I was intrigued to hear about a memorial taking place at Coates next month, dedicated to the memories of several servicemen killed in a place crash over Benwick, over seventy years ago. WW2 historian Darren Bond, told me about the tragic events and about the memorial – the culmination of over two years’ hard work and research. It’s a poignant but fascinating story, that you can read about in this month’s Community Matters section.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Technology and Your Brain This article is a summary of the article published in the Science and Technology section of the BBC’s Focus magazine, November 2016, titled Is Technology Changing Our Brains? We have chosen to summarise this because it clearly and succinctly sums up the current research in this area. Intrigued?

Read on!

The reality is that our brains do change when we use any tool, be it a smartphone, computer, or screwdriver! So the real question is, “How are our brains adapting to living in today’s screen-first, always online, networked world?” We are a long way from definitive answers, but research has been conducted to start to understand how our brains are being affected in certain key areas: Attention: Many believe that the incessant bombardment from technology, and the need for instant answers, has eroded our ability to focus.

Mood: Heavy use of the internet, particularly social media, has been linked to loneliness and depression. Social media can encourage people to feel inadequate due to a high consumption of idealised images.

Memory: We use our devices to tap into a diverse range of information, such as facts, routes and phone numbers. We are therefore becoming less

reliant on our memory. It has been said that those addicted to the internet or gaming have shown shrinkage in the brain’s grey matter. More research needs to be carried out on ‘real’ as opposed to ‘addicted’ internet users.

Sleep: Technology keeps us up for two reasons: firstly, through the stimulating content, and secondly, through the blue light emitted by the LED screens, which prevents the brain from producing the sleep hormone melatonin.

Reading: Again, more research is needed in this area, but it is said that when reading on a screen we tend to skim read, scanning and clicking on hyperlinks, rather than ‘deep reading’. Therefore we don’t take as much from the text.

Multitasking: Our ‘always on’ culture has made us more skilful at multitasking. However, when we multitask the knowledge acquired is less deeply embedded in our memories.

Navigation: GPS users have less grey matter in the hippocampus than those who navigate without GPS. In summary, although more research needs to be carried out in this field, there is growing evidence that our brains our adapting to living in an online world.

Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Hello all

Protecting Vulnerable Residents in Whittlesey By being a ‘Good Neighbour’, we can all help to protect our more vulnerable residents from scams and rogue traders. The Community Protection Team have introduced the Good Neighbours scheme to discourage cold callers and to give residents the confidence to say “no” to uninvited sales people – helping to prevent people falling victim to distraction burglars and rogue traders.

It is recognised that community-led action is the most effective way to protect local people.

Indeed, the best prevention and support for residents comes from within their own community.

We can offer a range of materials for residents, including door stickers, advice on how to spot a rogue trader and tips to prevent unwanted mail and phone calls. We invite a local coordinator to disseminate this information and look after their area on behalf of its residents. Would you be willing to help? If you feel you can - even if your time and ability is limited - we would love to hear from you.

An area can really be reinvigorated with a little community action; just a good neighbour keeping an eye out makes all the difference.

While writing this article, I and many of the guests who attended our Charity Dinner at the Manor Leisure Centre are recovering from an absolutely fantastic function!

The guests were treated to a great meal and entertainment by the Skyliners group, and in the break a raffle and auction were held. The final total of cash raised for the Mayor’s charities has yet to be calculated, but the interim figures are very encouraging. The four auction items were donated by Making Waves, James Green, Huntingdon Racecourse and Steve Barclay MP, who kindly provided a bottle of House of Commons whisky personally signed by Prime Minister Theresa May. This is my last Civic Charity Dinner as my term as Mayor is coming to an end in May. The fundraising will continue, with the Duck Race to be held on Easter Monday. Tickets are on sale around the town and from the Whittlesey Town Council offices at £1 a ticket. At the end of my tenure, the Council will publish how much the generous public has helped to raise in the past year.

Over the past months we have received numerous complaints concerning the irresponsible dog owners who think it is okay to allow their dog to foul our footpaths and play areas, and make no attempt to clear up the mess. This is not just a local issue, but a national problem. As the Mayor of Whittlesey, I take issue with these irresponsible dog owners- if you can’t be bothered to look after your dog and clear up after it, don’t have one!

Funding for Schools and the GCGP LEP - Steve Barclay M.P.

J

ust over a month ago, we were one of just twelve areas nationally to win a place on the Department for Education’s flagship opportunity area programme, bringing £6 million of extra funding to Fenland and East Cambridgeshire schools, further funding for a new research school to help share best practice, and priority access to a wide range of other Department initiatives.

Since the announcement, I have met again with the Ministers and officials in the Department for Education, and written to all head teachers in the constituency, to update them on what the scheme means for our schools. Given how this scheme will impact on the opportunities for local children in Whittlesey, I thought it helpful to share a copy of my letter, which can be found on my website, for parents who wish to know more information.

