Welcome to your December issue... A

very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2021.

As a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on what has been another particularly challenging year for many. Mass vaccinations against COVID-19 have certainly slowed down the pandemic’s deadly progress, and we have managed to return to a form of normality. Next year may even see some of us searching for our passports and getting stir-crazy in airport queues again! Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2022 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

A traditional Christmas looks like it’s back on the agenda this year after the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic hampered last year’s celebrations. Families and friends will hopefully be able to join together for the festive season following the success of the national vaccine roll-out. Last year’s festivities were naturally subdued, with a lack of pre-Christmas get-togethers because of the local lockdown, however this year it seems likely that things will be more like they were pre-pandemic. I hope this seasonal issue helps put you in the mood for the holiday period as we bring you all the latest news and offerings from the local community. We always strive to give you the best possible publication each month, but to do so we need your help, so please continue to keep us informed of your activities in the New Year. So, on behalf of all the team at the magazine, enjoy your Christmas and New Year celebrations, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you again in 2022…

FESTIV E

Mulled Wine

This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!

Method

• Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick.

Ingredients Serves 6-8 people

• You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time.

2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 2 tsp mixed spice 8 tea bags 2 whole cinnamon sticks

4

D I S C O V E R I N G

• Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.

Top Tips

4 tsp whole cloves

150g semi-dried prunes

• Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates!

• You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy. • A white wine version is also an option, if your guests are not red wine lovers.

Your Garden

December Gardening Tips

W

e are approaching the shortest day and moving towards the months that bring the worst weather for the gardener.

Weather predictions for this winter are influenced by La Nina and show that we may be in for a cold December, with persistent snow. Time to sit back with a warm toddy and plan next year’s crops and reflect on what went well this year. Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. You can harvest lots of vegetables for Christmas plates, including parsnips, leeks, and winter cabbages, all of which can be left in the ground until you need them. It is difficult to harvest crops from frozen soil, so if temperatures plummet, cover the soil with straw. Harvest Brussels sprouts when they are around one inch in diameter, before they ‘blow open.’ Pick them from the base of the plant up, twisting them away from

18

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

the plant. If you have grown potatoes for Christmas, they should be ready now. Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen. • Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for, and repair, any holes. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR As I write this month's article, my wife Ann and I have just returned from a very moving ceremony at the American War Cemetery at Madingley where the dead of past conflicts have been honoured on Armistice Day. We will again be representing Whittlesey this coming Remembrance Sunday at ceremonies in Coates and Eastrea in the morning and Whittlesey in the afternoon. Cllrs Ray Whitwell and Bob Wicks will be similarly honouring the dead at Pondersbridge and Turves respectively on behalf of Whittlesey Town Council. In addition to remembering recent history, I feel it is important to celebrate our heritage in and around the town and villages. For this purpose, for the past three years Cllrs Alex Miscandlon, Eamonn Dorling and myself have been planning a heritage centre and I am pleased to report that, with the support of Whittlesey Town Council, Fenland District Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, funding has been secured for this project, and land gifted by Forterra on the edge of the Kings Dyke Nature Reserve has been earmarked for development. An experienced team consisting of a project manager, architects and landscape designers, quantity surveyors, civil engineers, electrical and mechanical engineers has been assembled to deliver the project. Formal planning permission will be sought and the centre is targeted to be delivered late in 2022. Whilst the idea of a heritage centre was first inspired by the Must Farm Bronze Age findings, the finished product will indeed be a celebration of Whittlesey and in the coming months Whittlesey Town Council will be consulting with the Whittlesey Museum on how the centre can support the museum and produce interesting material that will attract visitors to the town and strengthen the local economy. It is also recognised that the centre will be a facility for local school children to learn of their heritage and for the nature reserve itself to be given a greater profile.

Whilst looking back at the past it is imperative that we consider the future and, with this in mind, the heritage centre will be designed to be eco-friendly and as near to carbon neutral as can be managed using the latest available technology. Finally, whilst looking to the future I was delighted to attend a ceremony at the new bridge being provided by Jones Bros. over the Kings Dyke railway line where two time capsules were buried with the help of children from New Road and Park Lane primary schools. A variety of articles relating to Whittlesey today was buried for future generations to explore in due course with I trust considerable interest. May I wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2022, reminding you all if you can, to attend the Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza to be held around the Buttercross on Saturday, December 11th from 3pm onwards. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

DOMINO’S OPENS IN WHITTLESEY Fund-raiser Deborah Slator was guest of honour at the official opening of Domino's Pizza in Queen Street, Whittlesey. Defibrillators For All benefitted by the store’s opening as it received £1 from every order made, from the opening date of November 16th until November 21st. Photo: courtesy RWT Photography

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades ‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill and the long-awaited chance to spend it with family and friends, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. The past months may have changed our shopping habits, as many of us now favour buying our goods online, but it has also seen the scammers becoming more sophisticated. Protect yourself from falling victim to online shopping or auction fraud: • If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead. • Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives. • Make sure you have a strong password for your email. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by 15:38 double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in. • Be extra vigilant using Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree as these are also on the hit list for criminals. At home, seasonal security is essential: For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins, are rich pickings. Remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • Consider fitting motion detector security lighting. If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are out, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden. If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com. DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 1

Swim

WITH THE WHITTLESEY MANOR DOLPHINS

S

wimming is a fantastic fitness activity for all children but is often overlooked as a great way to improve and maintain a good level of fitness as well as being a very important lifesaving skill.

