-fingered Thieves this Summer As a nation of garden lovers, we Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes; cosy corners to relax in, barbecue areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the children. Splashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors locked and a light left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family … and a chance for thieves to strike! According to the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly-laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against greenfingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty. • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed, (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcome activity from your home. • Install some sensory/outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security, or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend, lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group, where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/ When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. Free Software Utilities for your PC - Advice from Diamond Byte Solutions

This month, we take a look at some of the top FREE, third-party software utilities available for your PC.

BACKUP: ‘EaseUS ToDo Backup Free’ Computer users should always perform two types of backup: one for files and documents, and the other for the system. ‘EaseUS ToDo Backup Free’ is reasonably good at both types of backup and is straightforward to use. It can back up everything from selected files and file types to entire partitions or drives, and includes cloning tools for upgrading from one drive to another. It provides you with backup scheduling options and support for incremental updates, so backups are kept as small and efficient as possible. When restoring data, ‘EaseUS Todo Backup Free’ gives a timeline of the date and exact time of backups so you can easily pick a point in time in which to find a backed-up file. www.todo-backup.com

Cloud Storage: Dropbox Nowadays, storing information in “the cloud” is pretty much the norm. Dropbox offers 2GB of free storage, which isn’t much, but you can increase it by referring friends and other tasks. Dropbox offers an app for every major device so you can take your files anywhere. It’s also easy to share files with others, and the service has a great interface on the web and desktop. Whether you use it for backup, as a cloud flash drive, or for setting up shared folders with others, you can’t go wrong with Dropbox. www.dropbox.com

PC Cleaning / Management: CCleaner Over time, Windows builds up useless files that take up space. CCleaner is our favourite disk cleaner and the foundation to a clean Windows 10 system, but it also has many more useful features inside its toolkit. Aside from cleaning the caches of all kinds of software, CCleaner lets you easily disable startup programs. www.piriform.com

Browser: Google Chrome Although Microsoft Edge comes pre-installed on Windows computers, there are several excellent, free alternatives which can often be faster, have more options, and in many cases, be more secure than Edge. Chrome is an extendable, efficient and stable browser that takes up the minimum of screen space. It has many easily obtained and installed extensions, as well as support for parental controls. Admittedly, it’s not brilliant on machines with limited RAM, and because it is developed by Google, you might be uncomfortable with the ways in which your browsing data may be used. www.google.com/chrome

The Deepings Caravan Park – 25 Years Young and Only Getting Stronger

Summer is just around the corner so what better way to spend those sunny days than in the great outdoors? Better still, this little gem is right on our doorstep! Darren and Belinda have been owners and residents of The Deepings Caravan Park for sixteen years and they always ensure that their guests are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly staff, including their adorable pug and French bulldog. They take great pride in knowing that the park is a safe environment for families, and all of the guests are friendly to one another, making it a pleasant close-knit community; a home from home. They are also generous enough to offer a pensioner’s rate; Sunday-Thursday £8 per night. It’s no surprise why guests keep coming back, time and time again. Open March-October, the park provides accommodation for touring caravans, tents, motorhomes and static caravans (fifty weeks per year) with over one hundred and seventy pitches. There is a variety of facilities and activities on offer for guests, young and old, including a clubhouse, shop, kids’ play area, fishing, dog walking area and crazy golf. What’s more, the weekly evening entertainment is always popular amongst

guests; bingo on Thursdays, an act, music and karaoke on Saturdays and quiz night on Sundays. The park is also hosting Beerfest on Saturday August 4th. If glamping is more your style, the park has two fabulous glamping pods which are sure to take your fancy. They are available from £35 per night and sleep two adults and two children. Amenities include a TV with Freeview, heater, fridge, kettle and sofa bed. They have been incredibly popular ever since they opened in 2017, so if you want to book one for a night or two (or three!), it’s always best to phone in advance to avoid disappointment. Don’t worry though; there are plans to add another four pods to the park this year. There are also new developments being built at the site. In June this year, there will be a new toilet block with underfloor heating for tourers, and in 2019, a new leisure centre is due to open. A £500,000 investment has been set aside for caravan owners and their guests to enjoy the centre which will comprise of two bowling alleys, an indoor soft play area, arcade games and a restaurant. For more information, visit www.thedeepings.com or call 01778 344335.

