The expression ‘Time and tide wait for no man’ came to me the other day…

I had left the Fens to visit a business show at Birmingham’s NEC, something that I normally do on a regular basis, but suddenly realised I hadn’t done so since pre-COVID. Looking at my work diary I discovered that my last visit was in fact in January last year and I suddenly started thinking about how much had changed in our daily lives since then and also how quickly those months had passed by.

October sees Hallowe’en, after which unfortunately comes my birthday in November and on to Christmas and another New Year, but it only seems like yesterday since the same period last year.

Let’s all pray that we are now over the worst of the pandemic and the resulting restrictions as I for one plan to try and make every day of freedom count over the coming weeks and get out and about as much as possible… and I suggest you do too!

NEW USUI REIKI BUSINESS OPENS

A

March woman has set up her own Reiki business. Cheryl Smith is a master technician in Usui Reiki, a Japanese energy healing technique which is used as a complementary or alternative health treatment.

She decided to start the business from her home after receiving positive feedback when carrying out the treatment on family and friends.

Cheryl had to give up her job as an alcohol and drug counsellor after becoming seriously ill with Sepsis.

She said: “I was taken ill approximately two and a half years ago and was told I had been close to death. After my discharge from hospital I decided to change my career and concentrate on more relaxation techniques and alternative therapies.

Being in hospital had changed my perspective on life and had highlighted what was and wasn’t important.

“I have always wanted to help others and had done so by working as a counsellor for more than twenty years. However, having become a Usui Reiki Master in 2018, I feel now is the right time to offer this relaxing and healing technique to others. I work from my home and have made my Reiki room calm and pleasant to spend time in.

I feel that in this climate any help to relax and heal would be a welcome relief to most people. I hope to be able to show others the benefits that Reiki can provide.”

October Gardening Tips

ith autumn, comes the endless sea of leaves that provide a fantastic, free improver for the soil, in the form of leaf mould.

Although not providing as many nutrients to the soil as garden compost, leaf mould can add to soil structure and increase the ability of the soil to retain water. This way, it provides a good habitat for soil life such as beneficial bacteria and earthworms.

Leaf mould is also excellent when used in containers because of its ability to retain water.

An easy way to make leaf mould: • punch a few holes in the side of a black plastic bag, • rake leaves or use a leaf vacuum, which chops the leaves, • when full sprinkle with water, shake and tie, • the following autumn they can be used as a mulch or in two years can be used as a soil conditioner.

It is a busy month on the vegetable plot, clearing it of plant debris, composting and preparing for the cold months ahead.

Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them.

October is perfect for dividing large, oversized crowns of rhubarb: if established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and as it is not a fussy plant can be planted almost anywhere: so long as the ground

does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets.

Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic.

Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you have not already done so, earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins, and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

• Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.

NATURE SITES CAN HELP PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH By Steve Barclay MP

T

here are pockets of the constituency which are often great to visit but which many people have not yet discovered, and one such is Gault Wood in March.

Located near March Golf Club, a team of volunteers transformed what was a wheat field in 1994 to now a sixteen-acre wood with ten thousand trees. It was great to visit again and tour the site with members of the Woodland Trust and local volunteers to hear about how nature sites can help with people's mental health and wellbeing, and the value of planting more trees as part of the planning process.

I am keen to see sites like this expanded and am working to promote more nature sites with public access, given the wider health benefits this offers.

Six years ago, Wisbech Tennis Club had only four grass courts, which were often unplayable due to the weather, with no floodlights and a chemical toilet. So, the official opening of the two new hard courts at Wisbech Tennis Club marked a remarkable transformation for a club that now boasts two clay courts, floodlights, a children’s court and clubhouse. It’s a huge tribute to the hard work and dedication of Sue Beel, Jane Page, Wendy Cropp, Sue Pitcher and all the members that have put in a massive amount of work to bring this to fruition.

I’m delighted that flood defence projects in our constituency will benefit from almost £6.5million of investment over the next year, which builds on the ongoing work from my flooding summit meeting earlier this year which sought to prioritise schemes in our area. The Government is investing £5.2 billion in flood and coastal defences over the next six years to better protect 336,000 properties.