So, if you may have learned the basics of swimming and now want to improve the way you swim, why not join our local swimming club? Whittlesey Manor Dolphins Swimming Club meets at the Manor Leisure Centre every Monday during term time and offers a fun and friendly environment to improve your swimming technique, keep fit and make new friends at the same time. The club is open to anyone who can swim at least twenty-five metres or is a Swim England level 6 or above.

Swimming under the supervision of one of our qualified coaches means that you can build on your swimming technique and develop into a confident swimmer. Unlike some sports, swimming is a year-round activity and is not reliant upon the weather conditions! The club is non-competitive but holds a sponsored swim as well as a Gala each year. It also helps swimmers work towards Duke of Edinburgh awards as well as GCSE or A Level qualifications. Coach Kevin Sansby commented: “The Gala event is a great way to celebrate the success of all of our swimmers and it’s fantastic to see all of our members cheering each other on during the evening. The Gala is followed by a presentation evening, held locally where all of our members get the chance to meet up and reflect on how they have all progressed over the last year.” The sponsored swim sees members swim anything from one length up to two hundred lengths to raise money towards running the club including the purchase of new equipment. As well as being what could be considered to be an essential skill, improving your swimming style, strength and stamina could be a great introduction to water sports in later life including scuba diving, snorkelling, open-water activities and sailing. So, take the plunge (pardon the pun!) and get in touch with the club today by emailing manordolphins@gmail.com

I am not offering a specialist remedial massage for sports injuries, although that may be something for the future, but a way to help people relax and feel physically more comfortable.” Father-of-two Garry is offering the service to males from a studio at his home but said he may offer a mobile service in the future. Health

Enchanted Aesthetics . . g n i c u d o Intr Hello, my name is Sapphire Barron, and I am an advanced aesthetics nurse.

H

aving previously worked in nurseries caring for children with additional needs and in care homes, I knew that I wanted to develop my career further. I found it incredibly rewarding to be able to support individuals and families through times of need and I really understood the importance of care and compassion, having been through my own personal traumas. So, it felt natural for me to choose to complete my degree in paediatric nursing. Throughout my life, I have developed a passion for raising mental health awareness. From a young age, I noticed a lack of mental health support within our society, and I wanted to be part of changing this. So, I decided to apply for a job in children’s mental health where I currently work, alongside my aesthetics business. I decided to set up my aesthetics clinic as I was missing the clinical side of nursing. As a teenager, I suffered from severe cystic acne and bullying which had destroyed my confidence. Receiving emotional and physical treatment made a huge difference to my mental health which led me to want to support others in developing their own confidence enabling them to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

My ethos I do not believe in making people look totally different, but I do wish to help enhance their own natural beauty or reduce any areas of concern, so

that they can feel more confident.

Self-esteem begins from the inside and, whilst aesthetic treatments can certainly give a confidence boost, they are not the answer to more deep-rooted insecurities. This is where my mental health and nursing background adds huge value to my service. It is important to me that my service is never just about the treatment itself. It is about providing expert, safe, and compassionate care for the entire patient experience - to feel good about themselves from the inside, as well as from the out.

Beware: if you are considering aesthetics treatments Aesthetics treatments are certainly increasing in popularity. Unfortunately, there are a lot of practitioners who are not providing a safe service, mainly because of poor training. My aim in these monthly articles is to help educate the public so they feel more knowledgeable and confident about aesthetic treatments, should they wish to book in for one. The first steps, alongside doing your own research, are knowing what questions to ask your practitioner, so next month I will consider these questions and the ‘need to knows’, so that you can feel confident you are choosing a reputable, safe and competent practitioner.

STAY SAFE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON By Steve Barclay MP

A

s we head into the festive season and start making plans to spend Christmas with families and loved ones, I very much hope that this year will be a celebration.

For many, the last twenty-or-so months has been a long, hard road and the national lockdown surrounding last Christmas was fraught with difficulties as families had to forego their usual festive reunion in order to keep safe in the midst of the worst pandemic in living memory. With some time still to go before Christmas and the very real presence of coronavirus still active in our communities, I hesitate to say that this year we’ll be back to normal. But I believe we’ve come a long way in our battle with this virus and our phenomenally successful vaccination programme puts us in a very different place to last year. However, I would urge everyone to do what you can to keep yourselves and your families safe – from booster jabs to continued handwashing, we can all take action to make this festive season as safe as possible. Getting out and about in the community over the last month, it has been great to see some of the results of the hard work that has continued quietly during the pandemic. It was a real pleasure to open the new look March Community Centre, which is a fantastic resource and will provide much valued support and new skills for local people in a fun, modernised, bright and fast internet-connected building conveniently located a short walk from the centre of town.

