Raspberry Fool I n g redie nt s Method 1 Place the raspberries in a medium bowl and slightly mash with the back of a large spoon.

Add 1/4 cup of the sugar and stir gently.

2 Whip the cream with the remaining sugar to stiff peaks. Gently fold in the raspberries, leaving streaks throughout the cream.

Eat the Season

Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce Cherries make a slightly tart sauce to set off the richness of the duck.

Method 1 Pat the duck breasts dry with paper towels.

Using a sharp knife, score skin in a 1/2-inch diamond pattern (do not cut into flesh).

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large, heavy-bottomed, frying pan over a medium high heat. Season the duck and place in the pan, skin side down. Cook until skin is browned and crisp, about 6 minutes.

Turn duck breasts over, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 4 minutes. If the duck is not fully cooked at this point, finish the cooking in an oven, pre-heated to 220ยบC/gas mark 7. Transfer to a plate and leave to rest for 10 minutes.

Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of fat from the pan. Add the shallot to the pan and stir over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add stock, cherries, port and honey. Increase heat to high and boil until sauce is reduced to a glaze, stirring often for about 3 minutes.

Whisk in 1 tablespoon of butter. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper.

March Steam and Vintage Show

By Jaqui Fairfax March Steam and Vintage Show is back for its fourth year, building on the huge success of the previous three years. Last year, I took my grandson to the show and it was a fantastic day out, where there was something for the whole family to enjoy.

This year promises to be even better, with new attractions and entertainment, most notably the thrills and spills of the ‘Ken Fox Wall of Death’.

There will be over five hundred exhibits on display, from large and small steam engines, vintage commercials, tractors, vintage caravans, classic cars and motorcycles. Take time to chat to the owners of the exhibits and learn more about the history of these wonderful vehicles.

How Could Acupuncture Help You? Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms.

A lot of people have acupuncture to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Figure 1 - Cross section of a nerve What exactly is ‘pinching a nerve’, and why is it so painful? This month we explore this very question.

aches and momentarily sharp pains on movement in the distribution of the nerve.

A nerve is made up of many separate conducting fibres which are bundled together and encased in a protective sheath. The sheath is then enveloped by small blood vessels, just as a vine would wrap around a tree trunk, to provide the nerve with the nourishment it needs. See Figure 1 for a crosssectional visualisation.

A moderate pinch extends into the outer nerve fibres. Here we start to see symptoms relating to dysfunction in the conduction of the nerve signals.

Generally speaking, the outer circumference fibres tend to consist of tactile sensation fibres. Therefore, the first neurological symptoms are pins and needles, tingling and/or altered sensation along the path of the nerve. The ache becomes more pronounced as more blood vessels are affected, and the sharp pain occurs more often and with less movement.

These nerves run throughout our bodies, ducking, weaving and even passing through any structures (such as muscles, tendons, organs, bones, etc.) which stand between them and their destination.

When we pinch a nerve, as the name suggests, the nerve’s space is encroached by the surrounding structures. The extent of the encroachment determines the amount of compression placed on the outlined components of the nerve, and hence the symptoms we feel.

A mild pinch results in the outer blood vessels and sheath being compressed. This reduces the blood flow downstream and tethers the sheath, making it less elastic. Our symptoms are therefore low grade

In cases of serve pinching the compression extends deeper into the nerve, affecting those fibres controlling our muscles, joints and organs. We see symptoms such as muscle weakness, reduced limb control, dysfunction in how a particular organ functions and a further enhancement of the symptoms in a moderate pinching scenario.

Rectifying the problem involves finding the structure which is causing the pinching, and addressing its dysfunction.

People Dig Deep for Charity Golf Day Organisers Terry Austin and Neil Rickett would like to thank everyone who helped raise funds for their Charity Golf Day on June 9th, in support of Teenage Cancer Trust and the Peterborough Oncology Department.

The day featured a great turnout of 110 people – including snooker star Joe Perry – and the weather held out for most of the day, with only one heavy shower.

The winner of the handicap event was Paul Mason, from Whittlesey, with 42 points, and the winner of the non-handicap event was Gennaro, from Peterborough, scoring 33 points.

Along with the golfing, the auction, raffle and other competitions helped to raise funds as people really dug deep. The target set by Terry and Neil was £5,000 – and they totally smashed it, raising in excess of £8,500!

Once again, they’d like to say a massive thank you to all the players and sponsors, without whom the figures raised just wouldn't have been possible.

Prof. Ford Celebrates in the States

Your New Mayor Cllr. Ralph Butcher Ralp h Butcher I’m Ralph Butcher, and I was born in Coronation Avenue, Whittlesey, where I lived until I moved to Coates as a teenager with my parents and sister. I still live in Coates with my wife Pat, who was born in the village, and in September this year we’ll have been married for fifty five years. I think by now I could be classed as a local!

Throughout my lifetime I’ve seen many changes – some good and some not so good – but having been lucky enough to have travelled quite a bit, I have never found anywhere else I would prefer to live.

Eastrea scientist Brian J. Ford has been celebrating in America, where he has just presented his hundredth lecture to the Inter/Micro conference in Chicago. His first lecture to them was in 1969.