Use Them or Lose Them - by Holly-Jean

B

anks - love them or hate them? The marmite of the adult world. Personally, I think they can be infuriating. Though doing a great service, they’re always busier than you’d like, there only ever seems to be one cashier serving people while the other avoids eye contact of those in the long line, and for some reason, banks are always ridiculously hot and stuffy! Some people have converted completely to an automated method of banking, and some would use nothing other than their local branch. But, love them or hate them, we still need them for basic things, such as paying cash in and general customer services. Branches are being closed all over our towns and villages, simply because they’re becoming less used due to online banking and the banks trying to save money where they can.

debate and controversy, but rather a community voice, in uproar about the shutting of their local banks. “Not everyone can or wants to bank online, please think of those loyal customers.” “Reducing these services whilst local transport is also declining is devastating for the elderly and people who can’t drive.” The majority of comments regarding the banks shutting were that people were worried about what will happen next. Where will these people have to go to pay money in and get it out? Will this complicate matters for other local businesses that may only accept cash? And also, not only will the closure be affecting those that use our local banks, but also those that work there.

Lucy Broadbent, aged 19, from Chatteris, addressed the fact that young people can be oblivious to these issues and so she stopped to discuss the banks closing with Mary Green, a retired nurse who worked in Doddington. Mary is petitioning against the closure of her local bank and spends a lot of time outside of it, with a sign saying, “Please do not close our Lloyds Bank in Chatteris”. She has lived in Chatteris for over fifty years and doesn’t want to see her friends and old patients, (who she still sees regularly around the area), suffer.

I can sit here and say, ‘Use it or lose it’ but, on the flip side, I do understand the frustration of using banks. They are slow - you can guarantee when you pop in, in a rush, there will be someone in front of you that wants to pay in what feels like £5,000 in coins and they need to re-count every penny. Don’t even get me started on those ‘paying in’ machines. You pile up a wad of cash for the thing to spit notes out in confusion because one is slightly folded on the corner. You can bet that you’ll walk in and have someone standing in a busy bank telling a cashier their life story. But, I guess that’s actually what makes them slightly special. The people that work at your local bank know you, they can talk about how your son’s doing and ask if you had a nice holiday. Now that’s something an app can’t do. Sure, an online bank will still know that you spent 75% of your wages on food, but it won’t know your name and ask how your day is, like someone behind the counter will.

Every local town around here has a ‘discussion page’ on Facebook. This can be a sea of controversy; it’s almost exciting to post on there to see what danger awaits, amongst argumentative comments. However, I set out to find out the opinions of other people in the local area and I posted on my local page. I was not met with

Unfortunately, if these banks are not being used, then they will have to close, and I’m hoping that maybe we can join the side of those who don’t want this, and try our best to use the local amenities. Next time you’re walking down the street, I really hope you can think of this article and do your best to support your local bank for people like Mary Green.

Young people, like myself, can be guilty of being oblivious to certain issues that affect the community. Local banks shutting will have a huge impact on everybody.

THE ALAN HUDSON DAY TREATMENT CENTRE The Treatment Centre is an Arthur Rank Hospice Charity service in Wisbech, based at North Cambs Hospital. It provides a range of specialist out-patient support services, free of charge, to people living with life-limiting conditions, and their families, in the Fens. We spoke to the matron there, Michelle Knight, to find out more about what they do and how the planned changes will help enhance a service which was recently rated as ‘Outstanding’ by CQC. Q – What does the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre do day-today and who is it for? I’m proud to lead a very dedicated and extremely caring, multi-disciplinary team of nine staff and around fourteen volunteers. We provide care and services to people who are living with, and beyond, cancer; haematological disorders; or with a life-limiting illness, such as lung disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, and heart failure. We also provide intravenous treatments for patients who benefit from a local service. We are open five days a week and provide day therapy, treatment and clinical days, complementary and diversional therapies, as well as bereavement and support services for patients’ families. We also have a Hospice at Home service and give clinical advice and support to people receiving palliative care on the Trafford Ward, which is next door. 28

D I S C O V E R I N G

Q – If no charge is made to patients for their care, how is it all funded? We are part of the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s range of services. Like all their care, the Treatment Centre is funded partly by statutory sources, with a large proportion raised thanks to the truly admirable fundraising efforts of our local community. Q – What will the changes entail and what are you most excited about? The whole project will offer so much for the patients and provide some much-needed space which will make it easier for us to care. We plan to expand into vacant rooms next door and refurbish areas we currently use for dedicated purposes. For example, there will be a peaceful space for our complementary therapists to deliver holistic therapies such as Reiki; treatment rooms to accommodate specialist equipment to support patients with complex needs; as well as a sensory garden and additional space for Hospice at Home staff to work. You can see the plans