I am continuing to work with Ministers on other education issues – such as improving mental health support for schools, and achieving a fairer national funding formula – and hope the extra information about the opportunity area programme will be helpful.

Many Discovering Whittlesea readers will know that throughout the New Year I have made repeated calls for transparency over conflict of interest concerns regarding the LEP. This month, I have written in my capacity as the Member of Parliament for North East Cambridgeshire to the Comptroller and Auditor-General of the National Audit Office, Sir Amyas Morse, asking for an investigation to be launched into the governance of the Greater Cambridge and Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and the Cambridge City Deal.

I have also written to the Government Minister responsible for LEPs, Andrew Percy MP, and to the

Chairs of two of Parliament’s most powerful select committees, the Public Accounts Committee and Treasury Select Committees, calling on them to also investigate the LEP. Further research has identified a number of potential conflicts of interest regarding multimillion-pound contracts linked to key LEP Board Members. There are also questions regarding how investment decisions have been reached, by the LEP Board and its sub-committees, and how close links between the LEP and a small number of developers have been managed.

There are also outstanding questions regarding serious allegations made by the LEP against their accountable body, Cambridgeshire County Council, and made against Fenland District Council.

These allegations remain unresolved and now need to be formally investigated by external parties.

I have always made it clear that I will continue to speak up for constituents, regardless of whether this involves challenging influential figures in our area.

Flowers for Happiness - Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin It’s time to shake off the winter blues, and open your doors, to welcome in the colours of spring. Time to dress the table, bake cakes and issue invitations to friends and family. Flowers play a big part when putting together a festive scene, and there is much debate in the interiors world as to whether you use fresh or faux. Faux flowers are so well made they’re often mistaken for real.

During my interior design training, we were advised always to include a generous floral display when putting the finishing touches to a room. Now that we have so much choice, from silk blooms to dried flowers and faux greenery, the question is whether to stick with real or move to faux.

Followers of Feng Shui would say ‘use real blooms’ for strong healing energy and never put anything in your home that is ‘dead’, so dried flowers are out! Having said that, I find dried flowers very useful for aroma, as they’re so receptive to essential oils.

Naturally scented potpourri, whilst it comes in and out of fashion, will probably never lose its appeal.

There are many points of view. What’s better for the planet? What’s better for your spirit? Indeed, what’s better for your purse? Have you seen the fake flowers in Dunelm? Here’s a bouquet to please!

If you prefer not to use any of these, but like to have your flowers everlasting, perhaps painted onto accessories, then take a look at the designs from Anna Jacobs. She’s a talented artist and, having met her several years ago, I’m delighted to see her work selling in London’s top interior design store Heal’s. The lamp and cushion picture above are in a design called ‘Chinese Tree’, and you can choose the colour of the flex to match your room - it’s so joyful.

In conversations with other interior designers, I’m finding that many are “mixing it up”, using fresh blooms with good quality faux.

A tip from the experts: When you’re given the gift of flowers, or when you treat yourself (which should be all the time of course), make the display longer-lasting by adding in some faux blooms.

At Easter time, you can also have fun with other decorations as shown here on the right - maybe it’s time to buy some new crockery, or accessories, to lift the spirits!

Matters 70 Years on…

A Memorial to Servicemen Killed in Fenland Crash On May 12th 1944, fourteen US servicemen were killed in a two-plane crash in the fields near Benwick - now, over seventy years on, they are set to be commemorated during a special ceremony at Coates church.

Amongst those attending the event will be local mayors and dignitaries, and – all being well – a relative of one of those killed, all the way from America. Darren also hopes to organise a flypast to take place during the event.

Guests from far and wide will gather in the Holy Trinity churchyard on May 13th for the unveiling of a new memorial to those killed. The project is the result of over two years’ hard work by Darren Bond, who first learned of the crash when interviewing a US veteran around three years ago. A keen American Second World War historian, Darren was intrigued by his mention of a plane crash during a pre-D-Day training exercise over the local fenland countryside.

Do you remember the crash?

Darren is keen to hear from anyone who was around at the time, and who has any recollections or information about the accident. “I’ve been told that around ten years ago a local farmer claimed to have a piece of the plane wreckage, and I’ve heard from a few people who recall the crash. It was naturally big news for local people at the time, and I know many villagers would have rushed to see the crash site, and were involved in helping clear up. If you have any information or memories of the crash, I’d love to hear from you.”

He began to research the accident and quickly realised that what little information was available on the internet was in fact largely incorrect, with some sites even recording the accident as having taken place in Berwick. After speaking to a local historian, Darren gradually began to build up a picture of the twelve air crew and two paratroopers killed, and set about planning a memorial in their honour.

April Gardening Tips We should now be feeling the benefit of the longer days and hopefully some warm sunshine, but beware, there is always a threat of night frosts.

Although April is a lean month for fresh vegetables, it is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter months, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. However, if you are tempted to get sowing, it is still risky as it may be too cold for the seeds to germinate; the allotment will always catch up eventually and reward your patience with a bumper harvest.