This July, Professor Ford has been awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Microscopical Society at a ceremony in Manchester – but he is insistent on being back for the Eastrea Family Fun Day on Saturday July 15th. Brian was behind the new Eastrea Centre, where the event is being held.

"I wouldn't miss that one for anything!" he says.

In my role as a Councillor I will always try and do my best for the benefit of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages. My appointment as Mayor has put me more on the frontline, but I am always approachable and willing to listen to everyone.

My first official duty was to lay a wreath at the unveiling of the memorial plaque at Coates Church, to honour the fourteen American servicemen who were killed when their planes collided over Benwick and Turves in 1944.

I also attended the fantastic BusFest with my wife and other members of my family, and thought what a great day it was for the local community.

I would like to thank and congratulate all those responsible for organising the event.

Benwick Residents Enjoy a Nostalgic Look at the Past On Sunday 21st May, local residents filled Benwick Village Hall to view the Benwick Exhibition.

Pearly King and Queen to Perform at Whittlesey Festival To celebrate the tenth Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 10th September, we are pleased to announce that one of the headline acts will be London-based ‘Cockney Pride’ The Pearly King and Queen, together with their band.

Pearly King (singer and guitarist John Knowles), Pearly Queen (vocalist Sue Sawyer) and band member Paul (pianist and trumpeter) will be performing both in the parade and at the Buttercross. Dressed in full authentic Pearly Button costumes, they will be performing all the old favourites and comedy songs for the crowds to sing along to. Their repertoire of songs include Lambeth Walk, Down at the Old Bull and Bush, Any Old Iron, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles and other familiar tunes, and there will be Union Jacks available to wave as they perform.

The full carnival parade will begin at about 9.45am from the Christian Church in Broad Street, and will wind its way through the centre of Whittlesey to the Market Square, where the Deputy Mayor of Whittlesey will officially open the Festival.

It promises to be a procession of vibrant music, colour and exciting entertainment, involving many of the acts performing on the day. We want to encourage as many people as possible to line the streets of the parade to give it a full carnival atmosphere.

This is just one of many attractions at the Festival, which also features a huge programme of music, dance and entertainment, numerous stalls and a display of over one hundred vintage vehicles. All the local schools are taking part in the Art Competition, with their entries on display throughout the day, so be sure to take a look at their work by visiting the exhibition in the Christian Church.

July Gardening Tips All of that hard work earlier on in the year should be paying off now, as you should be reaping the fruits of your labour almost on a daily basis.

July is generally a warm, dry month and you will need to make sure that you keep the crops watered frequently, as sporadic watering can cause a number of problems: flowers may fall, skins split, fruits may not form and plants may bolt. The best times to water are at the beginning or end of the day to minimise evaporation and make sure that you give the plants a good soaking to penetrate right down to the roots. Putting mulch around the plants can help conserve the moisture, slowing down evaporation rates and help keep the weeds at bay: as does regular hoeing.

• Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots.

Another problem at this time of the year is pests:

• Cover cauliflower heads with the leaves to prevent them from going yellow.

• Inspect cabbage leaves for eggs or caterpillars and squash them or spray.

• Check for blackfly on broad beans, runner beans, beetroot, and apply a spray as soon as you see them.

• Spray tomatoes and potatoes against blight and dig up any rogue potato plants from last year, as they may be harbouring disease.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Florence fennel.

• Space may be created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes; you can use this space to plant out Brussels sprouts, cabbages and cauliflower that you have grown from seed.

• Transplant leeks into their final growing position.

A few jobs for this month include; • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes.

• Feed tomatoes and peppers.

• Lift garlic, onions and shallots: loosen the soil around the roots then choose a dry spell to lift them, lay them on the ground to dry out in the sun: this should help prolong their storage life.

• Early potatoes should be coming out of the ground now and, although they do not store as well as the maincrop varieties, they will store until finished.

Read to Succeed - By Steve Barclay MP

I

would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for me in the General Election on June 8th. It is a great honour to be re-elected as the Member of Parliament for North East Cambridgeshire and to achieve an increased share of the vote. A special thank you also to all the volunteers who helped my campaign for their fantastic support.

I have now returned to Parliament, where I will continue to speak up for our area. This specifically will include working to continue to secure further investment for our schools, building on our status as one of twelve national education opportunity areas, for improvements to transport infrastructure, and to localise more healthcare.

Although Parliamentary work was put on hold during the General Election, as you cease to be an MP, my community work with ‘Read to Succeed’ continued. Every school in North East Cambridgeshire has now benefitted from a fun, free, ‘Lion Learners’ literacy workshop. ‘Lion Learners’ bring reading to life, allowing children to hold and touch the animals they read about in their books. My office are now receiving new book donations for ‘Read to Succeed 2017’, and the aim is to receive enough books so that every child in Years Four and Five can have a new book to keep - involving around three thousand books.

A token will be placed in the back of every book donated; children can then take their token to the library, when participating in ‘The Summer Reading Challenge’, and win a host of fun prizes. Last year, ‘Read to Succeed’ oversaw a 16% increase in children taking part in “The Summer Reading Challenge’, and I hope to build on this success.

