Welcome to your December issue... A

very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2021.

As a new year draws closer, it’s time to look back and reflect on what has been another particularly challenging year for many. Mass vaccinations against COVID-19 have certainly slowed down the pandemic’s deadly progress, and we have managed to return to a form of normality. Next year may even see some of us searching for our passports and getting stir-crazy in airport queues again! Huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice, and suggestions. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2022 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

Claire x

A traditional Christmas looks like it’s back on the agenda this year after the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic hampered last year’s celebrations. Families and friends will hopefully be able to join together for the festive season following the success of the national vaccine roll-out. Last year’s festivities were naturally subdued, with a lack of pre-Christmas get-togethers because of the local lockdown, however this year it seems likely that things will be more like they were pre-pandemic. I hope this seasonal issue helps put you in the mood for the holiday period as we bring you all the latest news and offerings from the local community. We always strive to give you the best possible publication each month, but to do so we need your help, so please continue to keep us informed of your activities in the New Year. So, on behalf of all the team at the magazine, enjoy your Christmas and New Year celebrations, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you again in 2022…

Your Garden

December Gardening Tips

W

e are approaching the shortest day and moving towards the months that bring the worst weather for the gardener.

Weather predictions for this winter are influenced by La Nina and show that we may be in for a cold December, with persistent snow. Time to sit back with a warm toddy and plan next year’s crops and reflect on what went well this year. Now is also a good time to clean tools, seed trays, pots, and other equipment as it will help prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean. Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material. You can harvest lots of vegetables for Christmas plates, including parsnips, leeks, and winter cabbages, all of which can be left in the ground until you need them. It is difficult to harvest crops from frozen soil, so if temperatures plummet, cover the soil with straw. Harvest Brussels sprouts when they are around one inch in diameter, before they ‘blow open.’ Pick them from the base of the plant up, twisting them away from

4

the plant. If you have grown potatoes for Christmas, they should be ready now. Hopefully, you will have plenty of crops to store through the winter and it is important that they are stored correctly. Cabbages can be hung in net bags; potatoes in thick paper sacks; carrots and parsnips between slightly moist layers of sand (making sure they are not touching) and, provided pumpkins and squashes have been properly cured, they should keep well if ventilated well and laid on straw or shredded paper. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • You can still plant garlic if the soil is not frozen. • Onion seeds can be sown in trays or pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. • Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould. • Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for, and repair, any holes. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year!

STAY SAFE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON By Steve Barclay MP

A

s we head into the festive season and start making plans to spend Christmas with families and loved ones, I very much hope that this year will be a celebration.

For many, the last twenty-or-so months has been a long, hard road and the national lockdown surrounding last Christmas was fraught with difficulties as families had to forego their usual festive reunion in order to keep safe in the midst of the worst pandemic in living memory. With some time still to go before Christmas and the very real presence of coronavirus still active in our communities, I hesitate to say that this year we’ll be back to normal. But I believe we’ve come a long way in our battle with this virus and our phenomenally successful vaccination programme puts us in a very different place to last year. However, I would urge everyone to do what you can to keep yourselves and your families safe – from booster jabs to continued handwashing, we can all take action to make this festive season as safe as possible. Getting out and about in the community over the last month, it has been great to see some of the results of the hard work that has continued quietly during the pandemic. It was a real pleasure to open the new look March Community Centre, which is a fantastic resource and will provide much valued support and new skills for local people in a fun, modernised, bright and fast internet-connected building conveniently located a short walk from the centre of town.

looking into the strengths of the area and what we can build upon to attract investment. Together with Fenland District Council, I’m working with leading national marketing firm, “thinking place”, in an exercise designed to help support plans to develop a Levelling Up Fund bid. “thinking place” has helped areas like Lowestoft and Hull transform their success rate in securing government investment. We are competing with other towns across the UK for investment and while there is much locally to be proud of and we’ve already made progress in securing investment in a number of areas, we can do more – and working together with clarity on how we want to communicate the potential of our area is key. Finally, I wanted to reassure you regarding my continued campaigning against the enormous incinerator proposals for Wisbech. I have written to the chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate to highlight the lack of response by developer MVV to the expert report I had commissioned on behalf of local residents in response to the consultation. The report identifies inaccuracies and misleading information that was presented in the consultation, with a lack of detail in multiple areas, including the adverse effects of the scheme. This incinerator will have an unimaginable impact on our area and the local community deserves a response. Photo: Steve Barclay, MP: opening March Community Centre

I’ve also been lucky enough to visit businesses and places across the country as part of my role in government, including at COP26 in Glasgow and the site of the new government hub in Peterborough. I hope you had the time and opportunity to feed into the focus groups and public workshops

Vine Lawʼs First Year And Beyond! ine Law has just celebrated its first birthday and what a busy year it’s been!

