Welcome to your February issue...

eing a leap year makes 2024 particularly significant, especially if you’re that lady wondering if “he” will ever get round to the customary getting on to his bended knee and slipping that engagement ring on to your finger! Ladies, remember that you can beat him to it on February 29th this year… fellas, watch out! We’re only just into a new year but we’re already hearing that 2023 was the hottest on record. Thinking of extreme heat brings me neatly on to dear old St Valentine, whose day we celebrate this month. May the happiness resulting from sharing those flowers, perfume, chocolates and so much more (hint, hint, Chris!) with a loved one remain, even when things might get a bit tricky in the future… especially when the snow, and even more heavy rain, comes along to spoil our fun!

Claire x

Like most people, I have a daily routine and mine includes walking my dog early in the morning. Whatever the weather, we are out of the door shortly after 7am for a four to five-mile hike around town. As part of our daily walk, we invariably meet up with the usual suspects who share our determination to take to the streets come rain, wind or – very rarely – snow. However, two things have become apparent recently. One, there are a lot of fair-weather walkers who are easily put off by inclement weather, and two it is gradually but reassuringly getting lighter in the morning. I dress very much for the weather on our daily excursion and recently this has meant that I have started to wear a ‘hoodie’ to save my ears from freezing off in the sub-zero temperatures. It keeps me warm but makes me look like a ‘Mad Monk.’ However, frankly I don’t care as I can’t stand wearing decent clothes and getting them soaked or dirty when out with my four-legged pal. As for my walking companion, he always looks great in his sleek black suit...

Recipe

Handmade Truffles Ingredients Makes about 15 truffles 2 double chocolate chip muffins 2 tablespoons of chocolate hazelnut spread 1 handful of raisins or sultanas A few drops of water Coloured sugar sprinkles or your preferred choice of decoration

4

What better way to say ‘I love you’ than with chocolate?! With this super-easy recipe, you can make your own gorgeous chocolate truffles which you could then pop into a box or jar and tie with a ribbon for a lovely, handmade gift!

Method • Crumble the chocolate muffins (about 125g/4oz) into a large bowl, then stir in the chocolate hazelnut spread. • Add the raisins or sultanas and a few drops of water to create a crumbly mixture. • Squeeze teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and then roll the balls in the coloured sugar sprinkles. These will keep for about five days in an airtight container, if kept at room temperature.

Food & Drink

Here for the Beer:

STROUD BREWERY

T

he Gloucestershire market town of Stroud and the areas surrounding it attract visitors all year round. The Cotswold area is known for its outstanding, picturesque, natural beauty. History tells us that Stroud had woollen mills that were powered by the surrounding rivers, which flowed through the valleys, and Cotswold sheep supplied the wool. During the 19th century, Stroud was well-known for its industrial and trading connections. Some former working mills now offer guided tours. The Walled Garden attracts visitors, as does the Farmers’ Market and the local brewery. Eateries and restaurants provide local, organic produce, incorporated into numerous, very popular dishes. Multi award-winning Stroud Brewery (Est. 2006) is renowned for the productions of exceptional organic craft beers and is now one of Stroud’s major attractions. Their beers include ranges of core, specials and more. TOM LONG (3.8% vol) is a popular organic amber bitter beer – Smooth, malty and citrusy. HOP DROP (4.5% vol) is gluten-free. This much loved, organic pale ale production, I recognised as fruity and hoppy, plus citrusy. BUDDING (4.5%

vol) comes across (to me) as floral and zesty, for this organic, pale ale production.

By Trevor La

ngley

If a stout is required, then BIG CAT (4.5% vol) organic stout does not disappoint in any way. Rich, with chocolate overtones, makes this a very popular selection for stout lovers. ALEDERFLOWER (4.9% vol) organic pale ale, I found to be crisp and with floral notes - another, hugely popular production, from the Stroud Brewery Company. If low alcohol is for you, then EASY PEASY (2.6% vol) organic pale ale ‘ticks many boxes.’ This ‘session ale’ has a floral bouquet and is citrusy, to satisfaction, with flavours from organic elderflowers and lemons. The outstanding efforts and achievements of all staff at Stroud Brewery, are very much appreciated and recognised now further afield, as the word spreads about this exceptional beer producing company. Please view their excellent and very informative website for all details and information. Online ordering is available and easy, and it is most worthy of a visit and highly recommended. The Healing Power of Sound