A more useful job this month is to prepare seed beds ready for sowing. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly. Soil should be broken down into small even particles, stones and woody material removed, raking the soil over until you get a fine ‘tilth’; don’t rake when the soil is too wet. If you are sowing, remember - if the soil is dry, water the base of the drill generously before sowing; if it’s wet, sprinkle a thin layer of sand before sowing.

You can sow a number of seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli and sweetcorn are just a few. Brassicas can be planted outdoors in nursery beds or in modules or pots. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules,

and they have grown a couple of ‘true leaves’, prick them out and move them to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny days, but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.

Jobs to do this month include: • Earth-up early potatoes.

• Plant second early and main crop potatoes and onion sets.

• The majority of root crops can be sown now and it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips.

• Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves.

• Don’t forget to regularly hand-weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture.

• Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to draught damage.

Adding a mulch around the base will help.

• Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans.

• Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft.

If you’re looking to buy your home, here are a few handy tips from us at Malcolm James Whether you are looking for that first home, upsizing, or downsizing, come and get to know us and make sure we understand exactly what you are looking for. Be proactive and chase us every now and again.

This will make sure you are at the forefront of our mind whenever a new property comes to the market.

It’s always good to line up a good solicitor from the outset. Get recommendations from friends, family, colleagues or even us. Don't necessarily opt for the cheapest either - it could prove to be a false economy. And just like keeping in touch with us, also keep in regular touch with them.

When it comes to arranging your finances, do your own research to see what mortgage deals you can get. Price comparison websites can be a great resource if you have the time to keep checking them.

Alternatively, find a good mortgage broker and again get recommendations from friends, family etc.

It is advisable, however not always necessary, to have a written 'in principle' mortgage offer from the start, as this can really speed things up once you have an offer accepted. Likewise, you'll be in a much stronger position if you find yourself in a bidding war with a buyer who doesn't have their finance in order.

Budgeting is so important when looking to buy your home. Set a budget and stick to it. There are many other costs to consider outside of buying the property itself, such as stamp duty, solicitor's fees, removal costs, any work that may need doing on the property, the first month's council tax and utility bills, service charge and ground rent etc.

Although many people look to buy in an area they think they know well, do your research. Fully research the area you are interested in buying in. Think carefully about the things you need and the things you would like, such as good local schools, transport links, green spaces, shops etc. Research the types of properties that are available in your price range and be realistic about your expectations.

When it comes to viewings it is best to try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to viewing times.

Evenings and weekends may be best for you, but possibly not the seller. It might be worth taking a day or two off work and lining up multiple viewings.

Always be punctual for all your appointments, otherwise you risk missing your slot and annoying the seller, who is likely to have gone to some effort to get the property ready for you. It is always advisable to view the area around the property a couple of times and do so at different times of the day, so you get a real feel for what it is like.

After the viewing, be sure to give us your honest feedback. That way, we get a better idea of what you will and won't accept - what things you could compromise on for the perfect location, garden etc. Keep an open mind though; very often, people end up buying something that is very different to the 'dream' home they imagined. It can also help the vendor, should they need to do anything to make the property more appealing.

When you make an offer, it is essential you let us know your position, like how flexible you can be on moving dates and whether or not you have a mortgage offer. If you really love the property, try not to make very low offers that will no doubt be refused. You could end up annoying the seller and this might make future negotiations that bit harder.

After your offer has been accepted, the first thing you will need to do is get back in contact with your financial advisor who will then start the next stage which is to arrange a survey. These can take a few days or more, and you’ll want to make sure you keep the process moving. We will be there alongside your solicitor to guide you through the whole process to completion.

Tips for moving in date: try to avoid moving on a Friday. The roads tend to be busier and removal firms often charge more because Fridays are the most popular time to move. If you can, take some time off work and move mid-week. On moving day, it’s a good idea to make sure you have a box with all the essentials like milk, sugar, tea, coffee and some toilet roll close to hand.

Join Whittlesey Lions for Charity Golf Day Whittlesey and District Lions Club will be holding their annual Golf Day at Ramsey Golf and Bowls Club on Wednesday April 12th. The President’s chosen charity this year is No Gain No Pain UK (NGNPUK), and we aim to raise enough money to purchase another syringe driver for use in our community.

An Update from Street Pride Earlier this year, fifteen of us turned out on a very cold and frosty Saturday morning to assist the “Friends of the Cemetery” group to clear the cemetery of litter.

We found an unbelievable amount of rubbish (as seen in the photograph) and this litter had been blown in from the surrounding streets.

On April the 19th we will be holding our AGM at the Manor Leisure Centre, at 7.00pm. If you are interested, please come along - you will be made very welcome. Our statistics tell us that since April 2016 we have worked 543 hours, collecting 293 bags of rubbish… not a bad effort!

News from Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I. The March meeting of the Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I. featured a wonderful display of hats being both made and worn! Members enjoyed wearing a wide variety of styles and colours, and we saw a wonderful demonstration of unique hats being made.

