Eat the Season

Apple, Pear and Walnut Crumble Method 1

Heat oven to 190˚C/Fan 170˚C/Gas 5. Put the chopped apples, lemon zest, rosemary, if using, and sugar in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice and cook for 3-4 mins. Tip in the pears and cook 2-3 mins more, until the fruits are just beginning to soften. Spoon the fruits and juices into a 1.7 litre pudding dish and flatten slightly.

For the crumble, finely chop half the walnuts in a food processor until reduced to the consistency of ground almonds. Add the flour, butter and sugar and continue to blitz to a coarse or fine crumble mix, whichever you prefer.

Roughly break the remaining walnuts with your fingers and stir into the crumble.

Scatter the crumble mix on top of the fruits and bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown.

Serve warm with cream or custard.

Eat the Season

Baked, Stuffed Courgettes Courgettes filled with a tasty rice, tomato and minced lamb stuffing make a meal that the whole family will love. Serves 4.

Method 1 Heat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6 (180°C for fan ovens).

Cut each courgette in half lengthways and scoop out the pulpy centre with a teaspoon, leaving an outside shell. Reserve half pulp, and chop lightly. Brush the courgette skins with half the olive oil and place them cutside up in a shallow roasting tin. Season and roast for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook the rice in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 12 minutes until just tender. Drain, allow to stand for 5 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes, egg, mint, and season to taste. Set aside.

Add remaining oil to a heavy based pan and fry the lamb over a medium heat until browned. Drain off any excess fat.

Add the onion and garlic, cook for a further 5 minutes until the onion has softened. Stir in the passata, reserved courgette pulp and rosemary. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Stir in the rice mixture and mix together.

Spoon the stuffing mixture into the courgette shells and sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until golden on top.

Serve immediately.

The Right Fit

It’s that time of year when parents are buying new school shoes. There are also things that adults should know when buying new shoes and when thinking about the fit of their existing shoes.

Shoes can either help with foot problems or have the potential to cause foot problems. Footwear affects the way we walk, therefore if we walk unnaturally, for whatever reason, it throws out other joints in the body and can cause pain and rubbing, resulting in corns or calluses.

If shoes are fitted by professional shoe fitters in childhood (and preferably throughout life) and advice taken over the years, it can really help to reduce problems and pain. Here are some simple tips to remember when buying shoes, and when checking that your existing shoes still fit correctly.

The size of your feet changes continually; you stop growing at around twenty-five years old, but your feet can still become wider with age.

Ideally, you should measure your feet before every purchase, or at least once a year.

It’s pretty normal to have one foot slightly larger than the other, so make sure you get the size closest to the larger foot; (it’s better to be a bit bigger than a bit smaller!).

What you’re really looking for is a nice tight fit around the heel of your shoe. You don’t want your shoes sliding up and down your ankles, as this can cause serious problems in the long run.

Try to get something snug.

4 Ideally, there should be about half an inch, or 1-1.5cm, between your longest toe and the inside of the shoe. This isn’t always the first

toe! Another great way of telling whether they fit is to slip your index and middle finger down the back of your shoe. Do they fit comfortably, or do you really have to push them in there? If you do, maybe you should look at going up half a size.

The last point to consider when you’re getting your shoe fitting done, and probably the most important, is that if they don’t initially feel comfortable, they probably won’t ever do so. ‘Wearing shoes in’ is definitely not the best way to go about buying a new pair of shoes – if they’re not comfy, move on and find a new pair!

Wear the correct socks – No thin or fine dress socks for athletic shoes. Make sure your socks match each other, are the correct size and have no visible holes. You need to ensure that they fit well so you don’t have to spend the whole day pulling them up. A good pair of socks shouldn’t just absorb sweat, but should distribute perspiration through the material to the outer surface, which is an actual process called wicking. The sock should cushion the foot from impact with the ground, and prevent the skin from rubbing against the inside of the shoes.

Bacteria: Our Friend and Foe A strange relationship exists between us and bacteria. On the one hand, we are constantly trying to kill them, and on the other we cannot survive without them.

No matter how much we clean ourselves, we will always have bacteria living on and inside of us.

We have an interdependent relationship with them, meaning that we provide a suitable environment for them to live, and in return they perform jobs for us. We cannot do these jobs ourselves, and thus we cannot live without them, and they cannot live without us.

Despite this, we are competing all the time for space. Our immune systems (and various other body mechanisms) are in place to keep the bacteria population under control. Failure to do this means the bacteria will run riot, multiply and take over our bodies. This is why, for example, we have the urge and desire to wash. Our brains are in tune with our own scent and can identify when we smell and need cleansing. A large proportion of our scent, as you are probably aware, is due to the size of the bacteria colony living on our skin.

However, being too clean can also have its problems. We see this amongst those who suffer with obsessive compulsive disorders, who may wash four or five times a day, brush their teeth multiple times, and so on. The consequence is that various bacterial colonies are destroyed, and so the jobs they perform – which our bodies cannot do alone – go undone.

Bacteria also keep our immune system strong. The greater the exposure to bacteria, the stronger our immune systems are. All systems in our bodies work on a simple principle: the greater the exposure to a stimulus, the better we become at adapting to it.

Think of throwing a ball, playing an instrument, or performing your job – the more we do it, the better we get. The same applies to our immune system. A hundred years ago we were exposed to thousands of bacteria daily; and thousands of years ago, when humans lived rural and technology-free lives, to even more. Our environments today are relatively sterile in comparison, and our exposure to bacteria is relatively low, so our immune system gets lazy.

Our weakening immune system is one of the many reasons why we are suffering from more coughs, colds and flus. Another reason is our reliance on medicine. Not only is our exposure to bacteria decreasing, but when are immune systems are engaged in fighting an illness, we provide extra help when it is not needed. Would you want somebody reading the paper out loud to you when you are perfectly capable of reading it yourself?

We’re not implying that we should all live in dirty conditions, wash once a week and eliminate medications! What we should do is strike a balance, as both excessive cleanliness and excessive dirtiness weaken our bodies. Giving our immune system a chance to fight the bacteria or virus allows it to grow stronger, and thus reduces the frequency of future illness. Only when our bodies seem to struggle should we consider sending in the second wave: medicine.

