Welcome to your December issue...

D

ecember is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year.

We can think about what we’ve achieved in 2023; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! As the big day edges nearer, let’s hope that the Christmas lights in your area will bring much-needed cheer in what have sadly been, for many people elsewhere in the world, such traumatic times of late. Let us all hope that peace and reconciliation aren’t too far away in both Ukraine and the Middle East. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2024 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

There is one strange sensation about getting older... life seems to speed up. This year has been no exception as it doesn’t seem twelve months since I wrote this column as we approached Christmas 2022. It has been another busy year for everyone at Discovering Magazines and I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people for their efforts throughout the year. Firstly, to my colleagues on the magazine who, believe me, always work tirelessly to bring you the best possible publication each month. Secondly, to the regular contributors who never fail to supply entertaining articles that I hope you all enjoy reading. Next, our advertisers whose support enables us to bring you a free magazine each month. And finally, to you, our readers. If it wasn’t for you there would be no Discovering March. So, on behalf of all the team on the magazine I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas. See you in 2024...

Andy

STATION TEA PARTY MARKS TEN-YEAR MILESTONE An organisation which champions the railway line running through the Fens has marked the culmination of its ten-year anniversary celebration. The Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP), which helps to promote and develop the Hereward Line and its five stations at Peterborough, Whittlesea, March, Manea and Ely, held an afternoon tea party at March Railway Station. The event was an opportunity to look back on a decade of success delivering the Community Rail Development Strategy locally, helping communities to see how their local stations and railway can connect them to people, places and opportunities to flourish.

SAM SCORES A FAMOUS RACE WIN Former March Town Cricket Club player Sam Freedman and his father Anthony have won one of the World’s greatest horse races... the Melbourne Cup. Sam, who was the club’s overseas player in 2016, and his father trained their horse Without a Fight to victory in the £4.5 million race which is run at Flemington Park and is dubbed the ‘Race that stops a nation’. During his stay in England, Sam helped March win the Whitings League Division 2 and also worked with Roger Varian, a Newmarket racehorse trainer.

As well as an afternoon tea with cakes and sandwiches, the celebratory event included the inaugural showing of the Hereward CRP’s latest video – ‘Travel along the Hereward Line – Enjoy a Journey of Discovery’, which can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWnqRNklGIY Guests also received a ten-year anniversary memento booklet, featuring a decade of CRP highlights, and were given a tour of March Station’s refurbished ticket office and waiting room, and the Friends of March Railway Station’s Community Rooms and model railway. PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

CHEAP DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN CHEERFUL....

W

ith Christmas just around the corner, the usual Black Friday and preChristmas sales are in full swing and a recently polished version of Windows 11 is now available. Don’t be fooled by cheap prices – cheap really doesn’t always mean cheerful. Have a read through the following buying guide to help you choose the right desktop or laptop PC and to hopefully avoid disappointment. Windows 10 or 11? This year I’d be making sure that I get one with Windows 11. With all of the patches and refinements Microsoft have done in the last year it’s really good now. Processor – CPU As the ‘brains’ of your computer, the processor does influence performance, although the choice will depend on what you need to do. If you’re looking for a standard PC with the best combination of price and performance, buy a Core i3 or Ryzen 3. Intel Core i5 or i7 CPUs

and Ryzen 5 or 7 will be better for multitasking, multimedia tasks, high-end gaming, but are more expensive. Storage – Hard Drive This is where all your data is stored. Most people struggle to fill a 250GB Hard Drive with photos, programs and music since the average size of a photo or MP3s is about 4MB (you can store about 62,500 photos or MP3’s on a small 250GB Hard Drive). However, if you play around with video files 250GB will be hugely insufficient and you should look to one thousand GB (1TB) drives which can store about twenty-four hours of HD video. Warning: be very wary of buying a computer with LESS than 120Gb of storage space. Windows 10 and 11 have regular sizeable updates that you will have difficulty installing. In fact, Windows 11 insists on a minimum 64Gb of storage. We advise getting a PC with at least a 120GB Solid State Disk (SSD) – see our previous articles about SSDs.

