Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

What’s the difference between a viral and bacterial infection?

With many of us suffering from winter colds and illnesses, this month, we revisit a subject we first discussed last year.

Bacteria are living organisms which can survive in most environments. Like all living creatures, they replicate when in an environment that suits their needs. Viruses, on the other hand, are simply a piece of genetic coding which can only survive by hijacking another organism’s cell. Once inside the cell, they change its function to suit their needs and then replicate it, thus creating an army of deranged cells!

These two different enemies, with their differing attack strategies, require different defence responses.

The bacterial defence strategy is simple - find out where they are, and attack them before their army grows. The viral defence strategy is more involved, as we have to identify which of our own cells have been turned, and then attack them. This is why, generally speaking, viral infections last longer.

It gets tougher still to fight off viral infections, as we do not get any help from medication. Although there is some progress with anti-viral medication, this is limited to the more severe viral infections such as HIV. Fortunately, where human technology is struggling, our bodies have devised a way. When a virus takes over a host cell, it will make a number of changes which invariably leave a mark. In a similar way, if I were to drive your car, I would alter your seat position or mirrors to suit my driving preferences.

Viruses are smart in that they only make changes to the inside of our cells, which means they look the same from the outside.

Thankfully, our cells have little windows on the cell surface which enable special cells (cytotoxic T cells) in our immune system to look inside and see what is going on. If they do not like what they see, they kill

the cell. Some viruses have wised up to this trick and black out the windows, thus evading the cytotoxic T cells. However, humans have not lasted millions of years without a backup plan! Natural killer cells are immune cells that count how many windows each cell has. If it detects a cell with a few windows blacked out, it kills it, no questions asked!

Fighting a bacterial infection is a similar process.

The bacteria does not use camouflage, and so it is a straight-out fight between it and our immune system. We have antibodies which float around and are trained to recognise the bacteria. Once they find bacteria, they attach themselves to it, thereby marking it. They also do one of two things.

Firstly, they kick-start a series of chain reactions which results in the production of chemicals designed to severely damage or kill the bacteria cell it is clinging on to. Secondly, it sends out a distress signal to our immune cells, which identify the antibody and eat it and the bacteria that is attached. Once it has chewed on its meal, it displays a piece of its meal on its outer surface.

The reason for this is to attract another immune cell, which in turn kills the phagocyte. This way, the body makes doubly sure the bacteria is dead!

To recap, the symptoms of bacterial and viral infections can be similar, but because they attack us differently, we attack them differently.

Thank You from Sudbury Court Sudbury Court is a sheltered accommodation complex for adults aged sixty and over, and has a Residents’ Committee which holds a fundraising Christmas bazaar every year. This event raises funds for the benefit of residents, contributing to things such as their Christmas dinner, Christmas party and general comfort throughout the year.

Extravaganza in Crisis: We Need Your Help

By Shirley Wright, Secretary of the Whittlesey Extravaganza Committee The Christmas Extravaganza Committee hope that you have enjoyed the annual event organised by us for the second Friday of December. We have organised it for twenty one years now, and although the members of the Committee have changed over that time, the current organisers have given a lot of years.

The whole idea of the event is to give the community at large a fabulous, festive family evening. However, this three-hour event requires countless unseen hours of form-filling, emails and phone calls. As we are all volunteers, the majority of the Committee are not prepared to continue in office.

So, at our Annual General Meeting in March, the Extravaganza Committee hits a problem: we will have no officers; no Chairman; no Secretary; no Treasurer; no form-fillers; no organisers; no Extravaganza.

If you have enjoyed our evenings of festive fun, and have time to spare, would you be interested in taking on the organisation?

Our Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday 15th March 2017 in Whittlesey Town Hall, Market Street, at 7.30pm. Interested parties, please attend! Bystanders are not required.

We Local businesses are invited to donate a prize to the Christmas bazaar raffle, and for 2016’s event, 1st Call Furnishings, of High Causeway, who have contributed in the past, donated a suite of bedroom furniture. The holder of the winning raffle ticket was given the choice of either £100 cash or the bedroom suite, with the residents having already decided that if the winner did not require the furniture, it would then be donated to the Court’s guest room. As the winner chose the £100, the furniture is now in place at Sudbury Court.

The Sudbury Court Committee was delighted with the success of the event, and would like to extend a huge thank you to all the Whittlesey businesses past and present who have donated to the bazaar.

No Need for Speed at the Field of Dreams Whittlesey Town Councillors have received many complaints about speeding motorists on the road that leads to the Field of Dreams. This road leads to the Route 63 cycle path, and is used by many cyclists and pedestrians.

We are determined to make sure that this road and cycle way is a safe area for the pedestrians and cyclists who use it. We therefore intend to install speed cushions along the road, to deter motorists from speeding.

Have Your Say on Neighbourhood Plan Whittlesey Town Council is beginning the process of developing a Neighbourhood Plan.

A Neighbourhood Plan will supplement Fenland’s Local Plan, and allow the Town Council and its residents to:

Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 09.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017.

• Have greater influence over planning decisions.

• Have more of a say on detailed matters than the Local Plan.

CHAMPIONING BUSINESS IN FENLAND - Steve Barclay M.P.

This

month, I had the pleasure of visiting the Whittlesey and District Business Forum lunch at Whittlesey Conservative Club and it was fantastic to see so many in attendance. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to all the business forum members over a pint (of orange juice!), especially about the exciting possibilities the new social mobility “opportunity area” award, and the subsequent extra £6 million funding it, could bring for our schools. I would like to say a big “thank you” to Councillor David Mason for organising the event; it is great to see such pro-active events taking place, bringing the business community together as one.

Staying on the theme of business, last month I raised concerns that Fenland was not receiving the funding from Cambridgeshire LEP it deserves.