The World of Stripes - by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin Wavy stripes add movement to a room. On fabrics, the waves can accentuate the way a curtain drapes. And a colourful wavy design across a large rug adds a wow factor.

Zigzag stripes are fun. They spark up a room’s energy; perfect for a playroom, or even a dining room. We’re perhaps more used to seeing black and white in zigzag form, as the ‘graphic’ trend remains strong, but the effect can easily be softened. Imagine a pale peach zigzag on a cream background or fresh minty green on white.

I’m sure you’ve got some stripes in your wardrobe... a T-shirt, tie, skirt or suit. It takes confidence to wear stripes. You will, no doubt, have chosen carefully to make the right impression, whether your style is a casual, wide blue and white band for a T-shirt or a more formal elegant pinstripe for a jacket. In the home, you should exercise similar caution, but please don’t be intimidated.

Stripes don’t have to be eye-watering. When you look at a striped wallpaper on the roll you might think it’s a bit much. But when it’s up, and you’ve arranged your pictures, hung your curtains, placed your furniture, the pattern is broken up into interesting shapes which make it both easy to live with and invigorating. Be brave, choose what suits your room best – bold or gentle. And if you need a bit of help, get in touch.

They can be thick or thin, evenly spaced or varied, single coloured (monochrome) or multi-coloured. Diagonal stripes make a space feel larger. For example, on walls, a diagonal stripe can ignore corners and carry the eye further along and on floors, tiles set diagonally will stretch the room in all directions.

A Fitness Inspiration at 94 Years Old A sprightly 94-year-old has proved you're never too old for exercise, after being named Member of the Month at a Fenland District Council leisure centre.

Not even three hip replacements and one knee replacement have held back Gertrude Ciabanu, as she attends the New Vision Fitness Manor Leisure Centre, Whittlesey, three times a week.

Now staff at the centre have named Gertrude as their Member of the Month for August.

Gertrude, who started out just using the pool with a friend, has been going to the centre for over twenty years. She began using the gym some fifteen years ago when her husband showed an interest, and they attended together for many years. Now, despite the loss of her husband and the operations to replace her hip and knee, she still attends three times a week at 6.30am.

Joking that she was ‘flavour of the month’, Gertrude said keeping fit helped her to keep a youthful outlook on life - and her tip to others was to “keep going as long as you can”.

Bernadette Gipson, Duty Centre Manager at the Manor, said: “Gertrude is a true inspiration and proves you’re never too old to enjoy fitness. She is a very social person who enjoys a chat, and is interested in people and life in general. So if you do see her in the gym, please say hello!”

New Restaurant Celebrates Local Daredevil On the first floor of The Broadway Theatre, which reopens in this month, you’ll find Walter’s Bar and Eatery, a new restaurant named after an iconic Cambridgeshire strongman. Local legend Walter Cornelius came to England from Latvia in the 1940s, and died in 1983.

He was well known around the Peterborough area for his fearless escapades (such as walking on his hands for 153 miles, or pushing a double decker bus for half a mile with his head) and breaking over fifty world records. He raised a fortune for various good causes, and his celebrity status was cemented via appearances on the likes of Blue Peter and Opportunity Knocks.

Open every day from early morning until the twilight hours, and with ambient live music between noon and 3pm, the restaurant promises to provide the perfect atmosphere for those at work or play.

Mark Ringer, Managing Director of The Broadway, said: “Walter used to be a concierge at The Broadway when it was an Odeon cinema.

When I went to see films way back when, he was the one who made sure we behaved ourselves!”

Another feature of the restaurant will be the ‘Cornelius Banger’ – a signature snack sourced from local suppliers, supplemented by onions prepared via a secret recipe. Alex Geairns, Station Director for Hereward Media, who is assisting with marketing for The Broadway, commented: “Walter won the ‘World Sausage Eating Championship’ in 1966, devouring twenty three bangers in ten minutes.”

“In another mammoth feat, he ate 3lb 8oz of raw onions in two minutes and two seconds. While the ingredients in our dish won’t be raw, they’ll certainly be unusual, mouth-watering and delicious!”

Another Successful Year for Coates Village Show

The 2017 Coates Village Show was another resounding success, raising around £450 and culminating in the annual Citizen of the Year award being given to its youngest recipient to date.

The show has been running in its current format for over ten years, with a Village Show competition in the morning and a family fun day in the afternoon.

This year’s show, which took place on July 15th, saw over two hundred items entered. The overall winner was announced as Sharon Weston – for the second year in a row.

The family fun in the afternoon was organised by a team of people from the Friends of Holy Trinity, Coates, and KingsGate Church, Peterborough. This partnership meant the ever-growing show encompassed not only Holy Trinity and its grounds, but most of North Green too. The free bouncy castle and face painting were very popular with the children, while the Whittlesey Cycle Club was a hit with motorcycle enthusiasts. The falconry display, kindly donated by Ye Olde Redtail Falconry Display, was one of the highlights of the afternoon.

After the show winners were announced, the final award of the day was presented – the Coates Citizen of the Year. In recognition of her charity fundraising efforts and selfless commitment to others, the award went to Yazmin Hills.

Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017.

In November last year, Yazmin donated some of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, who produce real hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Yazmin went one step further and had the remaining hair shaved off to help raise money for a close family friend, Cody, who has a very rare condition which means he cannot talk or eat solid foods.

The £3210.81 raised by Yazmin was used to buy a specialist pushchair for Cody, and the remainder of the money is being put towards converting the family’s small back garden, so that Cody can have some independence in a safe, controlled environment.

Your Garden

September Gardening Tips Nights are starting to draw in and, with the shorter days, there’s less time to spend on the allotment or vegetable garden.

Growth is slowing down now and hopefully you should be able to get on top of the weed growth.

Also, although September can be a warm month, watering should be less of an issue. Needless to say, there will still be plenty of jobs to do!