About one thousand schemes in England are targeted during the first year – including eight in North East Cambridgeshire. They are: Needham & Laddus Culvert Replacement £230,000; Ouse Washes Reservoir Section 10 Works £5,138,272; Hostmoor Avenue Watercourse Flood Alleviation Scheme in March £28,839; Tydd St Giles Pipe Lining £25,000; Mouth Lane Pumping Station Refurbishment £85,000; works arising from the Littleport and Downham Integrated Drainage Board Strategy £20,000; Middle Level Commissioners Bank Raising Scheme £900,000; and River Delph Improvements £60,000.

Residents who have suffered from flooding know how traumatising it can be and this investment is very welcome to ensure we maintain a focus on this issue. DEFRA is also due to set out further action to improve the access and availability of flood insurance for those at risk. I will continue to work with local stakeholders including our drainage boards, Cambridgeshire County Council, Fenland and East Cambs District Councils and Anglian Water to highlight the need for further action locally to support those homes most affected.

While the public consultation on the Wisbech incinerator proposal is over, my campaigning hasn’t stopped. I have met with local business leaders and was joined by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Andrew Lynn, putting up posters across the town alongside the leaflets that went out. I commissioned an expert report in response to the developer’s consultation.

The report identifies multiple flaws with the consultation, inaccurate and misleading information presented by the developer, and adverse effects from the scheme which are not accurately reflected in the developer’s consultation documentation. It is damning.

I will continue to do all I can to lead opposition to this flawed proposal.

Shanice said: “The counselling I had from EACH was for a year after my brother passed away. After years of keeping it all in, I had a breakdown last year when I found out that I had PTSD, depression and anxiety, all from seeing Leo’s death.

“Luckily, I had a therapist from Insight Healthcare, called Ann, who has been working with me since November 2019. I still have regular appointments with her and because of her help I am absolutely smashing my goals with giving back to EACH as I will never be able to thank them enough for all they did for me and my family.”

Shanice is also planning a live charity bingo event at a date to be confirmed and tickets for both events will be available via her Facebook Group page www.facebook.com/groups/eachfundraiser

The 25-year-old is holding a fancy-dress party in November to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) which helped her and her family when her brother Leo passed away.

Leo was born in 2010 at King’s Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital at just twenty-three weeks which meant his organs were not fully developed.

Shanice, who works as a support worker for MENCAP, said EACH was extremely supportive to her and her parents, Lee and Caroline Green who live at Friday Bridge.

She said: “Leo had a fantastic nurse called Rosa who told my parents about EACH and what they could do to help us. They were taken to a hospice at Quidenham in Norfolk, and they were so caring and helpful, even helping to organise Leo’s funeral.”

The impact EACH made on the Green family led them to organise a series of fund-raising activities on its behalf.

Shanice said: “From November 2011 to 2012 fund-raising events were organised by my family.

I started doing my own fund-raising events from November last year. From doing a fund-raiser from June this year I have raised a huge £1300! But as a total we have raised around £5000 since 2011.”

Her next event will be a fancy-dress party at Outwell Village Hall on Saturday, November 20th.

Recycling crew members

PUPILS THANK FENLAND’S REFUSE AND CLEANSING TEAMS School pupils have paid a heartfelt thank you to Fenland’s refuse, recycling and street cleansing teams for their incredible efforts throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

They sent 53 letters to the frontline teams, thanking the ‘unsung heroes’ for helping keep their homes and streets clean and safe throughout a challenging eighteen months. The letters have now been put on display on a wall at the teams’ headquarters, bringing a smile to crews every day.

Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Bin collections are one of our most vital services, provided to over 45,000 households across Fenland. Ensuring that all bin collections are maintained throughout the pandemic has been no easy task, but thanks to Herculean efforts and dedication of our refuse and recycling crews it has been possible.”

Cambridgeshire residents were invited to help select the new autumn season of arts events and three hundred people sent in their feedback from across the county.