We are holding four extra fun competitions throughout the year, and the first was held at this meeting. Lots of cakes, biscuits and craftwork pieces were entered. We continue to hold our regular monthly competitions as well, March’s being, of course, hats!

Both the July outing and the next lunch are being discussed. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month in St. Andrew’s Hall, Parkinson’s Lane, at 7.30pm. New members are always welcomed.

There was no meeting in January, but February’s meeting featured a lovely talk from Jeni Cairns, a local artist and garden designer who has enjoyed great success at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. Jeni also designed the village’s fantastic new sign, which was unveiled last year.

Our March meeting was a very informative talk by Dawn Styles on the advantages of using essential oils, leaving us amazed at how they can benefit us in so many ways. The guest at April’s meeting (on the 5th) will be Chris Carr, speaking about cosmetics in Roman times.

Church Matters

Holy Week and Easter: Palm Sunday April 9th to Easter Sunday April 16th Our pilgrimage through Lent reaches its highpoint with Holy Week and Easter. Recalling the events of Jesus’ last week, we are led into the glorious celebration of Easter Day, the Day of Resurrection – the day we declare “Jesus lives no more to die.” Taking part in Holy Week and Easter makes demands on us both physically and spiritually, but God’s gift to us is a renewed and deepened faith which will take us through another year.

Each service, at least in part, can be traced back 2,000 years to the time of Jesus and the services he knew. Elements in our services also come from Jewish services and are up to 3,000 years old; the Passover meal, for instance, elements of which form part of our Holy Communion service.

As we recall the activity of Jesus in his last week, we are recalling what God has done in our world – Jesus is God and Man, the Word made Flesh.

Through Jesus’ activity we witness the activity of God himself. This is the incredible claim which lies at the heart of Christian faith, Holy Week and Easter.

Palm Sunday: Gospel of Matthew chapter 21: 1-11 Jesus enters Jerusalem – palm crosses will be blessed in church and available to collect through the week.

Holy Thursday: Gospel of Matthew chapter 26: 17-56 The Last Supper and the betrayal of Jesus – at your evening meal, pause and reflect on God’s gift of Holy Communion: His divine presence in the gift of bread and wine.

Good Friday: Gospel of St. John chapter 18, verse 1 to chapter 19, verse 42. Pause in prayer with those gathering at the Buttercross at 10am, and between 2pm and 3pm join with all those in church recalling the death of Jesus.

Holy Saturday: In the evening join in with the Vigil, remembering your own baptism and asking what it means to you. Turn to your Bible and read your favourite passages, recalling the divine activity of God in the world.

Easter Sunday: He is risen from the dead – we should think of nothing else this day. Come to church and worship the Risen Lord.

Consider the Facts During my youth, Easter, for whatever reason, would see even those who normally never darkened the doorway of a church feel a compulsion to go. I must say I was not one of them; sadly, a lifeless church had left me convinced that God was irrelevant. I suppose that’s why I’m passionate about our church remaining relevant in the community.

Recently, various sources have attempted to marginalise the message of Christianity, and restrict its freedom to teach the life-changing truths of Scripture on which countries like ourselves and the USA came to greatness. This Easter, I ask you to consider two simple facts.

Just over 2000 years ago, while those willing to submit certainly prospered, Roman rule dealt ruthlessly with those challenging its laws. Yet why was even the military might and intellect of Rome powerless to stop the teachings of Jesus Christ, the

Son of God, from growing? After all, in their eyes he was only a carpenter’s son from a small, obscure town. It tried burning, crucifying and throwing His followers to the lions, but nothing worked. Finally, on that Easter morning, because the tomb where Jesus had been placed was found to be empty, they sought to convince people that someone had stolen it - a likely story, especially since Rome would painfully kill any soldier who had lost what they were supposed to guard. There is in fact more to prove the Easter message is true than there is to disprove it.

Last year, at our Easter celebration service, the various departments in our church excelled themselves with their imaginative and inspiring presentations. No pressure guys, but let’s take it to new heights this year! Why not come and experience a fantastic welcome while you enjoy it with us, on Sunday April 16th at 10.45am?

Setting Up a Microsoft or Google Account Since our article last month, we have had lots of questions about Microsoft and Google accounts. What are the benefits, if any, of having these accounts? What if I want to use the services provided by Microsoft or Google, but don’t really want another email account? We’ll try and answer these, and any other questions you might have.

Firstly, you do not have to have another email account, as you can use your existing email address to open accounts with either service.

which will be sent to your main account, and when you click on it your new Google/Microsoft account will be activated.

If you do want another email account, then the benefit of a Google (Gmail) account is the near unlimited storage capacity Google provides. However, as I said, you can have either a Google or Microsoft account opened using your existing email address. It really is important when opening either one, or both, of these accounts, that you use different passwords, so that you will have more security. If one password is stolen or ‘hacked’, it will not affect other accounts.