S

ound healing, an ancient practice that has gained popularity in recent years, harnesses the power of sound vibrations to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. This article delves into the fascinating world of sound healing, exploring its origins, techniques, and the numerous benefits it offers. The Origins of Sound Healing Sound healing has roots in various ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and indigenous communities. These cultures recognised the profound effect of sound on the human body and used it as a therapeutic tool. From the rhythmic beating of drums to the soothing chants and mantras, sound was believed to balance energy, restore harmony, and facilitate healing. How Sound Healing Works Sound healing utilises different instruments, including singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, and the human voice, to produce specific frequencies and vibrations. These vibrations interact with the body's energy systems, such as the chakras and meridians, promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and the release of emotional blockages. The sound waves also induce a state of deep relaxation, which allows the body to activate its natural healing mechanisms. The Benefits of Sound Healing Stress reduction – sound healing helps to reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and calming the nervous system. Pain management – the vibrations produced during sound healing sessions can alleviate physical pain and discomfort. Emotional healing – sound healing can facilitate the release of suppressed emotions and trauma, allowing for emotional healing and a sense of inner peace. Improved sleep – the soothing sounds and

vibrations aid in improving sleep quality and addressing Susie Munn sleep disorders. Enhanced s meditation – sound healing can deepen meditation practices, helping individuals achieve a state of heightened awareness and connection. Sound Healing Techniques There are various sound healing techniques, including individual sessions, group sound baths, and sound therapy workshops. During individual sessions, a practitioner tailors the experience to the individual's specific needs. In group sound baths, participants lie down while being bathed in the sounds and vibrations of various instruments. Sound therapy workshops often provide education and practical tools for individuals to incorporate sound healing into their daily lives. Sound healing offers an holistic approach to overall wellbeing, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of an individual. With its ancient roots and numerous benefits, sound healing continues to gain recognition as a powerful modality for self-care and healing in the modern world. Sound Healing in Whittlesey Why not come along to one of my ‘Sound Baths’ or ‘Meditation Evenings’ and experience the healing power of sound? I will guide you in a chakra balancing meditation, then bathe you in the relaxing, healing sounds of crystal singing bowls, drums, chimes, and gong. Everything is provided for you for your comfort and ease. Sound baths are every first Tuesday of the month from 10am-11am, Meditation evenings are the third Monday of the month from 6.30pm-9pm. DAWN LAUNCHES NEW

Pet Project Whittlesey and the surrounding areas have a new artist in town with years of experience who is taking the plunge to follow her dreams.

G

orgeous George Studio, born out of Dawn’s passion for animals and photography, opened its doors this year in a photography studio where her clients’ comfort and experience come first.

The studio welcomes your pets and their individual needs. She says: “We aim to get to know your pet and owners so that we can offer the best experience and photographs for people to treasure forever.”

Gorgeous George Studio specialises in pet photography and is a local new business. Dawn has thirty years’ experience in the photography industry.

Dawn commented: “Our packages are priced to reflect the quality of our service but are also good value for our customers. The options for packages are clearly displayed on our website and we are always happy to chat them through with you.”

Having worked commercially including portrait, wedding, landscape and pet photography, Dawn says photography remains a constant passion having taught for twenty years, from adult education in the community, through to sixteen-eighteen-year-olds, and hopes to start small group workshops in a variety of photography skills, along with art printing workshops.

20

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea

When you arrive, Dawn will spend some time just getting to know your pet, chatting and letting them get used to the studio space. Once they are happy, your shoot starts for about an hour (breaks can be used if your pet needs some time out) in the studio with a range of props and backgrounds, aiming to get the perfect shots.

The studio is really comfortable, with places for owners to sit if they’re not in on the action too, and because Dawn uses the latest topend equipment, there are no wires and cables getting in the way. If you’re looking for something for yourself or as a gift, give Dawn a call on 0776 2789494 or check out www.gorgeousgeorgestudio.co.uk for contact details. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

were a shining success!

The Whittlesey Town Lights Committee has passed on its thanks for all the help and support it received during 2023. A big thank you was sent to Whittlesey Town Council; Whittlesey Charities; McCain Foods UK for the donation of the fabulous Christmas tree with a special thank you to Melanie Camps for ensuring their continued support; A1 Fencing and Whittlesey Engineering who supplied new fixtures and fittings for the display; everyone that sponsored a Roundel on the Market Square again in 2023; and all the other businesses, offices and shops that support us in so many different ways. The committee was most grateful to the general public for all the generous donations made throughout the year, calling it a “brilliant effort”. There was also praise for Wayne Gale from Fenland Electrical and the team of volunteers for the set-up and takedown again this year. Members are all very proud of the town’s light display and look forward to the public’s continued support for 2024. Finance

2024 FINANCIAL CONCERNS By Eamonn Dorling

O

ne of the most significant issues will probably involve Artificial Intelligence (AI). The subject covers a diverse range of issues and in varying amounts. For example, we are familiar with simple aids like predictive text, maps and navigation, face recognition, e-payments and social media algorithms.