Further concerns have emerged regarding the work of the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which receives millions from the Government to allocate to local transport schemes, skills training and supporting key sectors, such as Science and Agri-Tech, in order to deliver economic growth and create jobs.

I have identified a massive gap in funding for Agri-Tech in Fenland, compared with our neighbouring districts of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk, and East Cambridgeshire. The gap in funding appears much bigger than figures released by the LEP last month and may be even greater still, once grants from New Anglia are included.

Recently, the Government announced that this year the LEP will receive £12.8 million funding for innovation and regeneration, with the aim

of “spreading the benefit of the Cambridge Phenomenon” and expanding the Agri-Tech Programme. Fenland District Council should be pushing at an open door with the LEP, as a key area for programmes within this part of the funding, with businesses in Whittlesey capitalising on their existing rail connections to Cambridge, if we are to spread this growth beyond Cambridge as the Government seeks.

The announcement came as a package of £37.62 million funding for the LEP, including an Enterprise Zone which it stated should be in the north of the county. The press note goes even further, adding to “the north in areas such as Fenland”. This signal could not be clearer to Fenland to bid for this Enterprise Zone, and the signal could not be clearer for the LEP to support the bid. I hope to see Fenland benefitting from an Enterprise Zone that it so richly deserves, and needs, in the near future.

Matters Posh Frocks Replace Muddy Jodhpurs!

On Saturday December 17th, local equestrians swapped their normal attire of muddy jodhpurs for posh frocks and smart suits, at an awards evening hosted by Grey Fern Park Equestrian Centre.

Held at the Eastrea Centre, the event celebrated in style the achievements of riders competing during the 2016 Summer Season at Grey Fern Park.

During the night, trophies and shields were presented to the winners by Mr Alex Miscandlon, Mayor of Whittlesey, whose wife Pat has been an equestrian throughout their fifty years of marriage.

The celebration began with a speech by Events Secretary Carole Newton, who thanked competitors, supporters and sponsors for their continued support, which has helped events at Grey FernPark to flourish.

Over twenty trophies and shields were presented to riders and handlers in three separate equestrian disciplines - Showjumping, Dressage and Showing – and a total of five Championship titles were awarded.

Mrs Carolyn Furnell, riding Corwen Prince of Thieves, was named Ridden Showing Champion, and Mrs Trudy Boon, handling her miniature horse, Lady, was named In Hand Showing Champion.

In the Dressage section, the overall Champion was Ms Katie Humphrey, on Centaur Toospot. The Summer Evening Dressage League was won by Ms Anna George on her horse The Second Legacy, and Miss Georgia Sharp, riding Rose, was crowned the 2016 Showjumping Champion.

A raffle of generously donated goods and services was held after the presentations, raising over £200 for Redwings Animal Sanctuary.

Carole Newton said of the evening, “It has been a great success, and provides the perfect backdrop to thank all those who have supported us during 2016. We are very proud of each and every one of our competitors, with many of whom we have built up strong friendships, and it has been a privilege to be part of their equestrian journeys."

As promised last month, I begin by reporting on the Straw Bear. What can one say? Once again, the 2017 festival was blessed with wonderful weather and a truly fantastic display of dance. When I kicked off proceedings at the Manor, I was given a list of the dancers and their home towns, some of which I mentioned in my opening speech.

The largest cheer went up from the assembly when I announced that the four local junior schools from Whittlesey and Coates had entered dance groups. Their prowess at the dancing was recognised with a certificate of achievement, named The Squire’s Award, from Kemp’s Men of Norwich. This was presented to New Road Molly.

I am heartened by the younger generation of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages coming out to support local events such as Remembrance Day, Straw Bear and the Whittlesey Festival.

The Deputy Lord Lieutenant even mentioned to me that he was amazed by the attendance and involvement of the younger generation of Whittlesey, which bodes well for the future of these organisations. Well done to everyone involved.

Updates on the bridge at King’s Dyke are posted on Whittlesey Town Council website, and councillors receive regular updates from Cambridgeshire County Council. I’m pleased to say that at present, everything is on track (no pun intended!).

Once again, a reminder that the Council holds councillor surgeries at the Council offices in Grosvenor Road - dates and times are on the WTC website and in this magazine.

Your Garden

March Gardening Tips March has arrived, and now is the time to get busy in the garden! It’s all go from now on, as we start seed-sowing, preparing seed beds and tidying up.

will be emerging this month. You can also start planting summer-flowering bulbs, making sure to prepare the soil first to ensure that drainage is sufficient to prevent the bulbs rotting.

Plant shallots and onion sets at around 10cm apart in rows of 30cm, and don’t forget to leave the tops just poking through. Later this month, start sowing lettuce, parsnip, carrots, turnip, beetroot, peas and beans outside.

Primroses and polyanthus make a great show of colour in the borders and patio tubs at this time of year, along with miniature daffodils like tete- a-tete. With the weather warming up and new growth popping through, make sure you keep a look out for slugs and snails which will love the new tender growth.

• In your heated greenhouse, sow tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicum, aubergine and melons.

Summer bedding plants like lobelia, antirrhinums, petunias and marigolds etc. can also be sown now.

There’s still time to plant ornamental and fruit trees, shrubs and climbing and bush roses to give a glorious show of colour in the summer. Roses will benefit from being fed with a granular rose fertiliser as they come into growth.

Give your lawn a good rake over to remove any winter debris, then give it a mow, being careful not to cut it too low. Turf or sow grass seed to repair any bare patches.

The early varieties of potatoes can be planted in early March, regardless of whether or not they have been chitted beforehand, with the later ones being ready towards the end of the month. Remember, potatoes grow best in a rich, fertile soil with plenty of sun.

