Eat the Season

Easy Strawberry Muffins

Method 1 Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) oil an 8 cup muffin tin, or use paper liners.

In a small bowl, combine oil, milk, and egg.

Beat lightly. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. Toss in chopped strawberries and stir to coat with flour. Pour in milk mixture and stir together.

Divide the mixture into the muffin cups. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the tops bounce back from the touch. Leave to cool for 10 minutes and then remove from the tray.

Eat the Season

Pork Chops with Gooseberry Sauce Glorious gooseberries are at their best in June and their fragrant acidic taste enhances the flavour of the pork.

Method 1 Remove the tops and tails from the gooseberries.

2 Place all the ingredients for the sauce in a pan.

3 Cook slowly on a gentle heat until the skins of the gooseberries start to burst.

Meanwhile, heat a tablespoon of oil in a large heavy-bottomed pan. Place the pan over medium-high heat and let the oil get nice and hot.

5 Season the pork chops with salt and pepper.

6 Cook them on the both sides for 3-4 minutes.

7 When the chops are cooked place them on a plate.

8 Smother the chops with the gooseberry sauce and serve immediately.

March Podiatry Practice are holding a ‘Diabetes Awareness’ event together with Diabetes UK, on Monday, June 12th, at the start of ‘Diabetes Week’, to promote the importance of good footcare, and to provide free foot checks and health checks, plus general diabetic and healthy living advice.

Did you know that there are more than twenty leg, foot, or toe amputations each day, due to diabetes? This is shocking, especially as four out of five of these amputations are preventable. This is where the ‘Putting Feet First’ campaign comes in.

May was ‘Foot Health Awareness’ month, and we joined Diabetes UK in promoting the importance of good footcare if you have diabetes. Diabetes UK wants to bring an end to the thousands of potentially preventable amputations which are affecting people with diabetes. The great news is that there are lots of really easy steps you can take to prevent foot problems.

March Podiatry Practice and Diabetes UK are continuing to share the word about good

foot health, by spreading the message of the importance of footcare and the simple steps that you can take to ensure you reduce the risk of problems with your feet.

On Monday June 12th, between 9am and 1pm, we are hosting a ‘Diabetes Awareness’ event at March Podiatry Practice. We are pleased to welcome Arthur Smart, from Diabetes UK, who will attend, with lots of information and advice about diabetes, and how to manage it. We will be offering free health checks, with Pearl, from Everyone Health, to assess your blood pressure and weight, and to offer you healthy living advice. Plus we are offering free diabetic foot checks with our podiatrists, Sarah-Jane, Jacky and Alex.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Pain Pain is a feeling, just like touch. It arises when certain sensory nerves, called nociceptors, are activated. These are pain receptors, and in the same way, mechanoreceptors (mechanical touch receptors) enable us to feel the pressure of an object on our skin. The pain receptors can be activated in three ways: Compression This is when an internal (e.g. a muscle) or external (e.g. a garden slab) object places a mechanical pressure on the pain receptor.

Chemical The release of specific chemicals within the body.

These are commonly associated with inflammation, which is created when there is cellular damage.

Ischemic The reduction in blood flow to the receptor. This affects its overall health and therefore it becomes activated.

Once registered, the signal is sent through to our higher centres (our brain), where it is enhanced

or diminished. This reaction is determined by a number of factors: • Our emotion at the time.

• Fears attached to the pain. For instance, if we fear that a chest pain is part of a heart attack, it will feel more painful than if we know it is just wind!

•

What is happening around us. If you sprain your ankle whilst looking after a young child, it may seem less painful than if you are out with your friends.

•

Past experiences with pain. People such as rugby players, builders and farmers can often be good at dealing with physical pain because they experience it regularly. However, they may respond very differently if they have a problem with their internal organs.

The key thing to remember is that pain is controllable. To keep it to its absolute minimum, remain positive, create constructive surroundings and understand it - but do not fear it.

Hats Off to a Brilliant Tea Party Whittlesey residents recently took a leap down the rabbit hole, when they enjoyed a Mad Hatter-themed event to encourage community involvement with the town’s railway station.

Coates Citizen of the Year 2017 – We Need Your Vote!

The Coates Citizen of the Year is an annual event that was launched in 2011. It celebrates a person, voted for by fellow villagers, who has contributed significantly to the village over recent years.

We are now looking for your help in choosing the candidates for the 2017 award. Can you think of someone who goes out of their way to help many villagers or the local community?

Candidates can be of any age, and can be put forward for any reason that you feel is worthy maybe a teenager that helps other people tend their gardens; a person that runs a local club, meeting or charity; a helpful neighbour who always has the time when you need a hand; or a villager who is well-known by everyone for their kindness.

If you have someone in mind, please include your name and contact details, the name of the person you wish to nominate and a brief explanation of why. Nominations can be sent via email to vote@wpcteam.org.uk or in writing to Mark Fairbank, 14 Church Gardens, Coates, PE7 2BF.

Around eighty people of all ages took part in a Treasure Hunt and Tea Party on April 8th, organised by the Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP), in partnership with ACoRP (the Association of Community Rail Partnerships) and Greater Anglia.

The Hereward CRP was launched in October 2012 to establish greater community involvement in the railway line between Peterborough and Ely, and aims to encourage people of all ages to take an interest in the local railway.