Wisbech

for yourself online at arhc.org.uk/ Alan-Hudson-DTC-Appeal.asp Q – What can people do to help? We’re hoping that the close-knit community around this area will get behind us, donate, spread the word and support the #AlanHudsonDTCAppeal to help us raise the final £50,000. You can make a personal donation on JustGiving; champion us as your charity of the year at work; organise a fundraiser with friends; or even take on a challenge like a skydive, trek or run. Q- Where can we find out more? If you’re online, at arhc.org.uk/ alan-hudson-day-treatmentcentre.asp. Alternatively, talk to our Project Development Officer, Phillippa by calling 07766 733062 or emailing phillippa.ashcroft@ arhc.org.uk. Also, it’s our Open Day on Thursday July 5th, between 11 am and 4 pm at the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre! There will be a strawberry cream tea, stalls, displays of patients’ arts and crafts and the building plans will be there for you to see. Everybody is welcome – just turn up! juLY 2018

CRASH FOR CANCER Mick Gedney, aged 49, from Wisbech, is returning to the banger racing track after ten years away, in order to raise funds for ‘The Big C’, Norfolk’s cancer charity. ‘I lost my father through cancer and a couple of my friends also lost their fathers this way. Over a pint of beer one day, we sat there and said: “Right, we’re going to have another go, and we’re going to do it. This is the charity that we’re going to support”’. From that moment, ‘Crash for

Cancer’ was born. Returning every August Bank Holiday Monday, the charity event has been vastly popular. Last year, around £20,000 was raised for the Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital Cancer Care Unit. 2018 will be the third year of this event and all proceeds from ‘Crash for Cancer 2018’ will be going to ‘The Big C’, Norfolk’s cancer charity.

There are a number of initiatives which play a part in the efforts to raise as much as they can for this hugely worthy cause. Drivers who are racing will be getting sponsored, there will be bucket collections and a raffle with some absolutely fantastic prizes, so please, get down to this event and be as generous as you are able, to raise some money for this fabulous charity. Monday August 27th at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn from 1 pm. Kids go free! For more information, please visit www. stockcar-racing.co.uk.

Fenland Family History Society Our monthly meetings continue in Wisbech Library, Ely Place, Wisbech, on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7pm – 9 pm. We have our gravestone inscription files available to browse and our book stall, which also includes useful files etc. for storing your family history. A cuppa and social interchange will welcome you, plus the opportunity to do some online research. Our experienced researchers will be on hand to help if required. This will then be followed by a special guest speaker. Our June Meeting: Thursday June 28th - The talk will be by Jean Burnett, one of our members. It is a story about finding a letter in her grandmother’s box, written during the Boer War and the research to find the story behind the letter and who sent it. Our July Meeting: Thursday July 26th - We invite Dorothy Halfhide from the Thorney Society as our special speaker. Dorothy’s talk will be about the Huguenots, Who were they? Why did they come to England? And how can juLY 2018

we research their history? Many of us have them somewhere in our family history! There will be no meeting in August. Special Events: We attended the Walpole St Peter’s Flower Festival, a fiveday-event with a unique display about weddings through the ages, which matched the theme of the festival. The display included a wedding dress made of pure, undyed Jacob Sheep wool for a winter wedding, a posy of flowers with flowers from the language of love, including the royal favourite, myrtle, a wedding cake, and ring cushion. The display notices included descriptions of the traditions, customs, and folklore surrounding weddings, which visitors found fascinating. We also had on display wedding photographs of six generations of one family dating back to 1874. We enjoyed the research required for the display and were rewarded by the lovely comments from the visitors. Our team will also attend The