Early crops are coming to an end now but there are still autumn fruits, maybe French and runner beans, courgettes, sweetcorn and tomatoes; there may even be some early leeks or Brussels sprouts that might be ready for picking. Make sure that you lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days, and check that they are fully dried out before storage; any damaged potatoes should be eaten first and not stored with the good ones.

As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there’s not much that can be done. You can still sow rocket, spinach, oriental salad leaves and winter lettuces. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature, and they protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. Now is the time to plant overwintering onions, which will be ready for lifting in June next year, and also garlic – buy your garlic bulbs from a garden centre rather than trying to plant bulbs from the supermarket as they may not be disease-free. Spring cabbages can be planted in their final positions, but it is wise to cover them in netting to keep the birds and other pests at bay.

As the summer harvest comes to an end, there will be plenty of plant debris which can be composted ready to condition the soil next spring. Check that it is not diseased. Also, any crops that are still in the ground should have dead or yellowing material removed, as this can harbour diseases that thrive in the damp conditions.

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter.

Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation – leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Sow ‘green manures’ such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug in the ground next spring.

As we come to the end of summer there’s plenty of work still to be done to keep our lawns looking great in the months to come. Sisters Sarah and Jo, who run our local GreenThumb lawn care business, give us some top tips.

Sarah and Jo are on hand to give advice on fairy rings, toadstools, lawn pests and brown patches on lawns which can appear at this time of year and they provide a free lawn analysis service for anyone who wants help with their lawn.

Here are Sarah and Jo’s top tips for keeping lawns in good condition and managing moss as we head into autumn.

1) Rake up and remove falling leaves regularly A carpet of leaves will smother your lawn and starve it of light. This causes the grass to weaken, and disease and moss will invade.

2) Continue to mow your lawn The idea that you shouldn’t mow your lawn over the winter is a myth, so on a dry day give it a cut on a high setting. Grass left to get too long will be weak and slow to dry, which then attracts moss.

3) Scarify your lawn Rake out dead matter such as grass clippings, leaves, roots and old moss. Scarification is the name given to removing this ‘thatch’ from the lawn #2448-Peterbrough-190x135-from15-V7-T2-B3-P2-02aug17-PRINT.pdf with a machine, and it’s best to do this over the

coming months and before next spring. “When we scarify a lawn we rake up and bag all the rubbish, and for a small charge we can take it away for you. We like to make lawn scarification completely hassle-free for our customers.”

4) Apply a feed and moss control Use a micronutrient autumn/winter feed that will give a stronger, greener and more robust lawn.

“At GreenThumb we use a treatment that also dehydrates any moss that may have built up, helping to control it by slowing down its activity.

One or two of these treatments over the damper months of the year is ideal.”

Matters Funding Success for Local Referees

Peterborough Referees' Association has been successful in its application for funding to assist referee development in Fenland. The Association’s training and development arm, the Peterborough and Fenland Referee Development Scheme, has been awarded potentially up to £4,200 to go towards equipment and coaching time in five local schools, ending with mini festivals for its players with referees drawn from that area.

The fund accessed is the Burnt House Wind Farm Fund, based in Turves, which is managed by the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. An initial down payment of £2100 has been received, with the other half to come in October if the project proves successful.

The project’s emphasis is on fair play, respect and sportsmanship. Each participating school will now receive a bag of ten footballs, bibs and cones, and will get regular visits from PRA members, beginning in September. Other equipment such as pull up goals, first aid equipment and a PA system will complement the sessions, giving the students the best experience possible and raising the profile of the role of the match official.

Peterborough RA Chairman Rob Windle was delighted that the trial scheme last year swayed the judges, and that serious money will now benefit the Fenland and refereeing communities.

Don’t Miss the Tenth Whittlesey Festival!

With just days to go before the tenth annual Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 10th, excitement is building as the Market Square and surrounding areas prepare for the buzz of the day.

The day kicks off at 9.45am with a spectacular musical parade from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. We’d love as many people as possible to line the streets as the parade makes its way to the Market Square, where the official opening by the Deputy Mayor of Whittlesey will take place at around 10.15am.

The air will be filled with music, song and dance as a full programme of activities takes over the town centre. Musical offerings include the Cockney Pride Pearly King and Queen and their band from London, the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corp and the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band, who will also perform a combined band finale at 3.30pm, just prior to the close of the Festival at 4pm.

Children can enjoy free (or subsidised) rides and amusements, puppets shows and face painting, and there are numerous stalls for you to visit.

Take a walk back in time with a display of over one hundred vintage vehicles, many of which are unique to this event, and marvel at the talents of local students in the Schools Art Exhibition, held in Whittlesey Christian Church. New this year are free puppet workshops in the church’s marquee on the Market Square - places are limited, so make sure you register your details early!

This really is a day not to be missed. After all, where else can you find free musical entertainment, children’s attractions, numerous stalls, a classic car display, a World War Two flypast and so much more all in one location?!

We really hope you can join us on the day. With so many people and groups from the local and surrounding communities joining together, we are confident this will be an event to remember.

A Huge Thank You from The Hermitage!

A simple ‘thank you’ is not nearly enough to express the gratitude of everyone at The Hermitage for your continued support and generosity of our car boot and fundraising day. This year’s event was held on Saturday July 15th, and on the whole the weather was once again very kind to us.

The day was another huge success for the home, and everyone involved had a really enjoyable time. To top it all off, we managed to raise an incredible £2505.00!

This money helps to fund outings such as rides into the countryside with afternoon tea, trips to garden centres, meals at Wetherspoons and other local cafes, as well as lots of in-home entertainment.

This includes Bingo, performances by singers and musicians, Easter bonnet-making craft days, Zoo Lab (who bring small animals into the home for the residents to hold and pet) and lots more.

The residents are always the first people to find out exactly how much money has been raised.

Such is their excitement, they won’t go into tea until they know!

Essentially, whatever the residents ask for, we do our utmost to make it happen for them. Once again, we’d like to say a very big thank you for your kindness, because without your generosity this annual event would not be possible.