The firm ‘virtually’ opened its doors in November 2020, founded by Melinda Smith, Kim Cross and Cath Collins. In May we were joined by a new partner, Kieren Cross, to help with wills, LPAs, estate planning and probate applications, and also by Laura Ball, who assists clients with their residential and commercial property work. Opening a new firm in the middle of a pandemic presented its challenges. We already knew that we wanted to ‘do law differently’; the restrictions placed upon the country as a whole, as well as the changing mindset and needs of people, made us think more creatively about how to best help our clients. The way we have approached this so far has been well received, but we are always looking at ways to improve and feedback of any kind is always well received to help us with that – so please feel free to give it! We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the clients who instructed us in our first year and to the local businesses and professionals who have offered their support from day one. The encouragement, support, and advice we have received has made the hard work seem easier. What's to come in our second year... We’re starting our second year by launching the Vine Law App. It will enable our clients and

• • • • •

professional contacts to be able to work with us more easily and to be kept up to date with the progress of their matters as soon as they happen, as well as easily being able to see what steps have been taken and what else needs to be done. We’ll also be launching our new HR subscription service shortly. This service will enable businesses to easily access HR advice as soon as it is needed, rather than waiting to get advice after a difficult situation turns into something more serious. We’re looking at more ways to help businesses and start-ups with all their legal needs, as well as helping private individuals with their planning and ‘future proofing’ to protect themselves and their families and, of course, helping with issues that life may throw their way. We’re looking forward to continuing to establish and grow close relationships with fellow professionals and the local community. We’re great believers in collaboration which has already benefitted our clients enormously, as well as giving us the satisfaction of being able to recommend other trusted professionals when our clients may need them. If you are a like-minded business and this is something which interests you, please give as a call – we love learning about new businesses and seeing how we can work together. If you want to learn more about Vine Law, how we work and what we do, visit our website at www.vinelaw.co.uk or call us on 01945 898090.

WEST END GIRLS AND BOYS ENJOY PARK MAKEOVER

Youngsters are making the most of new and improved play equipment following the makeover of the play area at West End Park, March. It has been extended with four new attractions added a pendulum rope swing, a ‘you and me’ adult and child swing, a jumper square and a ‘WeHopper’ rocker. The area’s rubber surface has also been replaced, and new picnic benches are being installed shortly. Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Play areas are important community assets, so it is important that we set money aside to keep them up-to-date, safe, and popular with families and children of all ages.” Cllr Jan French, deputy leader of Fenland District Council and town and district councillor for March West, said: “The play park in West End Park is incredibly well-used by residents so I’m delighted that it has been refurbished and had new equipment added. I’m sure children will spend many more happy hours here.” West End Park – and a play area at Main Road, Parson Drove – was revamped following a £60,000 investment from Fenland District Council. LETTER FROM A READER: JOCK DEAR: PRESTIDIGITATOR EXTRAORDINARY Peter Wright’s excellent series, ‘Local History’ based upon March Museum Records, recently featured, ‘Jock Dear, Prestidigitator’. That struck a chord with me as I have been a ‘Magic Nut’ since certainly 1949 at the age of seven, having made it my profession for more than fifty years now. George Dear, as depicted in the photos, was typical of those elderly gentlemen, or they were to me at the age of seventeen in 1958, who were, and still are (I am one of those now), the ‘backbone of any club', be it photography, model railways, etc. On his breast pocket is displayed the club ‘jewel’ or badge, for the Institute of Magicians. I have a similar one for the Magic Circle. Doves were a popular creature with magicians, as were budgies and white rabbits of course. I had one to produce from a ‘Top Hat’ and later vanish in a tear-apart box at the age of eighteen. In 1958 I joined as a teenager, after a performance exam, The Sussex Magic Circle at Brighton. There was I recall a performer whose catchphrase was, ‘It is all done with kindness’. That I feel exactly matches Jock’s’ performance as depicted in the photos. He obviously ‘loves and cares’ for his family of birds. Otherwise, it would not work. I personally have never come across any performer who did not have the welfare of the creatures at heart. Mr George Dear’s death is recorded in March 1968, age 81. I imagine he brought ‘joy’ to many residents. Do any of you remember him? Robert Freeman, Creek Road, March