Prune your gooseberries and red and white currants, and plant blueberry bushes and strawberry plants for your own fresh and delicious fruit this summer. Now is your last chance to plant asparagus crowns.

• Early spring is an ideal time to plant herbaceous perennials. Many spring bulbs, like daffodils,

opefully, winter is receding and far more work can be carried out on the allotment or vegetable garden as the days are lengthening: the increase in hours of light triggers new growth.

Although it may not feel like it, temperatures slowly increase and the soil should start to warm up, particularly towards the end of the month. Although there are plenty of seeds to sow, it is worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast as we can still get some pretty cold weather in March and some heavy frosts.

If you have chitted your first early potatoes and the ground is not frozen, they can be planted out from mid-March or early April, but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Don’t forget to add a light sprinkling of fertiliser to the trench, and plant earlies about 30cm (12 inches) apart with 40 - 50cm (16 – 20 inches) between rows, with the shoots pointing upwards. Second earlies and maincrop need more growing space, so plant them about 38cm (15 inches) apart and 75cm (30 inches) between rows. When the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil.

If you’re short of space, try growing potatoes in an adequately drained container, (a dustbin works well) or you can buy special potato growing bags. Almost half-fill the container with multi-purpose compost or good quality, fertile garden soil.

Then nestle the seed potatoes into the top of the compost and cover. When the growth starts coming through, keep covering with soil until you reach a few cms from the top.

If you want to grow asparagus, now is the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench 12 inches deep and adding some well-rotted manure. Make a 4 inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting – it’s well worth the wait!

AS tempting as it may be to send that quick text or make that short call on your mobile – it is now worth remembering more than ever, that as well as being dangerous - using your phone whilst driving could cost you dearly.

Tough new laws brought in from March 1st 2017 by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000.

These new changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular, as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence, and will require them to retake their test.

It is illegal to use a mobile phone, held in the hand, whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on.

But, while it has been illegal since December 2003, research shows there has been a worrying shift in attitudes to mobile phone use behind the wheel.

The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a hand-held phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014.

It's a tricky one, but try and work around viewings. It really helps matters if buyers are able to view your home at a time that suits them. If not, there's the risk they'll see another property and forget yours.

If you have tenants in the property, give them plenty of notice about your plans and keep things friendly. That way, they're more likely to keep the place looking tidy and accommodate viewings.

If at all possible another nice touch is to leave any parking space you may have free for the buyer.

Something as simple as an easy park will help ensure they enter your home in a good frame of mind.

Avoid strong cooking smells and don't smoke in the house in the run up to viewings. Open windows and place a few bunches of fresh flowers around the house to freshen things up and demonstrate that you care about what the buyer thinks.

A Minor Setback – But Street Pride Project Will Go Ahead It’s not often that our gateway projects suffer damage, but unfortunately one of our latest projects recently received a visit from mindless vandals.

As part of our celebrations to commemorate our tenth anniversary, we will be installing a park bench on The Bower at a cost of over a thousand pounds. The concrete plinth for the bench had

been prepared, and looked a treat, but was visited by vandals overnight. These individuals scored the surface with their boots and threw the protection signs into the river.

Despite this setback we will continue to go ahead with the project, and we look forward to seeing the finished result.

News from Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I. Our February meeting featured Papercraft, and all ladies took a card holder home which we made on the evening. Many thanks to Gill for guiding us through the process of making them.

Several of our members gathered for a very enjoyable late Christmas lunch at the end of January, and the venue for our next lunch outing is already being sorted.

Our next meeting – “Bespoke Millinery” - is on Tuesday March 14th; please wear a hat!

New members and guests are always welcome. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at St Andrews Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

A Christian Message of Sharing and Acceptance I am writing this on Monday 6th February, and tomorrow we have our Churches Together Annual General meeting. I have been the chairperson for the last two years, and our current deputy chair, Nick, will have the choice to be elected as the chairperson for the next two years. Nick is a Methodist lay preacher and member of the Queen Street church. His church brings together the United Reformed Church and Methodist congregations in partnership.

Other members of Churches Together are St Jude’s Roman Catholic, the Salvation Army and the Church of England’s four parish churches in Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates. We aim as a group to do things together when we can, and support each other in prayer and understanding.

We come together on Good Friday morning for the procession and act of witness at the Buttercross. Queen Street join with the Church of England on Ash Wednesday and on Christmas Eve,

and we all join together for prayer and study in our Lent groups. Jointly, we raise funds for Christian Aid. Churches Together is not the only way in which our churches seek to draw closer together. Once before Christmas, and once since, all the Christian ministers in our town and district met together for a lunch of soup and sandwiches, and we aim to hold another similar meeting in April. Some had to give apologies, but all expressed a wish to join in.

Sitting together were Brian, Paul, Lesley, Rob, Michael, John and Nigel, with apologies from Roger, Nick and Georgina. All are ministers of the gospel to town and district; all share faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; each called by Jesus to serve in ministry here in this place; sharing a meal, just as Jesus did with his disciples and friends.

Please think about these expressions of Christian sharing and acceptance – especially when the news presents an opposite image.

Do You Have The Courage To Change?

During the course of my life I’ve met some amazing people who, against all odds, have radically changed their life. I’ve also met those who speak of being unhappy, but never do anything to change. I often asked myself – “what makes people complain, but do nothing?”

I used to think it was due to indifference or idleness; for some this might be so, but for others it was a deep seated fear that their hopes might be dashed, and they would be left feeling worse than before they tried. The fear of trying and failing often appears worse than daring to change their life.

For others - like myself before becoming a Christian - low self-esteem binds them to inactivity, and stops them believing they could ever achieve anything of significance. Finding the courage to change can be dramatic and painful, but the risk is worth it when compared to facing every day with unfulfilled desires for things to be different.