Memory – RAM RAM is fast, temporary storage that Windows uses to load both itself and whatever it is you are doing at the time. If you are surfing the internet, you are using some RAM for Windows, a little more for the web browser, a little more for your anti-virus program, etc. 4GB is the bare minimum amount of RAM you should have in a PC, 8GB is ideal. New or Refurbished? We here at Diamond Byte sell both. Personally, I’m the kind of person who likes a bargain and would rather buy a faster older PC that was refurbished than a new one, but I also understand the want for something new and sparkly. Just make sure you buy your refurbished ones from someone that gives them a twelve-month guarantee and has installed a fresh copy of Windows and ALL the drivers.

Buying online has never been easier and one of the most popular sites is Facebook Marketplace. But, sadly, the more popular the methods of buying and selling, the more appealing to the scammers. With the Christmas shopping season here, many of us are looking for a bargain – but how do you know if your seller is genuine? Here are some tips: • Don’t feel pressured into a quick sale. Look for local items so you can check them – and meet the seller – before you pay. • Fraudsters may want to pay by bank transfer. Never pay by bank transfer. Pay by debit or credit card to protect your money. • Even though a seller may be recommended, having good reviews and followers doesn’t make them genuine. Meet them in person and a genuine seller will let you pay in a way that protects your money. • Fraudsters are very careful to take the time and effort to set up a fake sale – even for low value items. They may try and tempt buyers with items that are sold out or rare. It is better to pay a little more to a genuine seller than to lose your money. • If you are thinking about buying from a website or company you are unfamiliar with, visit a review site like Trustpilot and look at the experiences of other consumers. Reporting scams on Facebook Marketplace 1 Report the listing. Find the specific Marketplace listing you want to report and follow the onscreen instructions. 2 Report the user. Go to the Facebook profile of the user you want to report. Click on the “…” or ‘More Options’ link, usually under their cover photo. Select “Find support or report” and follow the instructions. 3 Record all conversations. Before reporting a user or scam, make sure to save or screenshot any suspicious conversations or transactions. 4 Contact the police, especially if you’ve lost money or an item with substantial value. 5 Submit feedback to Facebook. If you experience a scam or see a potential loophole that might be exploited by fraudsters, it’s a good idea to provide feedback. Check out Facebook’s official guidelines for staying safe while using Facebook Marketplace (https://www.facebook.com/help/ 1156544111079919), so you can avoid scams. Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas. DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 3

DON’T MISS SANTA!

GOLDEN AGE CELEBRATES TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY Councillors and other key people involved in organising Golden Age events, which offer advice and support to the over-sixties, marked twenty years to the month since the events launched. The Golden Age events have proven a popular part of the Fenland calendar and continue to go strong, with the next one planned at March Braza Club this month. In November, twenty years on from the first Golden Age event in November 2003, people involved in running, building and maintaining the Fenland District Council events came to the council offices at Fenland Hall, March, for tea and cake. The Golden Age events were founded by the late Cllr Mac Cotterell MBE and are now branded Mac’s Golden Age in his memory. His widow Marjorie (Madge) said: “I’m so proud of the legacy Mac has left behind and the remarkable Golden Age events that have helped so many people over the years. He was a selfless man who was dedicated to the community, and he had so much respect and admiration for the Golden Age team.” The Golden Age events continue to be a regular fixture in the Fenland diary. Designed for older people and their family, carers and friends, they are held in villages and towns around the district. Numerous organisations have stands at the events, providing details of all the services and support they offer to older people. Information and advice can range from details of social activities to financial support, volunteering information to transport provision. Free tea, coffee and cake and other free gifts are available on the day. The next Golden Age event is on Monday, December 4th, 10am-1pm, at March Braza Club, Elm Road, March, Cambridgeshire PE15 8NZ. Everyone is welcome. Just turn up. As the winter season sets in, it’s crucial to pay extra attention to your furry friend’s joint health. Dogs, like humans, can experience discomfort and stiffness in their joints due to the colder, damper weather. Here are some tips to help care for your dog’s joints during the winter and the benefits of animal physiotherapy in maintaining their health. Firstly, maintain your dog’s exercise routine. Although the weather might be cold, regular, moderate exercise is crucial for joint health. Take shorter but more frequent walks to prevent stiffness. Indoor activities, such as sniffing and searching for kibble or creating obstacle courses, can help keep your dog active. Provide them with a cozy bed to rest on, particularly after outdoor activities. Ensure they are wrapped up warm when out on a walk, to help protect their joints. A warm environment helps in preventing joint stiffness and discomfort. Consider providing joint supplements or adjusting their diet to include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting joint health.