Jenny’s suggestion was a night in the church, and after much discussion the members agreed. On July 28th, they turned in with their air beds, blankets, funny costumes and, of course, teddy bears – not to mention essential supplies of tea, coffee and lots of biscuits.

Sleep was not easy for some, due to the strange noises coming from other members, but all lasted from 9pm to 8am, when the more intrepid of the group decamped to the George Hotel for breakfast.

St Mary's Church, Whittlesey, is in need of funds to fix a leaking roof, remove a large amount of pigeon filth from the spire and bell tower, and carry out other essential maintenance work. The small church committee decided to raise some additional cash to help with this work – but how?

When Chairman Jenny Parker suggested a sponsored sleepover, the committee members immediately thought of comfy beds in an en-suite bed-andbreakfast somewhere… but Jenny had other ideas!

The Court of Protection - by Harleen Hanson

The Court of Protection is a relatively new addition to the English legal system, having only been created following the introduction of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. For many years, the workings of the Court have been a mystery, but this is changing due to growing awareness of its role and increased reporting of cases.

The Court of Protection is applied to, usually as a last resort, where loved ones have lost their capacity to manage their financial affairs and to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

In such cases, where the individual is no longer able to execute a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), someone would need to be appointed to manage their affairs. Currently, the only way to do this is for that individual’s friends, family or professional advisers to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the individual’s deputies.

The process is costly and lengthy with a number of documents having to be drafted, information collated and Orders served. The average cost for a deputy application can be in the region of £1600. This includes the Court fee, the Doctor’s fee for issuing a document confirming the individual’s lack of capacity, and also the legal costs for actually making the application. There is also a form of insurance that needs to be paid for by the deputy, referred to by the Court as, ‘the Bond’.

The Court will continue to be involved, even after the appointment of the deputy, and may require annual reports or ad hoc applications for matters such as, for example, the sale of the individual’s home. All of these will involve additional cost.

For many people, making a Lasting Power of Attorney may seem a preferable option. This is not, however, the case for all, as there will be individuals who do not have anyone they would feel comfortable appointing as the attorneys, or

otherwise burden with the role. In these cases, individuals may appoint a professional attorney under a Lasting Power of Attorney or simply do nothing at all. If the decision is to do nothing, and that individual loses capacity, it will be for the Court to determine who is appointed and, in certain instances, if there is no-one who wishes to do so, then Social Services will step in.

The Court of Protection is also involved in protecting the Donor (as they are referred to in an LPA), where there have been Lasting Powers of Attorney executed, but there is a suggestion that the attorneys have not been acting in the Donor’s best interest. The concept of acting in the best interest of the individual is something that is central to the role of the Court of Protection. The Court’s role is not only to protect the Donor against the negligence or mismanagement of their affairs by their attorneys, but also to support attorneys where they are being falsely accused and, in certain instances, providing them with general guidance as to their role.

Finally, the Court is also becoming involved in decisions relating to an individual’s health and welfare. Certainly, at Fraser Dawbarns LLP, we have seen an increase in the Court’s involvement in decisions relating to matters such as the contact, that persons who lack capacity, have with others, for example family members, and also in relation to matters such as Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

What is clear, is that both the role and scope of the Court of Protection are increasing over time.

Of All the Computer Shops in All of Peterborough...

Those of you who know me well will remember that when I opened my computer shop in the office at 9 High Causeway last year, it was because I thought I had recovered sufficiently from my strokes and, for me, it was the final stage of my rehabilitation in getting the old grey matter working a little faster and better.

But what you will also know is that I had just extricated myself from a ‘not very happy’ relationship and, unequivocally, was avoiding any future relationships like the plague. Then, on August 26th, a customer came into the shop to have her iPad repaired. She stayed for a chat for at least half an hour, smiling, laughing and telling me about her job as a pre-school teacher.

For the next few days she called at the same time on her way home from work each day, to find out how the repair was going, staying for half an hour then leaving to catch her bus to Eastrea. Despite replacing the screen, I was forced to tell her than her tablet was beyond economic repair, and I thought our daily meetings were coming to an end.

Two days later she was back, asking me to obtain a replacement tablet for her, and asking if she could pay weekly – a service I offered then, and now. Little did I realise she could easily afford to replace it, and it was simply her ploy to continue calling… a month later, September 26th, we had our first dinner date, and things continued nicely from there!

Anyway, at the time of writing I will soon be shutting the shop for a week commencing August 24th, and flying to Las Vegas to marry at a small chapel on Saturday August 26th.

My apologies for any inconvenience this causes, and I look forward to re-opening on Saturday September 2nd. And the reason for the heading?

Even now, Deborah says to me: “Of all the computer shops in Peterborough, I came into yours – and look what it led to!”

But enough about me, and on to the computer advice. I’d like to talk this month about computer scams. If you get a phone call from BT, Sky or whosoever asking if you have had problems

with your broadband, and could you just check by logging on to your computer, please don’t follow their instructions!

Simply hang up. Don’t call back to check, as they won’t have ended the call and will still be there, keeping your line open with a different person, who will then pretend to be whoever it is you think you are calling.

A local customer was scammed in this way just a few weeks ago. She allowed them to install software on her laptop (Team Viewer), from which they then obtained bank details and emptied her bank account. Working with the bank’s Fraud Office, I was trying to trace back the connections to identify their location, when a destructive virus was triggered, erasing all traces of them from the laptop and then wiping her entire Hard Drive.

Unfortunately, the bank will not refund any money because this person allowed the scammers into her computer. So, just as you would never give your bank details to a stranger over the phone, never let someone talk you in to providing any information about your laptop. If in doubt, call me and I will be happy to advise and help.

Don’t Get Beaten by the Scammers NONE of us like the thought of our friends, family or even ourselves being scammed – and duped into parting with cash or even personal security information.

Rogue traders, hi-tech scammers or cowboy service operators can convince and catch even the most wary of people off their guard; with a cold-call knock at the door or what seems like a genuine telephone call or marketing literature.

Sadly, statistics show that the most vulnerable, when it comes to being duped, are the over-70s in terms of financial loss - to the tune of a staggering £4,500 from a number of different types of scams.