April’s Treasure Hunt was launched by the Mad Hatter, who arrived at Whittlesey on the 1.50pm train from Peterborough. Parents, grandparents and children then followed a route along Station Road to Childers Sports and Social Club, finding seventeen railway-themed clues along the way.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a Mad Hatter’s tea party at Childers, which featured sandwiches, cakes and a series of ‘mad’ challenges, such as completing as many star jumps as possible in one minute!

A Hereward CRP spokeswoman said, “The day was a great success, and would not have been possible without the help of around fifteen volunteers. Our thanks go to Childers for providing the venue and embracing the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme.”

One parent said: “We had a brilliant time, and our children really loved it. Thank you so much.”

Former Whittlesey Mayor is New FDC Chairman Fenland District Council has announced its new Chairman for the next two years. At its annual meeting on May 11th, Cllr Kay Mayor (right) received the chains of office from outgoing Chairman Cllr Carol Cox. Welcoming her appointment, Cllr Mayor said: “I am very conscious of the honour that has been bestowed upon me, following in the footsteps of previous Chairmen identified in the photographs around the Council chamber.”

Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017.

Councillors present on Saturday June 3rd will be: Councillor Dee Laws (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Rita Jolley (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern that you wish to discuss with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

The former Whittlesey mayor has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as her nominated charity for the two years of office.

Cllr Cox said: “I would like to thank all members who voted for me, thus giving me the opportunity of representing Fenland as its Chairman. It has been a great privilege, and I have met some very interesting people and been invited to a myriad of places.”

“I have had incredible support from officers and member services, and of course my Vice-Chairman Kay Mayor. I wish her my support and best wishes in what will be an incredible experience.”

Cllr David Hodgson was announced vice-chairman.

THANK YOU FROM COATES BOOK CLUB The Coffee Morning held by the Coates Book Club members on April 19th raised £280 for the homeless charity Centrepoint.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the supporters and helpers who made it such a successful and happy morning. It was great to welcome lots of newcomers into Holy Trinity Church. The flower arrangements looked amazing and everyone was made very welcome. Thank you!

Supporting Reading and Sports Facilities - By Steve Barclay M.P.

uilding on the success of last year’s ‘Read to Succeed’ campaign, pupils at Alderman Jacobs, New Road and Park Lane have been meeting the real life stars of their books, in a fun and interactive literacy session run by Lion Learners. This year’s Read to Succeed theme is ‘Amazing Animals’, and over the past two months, Lion Learners have been visiting every school in North East Cambridgeshire, bringing their very own amazing animals for children to see and hold. These sessions have been kindly sponsored by Nestlé Purina PetCare factory in Wisbech.

With two young children, as many of you can imagine, the General Election has brought many amusing observations from my children and their friends. Whilst my eldest could not have

been prouder, my youngest was bemused as to why there were so many houses that had pictures of me in their windows around the area.

I am assured by them both that they voted for ‘daddy’.

As the summer sports season is well under way, I am looking forward to focusing my energies on helping to prepare a joint funding bid with Fenland and East Cambridgeshire for a Sport England pilot. After being informed that Sport England were accepting bids for ‘Local Delivery Partners’ which would bring a substantial grant, I quickly set up a core team to submit an expression of interest. If successful, it could return a £13 million grant to enhance our local sports facilities.

Church Matters

The Parish Church and Baptism The following words are taken from the introduction of the Church of England’s service of baptism: “Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives; the first step in response to God’s love. For all involved it is a joyful moment, when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the faith.

The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the new Christian, promising support and prayer for the future. Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church.

The service paints many vivid pictures of what happens on the Christian way. There is the sign of the cross, the badge of faith in the Christian journey, which reminds us of Christ’s death for us.

Through the water of baptism we believe we die to sin and are raised to new life, and we are united to Christ’s dying and rising. Water is also a sign of new life, as we are born again by water and the Spirit. This reminds us of Jesus’ baptism. And as a sign of that new life, there is a lighted candle, a symbol of the light of Christ conquering the darkness of evil. Everyone who is baptised walks in that light for the rest of their lives.”

Whittlesey Christian Church DO OUR WEAKNESSES HAVE TO DESTROY US? “We all have weaknesses and strengths.” Recent years have seen many once-strong companies collapse over their unresolved weaknesses. This is certainly not a modern problem; the great ancient empires of Rome, Greece, Egypt and many others have all been consigned to history. But surely weaknesses can work for, rather than against us.

Why should they destroy us? While there are many reasons, high on the list is a failure to recognise and then deal with our weaknesses.

In 1977, William J. LeMessurier designed and erected New York’s Citicorp tower, resulting in his election into the National Academy of Engineering, the highest honour bestowed by his profession. But just one year later he faced a frightening realisation – the tower was flawed and unable to withstand the extra strong winds New York experienced every sixteen years. During construction, the joints of the steel superstructure had been bolted together rather than welded, which would have made the structure much stronger.

He now faced the dilemma of choices: ignore it and risk its collapse, causing the death of many; end his life and leave others to pick up the pieces; or acknowledge and fix it regardless of loss of personal prestige. To LeMessurier, there was only one choice. Welding work began in 1978 with repairs costing millions. Amazingly, his reputation was actually enhanced, with many city officials and colleagues commending his courage and integrity in acknowledging and solving his problem.

When counselling I often offer this encouragement: “Having a problem or weakness does not make you a problem or a weak person – you only become one when your choice is to run away.” The Bible gives us a powerful piece of advice to stop weaknesses destroying us: “My grace is more than enough for you, my power reaches full strength in your times of weakness.”