Secret Garden Food & Craft Fair in Wisbech St Mary on June 23rd. Our experienced researchers will be on hand, with online connections to various websites, offering family history information to anyone visiting our stand all for free. If you would like us to attend one of your events, we will match our display with the theme of your event. Please call Bridget on 01945 587723. If you have WiFi available, we can offer visitors to the event help with their family research all for free. Speakers: Two of our members give talks on various subjects to local groups. ‘The Fun of Family History.’ ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza.’ ‘The Angels of St Clements Church.’ ‘Jane Davyes, a Much-Married Lady.’ ‘The Ups and Downs of being a JP.’ ‘The Sad Tale of the Blacksmith’s Family’. Skaters Roller Rink in Wisbech has been in business for over thirty years, run by Michael McInerney (owner) and his three managers - Gary Evison, (Rink Manager), Amanda McGurk, (Finance Manager) and Dee McInerney, (Cafe Manager). Mike leased the building in February 2014 before purchasing it in May 2018. Mike is a Junior European Inline Speed Skating Champion. Achieving this in 1987, aged fifteen, Mike took home seven medals, (a record which still hasn’t been broken!) He still competes today, now forty-six years of age. Last month, the club attended the British Outdoor Championships in Birmingham and returned with four British Champions. This is a huge achievement for a small Fenland club operating out of an indoor rink in Wisbech. In total, eleven gold, fourteen silver, and ten bronze medals were brought home.

Lyncroft Residents, Ray and Mary Chapman, Celebrate Sixty-Eight Years! In early June, Lyncroft Care Home in Wisbech had the absolute pleasure of hosting a very special party for two of their residents, Ray and Mary Chapman, who were celebrating their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary, surrounded by family, friends, staff and residents. During World War Two, Ray and Mary began communicating as pen pals, and by the time they came to meet, on Ray’s return, they were very close friends, and soon began courting. In March 1950, it was Mary who got down on one knee to propose marriage, after a romantic evening at the pictures. On June 3rd, they married at West Walton Church in Norfolk at 3pm. It was a terribly thundery morning, but thankfully the rain cleared to make way for the sun, which stayed out all afternoon. A year later, their son, Peter, was born, who was to have two children of his own, so Ray and Mary are now proud grandparents to Vicky and James, and also great-grandparents to Isabelle and Jasmine. For most of his working life, Ray was a gardener and caretaker at the local upper school, where Mary also worked as a cleaner, after having worked on the land.

It was after a run of bad health that Ray arrived at Lyncroft Care Home, on January 19th 2018, and Mary closely followed, a month later. Since becoming residents, they have become the life and soul of the home, interacting with everyone and taking part in most of the activities made available. Mary especially enjoys it when the children come in from Wisbech Day Nursery on Friday mornings. They have lots of friends and relatives that frequently visit, and Ray loves to discuss ‘all things gardening’. Ray says, “We like being part of Lyncroft Care Home. We felt welcome from the day we arrived, as it felt like a home from home. All the staff are friendly, happy to help and nothing is too much trouble. We are both very happy here.”

Lyncroft Care Home

Lyncroft Care Home provides a loving, family environment, in which staff are fully committed to providing long term care for our residents. Set in large gardens,Lyncroft Care Home has 39 ensuite rooms and provides personalised residential and dementia care.

Island Hopping in The Caribbean

By Ellie Cuthbert

Marketing & Admin Assistant

Interested in exploring the Caribbean islands but don’t want to cruise? Well island hopping has never been so easy! The Caribbean has over twenty island nations, all of which are unique, offering something new to see and do. Antigua and Tobago are fantastic options for island hopping, being only an hour’s flight apart and offering one of the most interesting twin centre holidays in the Caribbean. Antigua is great for the perfect beach stay with its 365 beaches, meaning you’ll never be more than a few minutes from clear blue waters and gorgeous white sand. While exploring this beautiful island, you must visit the local picturesque villages and sample the fresh tropical fruit. Tobago on the other hand is full of wildlife, with a rainforest known to be one of the oldest in the world. Filled with vibrant birds, exotic fish and a laid-back Caribbean vibe, you will feel totally relaxed on this stunning island. Every year, Tobago hosts The Festival of Lights – a Hindu celebration boasting an extravagant light display. Tobago also holds the Trinidad and Tobago carnival, which has been hailed the largest in the Caribbean, featuring some of the most colourful costumes, music and dancing that the Caribbean has ever seen. If you’re looking for a Caribbean experience to remember, Tobago is the place to go. Another great option for a Caribbean twin centre is Barbados and Grenada, again just an hour apart. Barbados is a great

all-round destination, with its white sand beaches, beautiful resorts and delicious Caribbean food. If you have a passion for cricket, golf or diving, you will fit right in with the locals who are mad for sports. Grenada is an ideal location for the adventurous; the island is covered in dense forest and mountain terrain, perfect for hiking and seeking out wildlife. It’s also famous for its underwater scenery; Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park is one of the first to have underwater concrete figures - a spectacular sight. If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay, Sandals Resorts is a popular operator of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Each year they hold a 2 for 1 sale, giving you the chance to secure a luxury holiday, without the luxury price tag! Every Sandals resort sits directly on a stunning beach, each with its own unique luxury experience. They also offer innovative over-the-water villas, a first of its kind in the Caribbean.