Church Matters

Praying for the World We Live In It needs to be our daily task to pray for the world in which we live: to offer intercession to God our Father, through Jesus the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we do this, we place before Him the needs of our world and look for His response. It is not that God requires us to tell Him what is going on, He knows this already. He wants us to demonstrate to Him that we know what is going on. In the knowing we ask questions and seek answers. What can be done to make the world a better place? What can I do to make my part of the world a better place?

Where is God in our experience of life?

When a disaster or tragedy strikes we tend to focus on what happened; the eruption of a volcano or the detonation of a bomb. All too easily we can fail to see the acts of compassion, courage and selflessness that occur. When we do direct our

attention to these acts of pure humanity, we should also be able to see God at work, answering prayer and being alongside victims and those helping them.

So commit yourself to daily prayers of intercession for the world in which you live and have your being. Allow God to show you His grace at work. Become someone who makes a difference, someone who makes the world a better place.

WEFA – The Church and its Community Heart Our growing church is committed to retaining its clear focus on two things: ‘being at the heart of the natural and spiritual life of our community’. This phrase forms part of the very fabric and heart of our church.

This month I’d like to talk about Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid (WEFA), which was established two years ago to support those in our community who are struggling to feed their families. Our church considers it a privilege to be a part of this, and to freely offer its facilities as the distribution and administration centre, along with access to its design and marketing team.

What does WEFA provide?

WEFA has its own bank account, insurance and constitution, allowing it to support anyone in the Whittlesey catchment area who is experiencing difficulty providing food for their family. It offers advice with budgeting, cooking skills and confidential counselling. It is, however, not a substitute for a supermarket.

Who supports it?

WEFA is supported by local church congregations, supermarkets and of course generous members of the public who bring food or finance directly to our church. WEFA also has an allotment overseen

by Councillor David Mason, which provides fresh produce in season. Please contact us if you wish to help with the allotment.

How can people access help?

We endeavour to remove the embarrassment and difficulty from these situations, while still closing the door to abuse. Schools, surgeries, Citizens Advice and other various agencies all have information about WEFA, or you can call or email via the details below.

People requiring help can collect from the church Monday to Friday, 10.00am-2.30pm. For those who have difficulty leaving the house, we can deliver on Fridays. Please do get in touch if you’d like any more information.

Guests Enjoy Sunshine and Songs at St. Andrew’s Hall Visitors to St. Andrew’s Hall, Whittlesey, were entertained with live music and family fun during two events held at the venue recently.

A celebration for the friends and supporters of the Hall was held on a breezy but sunny Sunday afternoon in June. A varied and enjoyable programme of music was provided by singersongwriters Sophie Frear, Steve Gibbs, James Edmonds, Vicki Mason (from Future Stars) and Holly and the Boatmen, along with a guest appearance

by Dale Diamond. The audience joined in with the singing and dancing throughout the afternoon.

The event was supported by an outside bar from the Falcon Hotel, catering by A & M Caterers and Frank’s Ices.

Organiser Cheryl Jakes and Church Warden David Mason thanked the performers and the many volunteers for their continued support for the Hall and the events staged within the grounds. They look forward to the next major function, which is the Summer Fete on August 28th.

Less than a fortnight earlier, the Hall also hosted its Family Fun Day, which featured a variety of exciting activities for all the family.

Once again, the organisers were thrilled with the event’s success. “Thank you to everyone that came to the Fun Day. The sun was out and there was a brilliant atmosphere. I hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did organising it.”

Visitors were equally delighted, with one guest commenting: “This is the first time we have visited one of the Hall’s events, and we had a fab afternoon. Thank you!”

Another visitor perfectly encapsulated the mood of everyone who attended when they remarked, “We will definitely be going to the next one!”

Coates Village Show is bursting onto the green in 2017!

Excellent Response to Neighbourhood Plan Whittlesey Town Council would like to thank everyone who responded to its recent Neighbourhood Plan survey.

Residents responded enthusiastically to give their views across a wide range of issues, including housing, transport, community, leisure, environment and heritage. 1,159 surveys were completed online, and analysis of the results has already begun. The information gathered is extremely useful, and is already providing very interesting feedback that will help shape future development of the parish.

In addition to the full survey delivered to all homes, an age appropriate version was distributed to all pupils of the four primary schools and all students at Sir Harry Smith Community College. This information is not part of the Neighbourhood Plan, but does nonetheless provide a valuable insight that is both informative and helpful.

Two examples of the data analysed so far are presented on the graphs above.

The Coates Village Show has been an annual afternoon of family fun for over ten years – and with a new range of family activities on North Green, on top of the usual attractions in the church grounds, this year’s event promises to be the best yet!

The Coates Village show is actually two events: the Show Competition in the morning, where entrants can put forward a range of produce and crafts to be judged against other entries, and a fun afternoon of exciting activities for all the family.

As in previous years, the competition will have categories for vegetables, fruit and salad, flowers and plants, cookery, photography, art, handicraft and farming, as well as a range of categories specifically for children. Entry to the competition is open to everyone living in Whittlesey, Pondersbridge, Eastrea, Coates, Turves and surrounding farms and smallholdings, as well as any students who attend schools in this area, no matter where they live.