The scary applications can involve a convincing video of someone apparently saying something they did not say, evidence that is invented and the replacement of jobs that were once thought impossible to emulate by a ‘machine’. So, our employment could be threatened, and the consequences could be severe if an untrue declaration is perceived as accurate. On the other hand, if solutions to problems can improve the accurate diagnosis of a disease or lifestyle without added cost, that could be attractive. Self-driving vehicles could be a reality as early as 2025 or in twelve years – it depends on who you believe! To a certain extent, some vehicles on the road can now drive themselves; they are

prevented from doing so by legislation, and their powers are restricted to specific areas – a great deal of additional infrastructure needs to be provided. With all this uncertainty, it is even more critical to have financial plans that embrace change but will be sustainable if things go wrong. We are unlikely to know what the future will bring, but setting goals and timescales and agreeing on acceptable parameters is a good starting point as we head towards an uncertain future. Some of the jobs that our children and grandchildren will do have not even been invented yet! But that need not stop us from planning for the future as best we can. RED LETTER DAYS FOR CHILDREN Organised by Fenland Youth Radio for a third year during December, six additional Santa post boxes were to be seen at the four primary schools, Whittlesey library and Kellyvision giving children the opportunity to post their letters to Santa. A record 223 children took up the opportunity with each and every one not only receiving a Christmas Card from Santa but also having their letter read out live on air on Fenland Youth Radio. Organiser and FYR presenter Robert Windle was delighted with the response and thanked Kellyvision, the library, Discovering Magazines and Whittlesey Sports Association for sponsoring the cards. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: I am writing this as the flood waters are rising and the East Delph B1040 to Thorney and the North Bank Road are both closed owing to the torrential rain we have encountered over the past weeks. In some respects, I think we should count ourselves lucky. In other parts of the country, hundreds of homes and businesses have been flooded. At this point, we need to thank our local Drainage Boards who work tirelessly to ensure we keep safe. It will take a while for the floods to recede and everything to get back to anything like normal. I am just hoping that we now don’t get snow which is forecast. Just had today’s weather described as Baltic – a good description and not far off. Let’s get onto more pleasant things... On Tuesday, January 9th, I attended the first Heritage Talk at Childers in Whittlesey. Presented

FREE EXERCISE, WELLNESS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITY SESSIONS Free exercise, wellness and social activity sessions including wellness kickboxing, walking basketball and tea dances are on offer in Whittlesey and throughout Fenland. The sessions are all offered and supported by Fenland District Council’s Active Fenland, which secures grant funding to provide opportunities for people to live more active lives. Whittlesey events include:

by London Brick archivist Andrew Mortlock, it was fascinating; what Andrew doesn’t know about the various brick works and workings that have existed and continue to exist in and around Whittlesey really isn’t worth knowing. The next talk will be delivered by local historian Maureen Watson on February 6th at 6pm at Childers. Maureen’s presentation is entitled ‘What you might not know about Whittlesey’. I’ve already got my ticket; have you got yours? The talks are free to attend and are available on Ticket Source. That was followed by the Straw Bear Festival over the weekend of January 12th-14th. I had the privilege of seeing the Bear begin the parade from the Manor Centre. Another splendid turn out. We thank the organisers for their commitment to the event. The festival dates for your diaries for 2025 are Friday, January 10th, Saturday, January 11th and Sunday, January 12th. The next town council meeting will be held on Thursday, February 22nd commencing at 6.30pm. Please note that all future town council meetings will begin at this earlier time of 6.30pm. ‘Til the next time. Kay Mayor or fear falling are also due to come to Whittlesey. Details to be confirmed. • ‘Pre-fit’ activity sessions for people who have noticed they are limiting their activity or have stopped doing the things because they are getting more challenging. At Manor Leisure Centre, Station Road, Whittlesey PE7 1UA. Tuesdays, 10am-11.30am. £3 per session, book and pay at leisure centre. Except where stated, Active Fenland sessions should be booked in advance via: www.fenland.gov.uk/activefenlandbookingform

• Free Whittlesey Wellbeing Walk, every second and fourth Monday of the month, 10am from the Buttercross, Market Street, around an hour at variable but usually slower pace. Your Garden

L

et’s hope that your allotment or vegetable patch has had time to dry out so that you can prepare the beds ready for sowing in March.