Plenty to Celebrate at the Whittlesey Festival It’s celebrations all round as we bring you the tenth Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 10th September.

We’ll be joined on the day by the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps (RDTC), pictured left, who are celebrating their sixtieth anniversary, and the Peterborough Highland Band as they celebrate their seventieth year.

The RDTC are a youth military-style marching band based in the London Borough of Havering.

Founded in 1957 by Richard Bouchard, they are one of the oldest independent youth marching bands in the country. They have performed across the globe in marching displays, parades, carnivals and concerts, and have previously appeared at the Royal Variety Performance.

Some of their recent highlights include: performing at the Beating Retreat ceremony in London, where they opened the show and were part of the massed band finale; taking part in a joint concert with the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas in March 2016, to raise funds for the Gurkhas Welfare Trust; and achieving eight awards in the Nautical Training Corps Contest in October 2015. They have also taken part in the Lord Mayor's Parades on many occasions, and in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in London.

The band’s broad music portfolio includes military marches, film themes, popular music and brass classics - often with solos from talented musicians who will delight the crowds at intervals during the day.

Celebrate Civic Day with a Mud Wall Heritage Tour Saturday June 17th is Civic Day, a national day of events, tours and exhibitions to celebrate civic pride in the UK. The Whittlesey Mud Walls Group is marking the day by organising a tour of the town’s mud boundary walls, visible from roads and pavements.

Everyone is welcome, and the tour can be tailored according to weather conditions and age groups.

There are two tours – the first at 10.00am and the second at noon – and both are expected to last one hour and ten minutes. Meet at the Buttercross.

Come along and enjoy an informative and enjoyable journey through Whittlesey’s past, and increase your knowledge and appreciation of these fascinating structures.

The Storers: Supporting Eastrea for 300 Years The Storers Herds and Bulls Grass Trust was established in 1717 to provide financial relief for residents of Eastrea in times of need, hardship or distress, by making grants of money, services or facilities.

Fortunately, today’s welfare state means that true poverty – in the sense in which it was found centuries ago – no longer exists. In more modern times, the Storers’ assistance has included grants towards fuel bills, travel assistance for vulnerable people, and the provision of a seasonal meal to pensioners.

Though times have changed since its foundation, the Trust will still continue to offer financial assistance whenever it considers help to be in line with its ancient tradition. It will assist village organisations that benefit local people, and which are allowable under the Charity Commission scheme of 18th October 1973.

to those starting off in life, by assisting students with financial issues such as tuition fees and the provision of books and materials. Modern apprenticeship schemes were another area the Trustees were keen to develop, along with helping parents with school uniforms, travelling, and assistance with equipment required for courses.

The Trust has offered its Student Bursary scheme since autumn 2000, through which it makes a contribution towards the student fees of any promising individual resident in Eastrea.

So what have the Storers been involved with in recent years? In 2013, the Trustees made a donation to the Eastrea Village Hall Trust of £5,000 towards storage cupboards, provided bursary grants of £2,000, and gave travel assistance to Scaldgate Club of £250. In 2014/2015 costs of around £2,500 were incurred with the letting of land, but bursary grants of £750 were also made, and last year bursary grants of £2,050 were made.

The provision of a pensioners’ meal and bursary grants was reviewed in 2013, and a decision was made to focus additional funding on the young people of Eastrea. It was felt that the continuance of a pensioners’ meal was not in line with the Trust’s primary aims, as it included many who were not ‘poor and needy’; however, the Trust would still consider any application from any pensioner who was ‘poor and needy’.

Can you dig it?

I’m sure that if you are a regular watcher of Gardener’s World you will have seen the feature on 'no dig' gardening...

I was intrigued: what’s not to like? Less weeds, healthier soil and no back-breaking digging! So I have been having a browse on www.charlesdowding.co.uk. It doesn’t seem right not to dig, but I’m not getting any younger and if it makes things easier and saves time, then surely it’s the way to go.

While it is highly unlikely that there will be a frost, the bugs and beasties will be enjoying munching on your plants, so be vigilant and keep them down to manageable levels. If you haven’t adopted “no dig”, then you will have the perennial problem of weeds. They need to be kept at bay as they will take nutrients and water from your crops or shade them from the sunlight. So: • Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp, remove remains so that they won’t re-grow.

• Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds, or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.

• Make sure that you don’t let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds.

Pests are also becoming more noticeable in the warmer weather, so don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons, and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering 24

with a fine mesh. Cabbage root fly, which attacks the roots of brassicas, is caused by female flies laying their eggs on the surface of the soil next to the stem of the plant. When transplanting out young plants, place something around the base of the plant to create a collar e.g. a piece of carpet, cardboard or fleece. Other jobs to do this month include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.

• Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions.

• Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies.

• Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen.

• Crops to plant out include; summer squashes, courgettes, leeks, runner beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn.

• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel.

• Last chance to sow runner beans.

• Brussels sprouts and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of your winter cabbages can also be planted.

Tenants - if you’re looking to rent a property, here are a few handy tips from us at Malcolm James When it comes to the right property for you, you need to start by selecting the area you’d like to live in. You may already know where you’d like to be, or you may have to do some research.

It helps to make a list of things that are really important to you, such as transport links, schools and access to shops. Speak to us about your list of must-haves and nice-to-haves, so we can start to focus your search.