MARCH SQUASH CLUB CELEBRATES MILESTONE March Squash Club’s 40th Anniversary Dinner has been held at March Town Cricket Club. Fifty past and present players attended the function, organised by club trustee Les Mills, and enjoyed a three-course dinner prepared by Richardson’s Catering. CHRISTMAS CONCERT’S A SEASONAL SELL-OUT March and District Amateur Operatic Society (MADAOS) will be entertaining the people of March this Christmas It is staging a concert at March Town Hall, at 7.30pm on Friday, December 17th and hopes to stage a major show next year. Barbara Pepper, MADAOS press and publicity, said: “We started rehearsals for our Christmas concert and sold tickets on our website from the beginning of October. These are now sold out, so we are practising particularly hard to ensure that our audience is treated to a truly heart-warming experience. “Our future beyond this year is still a little unclear, but, following meetings with MCC, it may be possible to perform there with a bit of creative set design to accommodate the recent changes made to the building. We still retain permission from the Rights Holders to perform “9 to 5: The Musical”, which was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID, and hope to be able – at last – to stage this sometime in 2022.”

At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.

‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill and the long-awaited chance to spend it with family and friends, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. The past months may have changed our shopping habits, as many of us now favour buying our goods online, but it has also seen the scammers becoming more sophisticated.

Protect yourself from falling victim to online shopping or auction fraud: • If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead. • Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives. • Make sure you have a strong password for your email. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by 15:38 double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in. • Be extra vigilant using Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree as these are also on the hit list for criminals. At home, seasonal security is essential: For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins, are rich pickings. Remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. • Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • Consider fitting motion detector security lighting. If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are out, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden. If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com.

The Advantages of Traineeships and Apprenticeships TO EMPLOYERS

Deborah Robinson, trainee accountant at Stephenson Smart

P

employers get a £15,000 allowance per annum to offset against the amount they have to pay.

Kickstart Scheme These six-month job placements are aimed at supporting young people who are currently on Universal Credit to develop the skills and experience they need to find permanent work. For each Kickstart job, the Government will cover the cost of twenty-five hours a week at the relevant National Minimum Wage in addition to pension and National Insurance contributions for a period of six months. Employers will also receive £1500 per placement to cover set-up costs and provide wraparound support for the young person.

At Stephenson Smart, we believe believe in nurturing talent within our organisation and have an active apprenticeship scheme. We currently have twentyfour trainees working across our six offices.

art of the Government’s Plan for Jobs to help the UK economy recover from the COVID pandemic includes support for employers to take on trainees. There are different schemes available:

Traineeships Traineeships are a skills development programme for people of all ages that includes a work experience placement and gets people ready for employment or an apprenticeship. Businesses can benefit from an employer incentive of £1000 when a work experience placement of more than seventy hours has been completed. This incentive can be claimed for up to ten learners per region and employers can decide how to use the money. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships employ people to do a real job while studying for a formal qualification. There are two ways of accessing Government funding to support an apprenticeship. Large organisations will pay a levy of 0.5 percent of the wage bill. Levy-paying

If an organisation’s wage bill is under £3 million, they don't have to pay the levy. Instead, the employer agrees a payment schedule with a registered training provider and pays 5% towards the cost of the apprenticeship training to them directly. The Government will pay the remaining 95%.

One of our newest trainees is Deborah Robinson, who is based at our March office. Deborah, who grew up in Stevenage, moved over to train in accounting after a successful career in the equestrian industry running a riding school. Deborah said: “I came to a bit of a crossroads and thought it would be good to try something else and after spending so long working outside an office with a roof over my head seemed quite appealing! I’m really enjoying it and everyone has been lovely and supportive, so I’m looking forward to learning and progressing.” If your business is struggling to recruit, offering a traineeship or apprenticeship scheme might be the answer, and could make someone’s Christmas.

FAB ULOU S LY

FESTIV E

Mulled Wine

This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!