D E C EM B ER 2023

Regular vet check-ups are essential, especially during winter. A veterinarian can advise on specific joint care for your dog, prescribe supplements, and detect any joint issues early on. Consider animal physiotherapy as an integral part of joint care for your dog. Carried out by professionals, physiotherapy helps in relieving joint pain, improving mobility, and preventing further issues. Massage, hydrotherapy, and exercises designed for your dog's specific needs can significantly enhance joint health and overall well-being. Personalised plans aid in improving joint flexibility, muscle strength, and contributing to your dog’s comfort and happiness, particularly in the colder months. In conclusion, maintaining an active routine, providing proper nutrition, regular vet checkups, and considering the benefits of animal physiotherapy, you can significantly contribute to your furry friend's joint health and overall well-being during the colder months.

WHAT HAPPENS TO SOMEONE’S HOME WHEN THEY DIE?

hat happens to someone’s home when they die depends on a number of factors, including whether they were the sole owner or if it’s owned with someone else, if there’s a mortgage or had equity released from the property, or whether the property is held in trust. The first thing to establish is who is going to be responsible for dealing with the property. If there is a will, the executor should be named in it and they will be the person who has to deal with the property, as set out in the will. When there isn’t a will, there is a strict list of the people who should deal with the estate and this should be checked to make sure the right person is acting as the personal representative (PR). If there is a surviving joint-owner, they will need to inform the Land Registry of the death of the co-owner, so that the title to the property can be updated. The first step the executor or PR should take is to ensure that the property is secure (which may include gathering in the keys to the property from anyone who had a set) and they should remove any valuables or important documents for safekeeping, if the property is unoccupied. It is important to check there is building insurance cover over the property – if there was a fire or damage caused to the property, the beneficiaries could hold the executor personally responsible for the loss of the gift that they should have received, if there is no insurance in place. The executors will need to apply for a Grant of Probate in order to deal with the next steps

of selling the property or transferring it to the beneficiaries. If the property is to be sold, it can remain in the name of the deceased and the executor will sign all of the legal documents in relation to the sale. It is always best to ask at least three estate agents to provide a valuation for the property and to give quotes for their fees. Both the valuations and the quotes can vary greatly. It might be that, as executor, you want to discuss the marketing of the property with the beneficiaries, but the final decision will rest with the executor. In addition to the legalities, there are some other practical steps the executors/PRs should take if the property is empty. For example, contacting the utility companies to advise them of the death – if the deceased was paying their bills by direct debit, those payments will stop once the bank account is frozen, so bills should be redirected to the executors so that they can be dealt with correctly. The local council should be contacted if the property is empty ,as there may be a grace period for Council Tax and there might even be some money due back to the estate. It is important to find a lawyer who is familiar with both the practicalities of selling an estate property, but also the emotional effects that selling a family home may bring. At Vine Law we pride ourselves on offering a compassionate and understanding ear during what can be a difficult time. If you are acting as an executor or PR and would like to talk to us about dealing with a property you can give us a call on (01945) 898090, or email Cath Collins on cathcollins@vinelaw.co.uk or Kieren Cross on kierencross@vinelaw.co.uk

THERE’S SO MUCH TO SEE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

I

By Steve Barclay MP

t seems incredible that December is here already and we’re in the countdown to Christmas. The autumn term seems to fly by. Once the clocks have gone back, time seems to speed up towards the end of the year.