We’ll fully register you on our system with all your contact details, as the lettings market moves fast and you’d hate to miss out on your ideal property.

Always be very clear about when you need to move into your rental property. If you need somewhere urgently, let us know, and we’ll do all we can to find you a suitable place.

Try to be as available and as flexible as possible when viewing properties. We’ve said it before, but the lettings business really is incredibly fast-moving - and when a good property comes to the market there can be a rush to view, and offers are often made immediately. You could miss out if you can't make yourself available within twenty four hours of the agent contacting you.

Don’t stress over or be put off by details in the property. If you don't like the wall colour, or the sofa isn't big enough, have a chat with the agent.

We encourage our landlords to be flexible and accommodate tenant's requests whenever possible.

If you want the landlord to undertake any improvement works, or add/remove furniture, put in your request as soon as you decide to make an offer. It can be much harder to get these jobs agreed once you have moved in.

Once your offer has been accepted you'll need to hand over your deposit to secure the property. We will be responsible for putting it into an approved tenancy deposit holding scheme, and we will pass on the details to you - make sure you hold on to these.

Likewise, let your employer (and any other referees) know to expect a request for a reference.

When you agree to rent a property you will be expected to pay a security deposit and the first month's rent. You’ll be liable for other administration fees too, such as references and the cost of drawing up the tenancy agreement.

Within the tenancy agreement you may also find that extra charges will apply if there is an unexpected change of tenant, and also at the time the tenancy is renewed. At the end of the tenancy it's common for the outgoing tenant(s) to be charged for the inventory check-out, so check your agreement to see if these items are covered.

Once you move into your rental home, make sure you’ve been given the contact details of whoever is managing the property. That way, if something goes wrong, you'll know who to get in touch with. To avoid any damage disputes we always advise you to look after the property as if it were your own.

It’s important that you remember to arrange insurance cover for your furnishings and personal property - the landlord is not responsible for insuring these items.

When it comes to the end of your tenancy, be aware that if the property was professionally cleaned when you moved in, it is likely you will need to arrange for the same to be done when you move out. Whoever is managing the property, be it the estate agent or the landlord, will want to see a receipt for the cleaning.

It goes without saying that you should leave the property in tip-top condition and remove all your belongings, otherwise you risk losing part or all of your deposit.

Just what is ‘Ransomware’?

You may be aware that these articles are usually written a few weeks before publication, but having seen all the recent news concerning high-profile ransomware attacks, the editorial team have kindly agreed to accept this ‘late-breaking’ article.

As well as the NHS, over 75,000 people have fallen victim to the latest attack demanding money from users. If an attack is spotted early all the data can be saved and the ransomware removed without causing further damage; however in many cases it can be very hard to detect until the last minute.

on and all Microsoft security patches are installed. Furthermore, have a good anti-virus programme installed, as this will go a long way to prevent these problems; and for total peace of mind, either create your own back-up solution or utilise our new service.

So what exactly is ransomware? It’s a type of malicious software which usually blocks access to a computer system, or encrypts personal files, until a ransom is paid. Even if you pay the ransom for your files, it is highly unlikely you will actually then receive the key to unlock your computer.

Finally, a couple of ‘tales from the workshop’: A customer recently brought in a laptop which was running slowly. I initially tried to clean it of viruses and spyware, but quickly realised the problem was more serious. When I removed and tested the hard disk drive I could see it was actually failing in front of my eyes – dropping from 40% to 15% in a matter of minutes. The customer told me that the hard disk was fine until it was brought to me, and this would never have happened if I hadn’t removed it. The moral here - please don’t shoot the messenger!

In the light of the recent proliferation of this type of hacking, we are pleased to announce a new service where, for £80, we remove all forms of virus, spyware and adware from your computer. We will then create a special image of your computer, which will be stored by us at a secure location.

(The files are actually unreadable in the format they will be stored.) Should you then become subject to any form of ransomware, or even hard disk failure, we can restore your computer to normal operation free of charge.

The other issue to consider is how to avoid becoming subject to such an attack in the first place. Firstly, Windows XP and Vista operating systems are no longer supported by Microsoft, and so no security updates are issued. The only real solution here is to either upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 10 (subject to your computer’s capability to run these systems) at a cost of £90 or £100.

Another recent case was a customer suggesting the LAN connector on his computer had failed, and asking if we could replace it. After testing I could see all was well, and suggested he was in fact in the first stages of a ransomware or spyware attack; in this instance, one which was switching off small components in readiness to inform the user that the PC had been hacked. We used our specialist tools to remove the problem, and ninety minutes later everything was running fine… and the customer had saved himself the cost of a few hundred pounds on a new laptop!

To celebrate Father’s Day on June 18th, we spoke to three local businessmen about their experiences of fatherhood. Here, they tell us what they learned from their own fathers, how they’ve dealt with the challenges of bringing up their children, and what their hopes are for the future.

Ian Rattan Grosvenor Flooring/3D Grass

Ian came to Whittlesey when his father Leonard, who sadly passed away in 2012, was offered a job at the new McCain factory in the early 70s. Ian attended Sir Harry Smith Community College and had a variety of jobs after leaving school, before taking the plunge into self-employment in 1989. Today, he and wife Jackie run sister companies Grosvenor Flooring and 3D Grass. Daughter Jade was born in 1994, and Elwood completed the family in 2009.

1 What was the most important advice your father gave you?

Marry somebody who can cook!