Another issue that has faced a few clients this month is poor Wi-Fi reception within their home.

This is very easily and quickly remedied by installing a ‘Wi-Fi extender’. This is a device that is plugged into your home electrical socket and, after being set up, will re-broadcast your Wi-Fi so areas previously not reached will have excellent reception. We will come and install this at your home for you at a very modest cost.

Once an account is opened you can then use the facilities that both Google and Microsoft provide for storing your preferred settings and details. This means that when logging in to your account on other devices, you will have the same information presented to you.

Both services will give you access to various additional apps that will work across your different devices, such as Calendar, Documents, Cloud Storage, Photo Storage and many others.

You will also have unlimited access to the apps provided through the Microsoft and Google app stores.

I could go on, but to summarise, it really is very worthwhile to open these accounts; and, remember, you can do this just by Googling ‘open a Microsoft/Google account’ and then going through a few simple steps. You’ll follow an email

Finally, I would like to tell the story of a customer who came in very concerned that she had received an email stating her PayPal account was to be debited £56, and would then be debited £56 each month thereafter. If she had clicked on the link she would have been taken to a lookalike PayPal page, where she would be asked to enter her account name and password - following which, her bank account would have been quickly emptied. Remember, only log in to your bank or PayPal account when YOU type the details in to your browser. Never, ever, click on a link and then enter personal details. This simple rule can save a lot of pain.

Spicy Beef and Watercress Salad Watercress is in season this month so make the most of its mustardy bite with this quick and easy salad.

Method 1 To make the dressing, place all the dressing ingredients in a bowl and stir well, until the sugar is dissolved.

2 Put the watercress, onion, and tomato in a mixing bowl, add the dressing and toss the salad. Set aside.

Coat the steaks with the peppercorns and season with a little salt. Cook under a hot grill for 6-8mins, turning once until medium rare. Set aside for 2 mins to rest and cool slightly.

5 Serve immediately and garnish with the sliced chilli.

Vintage Enthusiasts Promise Another Bus-y Day! The Fenland BusFest returns to Whittlesey on Sunday May 21st, featuring a huge array of vintage vehicles from up and down the UK. The buses will transport visitors around the scenic local countryside, taking in various towns and villages on route to the Fenland Classic Car Show, which this year takes place in Ramsey town centre.

The bus rides will also take in several local pubs, more details of which can be found in the event programmes available for £5 on the day – these will include a comprehensive list of timetables, vehicle entries and pubs on the route, allowing you to plan your day and maximise your enjoyment of the activities on offer.

Matters a word from the Royal British Legion Over 120 guests attended our recent Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation Evening, and it was a very successful occasion enjoyed by all. Congratulations to our hard working social committee. Our Member of the Year shield went to Mrs. Jean Devenish for all the work she does for the branch, especially collecting for the Poppy Appeal. Not only did Jean receive this award, but she was also presented with a County Certificate for collecting for the Poppy Appeal for the last ten years.

Other members awarded with ten year certificates were Les Amps, Rachel Thrower, Judy Darby and myself. A certificate for five years’ continuous service to the Poppy Appeal was awarded to Mr. Ken Fear at our March meeting, as he was unable to attend the Dinner Dance. These awards are for people who give up their time to stand outside in all weathers during Remembrancetide, collecting for us. Well done to you all!

Since our last update in December’s magazine, we’ve been concentrating on raising greater awareness of what we’re doing in the local area. We’ve had articles published in numerous local magazines and newspapers, as well as on various community Facebook groups, including in Wittering, Eye, Collyweston and Wansford.

In the coming weeks we’re holding several events to further raise awareness and funds. It’d be great to see as many people there as possible – every donation really does make a difference!

Easter Craft Fayre at Thorpe Hall – Sunday 16th and Monday 17th of April. During Thorpe Hall’s Easter Fayre we’ll be raffling a barrel of booze. All money raised will go towards providing another syringe driver in one of our local communities. We 44

Brighten up Quiet Sundays with Tea, Cake and Conversation

Sundays can often be the quietest day of the week. However, thanks to the national charity “Contact the Elderly”, Sundays can be a time for cake and conversation.“Contact the Elderly” organises free, monthly, Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged seventy-five or over, who live alone. The tea parties take place in local communities across the UK and allow older people the chance to get out of the house, make friends, and socialise, all whilst enjoying tea and cake.

The tea parties are organised by local volunteers, who give up a little of their time once a month, to bring friendship and companionship back into the lives of older people, very often getting as much out of the tea parties as the older people do. The same small group of older people and volunteers meet every month, which means friendships blossom and everyone gets to know each other well.

If you are aged seventy-five or over and live alone, then you may want to consider joining your local “Contact the Elderly” tea party group. They are completely free to attend and door-to-door transport is provided. Everyone is welcoming and friendly, and the tea parties take place every month of the year.

The charity is always looking for friendly volunteers who would like to give back to their local community.