And, according to figures from the Citizens Advice Bureau, people aged between 61–80 are more likely to be victims of investment fraud, with victims losing an average of £10,000.

The same can apply to traders either knocking at the door and suggesting work needs doing to your property, or through leaflet drops. Always check the credentials of traders if you are in doubt, and certainly before you agree to any work and part with your cash.

We recently had a case of a disabled customer who parted with £1,000 cash - half the fee quoted for driveway repairs - to a trader who did half a day’ s work and was never seen again. Attempts to contact him and retrieve the money failed, leaving the customer to face five months of misery before the project was remedied by Safe Local Trades and Yaxley business, Des Watt Roadways.

Our advice to anyone – who is either contacted by telephone, e-mail or in person – is not to be afraid to ask questions and challenge their motives.

News from the Christmas Extravaganza Committee Hello, as you may be aware, at the AGM of the Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza the main post holders all stood down from their positions after many years of hard work and dedication. I have taken on the role of Chairperson, and the rest of the committee is formed almost entirely of new members. We would like to thank the old committee for everything they have achieved over many years of service.

This year’s Extravaganza will take place on Friday December 8th, between 5pm and 8pm, on the Market Square. Regular attractions such as the charity stalls, fire engine and steam roller will all be there, as well as a circus workshop and stilt walkers. Local businesses have generously come forward to sponsor other attractions, such as a photo booth (for which you’ll find a coupon in this magazine nearer to Christmas) and a small crazy golf course, to name just two. Further details will be available nearer the time.

A WORD from the Royal British Legion Around this time every year we begin our preparations for Remembrancetide. We have to check our stocks of poppy wreaths, poppies, pins, poppy boxes and collecting tins, and complete all the documentation required to carry out poppy selling for two weeks in November.

Over forty poppy wreaths are ordered to be laid at our local memorials by dignitaries of the government, councils, military associations and regiments. This is followed by the navy and army cadets, local business associations, clubs and charitable organisations, scouts and guides, and two children from each of our local schools and academies.

We are indebted to a local person who has, for many years, provided a special box for people to place poppy crosses with personal messages at the memorial.

Poppy boxes are replenished, refreshed and made ready. All poppy collecting tins have to be cleaned and resealed ready for distribution to local shops, businesses, pubs and schools. Overall, we place over ninety poppy boxes and collecting tins around our area.

Last year, donations and collecting boxes raised a record total of £6,784.60 in two weeks! We never

cease to be amazed at the generosity of local people when it comes to the Poppy Appeal, and we thank you all. We would also like to thank all of those who give up their time so freely to help us in all weathers each year, and look forward to your support this year.

This year, we start off our fundraising with our annual Band Concert, which will be held at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey on Friday October 27th 2017. Tickets are still only £5.00 per person, and we will be entertained once again by the City of Peterborough Concert Band. Tickets will be available soon from myself, Ray Thrower, or Judy Darby. This is always a very enjoyable and wellattended evening, so please come and join us.

Finally, the Remembrance Parade will take place on Sunday November 12th. If anyone would like to take part in the parade or help with the Poppy Appeal, please contact myself or Judy Darby.

Heritage Open Days

September 7th to September 10th 2017

‘History belongs to all of us!’

Every year for four days in September, places across the country open their doors to showcase their heritage, community and history. Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, giving you the chance to discover hidden places in your area – for free!

From September 7th-10th, you can join over 2,500 organisations and 40,000 volunteers as they celebrate England’s heritage at 5,000 events nationwide.

Here’s a taste of what’s on offer in our area…

Coates Tower Windmill This is a rare chance to view an important 19th Century local landmark not normally open to the public. You’ll be able to see historic records of the mill, view the ground floor and talk to the owner about his ongoing restoration efforts.

Fenland Light Railway, Ramsey Mereside Visit this working steam railway in the Fens, where you’ll be able to ride on a 7 ¼ gauge miniature light railway operation running various locomotives.

Reliving the ‘60s at the Ladysmith WI We’ll be reliving the ‘Swinging Sixties’ with Sue Stephenson at our September meeting. Members will be getting in the groove by dressing in ‘60s style, and Sue will judge our outfits for this month's competition.

Our quarterly Cookery & Craft Competition continues, and September's entries will be bread or rolls for Cookery, and a summer holiday photo for Craft.

We are also planning another lunch outing later in the month, and details will be finalised at the meeting on Tuesday September 12th, at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall. New members and guests are always welcome.

Whittlesey Disabled and Over-60s Club is a small self-funding social club, which runs every other Monday in the St John Ambulance Hall, from 2pm to 4pm. Our members enjoy playing cards, dominoes and Bingo, and chatting with new friends.

We also have a raffle, which is drawn whilst our members enjoy tea and cakes. Occasionally we serve a cooked lunch, which is followed by live entertainment at the club, and organised coach trips are also arranged, where our members enjoy visits to shows, garden centres, shops and meals.

We’re always looking for new members, so if you would like to meet new people and join in our activities, why not join us? We’re holding an open day on September 18th, from 2pm to 4pm, at the St John Ambulance Hall in Plough Road.

Another Successful Show for Motorcycle Club The Whittlesea Motor Cycle Club recently held its ‘Festival on the Green’ event in Coates, which again proved to be a resounding success.

This annual event, now in its fourth year in Coates, continues to grow from strength to strength and attracts not only motorcyclists, but many enthusiasts and local families as well.

This year’s festival, held on July 30th, saw an attendance of over one hundred machines, ranging from vintage, classics and trikes, to modern day superbikes.

The event was once again well supported by local charities, clubs and trades, as well as The Vine public house, the local Women's Institute and many people from surrounding areas. There was an ice cream van in attendance (not just for the kids!) and a burger stall run by the club sold more than two hundred burgers. We have supported many charities over the years, and will continue to do so.

The Whittlesea Motorcycle Club would like to thank all those involved in delivering such a successful and enjoyable day, and look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Whittlesea Motorcycle Club was formed in 2001 with the aim of bringing together like-minded motorcyclists for rides and social events. The club’s members own a cross-section of motorcycles, from the latest sports bikes to old classics.