Willow Hair and Beauty Our Journey We are a young, creative Hair & Beauty Salon with a difference. We’re based in Wisbech Cambridgeshire and this is our story... Willow Hair & Beauty was founded in October 2016 by nail artist, Lucy James. The concept of the salon is to unite a team of talented young creatives who really specialise in their chosen area. They come together to work under one brand – Willow. In just one year our aspiring team has grown from two members to eight and it covers a wide range of treatments including: Nail Artistry, Nail Enhancements, Hair Extensions & Services, Lash Extensions, Lash Perming, Brow Maintenance, Spray Tanning, Digital Brows, Microblading and Makeup. The Salon Our shabby chic salon is a warm, friendly, eclectic, funky and most of all welcoming

space; our clients are always tellling us how much they love the design! Summary Thank you! We were so proud to be nominated for Best Beauty Salon 2018 in the English Hair & Beauty awards where we were placed in the top ten for East Anglia. In a small town like Wisbech it can be hard to start a business and trust that there will be enough custom and that people will come, especially with high street shops being empty - but we are here and we are going for it!

“Willow Hair and Beauty is located in Wisbech, a small rural town full of hair and nail salons and charity shops. But do not be fooled; this salon could sit proudly on any high street and still stand out from the rest. From the moment you enter, you can sense a welcoming atmosphere and a quirky style. The shabby chic interior is coupled with state of the art treatments and equipment. I have been having my nails done with Lucy, the salon owner, for years. In the relatively short time the salon has been open, she has transformed it from an empty old office building, to one filled with vibrant staff and a unique interior. The salon is constantly evolving and it’s wonderful to see the ideas Lucy’s brought into fruition. You might easily be forgiven for thinking this is a salon that would only appeal to the younger generation as quite often this is the case. However my hard of hearing mother of sixty eight also comes regularly to get her treatments done and is always made to feel welcome and loves her chats with the young team. I would not hesitate in recommending Willow Hair & Beauty to anybody, and I am very thankful to have such a wonderful asset so close to where I live.” Laura Dewhurst

JULY NEWS & UPDATES - By Steve Barclay MP

T

his year sees the celebration of 70 years of the National Health Service and as Minister of State for Health, July 5th, 2018 is a hugely important milestone across the NHS family. Over the last 70 years, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation by delivering huge medical advances and improvements to public health. It is thanks to the NHS that we have all but eradicated diseases such as polio and diphtheria, and pioneered new treatments like the world’s first liver, heart and lung transplants. The NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.5 million staff from all over the world and more than 350 different careers. None of the achievements over the past 70 years would be possible without the skill, dedication and compassion of NHS staff, as well as the many volunteers, charities and communities that support the service. This year has seen my Read to Succeed Campaign go from strength to strength. Now in its third year, it is fantastic that local businesses, councillors and residents continue to support local school children so generously. I first launched the campaign in 2016, after teachers raised their concerns that many children did not read during the summer

holidays resulting in a dip in literacy skills after they returned from the summer break. The initiative, supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers and businesses, ensures that every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and treasure during the summer holidays. Year 4 was chosen as this is the age when children often begin to read more independently. I am pleased to report that last year, Cambridgeshire Libraries saw a 50 percent increase in children starting the Summer Reading Challenge – where children have to read a book a week over the six-week break – following our campaign.

Summer, across our constituency, is a busy time for fetes, fayres and galas. These only happen due to the hard work of the many local volunteers. A big thank you to everyone who helps out, and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many events I will be visiting over the summer. With two young children you will probably see me in the queue for the face painter!

Dare-devil Ed’s Sky-dive for a Worthy Cause To leap out of an aircraft the day after your last GCSE exam might not be on the top of the wish-list for most teenagers – (the day before your first one maybe!) However, when you feel so strongly about a volunteering organisation, whose work is aimed at supporting youngsters just like yourself and your friends, then, for sixteen-year-old, Bourne Academy student, Ed SabertonWard, it was just a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

of volunteers and who employ trained counsellors to support young people, aged between 11-16 years, facing emotional difficulties. Common problems which they encounter include family and relationship difficulties, issues regarding loneliness and anxiety, problems associated with low self-esteem and bullying, self-harm, abuse, addiction, distress through bereavement or loss, depression and difficulty with decision-making.