What key advice do you feel you have given to your own children?

If you want something, you should work hard and go for it. You’re not owed anything by anyone – you make your own way and you get back what you put in.

Whilst growing up, what challenges did you pose for your father?

I got on really well with my father, and he really understood me. It was really a very good father-son relationship and we never had any major issues or fallings out.

What are the biggest challenges you’re facing, or will face, from your own daughter?

Jade has always been a very good and confident girl. She was never a demanding child with a long list of wants. If anything, the biggest struggles have always been knowing what to get her at birthdays and Christmases, because she’s never wanted much!

Would you like to see your daughter follow in your footsteps?

My dad had a great passion for cars which he passed on to me, and it’s now rubbing off on Jade too! At the age of twenty one she owned her first classic car. I like to think that one day Jade will have the family business. I would say she is a lot like me in many ways, except for organisation skills – they definitely come from her mother!

Vincenzo Fontanella is familiar to many as one of the faces of Fontanella’s, in Market Street. Enzo has two children – Sara, 29, and Luca, 27 – and his own father lives in Italy. He has run the restaurant with son Luca for six years.

My father told me that life is too short, and that you need to live it to the fullest!

I reassure my children by telling them not to worry or stress over silly things, and to always be themselves.

That would have to be moving to England – miles and miles away from my family home - when I was just eighteen.

My biggest challenge as a parent is accepting that my son and daughter are now adults, and they make their own decisions now.

My son already has! We went in partnership together and opened Fontanella's back in 2011. My daughter has an amazing career in fashion, but often helps out at the restaurant too. I pride myself on family values and I have instilled this in my children, who have grown up to be wonderful adults. I am a very proud father!

1 What was the most important advice your father gave you?

My father’s best advice was that “in life, no one gives you anything for nothing - what you do with your own hands is yours.”

2 What key advice do you feel you have given to your own children?

I’d say the best advice I’ve given to my girls so far is to respect others if they respect you.

Whilst growing up, what challenges did you pose for your father?

The biggest challenge I posed for my father was when I left home to work full time at the age of sixteen. I’m sure many parents would experience similar worries if their child took such a decision!

What are the biggest challenges you’re facing, or will face, from your own daughters?

Probably the biggest challenges ahead for my children are the next steps in their education: getting through school and hopefully on to university, and from then on I hope that they are always happy.

Would you like to see your daughters follow in your footsteps?

I hope that my children do not follow in my footsteps… I hope they do better! This kind of work means sacrificing a lot. My wife and I work five days a week in Vesuvio, and they’re long hours.

Premier Runner Raises over £1500 for NSPCC Local man Daniel Irwin raised over £1500 for the NSPCC at the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday April 23rd.

Dan won his slot as the Premier Kitchens & Bedrooms runner in a Facebook competition earlier this year, in which entrants had to describe what a place in the London Marathon would mean to them. It was Dan’s closing statement that really stood out: “Running the London Marathon has always been a goal of mine, and I would see this as a wonderful opportunity to achieve this, whilst at the same time hoping to make the lives of others better.”

Dan finished the marathon in a staggering 3 hours and 37 minutes. Although he found the run tough, he hasn’t been deterred from doing it again. “The atmosphere there is unreal and hard to describe.

Despite feeling slightly nervous earlier on in the day, I really enjoyed it and would jump at the chance

to do it again.

The support is sensational, and I’ve now seen that from the perspective of both a crowd member and competitor.”

Early on in his training, Dan stated that he would personally donate £60 if he finished in a time of under three and a half hours, £50 for less than 3 hours 40 minutes, and £25 for less than three hours 45 minutes. True to his word, Dan has donated £50 himself after his successful run.

‘EACH’ Invites Volunteers to ‘Be a Name in a Frame’ East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a new campaign, inviting people to ‘be a name in a frame’ by volunteering in one of the charity’s twenty-three shops across the region.

The charity relies heavily on volunteers to help in its shops, which collectively raise over £70,000 towards the vital care and support EACH provides for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

The EACH shop at 5 Market Street, Whittlesey, urgently needs help with: • Ringing sales through the till on Saturday mornings • All round shop cover on Wednesday afternoons • Sorting our treasured donations on Tuesday mornings Sky, 16, started at the shop to gain valuable work experience, and currently volunteers there every Saturday. “I like to help the charity and I feel like I am learning lots. I enjoy sorting the clothes and the books.”

Mandy, another volunteer at the Whittlesey shop, added: “We are really lucky to have a great team here in Whittlesey - everyone is really welcoming and we have some lovely customers. If anyone has some time to spare and fancies trying something new, this could be the ideal fit.”

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 75% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service.

SING FOR LIFE 2017: FORTY WOMEN WANTED! Following its phenomenal success last year, the charity project is back for 2017, looking for forty local women to perform in a concert supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice.

Now in its fifth season, Sing for Life has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising thousands of pounds for charity, both for Cancer Research UK and for Thorpe Hall, with over £5,000 raised for the hospice last year alone.

“The project is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice”, says Will Prideaux, Sing for Life’s director.

There are as many reasons for getting involved in Sing for Life as there are women who have taken part over the years. Many talk about doing something ‘just for me’ and it’s certainly true that singing is therapeutic, with a host of welldocumented physical and emotional benefits.

There’s a fantastic social scene too, and the opportunity to meet people you wouldn't ordinarily meet and to discover music you wouldn't normally experience.