If anyone with a motorcycle wants to meet us you would be made most welcome. We meet every other week at The Vine in Coates, on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.

Triumph for Thorney Running Club Groups of new runners of all ages can now be seen running through the Fens, thanks to the recent ‘Couch to 5km’ programme hosted by Thorney Running Club.

The ten-week course began with eighty-four participants in May, and culminated in a glorious celebratory ‘Graduation 5km Run’ along the Green Wheel on July 10th. Family groups, husbands and wives, work colleagues and friends – ranging in age from 18 to 60 – all began the course, most having never run before. To ease in the new members, the programme started with a gentle session of 60-second running and 90-second walking intervals.

The project received funding from the Healthy Fenland Fund, a charitable fund managed by the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, and this is the second year that it has been hosted by Thorney Running Club.

With encouragement and support from the Club and many of last year's C25K graduates, forty new runners completed their graduation run in the pouring summer rain to take home medals, certificates and a goodies bag. There were tears of joy and pride as runners achieved their own personal goals, with older Thorney Running Club members, some in their sixties and seventies, encouraging new runners in their twenties and thirties to sprint for the finish line. Many of the new graduates thanked Thorney Running Club for their motivation and support.

It is hoped these new runners will continue their 'homework' and their running journeys with their new Thorney Running Club friends. Watch out – runners from all ages and walks of life are on the move in the Fens!

Church Matters

Thank You Thank you, thank you. But for what?

Thank you for supporting all the Christian ministers who serve Christ in our town and villages.

There are ten of us representing various Christian churches and communities. We are all dedicated to our ministerial calling, and strongly believe that we are where we are due to God’s call. The opportunity for people to be served

by Christ and come to know Him is enhanced by the varied traditions we are part of.

In religious life, one size does not ‘fit all’. As individuals and communities, we find a particular way to God. God knows this, and provides the means for all to hear His call to faith. God has been generous to the people of Whittlesey and surrounding villages by sending ten ministers of faith and word.

Support is appreciated from our own church communities, and from those with whom we share faith through groups like Churches Together. Long may our ability to look to each other continue to be a blessing to our Church, town and villages.

As ministers who genuinely believe that God has put us where we are, we promise to serve all with whom we share our lives.

The Power of Small Things While visiting the USA, I was invited to spend a day talking to Bible School students on the subject of pastoral care and counselling. During an open question time, one student asked “what was the hardest kind of problem to deal with?” It’s not easy to answer. When dealing with different people’s situations, there can be many difficult challenges.

However, I directed them to an obscure Bible verse: “the little foxes that spoil the vine”. Today, we would say “the smallest issues sometimes cause the greatest problems”; or, when trying to determine whether we should believe the bold promises made by companies or politicians, the voice of wisdom declares “be careful, the devil is in the detail”.

We can become so pre-occupied with the large, obvious aspects of our problems that we either ignore, or fail to take the time to deal with, the

seemingly small things. It’s often these which determine whether the situation is completely dealt with, or simply papered over, only to return later. An experienced counsellor will always seek to discover and highlight the danger of ignoring these issues.

A man was graphically describing his life as being like those annoying cobwebs that always seems to be at face height when walking through an opening. You appear to destroy the web, and wipe it from your face, only to find to your annoyance that it’s back again the next day. Listening to all of this was an elderly man, seasoned by life, patiently waiting for a chance to speak. Finally, he shouted out the obvious: “Stop wasting time, and just kill the spider - then you won’t have any more cobwebs!”

Multi-Cat Households Cats, with the exception of lions, are solitary animals. Other cat species may appear to occasionally form social groups, but they hunt and feed alone; an exception to this rule are young cheetah males, who live, hunt and feed together until adolescence.

Our domestic pet cats, the felis catus species, however, have shown to be remarkably adaptive with their social behaviours. Given the correct circumstances, they can adapt to group living by developing social structures, and this is why your cats may live happily in your household.

So, what can go wrong?

Though many of our cats are very affectionate and seek our attention (when it suits them!), they are largely independent animals, and the introduction of a new cat to the household can bring many problems.

Numerous factors combine to determine the development of a cat’s social structure, such as the number of other cats in the area, the availability of food sources and the compatibility of individual cats. Tension can build to chronic stress, which in turn can lead to inappropriate behaviour, such as defecating away from the litter tray, urine spraying and also stress-induced cystitis.

Bullying and intimidation is common between cats if the social structure hasn't developed properly, and in some cases it may lead to cats leaving home altogether, to set up a new territory.

It is therefore very important to provide enough resources to fulfil your cats’ needs in a group environment.

Some general rules for a happy multi-cat household are as follows: • Have one litter tray per cat, plus an extra one, all in quiet areas away from feeding stations.

• Have one food bowl and one water bowl per cat, preferably in separate places.

• Make sure there’s somewhere for your cat to be alone. Cats like to ‘hide away’ on their own, and they also like high perches so that they can look down and observe any potential competitors approaching. These need to be sturdy so that they don’t wobble when a cat jumps on them.

• Scratch posts are useful in order to prevent your cats from destroying your furniture, walls and woodwork – but they are only useful if the cat uses them!

• Make sure there are plenty of ‘toys’ to go round, plus a few extra just to keep the peace. (We don’t need an excuse to buy a new toy for our pet, do we?!).

The most important thing to do is to consider the cats’ individual needs, and remember that not all people like each other… so why should we expect our pets to always get on? Of course, we never seem to own a cat like we do our dogs – they seem to ‘own’ us!

Embroidery Excitement at New Road School New Road Primary School has been taking part in the World’s Longest Embroidery for Schools initiative, which is being run by the Embroiderers’ Guild, a national organisation whose head office is at the Bucks County Museum in Halton.