MARCH RAILWAY MEMORIES An iconic steam locomotive is featured on a jigsaw puzzle showing it leaving March railway station.

The LNER’s B17 class of express passenger steam locomotives were built specifically to operate in East Anglia and were such notable local locomotives that a group of railway enthusiasts, 'The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust', are busy building a replica.

Among the many fund-raising activities they have adopted are annual calendars and jigsaw puzzles. New issues of both these products are now available locally for £10 and £15 respectively with the puzzle featuring the March scene.

Now approaching its eighth season, The Library Presents is a programme of arts activities, in libraries across the county and online. Funded by Arts Council England and managed by Cambridgeshire County Council, The Library Presents brings accessible arts events to as many local residents as possible.

Event-goers can expect a wealth of artistic talent heading their way over the coming season, ranging from family friendly theatre to interactive workshops (available both in person and online), as well as adult-focused music, podcasts and multicultural dance performances that will take you out of this world. The history of the B17 is that soon after the LNER was formed in 1923, it was realised that more powerful locomotives were needed to haul the increasingly heavier express passenger trains in the eastern counties. This required a new design and the result was a good-looking locomotive that was able to fulfil the requirements. They were immediately put to work from Liverpool Street to the principal stations of East Anglia and also on the daily Harwich to Liverpool (Lancs) boat train.

Consequently, right from the beginning of their careers they could be seen working at March. The first one was given the name 'Sandringham' with the consent of the King, after his Norfolk country estate.

When the King died at Sandringham, one of these engines, March-based 'Helmingham Hall', was used to haul the funeral train from King's Lynn to London. Later examples were named after many of England's famous football clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. They continued at work from March until 1960 when diesel modernisation sent the last ones to the scrap yard.

Trees, Trees & More Trees

C

ambridgeshire is the least wooded county in Britain and ever since the inception of March Wildlife Group in 1988 we have been trying to plant more trees.

Over the years, we have planted native trees in numerous areas around the town. Initially we planted areas alongside roads like those at both sides of the level crossing in Upwell Road, at Chain Bridge on both sides of the railway line north of the road and beside the by-pass east of Burrowmoor Road.

Larger areas were then planted such as The Woodman’s Way between Barkers Lane and Wimblington, Rings End Nature Reserve and an allotment at Grandford Corner on Wisbech Road.

In addition to all this work we also took over management of Norwood Road Nature Reserve.

In 1994, a sixteen-acre arable field came up for sale in Grange Road and the Woodland Trust agreed to its purchase. That summer it produced a crop of wheat then on a bitterly cold day, December 11th, 1994, about two hundred volunteers turned out for the first day of planting. Planting continued throughout the winter and into the spring of 1995.

1995 was a very dry summer and by July wheat, from the last arable crop, and poppies almost hid the trees and the only thing visible were the tree guards. Amazingly we only had about five percent losses.

Since then more trees have been planted, ponds have been dug and the wheat field has become a wood and a nature reserve.

The wood is not without its problems. Ash die back disease is beginning to kill the original trees but there are hundreds of ash seedlings and the developing situation is being observed with interest.

Only trees that are considered dangerous are being felled.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, all public open spaces were essential for outdoor exercise and connection with the natural world. More visitors has caused some damage to trees, plants and fallen timber but nature is resilient so, with luck, things should recover.

Fallen timber supports the lives of many creatures living inside the rotting wood. In autumn, there is an array of fungi that live on dead and dying wood and other materials. So, everyone should remember that a piece of rotting timber is somebody’s home so please leave things where they have fallen.

n this year’s spring Budget, the Chancellor announced the new super-deduction allowance. Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s March office, explains this new allowance and its relationship to Annual Investment Allowance.

What is super-deduction allowance?

Super-deduction works alongside the Annual Investment Allowance and gives 130 percent deduction against the purchase of new plant and machinery. However, it is only applicable to companies and for the purchase of new equipment. There is no upper expenditure limit on super-deduction.

Example: PURCHASING A NEW TRACTOR FOR £100,000

Also announced was a 50% first-year allowance for assets that would ordinarily qualify for the Special Rate Pool. However, if you have any remaining Annual Investment Allowance to use you should utilise that first to get 100% deduction rather than 50% deduction.