It’s peak festive preparation season and we had Wisbech and March Christmas lights switch on at the end of November, with Chatteris on December 2nd. Don’t miss March Christmas Market on December 3rd and Wisbech Christmas Fayre on December 10th to pick up some presents and get in the festive spirit.

There are many successful and enjoyable events that take place around the constituency each year which take a huge amount of planning and hard work for the benefit of the thousands of people who attend. Fenland District Council is looking at next year’s events in Chatteris, March, Whittlesey and Wisbech and inviting volunteers, traders, sponsors and organisations to get involved. Events include the March St George’s Festival (April 21st); Chatteris Midsummer Festival (June 22nd & 23rd); Whittlesey Festival (September 8th) as well as the regular markets in Chatteris on Fridays, March on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and Whittlesey on Fridays, plus Wisbech daily. These events are a valuable part of our towns and communities and I’d urge you to get involved. For more information go to www.fenland. gov.uk/events , www.fenland.gov.uk/markets or contact: marketsandevents@fenland.gov.uk November saw our annual Festival of Remembrance and it was, as always, humbling to be involved in the events both in London and around the constituency as we remembered the service and sacrifice of those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict. Artificial intelligence is increasingly in the news and it is good to see one application benefitting stroke patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn. Brainomix, the artificial intelligence medical

software, allows brain scans to be sent directly to an app system which makes it easier for doctors to interpret them and make sure patients are given the correct treatment as fast as possible. In its first two months of use, forty patients have benefitted. Meanwhile, the Government has made £1 million available to fund at least one thousand new defibrillators, and community organisations can now apply for a grant to fund a defibrillator in areas where they are most needed, such as rural areas, places with high footfall or spaces for vulnerable people, including town halls, community centres, local shops, post offices and parks. For more information go to https://www.defibgrant.co.uk/ Volunteers in the constituency continue to amaze and inspire with their dedication and selflessness. The annual Fenland District Council Celebration Evening, recognising the work of volunteers and presenting awards for the best voluntary projects, showcased the fabulous work done by many in the community, and I want to add my heartfelt thank you to them all for their efforts. Winners included Friends of Wisbech General Cemetery, Doddington Street Pride, Wisbech Street Pride, Wisbech in Bloom, Whittlesey Street Pride, Wisbech St Mary Street Pride and Wisbech St Mary Church of England Academy, Chatteris in Bloom/Street Pride, Friends of Station Road Cemetery in March, Friends of Octagon Graveyard in Wisbech, Friends of March Railway Station, and Manea Street Pride. I popped into Askham House to wish Gladys Kightly a very happy 107th birthday. She was born just outside Chatteris and married her husband Stanley at Doddington Church and had two children, Sue and Janet. It was a real pleasure to visit, chat to her daughter Sue, and to meet the fantastic team at Askham House. Finally, I like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Saluting Leah and Lauren

Mother and daughter Leah and Lauren Doncaster have lost more than six stone in weight through Slimming World. Leah has lost an incredible 4st 7lbs while Lauren has shed 1st 9lbs by joining the March Slimming World group plan. The pair said: “We were beginning to think about a family holiday abroad. However, thinking about wearing a swimming costume or bikini was an absolute no for us at the time. We knew we needed to make a change of appearance but also to improve our self-confidence.

“We love being on the Slimming World plan as it allows us to still enjoy all of our favourite meals or treats whilst still losing weight as we just need to adapt the recipe to be Slimming World friendly. "Our biggest challenges since joining Slimming World have been retraining our brains to avoid or limit ourselves from our worst habits. Since joining our relationship has become a much healthier one.”

FENLAND SKIES By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group

T

he flat land of the Fens provides a perfect view of the sky and it can be magnificent. It’s not even necessary to step outdoors as the weather is just beyond the window.