The idea is that as many schools as possible complete an embroidery on a metre of fabric; the subject matter can be of their choosing, but must have a continuous line of stitching running diagonally across the piece. It is hoped that enough schools will take part to enable the pieces to be joined together to form an embroidery long enough to gain entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Mrs Deplancke, a TA at the school and a member of the Peterborough branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild, has co-ordinated the project involving all children and staff at the school. The children decided on the elements to be included in the embroidery during assembly time, focusing on the things they considered to be important to the school and the town. These include Molly dancing, the Straw Bear, Sir Harry Smith and Must Farm.

Mrs Deplancke said: “I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and standard of sewing from all those involved, including the children in the reception class. I would especially like to thank those children who were willing to give up their lunch playtime in order to help complete the project, without whom we could not have achieved what we have, and all the staff for their support during the process.”

Wisbech Grammar School are thrilled to announce their partnership with Studio 19, to offer dance opportunities to their pupils as part of their cocurricular activities. Studio 19 will also be offering dance to the wider community, with evening classes hosted at the new studio at the school.

Studio 19 was founded in 2014 by Josh and Vicki Willie, who met and trained at London’s Central School of Ballet and went on to enjoy successful individual careers before they married. Studio 19 is passionate about offering young people the opportunity to explore dance and build confidence and well-being. This fits with the ethos of Wisbech Grammar School, who believe that educational development is not simply confined to the classroom or laboratory, but found in the art rooms, drama and dance studios, sports fields and music rooms.

They go beyond the narrow boundaries of exam specifications, giving an all-round education that inspires. This is reflected in their timetable, which includes ‘Period 5’, a lesson devoted to pupils exploring their interests and finding their passion.

The new dance studio at WGS will be open at the start of term in September 2017, and Senior School pupils will be able to explore dance as part of their co-curricular choices. The wider school, including prep pupils, will be able to take advantage of all that Studio 19 has to offer through their evening classes that will be running from the new studio.

Also taking advantage of the new studio will be the school‘s progressive Music and Performing Arts program. Head of Performing Arts, Mr Al Duncan, is a real inspiration to the pupils and is passionate about everyone – regardless of their age, ability or confidence - benefiting from taking part in Performing Arts.

In other exciting news, WGS’s own 'On the Brink Theatre Company' recently attended the Edinburgh Film Festival to perform their contemporary musical comedy ‘Life - To Go...’.

Safe Local Trades Comes to the Aid of Disabled Victim of Rogue Trader Following months of stress, financial worry, poor health and anxiety brought on by the actions of a rogue trader, a disabled Peterborough man says he can now enjoy his home again.

Brian Gilbert of Orton Waterville, Peterborough, parted with a £1,000 cash deposit to a trader who he instructed to resurface his 71 square metre driveway in February of this year. After taking the money – which equated to half of the fee quoted for the project – the trader completed half a day’s work at Mr Gilbert’s property and then failed to return to finish the job.

Mr Gilbert, who uses a mobility scooter to get around, has been unable to contact the trader nor retrieve any of the money paid. The unfinished driveway has left access to his garage unsafe.

Now, six months after the work began, Mr Gilbert says he can begin to enjoy his home once more – following a DIY SOS-style community call by Safe Local Trades, the city-based community safety service that protects consumers from cowboy and rogue traders.

Safe Local Trades owner, Eileen Le Voi, commented, “Determined to do what we could to help Mr Gilbert, we issued an appeal to the local trades community for any support they could give. We were delighted

Car Finance – Which option is for me?

The most common forms of car finance are hire purchase (HP) and personal contract purchase (PCP). In a nutshell, HP is probably more suitable if you plan to own your new car outright, while PCP may be better if there’s a chance you might want to change it after a few years.

Like all forms of personal finance, you should carefully consider whether you can afford the monthly payments before you sign a contract.

What are HP and PCP? Hire purchase is one of the simplest forms of personal finance. The cost of the new car is broken down into a deposit and a series of monthly payments, plus interest. Once you’ve paid the final instalment, the car will be yours to keep or sell on.

PCP finance splits a percentage of a car’s price into monthly payments and a deposit. You’ll replay

this amount over a set period, after which you can either return the car to a dealer, or buy it outright in return for an optional final payment.

What are the benefits of each?

Generally speaking, PCP monthly payments tend to be less than HP because some of the car’s value is deferred to the optional final payment (which is calculated based on the term and mileage you specify). If you intend to change your car after just a few years – or you’re worried about the effects of steep depreciation – PCP may suit you better. This is because once your agreement ends, you can return the car to a dealer without having to sell it on yourself.

HP deals usually come with a larger deposit than PCP offers, but you’ll not have to worry about paying a sizeable final fee if you’re sure you want to keep the car. Once you’ve made the final payment, you’ll be the car’s legal owner.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Eamonn moved to Whittlesey from Bury St. Edmunds in 1979 and has been a financial adviser for almost twenty years.

He has been married to Lesley for thirty one years and has two daughters who both grew up in Whittlesey.

Eamonn is an active figure in the local community: he is a Town Councillor for the Delph ward, a school governor at Alderman Jacobs and Treasurer of the Whittlesey and District Business Forum, not to mention a long-standing contributor to Discovering Whittlesea.

In his free time Eamonn is a keen middle/long distance runner, with over thirty marathons and a best time of two hours twenty six minutes under his belt.

Where were you born, and what’s your fondest memory of your childhood?

I was born in Bury St. Edmunds, and my best childhood memories of are my hours spent fishing after school and in the summer holidays.

The fact that we’re on the edge of the Fens, which makes running and cycling easier than it might otherwise be. …And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why?

I’d like to change the apathy that many have towards voting, by giving considered thought to issues and getting involved in making this town even better.

Who has had the greatest influence on you, and why?

My father Jack introduced me to nature, wildlife, mechanics, hard work and enjoying the fruits of one’s labours.

Which two characters, alive or dead, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with, and why?

Muhammad Ali, because he transcended his sport and would undoubtedly be very entertaining. I’d also love to meet Isambard Kingdom Brunel, because he was a talented engineer and I wish I had been allowed to do metalwork at school!

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

Enjoy your teenage years – you only get one set of them!