Warming up the beds will pay dividends by using cloches, straw-based mulches, or plastic sheeting. If you have clay soil, spread a mix of organic matter and grit over the surface and dig it in to open the structure; avoid treading on the soil especially when wet, by laying wooden planks to walk on, or even consider creating raised beds. Make sure that you have got all your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. One vegetable that will be more flavoursome if kept in the dark is forced rhubarb. Once you see the crowns starting to develop, choose a well-established crown, remove any debris or leaves, add a layer of mulch, and then cover with a bucket or large pot without any holes (cover any holes with black tape.) You can increase the heat by mounding compost or manure around the pot. It should be ready to harvest in 7-8 weeks when the stems are 45-50cms long. Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

30

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea

• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground and then mulch. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant; any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Sow seeds indoors: tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, Brussels, sprouting broccoli, spinach. The main problem at this time of year is a general lack of light, so a cheap solution to prevent leggy, drawn seedlings is to cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil and place it to the north side of the seed tray, thus reflecting extra light onto the seeds. • If the weather allows, you can start a composting trench for your runner beans, courgettes or pumpkins. Mark out the area you will be planting and then dig a trench 60cm deep which you can then start to add layers of organic kitchen waste, covering each layer with soil.

Happy digging!

Consumer Advice

Don’t Let the Scammers Steal More Than Just Your Heart This Valentine's Season! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key time for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart. ‘Romance fraud’ is one of the top five most reported scams to Action Fraud, and involves people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. Now comes the timely reminder to people who may be looking for love to be extra vigilant, taking measures to ensure their ‘perfect match’ is really who they say they are. In the last financial year, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) received 8,036 reports of romance fraud, with an average loss per victim of £11,500. Men make up 53% of cases and the 65 to 74 age group is the one most likely to be targeted. One of the most high-profile cases is that of Vicky – a victim of Emmanuel Scotts, a convicted, serial romance fraudster who scammed four women out of more than £320,000. In November 2022, Scotts was sentenced to twelve years behind bars. Vicky explains, “They look for your weaknesses and mine is my son and not having his dad around. He made a point of being interested in everything my son did. He praised me constantly on what a great job I was doing, bringing him up on my own, telling me he wanted to take care of me.” Scotts befriended several women on an internet dating site and, after gaining their trust, he persuaded them to “invest” savings and returning small sums of “interest” to extract more money. How to stay safe from romance fraudsters: • Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online. • Be cautious about how much information about yourself you are sharing online and who you are sharing information with. • Speak to your family or friends to get advice. Fraudsters will subtly isolate you for their own purposes. • Profile photos may not be genuine. Performing a reverse image search can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone, else. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. BRINGING CULTURE TO FENLAND... By Steve Barclay MP

W

e have some great examples of culture and heritage in the constituency – magnificent buildings, innovative arts groups and some supremely talented individuals. However, we’ve long recognised that Fenland has lower cultural engagement than it might and there’s more that could be done to support opportunities for local communities and residents to access high-quality experiences. That’s why I’m delighted to see nineteen organisations were successful in gaining support for their activities from the Fenland Cultural Fund. Up to £23,000 was available with arts organisations and individuals able to bid for up to £2000 to progress creativity and cultural offerings to new audiences, drive increased engagement, and build on existing talent. I’m greatly encouraged that forty-two groups submitted bids to the fund and a second round is due to be launched later this year. In a similar vein, I’m looking forward to seeing who the next Fenland Poet Laureates are. The deadline for entry was the end of January and this year, the sixth annual competition, is sure to see some amazing talent championing both poetry and the area we live in. Meanwhile, a series of free heritage talks being held across the constituency are well underway. Thanks to funding from the Government to Arts Council England, the events are designed to promote local historical awareness and provide an opportunity for residents to get together and socialise. Whittlesey talks will be given by London Brickwork archivist Andrew Mortlock and local historian Maureen Watson; Wisbech talks are by local author and historian Diane Carlton Smith; Chatteris talks are by former councillor Alan Melton; and the Friends of March Railway Station will lead the March talks. Tickets are available to book now: Whittlesey: February 6th, March 5th; Wisbech: February 13th, March 12th; March: February 20th, March 19th; Chatteris: February 27th, March 26th. There’s just time to get your nomination in for the Pride in Fenland Awards. Over the years we have heard some inspirational stories and had worthy winners and I have no doubt that once again we will be amazed and grateful to recognise