“The Wide World of Sports” television programme illustrated “the agony of defeat” with a painful ending to an attempted ski jump. The skier appeared in good form heading down the ramp, but then, for no apparent reason, he tumbled head over heels, then bounced off the supporting structure. What viewers didn’t know was that he deliberately chose to fall rather than finish the jump. Later, he explained how midway down the ramp he realised the jump surface had become too fast. Completing the jump could prove fatal, as he would land on level ground, beyond the safe sloping landing area. As it was, he suffered no more than a headache from the tumble.

Never underestimate the power of fear or low self-esteem, or belittle those suffering from it.

However, neither should those suffering from it run away from daring to change. Let us help you.

Worried about Upgrading Your PC? This month’s article comes from Charlie, our in-house technical specialist.

I have seen the concern of some people, and even real fear’, of having to learn how to use a new and different operating system such as Windows 10 which puts people off upgrading their PC. I see this on an almost daily basis and would like to give you more of an understanding of what is involved.

Firstly, if you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista your computer will be at increased risk of virus infection and of being hacked because since April 2014 Windows stopped support for Windows XP and as of April this year support will be withdrawn from Windows Vista – so you should seriously consider upgrading to Windows 7 or, better still, Windows 10.

However, this can only be done if your PC/Laptop meets the Windows 7/10 hardware requirements.

This may mean having your machine upgraded internally – we will be pleased to advise you on the best option to take.

Windows 10 is the latest operating system for PCs and laptops and has already been around for nearly two years, and is really very easy to use because the changes, at face value are, merely cosmetic – as everything is designed on the consumer’s love of previous versions of Windows.

These cosmetic changes mean the ‘Start Menu’ has been updated to look cleaner and are designed to merge with the online services Microsoft offers such as the Windows store for the ‘Apps’.

‘Apps’ is just the new term for what we used to call ‘Programs’. They can be downloaded from the Windows Store in the form of games or random services and can be manually installed from a distributor’s website just like with previous operating systems. So when you click in the bottom left hand corner of your screen on the ‘Start Menu’ all you are really seeing is the same ‘Programs’ you used to see but just presented to you in a more user friendly and clean way. So, go ahead and try them. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Eat the Season

SPRING GREENS Full of flavour and packed with vitamins C, E and K, iron, potassium, fibre and calcium, spring greens are this season’s superfood.

Even the stems can be used - they are actually sweeter than the leaf. Just slice them more thinly than the green parts. Here are some simple but tasty recipe ideas for them:

With Bacon or Pancetta

Heat a little olive oil in a pan, and fry the bacon or pancetta for a couple of minutes until browned. Add your sliced spring greens and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring continuously.

Season with pepper to taste. For some added flavour, you could try mixing some caraway seeds in with the greens, or some shredded wild garlic leaves.

With Pork or Chicken

Heat some olive oil in a pan and add in the chicken or pork.

Fry on one side until coloured (about 3 minutes) then turn and smear with a little honey and mustard if you wish.

Add some chopped fresh ginger, some sliced spring greens and a little lemon juice. Cook for another 3-5 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.

Season to taste, add some chopped parsley if you wish, then serve with buttered noodles or mashed potatoes.

Luckily our home is on top of our business, so apart from climbing the stairs many times a day, I was lucky to always enjoy my three daughters’ company when they were not at school. I’m not really sure whether being in business has helped my parenting skills, or being a mother has helped with my business acumen.

My husband Peppe and I work five days a week at Vesuvio, and manage family life with a lot of support from my parents, who live next door. I run the front of house while Peppe looks after the kitchen and the day-to-day food orders. I also manage the staff, invoicing and paperwork aspects of the business. Our eldest helps out a lot too; Italians are good at these things, and we all work as a team!

My husband David and I have recently celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary, and our eldest daughter, Zoe, will be thirty nine in October, so you can quickly see that business and motherhood have gone hand in hand for me!

As our business is retail, every day is different, and I get to meet lots of people with varying requests. There are also constant changes to the accounting needs, all of which helps the changes demanded by children. My three daughters are all in their thirties and they are all very capable women. They are all excellent at budgeting to make the most of their available cash, which I think in part comes from their years at home listening to me!

When our first grandson came along, to allow his Mum, our second daughter, to continue working as a nurse, we took on his childcare.

We employed less people by this time, and Jacob became quite well known with our regular customers. To this day, he loves to come and explore the shop!

I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed motherhood and business in a happy merging of abilities for so many years.

I’m sure any businessperson will tell you that running a business is hard – especially with two children!

Peppe and I have been married since 1997 and have two daughters: Martina, 17, and 12-year-old Valentina. Both children were born in Italy, as I lived there for eighteen years, and we are very proud parents. Martina was Head Girl at Sir Harry Smith last year, a role she carried out very well, and is now studying for her A Levels, while M A R CH 2 0 1 7

A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.

Valentina is in Year 8 and is also doing very well.

I was a school governor at New Road School when my girls attended (also helping out on the PTA), and I always donate to local causes where I can. Having grown up in Whittlesey I am proud to run a business here, and our mission has always been to offer good, authentic Italian food that caters for all tastes. October marked our fifth year in business, and we hope to be here for many more.

Although Vesuvio keeps us busy, we still find time to spend with our children, and Sundays are generally spent with family.

Running a business alongside raising a family can be hard, but we manage, and it’s the time spent with family that makes the hard work all so worthwhile. To us Vesuvio means “family”, and this is exemplified in our motto which is above our bar for all to see: “Enter as strangers, leave as friends.”

The running of our shop has always been a family affair, and I like to think some of the business experience has rubbed off on our daughter. Jade attended Park Lane and Sir Harry Smith, as did I, before moving onto Stamford College to study Business, and it was while studying that she would constantly call up companies to enquire about work experience.