Plus of course there’s the charitable aspect of the project, and the opportunity to give something back to the community. With £7,500 needed every day just to keep the hospice running, fundraising is always a priority.

The independent environmental charity, “Keep Britain Tidy”, estimates that more than thirty million tons of litter are collected from streets in England every year - that’s enough to fill four Wembley stadiums!

The charity has found that, whilst 62% of people dropped litter, just 28% admitted having done so.

Almost six in ten people said they considered litter to be a problem, and local authorities spend an estimated £1 billion a year clearing up the mess.

However, new plans to clean up on litter louts are currently under discussion which will see fines for people caught dropping rubbish in public places doubled to £150.

At the moment, fines for littering are set locally by councils and range from £50 to £80, with a default level of £75, if the council does not specifically set its own amount.

In addition, drivers could also be fined automatically if litter is thrown from their vehicle, even if a passenger is to blame, according to reports.

The Government wants litter thrown from cars to be treated in the same way as speeding, with the registered keeper held responsible, unless someone else comes forward to admit the offence.

Fines for littering from a vehicle could also be increased from £75 to £125 in England under a new strategy being drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

It would then be down to the driver to either admit to the offence and pay the prescribed fine, challenge it in court, or nominate the passenger who was actually at fault.

The Art of Settling a Claim - by Neil John, Head of Civil Litigation

When I first qualified at the end of the last century, the perceived wisdom was that around 2% of disputed claims, whether fully contested or solely an argument over value, saw resolution by a judge at a trial. At around that time, the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) came into force, bringing sweeping changes in the way cases are handled by the courts. Before then, only a defendant could make an offer to settle a claim, which carried real costs and risks by paying money into court.

With the implementation of the CPR, the claimant could also make offers, under Part 36, which placed a risk on the defendant in costs, if the claimant was awarded more than he or she had offered to accept. But things have gone further than that, as the CPR has had almost ninety updates in its eighteen years of service.

Both parties are now expected to try and settle a claim, or certain issues within it, where at all possible, by use of negotiation or alternative dispute resolution in one form or another. The Small Claims Track, for claims up to £10,000 which don’t involve a personal injury element, has its own dedicated mediation service by telephone, which is free of charge and is run by the Court Service.

In higher value claims, the parties can engage independent mediators, whose fee is split between both sides. The mediator’s job is that of facilitator, and he or she shuttles between the parties, who are usually in separate rooms. All comments and concessions made by either side are strictly off the record, and cannot be used in the court proceedings which surround the mediation.

In this environment, litigants are often more likely to explore settlement, but it is important for each side to be aware of the other’s case, to be able to correctly assess the possible settlement opportunity the mediation affords.

Mediation can take place before, or after, court proceedings are issued.

The courts do encourage parties to mediate or engage in other ADR, (alternative dispute resolution), such as arbitration, and a party can be penalised in costs if they unreasonably refuse to mediate. A full blown trial with barristers on each side, and possibly experts in attendance, is an expensive exercise and the risk of not being awarded costs for refusing to mediate is very real.

So what is the art of settling a claim? Whether you are the claimant or defendant, it is important to understand the other side’s case as well as your own, and make a realistic offer to settle either the whole claim or a specific part of it, as soon as possible. This will place as much risk on the other side and may encourage them to resolve the matter. In crude terms, the longer a case runs, the more it is likely to cost.

Swift resolution saves time and money for both sides.

If the offer made is rejected, you should consider mediation or other ADR, and actively suggest it.

Should your opponent reject mediation without good reason, you may gain a further tactical advantage by having the ability to seek a costs advantage if the matter does end up before a judge.

How Professional Advice Can Work

Many years ago, someone told me that an accountant looks at the past, a solicitor is interested in what is happening now, and a financial adviser plans for the future, taking account of the other two.

The logic of this is still as strong today. What has happened cannot be changed, and what is happening now may well be too late to change - but a good financial adviser can sometimes make up for past decisions and actions with a fresh plan.

There are instances where decisions cannot be undone, but I have helped rectify situations in the past. Sometimes individuals cannot see any potential problems with a course of action because they have never experienced similar situations.

For example, government guidance on longterm care is 375 pages long. How far would the average reader get before their eyes glazed over, when they simply wanted to unearth the most appropriate investment for an individual that might require care, and how ownership should be established? Then, what about ownership of the main residence, and what implications there might be on the introduction of an additional IHT allowance, and how it applies to the main residence and a trust established for another reason?

Returning to the initial point about which type of advice you require, a financial adviser may point out what might go wrong in the future; that you may need legal advice to alter an arrangement already in place; and possibly a tax specialist to unwind past events if the legislation allows. A good independent financial adviser works with good quality

specialists in these fields, to help provide a holistic approach to financial planning.

The Great War in Whittlesey - by Connor Martin Part 7: Archibald Warner Royle The looming General Election promises to make this a historic month for the UK, and with talk of opinion polls, party leaders and elections seemingly inescapable at present, I’d like to once again cast your focus back to the First World War. If we head back one hundred years to June 1917, we find that Whittlesey was once again fortunate enough to report no fatalities of its residents in the Great War. With this being the case, I’m going back a little further to January 1915 and the story of Archibald Warner Royle, who was not actually born in Whittlesey, but worked at the workhouse in Eastrea Road.

have been responsible for checking any parcels and searching male inmates suspected of carrying prohibited articles. (The matron would be called for searching female residents). Whittlesey’s workhouse stood on the site of Sir Harry Smith Community College and was demolished in the late 1930s.