You can volunteer with your car, and escort one or two local older people to the monthly tea parties, or you can host a tea party in your home, once or twice a year. You must have a downstairs toilet and less than three steps into your home.

Gladys, 82, said: “It’s the one day when you’re not stuck in the house on your own; you get to meet lots of really nice new people, and the atmosphere is always such a fun happy one. We talk about all sorts.”

The Importance of an Executor - by Kieren Cross

If you have made a will you should have appointed one or more people to act as your executor. Maybe you have been appointed as an executor yourself. In either case, you will appreciate the vital role an executor plays in the administration of an estate. Careful consideration is needed before you decide who you want to appoint as your executor, or before agreeing to act as an executor yourself.

What does an executor do?

An executor is responsible for gathering together details of the deceased person’s assets, (such as property, investments, shares, life policies, etc.), and all of their liabilities, (such as mortgages, loans, and credit cards). All liabilities must be repaid from the estate, and the net proceeds distributed in accordance with the terms of the deceased’s will. Quite often an executor is required to obtain a “Grant of Probate” (a sealed court document) before they can take many of the practical steps needed to administer an estate. The application to the Probate Registry for the “Grant of Probate” can be challenging, particularly if the deceased’s financial arrangements are not straightforward.

If a person's estate exceeds £325,000.00 in value, Inheritance Tax might also be payable, and the executor will be responsible for ensuring that the correct amount of tax is paid from the estate.

Once the “Grant of Probate” has been obtained, there will be assets to sell or cash in, and debts to pay, before the estate can be distributed, in accordance with the will. It can be a complicated and time-consuming process, with a typical estate taking several months to deal with.

Personal liability An executor has a number of duties and obligations to the beneficiary of a deceased’s estate.

Worryingly, any mistakes made by an executor in carrying out their duty can lead to them becoming personally liable, e.g. failing to pay off all the debts

of an estate or distributing the estate incorrectly among the beneficiaries. If an executor is unsure about their duties or obligations, they should always seek proper legal advice, from fully trained and experienced probate lawyers. We will be on hand, to guide you through the often difficult process of administering an estate, helping to avoid common pitfalls and relieving some of the burdens of responsibility.

Who should I appoint as executor?

You can appoint more than one executor in your will, but it must be a person that you can trust.

A close friend or family member is an obvious choice, but ensure it is someone who is comfortable with taking on the responsibility of an executorship.

Also, consider whether your executors will be able to work together. Disagreements between executors can lead to delays and increased legal costs.

You may wish to appoint a professional executor such as a bank. However, before doing so, you should always discuss the level of their charges. It can sometimes be an expensive option, with some High Street banks charging a percentage of the value of an estate. If you do not check carefully, the charges that such a professional executor would make, before agreeing to appoint them, may prove to be a mistake, for which your beneficiaries end up paying a high price.

Changes to Inheritance Tax

This month sees a potential increase in the value of an inheritance that can transfer tax-free.

Everyone normally has a personal allowance of £325,000 that can be used on any assets; a further allowance of £100,000 may be used against a residential property that the deceased has lived in. That means more of your estate can go to where it will do most good.

Local History

The Great War in Whittlesey - by Connor Martin Part 5: The Three Browns For the past few months I have shared different stories about Whittlesey residents who died fighting in the Great War. These articles have mostly concerned brothers; fallen soldiers who shared their family name in battle.

We continue this month on a slightly different theme, as we look at three people who also shared a surname, but who surprisingly were not related.

The story I’d like to share this month is of the three Browns - Charles, James and Samuel - who were unrelated, but who share the same tragic distinction: all three died in the war and are engraved together upon the memorial in Whittlesey.

Charles Brown was the first of the three to lose his life in the Great War. A Canadian national, he was enlisted for the 32 Battalion in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the 12th of December 1914, at Winnipeg in Canada.

After enlisting he was shipped over to the United Kingdom, where he stayed in Whittlesey, leaving behind his mother and father, Jonathan and Alice Brown, in Canada. He lived in the Whittlesey area with the rest of his battalion until he was sent over to France in early 1915, and it was there that Charles was shot dead on the 24th of April 1916, at the tender age of nineteen. He was buried at Woods Cemetery in Belgium. A young soldier who stopped at Whittlesey en route to the Western Front, Charles never saw the town for a second time.

became a member of the 6th East Kent Regiment. Samuel is believed to have been present on the first day of the Somme, at Hencourt, and was stationed within the large catchment area of the Somme for an additional three months. It was on the 7th of October 1916, as the 6th East Kent Regiment were being moved north to Arras, that Samuel was shot, and he died that night from his wounds. His name was engraved on both the Thiepval and Whittlesey memorials.

The final Brown, James, was a Whittlesey resident who enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. Not much is known about James, but he is believed to have been a private in the 1/5th Northumberland Fusiliers.