So, on Saturday June 16th, at Sibson Airfield, Ed undertook the perilous journey from uncertainty, through apprehension to eventual, total exhilaration, as he leapt from 10,000 feet, in order to raise over £500 in sponsorship. After his sky-dive, Ed was, for once, almost stumped for words as he tried to express just how brilliant the whole experience had been, (even the bit when his

School News PECKOVER Peckover Primary School is sprucing up a neglected plot of land as part of the BBC series, ‘Britain in Bloom’. A film crew has been visiting the school to capture how students, staff, and parents are transforming a patch of ground into themed ‘outside classrooms’, including a jungle area, Victorian parterre, and Titanic garden. The resulting footage will be aired next year. The school was asked to get involved by the organisers of ‘Britain in Bloom’ for Wisbech and Principal, Carrie Norman, jumped at the chance. She said: ‘We have an area at the back where parents collect children that is a bit unloved so as we have themed classrooms in the school we are also going to create and theme flower beds there. The overall project will be judged in July, and ‘Britain in Bloom’ will be screened on BBC2 this time next year. We are very excited about the project, and staff, students and parents are all putting time and effort in to make sure this area is as beautiful and eye-catching as possible! The students are really getting involved; we had an army of them here this morning and the parents have been brilliant! Wisbech Britain in Bloom team has cut back all the bushes for us and got us going, it’s been great! ‘We will have a Titanic garden, a Victorian parterre, Percy the Park Keeper’s shed, a World War Two one and a lovely jungle bed with bamboo and jungle grass so the children can experience it for themselves. ‘Each year group will also have a project associated with their garden, for example, making terracotta lighthouses, or painting insects and animals on rocks. The children will help plant the gardens and we want to get them involved as much as possible.’ Mr. Kourouss Oveisi and Nigel Hawkins were among the team of parents who came along to help out. They worked for hours, shovelling gravel into wheelbarrows. Kouross said: ‘I heard about the project and wanted to help out. It is about making a difference to the school.’ Nigel added: ‘We come up with a pushchair every day and sometimes it can get boggy in the wet weather so this is a way to help the school and make it look nice.’

He is a member of the Norwich City Academy and he plays regularly for their U15 team. His school are understandably, incredibly proud of Lewis who has worked hard to balance his academic work alongside playing for Norwich City. He has also managed to fit in playing rugby, hockey and cricket for the school, as well as competing for the county athletics team.

This is a tremendous achievement for the Wisbech St. Mary starlet, who will be 48

School News MEADOWGATE The Sixth Formers of Meadowgate Academy have been very community minded, with three initiatives that support our local area. The Academy has a nationally recognised Police Cadet group that meets weekly and who have been cleaning up the locality and spending time with elderly residents of a local care home. They also take part in training, based on the regular Police Force; a recent highlight was helping to train sniffer dogs at the Queen Mary Centre. They have also undertaken first aid training and visited the cells at Wisbech Police Station. The second initiative is the Meadowgate Squad. This is a newly formed student group that

undertakes community volunteering once a week. Students have supported the playgroup at the Salvation Army centre; have sorted donated clothing ready for a table-top sale at the QMC and prepared vegetables to make soup for the homeless shelter at the Ferry Project. This has increased the communication skills, interpersonal skills and basic confidence levels in these young people, while helping those outside of the school. It also gives the students a taste of different workplaces that can inform their own choice of careers in the future. We hope that this initiative will continue to support our wonderful local community groups in the next academic year. Finally, the Sixth Formers have created Meadowgate Melodies – a 15-student-strong choir designed to uplift and build confidence within the group as well as perform to local residential homes and at local events. We are preparing for our first performance, which will be at the Rose Fair.