At the same time as working at Whittlesey Workhouse, Royle was also a regular in the Army and he rejoined his 1st Battalion Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) when the call to arms was announced on August 4th 1914. It is believed he went to fight with the British Expeditionary Force at Mons in mid-August, and was then stationed in northern France.

It is not known what else Royle was involved in during his time on the Western Front, but he did not live to experience much of the conflict – he was killed by artillery on January 22nd 1915 (fourteen years to the day that HM Queen Victoria’s funeral procession took place, for any history buffs who may be interested!).

Royle was born in Bromley, Kent, to William and Lucy Royle. His exact date of birth is unknown, but he was twenty eight when he died in 1915 and so his year of birth can be assumed to be around 1887. Limited information is available of Archibald Warner Royle’s life between his birth and July 1914, but what we do know is that at the outbreak of war he was a porter at Whittlesey Workhouse, and his wife was a laundress.

It was the porter’s job to man the entrance to the workhouse, and prevent any unauthorised person from entering or exiting. He would keep a book of all people who came and went, and would also

This is once again a stark reminder that the most powerful weapon of a First World War battlefield – artillery - killed quickly and indiscriminately in a war that reached far across Europe and, as of April 1917, America too.

NOTE: In the March 2017 article I stated that Charles and Harry Popely were brothers. This information had come from data from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and was assumed to be correct. However, after being contacted by a relative of the Popelys and having since spoken to the CWGC, I would like to state for the record that Charles and Harry were uncle and nephew, not brothers. I must stress that the CWGC is a very valuable source and mistakes like this are rare; the cause of the error is now under investigation, but it is very possible that it originates from a mistake in the British Army records from the First World War.

Local Tangent Club Celebrates 30 Years The Whittlesey and District Tangent Club is celebrating its thirtieth year with an evening of celebration at the Falcon Hotel.

The group is marking its Pearl anniversary with an event called ‘A Passion for Pearls’, featuring guest speaker and pearl expert Frances Benton. Frances will present a lively and entertaining talk about the history, science, myths and legends of the world’s most secretive and only living gemstone, the pearl.

Going back over 5000 years, pearls have been associated with wisdom, power, wealth and beauty – qualities which guests will discover hands-on as they handle pearls of all colours, shapes and sizes.

Frances Benton is an experienced theatre-trained speaker, and promises you a fascinating and at times hilarious glimpse into a world of beautiful jewellery and mystery.

Parasites

Fleas, ticks, ear-mites, worms‌ these are all words that can strike fear into pet owners. However, the good news is that all are preventable.

There are many parasites in this country already, but more are now arriving, either via unscrupulous puppy breeders importing poorly bred and unhealthy animals, adoptions of rescue dogs from abroad, and a natural increase in the geographical area of the parasite.

How do I deal with parasites?

Fleas Fleas make your pets itch and will bite any mammal. They can cause dermatitis, transmit tapeworm and in severe cases can cause anaemia.

Fleas can be controlled, but it is preferable to prevent them. This can be done by spot-on treatment, tablets or impregnated collars. Homes that get infestations need to be treated with a spray to prevent pets becoming re-infested.

Ticks Ticks are blood-sucking arachnids that can transmit several nasty diseases. They attach themselves by burying their head into the skin. They have to be

removed carefully to include the head, otherwise there could be an infection at the site.

Lice There are various kinds of lice which can cause irritation. They can attach and bite all mammals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and even ourselves. These are very easily spread by direct contact or bedding.

Worms There are several types of worm, including tapeworm, round-worm, lungworm and heartworm. All have different symptoms and causes, but all are preventable. A very important worm to be aware of is Toxocara canis. This is found in dog faeces, and can cause uveitis and in exceptional circumstances, blindness - sometimes years later. This is one reason why it is important to clean up after your dog has defecated, and to treat your pets for parasites.

Local History

A History of Firefighting in Whittlesey - by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum

Before 1710 there were no official fire-fighting services outside London. Fire protection was provided by private companies for buildings that displayed their ‘Fire Mark’ plaque on an outside wall, to show that an insurance policy had been paid. Fire Marks for companies such as Sun Fire Insurance and Norwich Union Fire Insurance can still be seen on some old houses in Peterborough and the Fens.

The first public fire station in Whittlesey was built in 1825. The present Town Hall was designed to provide an upstairs meeting room with space underneath for fire-fighting equipment and pumps. This building (now Whittlesey Museum) still bears the ‘Fire Engines’ signs on the front elevation.

During the 1800s, Whittlesey Urban District Council operated a Merryweather Manual Fire Engine pulled by a horse fetched from a nearby field. The pump was operated by four firemen and filled with water taken from nearby wells or dykes in leather buckets. Leather was used because it was lightweight, but just as waterproof as wood or metal for a short time, especially when coated with pitch inside.

The hand-powered pump was tiring work, and spectators were often asked to take a turn – they were rewarded with metal tokens entitling them to a pint of beer for one penny. Firefighters also used brass siphons, which could suck up water to squirt it into first floor windows, whilst long metal fire hooks were used to pull off smouldering thatch and break up burning straw bales.

The fire crew wore thick woollen jackets, armbands and brass helmets based on those once worn by French cavalry. The distinctive crest on top of the Merryweather helmet protected the wearer from falling debris and could be replaced if it got damaged. Brass helmets were used until mains electricity became common and made the conductive metal too dangerous.