Her persistence paid off, and by the time she had finished college she already had job interviews lined up. She started at Zazzle Media, Market Deeping, initially as an intern for three months, and now is the leader of the team! Like her mother, she worked her way up from the bottom and is now in a very successful place.

My first job was as a telephonist for Ouse Steel Ltd. at the age of sixteen, and I then joined the Council as a receptionist, a temporary six-month post that ended up lasting twenty two years! I met my husband Ian in June 1983, we married in September 1988 and Jade was born in 1994.

It had always been an ambition of ours to own our own business, and in early 1989, Ian decided that he wanted to be a floor layer, leaving behind a good, well-paid job for a step into the unknown. The business has gone from strength to strength, so much so that in 2011, we decided to launch our second company, 3D Grass.

Our dog, Elwood, joined the family in 2009, and he regularly spends time with us at work! My husband always said he wanted to be off his knees before fifty, and now with a team of fitters, the business continues to thrive. Jade’s partner, Curtis, joined us this year, with the view that one day they can take the reins from me and my husband (no promises that this will be any time soon!) and continue to run the family business.

Matters In it for the Long Run Daniel Swan, from Whittlesey, is running this year’s London Marathon to raise money for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Peterborough.

The 26-mile marathon, first held in 1981, will take place on April 23rd 2017.

Daniel aims to raise £2000 for the charity, and is putting on two events this month – a quiz night on the 10th, and a coffee morning on the 18th - to help him reach his goal. Both events take place at Childers, Station Road, and further details can be found in our Events Diary.

Make Mine a Half!

Mick Smith, from Whittlesey, recently had half of his beard shaved off in aid of Parkinson’s UK and Leukaemia CARE. Both charities are close to his heart, with his mother Anne Smith having sadly died recently of Parkinson’s, and his niece of leukaemia.

The shave took place on February 5th at the Black Bull, in Market Street, with friends, onlookers and even Miss Peterborough standing by to lend their support.

The deed was done by local hairdresser Nikki Cooke, from 'Making Waves', and after the shave the remaining half of the beard was partly dyed green, in honour of Mick’s favourite football team, Celtic.

Over £450 has so far been raised for the two charities, and Mick would like to thank all the staff at the Black Bull for allowing the shave to take place there. A special thank you goes to Jude for arranging the event.

News from the Royal British Legion Good news! The Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion now has its own website. With the assistance of member Scott McKevitt, a site has been built with the address www.branches.britishlegion.org.uk/ branches/whittlesey. Although still in its infancy, the site will eventually include up to date branch news, contact names and numbers and Poppy Appeal details, together with Remembrance information. At a recent county AGM, our chairman Mr. Ken Mayor received a Certificate of Appreciation for all the work he has done for the branch. Ken was the main driving force behind all the work involved in getting our flagpole placed at the memorial.

Well done Ken! At the time of writing this report, our social committee are all working hard preparing for our Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation evening.

All tickets have been sold, and I am sure that it will be a most successful evening. Full report and pictures will hopefully come in the next issue.

The Poppy Appeal continues to flourish, and we are indebted to a local family for their generous donation of £350.00, raised from a collection at a recent local funeral. Defibrillators for All Needs Your Help Defibrillators for All needs to raise £10,000 in the next four months, and we need your help!

Having raised money for over fifty public access defibrillators, we next turn our attention to our young people, to ensure the town is as heart safe as possible. On the 2nd and 3rd of June, we’ve booked the screening charity CRY. In these two days we’ll be able to screen two hundred young people aged 14-35 to detect any cardiac abnormalities. Around twelve to nineteen young people die suddenly each week in the UK of previously undetected heart problems.

Social media has been an invaluable tool in allowing us to spread the word about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Now, with more people aware that this could affect their own families, we want to highlight that they can help us to prevent these tragedies from happening.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2017: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK Men United in Song is back for 2017, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. The project will sign up a minimum of forty local men with a range of singing experience (including none!), to rehearse over twelve weeks for a gala charity concert on Saturday June 24th. Over one hundred men participated last year, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity.

Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising. There’s a fantastic social scene, too - after all, the Broadway Theatre has its very own bar! “The group of guys was amazing - everyone was made to feel welcome,” says Adrian Woodcock, who took part last year.

Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Broadway Theatre on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th and Friday 31st March (7-9pm).

Teachers’ Charity Efforts are in a Class of Their Own The words “school run” took on a whole new meaning on Friday February 10th, when two teachers at Sir Harry Smith Community College embarked on a treadmill marathon for charity.

Teresa Dolby and John Baldaro were raising money for two charities, Crohn’s & Colitis UK and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust. The marathon was designed to replicate the 26-mile London Marathon, which both will be running in April, and students and staff could even track their progress on a virtual London map.

Mrs Dolby, who has so far raised £1750 of her £2500 target, said, “Some of my nearest and dearest suffer with Crohn’s Disease. CCUK aims to help sufferers and their families in times of need, and is also working towards finding a cure for this horrible chronic disease.”

Mr. Baldaro will be running the London Marathon with a friend, whose wife suffers from MS. “I’ve done the Marathon once before, but that was fourteen years ago! So far I’ve raised £1200

of my £2000 target. The MS Trust provides advice and information to those living with the condition, and funding specialist healthcare and research.”

Money was also raised by a Valentine’s gift scheme, which gave students the chance to buy a red rose for their “Valentine”, a cake sale and a £1 contribution from everyone attending in non-uniform.

John and Teresa completed the marathon in just under five hours, and raised £1066 (plus about £150 from the roses) to be split between both charities. They’d like to thank everyone who supported them, as well as Gymkit UK (Station Rd, Whittlesey) for kindly providing the treadmills.