What is Annual Investment Allowance?

Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% deduction against business profits for the purchase of qualifying plant and machinery.

The current expenditure limit is one million pounds until December 31st, 2021, when it will drop to £200,000. Any expenditure in excess of this limit goes into a Main Pool or Special Rate Pool for tax purposes and attracts Capital Allowances at either 18% or 6% per annum.

Do vehicles qualify for super-deduction?

Commercial vehicles such as lorries and vans do but cars do not. However, electric cars still qualify for the 100 percent First Year Allowances.

We cannot hide from the fact that our social care system needs reform. Such reform has been promised by various governments over the last ten years and, after many years of waiting, steps are being taken to change the rules.

The headlines are catchy and promise so much, but the reality is not so clear cut. The details will be finalised over the coming months, but here is what we know so far:

In the current system everything is charged as one fee, but in the future, care homes will have to split how much money is actually spent caring for you, how much is spent on housing you and how much on feeding you. There is no cap on housing or food costs.

dult social care covers a wide range of activities to help those living with disability or physical or mental illness do so independently and safely. It can include ‘personal care’ such as washing and dressing, as well as wider support ensuring someone can remain an active part of their community.

It can be provided in someone’s home, or in a care or nursing home. It can also include aids and adaptations so that someone can remain living at home or support for their family carers.

Short-term care can be provided to enable someone to recover from illness or injury. Longterm care is provided where there is an ongoing need, such as when someone is getting older. The local authority is responsible for carrying out an assessment of the needs but usually the private sector will provide the carers or residential care.

Currently, anyone with assets of more than £23,250 has to pay for their own care whether at home or in residential care. If the person is living at home, their property is not included when working out the value of their assets. However, if the property becomes vacant when they move into residential care, then it will be included.

Where the local authority was paying for care, the average cost per week in 2019/2020 was £679. For those paying for their own care it is estimated that the cost was, on average, forty-one percent higher at £958 per week.

The National Audit Office in 2016/17 estimated that around £10.9 billion was spent on privately purchased social care and that a further £3.1 billion was paid to top up the cost of care when it was part funded by the local authority.

New proposals The Government has recently announced new plans for funding care. An additional 1.25% will be added to National Insurance contributions for all those under retirement age from April 2022. From April 2023 the tax will be shown as the Health and Social Care Levy and all workers, even those over retirement age, will have to pay.

They have also stated a lifetime cap will be placed on care costs of £86,000 per person. However, this cap is only on care costs not on accommodation costs. Anyone moving into residential care will have to cover the cost of their room, their meals etc. It should be noted that the local authority will only pay for the care that they feel is necessary. If you feel that extra care or a different home would be better any increase in cost will have to be paid by the individual.

Someone with assets of more than £100,000 will have to cover all of their own care costs. Whilst this seems a generous increase from the current threshold of £23,250 it should be considered that three-quarters of those aged 65 and over in England own their own homes. Therefore, the majority of those entering care homes will probably have to cover their own costs for a while.

Those with assets between £20,000 and £100,000 will contribute towards the cost of their care. Only those with assets under £20,000 will pay nothing towards the cost of their care.

I grew up in an idyllic cul-de-sac in Needingworth, surrounded by loving friends and family. The street would always be filled with kids on roller skates, scooters and go karts. There was always someone to play with. What more could you wish for as a kid growing up?

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

As a child, I devoured the Harry Potter novels and eagerly awaited their release. I was a school year younger than Harry and convinced that I was made

for the wizarding world! I don’t think it was possible to grow up in the late ’90s and not be influenced by the tales of Harry, Hermione and Ron. I loved how studious Hermione was and this, no doubt, had an influence on my love of school and academia.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

I would love to spend the day speech writing with Winston Churchill. His use of language and his style was so magical, and I would learn so much. We would also drink whisky and paint together. Queen Elizabeth could

tag along in the afternoon for tea – I think we would all have a great rapport!

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Spontaneous, kindly, clumsy, delightful, and argumentative.