Huge black clouds with the sun shining can be awesome and, as this usually means rain, looking from inside has great advantages. The most attractive skies have distinct white, cotton wool clouds that have different shapes that can be thought to look like anything, only limited by imagination. Sometimes these clouds can give us an idea of what the day will be like especially if the day starts cloudless. As the day warms cloud will begin to develop and careful observation can predict a pleasant afternoon or whether it will be cloudy and potentially wet. Pick a small wispy cloud and watch it carefully, if the sun is melting it away then the day will be fine but if it builds and thickens then the cloud will win the battle and rain is possible later in the day. Even so after afternoon rain the evening and night will be clear. High cloud in huge swirls can look lovely against a clear blue sky. They are a portent of windy weather and our huge open Fenland skies mean there is nothing to stop the wind. We are all familiar with a lazy wind when it feels as though the wind goes through you, rather than around. Oddly, even though it is beautiful, a cloudless sky can be a bit boring if you like cloudscapes. The most unattractive weather is produced by high atmospheric pressure conditions in summer. The sky is light grey, there is no sun, no rain, no wind, in effect no weather. This is a ‘grade A grey day’ and they can continue for too long especially in the summer when we hope for better. March seldom has massive thunderstorms but they can be spectacular and scary in equal measure. Storm clouds can be seen approaching as they have an anvil shape produced by the top of the cloud rising and going ahead of the lower part.

Whitemoor turbines sunset

Christam's sunset over Station Road

For an indoor weather watcher, rainbows are frustrating because they are invariably invisible from every window you try. To get a good rainbow, heavy rain is best so to see the beautiful colours; getting wet is the only option. Dawn and sunset can often be stunningly but fleetingly beautiful, as can crepuscular rays that are sunbeams shining through small gaps in clouds. Keep your eyes on the skies; they are the most variable and unpredictable thing in nature. The next Gault Wood Work Parties are on Saturday, December 2nd at 10am and Saturday, January 6th, 2024. If you'd like to support our work at the wood as a volunteer, please contact the Woodland Trust using this email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk Alternatively, you might like to support the Nature's Calendar project, which focuses on phenology, which is the study of plant and animal reaction to climate change. ELECTION DAY

Pandemonium

I

By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum

t was not until Parliament passed 'The Ballot Act – 1872' that the electorate could register their vote in secret – no doubt giving rise to the often-used phrase 'My vote is between me and the ballot box'. This confidentiality was one of the main demands of 'The Chartists'. Maybe this was one of the principal causes of the mayhem that reigned in March on the occasion of the parliamentary election of November 26th, 1868. A large temporary wooden structure was erected in the middle of the Market Place. Voters had to queue along the railings by the old Corn Exchange before moving forward to enter this building. Here they would give their name to a clerk and say who they wished to vote for. This system was open to widespread bribery and corruption. For a considerable time before the election, feelings had begun to run high. At least three election meetings on the Market Place had been interrupted by a small party of hooligans. A tradesman carrying on business next to The Golden Lion was a boxer of no mean repute. Aided by a few Cambridge University under graduates, he had given the hooligans the surprise of their lives.

The climax came when one hooligan had the idea that the wagon in the river should be added to the conflagration. By superhuman effort, the cart was dragged from the river and wheeled into the middle of the fire. A later review of this incident published in the Cambridgeshire Times in 1931 claimed that pandemonium reigned until a very late hour and that the police were helpless. The electorate were voting for three representatives for the County of Cambridgeshire constituency. The successful candidates were Lord John George Manners (1820-1874) – Conservative, who was an MP for more than twenty years, Viscount Royston (1836-1897) – Conservative, and Rt. Hon. Henry Brand (1814-1892) – Liberal, who was The Speaker of the House of Commons (18721884) and subsequently elevated to the Lords as Lord Hampden. The unsuccessful candidate was Mr Richard Young – Liberal. Photo: View of the north side of the Market Square, the old clock is now in St Peter’s Church tower

However, excitement became acute at about 1 o'clock on Election Day. Some of the mob seized a large, two horse wagon – referred to as a 'brake'. They deliberately wheeled it into the river behind the fire engine building – where the Town Hall now stands. Polling finished at 5pm. A fire had already been lit and within minutes the wooden polling station had been torn down and consigned to the flames. Small wooden handcarts followed and wooden fences from far and wide were brought in to add fuel to the fire.