Method Ingredients Serves 6-8 people

2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 4 tsp whole cloves 2 tsp mixed spice 8 tea bags 2 whole cinnamon sticks 150g semi-dried prunes

D E C EM B ER 2021

• Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick. • You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time. • Do not boil, or the mulled wine will lose its kick, as the alcohol evaporates! • Using a ladle, carefully pour the wine into sturdy glasses. Include a wedge or two of fruit, and a prune, in each glass.

Top Tips

• You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy. • A white wine version is also an option, if your guests are not red wine lovers.

Kloster Eberbach WINES FROM GERMANY:

W

eingut Kloster Eberbach is a multi-award-winning wine producer, located in the Rheingau district of Germany, and has global recognition for its high-quality wine productions. The monastery at Eberbach dates from 1136 and was founded by Cistercian monks who had a wine cellar (Cabinetkeller) where they kept their very best wines. Weingut Kloster Eberbach produces exceptional white and red wines and has an excellent range. Very attractively furnished, comfortable accommodations are also offered, plus regular on-site events. Riesling wines are aromatic and often grace countless dining tables, pairing with fish, seafood and white meats superbly, as well as being enjoyed on their own regularly too. Crescentia Premium Wines are produced utilising grapes from the very best vineyards. Kloster Eberbach Crescentia Steinberger Riesling Trocken (12.0% vol) and Kloster Eberbach Crescentia Rauenthaler Baiken Riesling Trocken (12.0% vol) are both extremely popular, dry white wines. The respective bouquets have the typical Riesling aroma of apples and other fruits, being displayed for the nasal pleasures. The anticipation and further enjoyments are continued, for the mouthfeel and palate. The Kloster Eberbach range of wines also has Cabinetkeller productions. Highly praised and very much appreciated for their fine qualities, this section includes Kloster Eberbach Cabinetkeller Berg Roseneck Riesling Feinherb (11.5 vol). Again, superb quality prevails, and this production is 42

regularly found on ‘top’ dining tables. Certainly, a popular selection for many. Kloster Eberbach Cabinetkeller Steinberg Riesling (13% vol) is a further choice, favoured by numerous lovers By Trevor Langle of white wines. y The bouquet can, again, be classed as elegant, with citrus fruits enticing to the following delights. Welcoming and expressive, the sensations of fruits continue throughout, with an excellent, lengthy palate. Other Kloster Eberbach Cabinetkeller productions include Berg Schlossberg Spätburgunder Trocken (13.5% vol). This splendid, very impressive dry red wine has a wealth of dark fruits, and pairs wonderfully well with red meat dishes. If visiting the Rheingau area, there are wine tours of the estate and tastings available. The Kloster Eberbach wines can also be ordered easily online. The Eberbach Monastery regularly has the most memorable weddings, with personal requirements, including banquets and receptions, being meticulously planned. Please visit the website for all details www.kloster-eberbach.de. As always... Enjoy! DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 1

People in Fenland Struggling With Debt Urged to

Seek Free Help Before Christmas

F

enland’s Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre based at Centenary and Wisbech Baptist Church is offering free debt help this winter.

Lin Stanton, the (Fenland) CAP Debt Centre Manager, said: “We know that most people want to have a nice Christmas but it’s hard to do when bills are piling up. Getting help now can take the pressure off and stop the worry and misery.

anyone worrying about how they’ll manage this Christmas.

“Christmas is supposed to be a lovely celebration, but we know that for many people in our area there’s not enough money to pay essential household bills. So, there’s nothing left to make Christmas Day special.

CAP client Joanne* said: “Like any single parent, I was doing my best. I had a job but I struggled to provide for us on the money I could earn. Looking back now I didn’t realise how much my finances impacted every aspect of my life.

“Our team is here to help with debt problems through our CAP Debt Help service and because we’re local we can also support clients practically too. “Over the years we’ve had all sorts of ways to help people make Christmas that little bit better by offering hampers, linking clients up with local food banks, arranging emergency shops, emergency fuel, support, encouragement and a friendly voice at the end of a phone.

“This year has been challenging enough with the coronavirus pandemic, so we want to encourage people to get help now so that they can have a more positive end to 2021.”

“Even though I was working hard to earn money, I was constantly having to deal with the feeling of disappointing my son. I heard about CAP and now everything has changed. This Christmas we have peace. And I realise that’s what makes my son happy.”