What is known is that James died from shellfire on the 16th of April 1918, and was buried at the Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension, in Belgium. The final Brown died just five months before the end of the war, a stark

The second of the unrelated Browns, Samuel, was born in Whittlesey on the 14th of May 1889, to William and Eliza Brown of Stonald Road. Samuel lived a normal life until war broke out in 1914, when he enlisted in Whittlesey. He underwent a two month training course and

reminder that even during the final stages of the conflict, during which the Allies had the upper hand, there were still fatalities in the “war to end all wars”.

Thanks to Carole Dilorio, who got in touch regarding last month's article on Harry and Charles Popely: “My brother Steve and I were delighted to see our family featured in last month's magazine, although I must point out that the Charles and Harry who fought were not brothers, but uncle and nephew.

Harry and Eliza Popely had three sons, William, Charles (b.1884) and Harry (b.1887), plus a daughter Mary, aka Polly. Charles was our grandfather and the only one of the three sons to live past 1917; he married Constance in 1918, and they had our dad Charles Henry, aka Harry, in 1921.

The Charles who died as a result of being gassed in 1917 was in fact William's son, born in 1895 - which makes him the grandson of Harry and Eliza, not the son. Therefore the Harry and Charles discussed in last month's article were uncle and nephew, not brothers. Confusing, I know!”

Chocolate and Pets – Not a Good Combination!

As Easter approaches, there is nothing nicer than tucking into a tasty chocolate bar, and with Easter eggs and other goodies, we have more of it than usual in the house.

Our little four legged friends stare at us with those big brown eyes (or in the case of Weimeraners, blue!) and it’s all too tempting to break off a little bit and hand it over…

Please don’t!

Chocolate contains the powdered cocoa from cocoa beans, which is the seed of Theobroma cacao, originally from Central America. The Indians used to ferment the seed and make it into an alcoholic drink. This was introduced into Europe in the seventeenth century by the Spanish, who used it to make a popular drink.

Chocolate contains a substance called Epicatechin, and some studies show that it has a beneficial effect on the heart. “Great!” we hear you shout – but wait.

Why is chocolate harmful to my dog?

Chocolate also contains Theobromine, a stimulant which is fairly quickly metabolised and excreted by humans, but which takes up to 2-3 days to be processed by dogs. In this time it has the ability to do damage to your pet’s organs, and in a dog, the initial excitement stage from the stimulation produced by the chocolate can give way to vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle spasms, heart problems and coma.

All of the above symptoms are by no means going to occur if your dog happens to gobble up a dropped Malteser or Minstrel from the floor.

The severity of the intoxication is generally directly proportionate to the amount of chocolate eaten, the size of the dog and the amount of cocoa solids present. For instance, Green and Black's dark chocolate is far more toxic than a Galaxy bar, due to the fact that the milk in the Galaxy 'dilutes' the amount of cocoa present.

If you have a suspicion that any chocolate has been eaten, it is a good idea to call your vet's practice for advice. If your pet has eaten chocolate, and it was within the last two hours, they may be made to be sick (this is the case for dogs, but not cats). They will probably require a blood test and be placed on intravenous fluids (IVF). Any longer than two hours, the chocolate will be in circulation and the treatment will usually involve IVF, controlling any seizures if present, monitoring and time.

We know it's not always easy when those adorable eyes are pleading with you, but please resist the temptation to give any chocolate to your pet.

Local History

Traditional Mole Catching in the Fens - by Jen Barback Many people nowadays have never seen a live mole, only their mole-hills.

The hills are created by these “gentlemen in velvet” as they dig out the underground tunnel networks where they spend their lives. Moles use their tunnels to gather earthworms and grubs for food, as these drop into the tunnel and cannot immediately dig into the hard-packed floor to escape.

Moles are classified as vermin because they cause damage with their digging. Mole runs can seriously weaken drainage embankments, potentially causing floods in the low-lying Fens. If they dig in a beet field or a field where the sewn seeds are small, they will greatly reduce crop yields. To protect the land, moles are trapped or poisoned – traditionally by mole-catchers called “Missen”.

The traditional fenland mole trap was made from a bent willow or hazel stick, soaked in dyke water to keep it bendy. One end was buried in the ground near a mole run at an angle, and the other end had two wire nooses attached to it. The nooses would be pushed down into the mole tunnel, then as the mole went through the noose, the pull on the end of the stick would make it spring straight and catch the mole. Later traps used a steel spring instead of wood.

Moles would usually be caught in the winter, between November and April, when they group

together and move from the open fields to dyke banks and roadsides. They use the same winter runs every year - in the fields moles can spread out, but as many as seventy-five moles have been caught in a single fenland run during the winter.

the constant fight against the moles was worth paying the fee. In the past, mole-skin was a popular fur for clothing and fenland molecatchers would wear waistcoats made from the skins of moles they had caught, and sell their spare furs to a warehouse in Wisbech. A local molecatchers’ fur waistcoat can be seen in Whittlesey Museum.

Today there is no demand for mole-skins, so dead moles are either thrown away, or sometimes hung along a fence so that the farmer can see how the money is being earned.