Inheritance Tax - RNRB - do you need to rewrite your will?

During the 2015 General Election campaign the Conservative Party committed to “bring the family home out of inheritance tax for all but the richest”. A simple pledge, but a complex outcome.

The current inheritance tax rules are relatively straightforward. Each person has an allowance of £325,000 (the “Nil Rate Band”). If your estate is valued under this amount there is no inheritance tax to pay. If it is greater – any value over £325,000 is taxed at 40%.

The Nil Rate Band is also transferrable between spouses/ civil partners. As such, if one spouse dies and leaves their whole estate to the other, the surviving spouse’s estate will benefit from both Nil Rate Bands on their death.

It was thought that the Government would simply raise the current Nil Rate Band to fulfil their election promise.

Instead, they introduced the Residence Nil Rate Band (“RNRB”), which will come into effect on April 6th, 2017.

The RNRB will supplement the current Nil Rate Band, which will remain in place, and it could mean that from this April an estate benefits from an additional £100,000 inheritance tax allowance. This figure is due to increase by £25,000 every year until 2020, where it will reach its intended limit of £175,000.

However, in order to benefit from the RNRB certain conditions have to be met: Firstly, you will have to own your own property. Further, you must have lived in that property as your main home at some point before your death. As such, if you don’t own your own home you will not benefit from the RNRB.

Thirdly, there are limitations surrounding estates exceeding £2 million. If this is the case, the RNRB will be reduced by £1 for every £2 over that £2 million.

The RNRB will be transferable between spouses/civil partners, in the same way that the current Nil Rate Band is.

Therefore, if a husband and wife leave everything to each other on the first of their deaths, before leaving their estate to their children on the second of their deaths, they could benefit from two Nil Rate Bands and two RNRBs. This could mean a combined inheritance tax allowance of £1 million after April 2020.

However, you will see that the RNRB limited towards benefitting spouses/civil partners who have their own children, and own their own homes.

There are certain pitfalls to be wary of, even if you could potentially benefit from the RNRB. For example, if you are an unmarried couple and you leave your estate to your partner first and foremost, your estate would not benefit from the RNRB. Further, a wide range of trusts would prevent an estate benefitting from the RNRB. Given the complexity of the RNRB it is essential for you to review your Will, and get the relevant advice regarding your estate, to ensure you benefit from the new relief, if possible.

Secondly, the property must be inherited by a direct descendant (e.g. children, grandchildren, stepchildren, etc.).

As such, if you have no children of your own, or if you don’t want your children to inherit your property, your estate would not be able to use the RNRB.

Local History

The Great War in Whittlesey - by Connor Martin Part 4: Harry and Charles Popely

It is almost a tradition with these articles to showcase how the war affected families, with the last two issues presenting the stories of two sets of local brothers. This month's article is no different, for the war continued and claimed the lives of more Whittlesey residents in 1917. This month, the focus is on Charles and Harry Popely of 10 Briggate West, Whittlesey. Son of Henry and Eliza Popely, Harry Popely was born in 1877, and his brother in 1895.

Both sons signed up as the war broke out - as many in Whittlesey did - and were split into their two regiments. Harry was sent to fight with the 8th East Kent Regiment, which had already seen action on the Western Front and as far afield as Palestine. It is believed that the 8th Regiment was stationed in France when Harry was joined, but the exact location is uncertain. His brother Charles William Popely, on the other hand, was enrolled in the 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment, and was stationed at Givenchy (the location of the historic 1914 battle), which saw no major offensive action.

Charles was honourably discharged from the army on the 14th of July 1916. The reasons for this are unknown, but after his discharge he was sent back to his hometown of Whittlesey, where he lived for only another year before dying on the 25th of June 1917. He was buried in Whittlesey Cemetery.

Harry was never discharged, and had to bear the brunt of the harsh conditions of the trenches. Trenches had improved considerably by 1917, developing from the lice and rat loaded dugouts to a more civilised and efficient system. This is not to say they were pleasant – far from it – but they were much more advanced than those first dug in 1914. For instance, soldiers in 1914 faced an incredibly high chance of being shot whilst going to the toilet, but by 1917 the British Army had learned its lesson, and made sure unnecessary casualties were avoided.

Harry had survived the Battle of the Somme, and was stationed in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, the location of the famous battle for Vimy Ridge.

Harry was present at the battle, and took part from the 9th of April 1917 until the last day, the 12th. Tragically for Harry, just as the German troops were about to retreat, he was fatally shot and died within twenty minutes. Avoiding being shot in this final stage of the battle was extremely difficult because, as the Germans were retreating, a line of gunfire was ordered

to make the retreat easier; this is what would have fatally wounded Harry Popely.

Another month of the war has passed, and what have we learnt? We have learnt that the war cannot be thought of simply as a global conflict, but as a conflict that tore families apart - a message I hope I have conveyed in these past few articles, in which we have seen its direct personal impact on the people of Whittlesey. But Whittlesey was not alone, and when we project these local losses on to a global scale, taking into account the countless other countries, towns and families who faced similar heartbreak, it is horrifying to comprehend just how much devastation the Great War caused.

Local History

Turves Chapel - by Jen Barback In 1865, friends at Providence Chapel, March, began to hold services in a farmhouse in Turves, and the Baptist Chapel was built in 1866 by public subscription. It was also known as “Whittlesey Road Chapel”.

The land for the chapel was bought from local farmer Mr. William Barrett. The trustees included fifteen local men and three pastors from Whittlesey, March and Swavesey.

Early in the century, preachers walked the 5½ miles in from March, while others travelled by horse and trap, or later, using a bicycle. The district had no water, and no electricity until 1955, and so the chapel was originally heated by a round “tortoise” stove and had oil lamps. There were earth closet toilets, and any water for meetings and cleaning was boiled in the family copper.