Beginning around 1.00pm, the usual range of activities in the grounds of Holy Trinity will include a sweet tombola, raffles and a range of stalls and games offering chances to win and buy. Of course, you’ll also be able to see the entries submitted into the morning’s competition. As well as all this, visitors will now enjoy additional stalls, a bouncy castle and other attractions on North Green!

The full programme for the day, including schedules and entry forms for the competition, will be available from local shops and pubs for 50p from mid-June. You can also download it for free from foht.wpcteam.org.uk.

The 2017 Coates Village Show takes place on July 15th, at Holy Trinity and North Green, Coates. The closing date for competition entries is 12noon on Thursday July 13th.

Moving Home? Handy Tips from Malcolm James Amid the excitement and hectic chaos of moving home, it can be easy to overlook the smaller, yet still important, details. Here’s a checklist…

Movers - There are many options when it comes to organising your move, from doing it all yourself, through hiring a ‘man with a van’, to the complete service, where a team will pack up your whole home, load and deliver. Decide and book your date in early.

Electoral Register - Remember to update your details on the electoral register, which is updated every month. You can download an electoral registration form and send this to your local Electoral Registration office, for Whittlesey Fenland District Council.

Council Tax - Let the council know you’re moving in advance, so they can stop charging you council tax for your old address from the day you move out. If you are staying within the borough, it will adjust your bill to a new rate. If you are moving further afield, your new council should be notified too.

Gas and Electricity - Take gas and electricity meter readings on the day you leave your house and inform your supplier. This will ensure that your bill doesn’t include any of the next resident’s energy usage. You can take your energy tariff and account with you to your new address if you wish, so speak to your existing energy supplier about it.

Contact your provider if you are planning to take existing arrangements with you, as this can take a few weeks to arrange.

Water - Inform your water company of your move.

If you have a water meter, give your water supply company at least five working days’ notice, to avoid being charged for water used after you’ve moved out.

Loyalty/Reward Cards – This is always the one that gets forgotten, and we could be missing out on all those money-saving vouchers!

TV, Phone and Broadband - It is important to think about what you’re going to do with your internet connection, phone line and TV packages.

Tricks of the Eye - by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin rather clinical and cold. Is that the atmosphere I’m aiming for? Or do I want the opposite, cosy and warm? What if I painted with dark colours?

Of course, the answer is always in the effect you wish to create. Surprisingly dark colours don’t necessarily make a space feel smaller, especially if you merge the colour from the walls across the ceilings and floors. The eye tricks the brain. As you cannot easily make out the edges of each plane, your imagination assumes the room’s bigger than it really is. Sometimes it’s better to go with the flow – if you have a dark room, embrace it! Paint it a dark colour and be clever with your artificial lighting. Create an ambience full of drama, interest and even a bit of romance. There are benefits and disadvantages to either going light or going dark and it’s easy to take the middle road, but where’s the fun in that?!

“Come and talk to us about interiors, we want to know the tricks of the trade”, said the Events Organiser from the Women’s Institute. And today I put the finishing touches to the slideshow I’ll be presenting this week. I know it will be a lot of fun!

I’ve given talks to groups all over Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire and I’m continually inspired by the ladies’ camaraderie and warm welcome.

There are no secrets in interior design; the skill is in knowing when to use certain ideas, and when not to. For example, the lounge in my tiny cottage needs a fresh coat of paint. At the moment, it’s a pale turquoise blue – well, I like colour, and have the confidence to be very bold with pattern - so what shall I do with it in my makeover? Low ceilings and small windows suggest a light colour scheme, perhaps even going ‘all white’. An easy solution.

Microsoft 10: The Creator’s Edition Last year, Microsoft announced it would be releasing in autumn 2017 a very special version of Windows 10: the ‘Creator’s Edition’.

A number of new features were to be developed, including the following:

• Custom Colours: This has been substantially improved with improved previews.

• Travel Back in Time: A new ‘Timeline’ app lets you jump back in time to what you were working on previously (whether it was two hours or two months ago), allowing you to hop back into your files, apps, and sites as if you had never left.

• Themes: These will be sold by Microsoft in the Windows Store, so if you’re a gamer or have a hankering for a particular type of theme, it’s likely you’ll find what you want.

• A new ‘across the device experience’: As you log out of one device, Cortana asks you whether you want to continue working in your app, document, or website on your next device, with the ability to copy and paste from your clipboard on all connected devices.

• A new type of cloud storage: You can access your files in the cloud without using any storage space on your device; called ‘OneDrive Files On-Demand’, it uses File Explorer to manage and access any files anywhere on different devices.

• A new app called ‘Story Remix’: A simple and easy-to-use app which brings together photos, videos and music into a video, with a soundtrack, transitions, and 3D objects personalised further with ‘Windows Ink’.

• 3D Creation: Snap a picture on your tablet, phone or laptop and then convert it into a full 3D image.

• VR (virtual reality) apps: You will need to buy a VR headset and VR motion detectors.

In addition to all the above, having looked at the new Creator’s Edition, it’s safe to say there are a number of new and interesting changes hidden under the bonnet, and not previously mentioned

by Microsoft.

• Action Centre: This has been changed, with the addition of sliders for volume and brightness.

• The ‘People’s Bar’: This is a little ‘widget’ (app) that lets you talk and email by switching between Skype and Email as you wish (and other apps yet to be confirmed).