Not only did this keep the mole catcher in business, but it also made the farmers who employed them feel that

Garden is Green Again Thanks to Local Generosity The Early Years children at Alderman Jacobs have been thrilled by the transformation of their outdoor learning zone from a muddy bog to a high-tech grass area, courtesy of A1 Artificial Grass of Whittlesey.

When one of the children found it too difficult to manoeuvre her wheelchair over the area, the School Council stepped in to write to local

businesses to see how they could help us. Mr Nightingale of A1 Artificial Grass, whose own children used to attend AJS, kindly offered to provide the materials at cost and fitted the grass too. The children can now safely enjoy the area all year round.

A huge thank you to A1 Artificial Grass for their fabulous support!

Plucky Pupils Conquer Caythorpe Fifty two brave Year Five pupils from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School recently visited Caythorpe Court, where they spent five days team building and pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone to achieve some tough physical challenges.

The students challenged themselves with a variety of activities, including the high ropes, climbing wall, vertical challenge and abseiling. Teamwork and trust were essential to the achievement of several activities, and the children pushed themselves to their limit.

The programme of activities continued into the evenings, which included a game of ‘Ambush’, ‘Robot Wars’, a quiz night and ‘Wacky Races’.

Spotlight On...

Whittlesey Indoor Bowls and Sports Complex

O

n Saturday February 11th, Mrs Mel Gowler, from McCain Foods, formally cut the ribbon to open the new Sports Complex of The Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club. With assistance from McCain Foods, the Amey Foundation, the Sports Lottery, local supporters and investment from the Bowls Club, some £100,000 was raised to refurbish the former Petanque area to make it suitable for a range of alternative sports and social activities.

The event attracted over two hundred people, who witnessed the official opening in the presence of Mayor Alex Miscandlon, Councillors Rita Jolley and Eamonn Dorling and many other local supporters.

Guests were invited to try their hand at table tennis, Kurling (a sport similar to curling, but played on smooth indoor surfaces rather than ice), badminton, and Short Mat and Carpet Bowls. They were entertained with a demonstration of martial arts by the young members of the “Immortal 365 Martial Arts Academy”.

Also in play were four of the five indoor bowls rinks.

These are utilised for four or five sessions per day throughout the week, catering for the current membership of two hundred and fifty players.

Such was the interest in indoor bowls that an 70

additional three week course of training is being introduced for potential members.

The intention is to attract a range of alternative sports or social organisations to utilise the new facility, and broaden the availability of activities within the town.

Interest was shown in trying walking football, walking netball, social badminton and beginners’ yoga.

The Whittlesey Table Tennis Club and U3A are already making good use of the table tennis facilities, and any other clubs or individuals interested in using the hall, joining an activity of forming a club can contact Alan Cox, the Hall Manager at the Bowls Club, on 01733 202209 or 01733 204244. The Local Music Scene

So you want to be a

Rock and Roll Star?

Following on from last month’s look at lessons and improving ability, we now think about how to progress from bedroom performer to your first public performance or broadcast.

Whilst the safety of the bedroom harmlessly retains the odd wrong chord or missed note, getting up and performing in public can be so scary! Collect all the items you will need for the performance for guitarists this includes tuner, capo, pics, spare strings, a spare battery for your tuner/guitar, and if semi-acoustic at a powered event, a spare lead.

Pianists and keyboard players need to check if the venue supports that format (most do welcome all instruments), and has a stage instrument if you play acoustic piano. Some keyboards do not have onboard speakers, so either prepare for plugging into the house PA or take a small amp. Brass/string/ percussion players should take spare reeds, strings and breakables.

As a starter, always try a safe venue catering for all genres and abilities. Once you find one that welcomes all levels, arrive in good time to get a slot. Always tell the host if it’s your first time.

Be prepared if you need the words, chords or notation, and check if there is a music stand (but take your own, if you have one, just in case).

Don’t try a brand new song written or tried only that day, as even if the audience does not notice any mistakes, you will - and you need to be as 74

confident as you can. Stand or sit comfortably so you feel at ease, and make eye contact with the nearest members of the audience, as some of those may also be first timers.

If you are playing one of your own compositions, a very short introduction will help set the scene and allow the crowd to relate to the song. If you have chosen a cover, say so, and explain if there is a reason for your choosing it. Don’t expect as a solo guitarist or pianist to replicate a studio sound. Just keep it simple and as accurate as you can.

When it’s time to begin, take a deep breath and relax into the introduction. It’s always nice once finished to say thanks to the audience, just for listening. Some venues allow performers to do two or three songs at each rotation, especially if powered, where changeover time is a consideration.

Other venues (usually acoustic events) do songs in the round, where you perform a single song before the next performer takes their turn, with as many rotations as time allows. These sometimes encourage joining in almost a “jam” session.

Now you’ve gained experience at open mics, the next step is gigs, festivals or local radio - and that is for next month. See you on the circuit….!