In 1936 Mr. James Barrett gave a small piece of land, and an unplumbed kitchen and vestry were added at the back.

Sundays at the chapel were busy, with Sunday school at 10am, a service between 11 and 12.30, Sunday school again at 3pm, and an evening service between 6.30 and 8pm.

A communion service was always held once a month.

up for cutting up of bread with home-made butter. There was always a vase of roses and pinks on each table, which had a lovely smell, and the tea was famous (as extra tea was used and the water was soft). Visitors came from other places around for these special occasions. The day after the anniversary was always the Sunday school treat: following tea in the chapel, the Sunday school scholars would march to a field lent by Mr. Frank Johnson, with the two strongest boys carrying flags at the head of the procession. Games were played and the children were given sweets, nuts and even ice cream. The Harvest Thanksgiving Prayer meeting was another time of real importance, and was held at full moon to help people see their way home.

The congregation stood at between twenty five and forty for many years, but gradually the numbers dwindled to just one or two families, and finally only the Barrett family were left. By the 1950s there was only one remaining trustee, and it was mutually

decided that the deeds should be made over to the Cambs & East Midlands Union of Strict Baptist Churches. At that time the chapel was regularly attended, with thirty to forty children on the Sunday school register.

However, the building was demolished in 1980, having been empty for four years and increasingly vandalised. The bricks were sold for £100 and the land sold by auction for £450 by Messers. Grounds of March.

Pets’ Corner Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Elderly Pets There are few things in life, particularly these days, that are a certainty, but one thing that is always certain is that we and our pets get older.

As you may know from your own bodies, “things” start to slow down, more sleep is perhaps needed, and there is a longer recovery period from exercise.

All of this is true of our pets, and because in general they have a shorter life expectancy than us, the symptoms appear a lot quicker than we would like.

Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing we can do to stem the sands of time, but there are things that vets can do to keep common issues – such as incontinence, deafness, loss of sight and loss of mental function - at bay, and lessen their effects when they do creep up.

Probably the single most important thing you can do to help your pet enjoy a suitably long life, is to feed them properly with a good quality food, and to keep an eye on their weight. The weight, or frequently the excess weight that a pet is carrying, may cause joint problems, diabetes, heart problems, and impaired liver and kidney function, to name but a few. It is therefore really important to remember that they are dogs and cats, not small people, and so providing a good quality diet is an excellent start.

Another issue that is often related to food is dental problems. As with humans, dental issues can be very painful for pets, leading to halitosis, bleeding gums, loss of appetite, tooth rot and abscesses.

This can be minimised by feeding a biscuit based diet, physically cleaning their teeth, and by adding a powder to their food that systemically removes small amounts of plaque.

Large dogs such as Labradors, Rottweilers, Dobermans and the like tend to suffer from arthritis as they reach their later years. Of course, if they have suffered from a trauma, or suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, then they may suffer earlier.

There are various medications that your vet can prescribe that may ease the symptoms, but they cannot be reversed.

Debate Comes to New Road PRIMARY School!

British Parliamentary debate has come to Whittlesey! New Road Primary School were the proud hosts of the first ever inter-schools debating tournament for Cambridgeshire primary school pupils. The tournament organiser, Mrs Baxter, a teacher at the school, decided that it was time that primary school children had a chance to take part in organised debate.

“I realised that there is nothing currently available in the UK for primary school children – although there are quite a few debating societies and tournaments for older children and adults,” Mrs Baxter said.

“Speaking and listening is an important skill for all ages, and it is especially important to start building that skill early. Debating helps the children to develop broader vocabulary and communicate effectively.”

To date, nine schools have taken part from an initial sixteen; some schools had to withdraw due to time constraints and other factors. The semi-final was held on Monday February 6th and proved to be an exciting and lively debate, as children from Fulbridge, Farcet, William de Yaxley and Fourfields discussed whether cyclists should have a licence. The final, which will be judged by Stephen Barclay MP (ably assisted by students from Sir Harry Smith Community College, who were judges in the previous heats), will be held on March 10th at the Fenland Council Chambers in March, and the point for discussion will be “the school day should be longer”.

The Stars Come Out at Park Lane!

Year One children at Park Lane Primary & Nursery school, together with our Year One friends from New Road Primary School, were recently wowed by being immersed in the centre of the universe!

A massive planetarium visited the school, filling the main hall. Children entered the Star Dome and were amazed to see the Sun move across the sky, and day turn into night. Of course, with night came a stunning display of stars, moons and planets!

Ben Chisholm, Year One teacher, said, "The planetarium visit was a huge success. Every child was immersed in the interactive galaxy.

It was wonderful to see the awe, wonder and enjoyment on all the children's faces!"

The visit concluded with a fantastic 360 degree show, teaching the children all about the Sun, planets and our solar system. All the children had an out-of-this-world experience!

Remembering the Holocaust - Written by Phoebe Townsend and Edey Garton During December and January, The Small Nose Drama Company gave thirty of our Year 6 pupils at Alderman Jacobs School an amazing opportunity to act, perform and learn more about the Holocaust experience. Mark Curtis (drama instructor at the Small Nose Company) helped us to fulfil our acting abilities over the five sessions we spent with him.

After meeting with us for the first time, Mark taught us all about the Kindertransport, and the life of a special Jewish woman named Liane. He decided to let us create our own script, using all of our combined ideas to portray the prejudice she experienced and her amazing escape. This proved successful, as we all enjoyed this and felt that we had really played a crucial part in producing the play. We then perfected our creation and finally

performed it at Peterborough Regional College on 27th January. Miss Vickers (Assistant Head Teacher of Upper School and our class teacher) was amazed at how well we all portrayed Liane’s story, with not just words, but stage presence too.