• New Groove Music Maker app: This looks a little like Microsoft's Surface Music Kit Remix apps for the Surface cover that it never released broadly.

It's clearly a simple-to-use music creation tool that's designed with touch in mind. Judging by the brief demonstration I’ve seen, you'll be able to select riffs from a library, add sounds from different instruments, and alter the BPM and length of tracks easily. It's another example of Microsoft aiming Windows 10 at creators.

• New Windows Defender: Windows Defender currently exists as a classic win32 desktop app in Windows 10, but Microsoft's video appears to show a Defender app that looks a lot like a universal app. If Microsoft does move Defender to the universal platform, then it's one more step from preventing the jarring process of having to shift between these modern apps and the old desktop ones for basic settings in Windows 10.

There you go – a simple guide to the new Windows 10. The final bugs are still being removed, but Microsoft will, at some point during the next few weeks, ask you to check your settings. Just review the detail and reset as you see fit. Then, in due course, your computer will complete its update to this new Windows 10 version.

Local History

The Great War in Whittlesey - by Connor Martin Part 8: The Parker Brothers

This month’s article focuses on the Parkers, yet another family whose lives were torn apart by the war raging in Europe a century ago.

Arthur Parker was born at 7 Setchfield’s Yard, Church Street, Whittlesey. Not much is recorded about him, other than the fact he enlisted for the 1st Northamptonshire Regiment. Arthur was one of the many men who joined a ‘Pals Battalion’ – battalions of men who enlisted together in local recruitment drives, with the promise that they would be able to fight for King and country alongside their friends and neighbours. Having joined and fought in northern France, Arthur was tragically killed by artillery on the 6th of November 1914.

Charles Parker also joined the 1st Northamptonshire Regiment, alongside his brothers Arthur and George. Charles, however, outlived Arthur and remained on the Western Front when he heard of his brother's fate. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), Charles was able to take part in the Christmas Truce of 1914, in which the two opposing sides famously laid down their weapons for a day as they exchanged stories, gifts and even the occasional game of football.

Unfortunately Charles was killed only five months later, just before the commencement of the planning that would culminate in the Battle of Loos on May 9th 1915. His name is recorded at the Le Touret Memorial in France, which is dedicated to the 13,389 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the area prior to the Battle of Loos, and who have no known grave.

The third brother to join the 1st Northamptonshire ‘Pals’ Regiment in 1914 was George Parker. George lived through most of the war’s first two years, eventually losing his life in the infamous Battle of the Somme, an Anglo-French offensive launched to relieve the struggling French at Verdun in July 1916.

As one of the bloodiest battles in British history, its name has become synonymous with tragedy and death – and George’s experience only confirms this perception. Remarkably, he survived going ‘over the top’ on the first day of the battle – which saw 20,000 British soldiers killed, and remains the worst day (in terms of casualties) in the history of the British Army – but didn’t live to see much more of the battle.

By the 14th of July the offensive was slowing, with the attacks becoming increasingly casualty intensive, and it was then that George lost his life.

It is believed that he was hit by an artillery shell, though this is not confirmed; likewise, it is unknown whether he ever received a proper burial.

There was a fourth brother, Samuel Parker, although I have been unable to find any information about him. Are you descendants of the four brothers?

A Big Thank You from NGNPUK! No Gain No Pain UK (NGNPUK) has been fundraising since 2014, and on May 19th 2017 donated six more machines, along with six lock boxes, to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust to be used in the local communities by our district nurses. This brings the total donated so far to eighteen.

‘EACH’ Campaign Hailed a Success

News from the Royal British Legion As part of our new Gateway Strategy initiative, the Legion is working to make it easier for those we support to understand and use our services, by working in collaboration and partnership with other organisations. The Veterans' Gateway is the first step in this journey. The Veterans' Gateway aims to be the first point of contact for veterans or their families seeking information, advice and support.

The consortium is made up of the Legion, SSAFA – the Armed Forces Charity, Poppyscotland and Combat Stress, with funding from the Covenant Fund. Our connection with referral partners such as Shelter, Mind and other specialists allows us to be the gateway to a range of support that veterans and their families might need, but often struggle to find.

This new service commenced on May 25th and further details can be found on the RBL website, or by ringing our national helpline: 0808 802 1212.

Nationally, the Legion is organising possibly the largest membership event in its history. They are arranging for members to join in the Great Pilgrimage 90, a modern re-creation of the 1928 pilgrimage.

The latest campaign by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) to recruit volunteers was a huge success, with over forty people signing up to add themselves to frames and help the charity in its shops across the region.

Ian Nicolson, Head of Retail and Trading, said: “We’re really pleased that our recruitment campaign worked so well, and captured the imaginations of so many people who stepped forward to donate their time. To have the help of an additional forty people is simply excellent news and it will be a huge boost to our shops.”

EACH shops have seen help come from people of all ages, from students who volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards through to retired people who want an opportunity to get out of the house and make new friends.

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 75% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service.

On August 8th 1928 the original pilgrims marched in solemn salute to the Menin Gate in Ypres, to mark the tenth anniversary of the start of the ‘Last Hundred Days Offensive’ which led to the signing of the Armistice. On August 8th 2018 it will be the Legion's contemporary membership that will proudly carry their standards along that very same route to Ypres.