If there was one thing which you could change about March, what would it be and why?

It would be great to have a train line between March and Wisbech so that I could use public transport to get to work.

I am a huge fan of sitting back and getting lost in a book whilst travelling on the train, and I used to love this time when commuting to work on the train to Cambridge.

What advice would you give to a sixteen-year-old you?

Sadly, you don’t make it as a lifeguard – the chlorine makes you sneeze. That said, you change tack and decide that university is for you! Stick at it and you’ll slowly figure everything out.

Good news – when you’re 28 you’ll buy a puppy, and he will be the best thing ever!

D

uring mid-September 1935, southern England was subjected to a series of violent storms.

On Monday, September 16th a great gale swept the country including The Fens. It was described as a hurricane and wind speeds as high as 96mph were recorded leaving a trail of damage, slates stripped from roofs and many telephone lines down.

Well known March man James Hill (71) lived at 12, Market Place and had worked for ironmonger, H G Singlehurst, for forty-three years years. He was regarded as a strong man and good with horses but he had not been out with Mr Singlehurst’s horse and trolley for several years. However, it would appear that, despite the storms, he relished the opportunity to go to Stonea on Thursday the nineteenth.

Just before 1pm, Mrs Emily Atkin, of West View, Stonea, watched from her house as Hill drove from Fincham’s Farm towards Stonea railway station.

Suddenly, the horse reared up and despite using his whip, Hill could not control it. The horse pushed the cart, with Hill on his seat, backwards down the bank and into the Sixteen Foot River. Ernest Cousins, a baker’s rounds man, was driving his van towards Wimblington and, despite not being a good swimmer, stopped and plunged into the water in a rescue attempt but had to abort his effort. Hill was still on his seat and, by using a pole, Cousins and two railwaymen managed to get him to the bank.

M Fox, a GPO telephone linesman, saw the drama unfold from on top of a pole where he was repairing storm damage. Dr Norris, of Manea, received a call at 12. 55pm and managed to

get to the scene quickly; probably it was Fox who called him and also the police. Dr Norris arrived at the river side to find Cousins, Fox and others attempting artificial respiration. Hill’s head had never been under water and Norris assessed that he had died of acute heart failure due to sudden immersion in cold water.

When Fox realised his efforts to revive Hill were in vain, he turned his attention to the horse. A terrific gale was blowing and the horse was at risk of immediate drowning. Fox did all he could to entice the horse to the bank but, still harnessed to the cart, it could not free itself. Three times Fox went to the horse to attach ropes to its head and returned to the bank where willing assistance helped keep it above water until the harness was cut from a boat that was brought alongside. In view of the horse’s frantic kicking in the deep rough water, Fox’s actions were brave indeed. Shortly afterwards, he was seen to have resumed working up the telephone pole, mending wires in the rough gale.

The following day an inquest was held at the Golden Lion, Stonea, where a verdict of accidental death was recorded. The coroner concluded by saying that ‘There seems to be quite a number of heroes around here.’

WINDOWS 11 PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

Microsoft has finally announced that Windows 11 will launch on October 5th this year and that all eligible PCs currently running on Windows 10 will be able to upgrade to this new version free of charge. The roll out will be staggered, meaning that the upgrade will only be available to select devices initially, with all eligible devices being able to upgrade by mid-2022.

So, what are the new features that Microsoft has been teasing us about over the past few months? Well, many of them are designed to help improve our new work-from-home focused work lives.

The start menu has moved to the bottom-centre of the screen by default but can be moved back to the bottom-left with a settings tweak. What the menu does has also changed. For decades, it’s

essentially been a list of programs, utilities and folders. In Windows 11 it will be a lot smarter, showing recently and frequently used programs and files, regardless of which device you last used, hopefully meaning you can find what you’re looking for more quickly. For example, if your job will see you working from both home and the office, this could be a big timesaver as you won’t have to scramble around looking for a document you were just working on.

It’s not all about work though, as Windows 11 also boasts the best Windows gaming experience yet, including much faster load times and other tweaks. There will be improved integration between Windows 11 and Xbox Game Pass as Microsoft continues to push its excellent game subscription service.