‘Crowded Room’ by Tim Mann - The Boat House, Wisbech Review by Aldo Ierubino, Art Historian How many sitters are required to create a portrait of Wisbech? For the artist Tim Mann, the answer is as many as 10,000. The problems presented to us by contemporary art, particularly concerning its appreciation and interpretation, may cause us to ignore significant work that has been created in our very midst and which seeks to represent the image of our community. It is easy to see why, at first glance, the multi-panel mural created by Tim Mann, which represents more than 10,000 outlines of Wisbech residents, evokes the standard response about contemporary art: what is it? At the material level, it is five panels that make up a seven - metre mural, upon which a range of pastel colours has been organised; in other words: an abstract work of contemporary art. However, this begs the question, once again, which is that expression of viewer bemusement: what is it and what does it mean? The problem with the question, and any attempt to answer it, is that it is tantamount to standing in front of Monet’s substantial panoramic paintings of his garden at Giverny, (the ‘waterlily’ paintings), and questioning why he bothered to devote so many years of work to produce mesmerisingly huge canvases depicting his garden pond, when a single modest canvas or even a photograph could have achieved the same thing. The only satisfying answer to this question calls upon the role of the artist in choosing to present us with an artistic statement that causes us to take notice, question, evaluate, and share in the experience, (visual or

54

D I S C O V E R I N G

Wisbech

otherwise), of the world around us. Tim Mann’s work achieves this objective: it is a ‘portrait’ of Wisbech expressed through artistic means, conveying the shared experience of the community. At the purely visual level, it is an elegiac evocation through colour and line as well as the suggested form, of the character of Wisbech at the centre of the Fens. The pastel outlines of those 10,000 individual participants, majestic in their primitive form, rising from the bottom of the panel towards the expanse of pale blue colour above, suggest through simplified form, the ancient Fenland landscape, where reeds rising from the water, sway in the breeze under a ‘big sky’. At the narrative level, it has an almost mythical power to suggest the relationship between the land, the water, and the sky, which has characterised this part of England from time immemorial. This is the same landscape of the early Britons, of the Romans, of Boadicea, the AngloSaxons, of King John, of Hereward the Wake, of mediaeval farmers and shepherds, of Cavaliers and Roundheads, of merchants, sailors and bankers, of revolutionary ideas and nonconformists, of patronage and great wealth; in short, the vibrant heritage of the Fens. At the artistic level, it can do all of this because the artist has acted as the bridge between the sitters/ participants and the surface of the work that he has created, which ultimately embodies all that they represent. This truly is a portrait of Wisbech whose meaning is validated by the participation of more than 10,000 of its residents.

History

Bishop's Wisbech? - How Wisbech was shaped by the Church by Roger Powell, Wisbech Society, Vice-Chair

About 1000AD, Aelfwin entered the abbey of Ely as a monk, and his parents, Oswy and Leoflede, presented the vill (a parish or manor) of Wisbech to the abbot and convent of Ely as a gift, and so began five hundred years of Church control over the town. From Domesday Book, (1086), we learn that the manor produced 1,500 eels annually and that two fishermen within the vill paid the bishop 13s 4d a year as well as 14,000 eels. A later document lays out the tenants’ duties, which include providing a boat to convey the bishop to his palace in Somersham. There were also positive aspects to being a tenant; in 1190, Richard I granted them freedom from paying tolls in any market in England. When the See (an area of a bishop’s ecclesiastical jurisdiction) of Ely was created in 1109, the area was divided in two, with the manor of Barton going to the bishop and that of Murrow to the abbot. Probably in about 1215-9, Wisbech Castle was given to the bishop and replaced Barton Farm as the headquarters of the episcopal estate and the administrative centre of the town moved south of the river. The castle covered a large area from Bridge Street in the north to Love Lane in the south, and the outer line of its forty-foot-wide moat may be seen in the curved building line at the north-western corner of the Market Place. This makes it one of the largest areas covered by a castle in England, and a feature that helped to shape the town’s layout, with the new market at its walls for people to sell goods and to congregate.

56

D I S C O V E R I N G

During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, a number of guilds were founded in Wisbech, of which the most important was that of the Holy Trinity. As well as its religious duties, it was given more secular functions, such as flood protection, by the bishops. Therefore, when guilds were dissolved in 1547, it was a natural step for the chief officials of the Guild to be made the Capital Burgesses (the forerunners of the Borough Council) and so the running of the town became secularised. In the mid-fifteenth century, the west tower of Saint Peter’s church collapsed. This would have been the natural entrance from the castle across the drawbridge in what is now Museum Square. However, when the present tower was built in the next century, it faced towards Little Church Street. This possibly led to the location of the Guildhall of Holy Trinity and would thus form a processional route to the church. Therefore, this change in alignment marks a change in the pattern of town government. The location of the Guildhall, however, is uncertain, but if it were in Hill Street near to the old Grammar School, then there might have been a cluster of guild halls in that area. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw a decrease in ecclesiastical influence on the town. First John Thurloe and then Joseph Medworth made their impact on the town, the former with the building of his mansion, (1656), in the grounds of the original castle and the latter with the building of the Crescent along with his own ‘Villa’ and Castle Lodge, (1816). In the nineteenthcentury population growth led to the creation of the new parish of Saint Augustine, and the building of the