Not only did the production please our teachers and friends, but it also impressed Liane herself, who came to watch our performance along with the Mayor of Peterborough and our parents. We were all delighted to meet Liane and were pleased to learn her story and her truths about the Holocaust.

Early Years

Alphabet Day Nursery This month has been very exciting for the children in the pre-school room at Alphabet Day Nursery.

We have now introduced Montessori learning to the children, and have lots of new equipment and a new area in the pre-school room to carry out this teaching. The children are having a great time exploring this area and the new equipment.

We have had a lovely time celebrating Chinese New Year. We turned our role play area into a Chinese restaurant, and the children had a lovely time playing with the chop sticks and woks, and pretending to order food. We made Chinese lanterns using red paper, paint and glitter, and we have explored egg noodles, dry and wet. The children had lots of fun trying to pick the noodles up using the chopsticks and spoons, and putting them in bowls.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Alexandra moved to Whittlesey from London when she was seventeen, and about a year and a half ago entered her first beauty pageant for plus-size women. Despite initial nerves, her confidence soon grew and she was incredibly proud to make it to the final stage of the competition.

Now 27, Alexandra is entering her second competition – the Miss British Beauty Curve Pageant – which takes place in Kent on August 5th. Following her success last time, she is optimistic about her chances and hopes to inspire others who have experienced negative comments about their looks.

“I’m a size 22/24, and as someone who is plus-size, I’ve dealt with my fair share of bullying. Yes, there are stretchmarks and dark patches on my skin, but people should love me for who I am, not how I look. After all, no one in this world is perfect.”

What is your fondest memory of your childhood?

My first visit to the Science Museum in London, aged eight. I was fascinated by all the experiments you could take part in.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

I have a few good influences in my life. The first is my older sister, who opened my eyes to the plus-size community, and all the good things that have come out of it. Secondly, my mum, who has always believed in me, and who is always there for me, day and night, through thick and thin.

Which two characters, alive or dead, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

Tess Holliday: As one of the best-known plus-size models, she is an inspiration to me. She gives faith that if you work hard enough, one day you could be a success too.

Maya Angelou: A spokeswoman for women and black people, who went on to become a wellknown writer and poet. One of my favourite quotes from her is, “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be!”

How would you describe yourself in just five words?

Honest, hardworking, easy-going, motivated and fun.

What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey?

I enjoy Whittlesey because of its sense of community. I love it when the town all comes together for Straw Bear and other events throughout the year. I am also proud of the way in which Whittlesey people pull together when members of the community are in need of help or understanding.

And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why?

That would have to be our buses!

Living in Coates, a more regular timetable would be handy, not to mention if they actually turned up on time for once!

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

Don’t rush to grow up. Believe in yourself, pursue your dreams and never give up. You’re going to make mistakes in your life, but you’ll learn from them… and sometimes your mum is actually right!

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I would like to think that in the future I would be happy, confident, enjoying life, and continuing to inspire others as a plus-size model.

Spotlight On...

OOBAC Archers

T

he British have a long and cherished history with archery. However, it was only after the Norman invasion in 1066, when Duke William (William the Conqueror) had defeated English King Harold at Hastings, that the longbow was developed into a weapon of war, and archery became widely practised. Kings went to great pains to ensure that enough men had the proper archery skills. At different times, they officially banned games such as football, bowls and, in Scotland, golf, because men everywhere were playing those sports rather than practising archery in their spare time.

The gradual introduction of firearms from the 15th century cut down the need for all that practice, but it did not quell a national following for archery as a recreation. As early as the 16th century, societies dedicated to the bow and arrow sprang up to satisfy the demand for competition, with modern target archery beginning in the 18th century. (www.archerygb.org)

Although not dating back to 18th century, OOBAC Archers has a growing history within the Peterborough area. Founded in 1999, OOBAC Archers is a fun, inclusive, family-friendly archery club, based in the Whittlesey area. We actively encourage all classes of archery within the club, and you will encounter traditional English longbows, horse bows, flat bows, recurve bows, compound bows and crossbows at our two shooting venues.

During the winter season (October – March), OOBAC Archers shoot every Friday night (6.45pm9.00pm) at the Eastrea Centre, whilst our outdoor

200 yard+ shooting range, located adjacent to New Road School, is open to members all year round, 24/7 - although not many of our archers brave the outdoor range during the winter period!

We are always looking to welcome new members, whether an established archer or total beginner.

We run free taster sessions on the first Sunday of the month at our outdoor range, where you will be provided with a bow and shown the basics of shooting. Following this, we hold regular beginner courses run by our own Archery GB qualified coaches.

For businesses and organisations, OOBAC Archers offers corporate and fun days. We own an array of equipment and can cater for moderately sized parties.

The Local Music Scene

Back to School?

Following on from last month’s look at buying a first guitar, we think about how to progress from absolute beginner to producing a tune or accompaniment.

Whilst most bedroom guitarists are quickly able to play a few chords and strum along to their favourite song by ear, there are those who want to play all the different styles and genres of music, and even write their own compositions.

There are endless videos on YouTube that show how to play almost every cover song ever performed, with step by step phrase copying.

However, the basics of music theory, and the ability to compose all the parts of a self-penned piece and commit to either notation or tab, is often overlooked.

Last month, I mentioned the original “play in a day” guide by Bert Weedon. Since its first publication, there have been numerous similar publications by other performers and music teachers. This route is fine for the majority of players, but for a greater understanding of song structure and the musical or lyrical hook, along with performance craft, a few sessions with an experienced musician/teacher cannot be disregarded.

Whether you have aspirations to play on a stage or play purely for your own enjoyment, the understanding of why a song structure or melody has the ability to remain in your head - like a

catchy advert tune or repeating lyric - will enhance your own ability to compose.