the people who are heroes in their communities. The closing date for nominations is midnight on February 11th. Nominations can be made online at www.fenland.gov.uk/prideinfenland or printed forms can be found in the Fenland Citizen. It was a pleasure to visit Online Playgrounds in Christchurch to help them celebrate thirty years of trading. They are one of our local success stories, helping put Fenland on the map internationally by exporting to the Middle East, USA and Australia. One of the challenges we face as an economy is to get more businesses to think about exporting further afield and what Online Playgrounds has achieved reflects the work that goes on here day in, day out. Online Playgrounds started as a farm diversification project and makes timber playgrounds on-site using traditionally skilled craftsmen and the latest technology, as well as being the UK supplier for the Danish Ledon steel play equipment, and the go-to website for multibrand spare parts for all types of playground. What they have achieved is something quite notable. Finally, the Energy Secretary of State has until later this month to make a decision about whether to allow an enormous incinerator to be built in Wisbech. I have been against these incinerator plans from the very beginning and will continue to campaign against them. The Planning inspectorate has submitted its recommendation following the public examination last year and in January the Secretary of State issued a letter to various parties asking for further information. The impact of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of non-recyclable municipal and commercial and industrial waste being brought to Wisbech each year would be huge. I will continue to do all I can to oppose it. Photo: Steve Barclay MP with Andrew Sparrow, Online Playgrounds Group MD

Valentine’s Day What’s That All About Then?

W

hen February 14th comes along, we can expect to exchange messages of love through thoughtful cards, flower bouquets, perfume, jewellery, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. But why do we celebrate Valentine's Day in the first place, because it hasn’t always been a celebration of love?

Who was St Valentine? At least two men named Valentine could have inspired the tradition. One Valentine was a priest in third century Rome who defied Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage (he thought it distracted young soldiers), illegally marrying couples in the spirit of love until he was caught and sentenced to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape prison in Rome, and that he was the first sender of a “Valentine” message himself while imprisoned, writing a letter signed “From your Valentine.”

46

In the 1300s, it officially became a holiday associated with love At the end of the 5th century, Roman Pope Gelasius officially declared the date of February 14th “St. Valentine's Day.” It wasn't until the Middle Ages, though, that the holiday became associated with love and romance, a tradition that first started from the common belief in France and England that birds started their mating season on February 14th.

The first Valentine was sent in the 15th century The oldest record of a Valentine being sent was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. One of the lines in the poem read, “I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine,” penned while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, aged just twenty-one. People were exchanging cards and handwritten letters to both lovers and friends during the 17th century, but it was in the 1840s that the first Valentine's Day cards were first mass-produced.

However…

Flowers…

Although some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called “Lupercalia,” which was celebrated in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility!

The tradition of giving Valentine's Day flowers dates back to the 17th century, but the act of giving flowers then became a popular trend during the Victorian Era, including on Valentine's Day, with red roses symbolizing deep love.

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea

…and Chocolates! The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861. It was created by Richard Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder, John Cadbury, who started packaging chocolates in fancy boxes to increase sales… and the rest (as any dentist or dietician will tell you) is history!

INVEST IN A WOOD BURNING STOVE AND SAVE MONEY For the savvy homeowner, a wood burning stove isn't just a source of warmth – it's a strategic investment that translates into tangible savings on heating bills.

W

ith rising energy costs, modern stoves offer an economically sound alternative with low fuel consumption, efficiently converting wood into warmth.

At a time where environmental consciousness is paramount, wood burning stoves can provide both low-cost and low-carbon heating. Modern stoves adhere to stringent environmental standards, with significantly lower emissions than older stoves and up to ninety percent less than open fires, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. To maximise the efficiency and environmental benefits of a wood burning stove, it's crucial for stove users to adopt responsible practices, ensuring the sustainability of this age-old tradition. Properly seasoned wood, optimal burning techniques, and regular maintenance are all key factors. Wood burning stoves can be cosy, cost-effective, and conscientious. Environmental responsibility doesn’t have to sit on the back burner.

The atmosphere at both sessions will be warm and welcoming. “We’re constantly looking for opportunities to take sessions out to all parts of Fenland and would encourage all residents to check the Active Fenland web page for details of new and existing sessions across the district.” The new Forever Fit sessions launch at Manor Leisure Centre, Station Road, Whittlesey PE7 1UA started with a free taster session on Tuesday, January 16th.