Wisbech

Octagon Chapel on the Old Market, which brought a place of worship to the virtually godless northern part of the town. It was the Reverend Fardell who, in two ways, reversed this secularising trend. As chairman of the Isle Quarter Sessions, he might be said to have reasserted clerical judicial authority and by building a new vicarage with extensive grounds to have recreated the bishop’s palace. Also, by consecrating Tillery Field, off Church Walk, as a cemetery he created a new church area within the town. Thus, the appearance and layout of Wisbech owe a considerable amount to the influence of the Church. The presence of a bishop’s palace in preReformation Wisbech surely supports the town’s right to be known as Bishop’s Wisbech, perhaps more than King’s (formerly Bishop’s) Lynn?

History

Discovering... The Old Market Diane Calton Smith

any English towns are proud to be mentioned in the Domesday Book and Wisbech is certainly one of them. Our history goes back much further than that, though. The town can trace its origins back to when the Wash came in almost to its doors, to its days as a Saxon hamlet of wildfowlers and fishermen. This tiny settlement on the western bank of the Wysbeck River was first referred to in a charter of AD664. Situated in the area of the Old Market, early Wisbech would have been little more than a huddle of singleroomed houses of timber, mud and thatch. Life in these tiny, dark homes went on around the central hearth fire, smoke from which drifted upwards to escape through the thatch. Nestled among the village houses would have been the church. Christianity had come to Saxon England in a big way by that time and holy men in search of a life of prayer and contemplation were drawn to the great, marshy wilderness of the Fens. Monasteries had been established at Crowland, Peterborough, Thorney and Ely. Small, timber-built churches were becoming a part of every settlement and were much more than simply places of worship. They were centres of the community, used as meeting halls as well as law courts, where the head of the

58

village would dole out punishment for every wrongdoing. No settlement would have been complete without its barns, stables, kitchen gardens, animal pens and workshops, and with all the activity going on, as smiths, cobblers, weavers and carpenters busied themselves in their workshops, there would have been constant bustle and noise. Open fields, and the common land used for foraging and wildfowling, lay beyond the village. The fields were divided into narrow strips and ploughed with huge iron devices pulled by six or eight oxen. The grain harvest was vital to make coarse bread which, together with fish and eggs, formed an essential part of the diet. Little has survived from those times, but two decorated circular Saxon brooches have been unearthed in recent times close to the Old Market. Clearly the work of a skilled craftsman, these small items offer us a glimpse of the sophistication of the people who once inhabited our town. Nowadays, elegant Georgian buildings hint at the Old Market’s long history, but its Saxon origins are certainly its best-kept secret. juLY 2018

Wisbech Rose Fair This year’s Rose Fair at St Peter and St Paul’s church runs from July 4th to July 7th and celebrates its 55th anniversary. The theme for the Flower Festival is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Today St. Peter and St. Paul’s church is famous for its magnificent flower displays and is recognised as the Premier Flower Festival of East Anglia.

The Parish Church of St. Peter & St. Paul

There will be approximately 40 stalls selling a variety of goods from fruit and vegetables to cosmetics and toys. There are tombola stalls and cards, locally grown strawberries, vegetables and plants. There are numerous venues for refreshments; many of the churches serve light refreshments and there are other cafes and restaurants around the town. In St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church Hall you will find ‘La Vie en Rose Cafe’ with waitress service, morning coffee and biscuits, set meals at lunchtime and afternoon teas. Self-service refreshments are also available in La Vie en Rose so all tastes are catered for. At the Museum Square, local schoolchildren entertain the visitors with their singing. The Museum is offering objects for handling, and is hosting Wisbech Arts Club’s summer exhibition. Wisbech Round Table organise floats, each year, and local schools, businesses, and organisations dress the floats. On Saturday there are two parades one at 11am, the other at 2 pm. The theme this year is ‘The Love of Music’.

Floral displays in the church and craft stalls in the church gardens. Lunch and afternoon tea served in the church hall. Your generosity helps to maintain our church.