Motorisation came in 1933 when the manual pumps were replaced by a power-driven pump mounted on a trailer and pulled by a Ford lorry. The Whittlesey Fire Brigade also moved to newly built premises on Inhams Lane.

Due to the threat of war, a local Auxiliary Fire Service (A.F.S.) was created in 1938. In Whittlesey, Coventry Climax trailer pumps were bought in and pulled to fires by private cars belonging to Messers. Newman, Greatorex,

Anthony and Lea. In 1941 the A.F.S. was replaced by the centrally-run National Fire Service; at that point Whittlesey’s 1933 pump was declared obsolete and allegedly dumped into a local clay pit.

After 1948, nationalised fire-fighting services mostly went back to a countyby-county basis. However, the newly-formed Cambridgeshire Fire Brigade did not initially operate a fire station in Whittlesey.

The two-storey fire station on Cemetery Road in Whittlesey opened in 1967, and currently houses one Dennis Sabre water tender fire engine. It celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.

For members of the Whittlesey Wind Ensemble, their musical instruments are an enviable accessory to flaunt as they make their weekly evening journey to rehearsal. And they’re not the only ones displaying their band geek pride – did you know that Clint Eastwood is an accomplished pianist; that Bill Clinton isn’t too bad on saxophone; and that Julia Roberts played oboe and clarinet in high school?

Established in 2012, Whittlesey Wind Ensemble is a local, independent band run by its members and committee. The ensemble comprises musicians of all ages and backgrounds and is renowned for its high quality performances. The band’s diverse music repertoire aims to appeal to all age groups, ranging from themes from films and shows to classical musical and military marches.

If you or a family member are interested in joining a local band, then look no further. We welcome players of all ages who are Grade 4 standard or above. Our rehearsals have a relaxed and social atmosphere that would suit all musicians, from advanced players through to newbies, and we’re the perfect band for those who perhaps haven’t picked up their instrument in a while, and want to get back into performing with a group.

Being part of a musical band is fun, rewarding and extremely therapeutic. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages is the opportunity to meet likeminded people. Band member Lydia explains what first attracted her to the group.

“Having moved from Essex in 2014 I was keen to meet others in the area, and joining Whittlesey Wind Ensemble has been a fantastic opportunity to make new friends. Green-Fingered Pupils Enjoy New Vegetable Beds The pupils at Alderman Jacobs Primary School have been very busy recently, planting a variety of vegetables in their new raised beds.

Over Easter, Forterra came onto site and built six new beds for the children to grow their own produce in, and now that the frosts are finally over we have begun to plant seedlings.

Later in the year we are looking forward to harvesting these and using them in our school kitchen or classrooms. We are very grateful to the company for their work and contributions, and look forward to many years of growing.

A Super Day for Park Lane Pupils Year One pupils from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School had a brilliant start to their new topic by taking part in a superhero day.

All the children and adults in Year One came to school dressed as different superheroes. There were fabulous costumes from many different comics and films, plus real life superheroes like nurses and army soldiers.

Ben Chisholm, Head of Lower School, said, “The children took part in different superhero activities, but the highlight of the day was trying to rescue Mrs Flintoft, who was locked up in the poly tunnel! It was up to the children to solve mathematical problems in order to gain the secret passcode to unlock her.”

“Luckily for Mrs Flintoft, the children worked well as a team and she was rescued before too long!”

We are very lucky at Park Lane to have such dedicated teams working within each year group to support our themed days.

The Local Music Scene

Get Set, Go! - by Dave Bailey

Following on from last month’s article about finding gigs, we now consider what to put in a set list and look at audience interaction.

Having secured a performance slot with a venue or event, the need to focus the material and stage act to the audience’s expectations is vital.

As a new or emerging performer, satisfying the venue owner is key to a repeat booking, and this depends on getting the crowd going. Band brand recognition for original material is a slow process and can only be achieved over time. You may have many original songs that sound great in the comfort of an open mic gig, but bear in mind that most pub gigs have audiences that want to hear familiar songs, with the odd original thrown into the mix until your material becomes familiar.

The building of a good set list has similarities to any form of construction: solid foundations, quality material and a topping out ceremony.

If you have committed to a two-set format, you will need to twice wind up the energy to a point where the last song in the set leaves the crowd wanting more. Always save the best four songs in each set until the end, but grab their attention by starting off with a number that has a solid beat and good chorus. Then slowly build the set with increasing tempo and track contrast.

The combination of tracks should provide contrast, and avoid too many songs with the same rhythm or tempo throughout each set. Back in the Disco era, the constant 120 beats per minute was a floor-filler, but so repetitive! Try to avoid back-to-back songs with similar chord structures unless you are going to mash from one into the other.

Once you have the crowd interacting – and if a song has a familiar sing-along chorus – invite the audience to join in. Some classic tracks have clap/ stamp sections for that purpose, and if it falls within your style, it’s a good way of bonding with the audience and developing a following. If you’re performing at a dance or party with couples attending, you may also need the odd couple of slow numbers towards the end of the second set.

If it’s a free-to-enter pub gig, remember to introduce the band and members during the latter part of each set. Some of the audience may leave before the final song, but this is not necessarily a reflection of your performance; not everyone is a night owl, and your pub may be one of many on a night out!