Belated congratulations go to one of our hardest working branch members, Mick Cooke, who was recently voted runner-up as Whittlesey's Citizen of the Year. Well done Mick - no one deserves it more, and thanks for all you do for the branch and the town of Whittlesey. IN THE HOT SEAT Len is familiar to many Whittlesey residents and Discovering Whittlesea readers as the owner of AA Whittlesey Computers, in High Causeway.

Born in London, Len has enjoyed a long and varied career in IT. His role as an international IT troubleshooter saw him working for a variety of big-name companies, managing many large programmes in locations worldwide – Switzerland, Singapore and Italy, to name but a few. Prior to setting up as an independent consultant, his most recent major role was as Head of IT for NatWest Greece.

Following his recovery from a major stroke five years ago, Len set up AA Whittlesey Computers with the aim of providing a quality, economical service to the people of Whittlesey. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength, employing three more members of staff and moving to larger premises earlier this year.

Where were you born, and what’s your fondest memory?

I was born in London, moving to Whittlesey in 2000. It’s hard to pick a single memory, but I’d have to go with the birth of my first son. I can vividly recall watching television when my then wife called to say she was in labour. I told her I was on my way – and I was, once I’d finished the episode of Thunderbirds I was watching!

What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey?

That’s without a doubt the people, who are so friendly and open. Plus, it’s just a beautiful town and people take real pride in it.

Who has had the greatest influence on you, and why?

Achi Racov, CIO at NatWest. At a time when electronic banking was in its infancy, he gave me the freedom to develop and roll out EftPos (Electronic funds transfer at point of sale). The rest is history!

Which two characters, real or fictional, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with, and why?

I’d love to sit down for a meal with Albert Einstein, who was of course incredibly intelligent but also a very down to earth guy. Sherlock Holmes would also be great company; he knows everything before anyone else does!

Decisive, determined, empathetic, very content and a risk-taker.

…And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why?

The parking. I feel it’s unfair that the town centre is being used increasingly as a park and ride, which puts off local shoppers who struggle to park.

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

Don’t change a thing! It’s easy to look back and have regrets or doubts, but at the end of the day I’m totally content and happy where I am now.

I honestly wouldn’t do anything differently.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Happily married and continuing to provide a first-class service through the shop.

Thank You from Whittlesey Lions Whittlesey & District Lions Club held their annual Golf Day at Ramsey Bowls and Golf Club in April, and this year the President’s chosen charity was NGNPUK. We were able to raise enough funds to purchase a syringe driver for use in our area. Simple Financial Tips When Starting Out

It’s important to understand your contract of employment, and how your gross income becomes a net income after deductions for tax, National Insurance, pensions and any other benefits that are taken straight out of your monthly pay. With this information, you know how much you can work with.

Next is to understand how much your regular expenses are. A special tip: write them down, don’t just guess! Deduct expenses from net income and you are left with your disposable income – that’s what you can play with.

Another special tip: save a third, invest a third and spend a third.

Saving is to build up a ‘rainy day fund’ that you can use for unplanned expenditure, when things go wrong or an opportunity presents itself. Investing is the money you squirrel away for later times that you might not even imagine now – Individual Savings Accounts and Pensions are good examples. The remaining third needs little advice from me, but there’s little point working and not having any fun!

Next in understanding your employment contract, is knowing what will happen if you are unable to go to work (this may differ from being unwilling to go to work!). If you are self-employed there will be little to help you, so having an insurance policy that will provide an income if you are unable to work because of sickness, illness or accident is a sensible safety net. Such plans are not restricted to the selfemployed. If your contract says you only get Statutory Sick Pay, check out what that means and do the calculations above again – then see what the impact is.

If you have financial liabilities (loans, credit cards, mortgage) make sure these are fully covered should anything happen to the income generator(s). Life insurance and Critical Illness insurance should be considered to protect a young family.

Once these bases are covered, take time to plan a medium and long term plan. Include buying a property, moving up the housing ladder, the cost of children, education costs, replacing vehicles, celebratory events and even the timing of retirement. If this task gets a bit difficult, have a word with an Independent Financial Planner to help plot it out, and help you achieve it. It might not be all about expenditure – there could be some silver linings such as inheritances, bonusses or sale of a business to help.

Local History

Wartime Tragedy in Coates Our recent articles on the 1944 Benwick plane crash sparked much interest among our readers, and Keith Butcher got in touch to tell us about another local air crash, which happened in Coates in 1943.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Friday March 12th 1943, when a Wellington Bomber crashed into a cottage in the centre of Coates, killing all four occupants and four on board the plane. The victims in the house were Sidney George Fletcher (39), Phyllis Fletcher (27), Donald Fletcher (4) and Marjorie King (23).

The Ely Standard reported that “the house… stood a short distance west of the village green, on the left-hand side of Eastrea Road going towards Whittlesey. Mr. Fletcher was a garage proprietor, and the garage stands between his house and the Green, also on the left-hand side of the road.”

“The accident occurred at 02.07am on Friday. This was the time recorded by one of the villagers, who has an electric clock, which stopped when the plane crashed.”

The crew of the aircraft, based at RAF North Luffenham, Rutland, had been tasked with a lowlevel bombing exercise when the crash happened.