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I see myself remaining local to Whittlesey, helping put something back in to sport and the community, and watching my grandchildren grow up.

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Honest; hardworking; appreciate comedy/art.

Pension Age: 68?

David Guake recently announced to MPs that it is the government’s intention to bring forward by seven years a retirement age of 68 for men and women after 2044. The change will impact those born between 5th April 1970 and 6th April 1978.

What might the impact be? If a household is reliant on the State Pension, then a year without any benefits could mean drawing on other reserves if they are available. Another alternative might be to carry on working an extra year.

Two important points: If ‘working on’ or using savings/investments to bridge the gap does not sound attractive, the importance of having an alternative strategy becomes a priority. It is true that anyone can retire at any age – the question is whether it is affordable.

Secondly, the escalation in increasing the state retirement age is unlikely to recede, because average life expectancy is increasing and National Insurance contributions are not accumulated for each individual; they are collected to fund current pension benefits and other benefits.

A good exercise is to calculate the level of income required in retirement, then compare it with what you know will be provided. If there is a shortfall there are two choices: either reduce your expectations, or increase your provision for a guaranteed income.

Did you know that pension contributions may be added to (within limits) very tax efficiently?

Supposing you have £8,000 in a Cash ISA account, earning 0.5% interest, it will grow

by about £400 in a year. Investment in a pension will increase the contribution by £2,000 from tax relief, or even more if the contributor is a higher rate tax payer.

Having easily accessible cash funds remains an important part of financial planning. However, accepting a very low rate of interest on those funds is optional – there may be other alternatives that will help make those funds work harder for you. The Local Music Scene

The winter months seem a long way off from the green pastures and music stages of summer, but planning and performing is a continuous cycle - like a fairground wheel, you keep passing the same point. With this in mind, we look forward this month to forthcoming events.

Immediately after any festival or fete, the organisers hold a ‘wipe up’ meeting to discuss what went well, what was not so good, and what needs tweaking for next time.

For those who have simply rocked up, performed then left, the behind-the-scenes aspects of a festival can be time-consuming and frustrating.

The programme can change just after printing, and even on the day. Festivals with paid performers are slightly better-organised, as there is usually some form of agreement or contract with a commitment to the event on their list of engagements.

The free or charity performances, however, can be hit by acts dropping out due to other engagements, or due to agent/promoter pressure to attend alternative events or paid gigs. Thankfully the music fraternity is, on the whole, a pretty loyal bunch of people who simply want to play to a responsive and appreciative audience.

Behind the scenes there is an army (sometimes of only two or three people) who build the stage, provide the power and lighting, set up the sound system, rearrange the equipment between acts and tweak the knobs. There are also teams that manage traffic diversions and road closures; teams that erect tents, marquees and pop up stalls and gazebos; street cleaners, security and first aiders; and, of course, the event management team.

Over the past few years, the Whittlesey Festival has grown to three performance areas and its entertainment repertoire has developed to 74

include something for everyone - from marching bands and puppet shows, to choral singing and folk music, to rock and roll. The town has vintage and custom vehicle displays, a charity tombola and craft and merchandise stalls, along with amusements for the children.

The main square tends to host the active performers, marching bands and demonstrations, whilst in St Mary’s Church, school choirs, soloists, duos and the Whittlesey Wind Ensemble provide easy listening. The churchyard marquee houses amplified bands and performers playing popular covers and original music.

This year we will be joined by the young sound engineers from Crystal Clear Productions, who will be observing in preparation for the 2018 Festival, when they will be coming on board to provide sound and stage management for the Church and churchyard stages. The team is led by local performer Pino Soccio, whose company provides stage management and sound engineering training for aspiring young stage crews. His team ran the successful Yaxley Festival stages this year, and we look forward to their support.

As this page goes to press we will be preparing for the St. Andrews Fete on August 28th, having been to Southery the day before for an Air Ambulance event. As I said earlier, the wheel continues to turn…!

School Festival Days

Festival Day was the one great day of the year for the children of the Nonconformist Sunday Schools in Whittlesey. The day was anticipated with great excitement, and the children couldn’t get to sleep the night before!

Some girls probably had an uncomfortable night because their mothers did up their hair in curling rags, which were kept in until the very last minute so that the ringlets were in first class condition for the great event.

The children assembled at their various Sunday schools at 1pm, where their teachers would pin blue ribbons on them, probably to suggest that the wearer was a ‘true blue’ Christian.

The children then marched with banners to the Market Place.

When they were all assembled, the conductor for the singing of the Festival Song mounted a tall pair of household steps and, accompanied by a band, the children sang with great gusto: “Another year has passed away, Time swiftly glides along; We come again to praise and pray, And sing our festive song.”

The band then led the children around the town to the Manor House field. Once there, the children were seated on the grass or on wooden benches arranged in long rows. Boys and girls were strictly segregated. A meal was prepared across the road in the Public Hall and served to the S E PTEM B ER 2017

children from large baskets at 3pm. The fare consisted of plain bread and butter and ‘4d a ton’ cake (Madeira cake). These were washed down with tea served from large enamel jugs or brass cans.

The children were expected to take their own cups or mugs to this event – as can well be imagined, many cups were broken en route! The boys made a practice of knotting their hankies through the cup handles and swinging their cups as they walked along. It was easy (or clever) for one’s mug to bump into the one being swung by the boy in front or behind.

After tea, the children moved to a field on the south side of the Manor House for competitions. In some years a display of maypole dancing was given before the inter-class races began. Prizes were awarded for decorated bicycles and dolls prams, or various floral arrangements. In 1919, £12 and 10 shillings was spent on bibles to be given as competition prizes, and nine hundred children sat down to tea.

in those days, it was dark by this time, at the end of June or early July. Parents of the Church of England children who were not invited to the treat were able to watch the firework display from the corner at the junction of Aliwal Manor and Grove House.

The firework display included set pieces such as the King’s and Queen’s heads picked out in fireworks. The firework manufacturers had two or three men setting up the display for a day or two before the event. The cost was around £20. The display always ended with ‘God Bless our Sunday School’ being spelled out in the sky.