looking into the strengths of the area and what we can build upon to attract investment. Together with Fenland District Council, I’m working with leading national marketing firm, “thinking place”, in an exercise designed to help support plans to develop a Levelling Up Fund bid. “thinking place” has helped areas like Lowestoft and Hull transform their success rate in securing government investment. We are competing with other towns across the UK for investment and while there is much locally to be proud of and we’ve already made progress in securing investment in a number of areas, we can do more – and working together with clarity on how we want to communicate the potential of our area is key. Finally, I wanted to reassure you regarding my continued campaigning against the enormous incinerator proposals for Wisbech. I have written to the chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate to highlight the lack of response by developer MVV to the expert report I had commissioned on behalf of local residents in response to the consultation. The report identifies inaccuracies and misleading information that was presented in the consultation, with a lack of detail in multiple areas, including the adverse effects of the scheme. This incinerator will have an unimaginable impact on our area and the local community deserves a response. Photo: Steve Barclay, MP: opening March Community Centre

I’ve also been lucky enough to visit businesses and places across the country as part of my role in government, including at COP26 in Glasgow and the site of the new government hub in Peterborough. I hope you had the time and opportunity to feed into the focus groups and public workshops

The Value of a Thank You any of us are taught from an early age the importance of good manners and saying thank you. This may be to show our appreciation to someone who has done something that has meant a lot to us. It could be as simple as they’ve shared their sweets when we felt the need for a sugar fix or alternatively, we recognise they’ve had a profound effect on our life and we want to express our gratitude to them.

I often think about those who have had a positive influence on my life over the years, teachers, people in the church, managers at work, and in my case my Girl Guide Captain who when I was just fourteen years old believed in my ability to be a patrol leader. This boosted my confidence no end as I was battling with an extremely poor selfimage at the time. November has Remembrance Day where we take the time to reflect and thank those in the Armed Forces who sacrificed everything for our freedom. The Bible says in Psalm 136: Give Thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love endures forever. In fact, it

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH reminds us twenty-six times in that one Psalm that God’s Love is unchanging, unconditional and never-ending and that for me is something I will be eternally grateful for. With Christmas fast approaching, the preparations for giving and receiving of presents will be in abundance. We would like to encourage you to take time to remember the real reason to be happy during this festive season. That is the birth of our dear Lord Jesus Christ who came to earth as a baby, sent by God as a Saviour for you and me. You’re warmly invited to our Christmas celebration service on Sunday, December 19th at 10.45am. Marija Lysak (Assistant Pastor)

Pensions Remain Tax Efficient By Eamonn Dorling

P

reviously we have considered the potential impact of tax relief on pension investments being changed (and not for the better!). There were fears that the Chancellor might have reduced allowances in the recent autumn Budget, but this has not happened.

Most of us understand that tax relief on pension contributions can increase the contribution so that the amount invested is greater than the payment. However, a well-informed independent financial adviser would check out individual circumstances against the qualifying criteria and help maximise any potential gains that can be made. Once the benefits are accumulated, there are tax-efficient ways to draw down benefits that range from tax-free lump sums to regular taxfree or taxable income with clever balancing of allowances and spreading across tax years to minimise tax exposure. For many, the aim is to retire before the state pension age by drawing down from pensions or other investments. This is where cash flow modelling becomes a valuable tool to highlight the probability of success, or what actions need to be taken to achieve the things you desire at the earliest opportunity and provide peace of mind, knowing that a long retirement is affordable. Pension benefits need to pay for all those essential expenses, the ones you could live without but prefer not to, and those little luxuries you have worked hard for. Delivery

of pension income could be from guaranteed lifetime arrangement, such as the State Pension, fixed-term or lifetime private or workplace pensions, or maybe flexible drawdown – which allows you to take the benefits when they will do the most good. A combination of these can be a great way to manage the financial challenges of retirement. My simple message is that, as soon as you desire to take control of your retirement planning, get a plan put in place. This is because, unless you are fortunate, there will be some effort required to provide an income higher than state benefits. If in doubt, contact an independent financial adviser. Another reason to support our High Street this Christmas BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

A

s Christmas closes in on us, and many are suffering financially after a couple of tough years, I wanted to just remind you to make sure that any electrical things you buy meet British standards. It can sometimes be tempting to buy things online that are better priced than those that are on our high street, sometimes even knowing that they are not genuine or that they may not meet British standards. I have often been asked to fit or look at electrical items that have been bought from bargain priced websites. Some of the things I have found have been dangerous; we have even written reports to help the buyer recover their money but, unfortunately, this is often unsuccessful. We have been asked to fit lights and the most basic

Domestic

principles of the electrical safety regulations are not even met, and what starts as somebody trying to save some pennies ends up costing them much more when they are unable to return the item and then still have to purchase it somewhere else. This is actually the ‘best-case scenario’; the other scenario is that that item is used without any concerns being identified, and then resulting in an electric shock, or even a fire that devastates your home. We can so easily be pulled into trying to save money as expectations are so high for Christmas today, but it is much more important that you and your family stay safe. So, shop safe this Christmas and make sure that everything you buy meets British safety standards. Finally, a reminder to please make sure you enter our Christmas Lights Competition! Details and categories are on our social media channels and website.

At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.