Those killed were: Pilot Sgt. Kenneth Hughes Long (20); Navigator Sgt. Thomas Francis John Glover (25); Bomb Aimer Sgt. Donald Coulthard Fisher (21); and Wireless Operator/Air Gunner Sgt. Brendan Francis Mullett (20). The cause of the accident remains uncertain.

“The plane was travelling from a north-easterly direction towards Coates. It first hit a tree on the 58

Green on the north side of the main road and passed over a public house [The Carpenter’s Arms] which stands on the corner of the Green. Travelling diagonally across the main road, it crashed through the Fletchers’ house and burst into flames.

It also demolished some out-buildings at the rear of the next house, which is occupied by people named Freear. The wreckage, or what was left of it, came to rest in a field.”

Only one member of the crew survived the crash, having been dragged clear of the flaming wreckage by a 21-year-old aircraftman who was home on leave. He was said to be “still alive on Saturday morning, but in a very critical condition.”

The newspaper report paints a poignant picture of the scene left by the tragedy. “What parts of the walls remain standing are blackened by the fire, and they remind one of a cube of butter which has been cut through by a knife close to ground level...

A pitiful sight is a baby’s pram, which stood at the back of the wreckage.”

VHD in Rabbits Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) is a very serious infectious disease that kills rabbits very quickly, and has no cure. The virus is endemic in the wild population, but is not as well-known as the other most serious disease for rabbits, myxomatosis, which again is fatal.

There has recently been a fairly new strain of VHD claiming lives of rabbits in the UK. Rabbit Haemorrhage Disease Virus 2 (RHDV 20) is less contagious than the original virus and has a lower mortality rate, but if not diagnosed and treated quickly it has the same outcome as the nastier strain.

The new strain is difficult to diagnose as some rabbits succumb to the disease quickly, while others recover without even showing signs of having carried and transmitted the virus in the first place.

Definitive confirmation of the disease is, unfortunately, usually made after death by a liver biopsy. While this can be performed under general anaesthetic, it is very traumatic for the rabbit; if they are showing signs of general weakness as a result of the disease, and as rabbits are very risky anaesthetic candidates anyway, there is a greater risk that they won’t survive the procedure.

recovery, so it is important to keep it separate from other rabbits for a few weeks.

VHD and RHDV 2 are viruses that survive in the gut of animals that feed on the carcases of infected rabbits, and so are found in the faeces of crows, foxes and flying insects. The virus that causes VHD and RHDV 2 comes from the Calicivirus family and is very difficult to kill. It is resistant to constant temperatures of 50 degrees for up to an hour, so is unlikely to be killed in our climate!

In order for your rabbit to be fully covered for myxomatosis and the two viral strains of VHD, they must have a combination vaccine for both myxo and VHD, followed by an additional vaccine for RHDV 2 two weeks later. This regime needs to be carried out on an annual basis in order to fully protect your pet from these terrible viruses.

Year 6 Surfin’ on the Isle of Wight!

Primary school pupils from Whittlesey recently spent the week on the Isle of Wight, visiting a variety of places and taking part in a sea sports activity.

The Year Six pupils from Park Lane Primary and Nursery school departed to the island from Portsmouth, where they spent time looking around on HMS Victory before heading off to the ferry terminal. During the week they visited Amazon World, Carisbrooke Castle, Robin Hill Country Park and Alum Bay, where they took a ride down to the beach on the chairlift and enjoyed the Needles Pleasure cruise. Finally, they spent an afternoon of sea sports, which included surfing and kayaking.

The evenings were also packed with activities, such as playing rounders on the beach, an evening at Isle Bounce and tenpin bowling. On the final day they visited Godshill Model Village, before travelling to Fishbourne to catch the ferry home.

Lorraine Quince, Communications/IT Support at Park Lane, said: “The annual Year Six residential trip to the Isle of Wight took place recently with splendid weather. For many of the children this was the first opportunity they'd had to travel on a ferry and, for some, it was the first time away from their parents.”

“All the children were impeccably behaved and had a fantastic week, exploring the island's rich culture and its timeless treasures. As it was their last residential trip of their primary school education, it will certainly be an experience the children will remember for many years to come.”

We very much look forward to repeating the trip next year.

What’s new at AJS? With so much going on at the moment, it is very difficult to single out one subject this month! It’s a strange time in school, as we start to prepare to say goodbye to those we know so well, but also look forward to meeting new families and children who we’ll be working with over the coming years.

Following the completion of their national tests recently, our Year Six children have been undertaking transition work for their move to SHSCC in September. Highlights have included a visit from some Vikings, and another by Mr. Barker from SHS, who enthralled the children with his science experiments.

At the other end of the school, our first Early Years children for September have started their preliminary visits. Many of them recently saw our new ‘Technology Zone’ in action for the first time.

At the time of writing, the whole school is busy preparing for our annual School Fete, which is managed by the Friends of AJS. So far the children have had the opportunity to take part in a ‘Design a Poster’ competition and we hope to soon display the winner around the town. The fete will take place on July 1st, from 12-2pm.

Each class has been carefully growing their own potatoes as part of a competition, and we look forward to eating them later in the year. We are moving nearer to ‘Bronze’ in our ‘Food for Life’ quest, and Year Five will shortly be visiting a local farm!