Last, but certainly not least, is the addition of Android apps (coming mid 2022) on Windows 11 and due to a complete

overhaul of the Microsoft app store, the number of programs available should increase dramatically.

Do you have to upgrade to Windows 11? Absolutely not if your current computer is running Windows 10. Windows 11 is currently an optional update as Windows 10 will continue to receive security updates until October 2025.

It is important to note that, due to the nature of its new features, computers will need to be slightly more powerful to run Windows 11. The safest assumption to make is that if your computer was made in late 2017 or after, it will probably be compatible with Windows 11. But this is not a hard and fast rule as there are some technical variants meaning it is impossible to give a definite yes or no answer. Pumpkin Soup AUTUMNAL

Did you know, the word ‘pumpkin’ comes from the Greek word ‘pepon’ which means ‘large melon’? Highly nutritious and rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they are incredibly healthy and make a wonderful, hearty soup!

Method

Serves 6

Ingredients

1 Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas 7

750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 onions, cut into wedges 2 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes chicken stock, crumbled 250ml double cream 1 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp ground black pepper Salt to taste Sourced from www.allrecipes.co.uk

2 Place the pumpkin, carrots and onions in a baking dish or roasting tin. Drizzle with the vegetable oil.

3 Bake in the preheated oven for forty minutes, until soft but not blackened.

In a large saucepan over a medium heat, bring the water and crumbled stock cubes to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water until soft, for about twenty minutes.

Combine the potato and water with the roasted vegetables and puree in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth. Return to the pan over low heat and stir in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently, then serve with an extra dollop of cream and some crusty bread.

he South Ormsby Estate is located in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Classed as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, this region can justifiably boast history and tradition. The estate spans some three thousand acres, with Jon and Jan Thornes being the current custodians.

Head Distiller at the South Ormsby Estate is Tristan Jorgensen who gained distillery experiences in Scotland. He is now utilising that knowledge and those experiences to great advantage, having created a multi-award-winning brand for South Ormsby Estate’s own craft gins, with several of the botanicals used coming from the estate.

History dictates that Charles Burrell Massingberd (1749 – 1835) became the squire of South Ormsby Estate during 1802. I found Burrell’s Dry Gin (43% vol) superb. This elegant, refined production is classic and fresh. It has botanicals that include juniper, angelica root, coriander seeds, lemon peel, apple, and almonds, plus some more, that make this gin the very worthy and excellent quality production that it is. Fragrant, smooth and crisp is how I would describe this gin. The mouthfeel and palate’s sensation enjoy the fruitiness. I found that with an added tonic, this production came into its own, having delights of citrusy overtones and really great for a ‘G and T mix’, garnishing with citrus fruits.

Red fruit aromas and flavours are evident, in this splendid, pink gin (43% vol) production, fabulous for adding colour to any occasion. Again, I found this to be another extremely well-balanced production.

Certainly, the bouquet is fruity and, with the palate following through, having further highlights of complexity and depth, this much appreciated and respected delectation is a ‘pink gin’ lover’s delight.

Written by Shamser Sinha, this moving play shines a light on the struggles of contemporary life as one family juggles bills, dreams and taxi-driving schemes.

It’s said it was inspired by conversations with taxidrivers and residents of Peterborough and Ipswich held in 2018 as part of an Arts Council funded research project.

Hallam Travel: Taking you places since the 1990s

e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World.

On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. SPECIAL First Anniversary CELEBRATION A March business which specialises in board games is celebrating its first anniversary with a special Harry Potter Day! Rollplay, situated in the town’s High Street, is encouraging Harry Potter fans to come to a special games day on Saturday, October 23rd with goodie bags being given to those who dress up as their favourite characters.

The business was opened last October by Vicky Ransome and offers a wide variety of games for sale and also has the facility for enthusiasts to play games in-house.

The March mother said: “Because of the COVID restrictions it has been a very challenging year, but since lockdown ended things have really picked up. We get customers of all ages and the feedback we have had has been brilliant.