WILD ABOUT MARCH By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group

W

The Holly and The Ivy

e all like to have holly and ivy around our homes at Christmas. The tradition predates Christmas being used to celebrate the Roman midwinter festival of Saturnalia. Iron and Bronze Age people possibly did something similar to celebrate the passing of the shortest day and the potential return of the sun from its winter rest. The evergreen nature of both plants embodies life in the darkest days of winter. Holly has always been associated with the Crown of Thorns placed on Jesus’s head when he was on the cross and the red berries represent holy blood. Holly will grow almost anywhere and it is supposedly unlucky to cut down a holly tree. The holly behaves like most flowering plants, producing white flowers in spring and summer, and generates berries in autumn. A good crop of berries is not a portent for a cold winter, but it actually shows that it was a good spring and summer. Ivy has not always been regarded as trustworthy. Its ability to grow in complete shade and almost in the dark gave it a connection with the dark side. Ivy grows vigorously in almost any conditions and the ability to cling to the smoothest surfaces makes it a symbol of rebirth and resilience. Ivy is often 60

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

accused of killing trees that it scales but the only harm it does is to make the tree top heavy so a little more likely to blow down in a gale. Ivy, unlike most plants, produces its green flowers in autumn and winter and can attract pollinators on any sunny winter day. Berries appear from January as a rule and are ripe for the birds just when there is the least amount of food available in the countryside.

Mistletoe

It is said that mistletoe was sacred to both the Romans and Druids because of its ability to survive winter conditions while the trees it grows on have lost all their leaves. Kissing under the mistletoe is a fairly recent development from Victorian times. With COVID-19 social distancing perhaps it should carry a public health warning! Mistletoe is a fairly uncommon parasite growing mostly on apple, poplar and lime trees. It depends on the tree for all its needs but will not kill the tree, it just weakens it. Birds eat the berries but do not want the seeds; some wipe the seeds onto a tree branch. If the seed passes through the bird, it has a sticky substance around it that forces the bird to use a tree branch like toilet paper – not very romantic!

Seasonal greetings to everyone and best wishes for 2022. DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 1

Local History

Alan Sawyer’s

Century Knock By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum

A

t March Cricket Club’s annual dinner on Tuesday, February 25th, 1936, two players were awarded inscribed bats for their achievements in the previous season; one was Maurice Crouch and the other was Alan Sawyer. Sawyer’s bat had on the back ‘A. Sawyer. 104 not out. 1935 season’, was signed by the hon sec. and captain, and has recently been donated to March Museum.

At the beginning of the 1935 cricket season, Alan Sawyer was not regularly playing, neither in the first XI or the seconds. However, with the departure of William Crozier to Yorkshire, Sawyer had a chance to make his mark and began to open the batting. A Cambs Times headline for 16/8/35 illustrated his skills ‘Another fine win for March. Fovargue and Sawyer at it again!’ The following day, the match at The Avenue ground was the groundsman’s benefit game. Spalding were unable to fulfil the fixture and Ramsey were pleased to resume a long-standing arrangement against March. The wicket was reported as favourable to the batsmen. Sawyer and C. E. Johnson opened the batting for March. Sawyer, on one, gave a sharp chance to the slip field but survived. Johnson and then H. Fovargue were both out by the sixth over. Next in was renowned March player, Maurice Crouch. Sawyer now punished the Ramsey bowling, scoring at an exhilarating rate, with his fifty completed with three consecutive fours. When he was on ninety-nine all around wondered if he would get his coveted century. They need not have worried as the next ball was sent hurtling to the boundary.

64

D I S C O V E R I N G

March

Meanwhile, Crouch was steadily accumulating forty-seven runs. Their unbroken partnership of 150 was, at the time, almost a record for March. Sawyer had hit sixteen fours and Crouch four compiled in just two hours. March skipper J. Shepperson declared at tea with March 177 for 2. This gave Ramsey a sporting chance of getting the runs needed to win. Although they lost two early wickets, the Ramsey hundred came up in just fifty minutes without further loss. However, from then on wickets fell regularly and when last man H. Butler came in, they still needed thirty-three more to catch March. He made fifteen leaving Ramsey on 159 all out. The Cambs Times reporter wrote that ‘the match had been brim full of interest throughout – a typical March v Ramsey match.’ Sawyer scored more than one thousand runs during the 1935 season and his 104 not out would prove to be the highest score by a March batsman that season.

MUSEUM OPENING TIMES 10.30am-3.30pm, Wednesday and Saturday. Entry is FREE.