Epilepsy Action’s Edwards Awards Winners 2017!

Alphabet Day Nursery has been crowned winner of an Epilepsy Action education award for its work in supporting pupils with epilepsy. The nursery, in Whittlesey, was presented with its ‘Edward’ award by June Massey, Vice Chair of Council of Management, as part of National Epilepsy Week in May. Alphabet Day Nursery was chosen as a winner because of its work with Maya Ratcliffe, 5.

Alphabet has supported Maya, who has epilepsy, since she was ten months old, and while she has now left the nursery to move onto school, the support she received at Alphabet Day Nursery has given her the best start possible.

Maya’s mum Fay nominated the school. She said: “We believe the care, love and support Maya received at Alphabet Day Nursery has made her who she is today. She is a happy, confident, bright girl who has settled into school easily, and is constantly learning and growing. The children at the nursery were encouraged to love Maya just the way she is. A lot of these friends have transferred to

school with Maya and we could not have asked for a better start for her.”

We would also like to say a big goodbye to our pre-schoolers, and wish them all the best in their new schools. It has been lovely watching them grow and achieve during their time at Alphabet, and they will all be missed greatly.

Local History

The Miracle at Eldernell

The story of the miracle at Eldernell is known from a manuscript written at the time by Roger Dodynton, a monk at Thorney Abbey.

It was preserved in the mid1700s by a local clergyman and antiquarian named William Cole, whose large collection of writings about Cambridgeshire history is now in the British Museum.

The story returned to Whittlesey towards the end of the nineteenth century, when it was transcribed by local man Mr J. Fevre for a local history publication.

The present tower, spire and east chancel of St. Mary’s church in Whittlesey were built between 1460 and 1500, so at that time the church building would have looked much as it does today. The list of vicars at St. Mary’s gives the names of two people from 1495-1517: Simon Childerhous and Edmund Edward Fawtrey.

On Thursday 25th October 1505, Robert Whyt of “St. Mary’s parish in Wyttylsey” was “very sick and in Peril of Death”. He was given the last rites. Robert then fell into “a trance” overnight, and in the morning announced that he had experienced a holy vision in which he had met the Lady of Eldernell (the Virgin Mary) and the wounded Christ. Robert said that Christ commanded him to have the Vicar of St. Mary’s preach to the townspeople that they were too blasphemous, and should “keep His laws and commandments better”.

Robert did not move until Monday morning, when he suddenly got up from his bed unable to speak, took a staff, fresh shirt and two rosaries, and set out to walk barefoot in pilgrimage to the chapel at Eldernell, three miles away. The day was cold and frosty, but Robert appeared to feel no pain or discomfort from the icy ground.

For fifteen minutes he could not speak, until he eventually said “Lady Help”. The image cried “tears of water” and Robert Whyt was cured. Eldernell chapel was officially consecrated in 1525 by the Abbot of Thorney but later fell into disrepair.

The Local Music Scene

It’s Show Time!

Following on from last month’s look at set lists, this month we explore performance enhancers.

“Great sound - but a bit ordinary.” This is not a comment you want to hear as a performer, but so often at gigs you could be forgiven for preferring to be at home with the lights off, listening through headphones.

Having covered audience interaction and an attention-grabbing set list, have you thought about your look? Lighting, movement, attire and branding are crucial for the statement of what or who you are as an act.

It would be as unlikely for punks or country singers to arrive in tailored Savile Row suits, as it would be for a DJ not to have at least a minimal light show.

Your musical style and band name can dictate the suggested dress code for your act. Country singers often wear checked shirts and jeans, whilst Take That and Robbie covers opt for the dark suit. Try to be both expressive with your image, reflecting the spirit of the music you perform, whilst also conveying the band brand.

Venues often have minimal or poor lighting, and may allocate performers to an area not really suited at all. Check out the venue if you can, and be prepared for both the awesome and the impossible! Here are some of the setups I’ve encountered: • Under the stairs leading to the loos; • On two pallets in an alcove; • Between the main door and the bar; • Between two tables of large, noisy dining parties; 74

• In a marquee on top of a farmer’s hill, with only a two wire mains feed, during a thunderstorm!

As the above list demonstrates, there’s an array of possibilities when it comes to venues. However, these scenarios were all similar in that they had no easy access to power or lights and needed long extension leads, stage lights and in one instance a temporary earth spike. (Don’t forget that all require a Portable Appliance Test for safety).

To be seen, a set of colourwash LED lights can be bought for as little as £30 from Amazon – this will work well for a soloist. For larger setups or bands, a better option is a set of quality DMX units with slow colour rotation, and lightweight stands to mount them on with adjustable height. Cheaper units can be used to backlight the performance area.

If you have a drummer, try to get an arty band logo or name on the front skin, as well as a light for it. Always have and check a kit list of all the equipment, leads, hardware (nuts, bolts, brackets etc.), before leaving for a gig. At 8pm on a Saturday it may be impossible to find ten kettle leads, four mic leads or even four mics if they are sitting on the table at home a hundred miles away!

Finally, remember to move – if the audience wanted statues, Madame Tussauds has an excellent music section…!