“Although we do click and collect and local deliveries it is great to have people back in the store. We have introduced a Saturday games

night from 6pm to 9pm which has proved to be very popular.”

Vicky set up Rollplay as she enjoyed playing board games with her husband, Andrew, and two children, and the business has around one hundred and fifty games in stock with access to many more, with games such as Codenames being particularly popular, as well as Pokémon trading cards.

Rollplay is currently open on Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm but may open on Sundays later in the year.

What’s Really Possible for Your Experience of Having a Physical Body?

The Kissing Consciousness approach to what we call 'Body Wisdom' starts with listening to the body. This was taught to me in 2002

by David Heard, founder of the National Rehabilitation Centre for the Paralysed, and trainer of elite athletes such as England cricket captain Andy Strauss.

this you're paying attention to your body the way a mechanic would listen to the feedback of a car.

You're reading the runes of your own body, you're getting a feel for it, you're listening to the information being provided and noticing the signals coming from it. Feedback from the body which is ignored can become a niggle, which if ignored can become a symptom, which if ignored further still can become a disease. Too much of commercial healthcare addresses the symptom instead of the cause. Here are my top three tips to liberate your bodily experience.

1) 'No pain, no gain' is a no-no. As Heard explains, pain is the body's signal that something is wrong, so ‘No pain, no gain’ was always going to be a dodgy premise.

2) Rate of Perceived Exertion.

Instead of comparing ourselves to other people, what we ought to be doing is exercising within our own personal sweet spot - not so easy that it doesn't engage us, and not so hard that it puts us off or discourages us. Our rate of perceived exertion is entirely personal to us. You can assess this on a scale of one to ten, with one

being very light, no strain at all, and ten being far too heavy such that you can't lift it - or equivalents for other activity types.

3) Needs of the Mind and Body. As Don Miguel Ruiz explains, the needs of the mind are not the same as the needs of the body. If the need for food or drink or sex is in the mind it can never be satisfied with food or drink or sex. So, we have to make a distinction and separate things into two piles: these are the needs of the body, and these are the needs of the mind.

By listening to the body, rejecting the irresponsibility of 'No pain, no gain', working within our own chosen rates of exertion, and liberating our bodily experience from the insatiable needs of the tyrant mind, we can ensure that our physical activity is always enjoyable, nurturing and something we desire. This heals the false relationship to our bodies we are conditioned into whereby exercise is something that we attempt to graft onto our lives, which we all know is an approach that never works or lasts.

Debt Help Charity Warns Homelessness Could Rise in Fenland Because of Rent Arrears

T

he Fenland Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre based at Centenary and Wisbech Baptist Church has been delivering free debt help to people across the area for more than thirteen years and throughout the pandemic.

They are urging people with rent arrears to seek free debt help as soon as possible.

With measures such as the evictions ban now at an end and the notice period from landlords to tenants reduced from six months to four months, along with the furlough scheme due to have come to an end on September 30th, it is expected that more people will need to know where to turn for free help with problem finances.

I wasn’t eligible to claim benefits, which meant I struggled to pay my rent and ended up in trouble. I was evicted from my home and found myself in a lot of debt with rent and Council Tax. It felt like I was completely lost, alone and in the dark.

“Sadly, we’ve seen all too often that people are struggling to find enough money to cover essentials like rent, heating and

READY FOR HALLOWE’EN ON

OCTOBER 31ST? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN?

H

allowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st.

The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture.

Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en.

It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

ete Burlton has kept ponds for all his life and his hobby turned into a passion. So much so that he decided to develop what had, for several years, been a part-time business into his full-time employment over three years ago. sees Pete’s Ponds accepting unwanted fish of all breeds and sizes.

Based in Pointon, north of Bourne, but covering a wide area of South Lincolnshire and adjoining counties, Pete’s Ponds carry out all types of pond maintenance, including new and total rebuilds, and this time of the year there will be plenty of springtime cleaning and maintenance needing to be carried out.

To complete the “full package” for fish enthusiasts, Pete also provides fish health checks, and has a range of new and second-hand equipment for sale.
